Ravelryvaihto - Ravelry exchange

Suomalaisten neulojien Ravelry-vaihto on meneillään ja minäkin olen siinä. Sain sähköpostitse seurantanumeron jo viime keskiviikkona, mutta paketti kotiutui minulle vasta perjantaina. Sisältä löytyi kaikkea kivaa. Nippu ohjeita, suklaata (syöty jo kaikki, hyvää oli), teekukkia, kauniisti paketoituja pehmeitä paketteja (palkeenkieli johtui omasta peukalosta) ja kirje vihjeellä.

The Ravelry swap of Finnish knitters is going on and I'm taking part in it too. I got the tracking code for the package from my pal last Wednesday but I got the package home on Friday evening. There were all kinds of goodies inside: some patterns, chocolate (ate all already, they were good), tea flowers, cute wrapped packages (the hole was made by my clumsy fingers) and a letter with hints.

Paketeistä löytyi lankaa, kolme kerää Novitan Luxus Cottonia luonnonvalkeana ja kolme vyyhtiä Shibuiknitsin sukkalankaa väriä Peony. Cotton tuntuu mukavalle ja Peonyn väri on todella kaunis. Mukana tulleet ohjeet ovat sellaisia jotka sopisivat tuolle langalle. Katsotaan nyt mitä syntyy. Ehkä voisin tehdä vaikka...sukat! Kiitoksia Heidis!

And inside the packets I found yarn. Three balls of Novita Luxus Cotton and three skeins of ShibuiKnits sock in Peony. The cotton yarn feels really nice and so does the Shibui sock. Peony is such a lovely colour. The patterns I got in the package are such that I could make them with this yarn. It is really nice and maybe I could do...well, socks! Thank you very much, Heidis!

Ufojen selätystä - Dealing with the ufos

Viime viikko oli aika rankka, ja tänään en jaksanutkaan tehdä muuta kuin tuijottaa digiboksilta ohjelmia ja käsitellä ufoja. Ensimmäisenä vanhin: Rosemoor. Sain tämän jo vuosi sitten keväällä melkein valmiiksi, mutta siihen se jäi. Yksi syy hitailuun oli siinä, että pelkäsin langan loppuvan kesken reunuksen neulomista. Sain kyllä reunuksen juuri ja juuri neulottua mutta kietaisunauhoiksi ostin mustaa samettinauhaa kun lankaa ei vaan enää ole. Seuraavaksi pitää vielä päätellä jokunen langanpää ja kiinnittää se nauha. Ehkä tätä voisi vielä pitää tänä talvena?

Last week was quite taxing and I haven't had energy to do anything else today than look at stuff from the digibox hard drive and tackle with ufos. The oldest one first: Rosemoor. I got this almost finished last spring but I was stuck with knitting the edge piece. I was afraid that I'd run out of yarn and not be able to finish the cardi. Well, I had enough yarn to knit the cabled edging, just, but there was no yarn left to do the wrap ties. I solved that by bying some black velvet ribbon that should do the trick. Now I have to weave in a few ends and sew on the tie and its finally done. Maybe I get a chance to wear it this winter at least once.

Seuraavana on vuorossa työ syksyn neulekonekurssilta: ohut yksinkertainen kashmirpaita. Ohut tarkoittaa myös paljon saumanompeluita, ja se onkin ollut mukana jokusessa neuletapaamisessa. Seurassa saumojen ompelu on mukavampaa. Malli on kovin yksinkertainen, v-aukko, 3/4-hihat ja pientä pintaneuletta. Lankaa oli vain kartion verran (n. 150 g) joten kikkailuun ei ollut kauheasti varaa mutta halusin jotain muuta kuin pelkkää sileää. Päädyin tähän yksinkertaiseen mallineuleeseen jossa kuviopuoli muodostuu nurjalle puolelle. Tämä aiheuttaa sen että reunat rullautuvat sisään päin. Kaula-aukkoon ja helmaan tulee erillinen kaitale, joka rullautuu ulospäin ja reunoista pitäisi tulla siistit. Kaula-aukon reunuksen ompelu on meneillään.

Next I have the piece I made last autumn at the knitting machine class. A very simple thin cashmere sweater. Thin means also lots of seaming so I've sown it together at knit meets. It's nicer to do when there's company for talking I can do at the same time but not tv. The style is very simple for I had only one cone (~150 g) of yarn and I couldn't do complicated or I'd run out of yarn. But I wanted something else than just stockinette stitch so I chose this tuck stitch pattern where the right side is the wrong side (sort of). This causes the edges to roll inwards. So I'm going to attach edges to the neck and hem that roll outwards and this should in theory make the edges nice and neat. I'm sewing in the neck edging now.

Puserossa on hihatkin mutta ne eivät vielä ole kiinni. Kiinnityksen jälkeen pusero kaipaa kunnon pesua, koska Colourmartin langat ovat teollisia ja siksi öljyttyjä. Pesu tuo kashmirin pehmeyden oikeuksiinsa ja jahka hieman lämpenee uskon nauttivani viininpunaisesta unelmastani.

The sweater has sleeves too but they are not yet attached. After I've done that the sweater needs a good wash for Colourmart's yarns are industrial and oiled. Washing brings out the softness and after it warms up a bit I believe I'll really enjoy my wine-coloured softness.

