Neulojan viikko - Week in the life of a knitter

Työ alkoi ja blogaus loppui. Tai siltä se ainakin vaikuttaa...katsellaanpa miten viikko on mennyt tähän asti. Huomattavaa että tuuraan tällä viikolla töissä pomoa ja toista projektipäällikköä.

Lauantai - heräsin vähän kuuden jälkeen, 8:30 lautalla Tallinnaan kanssaneulojan kanssa, kotiuduin matkalta seuraavana päivänä noin puoli kaksi (aamuyöllä siis). Lautta tuli takaisin Helsinkiin jo puoli kahdeksalta mutta ei nyt puututa siihen.

Sunnuntai - tv:n katselua, neulomista ja koomausta. Tallinnanlankojen kuvaus tuli mieleen vasta liian myöhään.

Maanantai - töissä puoli yhdeksältä, töiden jälkeen neuletapaaminen, kotona noin 21:30. Kissanrapsutusta, vähän tv:n katselua ja nukkumaan.

Tiistai - töissä hiukan ennen kahdeksaa, töissä hieman tavallista myöhempään, kotona noin seitsemältä. Töiden jälkeen hiukan imurointia ja uuden kännykän näpläämistä (se oli syntymäpäivälahja Hannulta).

Keskiviikko - töissä yhdeksältä, töiden jälkeen ruokkimaan ystävän kissaa ja syntymäpäiväillalliselle. Huomasinpa samalla että synkkaus Nokia - MS Outlook - htc ei oikein toiminut, jokunen numero kadoksissa. Ja Nokassa on hyvää ruokaa mutta turhan pienet annokset, illallisen jälkeen teki mieli mennä hampurilaiselle mutta ei menty.

Torstai - töissä noin 8:15. Tiistaisen töissäoleilun seurauksena runsaasti plussaa ja lähdin jo puoli neljältä. Kävin ruokkimassa kissaa ja yritin viihdyttää sitä. Kaikki viihdytysyritykset päätyivät tuijotukseen, kehräykseen ja päänpuskemiseen. Olkoon. Päädyin lukemaan kirjaa ja rapsuttelemaan kissaa. Viihdytystuokion jälkeen ystävälle saunomaan, kotiin noin 23:30.

Perjantai - tiedossa toivottavasti vain puoli päivää töitä, kissanhuvitusta ja grillausta.

Neulominen jäi siis aika vähiin eikä kuvien ottamiseenkaan jäänyt aikaa. Ja neulojatko vain istuvat kotona neulomassa?

The holiday is over and I have no time to do anything else. Or do I? Let's see how my week has been so far. Oh, I'd just like to mention that I was covering for my boss and the another project manager since they're both on holiday.

Saturday - woke up a bit after six and took the 8:30 ferry to Tallinn with a fellow knitter. Came home the next day at about 1:30 (am that is). The ferry came back to Helsinki at 20:30 but let's just ignore that.

Sunday - watching tv, knitting and resting. Managed to forget to take photos of Tallinn purchases before it was too late (too dark that is).

Monday - was at work around 8:30 and after work went to a knit meet. At home around 9:30. Engaged in a bit of cat scratching and tv before bed.

Tuesday - was at work around 7:30 and stayed a bit later. At home around 7 pm, did a bit of cleaning and played with the new cell phone (it was a birthday present from Hannu).

Wednesday - at work at nine, after work went to feed a friend's cat and out for my birthday dinner. And I noticed that importing information to new cell via Nokia - MS Outlook wasn't quite successfull since I was missing some numbers. Restaurant Nokka has nice food but really small portions. Felt like going out for burger after that but didn't.

Thursday - at work around 8:15. Due to staying at work late on Tuesday managed to leave at three thirty. Went to feed and amuse the cat though all attempts at amusemet were met with stares, purring and head butting. Decided to cease attempts at amusing and instead spent the time scartching the cat and reading. After said attempt went to visit a friend.

Friday - hopefully have to work only half a day, after which I'll go spend some time with the cat and have some barbeque afterwards.

So haven't had that much time for knitting this week. And they say knitters spend all their time at home knitting.

Eteen- ja taaksepäin - Forwards and backwards

Olen neulonut, sekä eteen- että taaksepäin. Eteenpäin ovat edistyneet Opera Fichu, kirjasta Victorian Lace Today (Amazon-linkki). Kaipailin pientä peitettä hihattomaan toppi-hameyhdistelmään ja tästä tulee toivottavasti sellainen. Rakenne on ainakin mielenkiintoinen, ensin neulotaan keskiosa ja sen ympärille reunapitsi ja sitten taitellaan ja neulotaan nauhoja ja, no, siitä tulee tuollainen olkapäähörhelö. Lankana musta Wetterhoffin Silvia.

