Vaihteeksi jotain muuta - Something Else for a Change

Kuten lupasin, ei enää huiveja. Vaan...*rumpujen pärinää*...sukka!

As I promised, no more scarves. Instead...*drumrolls*...a sock!

Tällä mallilla olen tehnyt jo parit sukat, ohuesta, vähän paksummasta ja nyt vielä paksummasta. Ja kyllä on tullut huomattua että ehkä kannattaisi hieman selvemmin kirjoittaa muistiinpanot että niistä saisi jälkikäteen jotain selvääkin.

Lanka on Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled, jota sain Sockapalooza-vaihdossa pari vyyhtiä. Näyttää että vyyhdillisestä saa kevyesti parin sukkia, toisesta voikin sitten tehdä vaikka sormikkaat. Ihanan karkkiväristä lankaa, tässä menossa Harmonyn 3.25 mm paksuisilla puikoilla.

I've made similar socks twice before, from thin yarn, a bit thicker and now thicker still. And yes, I noticed that I should pay attention to the clarity of my notes. It is very difficult sometimes to follow them, bah.

The yarn I'm using is Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled. I got two skeins of this from my Sockapalooza-pal and it seems that one skein makes a pair of socks. So maybe the other skein will become a pair of gloves or something. Lovely candy colours, here using 3.25 mm Harmony needles.

Hieman arveluttaa vielä tuo koko. Sukassa vain 45 silmukkaa, mutta kun tuo pitsiraitakohta joustaa niin mukavasti. Ja olisikohan kantapäästä pitänyt tehdä hieman pidempi?

I'm a bit unsure about the size. I only have 45 stitches in this sock, though the lacy stripe stretches nicely. And maybe I should have made the heel flap a bit longer?

Olen vihdoinkin uskaltanut korkata nämä kirjatkin. Kauan kyllä niiden kanssa vetkuttelin, mutta lopulta raaskin aloittaa. Ensimmäinen projekti kirjattu, taskussa vyöte ja pätkä lankaa. Todella kätevää itseasiassa.

I've finally started these books too. I certainly took my own sweet time with that, but now I logged in my first project. In the pouch I put the ball band and some of the yarn. Very handy, actually.

Vieläkin huivi - And a Scarf, again

Nyt loppuu huivit vähäksi aikaa, lupaan. Mutta tässä on Esmeralda, vihdoinkin valmiina. Huivi jäi lojumaan viimeistä riviä vaille valmiina pitkäksi aikaa, kun olin hukannut kerän Silk Gardenia. Sitä ei sitten ikinä löytynyt (päätynyt varmaan samaan paikkaan minne mustien sukkien parit) ja kun ko. väri oli sopivasti jo ammoin lopetettu, oli pakko ostaa jotain sinnepäin sopivaa. Päädyin kerään musta-harmaa-ruskea-vihreää. Neulon sillä sitten lopetusrivin ja teurastin loppukerää hapsuiksi.

This is the end of scarves for a while, I promise you. But here is Esmeralda, finally finished. The scarf was left waiting for the finishing round because I ran out of yarn. I knew I had one ball of Silk Garden somewhere around, but I never found it (it must have ended up wherever the pairs of black socks go to). And since the colourway I was using was discontinued ages ago I was forced to buy another. I got a ball of black-grey-green-brown and finished the scarf with it and used some of the remaining ball for the fringe.

Värin vaihtoa ei kyllä huomaa mistään, niin hyvin se uppoaa tuon toisen värin väreihin, että jos en tietäisi sitä itse niin en kyllä pystyisi sanomaan missä vaihtokohta on. Onneksi nuo Noron värit ovat noin vaihtelevat muutenkin. Tein päihin tuollaiset letitetyt hapsut, kun en halunnut liikaa pätkiä roikkumaan siihen. Aika näyttää lisäänkö tuohon vielä niitä lisää, vai pidänkö tuollaisena harvana. Nyt noita on neliöiden keskellä ja kulmassa.

You can't even tell that I've used two different colourways on this. If I didn't know I couldn't point out where I switched. Luckily the Noro colours are quite forgiving. I did simple braided fringe on the edges because I didn't want too many yarns hanging on them. Time will tell if I add some more or keep it like it is. Now they are situated at the center and point of squares.

Pituutta tälle yksilölle tuli hieman minua enemmän, arvioisin noin 180 cm ja leveyttä on tuollaiset 33 senttiä. Olisin ehkä voinut ottaa vielä kerän verran pituutta lisää, mutta kun ei niin ei. Jos se yksi kerä jostain ilmaantuu, niin ainahan sen voi vielä tuupata mukaan, mutta kyllä tuon saa aika kivasti kaulan ympärille kiedottua ja leveys on sopiva peittämään päätä jos tulee kylmä (minä ja päähineet eivät sovi yhteen).

