Viime viikonloppuna - Last weekend

Nyt onnistuin olemaan ilmoittautumisaikana koneen ääressä ja pääsin mukaan neuleretriittiin. Kyseessä on järjestyksessä neljäs ja minulla toinen.

This time I managed to be on the web at the correct time and got to join the knitting retreat. This was the 4th of its kind and my second.

Koolla oli suunnilleen 50 naista ja ohjelmaan kuului kehräämistä, neulomista, syömistä, juomista, juttelua, nauramista, saunomista ja olipa pari työpajaakin tarjolla.

There was about 50 women and on the agenda was spinning, knitting, eating, drinking, talking, laughing, sauna and even a couple of workshops.

Itse en kehrännyt enkä ottanut osaa työpajoihin, muuta tuli kyllä tehtyä. Tässä toisen retriittineuleen langat: 100% merinoa Wollmeiselta, väreissä Petit Poison nr 5 ja Maus Alt.

I did not spin or take part in the workshops, everything else I did. Here's the colours of one of the two retreat knits I brought with me. The yarn is 100% merino from Wollmeise in colours Petit Poison nr 5 wd and Maus Alt.

Tässä toinen, Rhombus-sukat äidille. Lankana taas Wollmeise, nyt sukkalankasekoitusta, twiniä, värissä Türkis. Aloitukseen keksin kolmannen version ja tämäkin näyttää hyvältä.

This is the other and yarn is Wollmeise also but this time in twin and the colour is Türkis. The pattern is my own, Rhombus, and these will be for my Mom. I came up with a third version for the beginning and it looks good also.

Näin aika paljon erilaisia Reinoja sekä sisä- että ulkokenkinä ja mietin että sellaiset olisivat aika kätevät sisäkengät. Itselläni oli sisällä pelkät villasukat ja välillä tuntui pientä kylmyyttä jaloissa kun jostain veti. Ehkä vaaleansini-ruskeat olisivat kivat...



I saw a lot of Reino-shoes used both as outdoor and indoor wear (not at the same time of course) and I started thinking that maybe I should get a pair too. I used only woollen socks indoors and sometimes my feet felt a bit cold when there was a draft. I'm thinking maybe the ones with light blue and brown...

Lankakirpputorille en vienyt tälläkään kertaa myytävää enkä sieltä mitään ostanut, mutta muuten tuli ostoksia tehtyä. Tuulialla oli jokunen laatikko värjättyjä kuitutuotteita tarjolla ja pituudesta oli hyötyä tällä kertaa kun neulojalauma parveili myyntipöydän ympärillä. Ostinpa sitten silkkinessuja paketin. En edelleenkään kehrää, mutta näitä voi neuloa ihan suoraankin, sain opastusta. Ja ovat kuulemma nyt niin kovin muodikkaita joten kerrankin olen trendikäs.
Ai mitäkö niistä meinasin tehdä? Jonkun huivin varmaankin.

I did not take any yarn to the "for sale" table this time either nor did I pick anything up from there. However, I did buy some stuff. Tuulia had a box or three of her own dyeings for sale. My height was an advantage when a horde of knitters swarmed around the offerings. I picked up a packet of silk hankies. I still do not spin but I was told I could knit them straight from the hankies (I got a demonstration). And I was told they are also very in at the moment. It seems as though I'm very "in the moment" for once. Oh, what am I going to do with them? Probably a scarf.

Ikävästi sattui taas kellojen siirto retriittiviikonloppuun. Asiaa auttoi kyllä hieman se että emme huonekaverin kanssa menneet aamiaiselle kumpanakaan aamuna vaan nukuimme hieman pidempään. Olo on tällä hetkellä kyllä hieman vetämätön mokoman ajansiirtelypelleilyn vuoksi, mutta eiköhän se siitä tasaannu viimeistään ensi viikonloppuna.

Unfortunately the summer time time-shift happened during the retreat. It was not so bad this time since neither me nor my roommate went to breakfast on either morning but slept instead. I'm feeling a bit extra tired at the moment because of the whole time-stuff but I think I'll get back to normal during the weekend at the latest.

Se ajaa minut juomaan! - It drives me to drink!

Tänään oli taas yksi niitä päiviä. No niitä, jolloin tekisi mieli kirota viidenteen polveen kaikki sen jälkeläiset joka ikinä keksi opettaa minulle neulomista tai vaihtoehtosesti toimittaa itsensä hoitoon sen vuoksi että ikinä sai päähänsä tehdä mitään langasta. Päivä alkoi ihan tavallisesti...minulla oli koko kämppä itselläni (no, kissaa lukuunottamatta) ja tuijottelin Seasonstorelta tilaamaani pakettia. Sain vihdoinkin lisää mustaa Silanaa, jotta voisin tehdä jotain jo olemassaolevista langoistani ja sitten mukaan hyppäsi jotain muutakin. Punainen kerä on luksussukkalankaa (65% merinovillaa, 15% silkkiä, 16% polyamidia ja 4% kashmiria) ja viininpunainen on Tusshenaa (väri nimeltään - yllätys - tumma viininpunainen, dunkel weinrot).

