I was there and I'm square (or at least I have square)

Lomailin tuossa ohimennen viikon ja olen jo ehtinyt olla viikon takaisinkin. Mutta kun oli erinäisistä syistä pakko mennä töihin jo maanantaina eikä voinut viettää sitä toipuen, niin jetlagistä toipuminen vei normaalia kauemmin. Ja blogaaminenkaan ei huvittanut aiemmin...mutta nyt taas. Ei liene vaikea arvata missä kävin?

I was away for a week and I've been back a week already. But due to various reasons I could not be at home on Monday so my recuperation period was discontinued and it took longer than ususal to get over the jet lag. But I'm feeling me again and blogging happens too. I think it is not difficult to figure out where I went?

Jos ei oteta jet lagia huomioon niin lomailu tähän aikaan vuodesta sopii minulle hyvin. Se piristää kummasti, varsinkin jos menee jonnekin missä paistaa aurinko. Meillä oli hyvä tuuri - vain yhtenä päivänä satoi selvästi. Oli varsin kylmää mutta aurinko paistoi kuitenkin, mitä voi ehkä olla hieman vaikea huomata näistä kuvista. Mutta uskokaa nyt kuitenkin.

The jet lag aside, a holiday this time of the year is a very good thing for me, it makes me feel invigorated. Especially if I go someplace with more sun than here (it has been raining almost nonstop the last week). We were quite lucky, even though it was quite chilly it was sunny too - it rained noticeably only on one day. Though it might be a bit difficult to tell from these photos, you'll just have to trust me on this one.

Matka oli pääasiassa hortoilua ympäri kaupunkia ja shoppailua. Meillä kävi hiukan huono tuuri museoiden kanssa - tarkoitus oli käydä Ellis Islandilla ja vapaudenpatsaalla, mutta huonojen nettisivujen ansiosta emme päässeet sinne, mokoma meni kiinni aikaisin kiitospäivän vuoksi. Mutta, kävimme mm. Sinkkuelämää-kiertoajelulla (suosittelen, hauska) ja kuuntelemassa (vai katsellaanko sitä?) stand-up komiikkaa ja syömässä perinteisen kiitospäiväaterian joten hupia riitti, moneen suuntaan.

The trip consisted mainly of shopping and wondering around the town. We were a bit unlucky with our want of cultural experiences. We tried to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty but due to crappy websites we didn't know that they closed early on Thanksgiving so we couldn't go. But, we did among others Sex in the City bus tour (very enjoyable, I recommend), listened to some stand-up comedy and ate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Ja ehkä parissa lankakaupassakin tuli vierailtua...tosin Knitpicks-tilauksemme ei saapunut hotellille ajoissa vaikka maksoin ylimääräistä nopeasta toimituksesta. Selvittely on vielä kesken mutta hiukan rupeaa jo ottamaan päähän. Jos ei kohta tule jo jotain vastausta asiaan niin soitan Veijo Visalle ja peruutan koko maksun. Nih!

We maybe visited a yarn shop or two...although our Knitpicks order did not arrive at the hotel on time even though we paid extra for a speedy delivery. I'm still in the process of sorting things out but I'm gettin a bit pissed off to tell the truth and if I don't receive some answers soon I'm going to call my credit card company and cancel the payment. So there!

Mutta, jos laittaa kaksi neulojaa suureen kaupunkiin niin mitä siitä sitten saadaan? Neliskulmaisia puikkoja ainakin. Näitä löytyi Seaport Yarn -kaupasta. Muistaakseni ostin myös yhdet pyöröpuikot, mutta en nyt löytänyt niitä tähän kuvaussessioon. Näiden kanssa pitäisi kuulemma olla helpompi neuloa. En osaa kyllä nyt sanoa mitään puolesta enkä vastaan kun en ole kokeillut niitä vielä - mutta ovat ne ainakin hassut, eikö?

But, if you put two knitters into a big city what do you get? At least square knitting needles. These we came across at Seaport Yarn. I have a feeling I bought also a pair of circular needles but I didn't find them for this photo op. They're supposedly easier to knit with but I can't really comment on that since I haven't tried them out yet. But at least they're something new.

Lankanenä toimii ja voi hyvin. String tuli bongattua ihan ohimennen ja sieltä mukaan tarttui kaksi vyyhtiä punaista Prism Yarnsin Merino Mia-lankaa (kuvassa ne yksiväriset). Näistä piti tulla kauluri mutta sitten Knitty City-kaupasta (joka olisi voinut laittaa infoa ajoissa nettisivulle että se menee kiinni aikaisemmin keskiviikkona ennen kiitospäivää - siellä piti käydä kahdesti) löytyi kivaa punakirjavaa Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon-lankaa ja siitähän se kauluri nyt sitten tulee. Merino Miat voi käyttää vaikka toisiin Kierteisiin. Kävimme myös Purlissa mutta sieltä ei tullut ostettua mitään.