Kävin eilen kaupungilla ja myös Menitassa enkä ostanut sieltä yhtään lankaa. Mutta toisaalta ehkä vähän... Stockmannilta mukaan tarttui 10 kerää Rowanin Lenpur Linen-lankaa. Väri on kaunis tumma vedensininen, nimeltä Lagoon. Olen ilmiselvästi sinisessä vaiheessa.

I went to the city yesterday and also to a yarn shop and came out without buying anything. However, I did not come home without yarn for I got these from Stockmann. 10 balls of Rowan Lenpur linen. Lovely blue shade called Lagoon. I'm apparently well into a blue phase.

Värikästä viikonloppua - A colourfur weekend

En mennyt Wanhan sataman Kädentaitomessuille viime viikonloppuna, koska lanka löytää tänne muutenkin. Ensin tänne saapuivat jenkeistä tilaamani Noro Kureyon Sock-langat. Lupasin tehdä liivin myös kummilleni ja kun totesin että 200 g lankaa riitti täpärästi äitini liiviin niin sitä ei ole tarpeeksi pidempään ja löysempään versioon. Kummini on kova pinkin ystävä joten tästä saatiin aika win-win tilanne aikaiseksi: pidän itse kummini ostaman langan (samaa kuin mitä äidin liivissä, aika minun värejä myös) ja tilasin kummille pinkkiä. Tämän pitäisi riittää liiviin, toivottavasti. Väri on nimittäin lopetettu ja lisää voi olla hankala saada.

I did not go to the craft fair in Helsinki last weekend for the yarn seems to find its way here quite well. First I got the Noro Kureyon Sock yarns I ordered from the States. I promised to make a vest for my god-mother too and when I discovered that 200 g makes one that fits my mom it is not enough for a longer and looser version. So, I had to get more yarn. And since my god-mother is a big fan of pink this resulted in a win-win situation for both of us: I will keep the yarn she got for the vest (two balls of the same yarn as my mom, which I like too) and I will order more in a pink colourway. This should be enough. And this colour seems to be discontinued too.

Sitten lähti neulojatuttuja Tallinnaan. Kaukotilasin lankaa...kun se on niin kaunista petroolia paksuhkoa alpakkaa. Hassusti ihan samaa väriä kuin Dropsin Alpacassa. Tein siitä kietaisutakin muinoin.

Then some knit-friends went to Tallinn and I asked for some yarn. For it is such a lovely colour and a bit thicker alpaca yarn. Funnily enough it's the exact same colour as in Drops Alpaca. I made a wrap-around cardi from it a while back.

Sitten tuli hieno kukka, eikun lankakimppu. Olen jo jonkin aikaa silmäillyt Scarf Style-kirjassa olevaa Color on Color-huivia. Siinä on minuun mukavasti vetoavaa hauskuutta ja epäsymmetriaa. Mutta ei huvittanut ostaa miljoonaa (tai melkein) tokkaa kirjoneulelankaa ja riipiä siitä säikeitä erikseen (kirjassa käsketään erottamaan kolmisäikeisestä langasta kaksi ja neulomaan niillä). Puhumattakaan siitä pääteltävien langanpäiden määrästä. Niinpä se on jäänyt, kunnes Ravelryn suosiollisella avustuksella selvisi että suunnittelija Kathryn Alexander myy huiviin lankapaketteja. Pistinkin kyselyn menemään ja tiedustelin myös mahdollisista värivaihtoehdoista. Huivin karkkivärimaailma kun ei ole oikein minua. Vaikka hän ei normaalisti teekään custom-kittejä niin hän tarjoutui tekemään minulle oman sekoituksen. Olen oikein tyytyväinen saamiini väreihin. Niihin kaikkiin 50+ kappaleeseen. Harmi kun en pääse heti huivin kimppuun, ensi pitää saada valmiiksi pari kanootteja sukkia miehelle.

I have had my eye on the Color on color scarf from Scarf Style for a while now. It has that kind of funny asymmetry that appeals to me. But buying zillion (well, almost) small skeins of tapestry wool and ripping apart the plies and knitting with two of them however did not. Not to mention all the ends to be woven in. So it has remained to be just a nice thing but with the aid of Ravelry I learned that the designer, Kathryn Alexander sells yarn kits for the scarf. So, I sent her email inquiring about possible colours - for the candy-like colours of the scarf in the book are not really me. She doesn't normally do custom dyes but she offered to tweak the kit more to my colours. And this is what I got. I'm more than pleased with the colours I got, all 50+ of them. Too bad I can't get right down to knitting it for I have to finish a pair of canoes socks for my husband.

Olen neulonut myös neuletakkia Garnstudion ohjeella. Se on nyt kyllä vähän tauolla.

I've also knit a cable cardi from a Garnstudio pattern. It's taking a bit of a break now though.

Sekin vielä - And then some

Vietin viime viikonloppuna kolme päivää Kotkassa vanhempien luona. Äitini oli jo pidemmän aikaa vihjaillut siitä kuinka hän tarvii uusia huonekaluja ja jonkun mukaan niitä etsimään. No, kukahan muukaan se olisi ollut kun veljestä ei kuulemma ollut mitään apua silloin kerran kun he kävivät katselemassa.

Torstaina meillä pakattiin näin. Tai yritettiin, mun kassi kun oli jotenkin niin erinomaisessa paikassa laserpisteen jahtaamista varten. Pakkaa siinä nyt sitten jotain.

