No jopas! - Well, I'll be

- No mikäpä se siinä pilkottaa?
- Kantapäähän se. Eikä ole edes se karheampi oikean jalan kantapää vaan se sileämpi vasemman jalan.
- Ärsyttääkö?
- No arvaa. Ne ovat karkkisukat. Olen käyttänyt sukkia nyt tässä viime aikoina enkä ole edes varma olenko pessyt niitä vielä kertaakaan.
- Mitäs meinaat nyt tehdä?
- Kai se on pakko kaivaa langanjämät jostain ja ruveta parsimistöihin. Toisen sukan kantapää näyttää myös hieman ohuelta. Se siitä, pehmeästä merinosukkalangasta.

- So what's that there then?
- It's a heel, that's what it is. And it's not even the rougher right foot heel it's the smoother left foot one.
- Are you miffed?
- Well, yes I am. They're Candy socks and I haven't even worn them that much. I started using them this winter (indoors only) and I'm not even sure I've washed them yet.
- So what are you going to do now?
- Sigh...I guess I have to dig out the rest of the yarn from somewhere and start darning. The heel of the other sock looks a bit thin too. That's that, soft merino sock yarn.

Sukka sinne, toinen tänne - Sock Here, There, Everywhere

Hieman päivänpaistetta sateen keskelle, sain nimittäin keltaiset sukat valmiiksi. Tai no, melkein ainakin. Tässä ne nyt epäparina komeilevat, toinen sukka nypyllä ja toinen napilla. Ja kuten näkyy niin nappi ei ole oikein kiinni vielä. Mietin laitanko siihen tuon pienemmän vai hieman isomman helmiäisnapin.

A little bit of sunshine in the middle of all this rain for I finished my yellow socks. Well, almost. Here they are, unmatched as they now are, one with the nupp in the middle and the other one without. I'm thinking of putting a button in the middle of the diamond and here it is still unsewn for I'm pondering whether to choose this one or a one slightly larger, mother-of-pearl both.

Kärjestä aloitettaessa on minulla aina hankalaa saada kantapäätä kohdalleen, ja niinpä se ei näissäkään oikein oikeassa paikassa ole, eli sukat ovat hieman liian lyhyet jalkaan. Saakohan näistä sittenkin äiti sukat...hän kun oli ensimmäistä esitellessäni kovin huolissaan että en kai meinaa purkaa sitä, hänelle kelpaisi kyllä.

When starting at the toes I have a problem getting the heel to be where it should be. And as you can see I did not do a very good job with this one either, for the sock is a bit too short. I wonder if end up giving these to my Mom after all...for when I showed the first one she was very worried that I shouldn't rip it that she'd take them if I didn't like them.

Puuhastelua - A Little Bit of This and That

Täällä on vähän puuhasteltu kaikenlaista viimeaikoina. Kaivoin esille neulepaidan jonka osat tein neulekonekurssilla joskus ikuisuus sitten - en löytänyt aiheesta blogausta, mutta luulisin että se oli joskus -08. Onpa tuota kasaankin ommeltu, mutta viimeistely on jäänyt kesken. Mallineule on sellaista että nurja pinta on se oikea puoli, joten tuo vääntää rullalle väärään suuntaan. Tein sitten kaitaletta mutta se ei oikein tahtonut istua hyvin kaulukseen joten tuo on jäänyt sivuun odottamaan inspiraatiota. Kaivoin sen nyt esille kun syksykin on taas tulossa ja kohtahan sitä voisi jo pitää 3/4-hihaista kashmirpaitaa. Purin aloituskerroksen ja poimin siitä silmukat puikoille ja neuloin sileää jokusen kerroksen. Nyt tuo kiertyy oikeaan suuntaan. Teen samaa myös hihansuihin, mutta kaulus on vielä mietinnän alla.

I've done a little bit of this and that lately. I dug out and old ufo that I made a while ago at the machine knitting class. All the parts are done and I've sewn almost all together but I had some difficulties with the edges. The pattern is such that the wrong side is the right side so the edges roll to the wrong side. I made some strips for the edges but that didn't work so well with the collar so I abandoned that - and the whole knit for a while. Now that the autumn is coming I dug it out again since it's won't take so long before a 3/4-sleeve cashmere sweater is just the thing. So, I ripped the cast-on edge and picked up the stitches on 2 mm needles and knit some rows of stockinette to make it curl on the right side. I will do the same with sleeves but I'm still not sure what to do with the collar.

Olen myös neuloskellut paria keltaiselle sukalle - ja kirjoitellut ohjetta siinä ohessa. Tästä toisesta jätin keskinypyn pois ja mietin helmiäisnappia. Jotain pientä se tuntuisi siihen kaipaavan.

I've also knitted a pair for the yellow sock. I left out the nupp on this one and I'm thinking of replacing it with a mother of pearl button. I still feel it needs something on the center of the diamond.

Viimeisenä harjoittelukappale. Ystävän rannekorut ovat kovan käytön alaisia ja yhden vaijeri petti taas. Tein hieman hopealanganpyörittelyharjoituksia ja tällainen siitä sitten tuli. Ei mikään täydellinen yksilö mutta ihan kelvollinen. Tuo lanka oli sen verran paksua että sitä oli jo hieman vaikeaa kieputella. Hopeaa ja hematiittia siis. Sain loppuhelmet itselleni että voisin vaikka tehdä oman, sen verran sievä tuosta tuli.

Last a practice piece. A friend's bracelets get a lot of use and one gave up the ghost. The wire snapped. So, I practiced wire-wrapping since I haven't done it much and this is what I came up with. It's not perfect but passable and at least this won't break easily. The wire I used was quite thick so twisting it took some work, and tools. It's silver and hematites. I got the beads that were left over and I think I might make one for myself too, for it turned out quite pretty.

Niinanpääsukka - From the top of my head

Täällä on podettu kesäflunssaa. Ja koska en voinut neuloa mitään keskeneräisistäni, se olisi vaatinut rymistelyä lankavarastoissa koska en muistanut minne tungin loput huivilangat, niin aloitin aivotonta sukkaa.

