Värikästä lauantaita - It's a colourful Saturday

Mies tuli maanantaina työmatkalta, oli kotona jo minun tullessa töistä. Jälleennäkeminen oli herkkä - menin vatsavaivoissani makaamaan ja vietinkin loppuillan sohvalla kääriytyneenä vilttiin ja välillä oksennellen. Vatsatauti siis iski.

Sain kivoja tuliaisiakin tosin niistä nauttiminen jäi loppuviikkoon. Amerikanmaalla kun tuo ystävänpäivä on ihan erilainen spektaakkeli niin sain pari kauniisti koristeltua suklaarasiaa. Godivaa ja jotain paikallisia herkkuja.

The hubby came home from a business trip on Monday, he was at home when I got home from work. The reunion was sweet and tender - I got off to bed with a queasy stomach and spent the rest of the night on the sofa wrapped up in a blanket leaving only to go the bathroom to empty my stomach. Yes, I caught a stomach bug.

I got some nice souvenirs too but it took me to the end of the week to be able to properly enjoy them. Since the valentine's day is more of a deal in the States than here, the shops were filled with heart-shaped thingies and such. I got two nicely decorated chocolate boxes, one filled with Godiva goodies, the other with local truffles.

Sain myös parit kunnon bling-kynsilakat, Deborah Lippmannia väreissä Across the Universe ja Today Was A Fairytale. Lankaa en tällä kertaa tilannut hotellille kun lumiolosuhteet arveluttivat. Eipä silti että se lanka täältä ihan heti loppuisikaan.

I also got a few bling nail polishes from Deborah Lippmann: Across the Universe and Today Was A Fairytale. This time I did not order any yarn to the hotel for I was not sure how the snow situation affected the post. Not that I'm out to run out of yarn in a near future.

Kun taudin pahin vaihe oli ohi mutta en ollut vielä täydessä terässä ei oikein tehnyt mieli neuloakaan. Sen sijaan viimeistelin hitaasti paria keskeneräistä neulekonevillatakkia. Toinen niistä on se omituisen värinen pikkutakki jonka esittelin aiemmassa postauksessa (tämä). Siinä on nyt molemmat hihat, nappilistan puolikas ja pääntien reunusta kiinni. Toinen on tämä epämääräisen oloinen loimi. Se ei näytä roikkumassa ollessaan kyllä paljon miltään ja kuvaaminenkin oli hieman hankalaa. Kyseessä on kuitenkin pitkä merino-tencel takki kolmessa värissä: vedensininen, mariini ja violetti. Se on jokaneulan ribbiä ja kiinnittelin siihen etukaitaletta ja hihoja. Hihapyöriöitä pitää luultavasti hieman purkaa, koska pyöriö pussittaa omituisesti olkapään kohdalta. Muuten tilanne näyttää ihan hyvältä sen suhteen että saisin sen päälle kohta. Polviin ulottuva lämmin neuletakki tällä ilmalla olisi ihan passeli. Ja toivottavasti saan parempia kuviakin aikaiseksi.

After I was over the worst phase of the stomach bug but not up to full capacity yet I did not feel much like knitting. Instead I seamed some pieces together of these two machine knit cardies I'm making. The one being the odd-coloured thing I showed in a previous post (this) which now has both sleeves, one half of a button band and part of neck band sewn on. The other one is this slinky thing I photographed hanging. It does not look much and it was really hard to photograph. It is every needle rib, in three colours of merino-tencel: aqua, navy and purple. It now has one sleeve attached to it too. I probably have to rip a part of the sleeve cap for it is a bit too long and makes a weird bump on the shoulder region. But I hope to get it finished soon so that I can wear it. Long, woolly cardigan sounds just the thing in this weather. And hopefully I get some better photos too.

Parisen vuotta sitten tilasin Kathryn Alexanderilta custom-värjäyksen Color on Color-huivia varten. En sitten heti päässyt huivin neulomisen kimppuun ja se sitten jäikin. Nyt kaivoin kaikki pikku lankakerät taas esiin ja pistin puikoille.

En nyt tiedä minkälaista se ohjeen alkuperäislanka on (Paternayan Persian), mutta minun lankani eivät ole sitä vaan jotain yksikierteistä ohuehkoa villalankaa. Yksinkertaisena en sillä saanut mitenkään haluttua tiheyttä (17 s ja 23 krs = 10x10 cm 3.75 millin puikoilla) joten päädyinkin neulomaan sitä kaksinkertaisena - tiedä sitten oliko se tarkoitus vai ei. Saan tästä 4 mm puikoilla nyt suunnilleen haluttua tiheyttä joten pysyn siinä. Koska tämä ei ole varsinainen kitti, ei lankoja siis ole mitenkään numeroitu saati sitten paritettu ohjeen kanssa. Pistelen värit siis haluamaani järjestykseen ja olen jo muutenkin hiukan soveltanut ohjetta. En nimittäin ymmärrä miksi siinä pitää olla niin paljon sileää nurjaa (reverse stockinette) ja korvaankin osan ainaoikealla. Lisäksi olen jo joutunut hieman soveltamaan raitojen leveyttä kun väri ei ole aina ihan riittänyt. Mutta, eipä tuo minua häiritse. Hauskaa tuo pienien vyyhtien kanssa puuhaaminen on vielä ainakin ollut. Tässä eilisillan saldo.

A couple of years ago I ordered a custom-dye from Kathryn Alexander from Color on Color scarf. I did not have the possibility to start knitting on it right away and then I somehow just didn't. But now I took out all the small skeins and started knitting.