The yarn nose is well and working. It spotted String and I got two skeins of Merino Mia from Prism Yarns. These were supposed to become a cowl of some sort but after our visit to Knitty City (which could have posted on their web site in time that they close early on Wednesday due to Thanksgiving, we had to make two trips there) I'm not so sure anymore. For there I found a lovely red skein on Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon that will be the cowl. The Merino Mias might become another set of Kierre-fingerless mittens for example. We did visit Purl too but we didn't buy anything there.

Kinokuniyalla on kauppa myös Manhattanilla. Neulekirjoja on runsaasti ja siellä vierähtikin tovi. Mukaan lähti kolme koreaa kirjaa, joista yksi tosin on virkkausta. Mutta kuka voisi vastustaa virkattua Hello Kittyä? Kyllä tästä yksi joululahja löytyy.

Kinokuniya has a store in Manhattan too and they have quite a few knitting books so a while was spent there. I came out with these three pretty books one of which is a crochet book but who could resist a crocheted Hello Kitty? I see one Christmas present here at least.

Kenelle kellot soivat? - For Whom the Bells Toll?

Minulla oli suunnitelma tämän blogientryn suhteen: latasin kuvat lauantaina ja kirjoittelin osan tekstiä, loppuun en ehtinyt kun veli tuli hakemaan, loput voisin kirjoitella sitten vanhempien luota. No ei onnistunut, Internet Tablet ja Blogger ei ole mitenkään toimiva yhdistelmä joten onnistuin poistamaan vahingossa kaksi kuvaa. Lisäksi Bloggerin editori kaatoi selainta noin yhdeksän kertaa kymmenestä. Kyllä se hullukin lopulta luovuttaa, ja niin tein minäkin ja päätin odottaa kunnes pääsen kotikoneen ääreen. Ehkä se läppäri pitäisi sitten ensi kerralla ottaa kuitenkin mukaan.

I had plans for this blog entry: I uploaded the photos on Saturday and typed in some of the text, didn't manage it all for my brother came to pick me up so I decided to finish it while visiting the parents. Well, it didn't go quite as well as planned for Internet Tablet and Blogger is not a match made in heaven but more like hell. I managed accidentally to erase two of the photos and the Blogger editor managed to kill my browser nine times out of ten. Even the crazy give up eventually, so did I and decided to wait until I got home to a real computer. Maybe I should take the laptop along next time after all.

Neulontakirjavarasto kasvoi tviime viikolla kolmella uudella teoksella. Kiitämme Yesasiaa nopeasta toimituksesta, kirjat saapuivat noin viikkoa ennen arvioitua lähetysaikaa, ei paha. Pinossa päällimmäisenä Let's Knit-sarjasta numero 12 (ISBN 978-4-529-04451-6) ja se sisältää kauniita pitsineuleita. Tuolta iskin silmäni beessiin jakkuun, joka tosin on hieman outoa tyyliä minulle, siinä on nimittäin röyhelöitä mutta eiköhän ne voi jättää poiskin. Siinä alla löhöilee Vintage Knitting in Tradition (ISBN 978-4-529-04457-8), Toshiyuki Shimadan uusi kirja, häneltähän on aiemmin tullut New Style of Heirloom Knitting, joka myös koristaa kirjahyllyäni, taannoiselta Japaninmatkalta mukaan poimittuna. Ja alimmaisena on jo monen kirjahyllystä löytyvä Knitting Patterns Book 250 (ISBN 978-4-529-044176-8), nytpä siis minullakin. Pidän kaikista, tyyli on jotenkin erilaista kuin mihin on tottunut näitä länsimaisia kirjoja selaillessa, eli eiköhän noille käyttöä tule.

My knitting book stash grew with three new books last week. We thank Yesasia for speedy delivery, the books arrived about a week before the predicted shipping date. At the top of the pile is number 12 from Let's Knit-series (ISBN 978-4-529-04451-6) - lovely lacy knits. I have my eye on a beige jacket that is really not my style for it has ruffles, but I think I could do it without them. Underneath is Vintage Knitting in Tradition (ISBN 978-4-529-04457-8), Toshiyuki Shimada's new book. He's previous one is New Style of Heirloom Knitting, which I also own, picked it up on my trip to Japan. And last but not least Knitting Patterns Book 250 (ISBN 978-4-529-044176-8), the book that many knitters have and so do I now too. I like them all, the style is different than what I've been used to and I think I'll have use for them all.

Hyvin Monen Silmukan (82 650) Huivi on vihdoinkin valmis, pääteltynä ja kaikkea. Tai no...ajattelin että laitan siihen hapsut vielä päihin, suunnilleen raitojen mukaan. Mutta neulomisosuus on loppu, ja hyvä niin. Huivista tuli aika pitkä, muttei kuitenkaan liian pitkä ja mukavan kevyt ja ilmava ja lämmin. Lankaa on varattuna vielä toiseen samanmoiseen joka sopisi tummanruskeaan kevättakkiini (tummanruskea-lehmuksenvihreä-musta) mutta jotenkin tuntuu nyt siltä että en ihan heti viitsi tehdä toista vaikka aionkin tehdä siitä hieman lyhyemmän. Moista nälkävuosihuivia (raidat eivät kauheasti auttaneet) ei voi tehdä heti toista.