Hapsujen jälkeen heitin huivin koneeseen villapesuohjelmaan pyörimään ja kuivatin kiukaan kaiteella saunassa. Lanka pehmeni mukavasti eikä vaatinut mitään kauheita pingotuksia. Ehkä reunallle voisi näyttää höyryrautaa, se hieman kipristyy. Pidän erityisesti siitä että huivissa molemmat puolet ovat samanlaiset (ja se toimii mainiosti pätkävärjätyillä langoilla).

The length of this one is a bit more than my height, meaning it's about 180 cm and width is comfortable 32 cm. I would have liked it to be a tad longer, maybe one ball's worth but I'm not too bothered by it. If the missing ball should turn up I might knit it in, though. But I can wrap it quite nicely around my neck and it's wide enough to cover the head if it gets too cold (I seriously dislike hats).

After adding the fringe I chucked the scarf into the washing machine and ran it through a wool cycle. Then I hanged it out to dry in the sauna. The yarn softened nicely and it came out quite good without any blocking whatsover. I might show the ends a bit of steam iron at some point, for they do curl a bit. What I like most about this design is that the scarf is completely reversible (and it shows off the lovely colours nicely too).

Ja taas huivi - Yet Another Scarf

Täällä blogataan vain valmiita töitä, eikä mitään keskeneräisiä! Taas huivi, Lacy Kerchief Scarf kesän 2005 interweavesta on nyt valmis. Aika helppo ja nopea työ - aloitin tämän tuossa kuukauden puolessavälissä, mutta sitten se oli hieman tauolla ja nyt rykäisin sen valmiiksi viime viikon aikana. Kevyt höyrytys sunnuntai-iltana ja tässä tulos.

I'm only blogging finished things from now on, no ufos here (as if)! Yet another scarf, Lacy Kerchief Scarf this time, from Interweave Summer 2005. A quick and easy - I started this around the middle of this month but it was on hold for a while after a quick start. Finished it during last week, did the final weaving in and light steaming on Sunday.

Siitä tuli aika mukava, ei liian iso mutta sitä voi kietoa kaulaan monella tavalla ja pitsireunus on nätti.

It turned out quite nice. Not too big but you can still wrap it around the neck in many ways and the lace edging is pretty.

Se on siinä - It is done

Lupasin kuvia valmiista kashmirhuivista ja tässä niitä on. Kuvaussessio ei mennyt ihan putkeen, tarkoitus oli maanantaina mennä ottamaan niitä ulos, mutta sitten satoi. Tiistaina oli neuletapaaminen enkä ehtinyt, keskiviikkona tulin kipeäksi enkä viitsinyt mennä ulos hyppimään huivin ja kameran kanssa joten on tyytyminen sisäkuviin. Mutta ainakin tässä kuvassa väri on suhteellisen oikea, kaunis pehmeä munakoiso.

I promised you photos of the finished cashmere scarf so here they are. My photosession didn't go as planned, for I wanted to go outdoors to take them. But, on Monday it rained, on Tuesday I had a knit meet and on Wednesday I got sick and didn't feel like going out at all. So you'll have to do with indoor photos. But at least this one shows the true colour quite like it is, a soft brownish aubergine. Very pretty.

Tämä kuva yrittää valoittaa hieman mittasuhteita (ja näyttää pöydällä vallitsevan kaaoksen turhan hyvin). En käsitellyt huivia mitenkään kauhean rankasti, koska vaikutti siltä että pingottamalla ei saisi kauhesti lisää pituutta, lähinnä vain leveyttä ja sitä en halunnut. Pesin sen kevyesti ja linkosin koneessa ja levittelin saunaan kuivumaan. Lanka pehmeni huomattavasti - eipä silti että se olisi jotenkin kovaa ollut ennen sitä - ja neulepinta tasoittui. This photo tries to show the size of it (and the chaos that is our dining table at the moment). I didn't block this one too hard for I felt that it would not give me more length, only width which I did not want. So I just washed it lightly, put it through a spin cycle and laid it out in the sauna to dry. The yarn relaxed quite nicely with the treatment, it got softer and the stitches evened out. The length of it is about 135 cm and width 25.

Not the largest scarf in the world, but you can wrap it around the neck like this, for example. The upper part of the face removed due to bad hair and massive dark circles for this is a knit blog not a horror show.

Facts:

The pattern in question is Skeleton Scarf from the book Arctic Lace. The yarn I used is Windy Valley Muskox Cashmere, which I received from my SP11 pal and which is sadly discontinued. I spent all of the two balls I had and made 18 repeats of the edge lace on both ends to use up all of it. I knit it with 3.5 mm needles.

Kulut viikko on ollut blogaamisen kannalta hieman ankea. Alkuviikosta vaivasi maha ja loppuviikon vietin tiiviisti kurssilla, joten iltasella on tullut lähinnä hieman neulottua, mitä nyt aikaa on ollut.