I spent three days last weekend with my parents in Kotka. My Mother had hinted (or a bit more than just hinted) about her need for new living room furniture and the need for someone to go look for them with her. And who could that be since my brother apparently was no help at all when they went looking that one time.

Well, on Thursday I packed. Or tried to, since obviously my bag was in a really good place to hunt the red dot in. Not very handy packing when there's a furry lump already inside the bag.

Sain lopulta pakattua ja huonekalut saatiin ostettua. Sain jotakin myös valmiiksi. Kas tässä, äidilleni liivi Noron sukkalangasta. Siitä tuli todella sievä vaikka lanka olikin saatanasta. Itsensä kanssa kiertyminen ei tee siitä mitenkään mukavaa neulottavaa. Liivi on neulottu muuten koneella, mutta resoriosat käsin. En uskaltanut ruveta taiteilemaan hankalan langan ja alatason kanssa. Joustimen teko on muutenkin välillä hieman haastavaa. Mutta meni se näinkin.

I finished packing and we bought nice furniture. I finished something too. Here's a Noro vest I made for my Mother. It came out really nice even thought the yarn itself could use some exorcising. Its tendency to curl around itself made it quite hellish to knit. The body of the vest is knitted with a machine but I did the ribbing by hand. I did not want to try the yarn with the ribber for it can sometimes be a bit challenging even with the best of yarns.

Tässä kuva ilman poseerausta. Lankaa meni lähes kaikki 200 g mitä olin siihen varannut. Yli jäi pari pientä nöttöstä. Kiertymistaipumuksesta huolimatta valmiissa neuleessa ei näy pahemmin kiertymistä. Tämä nyt asettui valitettavasti hieman huonosti kun joustinreunoja ei ole höyrytetty ajanpuutteen vuoksi. Viimeiset langanpäät tuli pääteltyä nimittäin noin puolisen tuntia ennen kuin bussi takaisin pääkaupunkiseudulle lähti.

Here's a photo without posing. I spent almost all of the yarn I had for this, 200 g that is. I had a couple of small balls left over. Even though the yarn liked to curl around itself quite badly there's not really any bias in the finished product. It does look a bit wonky around the collar in the photo but that's because I did not have time to steam the ribbing. For I wove in the last ends about half an hour before my bus back to Helsinki-region left.

Viikonloppu oli suurelta osin onnistunut, mutta pari harmittavaa sattumusta tapahtui. Onnistuin hukkaamaan New Yorkista ostamani Bobbi Brownin värillisen huulirasvan. Ja sitä ei tietenkään saa Suomesta, hmph. Joten jos joku törmää ulkomaanmatkallaa ko. merkkiin niin minulle voi tuoda tuliaisiksi Bobbi Brown tinted lip balmin sävyä Pink Raspberry.

Sain joululahjaksi pienen lasipullossa olevan kasvin, jonka kai pitäisi elää geelissä tooosi pitkä aika. No, tässä nyt ei tullut vastaan elinaika vaan Niina. Ilmeisesti ko. yksilö ei tykännyt matkata puhelimeni mukana vaan rupesi lotkottamaan epäsiististi astiansa pohjalla. Lisäksi yksi kolmihaaraisen kaktuksenpalasen haaroista sojottaa epäilyttävän näköisesti toiseen suuntaan. Ei tullut kovin pitkäkestoinen kännykkäkoriste tästä, ei. Tosin ei epäilytä yhtään, tällä huonekasvien hoitotehokkuudella. On meillä sentään kolme vielä elossa, joista yksi on kaktus.

The weekend was all in all quite a success though there were a couple of mishaps. First, I managed to loose my Bobbi Brown lipbalm I got from New York. I haven't used it that much and I really liked the colour so I'm a bit miffed. And of course I can't get it from Finland or in the vicinity. So, if anyone is travelling anywhere where they sell them a Bobbi Brown Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Raspberry would make me happy.

Second, I got this small piece of some cactus-like plant in a glass jar as a christmas present. It was supposed to live for a long time and make a nice cell phone charm. Obviously they hadn't thought of me when they suggested such thing for it was not the natural order of things that did away with this plant but me. Though, in my defence I have to say that I did not mean to do it. But there it is, the little plant is no longer upright and one of its three prongs is pointin in a weird direction. A sad, sad end.

Pääskyjä ja pellavaa - Swallows and linen

Lupasin lisäkuvia Swallowtailista. Kas tässä, komeasti stailattuna ja ympäristö huolellisesti valiten - eli parvekkeelle heitettynä, kuvassa näkyy myös kissan paonestomekanismi.

I promised outside photos of the Swallowtail Shawl. Here you go. Fabulously styled and in a carefully selected environment - on our balcony that is. In this photo you can also see the cat-proofing device.

Ja lisää. Tuosta tuli aika mukavan kokoinen: n. 140 x 70 cm. Neuloin puikoilla 4 mm ja lankaa meni 70 g.

And here's another. It has quite a nice size: about 140 cm x 70 cm. I knit it with 4 mm needles and ended up using 70 g of yarn.

Käväisin kanssaneulojan kanssa länsinaapurissa ja vierailimme kenkäkauppojen lisäksi myös lankakaupoista. Yllet ei ollut listalla, vaan osui matkanvarrelle ihan sattumalta, mutta tottahan siellä piti poiketa.