Langaksi valikoitui ei-todellakaan-minun -värinen Lai-lai-lai Yarnzin Bad Things-klubissa tullut merino-kashmir-nailon -sukkalanka ja 3 mm puikot.

I've had a bit of a summer flu. And since I couldn't knit any of the things on the needles for I would have had to rummage through my stash for I have no idea where I put the rest of the scarf yarns, I started on a sock.

I used a yarn I had on hand, a so-not-my-colour I got from Lai-lai-lai Yarnz Bad Things club. It's a merino-cashmere-nylon mix and I used 3 mm needles.

Neuloskelin lähinnä mitä päähän juolahti, mutta oli minulla sentään jonkinlainen kantava ajatus. Käytän sukkia pääasiassa sisätiloissa, kotona tai kylässä, jalkojen lämmikkeenä. Useimmiten jalassa on housut joten sukasta näkyy lähinnä jalkaosa. Monien sukkien kaunis varsiosa menee siis hiukan hukkaan. Halusinkin tehdä jotain jalkapöytään ja tällainen siitä sitten tuli.

Sukka on aloitettu kärjestä ja se on muotoiltu, eli kumpaankin jalkaan on omansa. Keskitin kuvion kärjen sileän osan keskelle, joten se ei siis ole ihan keskellä jalkapöytää. Näin jälkikäteen mietittynä en edelleenkään osaa sanoa olisiko sen pitänyt olla keskellä vai ei.

I knitted whatever came to my head though I did have a bit of an idea. For I use socks mainly indoors, either at home or when visiting, to keep my toes warm. Quite often I wear them with trousers so the lovely cuffs many socks have are completely wasted for I can't see them. I wanted to make something that is visible with trousers too so this is what I came up with.

The sock is knitted toe-up and it is fitted, meaning there's a left sock and a right sock, this being the left. I centered the pattern on the flat portion of the toes so it is not in the middle of the top of the sock. And now, after completing, I still can't say whether that was the right thing to do or not.

The toe pattern continues as a 2x2 rib growing along the sock so that a bit after the heel the cuff is all rib.

Puhun yksikössä koska valmiina on vasta yksi sukka. En ole vielä edes katkaissut lankaa koska en oikein osaa päättää onko tämä mörvelö vai ei. Neulonko siis vielä toisen sukan vai puranko tämän ja teen jotain muuta?

I'm speaking of a sock for that is all that I've done so far. I haven't even cut the yarn yet because I can't decide if this is a keeper or not. So, should I knit another sock or rip this horrible thing and do something else?

Rhombus 2

Toinen pari Rhombus-sukkia valmiina. Aloittelin näitä kevään retriitissä enkä ole näitä mitenkään ahkerasti tehnyt, kun tarkoitus oli saada nämä joskus syksyksi valmiiksi, äidillä kun ei ole käyttöä sukille kesällä. Nelisen kuukautta satunnaista miittineulomista ja kah, nyt ne ovat valmiit.

Näissä käytin lankana myös Wollmeisea, mutta 100% merinon sijaan twiniä (turkoosi sukka on twiniä, Türkis ja vihreä merinoa, Zarte Knospe). Valitsin twinin koska siinä on keinokuitua vahvisteena ja se kestää paremmin käyttöä. Äitini kun omistaa huomattavasti vähemmän villasukkia kuin minä ja ne vähät sukat saavatkin enemmän käyttöä.

Twin ja merino Wollmeiset ovat koostumuksen lisäksi myös hieman eri paksuisia, 100% merino on sitä itseään, superwash merinoa, siinä on 526m 150g kerässä, twinissä on 80% merinoa ja 20% nailonia ja 466m 150 g kerässä. Eroa on siis 60m kerässä.


A second pair of Rhombus socks is finished. I started these on the spring knitting retreat and I haven't been that active in knitting them so it took me about four months to finish. The aim was to get them done by autumn, since my Mom does not have that much need for wool socks in the summer. But see, now they are done.

For this pair I used a different yarn, Wollmeise twin instead of 100% merino (the turquoise sock is twin, Türkis and the green one is merino, Zarte Knospe). I chose twin because it has nylon for better strength for my Mom has fewer socks than I do so the ones she has get more wear.

Twin and merino Wollmeises have not just different composition but also different thickness. 100% merino is just that, superwash merino with 526m on 150 g skein. The twin has 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon with 466m on 150g skein. So the difference is 60m.

Seurasin ohjetta ja neuloin 2mm puikoilla nämäkin sukat. Alku on hieman erilainen, 202n-joustinneuleen sijasta tein 2o3n-joustinneuletta ja jatkoin joustinta aina siihen asti kunnes vastaan tuli ensimmäiset silmukankierrot. Aloituksesta tuli mielestäni aika kiva.

Paksuusero näkyy aika hyvin varren pituudessa - ohjeen mukaan tehtynä (joustin on senttimäärältään sama kummassakin) varresta tuli hieman pidempi

I followed the pattern and used 2 mm needles. The difference in thickness can be seen in the cuffs. The ribbing part is the same cm length in both, but the cuff on the blue sock is a bit longer than on the green.

Sinisen sukan varsi on myös hieman leveämpi kuin vihreän. Jalkaosassa ero ei ole niin huomattava, koska pohja on sileää neuletta. Pituus on myös molemmissa suunnilleen sama, mutta sinisessä on puolikas mallikerta vähemmän.

The cuff on the blue sock is also a bit wider than on the green. The difference is not so noticeable on the foot part for the bottom is stockinette stitch. Also the length of the foot part is about the same on both, but the blue has half a pattern less than the green.

Vaihtamalla lanka paksummaksi saa hieman väljemmän sukan. Oma jalkani on aika rintava, joten sininen sukka on hieman helpompi vetää jalkaan, koska se on väljempi tuosta kantapään kohdalta.