Today was one of those days. You know, when you want to curse everybody and their uncle for introducing you to the idea of knitting and were seriously thinking of committing yourself for ever having entertained the idea of doing anything with yarn. The day began ordinarily enough. I had the whole flat to myself (well, except for the cat) and I was staring at my box from Seasonstore. I finally managed to get more black Silana so I could do something with the ones I already have and some other stuff too. The red yarn is new luxus sock yarn (65% merino, 15 % silk, 16 % polyamide, 4 % cashmire) and the lovely wine red yarn is Tusshena (funnily enough, called dunkel weinrot, dark bordeaux).

Muut Silanat ovat myös Seasonstorelta peräisin, joku aika sitten tilattuja. Koska mielessä ei ollut mitään erityistä, niin otinpa vain hieman mustaa ja sitten joitain yksittäisiä värejä. Mutta sitten tuli Vogue Knitting-lehden vuoden 2006 juhlanumero. Sieltä malli nimeltään vain 21 (ja numeroltaan myös). VK:n sivut näyttävät olevan alhaalla, joten en saa linkkiä kuvaan, mutta kyseessä on hieman erikoisempi kirjoneule. Muuten sileää mutta toinen hiha ja pala etukappaletta on kirjoneuletta. Onhan se kieltämättä erikoinen, mutta iski minuun kuin 1000 volttia. Ja ohjeeseen sopiva lankakin löytyi, juuri tämä mainittu Silena. Mutta ah, ja voi, sitä ei ollut tarpeeksi. Yksiväristä siis. Ja lanka oli ehditty sopivasti lopettaa tällä välin. Siinä sitten aikani murehdin kurjaa kohtaloani ja mietin muita käyttökohteita langalle kunnes Seasonstoreen ilmestyi lankaa uudestaan myyntiin, ja vielä halvennuksella. Nyt kun sitä siis oli, vihdoinkin, niin eikun töihin. Hommaa helpottamaan muistin että minullahan on neulekone, niin sillähän sujuu nopeasti ainakin sileät osuudet. Kirjoneuleen voisi sitten tehdä käsin, ehkä, tai sitten ei. Kaivelin muutkin langat esille.

The other Silanas are also from Seasonstore, ordered a while ago. But since I did not have anything in mind when I ordered them I just picked some balls of black and a few of the other colours. But then came the Vogue Knitting Holiday 2006 -issue. And the pattern called (and numbered) simply as 21. Their webpages seem to be under construction so I can't link to the photo but it's a bit different kind of fair-isle. Uni-coloured except for one sleeve and a part of the front. It is a bit odd, I'm the first to admit it, but it hit me like 1000 volts. And I had a suitable yarn to make it with too. But, alas, I did not have enough of the main yarn (black in this case) and Lana Grossa had discontinued the yarn already. So I just wallowed in my sorrow and tried to think another uses for the yarn. But then Seasonstore started to sell Silana again - and it was reduced too (last of the stock I think). So now I finally have it. And to make things even more nicer I remembered I had a knitting machine. I could use it to make at least the black pieces with and maybe do the fair-isle by hand. Or not.

Ensimmäinen ongelma - huono muoto. Tällaiset kerät näyttävät kauniilta kaupassa, mutta heti kun tuot ne kotiin niin ongelmat alkavat. Ne päästävät irti järkyttävät määrät lankakieppejä jos niitä edes katsoo vinosti. Ja koska neulekone pitää siisteistä keristä niin kävin töihin lankankerijäni kanssa. Kaikki meni hyvin kunnes se yksi yksilö ilmaantui. Kyllä, valitettavasti. Vietin yli tunnin selvitellen yhdestä kerästä aiheutunutta sotkuvyyhtiä. Ja olin varsin ärtynyt sen jälkeen. Niinpä nautin yhden siiderin. Tosin olisin mielestäni tarvinnut jotain paljon vahvempaa mutta a) minulla ei ollut mitään ja b) tarkoitus oli mennä punttisalille myöhemmin joka ei onnistuisi kohdan a) toteutuessa. Rupesin myös vahvasti inhoamaan langankerijääni. Se näyttää vaativan todella paljon huomiota jotta se ei rupea tekemään omituisia keriä. Mitä se silti teki. Paljon.

First problem - bad shape. That type of ball may look fine, when in the shop, but the minute you get it home it starts to disintegrate. It lets out huge clumps of yarn if you so much as look at it wrong. And since the machine likes neat yarn patties I made out to make them with my yarn winder. It all went just fine until the bad ball appeared. Yes, I spent more than an hour disentangling one ball. And boy, was I seriously peeved after that. So I had a cider to cool my nerves. I felt like I needed something stronger but a) I didn't have any and b) I had hopes of going to the gym later that day and with something stronger that would have been out of the question. I came to seriously dislike the yarn winder in the process too for it seemed to require an awful amount of looking after to keep it making neat balls insted of doing something odd. Which it still did. A lot.