I've knitted forwards and backwards. Forwards have progressed the above Opera Fichu from Victorian Lace Today (Amazon-link). I have this sleeveless top-skirt thingy that needs something to keep the shoulders warm and hopefully this will be that something. The construction of this piece is certainly interesting: first you knit the center piece, then the edging around it and then you fold it a bit and make the ties. And lo, you have a shoulder thingy. I'm using black silk-wool for this.

Eteenpäin ovat edenneet myös isot sukat. Niin edenneet että ne ovat jo valmiit, niitä on pidetty ja ne on jopa pesty kerran. Hankalasti kuvattavaa harmaa-vihreätä lankaa joka valmiina muistuttaa kovasti maastokuosia ja koossa 46. 2 mm puikoilla. Kärjestä alkaen. Kesti. Kauan.

Mutta niistä tuli ihan sopivat, päällä ribbiä ja vartta tehty niin paljon kuin kerästä riitti (piti purkaa toisesta pari kerrosta jotta sain saman pituiset varret ilman että täytyi aloittaa uusi vyyhti). Leventelin varressa pariin otteeseen jotta niissä oli tarpeeksi tilaa. Lanka oli Trekking Hand Artin väriä Irland, yksi vyyhti meni. Toinen odottaa ja muotoutunee joskus toisiksi sukiksi.

Forward has progressed also big socks. So far that they're all done, worn and even washed once. And they're made from a very hard to photograph grey-green yarn. Toe-up. Size EU46. With 2 mm needles. Took. Ages.

But they fit and I think they look quite nice. There's rib on the top of the foot and also at the cuff. I knit as far as the yarn took me (though I had to rip about two rows from the other one to get same length for both socks without having to start a new skein) and I increased on couple of places at the cuff so as to make them fit better. I used Trekking's Hand Art in Irland and I used one skein of it. I have another one waiting and some day it'll become a pair of socks too.

Takaisinpäin olen päässyt Hiljassa. En kiinnittänyt tarpeeksi huomiota neuletiheyteen ja vaihtaessani pyöröstä tasaan yläosasta tuli löysempi ja innokkaan pitämisen seurauksena se lörpsähti liikaa ja hiha-aukoista tuli isot. Koska kuitenkin pidän (ja pidin) liiviä, niin sain vihdoinkin purettua sen kaula-aukon alkuun astija kasteltua langat. Maitolanka käyttäytyy kuitenkin kovin puuvillamaisesti ja oli innokkaasti kiharoilla runsaasta kastelemisesta huolimatta. Siiispä käärin sitä apuvälineiden ympärille. Jatkan liivin loppuun jahka lanka kuivuu.

Backwards I've gone on Hilja. Because I did not pay enough attention to the gauge the top part after switching from round to flat ended up too loose. And as a result of that the sleeve openings became quite big after a while. And since I do like the vest and would like to continue wearing it with slightly smaller openings I finally ripped it back to the beginning of the V. The milk yarn behaves very much like cotton and wanted to stay curly despite all the soaking. So I used some props to help me keep it straight. And I will re-do the vest once the yarn is dry.

Alkutekijöiksi on sen sijaan päätynyt useampikin tuotos. Tässä on epäonnista neulekonetunikaa (kaksi takaosaa), yksi koneella tehty huivinalku (liian paksu), paidanalku (liian iso) ja viimeisimpänä muttei vähäisimpänä Rogue. Totesin että kun se ei ollut liikahtanut valmiiseen päin yli vuoteen, niin tuskin se siitä enää etenee. Pidän kyllä mallista mutta se olisi vaatinut muotoiluja selkään, omani pussitti ikävästi vaikka muuten yritinkin tehdä tyköistuvaa kokoa. Ei se aina vaan onnistu.

Even more backwards progressed these. Here you can find my unlucky machine knit class sweater (two back pieces), a machine knit third of a scarf (too thick), one start of a sweater (too big) and last but not least Rogue. I decided to rip it since I haven't done anything for it in over a year and I doubt that I will. I do like the pattern but mine would have needed some back shaping for it bagged there unflatteringly even though I chose a smallish size. Well, you can't succeed every time.