Sininen sukka on hieman hillitympi, koska käytin siinä pienempiä helmiä kuin vihreässä. Ja jos taannoinen anonyymikommentoija sattuu lukemaan, niin ei helmet sukassa mitenkään omituista ole eivätkä ne välttämättä mitenkään häiritse kengässäkään jos ei käytä kovin isoja sukkia. Eikä niitä tietenkään kannata jalkapohjan puolelle tai kantapäähän laittaa. Omat sukkani eivät ole tarkoitettu kenkäsukiksi ollenkaan, vaan ihan kotihipsutteluun, niin helmet tuovat hieman luksusta arkipäivään.

So if you change the pattern yarn to thicker one, you get a bit looser sock. My feet are quite wide around the heel-top part (is it called high instep?) so the blue one is a bit easier to pull on.

The blue sock is a bit more understated than the green one for I used darker and smaller beads on it. And if the anonymous commentor is reading - the one that was dubious about the wisdom of putting beads on socks - it's not that strange. Just choose small enough beads if you want to wear your socks with shoes so that they don't bother you - and of course do not put any beads on the bottom or on the heel. I'm not planning on wearing my socks with shoes so that is why I chose beads with a bit more bling on them. Something to brighten the day when at home.

The Salmon of Sock

Kuvittelin että olisin voinut esitellä tänään jo valmiin värjätyn puseron. Kaulus osoittautui kuitenkin oletettua hankalammaksi, tässä on menossa jo kolmas versio. Ensimmäiseen poimin silmukoita hieman liian vähän, toiseen liikaa. Toivottavasti tämä kolmas versio on sopiva.

I thought I could have showed you the finished and dyed sweater from last post but as it turned out I can't. The neck edging turned out to be trickier than I anticipated for this is the third version. For the first I picked up too few stitches, for the second too many. Hopefully this third one will be just right.

Sainpa tässä tehtyä vihdoin viimein valmiiksi sukat jotka aloitin jo vuonna 2008. Olin arveluideni kanssa oikeassa ja sukan kantapäästä tuli hieman liian pieni. Purin tekeleen ja aloitin uudestaan, hieman suuremmalla silmukkaluvulla ja puikkokoolla. Miksi vaihdoin puikot, sitä en enää muista, todennäköisesti nuo nyt sattuivat vain osumaan käsiin kun rupesin uudelleenneulontaan. Ja juu, on niitä kaksi mutta tiputin toiselle paistettua lohta ja se joutui hieman puhdistukseen. Ja ei, eivät olleet edes jalassa tuolloin.

I finally managed to finish a pair of socks I started on 2008. I gave into my unsureness and decided to rip the almost finished sock and start again with a bit larger stitch count. Also I chose a bit larger needles though I'm really not sure why I did that. Probably they just were on hand. And yes, there is another one too but unfortunately I dropped a piece of fried salmon on it and I had to clean it a bit. And no, I was not even wearing them at the time.

Käsitöitä - Handicrafts

Käsityöt ovat olleet kovin sukkapitoisia viimeaikoina. Ensimmäinen Rhombus-sukka on edennyt jo kantapäähän. Käytössä ovat neliskulmaiset sukkapuikot. Ostin ensimmäisen parin sellaisia jo jokin aika sitten, mutta ne ovat lyhyttä mallia ja sukan neulominen ohuesta langasta niillä on hieman haastavaa kun puikot meinaavat loppua kesken. Siksi ostin parit 18 cm puikkoja ja ne ovat aika sopivia sukkaneulontaan. En ole huomannut kyllä mitään eroa käsialassa pyöreillä tai neliskulmaisilla, mutta minulla on aika tasainen sukkakäsiala muutenkin.

My knittings have been quite sock-based lately. The first Rhombus sock is beyond the heel turn already. I'm knittig these with square needles from Kollage. I got my first pair of square needles a while back from New York but they are a bit too short to use with thin sock yarn. So I got a few 18 cm ones and they're much better length. I can't say that I notice any difference in how my knitting looks depending on whether I use square or round dpn's for I knit quite evenly with both.

Toiset sukat ovat hieman värikkäämmästä langasta. Kyseessä on Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled-lanka jota sain pari vyyhtiä sukkavaihdossa muinoin. Väri on aika...värikäs. Värin nimi on Aztec, mutta itsellä väristä tulee ennemmin mieleen räjähdys karkkikaupassa kuin intiaanikansa. Mutta ihan pirteää se kuitenkin on.

Ensimmäinen sukka on jo valmis ja toinen jäi tähän. Lanka loppui ja pitäisi paikallistaa se toinen vyyhti. En ole kuitenkaan jaksanut kaivella joten siirryin tekemään toista sukkaa. Onneksi on useampi projekti tekeillä samaan aikaan.

The other pair I have on the needles is of a bit more colourful yarn. The yarn in question is from Spunky Eclectic and is called Spunky Speckled. The colour is called Azted although when I look at it I think more about an explosion in a candy store than about an indian tribe. But, it sure is cheerful.

The first sock is finished and the second stopped here. For I ran out of yarn and have to locate the other skein. However, I have no idea where I put it and haven't been bothered to look yet. So I just knitted the other pair. It's good to have many ongoing projects.

Olen väkerrellyt hieman muutakin. Päätin nimittäin kokeilla helmien solmintaa silkkilangan kanssa. Aika nopeasti syntyi pitkä kaulanauha 10 mm kokoisista lapis lazuli-helmistä. Helminauhan päättely ei vaan näytä kovin kauniilta joten siitä ei kuvaa. Silkin päät jäivät hieman hapsottamaan kun minulla ei ollut sopivaa liimaa ja käytin päätössolmuihin kynsilakkaa, joka ei nyt niin hyvin näyttänyt toimivan. En nyt muutenkaan ole mitenkään hirveän ihastunut lopputulokseen vaikka se muuten onkin ihan siisti. Lähinnä tässä tökkii pituus - sain aikaiseksi n. 122 cm pitkän nauhan ja hieman pidempi voisi olla kivempi. Helmiä ei kuitenkaan ole enää joten pitää hieman tuumailla mitä tässä nyt tekisi. Eli katsellako tuota tuollaisena vai puranko tekeleen ja pyörittelen ketjua hopealangan avulla. Silloin siitä ainakin saisi tehtyä pidemmän. Pitääpä mietiskellä.