Kun olin vihdoin saanut melkein kaikki langat siivoiksi lankakakkusiksi törmäsin seuraavaan ongelmaan. Koska mustat langat olivat eri tilauksista niin ne myös olivat eri värierää. Joten pidin ne kiltisti omissa laatikoissaan jotta en sekoittaisi niitä. Paitsi sekoitin. Luulin jossain vaiheessa tunkeneeni väärän langan väärään laatikkoon ja vaihdoin sen, mutta en ollut sittenkään. Paitsi nyt se sitten oli. Väärässä laatikossa. Silmä ei ollut avulias tänään joten yritin jopa kameraa avuksi. Kun joskus kamera on tarkempi kuin silmä. Paitsi ei nyt. Mutta joku voisi olettaa että koska en näe mitään eroa kuudessa kerässä niin ei sitä näkyisi neuleessakaan. Mutta se näkyy. Kuitenkin keskellä kappaletta. Mutta sille ei enää voi mitään, jotta olkoon.

After I had finally managed to get nearly all my yarns into neat little yarn cakes I came across another problem. Since the blacks were from two different orders they also came from two different dye lots. So I kept them in separate boxes to keep them separate. Except when I had done almost all of the balls I thought I had placed a wrong one in a wrong box so I switched it. At which point I noticed that I hadn't. But then I had. So now I have a box of six balls one of which is of different dye lot. And I can't figure out which. I even tried taking photos of the box for sometimes the camera can see things the eye can't. But here it didn't. I could assume that since I can't see any difference in the six I have that all would be well. I know better. It'll be visible all right. And in the middle of the piece probably. Not much I can do about it now, though.

Joten aloitin neulomisen. Käytin oranssin kerän tiheys- ja mallitilkkukokeisiin ja päädyin suunnilleen sopiviin asetuksiin ja aloitin neulomisen. Ja onnistuin sekoittamaan vähennykset lisäyksiin ja päädyin purkamaan aloitetun kappaleen. Tässä vaiheessa purkaman lanka päätti sekoittaa itsensä. Tässä vaiheessa, jos minulla olisi ollut ylimääräistä lankaa, olisin heittänyt mokoman kerän parvekkeelta alas ja ottanut seuraavan. Mutta kun ei ollut niin piti sitä selvitellä. Ja se takkuuntui taas. Oli siis aika vaihtaa maisemaa ja päädyin kauppaan. Olisin melelläni mennyt ensin salille mutta tässä vaiheessa oli jo sen verran myöhä että sinne piti mennä. Ja se oli täynnä idiootteja. Niitä, jotka tukkivat koko käytävän poikittaisilla kärryillään. Ja niitä, jotka kun on viattomasti valikoimassa hedelmiä niin parkkeeraavat valtamerilaivan kokoiset lastenvaunut selän taakse niin lähelle että kun kääntyy ympäri niin on vaarassa kompastua niihin. Onneksi en, koska muuten olisi varmasti saanut huudot että pahoinpitelen niiden armasta pilttiä. Tai jotain. Tunti punttisalilla poisti minut aggressioista mainiosti. Niin mainiosti, että kotiintultuani tein puseron etukappaleen valmiiksi. Kunnes huomasin että ostamani avokadot olivat sittenkin liian raakoja enkä saanut ruokaa. Hmph! Juon viiniä nyt. Ja kuka fiksu se oli joka sanoi että neulonta muka rentouttaa?

So I started with my knitting. I used the orange one for swatches and stettled on suitable settings. And got knitting. And managed to mix up decreases with increases and had to rip what I had knitted. At which point the yarn I had ripped managed to get itself all tangled up. Now, if I had yarn to spare I would have chucked the whole damn ball but I didn't. So I triend to untagle it and when it got into another tangle I gave up and went to buy food. I would have preferred to go to the gym first but at this point it was already so late that I had to hit the store first. Which was full of idiots. You know, those that block the whole aisle with their cart sideways. Or those that when you're picking some fruits park their huge suv of a baby carriage behind you so that when you turn you're in danger of falling all over the damn thing? Luckily I didn't, just, or I bet the parents would have yelled at me for attacking their precious baby. Or something. An hour at the gym made me much more mellow. So mellow that I finished the front piece of the sweater. But then I noticed that the avocados I bought were, in fact, too raw and I didn't get any dinner. Bah! Drinking wine now. Whoever thought that knitting is relaxing?

Put your hands up in the air

Hihoja on nyt kaksi. Unohdetaan nyt vielä vähäksi aikaa se, että toista hihaa pitää vielä purkaa hieman ja neuloa uudelleen ja ihastellaan kaksihihaista paitaa.

Now there are two, sleeves that is. Let's forget for a while that I still have to rip the other one back a bit and reknit and admire the two-sleeved sweater.