Asioita mielessä - Things on my mind

On eräs asia joka on askarruttanut mieltäni aina silloin tällöin. Se liittyy typeryyteen ja niiden syihin. Jos selittäisin. Teen mallitilkkuja. Joskus jopa pesen ne. Ja mittaan ne ennen ja jälkeen pesun. Välillä kokeilen erilaisia mallineuleita ja katson miltä ne näyttävät neulottuna.

There's this one thing that's been on my mind on and off for a while. It's to do with stupidity and the reasons of it. Let me explain. I do swatches. Sometimes I even wash them. And I measure them before and after washing. Sometimes there's a noticeable difference and sometimes not. I try out different patterns to see what looks nice and what doesn't.

Minulla on muutama muistikirja jotka olen hankkinut sitä varten että voin tehdä muistiinpanoja neulomuksistani. Pinkki ei ole ihan minua mutta se jäi tänne kun päätin että se on hiukan liian painava jotta viitsisin maksaa sen lähettämisestä toiselle puolelle maailmaa (vaihtojuttu), mutta ainakin se on näkyvä ja löydän sen useimmiten. Mutta sen sijaan että käyttäisin niitä siihen tarkoitukseen mihin ne hankin...

I have some notebooks that I've gotten specifically for making notes about my knitting in them. The pink one is not really me but it stayed with me after I decided it was too heavy to send to foreign lands by post (a swap thing). But at least it is highly visible and I can usually find it. But instead of using them for what I got them for...

...teen muistiinpanojani aika usein muualle. Kuten printattujen (ja käytettyjen) ohjepapereiden takapuolelle, käytettyihin kirjekuoriin, mainoksiin tai muuhun mitä nyt sattuu löytymään. Jos nyt teen mitään muistiinpanoja vaan päätän luottaa mahtavaan muistiini (no ihan niin, totta kai muistan vielä kahden kuukauden kuluttua mitä puikkoja käytin minkäkin mallitilkun tekemiseen, saati sitten kahden päivän). Tätä olen mietiskellyt, että miksi näin. Onko tämä laajempikin ongelma vai onko se vain minun? Miksi on neuloja typerä?

...I tend to use other things, like backs of printed patterns, empty envelopes and even flyers and other advertisement material. If I bother to make them at all and not rely on my memory (yeah, right, like anyone can remember what needles they used for that swatch two months later, or even two days). And I've wondered why that is. Is this a widespread problem or is it just me? Why is a knitter stupid?

Tekisi mieli muttei viitsi - I would like to but I won't

Mitähän sitä kirjoittaisi? Tekisi mieli rutista Interweave Knitsin surkeasta postituksesta, mutta se on jo hieman vanha juttu. Tosin...tekisi mieli sanoa heille että kannattaisi ehkä vaihtaa firmaan joka käyttää hieman modernimpia välineitä kuin etanoita ja soutuveneitä. Sitten tekisi mieli valittaa myös Knitpicksin surkeasta palvelusta, mutta en tiedä viitsinkö tehdä sitäkään. Tosin vinkkinä heille: jos arkipyhä vaikuttaa toimitusaikaan muutenkin kuin ko. päivän osalta kannattaisi siitä kertoa nettisivuilla. Ja myöskin jos tilaukset eivät ko. pyhän (tai muun) ansiosta lähde sivuilla mainittuna aikan, kannattaisi siitäkin myös infota. Ja asiakaspalvelua voisi parantaa vastaamalla mm. sähköposteihin ja soittaessa anteeksipyyntö/pahoittelu tekisi asiakkaan mielen paljon paremmaksi.

What should I write about? I would like to complain about the abysmal mailing service but I think it's a bit old now. Though...I would like to tell them they might think about switching to a company that uses somewhat more modern ways to deliver mail than with the aid of snails and rowing boats. Then Iä'd like to complain about the crappy Knitpicks service, but I don't know if I should do that either. Though, as a hint: if a bank holiday affects the delivery time other than for that day, it might be a good idea to mention that on the web site. Or, if the deliveries don't leave in the time that delivery information-page says (dute to said holiday or some other) it might be a good idea to mention that too. And as for customer service, answering the emails would be a nice touch and a "sorry" makes the customer feel so much better.