Jotain on tullut valmiiksikin, Skeleton Scarf on valmis ja kuivuu saunassa. Märkänä langassa on aika voimakas ja hieman epämiellyttävä petroolimainen tuoksu mutta eiköhän se poistu kuivuessa, kun en neuloessa moista huomannut. Tein kuten suunnittelinkin, eli purin alkupitsin ja neuloin sitä molempiin päihin niin kauan kuin lankaa riitti. Mutta siitä sitten enemmän kuvien kera myöhemmin.

This week has been a bit poor when it comes to blogging (and knitting too). At the beginning of the week I was bothered with my stomach and the rest of the week I spent at a course, so in the evenings it's been just knitting, what little time I've had.

But I've finished something too, Skeleton Scarf is now done and is drying in the sauna. When wet the yarn has a really strong and a bit unpleasant petrol-like smell but it should go away when it's dry for I did not notice it while knitting. I did as I had planned, I ripped the edge lace and knit it on both ends for as long as I could. But more about that with photos later.

Sain uutta lankaakin, Zeska halusi tilata Colinettelta Skye:tä, koska se on lopetettu ja mikäpä siinä, lähdin kimppaan. Värejä ei ollut kovinkaan montaa enää jäljellä, ja Colinetten sivuilla olevista kuvista oli aika vaikea valita, joten päädyin sitten Sea Breezeen. Ei ehkä ihan sitä mihin täällä on totuttu, mutta ihan kivan väristä lankaa. Vaihtelu virkistää jne. Nyt pitäisi vain keksiä täydellinen malli tuolle.

I got some new yarn this week too. Zeska wanted to order some Skye from Colinette, for it's been discontinued and she wanted to have some. So, I decided to order some too. They didn't have too many colours left and because the photos at Colinette website are not too good I decided to go with this colour, Sea Breeze. It may not be quite what you've become accustomed to seeing here, but I like it anyway. And you know what they say about change. Now I just have to think of a perfect pattern for this yarn.

Ai, ja olenhan minä aloittanut jotain uuttakin, huivia taas. Tässä tulossa Lacy Kerchief Scarf Lana Grossan Silanasta (taas yksi mukava lanka joka on lopetettu). Vielä todella alkuvaiheessa, mutta mietin että tarvitsen jotain mukanaraahattavaa nyt kun tuo luurankohuivikin valmistui.

Oh, I started something new also, this will be a Lacy Kerchief Scarf once it's finished. Still in the early phase, but I wanted to start something small that I could carry along now that the Skeleton Scarf is done. So this will be it and the yarn is Silana from Lana Grossa (another nice yarn that has been discontinued).

I also took part in some trading, one mitten book (Haavisto's Sata kansanomaista kuviokudinmallia) equals two balls of Knit Picks Felici and a set of Harmony needles. And both are happy.

Pitsittääkö? - Do You Want a Bit of Lace with That?

Pikkumekkosen jälkeen en ole jaksanut aloittaa mitään uutta ja monimutkaista. Jotain ideoita pyörii päässä ja mallitilkkuja on tullut tehtyä, mutta siihen se on jäänytkin. Kulunut viikko oli jotenkin kovin tahmainen eikä iltasella ollut kauheasti aikaa neuloa. Olen pitänyt matkaneuleena yksinkertaista pitsihuivia jota teen alaskalaisesta kashmirista ja alaskalaisella ohjeella (Arctic Lace-kirjasta) ja se rupeaa vähitellen valmistumaan.
Lanka on kauhean vaikeaa kuvattavaa, väri ei millään meinaa toistua kunnollisena. Se on sellaista munakoison väristä rusehtavanviolettia. Tässä ehkä paras esitys, väri on aika lähellä oikeaa.

After the small dress/tunic I haven't started anything big. I've had some ideas and made some swatches but that's it. The week has been very difficult for some reason and I haven't had much time for knitting in the evenings. I've had this simple lace scarf as a carry-on project for a while now and it's beginning to show signs of becoming finished. It's made from Alaskan cashmere with an Alaskan pattern (Arctic Lace), very fitting I think. The yarn is very difficult to photograph for the colour is close to eggplant, a brownish-purple that somehow comes out quite wrong in the photos usually, the above one is the closest to true colour I've been able to get.

Ohjeen mukaan puuttuu enää reunan reikäpitsi ja sitten olisi valmista. Ohjeen alkuperäinen lanka qiviutia, ja siinä on 290 metriä/kerä ja huiviin käytetään yksi kerä. Minun käyttämässäni langassa on hieman erilainen metrimäärä, kahdessa kerässä on 398 metriä, eli kolmasosa lisää. Luulen että lanka ei kuitenkaan riitä enää yhteen kokonaiseen pitsikuvioon ja reunaan. Mitä siis tehdä? En aloittaessani jotenkin huomioinut erilaista metrimäärää ollenkaan vaan rupesin vain neulomaan. Jos olisin, olisin ehkä aloittanut virkkausaloituksella ja neulonut päät viimeiseksi. Tai sitten aloittanut eri kohdasta kuviota. Sisälläni asuva pieni perfektionisti ei kuitenkaan salli, että alku- ja loppupäät olisivat erilaiset. Taidan tehdä siten, että pujotan puikon tuohon alkuun siihen kohtaan mistä tuo luurankokuvio alkaa ja puran sitten alkupään pitsin jotenkin, puolitan jäljellejääneen langan ja neulon reunapitsiä niin kauan kuin lankaa riittää. Vaatii hieman askartelua mutta ei pitäisi olla mitenkään mahdotonta. Mitäpä tästä opimme? Kannattaa miettiä lankojen metrimääriä ennenkuin neuloo.