I don't know what the original yarn is like (Paternayan Persian) but the yarn I have is single-ply thin wool. I had no chance of getting the gauge (17 sts, 23 rows = 10 cm on 3.75 mm needles) with it single so I'm using it double and with 4 mm needles. That brings me about gauge and the resulting fabric is not too loose so I'm sticking to it. And since this is not actually a kit, the yarns are in no way numbered nor are they attached to the pattern in any way. So I am choosing the colours as I knit and how I see fit. I've also already modified the pattern for I do not see the point of that much reverse stockinette and I'm replacing part of it with garter stitch. But that is just how I am and I'm not too bothered by it. So far it has been quite fun knitting with the small skeins and choosing the colour combinations. This is what I made in couple of hours last night.

Muukalaisia ulkoavaruudesta - Aliens from outer space

Joulu meni ja sain jouluneulontanikin melkein valmiiksi. Vain hieman päättelyä vailla olevat sukat päätyivät pakettiin aattoaamuna. Päättelykin tuli tehtyä siinä sivussa jouluruokia mussutellessa ja valmiiksi tulivat. Ai mitkä siis? No bmp-sukat, Knittystä.


Christmas came and went and I almost finished my xmas knitting. I finally packaged the socks on the morning of 24th just missing some end weaving. Which I did, eventually, after we had exhanged the gifts. Now they are all finished. What, you might ask - well, bmp from Knitty of course.

Itse tein hieman uudempaa designia, taitaa olla joku deluxe-versio , väreillä siis. Lähinnä siksi että kotona ei ollut vihreää saati sitten valkoista sukkalankaa ja muutenkin pirteämpi viehätti enemmän. Pohjalankana on Schoeller+Stahlin Fortissima Socka mustana, väreinä on kolmea sävyä Wollmeisea, 100% ja twiniä (Küken, Wasabi ja Türkis), vaaleanvihreää Anttilan Coralloa, lilaa Malabrigo Sockia, purppuraa Opalia ja punaista Lana Grossan silkki-kashmirsukkalankaa. Sukkalankavarastoni näyttää siis olevan laaja ja monipuolinen.

I made a bit newer version of the game, a deluxe-version, with colours. Mainly because I had neither white or forest green sock yarn at home but also because I wanted to use more colours and make the socks a bit more cheerful. The base yarn is Schoeller+Stahl Fortissima Sock in black and the other colours used were three colourways of Wollmeise, both 100% and twin (Küken, Wasabi and Türkis), pale green Anttila Corallo, lilac Malabrigo Sock, purple Opal and red Lana Grossa silk/cashmere sock yarn. Yes, I do seem to have an extensive sock yarn stash.

En myöskään ottanut ohjeesta oikeastaan muuta kuin varren silmukkalun ja kuviot. Yritin seurata ohjetta pidemmälle mutta en pitänyt varren kuvioiden jälkeisistä kavennuksista. Ne saivat aikaan outoa pussitusta varteen ja jätinkin ne tekemättä. Jatkoin suoraan samalla silmukkamäärällä kuin varressa ja tein normaalin ranskalaisen kantapään vahvistetulla kantalapulla. Kavensin hieman enemmän silmukoita pois kiilakavennuksissa ja se tuntuikin toimivan hyvin. Kärjen tein normaalisti kaventamalla molemmissa sivuissa ja silmukoin kärjet yhteen puikoilla. Se tuntuikin toimivan hyvin ja käytän sitä kyllä varmasti jatkossakin. Neulan kanssa turatessa en ikinä oikein tunnu pääsevän hyvin alkuun. Sukat päätyivät veljelle joka tuntui olevan tyytyväinen lahjaansa. Kaikkea muuta asustetta on tullutkin vuosien mittaan tehtyä, mutta nämä taitavat olla ensimmäiset sukat. Sopivat kyllä sarjaan.

I also pretty much took only the patterns and starting stitch count from the pattern. I tried to follow it further but I did not like the decreases after the patterning on the cuff. They caused the cuff to bag oddly so I decided to continue with the original stitch count. I'm also not a big fan of hourglass heel so I made a normal french one with a reinforced heel flap. Then I made a bit more decreases after the heel so that I had fewer stitches for the foot. It seemed to work ok and the socks fit nicely. Toe I made how I usually make it, with decreases on both sides. I grafted the toe stitches together on the needles and that is a new technique I'm going to use surely after this. I never seem to get the start right when doing it with a needle. The socks were for my brother and he seemed quite happy with his present. I've made some knitted accessories to him over the years but I think this might be the first pair of socks I've knitted him. But they surely fit the series.

Olen lomalla tämän viikon ja pari päivää ensi viikostakin. Ja mikäpäs sen parempi aika sairastaa. Tuossa se alkoi sunnuntaina ja nyt tuntuu jo olevan suhteellisen normaali olo. Kun vain kuulisi vielä normaalisti.

I'm on holiday this week and a few days next week too. And what a better time to get ill. It started on Sunday and now I start to feel almost normal. I just wish my ears would stop feeling like I had stuffed cotton balls into them and my hearing would get back to normal.

Kirjavaa neuletta - Multicoloured knitting

Neulekonekurssi on tältä keväältä ohi ja ainoa mitä sain syksyn ja kevään aikana tehdyksi on tässä. Puolustukseksi täytyy sanoa että olin syksyllä ja alkukeväästä aika paljon pois erinäisten sairauksien vuoksi ja tulihan sitä erinäinen määrä mallitilkkujakin kokeiltua. Mutta pidän, ja olenkin jo, pitänyt siis. Mutta mikään ei ole ikinä täydellistä ja niinpä ei tämäkään. Tuohon helmaresorin yläpuolelle tuli ihme möykyt, kun modasin kaavan omasta mallikaavasta enkä ajatellut että tuo kaari ei jatku resorissa, olisi voinut tehdä hieman suoremman. No, katson miten se asettuu (vai asettuuko ollenkaan) ja jos se häiritsee niin käytän vaikka ompelukonetta hieman suoristamaan saumaa. Tuo näyttää kyllä todella hyvältä mustan paidan ja mustien housujen kanssa.