Onnistuin tiistain neuletapaamisessa päättelemään jo osan lankoja, joten nyt minulla on jo pari langanpäätöntä kohtaa hihassa. Ja kyllä, seurassa päättelykään ei tunnu niin vastenmieliseltä.

I even managed to weave in a couple of loose end on last Tuesday's knit meet. Now I have two neat areas in my sleeve without any unseemly hanging ends. And yes, finishing seems much nicer when done in company.

Koska minäkin liityin -10% projektiin, niin valmisteluja piti tehdä. Siksipä tilasin Kurkkupaikasta lopetettuja Jaegerin lankoja, tai siis vain yhtä lankaa, Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Chunkyä värissä Teal. Se on kaunis tumma petrooli. Käsituntuma ei ole yhtä ihanan pehmeä kuin jossain muissa merinoissa, mutta lanka tuntuu kuitenkin miellyttävältä ja siinä on hyvä kierre. Tässä palmikot varmaan erottuvat kauniisti mikä on hyvä koska niitä sen tulevaisuudessa tulee olemaan.

And since I joined the -10% project (10% off your weight, both stash and body) I had to make some preparations. Thusly, the cucumber place sent me a kilo of Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Chunky in Teal. A lovely dark colour. It is not as soft as some merinos I've encountered but it does have a lovely tight feel to it. I bet this shows off cables fabulously which is fortuitous for those it will encounter in the future.

Hidasta mutta etenee - Slow going

Raitapaidan hiha etenee. Vauhti ei kyllä päätä huimaa, mutta toisaalta tulosta syntyy raita kerrallaan, melkein huomaamatta kunhan malttaa vaan olla ajattelematta sitten niitä noin miljoonaa langanpäätä mitkä pitää sitten joskus päätellä. Siksipä onkin hyvä että pidän tuloksesta kyllä kovasti, tästä tulee kiva farkkupaita. En kyllä pidä hihojen neulomisesta pyörönä tähän suuntaan, sylissä möllöttävä paksu möntti kun ei edesauta sujuvaa neulomista. Ja tässä en tarkoita kissaa (joka ei kyllä ole paksu nykyisin ollenkaan enää) vaan sitä loppua paitaa.

The sleeve of the stripey sweater is progressing. The speed is not too great but it grows almost by itself, stripe by stripe if I just manage to keep my mind off the million or so yarn-ends that await weaving in in my future. It's a good thing that I like what it's becoming to, a good sweater to wear with jeans. I do not much care for knitting sleeves this way for the big lumpy thing in my lap hinders smooth knitting. And with that I do not mean the cat (which is not big at all anymore) but the rest of the sweater.

Neuleintoillessani olen unohtanut esitellä Ameriikan-tuliasiet. Keskellä möllöttää toinen parista, Mingiä Artfibersilta ja ympärille kääriytyvät Knitpicksin langat: Shimmer Stained Glass ja Glossia neljässä värissä. Glossin tulevaisuudessa odottaa kirjoneuleliivi, koneella neulottuna.

I noticed that I've forgotten to blog about my American yarns. Well, to correct that mistake, I present them here. In the middle is Ming from Artfibers and lounging around it are Knitpicks yarns, Shimmer in Stained Glass and Gloss in four colours. I see a fair-isle vest done with the machine in Gloss' future.

Ja viimeisenä synttärilahja. Uusi Ipod, 80-gigainen, nimeltään Erwin.

And last but not least, my birthday present, a new iPod. All 80 gbits of it. I named it Erwin.

Plaah!

Viimeaikoina on elo tuntunut kovin hankalalta ja raskaalta mielelläni nukkuisin 24h vuorokaudessa. Ilmeisesti se enteili tätä, sillä nyt olen kotona jo toista päivää lievän kuumeilun ja vatsakivun armoilla.

Viikonloppuna ehdin sentään tehdä jotain, vaikka sänky olisikin (ja olikin) ollut todella kutsuva. Lauantaina kävin Sadun, Marjutin ja Eevan kanssa Riihimäellä kirpputorilla. Lankaa oli...järkyttävän paljon. Marjutilla on enemmän kuvia, minä otin vain tämän yhden, järkytyin liikaa. Kyllä, melkein kaikissa laatikoissa ja säkeissä oli lankaa ja tuossa oli vain osa. Varastossa on kuulemma liikaa. Varoituksen sana kaikille lankahamstereille, ehkä kannattaa hankkia apua ennenkuin tilanne pääsee tällaiseksi?

Lately life has seemed so heavy and I'd love to sleep all 24 hours of the day. Apparently it was a prelude to this, me being at home with a slight fever and sore stomach second day in a row.

I did manage to do something besides sleep during the weekend though the bed did call me most ardently. On Saturday I visited a secondhand shop in Riihimäki with Satu, Marjut and Eeva. And there was yarn, lots of it. Marjut has more photos, I only tool this one for I was too shocked. And yes, almost all of the boxes and plastic bags contained yarn. There was even more in storage. A word of warning for all yarn hogs, might be a good idea to seek help before it gets this bad.