I did a small trip and visited our western neigbour with a fellow knitter. We visited some shoe stores and yarn stores. Yllet was not on our list but we came across it quite by accident. And what kind of knitters would we be if we didn't visit a yarn store that was there?

Olin ihan tyytyväinen poikkeamiseen ja tulin ulos näin sievän kassin kanssa.

I was quite happy with our visit and came out with this cute bag.

Ja viiden haasteellisen lankakerän kanssa. Haasteellisia siksi, että en näytä saavan kaunista petroolia toistumaan kuvissa oikeana. Mutta jotain tällaista se on, hieman vihreämpää vain luonnossa. Ai mikä siis? No Ylletin Lin-pellavalanka, 100% pellavaa, väriä 53 , petrooli (nettikaupassa tuota kutsutaan turkoosiksi).

And with five challenging skeins of yarn. Challenging because I don't seem to be able to get the lovely greenish blue colour of it to come true on the photos. Here's the closest one I was able to get though in reality it is a bit more greener. This being Yllet Lin-yarn, 100% linen in colour 53. I call it petrol but the web-site calls it turquoise.

Valoa pimeydessä - A light in the darkness

Swallowtail on nyt tässä, valmiina ja pingoituksessa. Löysin neulekonekurssin ohjaajalta passelia ohutta puuvillalankaa jonka sain lainaksi huivin lopettamista varten. Tuo sopiikin reunaan ihan hyvin kun se on hieman kovempaa kuin muu lanka - kestänee siis myös paremmin kulutusta. Väri on sen verran hyvä että ei ainakaan iltavalaistuksessa eroa huomaa. Viikonloppuna yritän ottaa ulkokuvia, niistä näkee sitten tarkemmin. Mutta toivottavasti tuo kohta matkaa jo eteenpäin kohteelleen.

Swallowtail Shawl is here, ready and blocking. My machine knitting class teacher had a suitable thin cotton yarn that she lent me so I could do the missing edge rows. The yarn was quite good here for it is a bit harder than the rest of the yarn and should do very well on the edge since it's a bit durable. The colour is so close to the original that I can't see the difference in evening light. I'll try to take some photos outside this weekend so then we'll see how it is in natural light. But hopefully I'll get this scarf to its intended recipient soon.

Icarus odottaa vielä paria viimeistä kerrostaan, mutta nyt minulla on lankaa niiden tekemiseen. Väri ei ole ihan sama, mutta mitäpä sitä nyt käsinvärjätystä langasta muuta voi odottaakaan...onpa kuitenkin samaa lankaa ja samaa värimaailmaa.

Tällä välin olen puuhastellut myös muuta, neulonut koneella pitkästä aikaa. Lanka on kyllä kauniin väristä mutta ei herätä hirveästi intohimoja neulomisvaiheessa. Ja miksikö ei? No, eiköhän tämä kuva sen kerro. Mokoma kiertyy itsensä ympäri hillittömällä innolla ja piti olla aika tarkka ettei kiemuramöttöjä päätynyt neuleeseen mukaan.

Icarus is still waiting for its final two rounds. But I have the yarn to do it. Though the colour is not quite the same - what's to be expected with handpainted yarn - but close enough and it is the same yarn.

In the mean time I've done a bit of machine knitting. The colours in the yarn are really lovely but the yarn itself doesn't really do it for me. And why not - well, I think the photo above says it all. The damned thing twists around itself like crazy and I had to be really careful not to get any unseemly twisty lumps inside the knit too.

Moinen kiemuruisuus ei myöskään lupaa hyvää kappaleen suoruudelle. Ihme kyllä valmiissa kappaleessa ei ole sanottavammin vinoutta. Juu, huomasin että kuvassa näyttää siltä mutta tuo johtuu ihan asettelusta. Tässä on takakappale äidin liivistä ja lanka on Kureyon Sock. Nyt puuttuu enää etukappale ja reunukset, eli melkein valmis! Ja onnea - pääsen tekemään liivin myös kummitädille...

Such twistyness does not promise good in regards of the bias. Wonder of wonders, there's not much of it in the finished product. Yes, I know it does look a bit as it does when looking at the photo but that is due to how I placed the piece than in real bias. You are looking at the back piece of my Mother's vest made out of Kureyon Sock. Now I only need the front piece and the edges. So it's practically done already! And oh, joy, I get to do one for my godmother using the same yarn...

Joo, tein sen taas - Yes, I did it yet another time

Pompuloita tehty. En nyt ole ihan samaa mieltä niiiden kammottavuudesta kuin moni muu, mutta täytyy myöntää että ensimmäinen nyppyrivi oli aika vääntöä, kunnes opin löysentämään langankiertoja tarpeeksi. Sieviähän nuo ovat, näin pieninä. Mutta, lanka loppui - ihme (not). Yritin käyttää välttelytaktiikkaa: jos en näe paljonko lankaa on jäljellä, niin se varmaan riittää loppuun asti. No ei ihan toiminut, sain tehtyä nelisen riviä reunakuviota ennenkuin oli pakko luovuttaa. Mutta Guatemalaan en meinaa lähteä langan perään, enkä purkaa, vaan pitää ostaa jotain sopivaa pehmeää ohutta puuvillalankaa jota voisi reunaan laittaa.