Knitting machine class is over for the spring and the only thing I managed to do during autumn and spring is here. In my defence I have to say that I was away a lot during the autumn and start of spring due to all kind of ails and pains. And I did make a number of different swatches. But I like it and have worn in already. Nothing is ever perfect, though, and this is far from it. There's a strange bump above the hem ribbing (as you can see) and it shows when wearing. The reason for this is that I modified the vest from my own model pattern and didn't think that the curve wouldn't continue with the ribbing. If I had I would have made it more straight. Well, I'll see what happens with wear and if nothing does and it still bothers me I thought I might use a sewing machine to straighten it a bit. It does look mighty spiffy with a black blouse and pants, though.

Vähän faktaa...malli on siis oma, kuvio kaivettu jostain netin syövereistä, lanka on Knitpicksin Glossia (sitä paksumpaa) jota oli neljää väriä: Concord Grape (lila), Woodland Sage (vihreä), Dusk (sininen) ja musta. Musta loppui kesken (sitä oli alunperin vain 100g) ja sitä piti hankkia lisää. Kaikenkaikkiaan lankaa meni luokkaa 300g joista suurin osa oli mustaa.

Here's some facts...the pattern is my own, the fair-isle stitch pattern was found from the internet somewhere, the yarn is Knitpicks Gloss (the thicker version) in colours of Concord Grape, Woodland Sage, Dusk and Black. Ran out of the black at some point and had to get more (originally I had only 100g of it). All in all I spent about 300g in this, most of which was black.

Ruusuja keväällä? - Roses in spring?

Vaikka ulkona on mittarin mukaan -2 astetta nyt, niin eikö maaliskuu ole jo kevättä? Ja ruusuista vastaa Autumn Rose. Tilasin ohjeen (ok, Simply Shetland kirjanen 4, mutta tuon takia sen tilasin)ja kirjakauppa oli nopea ja sain sen jo. Harmikseni minulla on vain kahdeksan väriä Kamenaa, ja puseroon tarvitaan 11. Eli on pakko mennä lankakauppaan *huokaus*. Mutta näistä väreistä lähdetään liikkeelle, saa nähdä mihin päädytään. Kah, sopivasti 24 silmukkaa mallineuleessa, taitaa toteutua neulekoneella tämä.

Although there's -2 degrees C outside isn't March spring already? As for the roses, I ordered the pattern for Autumn Rose. Well, what I really ordered was Simply Shetland book 4 but the other patterns are of little interest to me. The bookshop was quick and I have it already, sadly I only have eight colours of Kamena and the pattern demands for 11 colours. So I'll be forced to visit a yarn shop *sigh*. But these colours are the starting point, we'll see what I'll end up with. What do you know, there's 24 stitches in the pattern...me thinks the knitting machine is calling.

Valmis! - Done!

Huonojen kuvien kuningatar täällä, iltaa. Päättelin vihdoinkin kirjoneulehihapuseron ja nyt se on sitten valmis. Mutta ne valokuvat, huh. Yritä tässä pimeydessä nyt sitten ottaa jotain järkeviä kuvia jostain mustasävyisestä neulepuserosta.

The queen of bad photos here, evening. I finally wove in the rest of the ends of the fair-isle sleeved top and now it is done. But the photos, whew. It's almost impossible to get any good ones in this darkness while the sweater in question is quite black.

Here it is laying on the bed. Otherwise quite good but there was dust on the lens and ends of the sleeves are missing. Colours are quite good though.

Next I put it on the hanger. Well, what could I say. The colours are good but it's a bit blurry and, well, it hangs.

Itselaukaisimen avulla päällä. Entisen itäsaksan kuulantyöntäjä-lookia ihan selvästi. Mutta se istuu kauniisti. Jospa pitäisi keskittyä vain sukkiin näin talvella. Niitä on hieman helpompi kuvata.

Here's with the aid of the self-timer. Obviously a member of the former East-German women's shot put team. But it fits nicely. Maybe I should concentrate on socks during the winter. They're somewhat easier to photograph.

Not stranded on a fair ilse anymore

Hämmästyttävää, se näyttää sittenkin ihan villapaidalta. Reunan joustinneulekerros vaan päättää kääntyä kaksinkerroin mutta eiköhän höyryttäminen auta. Tässä vaiheessa pääsi jo kokeilemaan että ei ainakaan musta hiha ole liian lyhyt vaikka sitä pelkäsinkin.

Amazing, it looks like a sweater already. The rib edging just decided to act weirdly but I think a good steaming will see to it. At this stage I managed to try it on a bit and notice that my fears did not come through, at least the black sleeve is of the correct length.

Tässä vielä "yritän kuvata itseäni vessan peilistä"-valokuva. Se istuu kyllä kauniisti mutta tuo oikean olan kirjoneulepala vetää hiukan vinoon niinkuin näkyy. Kiinnitän hihan paikalleen ja mietin sitten yritänkö fiksata sitä jotenkin vai annanko olla. Väriyhdistelmä ei enää tunnu ollenkaan oudolta.

Here's the "trying to take a photo of myself via a mirror"-photo. It fits nicely but the fair-isle piece on the right side is not quite straight. I'll attach the other sleeve and then figure out whether it needs some fixing or if I just let it be. But the colour combo does not feel so strange anymore.

