Jouluaskartelua - Christmas Crafts

Tänään tein hieman jouluaskartelua. Otetaan kranssipohja, virkattuja pallukoita, metallilankaa...

 

Today was time for some christmas crafts. So, take one twig wreath, some crocheted balls, metal wire...

...bambuisia syömäpuikkoja, cocktailtikkuja, ompelulankaa, ohutta huivilankaa, vanua, koristenauhaa...

 

...bamboo chopsticks, cocktail sticks, sewing thread, lace yarn, filler, decorative ribbon...

 ...ja kah, siinähän se, uusi kranssi. Tässä on useamman vuoden tullut käyteltyä ihan sinänsä kivaa mutta jo tylsää kaupasta ostettua muovikranssia. Sain vihdoinkin aikaan hieman enemmän neulojatyylisen kranssin.

 ...and there you have it, a new wreath. We've had the same old (but quite nice) plastic store-bought wreath. And finally I managed to make something a bit more knitter-like to decorate our front door.

Kranssin keskelle tein lumiukkoasetelman. Pallukat on virkattu Schoeller+Stahlin Teddy-langasta ja täytetty vanulla. Silmät ja napit on ihan normaalia ompelulankaa, kädet ja luuta lankapäällystettyä metallilankaa. Huivit on neulottu käteen osuneista pitsilangoista. Ja koska epäilen oksakranssin kestävyyttä - se nimittäin varisi aika paljon jo kokoonpanon aikana - en liimannut koristeita paikalleen vaan pisimmät ukot on kiinnitetty kranssin läpi tungettuun värjättyyn bambusyömäpuikkoon ja kiinnittämisen apuna käytin vielä lankaa ja cocktailtikkuja. 

Ja jotta homma ei menisi ihan söpöilyksi, niin keskimmäinen lumiukko on hieman...erilainen, Calvin&Hobbes-tyyliin.

I made a bunch of snowmen to decorate the wreath. The snowmen are assembled from crocheted balls (the yarn used was Schoeller+Stahl Teddy) and filled with filler. Eyes and buttons are sewing thread, hands and broom are thread-covered metal wire. Scarves were knitted from some random lace yarn. And since I have doubts on how the twig wreath will wear (it shed quite a bit during assembly) I did not glue anything in place so that I can change the wreath if I have to. Instead I attached the two bigger snowmen to a dyed bamboo chopstick with thread and also anchored to place using cocktail sticks.

And to avoid being too cute, the middle snowman is a bit...diffrent, in the style of Calvin&Hobbes.

Riemuraitaa - Bold stripes

 
Teinpä sukat, Jaywalkerit, jo toisen kerran. Malli sopii hyvin itseraidoittuville langoille, tästäkin olisi tullut tylsää tasaraitaa.

 

Made some socks, Jaywalkers, the second pair I've made. I think this pattern suits self-striping yarns very well, for this would have been quite boring with its boring stripes.

Lanka oli Supersocken jotain, ostettu Karnaluksista elokuussa. Sukat menivät äidille ja hän valitsi itse langankin. En nyt voi väittää kauheasti tästä väriyhdistelmästä pitäväni mutta kyllä niistä nyt ihan kivat sukat tuli. Ja, koska tunnun olevan kykenemätön neulomaan täysin ohjeiden mukaan muita kuin pitsihuiveja, tuli näihinkin ohjeesta poiketen 1o1n-joustin varrensuuhun.

Jaywalker on ohjeena kyllä hiukan ongelmallinen,  sillä tuosta kantapään kohdasta tulee helposti liian kapea. Jouduinkin aloittamaan kerran uudestaan kun valitsin ensin pienimmän koon (äidillä on koon 38 jalka joka on aika kapea) ja siitä olisi tullut aivan liian kapea. Toiseksi pienin koko tuotti napakan mutta kuitenkin vielä jalkaan menevän sukan. Ehkä hieman pidempi kantalappu auttaisi tilannetta jos vielä kolmannet Jaywalkerit joskus teen.

 

The yarn I used was Supersocke something, bought at Karnaluks in Tallinn in August. The socks went to my Mom and she chose the yarn too. I can't say I'm too fond of this colour combination but the socks turned out quite nice after all. And, since I seem to be incapable of knitting anything else than lace scarves as is written these have 1x1 ribbing at the cuff.

Jaywalker as a pattern is a bit problematic, for the stitch pattern does not stretch much and the circumference around the heel can easily be too small. I had to start again for I had chosen the smallest size (my Mom has size 38 feet and they're quite slim) and it was too tight. The next size turned out much better even though they're still quite fitted. If I make a third pair at some point I think I might do longer heel flap so that I could get a bit more stitches to that point. For I quite like the slim ankles and would not want to add stitches there.

Ja lauantaina Tampereelle messuille! Bussikyydillä tällä kertaa, kun VR:n tarjous meni jotenkin ohi... Aikaa on siis rajatusti mutta toisaalta pääsee messuhallille perille asti.

And to Tampere next Saturday, there's the Finnish handicrafts fair. ! By bus this time because I missed the cheap train tickets... So, the time there is quite limited but at least we get straight to the exhibition center.

Karuselli - Carousel

Vietin viikonlopun Itä-Suomessa vanhempien luona, isänpäivä ja kummipojan syntymäpäivä ja sitä rataa. Sisältyi viikonloppuun hieman näpertelyäkin, kun äiti oli keksinyt sopivasti puuhaa.