I've done some nupps. I don't think that they are as horrible as some people think but I have to say that the first line of nupps wasn't that easy. After that I learned to loosen my yo's enough to make the nupp-knitting much easier. They're quite cute actually, when they are that small. But, I ran out of yarn again - surprisingly (not). I tired the avoidance technique, you know, avoid looking at the yarn so you don't know how much is left and then you'll have enough? Sadly, it didn't work and I got about halfway on the edge lace pattern before I had to face the facts. But, I won't go to Guatemala to find more yarn nor will I rip. Instead I'll try to find some thin, soft cotton yarn I can use to make the edge with.

Hyviä uutisia Icaruksen kohdalla, löysin Ravelryn kautta ihmisen joka ystävällisesti luovuttaa käyttööni lopun vyyhdistään jotta saan ne pari hassua riviä tehtyä. Mutta tämän jälkeen voisin pitää hiukan taukoa huiveista.

But good news on the Icarus, I found a kind person through Ravelry who is sending me her left-overs so I can finish the scarf. Ravelry is the best. But I think that since my knitting karma hasn't been so great lately that I think I'll give the shawl-knitting a break.

Se tuli meillekin, Furminaattori. Ensimmäisellä kokeilukerralla irtosi ihan hyvänlainen pallo karvaa kuten kuvasta näkyy.

It arrived here too, the Furminator. The first try resulted in quite a big ball of fur.

The f-word

Tekisi mieli, hieman (tai vähän enemmänkin) kiroilla nyt. Ai miksikö? No siksi...mikään ei oikein mene neuleputkeen nyt.

I would like to, a bit (or actually more than a bit) curse here. Why? Well, because the knitting is not going my way now.

Cadenza-takki valmistui ja laitoin siihen söpöt napit (ne keskimmäiset) ja se oli ihana ja lämmin ja laitoin sen päälle ja...on se, liian iso. Mokoma lörpsähti kastelussa aika runsaasti, hieman niukahkosta pari numeroa liian isoksi. Päätyi se kyllä käyttöön, vaan ei minun. Sääli oli purkaa hyvää takkia joten hyvä että yksi ystävistäni on juuri passelin kokoinen siihen.

The Cadenza Cardi was finished and used the pretty buttons on it (the ones in the middle) and it was lovely and warm and I wore it and...yes, it was, too big. The darned thing relaxed way too much in the wet blocking turning from slightly small into a couple of sizes too big. Yes, it's going to be worn just not by me. I though it was a shame to rip a perfectly good cardi so it was good one of my friends was the right size for it.

Icarusta olen neulonut myös. Taas. Ja kaikki näytti oikein hyvälle kunnes lanka loppui. Taas. Huivi jäi vaille viimeistä reunakerrosta ja päättelykerrosta. Kaksi kerrosta vajaa siis tällä kertaa. Loistavaa! Ei kellään satu olemaan Hand Maiden Sea Silk-lankaa väriä Moss (omenanvihreää) pientä nöttöstä? Ostin langan syksyllä Helsingistä Titityyn standiltä, jos auttaa.

I've knitted the Icarus also. Again. And this time it was going so well until I ran out of yarn. Again. I'm missing last of the edge rows and bind-off row. So that is two rows of too little yarn. Excellent! By any chance, would anyone have any left-overs of Hand Maiden Sea Silk in Moss (the apple green colour)?

Nyt ei kyllä pahemmin neulotuta. Olen tehnyt mallitilkkua ja aloitin Swallowtail Shawlia ystävälle puuvillalangasta. Toivottavasti se riittää, muuten pitää etsiä se mummo sieltä jostain Guatemalasta.

I'm not feeling the knitting love here. I've done some swatches and started a Swallowtail Shawl for a friend with cotton yarn. Hopefully I won't run out of that or I'll have to find that little old lady somewhere in the countryside of Guatemala.

Mitähän sitä kirjoittaisi? Tekisi mieli rutista Interweave Knitsin surkeasta postituksesta, mutta se on jo hieman vanha juttu. Tosin...tekisi mieli sanoa heille että kannattaisi ehkä vaihtaa firmaan joka käyttää hieman modernimpia välineitä kuin etanoita ja soutuveneitä. Sitten tekisi mieli valittaa myös Knitpicksin surkeasta palvelusta, mutta en tiedä viitsinkö tehdä sitäkään. Tosin vinkkinä heille: jos arkipyhä vaikuttaa toimitusaikaan muutenkin kuin ko. päivän osalta kannattaisi siitä kertoa nettisivuilla. Ja myöskin jos tilaukset eivät ko. pyhän (tai muun) ansiosta lähde sivuilla mainittuna aikan, kannattaisi siitäkin myös infota. Ja asiakaspalvelua voisi parantaa vastaamalla mm. sähköposteihin ja soittaessa anteeksipyyntö/pahoittelu tekisi asiakkaan mielen paljon paremmaksi.

What should I write about? I would like to complain about the abysmal mailing service but I think it's a bit old now. Though...I would like to tell them they might think about switching to a company that uses somewhat more modern ways to deliver mail than with the aid of snails and rowing boats. Then Iä'd like to complain about the crappy Knitpicks service, but I don't know if I should do that either. Though, as a hint: if a bank holiday affects the delivery time other than for that day, it might be a good idea to mention that on the web site. Or, if the deliveries don't leave in the time that delivery information-page says (dute to said holiday or some other) it might be a good idea to mention that too. And as for customer service, answering the emails would be a nice touch and a "sorry" makes the customer feel so much better.