On with the show

Asioita on tapahtunut, niinkuin niillä on tapana ja ei ole hirveästi huvittanut blogailla. Mutta, nyt olen taas takaisin suunnilleen normaalitilanteessa ja on jotain näytettävääkin. Joten takaisin normaaliin ohjelmaan.

Things have happened, as they tend to do and I haven't much felt like blogging lately. But, now things are almost back to normal and I have stuff to show you. So it's on with the show.

Neulekonekurssilla on edessä tämän syksyn viimeinen kerta. Ja minulta loppui lanka, niinkuin ennustikin. Tosin olisi kiva olla joskus väärässäkin. Mutta tässä kirjoneuleliivin etu-ja takakappaleet. Eroavaisuuksia löytyy (löytyykö?), mutta tein johtotason päätöksen ja käsittelen sitä/niitä design-elementtinä. Vaihtoehdot olivat tämä tai purkaa n riviä kirjoneuletta. Pahoittelen erivärisiä kuvia, yritin käsitellä niitä mutta etukappaleen neonkeltainen apulanka on aika vahva värinvääristyselementti. Mutta värit ovat aika sinnepäin kuitenkin. Kyllä siitä vielä kiva tulee ja lisälankaakin pitäisi tulla sopivasti ennen kevään kurssin alkua. Sitten vain pitää miettiä mitä muuta sitä keväällä tekisi.

The machine knitting class has progressed and today was the penultimate time (yes, I know some nifty words). And lo, I ran out of yarn as I predicted. It would have been nice to be wrong but no worries, I have new yarn coming soonish so I should be able to finish this when the class starts again in January. But, presenting the back and front pieces of the fair-isle vest. There's some differences (can you spot them?) but I made an executive decision and consider them design elements. It was either that or rip more than a few rows of fair-isle. I'm sorry about the different coloured photos but the day-glo yellow waste-yarn strip in the front piece was a bit too much for my camera and it messed the colours up a bit. But I have faith that it'll be absolutely smashing once its finished.

Eikä kirjoneuleista pääse vieläkään eroon. Käsinväkerretty kirjoneulehiha on tässä vaiheessa. Vein sen kurssille mukaan koska siellä on aivan ihana höyrytyssysteemi. Kyllä jos kotona olisi sellainen niin silittäisin innokkaasti. Ehkä. Mahdollisesti. Tai no, tuskin, mutta ainakin se olisi hauskempaa. Moisella oikeaa itsepäisinkin ainaoikeinreuna. Kiva vehje, se. Ja kivalta näyttää hihakin. Seuraava vaihe on sitten kokoonompelu ja reunavirkkaukset. Tässähän voi jo melkein taputella itseään selkään koska molemmat hihat ovat vieläpä suunnilleen samankokoiset. Hyvä minä!

And you can't get rid of fair-isle for the sleeve of the fair-isle sleeved top is here. All nice, finished and flat. I took it along to the class for they have this wonderful steaming system there. Now, if I had one of those at home I would iron my clothes more. Maybe. Possibly. Well, not really but at least it would be so much more fun that it is now. It flattens even the most stubborn stockinette curl. Nice piece of equipment and nice is the sleeve too. All that is left is sewing it together and crotcheting the edges. I might pat myself on the back at this stage for the two sleeves are about the same size and all. Yay me!

Ympäri mennään yhteen tullaan - What goes around comes around

Kirjoneulepaita on vielä(kin) vaiheessa. Ei siitä nyt kuvia, samanlaisia kun olen esitellyt jo useasti. Etupalanen on tehty uudestaan, tiheys täydellinen, joten aloitin hihan uudestaan. Olen päättänyt että teen tuon valmiiksi enkä aloita mitään muuta sitä ennen. Mielellään sitä vaan tekisi jotain muuta jos yksi asia tökkii. Mutta tahdon tuota joskus pitääkin enkä haudata sitä ufokasan pohjimmaiseksi.

The fair-isle sleeved sweater is still ongoing. No photos of it now since I've shown similar ones plenty of times already. I knit the front piece again and the gauge was spot on and then I went on to the sleeve. I've decided that I will finish that before I start anything new. I easily get sidetracked when something bugs me but I want to wear that sweater and not bury in in my ufo-pile.

Ehdin neulekonekurssillekin vaihteeksi. Sain melkein koko takakappaleen tehtyä, liivistä siis. Näyttää kivalta, ongelmana on vaan se että lanka loppuu kesken. Mustaa menee sen verran että sitä ei enää riitä reunoihin (kaulus, hihat, helma). Pitää siis hankkia sitä lisää tai vaihtaa johonkin korvaavaan. Käytetty lanka on Knitpicksin Glossia joten jos haluan saada tuon valmiiksi tämän kurssin aikana (3 kertaa vielä) niin täytynee turvautua korvaavaan. Mieleni ei osaa nähdä tuossa muun värisiä reunoja kuin mustat, koska kuvio on musta. Tässä pari kamerakännykkäkuvaa tekeleestä. Pitääkin muistaa ottaa kunnon kamera mukaan ensi kerralla. Mutta täytyy sanoa että tämän kanssa piti keskittyä oikein kunnolla kun samalla piti pitää huolta kavennuksista ja levennyksistä ja raidoista.

I had time to go to the machine knitting class for a change and managed to knit almost the whole back piece of the vest. It looks nice, the only problem is that I'm going to run out of yarn. This thing eats black so much that I only have enough for the front piece and not for the edges (sleeves, neck and bottom). So I have to get more or find a suitable replacement. The yarn in question is Knitpicks Gloss and they don't deliver here. So if I want to finish that during this class (3 times more) then I need to find a replacement. For my mind can't imagine the edges in any other colour than black since the black forms the image here. Here's a couple of not-so-good photos taken with the cellphone. I have to remember to take a better camera along next time. But I have to say that this took quite a lot of concentration for I had to focus on the increases and decreases and the colour changes at the same time.