Ja eihän tässä vielä mitään hätää...mukaan lähti vain tämän verran. Itse ostin vain pussin pussilankaa, tuntematonta, pääosin jotain villansukuista, mutta se on vielä Sadulla saunakäsittelyn jäljiltä. Koiperhosia, niitäkin siis löytyi, munina ja kuolleina yksilöinä. Surullista oikeastaan, se määrä - kaikkea.

No worries here, yet. This was the amount that the four of us took with us. I only got a 800g bag of some unidentified yarn, mostly something wool-like but it's not here yet due to a sauna-treatment. For we did encounter some moths, in the form of dead adults and eggs. Sad, really, all that amount of stuff one person accumulated.

Sunnuntaina meistä tuli kummeja. Ystäväni oli taas kunnostunut leipomusten kanssa ja niitä riitti kotiinkin asti. Eikö olekin nätti?

On Sunday we became...guardians (I guess that is the best translation for non-religious godparents). My friend had had fun with baking and there was plenty on offer, I even brought home some. Isn't it pretty?

Vanhojen muistelua - Reminiscencing

Kone on nyt kunnossa ja kasattu, mutta ei sitä kuulemma saisi kuitenkaan kauheasti käyttää ennenkuin mies pääsee kurkkaamaan sisälle (tai jotain). Mutta sainpa nyt pari koneen uumenissa odottanutta kuvaa.

The machine is fixed now and I put it together and all but I'm not supposed to use it that much for some reason before the hubby has a chance to look inside it (or something). But I managed to upload a couple of photos that were lurking inside the machine.

Edinburghissa sattui sopivasti olemaan ale, ja John Lewis -tavaratalosta tarttui mukaan lankaa pariinkin otteeseen (ja pari ohjekirjasta myös). Ale...onko olemassa ihanampaa sanaa, lankakaupassa? Ehkä silkki? Näissä yhdistyivät parhaalla tavalla molemmat, 100% silkkiä 50% alennuksella. Mahdoton ohitettava. Kahdeksasta kerästä Debbie Blissin silkkilankaa saanee varmaan ainakin topin jollei boleroa. Asia on harkinnan alla, jahka lopetan vyyhtien paijaamisen.

It was a suitable time to be in Edinburgh (well, aside from the small terrorist matter) for there was a sale at John Lewis - among others. Reduced...is there a lovelier word to be seen in connection with yarn? Perhaps silk? Both were combined in a lovely way in the yarn above, 100% silk with 50% off. Impossible to pass. With eight skeins of Debbie Bliss silk I should be able to make something, a top at least if not a bolero. I'll be thinking about it after I finish petting the yarn.

Joku jäi kuitenkin vaivaamaan ja takaisin oli mentävä....ja lähdin pois uusien lankojen kanssa. Taas Debbie Blissiä ja silkkiä, nyt sekoitettuna puuvillan ja muiden kuitujen kanssa, Cathay siis. Alimmainen musta löytyi alelaarista ja värillisiä lähti normaalihinnalla pari kerää mukaan piristykseksi. Ja koska en ollut varma riittäisikö löytämäni musta mihinkään järkevään hihalliseen paitaan. Nyt pitäisi riittää.

Something was still bothering me and I had to go back...and I left with more yarn. Again Debbie Bliss and silk, now mixed with cotton and other fibres, Cathay that is. The black on the bottom was found in the sale bin and the normal priced colourful balls came along to brighten up the black and because I was not sure if the black they had was sufficient to make a sleeved sweater. Now it should work.

Kävin tarkastamassa toisen tavaratalonkin valikoimat (Jenners muistaakseni), mutta siellä ei ollut mitään kovin kiinnostavaa ja aleprosentitkin olivat valitettavan pieniä. Oikeaan lankakauppaan en päässyt, mutta eipä ollut kauheasti tarvettakaan. Ragamuffinin ikkunan takana kävin vilkuilemassa (siellä olisi kuulemma pitänyt olla Colinettea), mutta langat eivät osuneet silmään enkä sitten viitsinyt yrittää kauppaan sen aukioloaikana. Meillä kun ei kauheasti aikaa ollut.

Mitäpä muuta...linna tuli tietysti katseltua, viskiä maisteltua (kyllä, olemme jäseniä). Olisimme halunneet käydä myös Holyroodin palatsissa, mutta sinne ei päässyt koska kuningatar lomaili siellä (mokomakin). Teimme sitten puolipäiväretken Rosslynin kappeliin. Illastimme tyylillä ja söimme pitkän kaavan mukaan Martin Wishartilla. Tuo ei kyllä ollut ihan hintansa arvoinen, palvelu huononi selvästi kun paikka oli täynnä ja ruoka nyt ei niin erikoista ollut.