Mutta käytin tässä 2 langan tekniikkaa ja 0.7 mm helmisilkkiä. Helmien reiät olivat hieman suurenpuoleisia, joten kokoa suurempi silkki olisi toiminut ehkä hieman paremmin.

I've done something else too. For I wanted to try pearl knotting. So I chose these 10 mm big lapis lazuli stone beads and made this long necklace. As it was my first try my end knots do not look that nice - so no closeup of those. I did not have any suitable glue at had so I used clear nailpoish. It did not work too well and the ends of the silk show a bit. Other than that it looks quite good but I'm somehow still not very pleased with it. I think it's because of the length. I got about 122 cm long necklace with the beads I had and I think I'd prefer a bit longer. So now I'm pondering what to do with it. Maybe I should take it apart and try making another using silver wire and wrapped links. That way I could make it a bit longer.

But, I used two-thread method here and used 0.7 mm thick silk thread. The holes on the beads were a bit on the large side so I think size thicker might have worked a bit better.

Muukalaisia ulkoavaruudesta - Aliens from outer space

Joulu meni ja sain jouluneulontanikin melkein valmiiksi. Vain hieman päättelyä vailla olevat sukat päätyivät pakettiin aattoaamuna. Päättelykin tuli tehtyä siinä sivussa jouluruokia mussutellessa ja valmiiksi tulivat. Ai mitkä siis? No bmp-sukat, Knittystä.


Christmas came and went and I almost finished my xmas knitting. I finally packaged the socks on the morning of 24th just missing some end weaving. Which I did, eventually, after we had exhanged the gifts. Now they are all finished. What, you might ask - well, bmp from Knitty of course.

Itse tein hieman uudempaa designia, taitaa olla joku deluxe-versio , väreillä siis. Lähinnä siksi että kotona ei ollut vihreää saati sitten valkoista sukkalankaa ja muutenkin pirteämpi viehätti enemmän. Pohjalankana on Schoeller+Stahlin Fortissima Socka mustana, väreinä on kolmea sävyä Wollmeisea, 100% ja twiniä (Küken, Wasabi ja Türkis), vaaleanvihreää Anttilan Coralloa, lilaa Malabrigo Sockia, purppuraa Opalia ja punaista Lana Grossan silkki-kashmirsukkalankaa. Sukkalankavarastoni näyttää siis olevan laaja ja monipuolinen.

I made a bit newer version of the game, a deluxe-version, with colours. Mainly because I had neither white or forest green sock yarn at home but also because I wanted to use more colours and make the socks a bit more cheerful. The base yarn is Schoeller+Stahl Fortissima Sock in black and the other colours used were three colourways of Wollmeise, both 100% and twin (Küken, Wasabi and Türkis), pale green Anttila Corallo, lilac Malabrigo Sock, purple Opal and red Lana Grossa silk/cashmere sock yarn. Yes, I do seem to have an extensive sock yarn stash.

En myöskään ottanut ohjeesta oikeastaan muuta kuin varren silmukkalun ja kuviot. Yritin seurata ohjetta pidemmälle mutta en pitänyt varren kuvioiden jälkeisistä kavennuksista. Ne saivat aikaan outoa pussitusta varteen ja jätinkin ne tekemättä. Jatkoin suoraan samalla silmukkamäärällä kuin varressa ja tein normaalin ranskalaisen kantapään vahvistetulla kantalapulla. Kavensin hieman enemmän silmukoita pois kiilakavennuksissa ja se tuntuikin toimivan hyvin. Kärjen tein normaalisti kaventamalla molemmissa sivuissa ja silmukoin kärjet yhteen puikoilla. Se tuntuikin toimivan hyvin ja käytän sitä kyllä varmasti jatkossakin. Neulan kanssa turatessa en ikinä oikein tunnu pääsevän hyvin alkuun. Sukat päätyivät veljelle joka tuntui olevan tyytyväinen lahjaansa. Kaikkea muuta asustetta on tullutkin vuosien mittaan tehtyä, mutta nämä taitavat olla ensimmäiset sukat. Sopivat kyllä sarjaan.

I also pretty much took only the patterns and starting stitch count from the pattern. I tried to follow it further but I did not like the decreases after the patterning on the cuff. They caused the cuff to bag oddly so I decided to continue with the original stitch count. I'm also not a big fan of hourglass heel so I made a normal french one with a reinforced heel flap. Then I made a bit more decreases after the heel so that I had fewer stitches for the foot. It seemed to work ok and the socks fit nicely. Toe I made how I usually make it, with decreases on both sides. I grafted the toe stitches together on the needles and that is a new technique I'm going to use surely after this. I never seem to get the start right when doing it with a needle. The socks were for my brother and he seemed quite happy with his present. I've made some knitted accessories to him over the years but I think this might be the first pair of socks I've knitted him. But they surely fit the series.

Olen lomalla tämän viikon ja pari päivää ensi viikostakin. Ja mikäpäs sen parempi aika sairastaa. Tuossa se alkoi sunnuntaina ja nyt tuntuu jo olevan suhteellisen normaali olo. Kun vain kuulisi vielä normaalisti.

I'm on holiday this week and a few days next week too. And what a better time to get ill. It started on Sunday and now I start to feel almost normal. I just wish my ears would stop feeling like I had stuffed cotton balls into them and my hearing would get back to normal.

Sellaiset kärjestä aloitetut, noin jalkaan 38 mahtuvat, äidille joululahjaksi. Pistinpä kuvankin tähän, vaikka äiti lukeekin blogia, koska asiasta puhuttiin jo Tampereen messuilla joten ei se yllätys olisi muutenkaan ollut, enää.

Ones that I started from the toes and fit about EUR38 foot. I even put the photos up though they are a Christmas present for my Mom and I know she reads my blog. But since we talked about these at the Tampere fair it was not going to be a big surprise.

Tavalliset, lyhyehköt ribbivarretkin tein niihin. Kutasin 4 mm puikoilla, nopeasti, aivottomasti, vajaassa viikossa.