Tehtävä: 11 eripuolilta maailmaa ostettua lasipalloa piti saada nätisti esille roikkumaan. 

Tästä lähdettiin, kyseessä on vanha Aarikan kynttelikkö.

 

I spent the weekend in Eastern Finland, Father's day and godson's birthday and so on. I managed to do some other crafts beside knitting for Mom had needs.

My mission (and I chose to accept it): arrange 11 glass balls in a pleasing arrangement. 

The above is where I started from, it was an old chandelier from Aarikka.

Tarvikkeina oli kullanväristä metalliketjua ja metallilankaa ja 10 lasipalloa - tai no, kaksi niistä oli oikeastaan lasisia lintuja. Mutta onttoja yhtäkaikki.

 

 

What I had to work with was some gold-coloured chain and metal wire and 10 glass balls - well, actually two of them were birds. But they were all hollow.

Tämmöistä siitä sitten rupesin vääntämään.

Ja tässä lopputulos, siitä tuli oiken nätti. Kuva ei tee sille oikein oikeutta, mutta minkäs teet kun kameran akku tilttasi ja käytössä oli iPhone ja pimeähkö olohuone. Nimesin sen Karuselliksi.

And here's the end result. It turned out quite pretty. The picture does not do it justice but that was the best I could do with iPhone camera and darkish livingroom.  I named it Carousel.

Lasipallot ovat ympäri maailmaa: päärynänmutoiset Roomasta, pari läpinäkyvää Riikan lentokentältä, lasilinnut Pentikiltä Lappeenrannasta ja alimmainen pallo taitaa itseasiassa olla myös Lappeenrannasta jostain pienestä käsityöpajasta.

Yksi paikka on vielä tyhjänä, mutta siihen on tarkoitus tulla myös lasilintu. Huomasin vain hieman liian myöhään että tarvitaan vielä yksi läpinäkyvä killutin täydentämään yläriviä ja kaupat olivat jo kiinni.

Mutta näin tänä viikonloppuna.

The glass balls are from around the world: the pear-shaped are from Rome, couple of clear glass balls we found at Riga airport, the glass birds are from Pentik and they're from Lappeenranta where I believe the big one is from also.

There's one space empty but it will hold a glass bird later. I noticed a bit too late that I need one more clear one to complete the upper row so the shops were closed already.

But that's from this weekend.

Bridgewater

Olen neulonutkin, vaikka tuntuu että mitään ei saa aikaan. Ehkä syynä on se, että neulon kaksi "puolijoukkuetelttaa" melkein peräperää. Ensimmäinen - josta ei valitettavasti ole kuvia - osoittautui jotenkin pieneksi, joten päätin neuloa sitten hieman eri langasta isomman version.

I've knitted, even though it feels I have not finished anything. Maybe the reason is that I've knit two quite substantive shawls in a row. The first - which I unfortunately do not have very good photos of - turned out to be somewhat small so I decided to knit a larger one using different yarn.

Tässä se sitten on,  kyseessä on Jared Floodin Bridgewater. Ihastuin muotoon ja tiettyyn vähäeleisyyteen. En ole kovin pitsisten huivien ystävä ja tässä sitä oli sopivassa suhteessa.

Here it is, Jared Flood's Bridgewater. I liked the shape and the understated elegance of the design. I do not care for overly lacy scarves and this had it in just the right amount.

Huivissa neulotaan ensin keskineliö, siitä poimitaan silmukat reunasta ja neulotaan ensimmäinen pitsikuvio keskeltä ulospäin. Sitten tehdään reunapitsi poikittain. Reunapitsissä meinasi mennä hermo, mutta tuli se lopulta valmiiksi.

The shawl is constructed so that you first knit the center garter-stitch square, pick up stitches around it and knit the first lace pattern from that. After which you knit the edging lace sideways. The lace edging took ages and was very boring but got finished eventually.

Tosin reunapitsin valmistumista viivästytti se, että lanka loppui kesken, tietysti noin parikymmentä senttiä ennen toista reunaa. Lanka on Huivi-Puffaa ja tietysti custom-värjäys joten olin ihan varma etten saisi sitä lisää. Onneksi Äiti-Puffa löysi samaa lankaa vielä yhden vyyhdin varastoistaan joten sain neulottua huivin loppuun. Lankaa meni loppujenlopuksi siis karvan yli kaksi vyyhtiä ja painoa tulee siis hieman päälle 200 g.

Although I got delayed in finishing the edging lace because I ran out of yarn. And of course about 20 centimeters before reaching the other end. The yarn in question is Huivi-Puffa and of course a custom dye so I was absolutely sure I could not get it more. Luckily I was wrong and Äiti-Puffa managed to find one more skein of the same colourway from her stash so I got to finish my scarf. All in all it took a bit over two skeins and so it weighs a bit over 200 grams.

Tietysti minulta sitten jäi lähes täysi kerä lankaa, jolla olen aloittanut jo uuden projektin. Katsotaan miten nyt käy...

Se on täällä, se on sievä - ja löytyypä sitä jo jostain kaupoistakin ja ensi viikolla ainakin.

Prinsessa ilman hernettä - Princess Without the Pea

Tein pienen viikonloppumatkan muutaman ystävän kanssa - meitä taisi olla melkein kaksikymmentä. Olimmen linnaneitoilemassa, alla on linna.