According to the pattern I've come to the part where I just have to make the edging lace and it's all done. The yarn used in the original scarf is qivuit, 290 m/ball and uses one ball. The yarn I use has a different yardage though, 398 m in two balls, so about a third more. However, I think that I do not have enough yarn to make one more complete repeat plus the edging. What to do? I want to use up all the yarn for I have so little left that I can't really make anything else and I do not want fingerless mittens even if I had enough for them. I somehow completely ignored the different meter amounts of the yarns when I started. If I had I might have used provisional cast-on and done the lace edges afterwards. Or started the pattern from a different point. The small perfectionist living inside me does not allow the skeleton lace part to be anything but symmetrical so I have to think of something else to do. I will probably put a needle through the stitches after the lace edging and then rip it, halve the remaining yarn and just knit the lace edging for as long as I have yarn. Requires a bit of fiddling but should't be impossible. So what is today's lesson? Look at the yarns and yardages before beginning a project, or you might have problems.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Teinpä tällaisen pikkutyön. Minulla oli kaksi kerää vaaleanvihreää Sirdarin Snuggly Baby Bamboo-lankaa ja siitä se idea sitten lähti. Tuo kuvassa noin kainaloiden kohdalla näkyvä poikittaisraita johtuu siitä, että tein mekon hieman epätavallisesti, loin virkkausaloituksella silmukat ja tein yläosan ensin. Ja miksikö tein näin? No, ajattelin että saisin kahdesta kerästä vaikka liivin ja että jos tekisin yläosan ensin voisin jatkaa helmaa niin pitkälle kuin lankaa riittäisi. Mutta huomasin pian että tarvitsen lisää lankaa, koska yläosa vei jo puolitoista kerää. Samaa värjäyserää ei tienkään enää saisi, joten tein siis raidan, ja mielestäni se piristää mekkosta huomattavasti.

I made this small something. I had two balls of Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo in light green and I went from that. The stripe you can see near the arm openings is because I did this in a bit of an odd way for I did a provisional cast-on and knit the top part first. Why did I do that? Well, because I had this idea that I might be able to do something with just the two balls I had, so I'd first make the top and then continue downwards for as long as I could with the yarn I had. But I quickly came to the conclusion that I would need more yarn for the top part took 1.5 balls of yarn already. So that's why I made the stripe and I think it's a nice detail.

Sitten vaan kullanväriset napit olkapäille (miksi kaikki kivat lastennapit ovat niin pieniä?) ja silityskukkanen rintaan ja kas, valmis mekko. Se on jo uudella omistajallaan ja ihan sopivan kokoinenkin, katsotaan jos saan myöhemmin kuvia mekosta "in action". Eilen oli aika toivotonta saada mitään aikaiseksi kun kuvassa pyöri innostunut isokokoinen koira.

Mutta, hieman tietoa: ohje on omasta päästä, lähtökohtana minulla oli kaksi mittaa: hiha-aukon korkeus (tosin tein niistä korkeammat) ja leveys. Leventelin sopivasti että tuloksena oli A-linjainen liivitunikahamonen. Koko noin 1.5 vuotias ja lankaa meni hieman päälle kolme kerää.

Then I added golden buttons on the shoulders (why all the nice kid's buttons are so small?) and ironed on a small flower motif and there it was. Finished. It's now on its new owner already and it fits nicely. I'm hoping to get some photos of it "in action" later for last night it was hopeless getting any photos for there was an over-eager large dog around.

But, a bit of info: the pattern is purely "knit as you go", I had two measurements, the height of the arm opening (though I made them bigger) and the width. I made some increases so that it turned out nice. The size is about 1.5 yo and I spent a bit over three balls of yarn.

Sain eilen syntymäpäivälahjan ja siellä oli tämä hauska pankki. En tosin tarvitse neulontatunteja, että otsikkona olisi ehkä voinut ennemminkin olla "I'm savin' up for yarn!" mutta muuten hauska esine. Vai mitä pidätte päälliosasta? Eikun vaan säästämään euroja luksuslankoja varten.

I got a birthday present yesterday and amongst the other things there was this tin bank. Though I don't think I need knitting lessions so the title could have been for example "I'm savin' up for yarn!". Other than that it's a delightful little thing. Or how do you like the top design? Now I'll just begin saving up my euros for luxury yarns.