Viikon henkilökohtainen katastrofi: olen hukannut Bainbridge-huivini. Luulisin kyllä että se on talossa mutta en ole vielä onnistunut paikallistamaan sitä. Ärsyttää suunnattomasti, voin sanoa.

Personal catastropy of the week: I've misplaced my Bainbridge Scarf. I think it's in the house somewhere but I've yet to locat it. Highly annoying.

Takaisin alkuun - Back to the beginning

Yritin ottaa parempia kuvia kirjoneulehihasta päivänvalossa siinä sen ihmeemmin onnistumatta. Punaisen ja vihreän yhdistelmä ei taida olla oikein paras mahdollinen, punainen korostuu liikaa ja vihreä jää aika haaleaksi vaikka sitä kuinka photoshoppailisi. Mutta kyllä tämä nyt paremmalta näyttää kuin se viimekertainen kuva, ei tule ihan niin 80-luku mieleen, vaikka vihreän pitäisikin olla enemmän kiiviä kuin miltä tässä näyttää.

I tried to take better photos of my fair-isle sleeve outside but I didn't have much luck. I think the combination of green and red is too much for my poor camera. The red is oversaturated and the green comes out as wishy-washy no matter how much I photoshop. Neulon tänään toisen hihan, sen yksivärisen. Sen jälkeen höyryttelin molemmat, siis valmiin hihan ja tekeillä olevan kirjoneulehihan. Ikävä kyllä asia ei siitä miksikään muuttunut vaikka käytinkin silitysrautaa aika rankasti. Se on liian tiukkaa, tuo kirjoneule siis. Eipä tule kaveria toiselle hihalle tästä, ei. Pakko on aloittaa uudestaan. En heittänyt edes kauheita itkupotkuraivareita kun huomasin asian koska olin sitä vähän uumoillut jo. Mittailin tiheyksiä ja totesin että ne eivät vastaa ohjetta mutta toiveikkaasti ajattelin että jälkikäsittely muuttaisi asiaa. Kyllähän se toimikin jonkin verran mutta ei tarpeeksi. Ja koska en kuitenkaan halua toista hihaa mallia makkarankuori niin on pakko aloittaa alusta. Neulekoneen hyväksikäyttö vaatisi aika tavalla uudelleenmuokkausta tuolle kiemuraraidalle, koska oma koneeni suoriutuu vain 24 silmukan leveistä kuvioista. Eli käsin siis on tehtävä, mutta nyt voisin tehdä hihan pyörönä niin ei tarvitse tehdä niitä nurjia kerroksia ennenkuin hihapyöriön kohdalla.

I knitted the other sleeve today, the all black one. After which I steamed both, the finished and the fair-isle sleeve. Sadly matters stayed the same even though I did use the iron quite enthusiastically. It is too tight, the fair-isle one that is. Not a good match for the other one. So I have to start again. I didn't even throw that much of a hissy fit after I discovered the truth for I had been fearing it for a while. I had been measuring the sleeve and it did seem a bit on the narrow and small side but I hopefully thought that steaming would do the trick. And it did help some but not enough. But I do not want a sleeve that is too tight and so back to the beginning it is. Can't even use the machine for I'd have to re-design a part of the pattern, my machine can only cope with patterns that are 24 stitches wide. So hand-knitting it is but now I think I'll make the sleeve in the round so I can avoid doing the purl rounds for as long as possible.

80-luku on täällä taas - The 80's are here again

Viime kerran kirjoneuleväripohdintaan tuli ihan kiitettävästi kommentteja. Kun päätin sunnuntaina ruveta neulomaan niin vaaka ei ollut kallistunut selvästi minkään vaihtoehdon suuntaan ja niinpä päätin vain neuloa jonkun. Arpa lankesi numero ykköseen koska aikani vaihtoehtoja tuijoteltuani tykästyin siihen. Tältä näyttää tähän asti. Ehkä tuo on kuitenkin aika ärhäkkä väriyhdistelmä mutta en nyt aio aloittaa uudestaan koska tähänkin asti pääseminen on vienyt aikaa. Itse asiassa tajusin että tämä on ensimmäinen kirjoneuleeni. Intarsiaa olen joskus tehnyt, mutta en varsinaista kirjoneuletta. Tein etukappaleen osasen mallitilkuksi mutta se pitää tehdä uusiksi koska kiristelin takalankoja hiukan turhan innokkaasti ja siinä on havaittavissa selvää kolmiuloitteisuutta, tämä sujuu jo paremmin. Korjaan, olen joskus nuorempana tehnyt neulatyynyn kirjoneuleena. Tein siihen käärmeen ja kiristelin takalangat kireiksi jolloin käärme jäi koholle. Täytyypä kaivaa joskus kotiin mennessä se esiin ja katsoa onko se niin hyvä kuin miksi sen muistan. Mielessäni se on äärettömän hieno ja idea kekseliäs.

I got quite a few comments on last time's colour choises. When I started knitting it was quite even with all the choises so I just chose one. I ended up with option one since I kind of liked that one best after looking at them for a while. I still think that maybe this combo is a bit, well, colourful but I'm not about to rip it. It has taken me a bit to get this far since this is my first fair-isle. I have done some intarsia before but not fair-isle. I swatched with the front piece but that I have to reknit since I knit it a bit too tight and there's noticeable 3d-effect on it. This looks way better though. Oh, wait, I have done some fair-isle before. When I was younger I did a needle cushion so that I knitted a fair-isle snake and pulled the yarns tight so that the snake rose from the background. I have to try to dig it out when I go visit my parents some time to see if it looks as good as I remember. In my memory it is superb and the idea very clever indeed.