Ordinary rib cuffs I made for them. Knit with 4 mm needles, quickly, brainlessly in less than a week.

Ainoa mikä ei tehnyt sukista vielä tylsiä oli lanka: Zealana Kia Ora Kauri, se paksumpi. Väri K10 Red Waina. Merinoa, opossumia ja silkkiä. Ei mitkään tavalliset saapassukat, mutta täydellinen viluvarpaille unisukaksi. Lämmön, sen tuntee, se oikein hohkaa. Kyllä kelpaa, varpailla.

The only thing that kept these from being boring too was the yarn: Zealana Kia Ora Kauri, the thicker one. Colour K10, Red Waina. Merino, possum and silk. Not your ordinary boot socks thes, but perfect for cold toes to sleep in. The warmth, you can feel it, it glows. Lucky them toes.

Rhombus

Uusi Taito-lehti ilmestyi kuun puolivälissä ja siitä löytyy Ulla-artikkelin lisäksi neljän "Ullalaisen" sukat, josta yhdet ovat minun. Ne kantavat nimeä Rhombus ja saivat nimensä ihan tylsästi vinoneliöstä (wiki-juttu) ja myös siksi koska pidän siitä miltä sana tuntuu suussa.

The new issue of Finnish Taito-magazine came out in the middle of this month and had a story about Ulla and also four sock patterns from four Ulla-actives. One of the patterns is mine, called Rhombus. The name I got from the shape in the socks (wiki-story) and also because I like how the word feels in my mouth.

Kyselyä lehden puolelta tuli jo ajoissa ja koska olen (melkein) aina valmiina kaikkeen niin lupauduin mukaan. Ideoita odotellessa neuloinkin kaikenlaista ja tuntui siltä että Silver Screen-huivin jälkeen päässä ei ollut yhtään omaperäistä neuleideaa. Deadline lähestyi pikkuhiljaa ja oli pakko ruveta toimiin tai luovuttaa (sitäkin mietin kyllä).

The idea came from the magazine quite early and since I'm (almost) always ready for anything I promised to design a pair of socks. Though in the mean time I knitted this and that and I was feeling that after Silver Screen I had no ideas of any knit-kind in my head. The deadline was closing in and it was time either to get to work or opt out (which I was thinking of doing too).

Sitten se alkuidea tuli, sieltä mistä ideat nyt tulevat, ja tällaiset niistä nyt sitten tuli. Langaksi halusin jo alunperin Wollmeisen, ja kevään korvilla keväänvihreä 100% merinoa oleva Zarte Knospe viehätti vihreydellään. Väri on hieman hankala kuvattava ja on todellisuudessa hieman kellertävämpi kuin mitä näistä kuvista voisi luulla.

Then the start of an idea came from wherever ideas come from and here's the result. I knew from the start that I wanted to use one of my Wollmeise yarns for this project and since the spring was approaching this spring-green yarn, 100% merino in colourway Zarte Knospe ended up for socks.

Seuraavalla kerralla neulomisen voisi kyllä aloittaa hieman aikaisemmin, vaikka pää kuinka yrittäisi väittävää ettei sillä ole ideoita. Mutta tulipa selvitettyä että minulta sukkaparin neulominen (2 mm puikoilla), suunnitteleminen ja ohjeiden ja kaavioiden tekeminen ei onnistu ihan viikonlopussa. Vaan se vaati kolmisen päivää intensiivistä neulomista. Sikäli homma sujui hyvin että purkamista ja uudelleenneulomista ei tarvinnut hirveästi tehdä. Tosin aloitin ensimmäisen sukan kahdesti kun ensimmäisestä varresta oli tulossa hieman liian kapea. Mutta mielestäni niistä tuli kuitenkin ihan sievät ja kuviotkin tuntuvat soljuvan ihan kivasti kärkeen asti. Viime hetkeillä tuli mieleen erilainen aloitus sukkiin, mutta maltoin nyt kuitenkin jättää sen tuohon joustimeen enkä ruvennut tekemään mitään virityksiä. Kelvannee se näinkin. Ja sivuhuomautuksena, omia jalkoja on kauhean hankala kuvata.

Next time (if such time comes) I might consider starting the knitting process a bit earlier, no matter how loud my brain complains about lack of ideas. For I found out that I can not manage to knit (with 2 mm needles), desing and write a pattern for socks in a weekend. It took three days of quite intensive knitting to produce this pair. Though all in all the process went quite well for I did not have to rip and re-knit much. I just started the first sock twice when I noticed that the leg-part was far too narrow for me and had to start again. But I think the end result is quite cute and the pattern seems to flow quite nicely from cuff to toes. Though, I had this other idea of how to start the socks but managed to avoid fiddling with them to get them done. So I just went with the ribbed cuff. Just an observation: it is really difficult to photograph ones own feet.

Enää ei lomailla - It's not holiday anymore

Loma on ohi ja olen ollut töissä viikon, vaikka se tuntuukin pidemmältä ajalta. Ensi viikolla pitäisi alkaa kouluttamaan ihmisiä uuden projektityökalun käyttöön ja viikko menikin mukavasti koulutusmateriaalia tehden. Saatiin materiaali valmiiksi hyvin ja ajoissa perjantaina viideltä. Mutta blogaamista ei oikein jaksanut ajatella, hyvä että neulomista yleensä. Viime viikonloppuna aloitettua aivotonta sukkaa neuloin kyllä hieman, tosin sitäkin piti purkaa kun olin onnistunut mömmimään mallineuleessa jotain. Ilmeisesti ei ole niin aivotonta neuletta ettei siinäkin onnistuisi tekemään virheitä jos ei yhtään keskity.