Kyllä, olen vanhempi - Yes, I'm older

Vietin syntymäpäivää tiistaina ja sain paketin salaiselta ystävältäni juuri sopivasti maanantaina. Ja mitä kaikkea kivaa sieltä löytyikään? Kaksi vyyhtiä lankaa, lilaa Louet Euroflax-pellavaa ja merinoista Lisa Souzan sukkalankaa nimeltä Mars Quake. Suklaata oli myös, mutta se hieman kärsi tästä hämmentävästä lämpöilmiöstä (juuri väärään aikaan) ja viilentelee itseään jääkaapissa. Maku ei kyllä kärsinyt, hyviä vadelmatryffeleitä ovat (juu, on maistettu). Ja paketissa oli vielä sukkatuubeja (ei tipu puikot matkalla) ja kirja jossa neuvotaan tekniikka jolla saa tehtyä sukat samaan aikaan pyöröpuikolla (eli siis magic loop englanniksi) ja totta kai siinä on sukkamalleja. Ensimmäinen sukkakirjani, itse asiassa. Kyllä taas kelpasi.

I had my birthday on Tuesday and a packet from my Secret Pal arrived just in time. Inside were these lovely things and some chocolates too. But they suffered a bit from the heat (what do you know, a freak heat-wave appeared just at the wrong time) and were lounging in the fridge. They are delicious though.

So, inside the package I found some lovely yarns: a skein of Louet Euroflax in purple and Lisa Zousa merino sock yarn in Mars Quake. Also inside were found a smiley-face card, some project tubes and a book called 2-at-a-time socks (magic looping). You know, that's my first sock book. Thank you for a perfectly timed package!

Hannulta sain lahjaksi korvakorut jo aiemmin, mutta kuulemma tarvitsin vielä jotain käytännöllistä, kas tässä, nyt minullakin on oma gorillapod. Eikö olekin söötti?

I got a pair of earrings from Hannu earlier, but he wanted to get me something practical too. Here it is, now I have my own gorillapod too. Isn't it cute?

What is(are) your favorite place(s) to knit?

I showed it earlier, in this post. It is still my favourite place to knit, that corner of the sofa.

What supplies (besides yarn & needles) make the setting perfect for knitting?

Here are some of my supplies...the square measuring thingy is used for swatches and of course it's also a needle gauge. My pink Chibi holds the needles (though I have somehow lost all the good medium-sized needles). Scissors are needed too, I have two identical pairs and most of the time I can find at least one. And measuring tape. I have several of them but I seem to find only the bad one that begins from 1 and not 0 (due to having been broken once and it's about to do it again).

See? So I have to remember to start measuring somewhere else than at the beginning of the tape. Maybe I should retire this already but then does it mean that I won't have any when I need?

And of course stitch markers. I use them mostly with lace (and not very often even then), when knitting in the round and sometimes to mark the increases/decreases. I have tons of them for I got nearly all that are on the purple thingy from a Nordic secret pal swap. Then I have some silver ones with pretty semi-precious stones (the lonely one in the middle, they're my favourite) and I got some rings with pearls just recently, which I'm planning to use with lace.

Oh, and tea, naturally. Or it could be something alcoholic too like a glass of good wine but not too much, otherwise I start making mistakes.

Tapahtuneita asioita - Things that happened

Hyvin oli tiedetty posliinitöpöt, kyseessä olivat siis sähkötolpan eristeet. Arvonta sensijaan ei sujunut niinkuin olin ajatellut, koska kaavailin kissaa onnettareksi. Tein pienet paperitollot numerolapuista ja yritin saada kissaa kiinnostumaan niistä. Ei tulosta. Seuraavaksi laitoin ne paperipussiin jota rapistelin. Tulosta oli, mutta kissa luuli saavansa jotain muuta, paperitollot eivät edelleenkään herättäneet kiinnostusta. Siispä turvauduin satunnaislukugeneraattoriin joka arpoi voittajaksi kommentoijan nro 17 eli San. Jos laitat osoitetiedot mailitse niin katsotaan josko jotain sopivaa tulisi sinnepäin.

The knitters were very knowledgeable, the porcelain stubs were indeed isolators used in electric poles. The drawing of the winned did not go as planned, for I had thought to use the cat to do the drawing. So, I made small paper balls out of numbered tickets and tried to get the cat interested in them. No luck. Next I put them into a paper bag which I shook at the cat who thought she'd be getting something interesting and couldn't care less about the paper balls. So, I had to use a random number generator to drawn the lucky winner number 17, San that is.

Jotain valmista vaihteeksi, uusi Bainbridge kadonneen tilalle. Löysin lopulta kadonneen pikkukerän lankaa ja sain setin valmiiksi. Nyt se on käytetty kaikki, Zen Stringin Bambewe siis. Ihanaa lankaa neuloa ja kauniit värit, kelpaisi lisääkin.

Something finished, a new Bainbridge to replace the one lost. I finally found the missing ball of yarn so I could finish the set. I really used it all up, there's no more left, of Zen Strings Babewe that is. Lovely yarn, dream to knit and the result is so soft and pretty. Wouldn't mind doing something with it again.