Viikonloppu oli kyllä varsinaista laiskottelua. En käynyt ulkona ollenkaan, laiskottelin kotona - katsoin töllöä, neuloin jne. Sain mm. tehtyä mallitilkkuja ja Icarus on nyt tilassa jossa se oli ennen purkua (lankaa on nyt paljon enemmän jäljellä kuin 17 metriä, joten pitäisi riittää) ja sain pääteltyä langanpäät Cadenza-takista ja se on myös kasteltu ja kuivateltu. Kiitos nappikommenteista, iso helmiäisnappi ja metallinen kukkanappi pääsivät toiselle kierrokselle. Ehkä istun vain hetken ja mietiskelen nappiuden sopivuutta?

The weekend was nice and relaxing. I didn't do much, just stayed in the house, watched tv, knitted etc. I did some swatches and Icarus is now in the state it was before I admitted I did not have enough yarn and ripped. Now I should have enough yarn (fingers crossed). I wove in the ends of the Cadenza cardi and blocked it. Thank you for the button comments, the big mother of pearl button and the one with the flowery details are on round two. Maybe I should just take my time and contemplate on the zen of the button?

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Teinpä tällaisen pikkutyön. Minulla oli kaksi kerää vaaleanvihreää Sirdarin Snuggly Baby Bamboo-lankaa ja siitä se idea sitten lähti. Tuo kuvassa noin kainaloiden kohdalla näkyvä poikittaisraita johtuu siitä, että tein mekon hieman epätavallisesti, loin virkkausaloituksella silmukat ja tein yläosan ensin. Ja miksikö tein näin? No, ajattelin että saisin kahdesta kerästä vaikka liivin ja että jos tekisin yläosan ensin voisin jatkaa helmaa niin pitkälle kuin lankaa riittäisi. Mutta huomasin pian että tarvitsen lisää lankaa, koska yläosa vei jo puolitoista kerää. Samaa värjäyserää ei tienkään enää saisi, joten tein siis raidan, ja mielestäni se piristää mekkosta huomattavasti.

I made this small something. I had two balls of Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo in light green and I went from that. The stripe you can see near the arm openings is because I did this in a bit of an odd way for I did a provisional cast-on and knit the top part first. Why did I do that? Well, because I had this idea that I might be able to do something with just the two balls I had, so I'd first make the top and then continue downwards for as long as I could with the yarn I had. But I quickly came to the conclusion that I would need more yarn for the top part took 1.5 balls of yarn already. So that's why I made the stripe and I think it's a nice detail.

Sitten vaan kullanväriset napit olkapäille (miksi kaikki kivat lastennapit ovat niin pieniä?) ja silityskukkanen rintaan ja kas, valmis mekko. Se on jo uudella omistajallaan ja ihan sopivan kokoinenkin, katsotaan jos saan myöhemmin kuvia mekosta "in action". Eilen oli aika toivotonta saada mitään aikaiseksi kun kuvassa pyöri innostunut isokokoinen koira.

Mutta, hieman tietoa: ohje on omasta päästä, lähtökohtana minulla oli kaksi mittaa: hiha-aukon korkeus (tosin tein niistä korkeammat) ja leveys. Leventelin sopivasti että tuloksena oli A-linjainen liivitunikahamonen. Koko noin 1.5 vuotias ja lankaa meni hieman päälle kolme kerää.

Then I added golden buttons on the shoulders (why all the nice kid's buttons are so small?) and ironed on a small flower motif and there it was. Finished. It's now on its new owner already and it fits nicely. I'm hoping to get some photos of it "in action" later for last night it was hopeless getting any photos for there was an over-eager large dog around.

But, a bit of info: the pattern is purely "knit as you go", I had two measurements, the height of the arm opening (though I made them bigger) and the width. I made some increases so that it turned out nice. The size is about 1.5 yo and I spent a bit over three balls of yarn.

Sain eilen syntymäpäivälahjan ja siellä oli tämä hauska pankki. En tosin tarvitse neulontatunteja, että otsikkona olisi ehkä voinut ennemminkin olla "I'm savin' up for yarn!" mutta muuten hauska esine. Vai mitä pidätte päälliosasta? Eikun vaan säästämään euroja luksuslankoja varten.

I got a birthday present yesterday and amongst the other things there was this tin bank. Though I don't think I need knitting lessions so the title could have been for example "I'm savin' up for yarn!". Other than that it's a delightful little thing. Or how do you like the top design? Now I'll just begin saving up my euros for luxury yarns.