I went to check the yarn choises of another department store too (Jenners if I recall correctly) but they didn't have anything that interesting and the reduction percentages weren't that good either. I did not manage to go into a real yarn store, but I didn't really have the need to. I was at the Ragamuffin after the closing time and peered in through the window but didn't actually see any yarn so didn't go there (they were supposed to have some Colinette).

What else...we did visit the castle of course, did the whisky tasting (yes, we're members now). We would have liked to visit the Holyroodhouse palace too but they didn't let people in for the queen was there on holiday (hmph). So instead we went to check out the Rosslyn chapel. We dined in style and went to Martin Wishart. Can't really recommend that since it was not quite worth the price. The service got noticeably worse as the place filled up and the food was not that special.

Seuraavana päivänä takaisin tulomme jälkeen oli neuletapaaminen. Ja minun oli ihan pakko ostaa nämä langat pois kun niitä minulle tarjottiin. Sopivathan ne täydellisesti kynsiini!

The next day we got back I went to the Helsinki knit meet. I just had to buy these yarns when they were offered to me for they matched my nails perfectly!

Kesäyön lankaunelma - Midsummer night's yarn dream

Näin juhannuksen kunniaksi onkin hyvä tehdä katsaus uusiin lankoihin ja paljastaa kaikki mitä on jäänyt kertomatta. Ensimmäiseksi esittelen Tallinnasta mukaan tarttuneet ja viime kirjoituksesta unohtuneet ohuet Titan Woolin merinovillat. Tuota mustaa ajattelin Mystery Shawl 3:een (kyllä, liityin siihenkin, pitäisi muistaa nappi lisätä), mutta Midorin kokemuksia luettuani en ole enää ihan varma. Voisihan sitä tietysti sen mallitilkun tekaista ja katsoa sitten.

A good way to honour Midsummer is to have an overwiev of stash-additions that I've forgotten to mention. First, here's the Titan Wool's merino yarn that I got from Tallinn and forgot to post about. I had thought that I'd use the black one for Mystery Shawl 3 (yes, I joined that, must remember to put in the button too). But reading Midori's experiences with the yarn I'm not so sure anymore. I guess I could make the swatch and decide after.

Tässä toinen kandidaatti huivilangaksi. Colourmartin 100% silkkiä. Paksumpaa kuin edellinen ja ah, niin kaunista. Kyllä silkin kiilto on sitten hurmaavaa. Ja viime lauantaisen matkani ansiosta minulla on sopivan värisiä helmiä molempiin lankoihin. Nyt pitää vaan tehdä päätöksiä. Ja mallitilkkuja.

Here's the other possibility for the stole yarn. 100% silk from Colourmart. It's thicker than the merino and so pretty. I do like the shine silk has, it's very elegant. And thanks to my trip last Saturday I have suitable pearls for both yarns. Now I just have to make some decisions and swatches.

Sukkalankavarasto on myös lisääntynyt näillä kolmella kerällä Opalia. Vaikka omakohtaiset kokemukseni Martinan verkkokaupasta eivät olleet turhan mieltäylentäviä, niin osallistuin taas joukkotilaukseen. Se kun on niitä harvoja kauppoja joista saa Addin metallisia sukkapuikkoja pieniä välikokoja. Löytyihän niitä viime viikonloppuna Tallinnastakin, mutta enpä sitä silloin tiennyt kun tilaukseen osallistuin. No, tulivathan ne puikot viimein ja koska on turhaa tilata pelkkiä puikkoja niin nämä päätyivät kavereiksi. Pienin omistamani sukkapuikkosetti on tällä hetkellä 1.25 mm. Hulluuttako? Ehkä.

My sock yarn stash grew with these three balls of Opal yarn. Although my own experiences with Martina's web store were'n too positive, I decided to take part in a group order nonetheless. It happens to be one of the few stores that sell metallic Addi dpn's in small sizes. I did find them from Tallinn also but when this order was being thought of I didn't know about that. But, eventually the order did arrive and I got my needles and these yarns. The smalles set of dpns I currently own is 1.25 mm (0000 for US). Madness? Perhaps.

Sainpa minäkin ensimmäiset Jitterbugini. En hirveästi ihastunut täällä saatavilla oleviin kirjaviin lankoihin, ja sopivan tilaisuuden tullen osallistuin tilaukseen suoraan Colinettelta. Kaipasin niitä lähes yksivärisiä lankoja. Mutta huolimatta innokkaasta photoshoppauksesta vihreän ja violetin yhdistelmä ei tullut kunnolla esille ja olen liian laiska jaksaakseni nyt ottaa uutta kuvaa. Joten katsokaa edellä mainitusta linkistä (ja kuolatkaa). Värit ovat Velvet Olive ja Velvet Billberry. Vihreästä tulee Sockapalooza sukat.