Kämmekkäät on neulottu sormista lähtien jotta saisin kaiken langan käytettyä. Varsia tein sitten sen mitä langasta riitti. Ihan mukavan kokoiset niistä tuli. Ja kynsiäkin on taas tullut kasvateltua.

The fingerless mitts were knitted from top down to maximize the yarn use. I made the cuffs as long as I could, quite nice I'd say. And I've been growing my nails again.

Mikä hämmennytti tänään: kyllä, olen tiennyt että on olemassa kaikenlaisia hifistelykaapeleita stereosysteemeihin, mutta että sen virtajohdonkin pitäisi olla tietynlainen (kallis, totta kai)? No mutta, jos siinä nyt kerran on mikro-monofilamentteja ja nopeudessakin päästään 90% valonnopeudesta niin tottakai se on hyvä...joo, tai sitten ei. Ja entä sitten kultaiset liittimet ja suojaus optisessa kaapelissa? Ihan must...tai ei. (ja ennenkuin kukaan huomauttaa siitä ilmiselvästä kultaliitinten edusta niin kyseessä on sentään optinen kytkentä tässä). Joo, hiljaa nyt.

What baffled me today: yes, I know that there are all kinds of audiophile's wet dream cables out there, but I didn't know that you had to have a certain kind of power cord too (expensive, of course). Well, but if you have micro mono-filaments and get to 90% speed of light, well, of course it must be better...yeah, or not. And what about gold connectors and shielding on an optical cable? It's a must...or not (and before anyone brings out the obvious reason why gold connectors are better I'll point out the opticalness of this situation). Ok, I'll shut up now.

Maanantai-blah ja viikon kysymys nro 6 - Monday-blah and question of the week #6

Hyvin alkoi ensimmäinen työpäivä loman jälkeen. Olivat mokomat laajentaneet Mäkkylän myllerrystä kehällä niin että ei enää päässytkään kätevästi bussipysäkille (juu, en ole kolmeen viikkoon sielläpäin käynyt) ja piti hieman kierrellä toiselle pysäkille. Tosin eipä siinä mikään kiire sitten olisi ollutkaan kun bussi mokoma jätti vuoron välistä ja seuraava tuli puolen tunnin päästä. Jei.

Olen jo toipunut katkenneen puikon aiheuttamasta traumasta (suunnilleen), vaikka en olekaan heti ajatellut hommata korvaavaa, kun pitää tilata ja tulisi lisää lankaa kun eihän sitä nyt yksiä puikkoja voi tilata jne. Onneksi on Options-setti lohduttamassa. Puikko oli kiinni keskeneräisessä Hjertegarn Ribboo-tekeleessä josta on takakappale lähes valmis. Mutta harmikseni huomasin että siitä taitaa tulla hieman liian leveä ja koska tuo Ribboo levähtää pesussa (ja ehkä käytössäkin) taitaa olla tulossa purkamiskeikka. Mutta kannattaisiko tuo nyt pestä ja mitata? Olisi ainakin iso mallitilkku ja sitten sen ei kai pitäisi uudelleenneulomisen jälkeen pesussa levähtää?

Mutta, eteenpäin viikon kysymykseen nro 6...vastaan siihen vain englanniksi koska olen laiska.

What a nice start for my first work-day after the holidays...and a Monday too. There's a ring road near our flat where I take the bus to work on most mornings (I have other options but that is usually fast in the morning) and they are doing some major road work there, and had expanded it so that is is not possible to go to the bus stop through the area anymore (but of course they let the cars through, hah). So I had to walk faster to reach another stop though I should not have hurried for the bus I was waiting for never showed up and I had to wait for the next one. I was not a happy camper when I finally got to work.

I have somewhat gotten over the shock of the snapped needle although I have not made any immediate plans for a replacement for it takes effort and ordering and means more yarn for one can not order just one pair of needles etc. Luckily I have my Options set to comfort me. The needle was attached to my on-going Hjertegarn Ribboo-project where I have advanced so that I'm almost finished with the back piece. But, I noticed that in spite of all my calculations it looks to be a bit too big so maybe a trip to the frog pond is in order for I fear that it will grow even more after washing. But, should I wash it now so that I have the world's largest swatch? For I think that after washing the yarn is set so to speak and will not behave weirdly anymore.

But, on to SP12 question of the week #6 (I always seem to be a bit behind on these).


Questions #6

What is your favorite type of project to take along on holiday/vacation?

I prefer something small and portable, so no sweaters for me. Though wonder of all wonders, I rarely take my knitting with me on holidays, only if I know for certain I will have time to knit. Mostly I just take my knitting with me when I visit my parents, some friends and knit-meets. Though with these new more relaxed air regulations it might be possible to knit at the airport at least.