I did a bit of a weekend getaway with a few friends - about twenty or so. We went to play princess in the castle and here was our castle.

Viikonloppu, varsinkin lauantai meni todella nopeasti. Osansa tietysti oli silläkin että ranteessa ei ollut kelloa joten ajantaju katosi hyvin. Tosin eipä sitä kelloa olisi ehtinyt vilkuillakaan kun oli muuta puuhaa. 

The weekend, especially Saturday, went by really fast. Not having a watch on the wrist may have had something to do with it, easier to loose track of time. Though not that I'd have had remembered to watch the time anyway, had too much fun.

Sain valmiiksi yhden parin sukkia (no, toinen valmistui jo aiemmin). Ensimäiset epäparin sukat, Noroa tietysti. Ihan vaan vinkkinä, että kolmen kerroksen raidat eivät ole kaikkein kätevimmät neuloessa, vaikka lopputulos näyttääkin ihan nätiltä. Ja ei, minusta ei tullut norosukkalangan ylintä ystävää.

I finished a pair of socks (well, I had one sock done already). My first non-matching pair of socks, Noro of course. Hint - three row stripes are not very handy but they do sure look nice. And no, I still do not love Noro sock yarn.

Ja aloitin toista, siitä äidin ostamasta sukkalangasta. Hieman meinasi tulla rumasukkaa, sillä näissä ei kyllä ole maailmankaikkeuden nätein väriyhdistelmä, mutta vaihto Jaywalkereihin pelasti tilanteen.

And started another. I almost managed to make some ugly pair of socks, but then switched to Jaywalkers and I think I'm saved.

Prinssi tuli kylään - Prince Came To Visit

Pidin perjantaina vapaapäivän ja lähdin neulojaporukan (ja parin äidin) kanssa Tallinnaan. Ensimmäisenä vierailukohteena oli Karnaluks, ja sieltä teinkin suurimmat ostokseni. Ostin kasan nappeja, pari kirjontalankaa ja pari ommeltavaa kukkaronkehystä.

I had last Friday off and went to Tallinn with a group of knitters (and a couple of moms). Our first shopping destination was of course Karnaluks where I made my biggest purchases. I bought some metal buttons, some cross stitch yarn and a couple of sew-on purse frames.

Lankaa ostin peräti kerän, tuon oikeanpuolisen. Ajatuksen on tehdä jonkinlainen lumiukkokranssi jouluksi. Äidiltäni sain tuon vasemmanpuoleisen kerän, sukkalankaa. Siitä pitäisi tulla sukat - äidilleni.

Yarn I bought too, that skein on the right. The idea is to make some kind of amigurumi snowmen and use them to make some kind of decoration for xmas. My mom gave me the skein on the left, some sock yarn which will become socks - for my mom.

Aika surkeat lankaostokset siis. Mutta, nyt ei vaan mikään houkutellut niin paljon että olisin viitsinyt vaivautua ostamaan. Lisäksi siellä oli kuuma, sekä kaupassa että koko kaupungissa. Ja entäs se prinssi sitten? Hän on nimeltään Wladimir ja on Kusmi teen maku. Löysin paria laatua Kaubamajan ruokaosastolta ja Wladimir lähti mukaan.

Pretty lame results for this yarn shopping expedition. But, nothing yelled at me to get my attention and demanded to come home with me. Besides, it was hot, both in the store and in the city. And what about the prince then? Well, he's called Wladimir and he's a flavour of Kusmi tea. I found couple of flavours at Kaubamaja and Wladimir came home with me.

Kätevä - Handy

Taloon tuli hieman Colourmartin lankoja, viittä väriä, vyyhdillä. Ajatus oli pestä langat ennen käyttöä, mutta jos ne tunkee pesukoneeseen noin, niin tulee sotkua - myös pesupussissa, kokemusta on. Käsinpesu ei ollut vaihtoehto, koska vyyhtejä oli kuitenkin kymmenen.

I got some oiled Colourmart yarns, five colours, on skein this time. The plan was to wash the yarns before use but if you stick them like that into a washing machine, it will get messy - even inside a washing bag, I've done it. Handwashing wasn't an option for I had ten skeins.

Kaapissa oli kuitenkin sopivasti rikkinäisiä sukkahousuja odottamassa pölynpyyhintäkäyttöä (niillä saa kätevästi villakoirat pois vaikeista paikoista) ja otin ne ja rupesin saksimaan. 

 

I had some panty-hose with ladders, waiting to be used for dusting (good for those hard to reach places). So I took them, a pair of scissors and started cutting.

Jalka irti ja vyyhti pussiin.  

  

Off with the leg! And the skein in.

Päät solmulle ja pesukoneeseen. 

 

 

 Tie the ends together and throw them into the washing machine.

Kissanvaatteita - Kitty Clothes

Lauantaina kävin 5-vuotissyntymäpäivillä. Ja koska lahjojen vieminen on kohteliasta, niin olin varautunut. Tein kyseiselle neidille joululahjaksi Hello Kitty-nuken ja silloin jo ajattelin että en tee yhdellä kertaa niin paljon vaatteita vaan teen sitten syntymäpäivälahjaksi lisää.

Niinpä sitten pistin koukun heilumaan ja syntyi pari asustekertaa lisää.

On Saturday I went to a 5-year birthday party. And because it is polite to bear gifts I was prepared. I made a Hello Kitty doll as a Christmas present and then I thought that I would not make that many clothes then but instead make few more as a birthday present. Which I did.