I finally got my first Jitterbugs. I'm not too fond of the variegated colourways they offer here and once a suitable opportunity arose I got mine straight from Colinette. I liked their almost-solid colourways and that's what I got. But despite enthusiastic photoshopping the combination of green and violet proved to be too much and I was too lazy to take another photo in a more suitable setting. So view the forementioned link (and drool). The colours I have are Velvet Olive and Velvet Billberry. The green one will become socks for my Sockapalooza pal.

Ja jotta ei menisi ihan lankapornoksi niin tässä eilisen aleshoppailun tulosta. Omasta jalasta on edelleenkin vaikea ottaa kuvia, mutta eiköhän näistä idea tule selväksi. Näyttääkö malli tutulta?

Lauantaina tuli käytyä ja tarttuihan sieltä jotain mukaan. Pääasiassa menin katsastamaan puikko- ja tarvikevalikoimat ja ensin suuntasimmekin Karnaluks -tukkuun (Hermanni 1). Laivavuoro oli vain hieman huonosti valittu, koska Tallinnaan saavuimme 12:10 ja Karnaluks menee netin mukaan lauantaisin kiinni yhdeltä. No, nappasimme satamasta taksin ja kiidimme paikalle. Onneksi olin lukenut ohjeet ja printannut kuvan mukaan Kristiinan blogista, koska muuten oikean oven ja paikan löytäminen olisi voinut olla vaikeaa. Tosin taksikuskimme oli todella avulias. Mukaan tarttui Addin bambupyöröjä ja muuta sälää.

I did that on Saturday and picked up a few things. I mostly went to check the needle and knitting supplies market and first we went to Karnaluks shop which is a wholesaler but sells to ordinary customers too. We didn't do a very good job in picking the ship since ours got to Tallinn at ten past noon and the shop was said to close at one on Saturdays. So we stepped into a taxi that whisked us into Karnaluks in no time. There I picked up some Addi naturals and other stuff.

Jatkoimme matkaa (Marjutin blogissa reittikuvausta). Ja tarttuihan sitä minullekin jotain lankaa. Virolaista liukuvärjättyä villaa, sateenkaari ja musta-lila-sininen (goottikausi jatkuu). Sateenkaarivärjättyä himoitsin kun näin Kauni-takin. Idea on hauska ja tulos on kaunis, vaikka en olekaan laatikkomallin ylin ystävä, niin mieli teki heti soveltaa ideaa joksikin omemmaksi. Harmiksi vain poimimani villa taitaa olla hieman paksumpaa kuin tuo takissa käytetty. Huomasin itsekin että liukuvärjättyä näytti olevan kahtena paksuutena ja tuo sateenkaarivilla on juuri sitä hieman paksumpaa. Kaunissa on 400 m/100 g ja omassani näyttää olevan noin 300 g/100 m jos laskin oikein (165 tex x 2). Pitänee tehdä mallitilkku ja katsoa voiko tuosta langasta tehdä kirjoneuletekniikalla mitään vai tuleeko siitä niin paksua että siihen tikahtuu jo pelkästä katselemisesta. Yksi vaihtoehto on tietysti tilata jostain kestovaippakaupasta sateenkaarivärjättyä merinoa ja tehdä tuon tapainen siitä.

We rambled on (Marjut's blog gives out our itinerary) and I got some yarn too. Estonian variegated wool - in black-lilac-blue (my goth period continues) and rainbow-coloured. I saw the Kauni-cardigan and immediately wanted some rainbow-wool too. I don't care much for boxy designs but the idea was so good and the colours so lovely that I immediately wanted to adopt the technique and modify it to something a bit more form-fitting. The only trouble is that it seems that Kauni-yarn has 400 m/100 g and if I counted correctly mine gives 300 m/100 g (165 tex x 2) if I counted correctly. So it's slightly thicker. I noticed that this rainbow wool was thicker than for example the one on the picture but unfortunately they only had the rainbow-combo on the thicker one. I guess I'll have to do a swatch and see if it's possible to do anything resembling fair-isle with this yarn or if it's stifling just looking at it.

Ja kesäkorvikset. Huomasinpa juuri unohtaneeni kuvata yhdet langat - ostinpa minäkin ohuenohutta ja unelmanpehmeää merinovillaa parin huivin verran. Mustaa ja purppuraa. Tietysti.

And a pair of summer earrings. I just noticed I had forgotten to take a photo of my additional yarn purchases - I bought some dreamy soft and oh, so thin merino wool for a couple of scarves. Black and purple. Naturally.

Lämpohalvaus - A heat stroke

Jos vaihteeksi taas rupeaisi pitämään blogistakin huolta. Eipä vaan viime aikoina ole hirveästi tarmoa siihen riittänyt. Yksi syy on Ulla (ei vielä uutta, myöhemmin tänään) ja toinen on tämä (alla sisälukemat):

Time to start taking care of the blog again. It's just that I haven't had much energy for bloggin. One reason is Ulla (nope, not out yet, later today) and the other is above (indoor readings below).