But, if I do I prefer socks or scarves. I've been dragging the scarf I'm making from my Alaskan cashmere (Skeleton Scarf from Arctic Knitting) with me to my parent's and it's on its way of becoming finished (I'm on the second ball already) and I have to find a replacement for it. I prefer something simple so I don't have to concentrate too much on it. Maybe start some new socks?

If you’d like to share a story…Tell us about a time that you packed too much knitting or were stranded without knitting.

I've never packed too much knitting...yet. But I have been stranded without knitting many times. It would have been nice to have a knit at hand those times when you have to wait at some airport for a plane that's late (but then they banned the dangerous knitting needles from hand luggage). And once I packed the wrong needles with me and couldn't do a thing! That was shocking for I had prepared myself for some serious knitting that weekend.

Another One Bites the Dust

Selvästi aliarvoin neuleyhteisön tietävyyden viime postauksessani. Ajattelin muutaman näytteen perusteella että ei tuota niin helposti tiedettäisi, mutta ehkä se käsityöharrastesuuntautuneisuus auttaa? No, jättäkää nyt kommentteja, arvon sitten jättäneiden kesken jotain kun nyt on niin helppo peesata :-)

I obviously underestimated the knowledge of the knitting community. From a few samples I thought you would not know so easily what those things were, but maybe the handicraftily minded know more about these things? But, leave comments, I'll draw the winner from the commenteers.

Muistatteko tämän? No, eilen joku löhösi sohvalla katsomassa telkkua ja kohottautui kyynärpään varaan ottamaan kaukosäädintä ja sitten kuului kova poks ja mitä sitten löytyikään? Kyllä, se on nyt entinen 4 mm Harmony irtopää. Kökköä. Mitä tästä opimme? Ei saa katsoa tv:tä ilman että neuloo, sillä muuten tätä ei olisi tapahtunut...

Do you remember this? Well, yesterday someone was vegging in front of the tv and reached out to the remote and then this snapping sound was heard under the elbow. And no, it was not bones but one of my Harmony 4 mm tips. Dang. What did we learn from all this? Do not watch tv unless you're knitting, for if I had been this would not have happened.

Taiteen virtaa - And the art was flowing

Ensin menin Kotkaan käymään vanhempien luona. Sitten siellä oli näitä posliinijuttuja jotka muistuttivat minusta ihmisiä hatuissa. Sitten, menimme kauppaan ja ostimme hiukan maalia ja rupesimme hommiin (minä ja äitini).

First, I went to Kotka to visit my parents. Then, there were these porcelain things that I said looked like men in hats. So, to a store we went and paint we brought and started cracking (my Mom and me that is).

Ja katso, ne heräsivät henkiin. Syntyi arvoisa kuninkaallinen perhe, isä ruhtinas Nikolai, äiti Aleksandra ja tytär Elena (noin lähellä itärajaa tulee ehdottomasti vain Venäläisiä hahmoja).

Lo, and behold, they came alive. There's a royal family, Father Nikolaj, Mother Alexandra and daughter Elena (that close to the eastern border what else could they be than Russians).

Except that Elena is obviously Princess Leia's blond kid sister.

On myös hajakatseinen vartiosotilas Boris, kilpineen ja tapparoineen, mutta hänestä ei valitettavasti tullut kunnon kuvaa, mukanani kun oli vain kamerakännykkä. Parin viikon päästä voisin ottaa parempia kuvia.

Kyseessä oli yhteisyritys, itse tein kuninkaallisen perheen, kissan ja kamarineidon ja äitini loput (paitsi tein Ivanin pään). Ei liene epäselvää kumpi on perheen taiteilija...mutta hänellä onkin kokemusta posliininmaalauksen saralta vuodesta -73 lähtien. Mutta hauskaa meillä oli.

There is also a shifty-eyed guard Boris, with his shield and axe but unfortunately I didn't get a good enough photo of him for I only had my camera phone with me. In a couple of weeks I'll be able to get better shots.

It was a joint effort, I produced the royal family, cat and the lady-in-waiting and my Mother did the rest (except I made Ivan's head). It's safe to say there's no question who's the artist in our family...but then again she's been painting porceline from -73.

Mutta, asiaan liittyen haluaisinkin julistaa kilpailun avatuksi: mihin näitä on käytetty ennenkuin saimme taiteellisen inspiraation? Jos et tiedä niin voit arvata, oikeiden vastausten puutteessa mielikuvituksellisin saa palkinnon. Voittajalle lähtee todennäköisesti jotain varastoista. Vastausaikaa on ensi viikon keskiviikkoon, eli arvailemaan vain.

Tietoja: kappaleet ovat siis posliinia, noin 10-15cm korkeita (useampaa kokoa) ja toiset oli tehnyt kotoinen Arabiamme ja toiset olivat leimalla F (jos tiedät mikä tehdas niin tieto olisi kiva).

But, concerning the matter I'd like to open a competition: what were these before we got our artistic inspiration? If you do not know you can guess for if there's no right answers the most imaginative one gets the price that will probably be something from the stash. Competition ends next Wednesday so hurry up.