Novitan Cannes-langasta (inhottavaa, inhottavaa lankaa virkata) syntyi boleroasu. Boleron kohdalla fuskasin enkä jaksanut virkata hihakappaleita erillisenä vaan virkkasin ne pyörönä suoraan hiha-aukkoihin. Näkeehän sen tuosta jäljestä mutta eipä se haittaa.

I made a bolero set using Novita Cannes (hateful, hateful yarn to crochet with). I modified the bolero pattern a bit for I was too lazy to crochet the sleeves separately. Instead I crocheted them straight to the sleeve openings. Which you can see when you look at the finished piece but who cares, not me.

Settihän ei olisi setti ilman sitä toista osaa, tässä tapauksessa mekkoa. Mekosta tuli aika tanakka, joten tässä ei ole takapuolella minkäänlaista kiinnitystä kun se näytti pysyvän päällä ilmankin. Kovin on keväinen väriyhdistelmä, minusta. Väriyhdistelmä valikoitui niinkin vankoilla perusteilla kuin että sain langan kummityttöni äidiltä lahjoituksena.

A set would not be a set without the other part, here it is a dress. The dress came out quite thick, so I did not put any closure system on the back side, it seemed to stay on pretty well without one. Very springy colour combination, I'd say. The combination I chose with firm reasons - namely I got the yarn from the girl's mom.

Sitten röyhelömekko, joka saajan mielestä kyllä muistutti yöpaitaa. Ehkä se on se hempeä vaaleansininen väri tai röyhelöt, tiedä sitä sitten. Tätä mallia en ollut aiemmin koittanut, se löytyi samasta ohjekirjasta mutta hieman eri kokoisen Hello Kitty-hahmon päältä. Virkkasin tuon siis hieman arpapelillä ja ajattelin että kai se suunnilleen sopii ja sopihan se oikein hyvin. Hihoissa meni joku pieleen kun niistä piti kuvan mukaan tulla puhvisellaiset mutta ei nuo minun hihat kyllä yhtään puhvita.

Next is a dress with a frill which looks like sleepwear, according to the recipient. Maybe it's the colour or the shape or the frill, I don't really know. I haven't made this pattern previously, I found it in the same book but it was for a different sized doll. So, I just made it and hoped that it would fit. Luckily it did. There's something wrong with the sleeves though, for according to the pattern picture they should be puff sleeves but there's no puffing happening here.

Tässä käytin ohuempaa lankaa (Teetee Primavera) ja kaula-aukko on aika suuri joten päätin tehdä taakse nappikiinnityksen. Tai pompulahan tuo on ehkä enemmänkin, virkattu napinkaltainen esine. 

This was made out of thinner yarn (TeeTee Primavera) and the neck opening is quite big so I decided to make a button closure on the back. Or it's more of a pompom, crocheted button-like object.

Vielä yksi, eli takki. Vaikka värit käyvät yhteen rimpsumekon kanssa, niin ei niitä ehkä kuitenkaan voi pitää samalla kertaa. Takin hihat ovat aika kapeat ja rimpsumekossa taas riittää hihaa, joten niiden laittaminen päällekkäin voi olla aika survomista. Hihat tein tässäkin suoraan kädenteihin. Lankana tässä taisi olla joku Debbie Blissin Rialto-versioista.

One more, a coat. Even though the colours compliment the frilly frock, I don't think the Kitty can wear them both at the same time. For the sleeves of the jacket are quite narrow and the frock has quite wide sleeves so putting the coat on the dress might require a bit of work. The sleeves are, once again, crocheted straight on the sleeve openings. The yarn was probably one version of the Debbie Bliss Rialto family.

Näitä pikkujuttuja on välillä ihan kiva näpertää, harvoin sitä saa parissa päivässä valmiiksi neljää vaatekappaletta. Rusetteja en nyt tehnyt kun mekko- ja takkilangat tuli käytettyä noihin vaatekappaleihin suunnilleen kokonaan. Ja Cannesin virkkaamisessa loppui into kesken. Ainoa ongelma on nyt vaan että mihin mä ne loppu-Cannesit tungen?

These small things are really fun to make once in a while for it's not often I manage to finish four pieces of clothing in just a few days. This time I did not make any bows for I used up practically all the yarn while making the coat and dress. And I just got fed up working with Cannes. Only question now is what will I do with the rest of the Cannes?

Puuttuvia paloja - Missing Bits

Pääsin melkein taas blogaamisen makuun kun homma taas keskeytyi. Keskiviikkona, 2.5 töissä rupesi tuntumaan epämääräistä vatsakipua joka päivän mittaan yltyi. Lähdin töistä pois moisen vuoksi, ajattelin että vatsa oli taas ärtynyt syystä x (se tekee sitä aina välillä) ja että loikoilu sängyssä vatsallaan auttaisi. No eipä auttanut, meni koko yökin pyöriessä kun asennonvaihdot herättivät. Tie vei torstaina työpaikkalääkärin kautta Jorvin päivystykseen ja siitä samana iltana leikkaukseen. Umpilisäke oli tulehtunut ja se poistettiin. Siitä seurasi viikon sairasloma ja toipumista.