Mutta tässä se on, SWTC:n Tofutsies-langasta (väri 727) aloitettu kesäsukka. Törmäsin lankaan varastonsiivoussessioissa ja se pääsi sukkalankajonon kärkeen. Tuntuma on miellyttävä, puuvillamainen ja neuloutuu mukavasti. Väri olisi mielestäni voinut olla lila-pinkkikirjavaa ilman musta-punaista osuutta (mikä kuvassa näyttää varjota ei sitä ole vaan eri väriä). Toivon pintaneuleen hieman estävän läikittymistä, saa nähdä mitä tapahtuu kun sukka tuosta etenee. Ai, ja tässä on myös menossa ensimmäinen kokeilu neliskulmaisilla puikoilla. En vielå ole huomannut mitään eroa normaalipuikkoihin verrattuna - tasaista tulee mutta niin tulee tavallisillakin. Ehkä eron huomaisi enemmän sileässä, nurjalla puolella?

The holiday is over and I've been back at work for a week. Though it feels like a much longer time. We're going to start training people on how to use the new project management tool and I've spent last week doing the training material with a colleague which we finished just in time on Friday at five. But I haven't had much energy left over for blogging nor for knitting. I have knit the supposedly brainless sock I started last weekend though apparently that wasn't brainless enough for I've had to rip it some already since I fudged the pattern repeat.

But here it is, the almost brainless sock from SWTC:s Tofutsies (727) yarn. I ran into the yarn while I was spring-cleaning my stash and it jumped to the top of the sock-yarn queue. The yarn feels really nice, cottony, and it is nice to knit. I don't care much for the black-red part of the colourway (what looks like a shadow on the photo is not, it's the black-red part) for I think the yarn would have been much nicer with just the pink-lilac part. I hope my simple stitch pattern prevents the pooling somewhat but I guess I'll just have to wait and knit. Oh, and this is the first time with square needles too. I can't say I feel a difference compared to normal dpns. Yes, the stitches are even but so are they with normal needles too. Maybe there would be more difference with stockinette at the purl side?

Icarus on ollut valmiina jo tovin. Sain ystävälliseltä ravelryläiseltä lisää lankaa ettei tarvinnut repiä pelihousuja. Sillä lanka loppui toistamiseen kesken, nyt kaksi kerrosta vaille loppua. Saamani lanka ei ollut ihan samaa sävyä, vaan keltaisempaa, mutta sitä ei kyllä tuosta helposti huomaa. Ja jos joku huomauttaa asiasta niin en lupaa vastata mitään kaunista. Eilen rupesin vihdoin toimiin ja pyöräytin huivin pesukoneen huuhtelu-linkous -ohjelman läpi ja kaivoin pingoitusraudat esille (ensimmäinen kerta niillekin).

Icarus has been finished for some time now. I got more yarn from a friendly fellow raveller so that I didn't have to throw a fit when I ran out of yarn the second time. The yarn I got was not the same shade, it was more yellow, but you can't really tell that the last two rows are knit with slightly different colour. And if someone points that out I might say something rude back. Anyhow, I finally put the thing trough the rinse-spin cycle yesterday and dug out the blocking wires (first time for them too).

Hieman myöhemmin tilanne oli tämä. Käytin rautoja T-tyyliin, eli päällä ja keskellä ja tökin kärjet yksitellen mattoon. Toimi hyvin ja oli nopeata. Matto on edelleen kokoa 120x180, joten ihan sopuisan kokoinen huivi tuli, arviolta 170 cm leveä ja noin 100 cm korkea. Tänään voisi yrittää ottaa poseerauskuvia ulkona.

Slightly later the situation was this. I used the blocking wires in T-form, that is on the top and in the center and pinned the points individually to the rug. The size of the rug is 180 cm x 120 cm so I'd say the scarf came about 170 cm wide and 100 cm tall. Not a bad size. Hopefully I'll get some "in action"-photos taken today.

Joku kävi eilen Anttilassa ja osti neljä kerää lankaa. Coralloa ovat muutkin ostaneet ja ostinpa sitten minäkin, kaksi vihreää ja kaksi harmaata. Harmaassa olin kaupassa huomaavinani jotain pientä meleerausta, mutta ei se näin kotioloissa siltä näytä. Mutta, edullista sukkalankaa jokatapauksessa, jos tekee mieli esim. palmikkosukkaa tai muuta.

Someone went to Anttila yesterday and bought four skeins of yarn. Other people have bought Corallo and now I have it too, two in pale green and two in grey. I thought I saw some small variegation in the grey one but now that I look at it I don't. But, it's cheap yarn and suitable for socks. Patterns should come out nicely since the colours are quite light.

Gah!

Tässä olisin halunnut kertoa uuden Ullan ilmestynee, mutta ei se vielä olekaan valmis. Kaikenmaailman sähkökatkot, nettipimennot ja Taudit ovat vaikeuttaneet koostamista. Mutta tässä sentään pari teaseria. Näihin löytyy ohjeet tulevasta Ullasta: Kierre-kämmekkäät ja Kukkasillaan-sukat. Tämä tosin lähtee lauantaina matkalle, että uusi Ulla tulee kyllä viimeistään perjantaina.

Here I would have liked to announce that the new Ulla is out. But it is not yet, so I can't. All matter of force majour things intervened, like a long blackout, a net connection didn't work and a Disease. But here are some teasers for you, these will be in the new Ulla Kierre (Twist) fingerless gloves and Kukkasillaan (With Flowers) sukat. But this one is going abroad on Saturday so hopefully the new Ulla will be published before that.

Vaihteeksi jotain muuta - Something Else for a Change

Tällä mallilla olen tehnyt jo parit sukat, ohuesta, vähän paksummasta ja nyt vielä paksummasta. Ja kyllä on tullut huomattua että ehkä kannattaisi hieman selvemmin kirjoittaa muistiinpanot että niistä saisi jälkikäteen jotain selvääkin.

Lanka on Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled, jota sain Sockapalooza-vaihdossa pari vyyhtiä. Näyttää että vyyhdillisestä saa kevyesti parin sukkia, toisesta voikin sitten tehdä vaikka sormikkaat. Ihanan karkkiväristä lankaa, tässä menossa Harmonyn 3.25 mm paksuisilla puikoilla.

I've made similar socks twice before, from thin yarn, a bit thicker and now thicker still. And yes, I noticed that I should pay attention to the clarity of my notes. It is very difficult sometimes to follow them, bah.