Some info: they're made of porcelain and about 10-15 cm tall (several sizes), others were made by our Finnish Arabia and others were stamped by F (which I don't know what it is but if you do I'd appreciate if you'd let me know).

Questions of the week #4 and #5

A little update for SP 12 questions of the week - now two for the price of one!

First, question 4:

1) What yarn (that you don’t have/haven’t used) would make your stash “complete”?
2) What yarn do you never want to be without?

1) well, I don't know what would make my stash "complete", but certainly there's some yarns I would like to try...like Lorna's Laces, maybe Tilli Tomas (way overpriced but sound interesting).

2) I guess that would be wool. Can't name any brand since I don't have an absolute favourite yarn, but I would not like to be without wool.

And on to question 5:

1) Where is your favorite place to go for vacation/holiday?
2) Where is one place you’d like to go?

1) Again, on with the boring. For I don't have one.
2) Hmm...I guess I'd like to go back to the Maldives some day. If /when I have the money... And some day I'd like to visit New Zealand, Australia and Iceland.

Juhlaa - Party time

Noin, vihdoinkin valmista! Nyt on kaksi sukkaa, yksi joka jalalle - tai pingottimelle tässä tapauksessa. Ohje vaan pitäisi vielä kirjoittaa selväkieliseksi ja mitä pikemmin sitä parempi. Tuskin itsekään muistan parin viikon päästä mitä ihme lyhenteeni tarkoittavat. Mutta, valmiit kuitenkin...tai no, ehkä siellä on vielä langanpätkät päättelemättä.

Ai, ja nimi pitäisi keksiä. Ideoita?

Finally finished! Now I have two socks, one for each leg - or sock blockker in this case. All that remains is writing down the pattern in some legible format for I doubt that I'll remember what all my cryptic squiggles mean in a couple of week. Oh, well, maybe I have to weave in a couple of ends as well.

And they need a name - any suggestions?

Ja uutta pukkaa. Aloittelin jotain mustasta Hjertagarnin Ribboo-langasta (bambua ja soijaa), tässä takakappaletta. Lankaa pitäisi hankkia jostain lisää, koska sitä ei todellakaan ole tarpeeksi, nyt on käytettynä jo kaksi viidestä ja takakappale ei ole vielä ihan kainaloissakaan. En muistanut tärkeää kilon sääntöä (jos et tiedä mitä teet, osta kilo, siitä saa ainakin puseron) ja nyt se kostautuu. Jos saisin maanantaina sitä jostain lisää, kun pitäisi mennä hankkimaan myös uusia silmälaseja. Kävin perjantaina koettelukierroksella ja harmillisesti löysin melkein jokaisesta kaupasta jonkun kivan, nyt niitä mahdollisia taitaa olla viidet - vielä vaan se päätös...

And on with the new. I started something black from Hjertegarn's Ribboo (bamboo and soy), here's the back. I should get some more yarn for I've already used two balls out of the five I had and I'm not even to the arm holes yet. I didn't obey the important kilo-rule (when in doubt, buy a kilo, you can make at least one sweater out of it) and now I have to face the consequences. Maybe I can get some more on Monday when I go to choose new specs for me. I went to take a look on Friday and managed to find something in nearly every shop I went into so now I have about five possibles to choose from. All that is needed now is to choose the right one...

Nyt syntymäpäiville! Sankari täyttää neljä vuotta ja saa Hello Kittyä oikein urakalla. Äidiltä on tulossa Hello Kitty pyörä (näin sen perjantaina, se on aika...äklö) ja meiltä on tulossa pikkukamaa. On söpöä, on.

Now on to a birthday party. The party girl turns four and will get plenty of Hello Kitty as presents. Her Mom is giving her a Hello Kitty bike (I saw it on Friday and it's so cute it hurts) and we'll be giving some small stuff. Cute overload, anyone?

Kansainvälistä - Multinational

Nyt kun uusi Ulla on vihdoinkin ulkona (joo, en edes jaksannut blogata siitä kun julkaisimme sen, menin vain nukkumaan, pateettista.) niin jaksaa taas blogatakin. Kävin viime viikolla turisteeraamassa Tallinnassa äidin kanssa. Ensimmäistä kertaa tuli vietettyä yötä siellä, pari itse asiassa, joten ehti nähdä hieman enemmän. Ihan kiva reissu, voisi toistekin mennä.

Now that the new Ulla is finally out (yeah, I know, didn't even blog about it when we published it, just went to bed, how pathetic is that?) I have time and energy for blogging again. I went to Tallinn last week with my Mother. First time I spent a longer time there than just a day (two nights) so we got to see more stuff. I liked it, could go another time too.

Kävin parissa lankakaupassa ja ostin liettualaista lankaa (70% kid mohairia, 30% silkkiä).


I went to a couple of yarn stores and got some Lithuanian yarn (70 % kid mohair, 30 % silk).