Viikonloppu oli kyllä varsinaista laiskottelua. En käynyt ulkona ollenkaan, laiskottelin kotona - katsoin töllöä, neuloin jne. Sain mm. tehtyä mallitilkkuja ja Icarus on nyt tilassa jossa se oli ennen purkua (lankaa on nyt paljon enemmän jäljellä kuin 17 metriä, joten pitäisi riittää) ja sain pääteltyä langanpäät Cadenza-takista ja se on myös kasteltu ja kuivateltu. Kiitos nappikommenteista, iso helmiäisnappi ja metallinen kukkanappi pääsivät toiselle kierrokselle. Ehkä istun vain hetken ja mietiskelen nappiuden sopivuutta?

The weekend was nice and relaxing. I didn't do much, just stayed in the house, watched tv, knitted etc. I did some swatches and Icarus is now in the state it was before I admitted I did not have enough yarn and ripped. Now I should have enough yarn (fingers crossed). I wove in the ends of the Cadenza cardi and blocked it. Thank you for the button comments, the big mother of pearl button and the one with the flowery details are on round two. Maybe I should just take my time and contemplate on the zen of the button?

Napit vastakkain - Button it up

Ok, olen tehnyt muutakin kuin pelannut. Takki Colinetten Cadenzasta alkaa olla siinä kunnossa että voi jo miettiä nappeja. Nappilista on jo valmis, tosin siitä ei tullut kovin kaunista joten sen ehkä voisi tehdä uudestaan. Tässä kuitenkin ehdokkaita napeiksi, näitä löytyy kotoa.

Vasemmalta lähtien löytyy ensin metallinen auringonkukkanappi, vieressä rusehtava helmiäisnappi, keskellä metallinen kukkanappi, vieressä helmiäisnappi joka ei noin ikävästi kiillä normaalisti ja viimeisenä oikealla metallinen kiemuranappi. Kiemuranappi on kiva mutta taitaa olla hieman liian painava tuohon takkiin. Ja pienemmät helmiäisnapit ovat tuliainen Seychelleiltä vuodelta yksi ja kaksi, joten mielelläni käyttäisin ne johonkin mutta ne taitavat taas olla hieman liian pienet. Tällä hetkellä suosikkeja taitavat olla keskimmäinen metallinappi ja iso helmiäisnappi. Nappeja menisi takkiin kuusi, pitänee vielä miettiä josko tekisi yhden napinläven lisää kun pituutta on hieman alkuperäistä enemmän.

Ok, I've done knitting too, not only playing. A cardi from Colinette's Cadenza has reached the stage where one can ponder about the buttons. And I have, pondered that is. The button band is ready but I fear I might have to re-knit it for it is not that nice-looking around the ends. But I have possible buttons!

Presenting from left to right: a metal sunflower, brownish mother of pearl button, a metal flowery one in the middle, right from that a larger mother of pearl one and on the right a swirly metal button. I like the button with the swirl but I think it's a bit too heavy for the material. And I would like to use the brownish mother of pearl buttons for something for I brought them from Seychelles a while ago but I think they are a bit too small, unfortunately. I guess it's either the larger mother of pearl buttons or flowery metal ones for this. There's now six button holes in the button band but I'm thinking I might add one for the cardi is somewhat longer than what was stated in the pattern.

All in all 22 entries, if the doll clothes are counted as one lump. Scarf I made plenty, six proper ones and a few cowls and such. But, I beat my last year's amount nicely. Yay me! This year I'll try to make more sweaters.

Nojoo

Pääsin eroon ketutuksestani ja olen neuloskellut pari riviä Icarusta purkamisen jälkeen. Mutta jos nyt ei lanka riitä niin pilkon mokoman saksilla sentin palasiksi ja hautaan metsään. Nih!

Vihreä näyttää olevan päivän sana täällä nykyisin. Tässä komeilee valmistunut Less is More-kauluri ja Kierre-kämmekkäät ovat todistamassa sitä että hyvin ne sopivat yhteen, vaikka eri langasta ovatkin. Kauluriin käytin vyyhdin Hand Maiden Fine Yarns Casbah Sockia (miksi ne laittavat aina moisia sanahirviöitä langoille?) ja sitä voisin neuloa toistekin, vaikka hieman pätkärääkättyjä vastaan nykyisin olenkin. Oli se vaan niin ihanaa neuloa.

I got over my irritation and have re-knitted a few lines of Icarus. But if I run out of yarn again I will take a pair of scissors and cut the darn thing up and bury it in a forest somewhere. So there!

Green seems to be the colour here these days. Here I have the finished Less is More-cowl and Kierre-fingerless gloves are there just to show that they do go quite well together even though they are not made of the same yarn. I made the cowl out of Hand Maiden Fine Yarn Casbah Sock (why, oh why, do they give such horrible names to yarns?) and I might do something else with it too though I am a bit agains variegated yarns these days. It was such a delight to knit with.