The good people at Vogue Knitting sent me a magazine, again. The same holiday issue I received mid-September. It is of course nice not to be left without magazine. I hope Interweave Knits delivers promptly too. It remains to be seen.

Viikko ei ole ollut mitenkään kauhean hyvä tähän asti, toivottavasti loppuviikko on parempi. Alku oli ihan lupaava - maanantai-iltaan asti. Sitten kuulin että enoni oli kuollut, ihan yllättäen, äkkiseltään, juuripa maanantaina. Oli ollut ihan terve, mitä nyt vanhuudesta johtuvia kremppoja mutta ei mitään vakavaa. Ja vaikka hän oli karvan päälle 70 en osaa mieltää vanhaksi, koska isäni on hieman vanhempi eikä miltään ikälopulta tunnu kuitenkaan. Emme olleet mitenkään erityisen läheisiä, mutta näimme kuitenkin silloin tällöin. Onneksi kutsuin häihin. Sen jälkeen onkin sitten ollut enemmän ja vähemmän outo olo (ehkä enemmän kuitenkin). Niinpä päätin että tarvitsen Niina-aikaa ja pidän perjantain vapaata. Voisi vaikka lähteä shoppailemaan. Enpä muistakaan milloin viimeksi olisin tehnyt sitä.

The week hasn't been that good so far and I hope the rest will be better. It started quite ok - until Monday evening. Then I learned that my uncle had died quite suddenly that day. He had been quite ok, what with minor ills and ailments age brings but nothing serious. And even though he was a bit over 70 I do not consider him old since my dad is a couple of years older. We weren't particularly close, just normal relatives but I saw him somewhat regularly. Luckily I invited him to our wedding. After that I've been feeling more or less (perhaps more) odd. So I decided I need a bit me-time and I'm taking Friday off. I might go shopping. Can't remember the last time I did that.

Värileikkiä - Playing with colours

Aloittelin pari kertaa kirjoneulehihaa, mutta en oikein ollut tyytyväinen väreihin. Kun en ostanut lankoja tätä työtä varten, niin värimaailma on hiukan rajoitettu ja koska värit ovat aika...ärhäköitä, niin ei niitä nyt voi ihan miten tahansa sekoitella. Siispä leikiskelin hiukan photoshopin kanssa. Näissä värit ovat hiukan luonnollista vaisummat, mutta kyllä niistä idean saa. Ja muu osa puseroahan oli siis mustaa.

I started the fair-isle sleeve a couple of times but I was not happy with my colour combinations. Since I did not buy the yarn for this sweater in mind my choises are a bit limited and since the colours themselves are quite...feisty, they can't be combined every which way. So I played a bit with photoshop. In these pictures the colours are a bit dimmer than in real life but you get the idea. And the rest of the sweater is black.

Option 1: black background with magenta and teal stripes, contrast colour lime.

Kaikkia väriyhdistelmiä en kokeillut, koska neuloin pienet alut sekä limen että magentan kanssa ja totesin että en halua niitä kumpaakaan niin isoina pintoina näiden värien kanssa. Väriyhdistelmät eivät vain toimineet. En nyt suoraan osaa sanoa suosikkiani näistä. Ehkä tuo ykkönen...siinä ainakin sen limen ja magentan yhdistelmä olisi aika silmiinpistävä, mutta ei välttämättä paha. Mitä mieltä olette?

I did not try all the colour combinations because I knitted a bit with both lime and magenta as background colours and I came to the conclusion that I do not want those as such large colour areas with these colour choises. The combinations just didn't work. I can't tell my favourite from these. Maybe option 1...there the combination with lime and magenta is quite eye-catching but not necessarily in a bad way. What do you think?

Ja asiasta viidenteen...armas äitini oli tilannut minulle postimyyntiluettelon kuvaston. En ollut tiedosta kovinkaan mielissäni sillä olen onnistunut pääsemään suhteellisen hyvin eroon lähes kaikista kuvastoisa. Ja tämä kuulosti jo nimeltänsäkin epäilyttävältä, Klingel. Se kuulostaa epäilyttävästi saksalaiselta ja no, miten sen nyt sanoisi kauniisti, saksalaiset eivät kyllä ole tulleet kuuluisaksi trendikkäillä muotisuunnittelijoillaan. Nyt se sitten tuli. Ja erehdyin eilen selaamaan sen läpi. Ja sitä kauhua, mietin jo hetken pitäisikö kaivaa silmät lusikalla pois päästä ja pestä ne saippualla että saisi ne puhtaaksi. Keinokuitua...keinokuitua...kuminauhavyötäröllisiä housuja...glitteriä ja strasseja...rimpsuja ja brodeerattuja kukkasia...ja tietenkin, saksalaista alkuperää kun on, niin pakkohan siellä oli olla se talonpoikaistyylinen (dirndl) mekko. En kyllä ymmärrä yhtään mitä äitini ajatteli. Kuvasto jossa on enemmän kuin neljä sivua muotoilevia alusvaatteita ja missä ulkoilupukua kuvataan tyylikkääksi ja siinä on strasseja ei ehkä ensisilmäyksellä luulisi minun tyylisekseni. Rakastan äitiäni mutta välillä hiukan hänen ajatusmaailmansa ihmetyttää. Luulen että hän vieläkin on sitä mieltä että vaaleanpunainen on lempivärini.