Tapahtuneita asioita - Things that happened

Hyvin oli tiedetty posliinitöpöt, kyseessä olivat siis sähkötolpan eristeet. Arvonta sensijaan ei sujunut niinkuin olin ajatellut, koska kaavailin kissaa onnettareksi. Tein pienet paperitollot numerolapuista ja yritin saada kissaa kiinnostumaan niistä. Ei tulosta. Seuraavaksi laitoin ne paperipussiin jota rapistelin. Tulosta oli, mutta kissa luuli saavansa jotain muuta, paperitollot eivät edelleenkään herättäneet kiinnostusta. Siispä turvauduin satunnaislukugeneraattoriin joka arpoi voittajaksi kommentoijan nro 17 eli San. Jos laitat osoitetiedot mailitse niin katsotaan josko jotain sopivaa tulisi sinnepäin.

The knitters were very knowledgeable, the porcelain stubs were indeed isolators used in electric poles. The drawing of the winned did not go as planned, for I had thought to use the cat to do the drawing. So, I made small paper balls out of numbered tickets and tried to get the cat interested in them. No luck. Next I put them into a paper bag which I shook at the cat who thought she'd be getting something interesting and couldn't care less about the paper balls. So, I had to use a random number generator to drawn the lucky winner number 17, San that is.

Jotain valmista vaihteeksi, uusi Bainbridge kadonneen tilalle. Löysin lopulta kadonneen pikkukerän lankaa ja sain setin valmiiksi. Nyt se on käytetty kaikki, Zen Stringin Bambewe siis. Ihanaa lankaa neuloa ja kauniit värit, kelpaisi lisääkin.

Something finished, a new Bainbridge to replace the one lost. I finally found the missing ball of yarn so I could finish the set. I really used it all up, there's no more left, of Zen Strings Babewe that is. Lovely yarn, dream to knit and the result is so soft and pretty. Wouldn't mind doing something with it again.

Kämmekkäät on neulottu sormista lähtien jotta saisin kaiken langan käytettyä. Varsia tein sitten sen mitä langasta riitti. Ihan mukavan kokoiset niistä tuli. Ja kynsiäkin on taas tullut kasvateltua.

The fingerless mitts were knitted from top down to maximize the yarn use. I made the cuffs as long as I could, quite nice I'd say. And I've been growing my nails again.

Mikä hämmennytti tänään: kyllä, olen tiennyt että on olemassa kaikenlaisia hifistelykaapeleita stereosysteemeihin, mutta että sen virtajohdonkin pitäisi olla tietynlainen (kallis, totta kai)? No mutta, jos siinä nyt kerran on mikro-monofilamentteja ja nopeudessakin päästään 90% valonnopeudesta niin tottakai se on hyvä...joo, tai sitten ei. Ja entä sitten kultaiset liittimet ja suojaus optisessa kaapelissa? Ihan must...tai ei. (ja ennenkuin kukaan huomauttaa siitä ilmiselvästä kultaliitinten edusta niin kyseessä on sentään optinen kytkentä tässä). Joo, hiljaa nyt.

What baffled me today: yes, I know that there are all kinds of audiophile's wet dream cables out there, but I didn't know that you had to have a certain kind of power cord too (expensive, of course). Well, but if you have micro mono-filaments and get to 90% speed of light, well, of course it must be better...yeah, or not. And what about gold connectors and shielding on an optical cable? It's a must...or not (and before anyone brings out the obvious reason why gold connectors are better I'll point out the opticalness of this situation). Ok, I'll shut up now.

Tylsää ja ikävää - Boring and unpleasant

Kaikki on taas huonosti:

• olen neulonut noin kiljoona kilometriä raitapaidan hihaa ja silti se on vasta kyynärpäässä
• viimeistelyinnostus loppui alkuunsa kun neulekonetakin kauluksesta tuli kiero ja se pitäisi purkaa - ja vielä olisi Rogue viimeistelemättä
• jalkaa koskee, kait sitä pitäisi vihdoinkin mennä näyttämään lääkärille (nekin on ikäviä)
• Blogger vaihtoi blogin kielen suomeksi
  
• ja lisäksi mun neulomispaikka on vallattu!

Everything is wrong again:

• I have knitted about a zillion kilometers of the stripy sweater sleeve but it is still only down to elbow
• my finishing frenzy got a sudden end when I noticed that the collar of the machine class cardi was crooked and needed redoing - and I still have Rogue to finish
• my leg hurts again, must start thinking about going to the doctor (and they are unpleasant too)
• Blogger switched my blog language to Finnish
  
• and to top it all, my knitting spot has been taken over!