Alkupäivinä vietin aikaa lähinnä sohvalla katsellen televisiota - edes neulominen ei oikein huvittanut. Sunnuntaina aloitin ulkoilureissut ja siitä se olo sitten vähitellen parani. Nyt operaatiosta on muistona vielä lievästi turvonnut maha, kolme reikää ja erinäisiä mustelmia, epämääräistä kipua ja kiristystä navan tienoilla ja hankaluuksia mm. sängystä nousemisessa ja nukkumisasennoissa.

I almost got back to blogging when I had to stop again. On Wednesday, May 2nd, at work I started feeling this annoying stomach ache. I had to leave early because of that but  I thought my stomach had just got upset about something, as often happens, and that laying in bed on my stomach would soon set things right. But it didn't help and the night between Wednesday and Thursday I spent on the sofa with very little sleep for when I moved about too much I woke up because of the discomfort. Thursday morning I visited the doctor and she sent me to the local hospital. The same day I was operated due to acute appendicitis. I got some holes in my stomach and a week off from work to recuperate.

The first few days I spent mainly on the sofa watching telly - I did not even feel up to knitting. On Sunday I started walking outside and I got slowly better. Now all I have left of the operation is some sore scabs on my stomach, slight swelling and some bruises, some vague pains and aches especially around the navel and difficulties getting out of the bed and such.

Mutta, neulomisen aloitin taas. Sain kevään neulekonekurssin viimeisillä kerroilla melkein valmiiksi paidan, Rikun (Colourmart) mohair/merinosta (20/80). Melkein, koska resorien kohdalla tuli hankaluuksia. Jätin resorit viimeiseksi koska aikaa oli niin vähän jäljellä ja halusin saada paidan sileän osan ainakin tehtyä. Resorit olisin sitten voinut tehdä vaikka omalla koneella. No, pääsin kuitenkin resorien kimppuun ja homma tuntui sujuvan vallan mallikkaasti kunnes tuli aika irrottaa kappale koneesta. Eipä näyttänyt enää niin hyvältä, lanka oli katkeillut useasta kohdin ja joustin oli täynnä reikiä. Mikäs siinä sitten, otin puikot kauniiseen käteen ja olen hitaasti tikutellut joustimia käsin. Kohta on jäljellä enää kaulus - en ole ihan varma millainen siitä tulee vielä.

But, I'm back to knitting now. During the last few times of the machine knitting class I almost finished a pullover from Richard's (Colourmart) merino/mohair (80/20). Almost, because I got into trouble with the ribbing. I left the ribbings for last for there was so little time left that I could not be sure to finish all, so I wanted to get the garter stitch part done at least. Then I could do the edge ribbings with my own machine. Well, I had time to start on the ribbings at the class anyway. And things seemed to go splendidly right until it was time to take the piece out of the machine. Then the truth was revealed - not so splendidly after all. For the ribbing was full of holes. The yarn was cut on several places. It was apparently not strong enough for ribbing. Alas, I had to dig out the tiny needles and start knitting the ribbing by hand. And that is what I've been doing. Suitably brainless, that. I've almost finished except for the neck. I don't yet know what kind of neck ribbing I'll do, but I'll figure it out.

Muistatteko vielä tämän päivityksen rannekorun? Se on ollut ahkerasti käytössä ja vaijeri oli sitten napsahtanut poikki. Toin korun kotiin korjattavaksi ja samalla huomasin että jadekivet olivat kuluneet jo aika himmeiksi eivätkä näyttäneet enää kovin kauniilta. Vaihdoin sitten kivet hematiittiin, se kun tuntuu kestävän ystäväni käytössä paljon paremmin, rannekoruna siis. Sieviä nuo isot hematiittihelmet ovatkin, eipä silti. Tarkoitus oli tehdä itsellekin jotain kevätkorua, mutta huomasin korutarvikevarastoissani puutteita eli koruilu ei kauheasti onnistu ennenkuin tilaan hieman tarvikkeita. Tai no, saan tehtyä kyllä muuta mutta en vaijerikoruja. Ja eikun tilaamaan vaan.

Do you still remember the bracelet from this update? It has seen a lot of use and the wire had snapped. I took it home for repair and I noticed that the green jade beads were not so pretty anymore, they had gone a bit dull and worn. So I replaced them with hematite beads, for they seem to withstand the use much better. And very pretty they are, those large hematite beads. I had meant to make something for myself too, but I noticed that I lacked some key ingredients, namely crimp beads. I cannot make wire jewellery without them so I must order some more. In the mean time I could perhaps make something else. We'll see.

Kuvankaunista - Picture Perfect

Torstai-illan, lauantai- ja sunnuntaipäivien aikana on kuvaajan kanssa tullut kahlattua läpi noin viitisentuhatta valokuvaa. Yhteensä niitä taisi olla jopa yli kuusituhatta, mutta en ihan kaikkien valikoimisessa ollut mukana. Tästä hämmästyttävästä määrästä karsimme kuvia alle kymmenesosaan, taisi niitä noin parisataa tulla valittua. Se, kuinka monta niistä sitten loppujenlopuksi päätyy kuvaan nähdään myöhemmin.

During Thursday night, Saturday and Sunday I and the photographer looked through about five thousand photos. All together there was more than six thousand photos, but I did not go through all of them. And from this amazing amount we chose less than one tenth. I think we chose about two hundred photos. But how many of those actually end up in the book will be seen later.