Ja pätkävärjätyistä mainiten...tässä on sitä itseään, kunnon pätkärääkättyä. Colinette Cadenza, ostettu syksyn messuilta Halvalla. Mikäs siinä, kiva neuloa, vaikka hieman värjääkin. Mallin kanssa oli pähkäilemistä, kun ei siitä oikein sileää voi tehdä kun tulee niitä läikkiä. Päädyin sitten yhteen Debbie Blissin malliin. Valmiina nyt selkäkappale ja toinen etukappaleista, eiköhän se tästä. Kun vaan muistaisi pysytellä erossa moisista. Vika on vaan siinä, että sitä käyttäytymistä ja mallin valinnan vaikeutta ei muista kun ihailee niitä kaikkia kauniita värejä vyyhdissä.

And speaking of variegated yarns. Here's one of them, Colinette Cadenza. I bought this from a fair last autumn for it was nice and cheap. Quite ok to knit with and seems nice and warm though the colour bleeds a bit. Had a bit of trouble choosing a pattern for I do not like what they usually do when knitting stockinette. So I picked one Debbie Bliss pattern and it does not look too bad. Back and one front piece finished so far. I just have to remember to keep away from variegated yarns. The trouble is that I never seem to remember how ugly they can be when I admire all the individual colours in a skein.

Feck!

Tiedättehän sen teorian, että jos pelkää että lanka ei riitä niin pitää neuloa vain nopeammin? No tässä tapauksessa se ei toiminut. Icaruksen reunapitsi, kerroksia jäljellä n. 24 ja lankaa jäljellä 17 metriä. Tämä yhtälö ei toimi.

You know the theory that if you're afraid you're going to run out of yarn you just have to knit faster? Well, in this case it didn't work. Edge lace of Icarus, knitting left about 24 rows and yarn left about 17 m. No solution for this equation.

...ja kiskotaan puikot irti. Ainakin tästä näkee hyvin minkä kokoinen huivista olisi tullut ennen purkuoperaatiota. Tämän jälkeen huivi laitettiin lepäilemään ja aloitettiin jotain muuta. Että näin täältä.

...and off come the needles. At least it was easy to see what size the scarf would have been if the ripping didn't happen. After which the scarf was left in the waiting pile and something new was started. This is what happened here this time.

Lomalomaloma - Holidaydayday

Aloitin tänään joululomani nukkumalla kahteentoista. Tosin kaikista "jei, loma"-puheistani huolimatta mies herätti minut puoli yhdeksältä ja ihmetteli että enkö meinaa mennä töihin. En todellakaan. 2. päivä sitten vasta.

I began my xmas holiday today by sleeping late and getting up at twelve. Though my husband had managed to not be aware of this and woke me up at half past nine to ask if I should be getting to work. No, not really. I won't go back there until January 2nd.

Icarus on vihdoin edennyt tylsästä vaiheesta edes hieman mielenkiintoisempaan. Pääsin aloittamaan kaaviota 2 eilen, eli aloittelemaan reunan pitsikuviota. Hurraa sille. Ja ei, siitä ei todellakaan saa hyviä kuvia neulottaessa - niskasta aloitettavien huivien huono puoli.

I'm finally past the boring bit in Icarus for I started the second chart yesterday. It means that I began the lace edge. Hooray for that. And no, I really can't get any decent photos of it when it is on the needles - that's the trouble with scarves you start at the neck.

Jätin virkkaukset syrjään hetkeksi ja otin tilkkuni hyötykäyttöön. Ystävän lapsen sängyssä havaittiin selvä peittopuute ja minulla ylimääräisiä tilkkuja niin katso: tilkkupeitto. Kuten kuvasta näkyy se nyt ei ole kovin täydellinen, mutta luulen että vastaanottaja ei siitä kauheasti välitä. En muista itse olleeni kovinkaan täydellisyyshakuinen neljävuotiaana. Ja tästähän voi aina parantaa, eikö? Kaapissa on vielä jokunen tilkku, eiköhän parin lankakokeilun jälkeen synny toinenkin peitto.

Tästä jäi yli vielä pari sinistä - olen itse aina kuvitellut että lankavarastoni on pääasiassa punavoittoista. Mutta ei sitä täällä ole viime aikoina kauheasti neulottu. Tosin täytyy myöntää että neljä langoista on tullut testiin Ullaa varten, joten en ole itse päässyt vaikuttamaan värivalintaan.

I laid down my crochet for a while and took my swatches and made use of them. I discovered a lack of suitable bedding material for a doll's bed while visiting a friend of mine and I happen to have some extra swatches and lo: a blanket was made. As you can see from the above picture it's far from perfect but I think that won't matter too much. I seem to remember not being too concened with things being perfect at age four. And I can only do better next time - no? I still have a few swatches left over and after a couple of knits I may be able to do another one.

The yarns in this blankie are: Novita Paloma, Sublime Organic Merinowool DK, Debbie Bliss Cathay, Hjertegarn Ribboo, Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo, Fortissima Socka mit Polycolon, O-wool classic 2-ply and a bit of some unknown pale blue yarn which I think might be very old Novita 7-veljestä. I also crocheted the edging around it with Novita Luxus Cloud. I was a bit amazed how blue-green my selection was for I had some blue swatches that didn't make it this round. I've always been of the opinion that I buy too much red yarn but I obviously haven't knitted it lately. Though four of the yarns in the blanket came for testing, for Ulla, so I couldn't really choose the colour.