The Scarf of Very Many Stitches (82 650) is finally finished. Well...I plan to add some fringe to it, according to the stripes I think. But the knitting part is done and it was about time too. The scarf came out quite long but not too long and light, airy and warm. I have more of the thin merino to make a similar scarf to match my dark brown spring jacket (it'll be dark brown-light green-black) but I think I'm not up to it yet even though I plan on making it a bit shorter. Such mind-numbing experience (the stripes didn't help that much) shouldn't be repeated too soon, I think.

Vaan aloitin uutta, sukkaa pukkaa. Lankana Colinetten aina niin ihana Jitterbug, väriä Velvet Plum, joka on todella kaunis syvän viininpunainen. Vuorossa ovat toiset Jitterbug-sukkani, nämä jäävät toivottavasti minulle, ensimmäiset matkasivat suuren meren taa Sockapalooza-sukkavaihdon merkeissä. Malli on apinoitu ja jalostettu aiemmin talvella ostamastani neulepuserosta. Vei hieman aikaa järkeillä miten saa kolmesta kavennettua kaksi niin että keskimmäinen jää päälle, mutta kyllä se siitä, kun kokeili. Vaikka kirjahylly pursuaa ohjekirjoja niin eihän niitä voi käyttää vaan itse on väännettävä. Ja menossa on vieläpä kolmas aloitelma: ensin aloitin varresta, mutta kellokuviot tulevat niin väärinpäin, joten se oli purettava. Sitten aloitin kärjestä mutta laitoin mukaan liikaa sörsseliä ja siitä ei tullut kiva, joten piti taas purkaa ja yksinkertaistaa. Tästä pidän.

So I started something new, a pair of socks with Colinette Jitterbug. The colour is called Velvet Plum and it is a very nice deep burgunddy. This is my second pair of socks with this yarn and I still like knitting with it. These will stay with me, I hope. The first pair was for Sockapalooza and they ended up overseas. The pattern idea was from a sweater I bought earlier this year, I figured out how to make it and tweaked with it a bit. This is actually a third start: first I started top-down but then they weren't much like bells so that had to go. Then I began with toes but included too much stuff in and that didn't look right so it had to go too. Third time's charm, or so they say, so I started toe-up again with less frills. I like this one.

Kymenlaaksoon ei menty ilman lahjoja, tässä äidille. Aika söötit, eikö? Ja tarpeelliset.

I didn't head home without gifts, these were for my Mother. Quite pretty, aren't they? And useful too.

Tuntuu sunnuntailta - It feels like Sunday

Jaa, että miksikö? No ehkäpä siksi että en ollut perjantaina töissä. Veli tuli torstaina käymään ja vietimme perjantaina jokusen tunnin koluten Helsingin divareita. Tällä kertaa ei löytynyt kivoja neulekirjoja, mutta jotain silti tarttui mukaan. Ostin minäkin sitten tuon Friday Night Knitting Club-kirjan, kun oli halvalla. Ja mukaan tarttui myös ensimmäinen kausi Babylon 5-sarjaa.

And why is that? Well, I think it's because I was not at work on Friday. My brother came over on Thursday and we spent some hours on Friday going through some of the second hand book stores in Helsinki. This time I did not find any nice knit books but I picked up a few things nonetheless. I got a copy of the Friday Night Knitting Club since it was in a good condition and cheap too, and I also found the first season of Babylon 5.

Torstain neulekonekursssilla tein mallitilkkua. Tarkoitus on tehdä V-kaulainen liivi jotain Eunnyn Deep V Argyle Vest -tyyliin, mutta ei kuitenkaan. Kuvitelkaa tämä kuvio kirjavalla pohjalla, ja pohjavärit ovat tästä langasta (Knitpicks Gloss) värit Concord Grape, Dusk ja Woodland Sage (oheisessa kuvassa pohjavärinä on viimeksimainittu). Ja mustalla leveä joustin kaula-aukkoon ja helmaan, kapeampi joustin kädentiehen. Ensi kerralla pääsee jo varmaan neulomaan, jei.

On Thursday's machine knitting class I did a swatch. I'm going to make a V-neck vest, something like Eunny's Deep V Argyle Vest but not quite. Picture this pattern in a randomly striped background of colours from this yarn (Knitpicks Gloss), colours Concord Grape, Dusk and Woodland Sage (the background colour in the above swatch is Sage). And a wide rib in black on the neck edge and hem, narrower one at the arm edges. Next week I'll get to the knitting part, yay.