Aineisto lähtee kustantajalle ihan näinä päivinä. Eli blogikin pääsee vähitellen normaaliin päiväjärjestykseen. Lähempänä julkaisua tulette todennäköisesti näkemään jotain kuvia tulevasta materiaalista. Nyt tuntuu siltä että tästä lähtien neulon vain ainaoikeaa ja suoria kappaleita. Vaikeinta minulle nimittäin oli keksiä nimityksiä ja selityksiä erilaisille osille ja kappaleille. Vaikka sitä kuinka kuvittelee tekevänsä yksinkertaista ja helppoa todellisuus iskee silmille puhtaaksikirjoitusvaiheessa. 

Mutta, nyt voisin vähän aikaa vaikka laiskotella ja ehkä lukea pari kirjaakin. Taannoin Hulluilta Päiviltä ostetut kirjat odottavat vielä vuoroaan.

The material is going to the publisher in the coming days. So the blog will finally get to normal order too. Closer to the publishing date you'll probably see some teasers of the upcoming material. But now I just feel that from now on I'll just kit rectangular pieces made of garter stitch. Because for me the hardest bit was thinking of how to name and describe various parts and shapes. No matter how much I think I'm making too simple and easy things the reality bites when trying to write the pattern down properly. 

But, now I think I will take it easy for a few days and maybe read a book or two. The ones I bought from the bi-annual special sale of one of the big department stores still wait their turn.

Pääasioita - Head things

Viimeaikaisen blogihiljaisuuden syynä ei suinkaan ole ollut laiskuus ja neulomattomuus, neulottua on tullut enemmänkin kuin tarpeeksi. Syynä sen sijaan on tämä: pdf (sivu 28).

Aineiston kanssa pitää rutistaa vielä pari viikkoa, sitten helpottaa vähäksi aikaa.

The reason why my blog has been so quiet lately is not just because of lazyness and no knitting. There has been knitting, plenty of it. The real reason is this: pdf (page 28) (in Finnish now only, sorry).

The material keeps me busy for a couple of weeks more, then it is more peaceful for a while.

Pupuhuivi nro 2 - Bunny Scarf Number 2

Pupuhuivi nro kaksi valmistui perjantaina. Pieni kolmiohuivi, ei mikään suurensuuri, mutta juuri sopiva takin alle. Ainaoikeinneuletta ja reikärivi kärkeen, nirkkopäättely. Ohjeena on Mousseux, mutta omaani tein hieman enemmän silmukoita ennen reunapitsiä.

Bunny scarf number 2 was finished on Friday. A smallish triangular scarf, just big enough to wear under jacket. Mostly garter stitch with a little lace on the edge and picot bind-off. The pattern is Mousseux, but I had a bit more stitches on mine before I started the lace edge.

Jouduin purkamaan muutaman kerran, sillä nirkkoreunus vei yllättävän paljon lankaa. Nyt jäi jäljelle pieni nöttönen, josta ehkä olisin saanut vielä kerroksen verran ainaoikeaa, mutta ainakin lanka riitti.

Lankana Orkney Angoran St. Magnus, kaksi kerää, villaa ja angoraa, puolet ja puolet. Puikot 4.5 mm. Lanka karvasi neuloessa jonkin verran mutta ei ihan niin paljon kuin edellinen pupulanka, eli oli siis miellyttävämpää neuloa. Mutta luulen että en nyt ihan heti aloita uutta angoraneuletta.

I had to rip back a few times since the picot edging took up a surprising amount of yarn. Now I have a small ball of yarn left, enough maybe for a row of garter. But, at least I did not run out of yarn in the middle of the bind-off.

The yarn used is Orkney Angora St. Magnus, 2 balls, wool and angora, half and half. 4.5 mm needles. The yarn shed a bit while knitting but not as much as the bunny lace so I liked knitting this one more. But still, I think I'm done with angora for now.

Lauantaina pääsin vihdoin poikkeamaan Nappitalossa. Neulekonekurssilla neuloskelemani pieni neuletakki sai viime maanantaina toisen puolen nappilistasta paikalleen ja oli aika mietiskellä nappeja. Koska lanka on aika tumma, lilan/mustan sekoitus niin en edes yrittänytkään löytää langan värisiä nappeja. Monen mukavan joukosta valinta päätyi näihin metallinappeihin, lähinnä siksi että ne ovat aika yksinkertaisia mutta kuitenkin niissä on sitä jotain ja lisäksi niitä oli kahdessa koossa. Isommat tulevat eteen kiinnitykseksi ja pienet tulevat koristeiksi hihojen pitkään joustinneuleeseen halkioon. Halkiosta tulee tosin valesellainen ja napit päätyvät vain koristeeksi.

On Saturday I finally made it to Nappitalo, a small button and haberdashery shop in the city. I've been knitting a small cardi at machine knitting class and last Monday I got the second and last button band in place so it was time to think about buttons. Since the yarn is a funny purple/black or eggplant mix I didn't even think about matching buttons. Amongst many choices I picked these metal buttons. Mainly because they are quite simple but still there's that little something in them and because they had them in two sizes. The larger ones will go to the button band and the smaller ones go to sleeves as decoration.

Löytöpurkista poimin mukaani hieman isomman metallinapin. Sitten huomasimme art deco-tyyliset napit tiskin takana ja mukaan lähti kolme sinisävyistä kaunotarta. Nyt tarvitsee tehdä vain se neule mihin nämä napit tulevat. Helppoa, eikö?