And on another matter...my dear Mother had ordered me a mail-order catalogue. Well, I wasn't pleased about it to say the least since I've managed to get rid of almost all of them. And this sounded so suspicios to begin with, it's called Klingel. It sounded suspiciously German and let's face it, they're not known for their haute-couture. Now it came. And I made the mistake of looking through it yesterday. And the horror! I felt like I had to gauge my eyes out with a spoon and wash them with soap to get the images out. Polyester... and more polyester...glitter...lace...trousers with elastic waist and of course the oblicatory dirndl-style dress. I can't even imagine what my mom was thinking. A catalogue with more than four pages of body-forming underwear and where comfort is more important than style and where a sweat suit is depicted as stylish and has glittery bits on it, well, does it sound like me? I do love my mom but I sometimes wonder what she thinks. I think she's still of the opinion that I love pink.

Avokadot sen tekivät! - The avocados did it!

Kyllä, avokadot olivat syyllisiä kaikkeen. Sunnuntaina kävin päiväkävelyllä ja poimimassa lähikaupasta kaksi täydellistä avokadoa. Olisi pitänyt mokoma muistaa jo aiemmin, sieltä niitä on aikaisemminkin löytynyt, syömäkypsiä. Ja ei, en tietenkään kerro mikä se kauppa on, muuten te menisitte sinne sankoin joukoin ja ostaisitte kaikki enkä minä ensi kerralla löytäisi enää kuin niitä kivikovia. Mutta, sainpa sitten ruokaa ja nyt minulla on jo etu ja takakappaleet valmiina.

Yes, the avocados were to blame for everything. On Sunday I went for a little walk and picked up two perfect specimens from a nearby shop. Though I should have remembered that. I've got them from there before, ripe enough to eat. And no, of course I'm not going to tell which store it was. Since I didn't do that on the Finnish side I'm not going to do it here. They might go and buy them all and next time I'd only find the bad ones, the rock hard raw ones. But, I got my dinner and now I have both the front and the back pieces finished.

Ja olisi ehkä ollut vielä se hihakin, jollen olisi hämääntynyt Tusshenoiden kiillosta ja aloittanut jotain uutta. Ja lopettanut sen sitten myöhemmin. Ai miksikö? No siksi. Katsokaa itse, vinous ei ole optista harhaa. Ja sitäpaitsi tuo on aivan liian iso vaikka tein mallitilkun sileällä ja käytinpä vielä numeroa pienempiä puikkoja. Ei ole Tusshenasta pitsineuleeksi, ei.

And I might have had the one sleeve too but I got distracted by the lovely sheen of the Tusshenas and I started something new. And stopped doing that. Why, you ask? Well, take a look at the photo above. The dissimilar sides are not an optical illusion. Besides that is way too large even though I made a swatch and used a smaller needle size. It's not for Tusshena to become a lace sweater.

Aloittelin hieman kirjoneulehihaakin, ja totesin että tarvitsen pienemmät puikot (ja hieman vähemmän kissanhäntää, kiitos).

I even started a bit on the fair-isle sleeve but I discovered that I need smaller needles (and slightly less cat tail, thank you very much).

Mutta helpoimmin saatavilla olevat puikot sattuvat olemaan kiinni tässä. Tämä on tuleva Bainbridge-huivini ja lanka on salaisen ystäväni lahjoittamaa Zenstring Bambewe-lankaa. Päätin että se on aivan liian kaunista sukkiin ja nyt siitä on tulossa huivi. Kun tein mallitilkkua niin onnistuin vahingossa saamaan aivan täydellisen silmukkamäärän langan raidoitukseen nähden. Ah, se oli kaunis, siinä oli tummempaa toisessa reunassa ja punaista keskellä. Tyhmyyksissäni en sitten ottanut siitä kuvaa ja se oli pakko purkaa, koska se oli hiuviksi aivan liian kapea. Harmi sinänsä. Mutta puikot sauhuvat herkeämättömällä vauhdilla. Luulin että olisin saanut jo huomiseksi uuden pikkuhuivin kaulaa lämmittämään (koska ulkona on kylmä) mutta eipä tullut vielä. Ehkä sitten huomenna.

But the needles that were easiest to find were attached to this. And this is on its way of becoming a Bainbridge scarf. The yarn in question is the one I got from my Secret Pal, Zenstrings Bambewe. I decided it was way too pretty to become a pair of socks so now it will be a scarf. When I made a swatch I accidentally stumbled upon the most correct number of stitches for this colour sequence. It looked lovely, there was dark on one side and lighter on other but, alas, I did not take a photo of it and I had to rip it for it was way too narrow for a scarf. Pity, though. But needles are flying (don't know where, but hopefully somewhere warm since it's cold here) for I was hoping on being able to wear it tomorrow. But no, I could not manage to get it finished. Perhaps tomorrow.

Tuntuu sunnuntailta - It feels like Sunday

Jaa, että miksikö? No ehkäpä siksi että en ollut perjantaina töissä. Veli tuli torstaina käymään ja vietimme perjantaina jokusen tunnin koluten Helsingin divareita. Tällä kertaa ei löytynyt kivoja neulekirjoja, mutta jotain silti tarttui mukaan. Ostin minäkin sitten tuon Friday Night Knitting Club-kirjan, kun oli halvalla. Ja mukaan tarttui myös ensimmäinen kausi Babylon 5-sarjaa.

And why is that? Well, I think it's because I was not at work on Friday. My brother came over on Thursday and we spent some hours on Friday going through some of the second hand book stores in Helsinki. This time I did not find any nice knit books but I picked up a few things nonetheless. I got a copy of the Friday Night Knitting Club since it was in a good condition and cheap too, and I also found the first season of Babylon 5.