Ei riitä älli ymmärtämään moista käytöstä. Kämppä on pohjakerroksessa ja siihen ei porota aurinkokaan koko päivää (aamulla kyllä jonkin aikaa), mutta silti se ei laske, lämpötila siis. Ennemminkin vain nousee. Yöllä nukkuminen on tuskaa ja tyynyä saa vaihtaa välillä kuivempaan. Voisin ratkaista energiakriisin myymällä asunnon ylijäämälämmön, kun se näyttää olevan aika ehtymätön luonnonvara.

I don't have enough brain matter to understand such behaviour. The flat is on the ground floor and it doesn't get that much direct sunlight (in the morning a couple of hours) but it still won't go down, the temperature that is. If anything it just goes up. Sleeping at night is a real pain and I wake up quite often to change the pillow for a drier one. I think I could solve the energy crisis by selling the excess heat from our flat since it seems to be quite renewable source of energy.

Mutta kaikesta valituksesta huolimatta olen neulonut aina jossain välissä. Ensimmäinen hiha Airinnia on nyt kainalovaiheessa. Ja bambupuikoilla langasta tulee todella paljon siistimpää pintaa.

But despite all the whining I have managed to knit some. The first sleeve of Airinn is at the arm-pit length. And the texture is much nicer with the bamboo needles.

Joten tässä on vartalo-osa nyt. Katselin aikani niitä epämääräisiä silmukoita ja ostin Addin bambupuikot ja palasin alkuun. Mikäs tässä, neuloessa.

So here is the body now. After eyeing the un-even surface for a while I bought a pair of Addi's bamboo circulars and started again. And nope, it does not even bother me at all.

Ja kun puikonostomatkalla piti katsella toiselle neulojalle lisää ale-puuvillaa, niin tarttuihan sitä itsellekin jotain mukaan alelaarista. Kaksi kerää efektilankaa. Petroolia glitteriä paljeteilla ja mustaa valkoisilla helmillä. Metrimäärästä ei mitään tietoa, mutta luulisin tuota riittävän jotain koristamaan. Paljetteja huiviin ja musta-valkoista ehkä sormikkaisiin tai rannekkeisiin. Huomattavasti halvempaa kuin Tilli Tomas.

And since I had to look for more discount cotton for another knitter, I grabbed something for myself too from the discount bins. Two small balls of efect yarn. Petrol glitter with sequins and black thread with white pearls. I have no idea of the meter count but looking at how thin it is I guess there's enough to adorn something. The sequins for maybe a scarf and pearls for a pair of gloves or mittens. Considerably cheaper than Tilli Tomas.

Vähän kaikkea - A bit of everything

Koska en onnistunut tuomaan Venetsiasta lankaa niin korvasin sen puutteen ostamalla perjantaiselta Tallinnan reissulta nämä kolme kerää. Suosittelen muuten Tallinkin järjestämään Tallinna-kiertoajelua. Ainakin meidän oppaallamme oli hyvin selvät mielipiteet asioista. Parasta viihdettä aikohin.

Because I did not manage to get any yarn from Venice I corrected that mistake by getting these yarns from my trip to Tallinn on Friday. I do recommend the Tallink Tallinn tour, at least our guide had very particular opinions on matters. Best entertainment in a while.

Aloitin myös uutta neuletta vaikka kesken on ties mitä. Mutta tämä on tilaustyö, ja se pitäisi saada valmiiksi kesäkuun loppuun mennessä. Jotta ei tule ihan kiire, niin parempi aloittaa ajoissa. Tehtynä on nyt vajaat puoli metriä, joten ihan hyvin tässä menee. En edelleenkään kyllä pidä mohairlangoista. Mokoma karvaa aivan hirveästi ja paksuilla puikoilla reikäneuleen tekeminen ei sekään ihan miellyttävää ole. Mutta helppoa ainakin.

Even though I have so many things on the needles I still started a new one. But this is for someone else and has to be finished by the end of July so I thought I'd start early to avoid panic. I've finished now a couple of cm short of half a meter so all's well. Mohair is still not one of my favourite yarns since this sheds like crazy. And 9mm needles and holey pattern do not a very happy Niina make. But at least it's easy.

...enkä ole ostanut aikoihin mitään (jos ei lasketa sitä noin 1.3 kiloa Novitan Oliviaa joka on eksynyt tänne) ...niin joskushan sitä on pakko repsahtaa. Sukkalankohin vaikka. Kuvassa Zitronin Trekking Pro Natura (bambua ja villaa) alimmaisena ja sen päällä punasävuinen Regian Bamboo (bambua ja puuvillaa) ja vihersävyinen Hjertesock (ihan normaalia sukkalankaa).

...and I haven't bought any yarn in ages (if one does not count the 1.3 kilos of Novita Olivia that has found its way here)...one is bound to crack at some point. Sock yarn did it this time. At the bottom is Zitron's Trekking Pro Natura (bamboo and wool), on the right is reddish Regia bamboo (bamboo and cotton) and on the left Hjertesock (just plain sock yarn).