From the odds and ends-jar on the counter I found a bit bigger metal button. Then we noticed the art deco-style buttons behind the counter and I came home with three blue beauties. Now I just have to make the knit to use these buttons on. Easy, no?

Pupuhuivi - Bunny Scarf

Sivutyöhuivi valmistui vihdoin viimein. Tein tätä jo viime syksynä retriitissä, sitten unohdin huivin vähäksi aikaa ja tuossa joulun jälkeen muistin että talvi on vielä meneillään ja huiville olisi käyttöä. Siksipä pakotin itseni neulomaan sen loppuun. Pakotusta vaati tylsä mallikerta - tosin tylsistä tulee mielestäni ne parhaimmat lopputulokset - ja inhottava lanka. Inhottava siksi että siitä lähti irti pieniä haituvia jotka tuntuivat kulkeutuvan aina kasvoille ja nenään ja kutittivat.

Lankaa oli muuten aika mukava neuloa, mutta ei olisi kannattanut neuloa kerän sisältä, sillä kun huomasin tarkastella kerää niin sen ulkopuoli oli jo hienoisesti huopunut. Kerä oli viettänyt aikaansa yhdessä neulepussissa joten hirveästi liikettä ja möyhentämistä ei ollut tapahtunut - kannattaa siis kiinnittää huomiota asiaan jos neuloo angoralangasta. Värit olivat myös aika...mielenkiintoiset, mutta tulihan tuosta pirteä huivi seitsemänvuotiaalle.

Mallikerta löytyy Valley Yarnsin Herringbone Scarf-ohjeesta, itse loin vain hieman enemmän silmukoita ja käytin isompia puikkoja. 3.5 mm:n puikkoja, niillä tunnun neulovan nykyään hieman kaiken. Huivista tuli noin puolitoistametrinen ja leveyttä joku 25-30 senttiä enkä pingoittanut sitä mitenkään. Lanka oli Lai-lai-lai Yarnzin Bunny Lace-lankaa (400 m / 50 g) ja värin nimi on Original Sin ja käytin sen kaikki.

My knit meet scarf is finally finished. Actually it has been so for a few weeks now but I forgot to blog about it. But, I started this last autumn already and forgot it at some point. A bit after christmas I remembered it again and decided that I had to get it done while there was still winter. People don't have much need for angora scarves during summer. So, I forced my self to knit a bit each day to get it done. Why I had to force myself was because the pattern was a bit dull - though it seems like the dull ones produce the best results - and because the yarn was a bit horrible. Horrible because it shed fine small hairs that ended up in my face and nose and tickled.

Other than the shedding the yarn was actually quite nice to knit. But it was not a very good idea to knit it from the inside of the ball, for at some point I noticed that the yarn had almost felted together on the outside. The yarn had spent its time in a small knitting bag and had not seen that much movement so if you ever knit with angora yarn it's something that has to be taken into account. The colours are also a bit...interesting, but it made a bright scarf for a seven-year-old.

The pattern I used is from a Valley Yarns pattern, the Herringbone Scarf. Though I cast on more stitches and used bigger needles to make the scarf a bit more airy. I used 3.5 mm needles as I seem to do mostly these days. The scarf is about 1.5 meters long and about 25-30 cm wide and I did not block it in any way. Yarn is Lai-lai-lai Yarnz Bunny Lace (50 g / 400 m) in colourway Original Sin and I used all of it.

Once I got rid of the itchy yarn what did I do next? Well, start another scarf from angora yarn naturally, this time it is a mix though.

No jopas! - Well, I'll be

- No mikäpä se siinä pilkottaa?
- Kantapäähän se. Eikä ole edes se karheampi oikean jalan kantapää vaan se sileämpi vasemman jalan.
- Ärsyttääkö?
- No arvaa. Ne ovat karkkisukat. Olen käyttänyt sukkia nyt tässä viime aikoina enkä ole edes varma olenko pessyt niitä vielä kertaakaan.
- Mitäs meinaat nyt tehdä?
- Kai se on pakko kaivaa langanjämät jostain ja ruveta parsimistöihin. Toisen sukan kantapää näyttää myös hieman ohuelta. Se siitä, pehmeästä merinosukkalangasta.

- So what's that there then?
- It's a heel, that's what it is. And it's not even the rougher right foot heel it's the smoother left foot one.
- Are you miffed?
- Well, yes I am. They're Candy socks and I haven't even worn them that much. I started using them this winter (indoors only) and I'm not even sure I've washed them yet.
- So what are you going to do now?
- Sigh...I guess I have to dig out the rest of the yarn from somewhere and start darning. The heel of the other sock looks a bit thin too. That's that, soft merino sock yarn.

Jotain punaista - Something Red

Sain vihdoinkin valmiiksi syksyn neulekonekurssilla ystävälleni Eijalle tekemäni neuletakin. Palasethan ovat olleet valmiina jo tovin, mutta tein reunuksen käsin ja se kesti. Simppeli malli tuo, etu- ja takakappaleet ihan suoraa pötköä, istutetuilla hihoilla tosin. Etukappaleet ovat leveät joten laskeutuvat kauniisti. Reunoja kiertää muutaman sentin ainaoikeinreunus.

I finally finished a machine knit cardi I made for my friend Eija at the class last autumn. The pieces I finished a while ago, but as usual the finishing took time. Very simple design, straight pieces but with set-in sleeves. The front pieces are wide so they drape nicely. There's hand-knitted garter stitch on all the edges and that is what took time.