The yarn I'm using is Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled. I got two skeins of this from my Sockapalooza-pal and it seems that one skein makes a pair of socks. So maybe the other skein will become a pair of gloves or something. Lovely candy colours, here using 3.25 mm Harmony needles.

Hieman arveluttaa vielä tuo koko. Sukassa vain 45 silmukkaa, mutta kun tuo pitsiraitakohta joustaa niin mukavasti. Ja olisikohan kantapäästä pitänyt tehdä hieman pidempi?

I'm a bit unsure about the size. I only have 45 stitches in this sock, though the lacy stripe stretches nicely. And maybe I should have made the heel flap a bit longer?

Olen vihdoinkin uskaltanut korkata nämä kirjatkin. Kauan kyllä niiden kanssa vetkuttelin, mutta lopulta raaskin aloittaa. Ensimmäinen projekti kirjattu, taskussa vyöte ja pätkä lankaa. Todella kätevää itseasiassa.

I've finally started these books too. I certainly took my own sweet time with that, but now I logged in my first project. In the pouch I put the ball band and some of the yarn. Very handy, actually.

Juhlaa - Party time

Noin, vihdoinkin valmista! Nyt on kaksi sukkaa, yksi joka jalalle - tai pingottimelle tässä tapauksessa. Ohje vaan pitäisi vielä kirjoittaa selväkieliseksi ja mitä pikemmin sitä parempi. Tuskin itsekään muistan parin viikon päästä mitä ihme lyhenteeni tarkoittavat. Mutta, valmiit kuitenkin...tai no, ehkä siellä on vielä langanpätkät päättelemättä.

Ai, ja nimi pitäisi keksiä. Ideoita?

Finally finished! Now I have two socks, one for each leg - or sock blockker in this case. All that remains is writing down the pattern in some legible format for I doubt that I'll remember what all my cryptic squiggles mean in a couple of week. Oh, well, maybe I have to weave in a couple of ends as well.

And they need a name - any suggestions?

Ja uutta pukkaa. Aloittelin jotain mustasta Hjertagarnin Ribboo-langasta (bambua ja soijaa), tässä takakappaletta. Lankaa pitäisi hankkia jostain lisää, koska sitä ei todellakaan ole tarpeeksi, nyt on käytettynä jo kaksi viidestä ja takakappale ei ole vielä ihan kainaloissakaan. En muistanut tärkeää kilon sääntöä (jos et tiedä mitä teet, osta kilo, siitä saa ainakin puseron) ja nyt se kostautuu. Jos saisin maanantaina sitä jostain lisää, kun pitäisi mennä hankkimaan myös uusia silmälaseja. Kävin perjantaina koettelukierroksella ja harmillisesti löysin melkein jokaisesta kaupasta jonkun kivan, nyt niitä mahdollisia taitaa olla viidet - vielä vaan se päätös...

And on with the new. I started something black from Hjertegarn's Ribboo (bamboo and soy), here's the back. I should get some more yarn for I've already used two balls out of the five I had and I'm not even to the arm holes yet. I didn't obey the important kilo-rule (when in doubt, buy a kilo, you can make at least one sweater out of it) and now I have to face the consequences. Maybe I can get some more on Monday when I go to choose new specs for me. I went to take a look on Friday and managed to find something in nearly every shop I went into so now I have about five possibles to choose from. All that is needed now is to choose the right one...

Nyt syntymäpäiville! Sankari täyttää neljä vuotta ja saa Hello Kittyä oikein urakalla. Äidiltä on tulossa Hello Kitty pyörä (näin sen perjantaina, se on aika...äklö) ja meiltä on tulossa pikkukamaa. On söpöä, on.

Now on to a birthday party. The party girl turns four and will get plenty of Hello Kitty as presents. Her Mom is giving her a Hello Kitty bike (I saw it on Friday and it's so cute it hurts) and we'll be giving some small stuff. Cute overload, anyone?

Ei se sukkaa pahasti - It does not sock too bad

Juu, itseasiassa on minulla jalusta kameralle...jossakin. Mutta se ei ole kauhean hyvä. On meillä (tai miehellä oikeastaan) kuitenkin tällainen gorillapodikin johon saa digijärkkärin lisäksi ruuvattua myös minun pikku-Ixukseni (gorilloita ei ole vahingoitettu kuvausten aikana). Se on kuitenkin aika iso, joten pienempi värillinen versio voisi olla aika vekkuli. Sininen vaikka?

Yes, actually I do have a tripod for my camera...somewhere. But it is not a very handy one. Though we (or the hubby actually) have one of these too, a gorilla pod (no gorillas were harmed while making the photograph). In addition to the big camera also my small Ixus can be screwed onto this. It is a bit big so a smaller one, with colours would be nice - blue, perhaps?

Sukkien valokuvaamisesta - On photographing socks

Ei minulla oikeastaan mitään asiaa ole, mutta toisaalta jos olet Ullan jäsen niin kannattaa mennä jäsensivuille äänestämään kansikuvaneuletta seuraavaan Ullaan.

Nämä eivät kuitenkaan löydy vielä seuraavasta numerosta koska ne eivät ole ihan valmiit. Ja näistä tulee todennäköisesti vielä pienempi versio myös. Teinkin tikusta asiaa ja kuvaa napsautin hieman kuvitusta blogiin. Tässäpä ongelman ydin, miten ottaa kuvat sukista siten että niistä vielä saa jotain selvää?

Jos yrittää sisätiloissa niin kamera haluaa välttämättä salaman ja tietäähän sitä miten sitten käy.

I don't have much to write about for I have worked on a pair of socks for ages already (ripping does it every time) and today I worked with the upcoming Ulla (no, it's not out yet).

But these you won't find in it for they are still not finished. And probably there will be a smaller version also. But I made them the subject of this blog-post anyway and snapped a couple of shots that clearly demonstrate the heart of my problem. For how is it possible to photograph socks while wearing them?

If you try it indoors the camera insists on using a flash and we all know how that turns out, don't we?