Torstain neulekonekursssilla tein mallitilkkua. Tarkoitus on tehdä V-kaulainen liivi jotain Eunnyn Deep V Argyle Vest -tyyliin, mutta ei kuitenkaan. Kuvitelkaa tämä kuvio kirjavalla pohjalla, ja pohjavärit ovat tästä langasta (Knitpicks Gloss) värit Concord Grape, Dusk ja Woodland Sage (oheisessa kuvassa pohjavärinä on viimeksimainittu). Ja mustalla leveä joustin kaula-aukkoon ja helmaan, kapeampi joustin kädentiehen. Ensi kerralla pääsee jo varmaan neulomaan, jei.

On Thursday's machine knitting class I did a swatch. I'm going to make a V-neck vest, something like Eunny's Deep V Argyle Vest but not quite. Picture this pattern in a randomly striped background of colours from this yarn (Knitpicks Gloss), colours Concord Grape, Dusk and Woodland Sage (the background colour in the above swatch is Sage). And a wide rib in black on the neck edge and hem, narrower one at the arm edges. Next week I'll get to the knitting part, yay.

Toisenlainen tiimalasi - Another kind of hourglass

Last minute knitted gifts - ja tiimalasipaita (hourglass sweater) on ollut aika suosittu jo pidempään. Mutta minullapa on ihan omat kurvit, vai mitäpä sanotte tästä? Omien mittojen mukaan suunniteltu kirjoneuletakki (vain hihat uupuu). Aika kurvit, siis.

Last minute knitted gifts - and hourglass sweater have been popular for quite some time. But I got my very own hourglass, or what do you say about this? Designed according to my own measurements - guess I'm not as thick as I thought.

And the pattern goes quite well at the seam too, not that it was planned at all. Yay me!

Nysväämistä - Tinkering

Minäkin sitten siirryin betan käyttäjäksi ja pitihän se templaatti tietysti heti päivittää. Päätin pitää saman ulkoasun, kun olen siihen tottunut, mutta tietysti kaikki blogirinkikoodit hävisivät pois. Eli vielä pitää säätää - ja kehyksetkin haluan kuviini. Eli jos tulee haamupäivityksiä seuraavina päivinä, niin ne johtuvat sitten siitä.

I switched over to beta also and of course I had to upgrade the template. I decided to keep the outlook the same since I've gotten used to it and it is quite ok but of course I lost all my blog ring codes. Need to figure out how to put the frames back to my photos too. So some more tinkering is needed and it will probably cause some phantom updates, just so you know.

Yesterday I managed to take some photos while there was still some light outside. So, more of the fair-isle cardi. It looks like the pattern calculations were spot on, it seems to be at the correct height on both the body and sleeve pieces. Right on!

Roguepalmikkoa, se kainalon alle tuleva. Mokoma on taas jäähyllä, kun lievä lämpö on pehmentänyt aivot ja onnistuin lukemaan yhden "at the same time"-kohdan ohi ja nyt pitäisi ehkä purkaa jokunen rivi tai tehdä kikka kolmonen. Ei jaksa...ja kurkkukin on kipeä (valivali).

Rogue cables, this time the one under the sleeves. The darn thing is on hold again since the slight temperature I have managed me to miss one "at the same time"-line and now I should rip three-four rows or think of something else. Too strenuous what with having a sore throat and all (whine).

Mutta lo, uutta lankaa on silti tullut tähänkin taloon. Hotpinkkiä hapsulankaa myöhempää käyttöä varten, lisää Schoppel-Wollen Samosta jotta voin jatkaa huivitusta ja neljä kerää OnLinen Solo-lankaa. Tämä pääsi nyt puikoille ja on muotoutumassa hörhöhuiviksi. Teen kymmenellä silmukalla ja ööö...3.5mm:n puikoilla ja silti jotenkin näyttää kapealta. HHhhhmm....

But lo, there's new yarn in the house. Hot pink eyelash yarn for later designs, more Schoppel-Wolle Samos so I can lengthen the scarfy a bit and four balls of OnLine Solo. That's already on the needles and about to become a frilly scarf. I'm using ten stiches and about 3.5 mm needles and it looks a bit narrow. Hhhhmm....

Kirjoneuletta - Fair-isle

Taisin luvata yrittää ottaa kuvaa kirjoneuletakin palasista päivänvalossa. No, eihän se onnistunut. Heräsin yhdeltä - eilen oli joulujuhlat, jotka olivat kivat ja Jean S. oli hauska mutta jalat ovat muusina - ja sitten tuijotin onnessani Dickensin Kolea talo-filmatisointia. Tykkään...ja seuraava osa tulee vasta maanantaina, äh! Ja sitten kello olikin jo liian pimeä. Mutta, tässä nyt kuitenkin takakappale hieman photoshopattuna. Värit ovat aika hyvät ja kuvio erottuu kauniisti. Hihat ovat siis samalla kuviolla ja tavoitteena olisi että tuo kirjoneuleraita olisi samalla korkeudella kaikissa paloissa sitten kun hihat ovat kiinni. Mutta lopullista kuvaa pitää odottaa vielä tovi, sillä etukappaleet puuttuvat ja kurssi jatkuu vasta 18.1.

I seem to remember promising to take photos of the fair-isle pieces during daylight. Well, that didn't work. I woke up at one - we had the company christmas party yesterday which was a lot of fun and dancing and boy are my feet sore today - and after that I spent a while looking happily at Dicken's Bleak House dramatization. And then suddenly the it was too dark o'clock. But anyway, presenting the back piece nicely photoshopped. The colours seem quite ok and the pattern can be seen clearly. The sleeves are done with the same pattern in similar fashion. The idea is that when the sleeves are attached the whole pattern stripe is at the same level throughout the cardi but you'll have to wait a bit to see how it turns out for the course starts again 18th of January and I'm missing the front pieces.