Kätevää on myös se, että sitä voi pitää monella tapaa. Hieman rintaneulaa olkapäälle ja ulkonäkö muuttuu ihan erilaiseksi. Huomasimme myös että "toinen puoli kiinni olalta, toinen auki"-tyyli näyttää myös hyvältä mutta siitä ei valitettavasti tullut otettua kuvaa.

It's also handy that you can wear it with different ways. A bit of a brooch on the shoulder and la, it looks totally different. We also noticed that "one side pinned up, on side hanging down"- style looks nice also but unfortunately I don't have a photo of that.

Lanka on Marjutilta joskus neulekoneen hankkimisaikoina ostettua kartiolankaa. Se on Texeren lankaa, ehkä Fiestaa tai sitten ei - siis eihän kartioon toki kannata nimeä painaa, ei. Mutta villaa se on kuitenkin. Langassa vaihtelevat tiukkakierteiset ja todella löyhäkierteiset osiot joten pinnasta tuli elävä mutta lanka soljui kuitenkin koneella mukavasti.

Lankaa kului kuitenkin ihan kivasti, minulla oli sitä neljä n. 230 g kartiota ja jäljellä on noin 75 grammaa. Kun oletamme että kartio painaa noin 40 g (eihän minulla ole tietenkään niitä enää jäljellä punnittavaksi) saamme takin painoksi noin 685 grammaa.

Yarn is from Marjut, bought around when I got my machine. It is from Texere yarns, maybe Fiesta, maybe not - wouldn't do to put proper labels on the cones, oh no. But it is 100% wool in any case. The yarn is quite variable, there's tightly spun sections and very loosely spun sections resulting in a very nice-looking texture and still the yarn was easy to knit with the machine.

The cardi used up most of my yarn, which was nice. I had four cones of about 230 g each and now I'm left with about 75 grams of yarn. If we assume that the cardboard cone weighs about 40 grams (of course I don't have them anymore to weigh) we end up with the cardi weighin about 685 grams.

Uusi vuosi, uudet kujeet - New Year, New Tricks

Edellinen postauksen idea ei ollut pelkästään tuhmat laulunsanat - vaikka siltä ehkä vaikutti - vaan esittelin valmiita neulomuksiani. Vietimme viikonloppua vanhempieni luona Kotkassa, ja siellä neuloin hieman "tilausneuleita".

Pari siiliä valmistuivat ohjeella joka on ollut joskus ilmeisesti lähiaikoina Kotiliesi-lehdessä. Itse sain vain valokopioidun ohjeen ja toiveen tehdä moinen. Teinkin niitä sitten kaksi ja toinen päätyi kummilleni (joka sen ohjeen taisi löytääkin). Ohjeesta sen verran että se oli huono, todella huono. Ensinnäkään siinä ei sanottu millä langalla aloitetaan, se selvisi vasta puolivälissä ohjetta kun käskettiin katkaista mohairlanka ja jatkaa toisella. Ja muutenkin se oli aika surkea, joten ei siitä sen enempää. Onneksi olen suhteellisen kokenut neuloja.

Siilit on siis neulottu, selkäosa jotain vanhaa Novitan mohairia kaksinkertaisena, kuono ja jalat lampaanvillaa, merkitöntä itsekasvatettua, molemmat ystävältä saatua. Silmät ja kuonot mustia muovihelmiä. Harjasin selkäpuolta vielä hieman mohairharjalla jotta siitä tuli kunnolla pörröinen. Sieviä palleroita niistä tuli.

The idea of the previous post was not just to display some rude lyrics - even though it might have felt like it - but to display some of my finished knits. Hubby and I spent last weekend at my parent's in Kotka and I did some "requested" knits.

The two hedgehogs I made from a pattern that apparently was in a Finnish home style magazine a while back. I just got sent a photocopied pattern and a wish for a hedgehog. I ended up making two and gave the one to my godmother (she spied the pattern in the first place). As for the pattern - the worst I've come across. For one it just tells you to use two yarns but does not even tell which one you should start with until just at the half point where it tells you to cut the mohair and continue with the other yarn. And it was all in all pretty miserable so enough about that. Good thing I'm a quite experienced knitter, is all I'm going to say.

But, the hedhehogs are knitted using a bit of black mohair doubled, some old Novita yarn, and a bit of brown home-grown sheep yarn, both of which I got from a friend of mine. Eyes and nose are black plastic pearls. I brushed the back with a mohair brush a bit to make it properly fluffy. Pretty cute things, they are.

Ja sitten viimeisimpään villitykseen, eli hörhelöhuiveihin. Onhan noita tullut pari aiemminkin tehtyä, OnLinen Solo-langasta. Tämä on Schachenmayrin Argentina-lankaa, isoa verkkoa jossa on tuollainen pallukkareuna. Ja aitoa 100% akryyliä. Tein noin seitsemän "silmukkaa" ja käytin 5 mm puikkoja. Sopii hyvin jalkalampulle, mutta ei näyttänyt pahalta äidinkään kaulassa.

And then on to the latest big thing - frilly scarves. I've done a couple of those before too, out of Online Solo. This one is Argentina from Schachenmayr. Net-like structure with a kind of bumpy edge. And genuine 100% acrylic. I used about 7 "stitches" and 5 mm needles. Fits the floor lamp quite nicely but does not look half bad on my Mom either.