Ja ilman salamaa on lähes mahdotonta päästä vaadittavaan tarkkakätisyyteen jotta kuvasta ei tulisi tuhruinen. Eikä tullut tällä kertaakaan.

And without a flash it is nearly impossible to obtain steady enough hands to get a clear picture. Which I didn't manage to do this time either.

Oh, as long as I remember...the question of the week for SP12 was As a kid, what did you look forward to most about summer vacation/break/holiday?

Well, I'll continue to be boring for I just looked forward to not having to go to school and having time to play with my friends. We were a bit boring for we didn't have a summer cottage (though we did go visit other people's cottages sometimes) nor did we own a boat or anything (we did live in a coastal city but my Father was a sailor and I guess he just got enough of the sea while working) neither did I go to any camps or such. I just spent time with friends and played all summer long. And read books too.

Minulla oli suunnitelma tämän blogientryn suhteen: latasin kuvat lauantaina ja kirjoittelin osan tekstiä, loppuun en ehtinyt kun veli tuli hakemaan, loput voisin kirjoitella sitten vanhempien luota. No ei onnistunut, Internet Tablet ja Blogger ei ole mitenkään toimiva yhdistelmä joten onnistuin poistamaan vahingossa kaksi kuvaa. Lisäksi Bloggerin editori kaatoi selainta noin yhdeksän kertaa kymmenestä. Kyllä se hullukin lopulta luovuttaa, ja niin tein minäkin ja päätin odottaa kunnes pääsen kotikoneen ääreen. Ehkä se läppäri pitäisi sitten ensi kerralla ottaa kuitenkin mukaan.

I had plans for this blog entry: I uploaded the photos on Saturday and typed in some of the text, didn't manage it all for my brother came to pick me up so I decided to finish it while visiting the parents. Well, it didn't go quite as well as planned for Internet Tablet and Blogger is not a match made in heaven but more like hell. I managed accidentally to erase two of the photos and the Blogger editor managed to kill my browser nine times out of ten. Even the crazy give up eventually, so did I and decided to wait until I got home to a real computer. Maybe I should take the laptop along next time after all.

My knitting book stash grew with three new books last week. We thank Yesasia for speedy delivery, the books arrived about a week before the predicted shipping date. At the top of the pile is number 12 from Let's Knit-series (ISBN 978-4-529-04451-6) - lovely lacy knits. I have my eye on a beige jacket that is really not my style for it has ruffles, but I think I could do it without them. Underneath is Vintage Knitting in Tradition (ISBN 978-4-529-04457-8), Toshiyuki Shimada's new book. He's previous one is New Style of Heirloom Knitting, which I also own, picked it up on my trip to Japan. And last but not least Knitting Patterns Book 250 (ISBN 978-4-529-044176-8), the book that many knitters have and so do I now too. I like them all, the style is different than what I've been used to and I think I'll have use for them all.

Hyvin Monen Silmukan (82 650) Huivi on vihdoinkin valmis, pääteltynä ja kaikkea. Tai no...ajattelin että laitan siihen hapsut vielä päihin, suunnilleen raitojen mukaan. Mutta neulomisosuus on loppu, ja hyvä niin. Huivista tuli aika pitkä, muttei kuitenkaan liian pitkä ja mukavan kevyt ja ilmava ja lämmin. Lankaa on varattuna vielä toiseen samanmoiseen joka sopisi tummanruskeaan kevättakkiini (tummanruskea-lehmuksenvihreä-musta) mutta jotenkin tuntuu nyt siltä että en ihan heti viitsi tehdä toista vaikka aionkin tehdä siitä hieman lyhyemmän. Moista nälkävuosihuivia (raidat eivät kauheasti auttaneet) ei voi tehdä heti toista.

The Scarf of Very Many Stitches (82 650) is finally finished. Well...I plan to add some fringe to it, according to the stripes I think. But the knitting part is done and it was about time too. The scarf came out quite long but not too long and light, airy and warm. I have more of the thin merino to make a similar scarf to match my dark brown spring jacket (it'll be dark brown-light green-black) but I think I'm not up to it yet even though I plan on making it a bit shorter. Such mind-numbing experience (the stripes didn't help that much) shouldn't be repeated too soon, I think.

Vaan aloitin uutta, sukkaa pukkaa. Lankana Colinetten aina niin ihana Jitterbug, väriä Velvet Plum, joka on todella kaunis syvän viininpunainen. Vuorossa ovat toiset Jitterbug-sukkani, nämä jäävät toivottavasti minulle, ensimmäiset matkasivat suuren meren taa Sockapalooza-sukkavaihdon merkeissä. Malli on apinoitu ja jalostettu aiemmin talvella ostamastani neulepuserosta. Vei hieman aikaa järkeillä miten saa kolmesta kavennettua kaksi niin että keskimmäinen jää päälle, mutta kyllä se siitä, kun kokeili. Vaikka kirjahylly pursuaa ohjekirjoja niin eihän niitä voi käyttää vaan itse on väännettävä. Ja menossa on vieläpä kolmas aloitelma: ensin aloitin varresta, mutta kellokuviot tulevat niin väärinpäin, joten se oli purettava. Sitten aloitin kärjestä mutta laitoin mukaan liikaa sörsseliä ja siitä ei tullut kiva, joten piti taas purkaa ja yksinkertaistaa. Tästä pidän.

So I started something new, a pair of socks with Colinette Jitterbug. The colour is called Velvet Plum and it is a very nice deep burgunddy. This is my second pair of socks with this yarn and I still like knitting with it. These will stay with me, I hope. The first pair was for Sockapalooza and they ended up overseas. The pattern idea was from a sweater I bought earlier this year, I figured out how to make it and tweaked with it a bit. This is actually a third start: first I started top-down but then they weren't much like bells so that had to go. Then I began with toes but included too much stuff in and that didn't look right so it had to go too. Third time's charm, or so they say, so I started toe-up again with less frills. I like this one.

I didn't head home without gifts, these were for my Mother. Quite pretty, aren't they? And useful too.