Sitä ja tätä - This and that

Pimeys ja kahdet pikkujoulut viikonlopussa ei kyllä houkuttele minua blogaamaan. Kun nukkuu hiukan pidempään niin tuntuu että se päivänvalo hujahtaa ohi hetkessä ja muutenkin on jotenkin niin harmaan sävyistä. Mutta kohtahan on talvipäivänseisaus, niin eiköhän se hyväksi muutu. Valoisaan päin sitten ainakin ollaan menossa.

Darkness and two christmas parties in a weekend does not a very enthusiastic blogger make. When one wakes up slightly later it feels like the daylight is already over and all in all it's very grey at the moment. But soon we have the winter solstice and after that we're going towards lighter days.

#neulonnalla (neulonta-aiheinen irc-kanava) oli taannoin tiskirättivaihto. Osallistuin siihen vaikka tiesin että neulonta-aika jää vähäiseksi kun deadline oli matkalta paluuta seuraava torstai. En oikein viitsinyt neuloa mitään etukäteen kun parit saimme tietää vasta kun olin jo matkalla. Mutta onneksi kahta tiskirättiä ei nyt niin kauaa neulo, vaikka toiseen pitikin ostaa lisää lankaa kun mielestäni minulla ei ollut tarpeeksi kirkkaita värejä puuvillaa kotosalla. Lähetin tilkut Liisille ja Tiinapiinalle ja sain rätit Marja V:ltä (tuo harmaa kuviollinen) ja Taluttimelta (musta pintaneuletta). En ole aiemmin tehnyt tai käyttänyt moisia ja ajattelin että tässäpä tulee ainakin kaksi käyttöön. Pitää testata miltä moiset tuntuvat.

On the Finnish knitting irc-channel we had a dishcloth swap. I took part in it even though I knew I would not have much time to knit for the pairs were given out while I was away and the deadline for sending was the Thursday after I got back. But luckily it does not take that long to knit two discloths even though I had to buy yarn for one for I did not have bright enough colours in cotton at home. I knit two - to Liisi and Tiinapiina - and received two, one from Marja V (the swirly one on top) and Talutin (the black one). These are my first discloth, both knitted and received. Have to take them into use and see how I feel about them.

Perjantaina olivat firman pikkujoulut. Puitteet olivat hulppeat, olimme Finlandiatalossa, ruoka oli todella hyvää mutta pippalot aika tavanomaiset. Tuli hieman tanssittuakin mutta lähdin ajoissa kotiin. Lauantaina tuli sitten vietettyä aikaa kunnolla hyvässä porukassa, oli nimittäin Ullan pikkujoulut ja vuosikokous. Paikkana oli Stidilä ja siellä saunottiin, syötiin, juotiin ja laulottiinkin. Ja totta kai neulottiin! Sain lankaa lahjaksi, kaksi kerää oranssia Kidopale-mohairlankaa ja paketillisen suklaabanaaneita. Näen tulevaisuudessani oranssin pitsihuivin...

On Friday we had our company christmas party at Finlandia hall. Nice setting, but not that interesting party so I left quite early. Food was very good though. But on Saturday I was at home much later for then we had Ulla's christmas party and yearly meeting. The place was an old match factory and we ate, drank, sang a bit and of course knitted a lot. I got two skeins of orange Kidopale and some chocolate bananas as a present. I see an orange lacy scarf in the future...

Itselläni on yksi pitsihuivi kesken, Icarus. Mutta se on siinä rasittavan tylsässä vaiheessa että vielä pitää lisätä noin 80 silmukkaa ennenkuin pääsee neulomaan reunusta. Tylsää. Laitoin sen hieman odottamaan ja rupesin virkkaamaan. Tämä oudonmallinen esine ei ole pussukka vaan siitä tulee vartalo. Päätä aloittelin useamman kerran mutta siinä on selvästi jotain vikaa. Silmukkamäärissä on jotain häikkää ja lisäykset eivät tunnu tulevan kohdalleen. Vikahan ei missään nimessä ole siinä etten tajuaisi ohjetta - olen nimittäin erinomaisen fiksu (minulla on paperikin siitä jossain). E-ehei. Kyllä se ohjeen vika on...ensi kerralla merkkaan kyllä lisäysten paikat tarkkaan. Kyllä tästä pitäisi vielä Hello Kitty saada.

I have one lacy scarf I'm knitting at the moment, Icarus that is. But it is in that really boring stage where I still have to add about 80 stitches before I can move on to the lace edging and it seems to last forever. So I put it aside for a bit and started crocheting a bit. This weird looking thing is not a pouch or a beehive for it is to be a body. I have had some trouble with the head for there is something iffy going on in the pattern. I never seem to be able to place the increases in the correct spots. And of course it has nothing to do with me not being able to understand the pattern for I let you know that I'm very clever - I have a paper to prove it and all - no. It must be the pattern's fault. I think I'll have to mark the increase places clearly next time...but this should be a Hello Kitty eventually.

I was there and I'm square (or at least I have square)

Lomailin tuossa ohimennen viikon ja olen jo ehtinyt olla viikon takaisinkin. Mutta kun oli erinäisistä syistä pakko mennä töihin jo maanantaina eikä voinut viettää sitä toipuen, niin jetlagistä toipuminen vei normaalia kauemmin. Ja blogaaminenkaan ei huvittanut aiemmin...mutta nyt taas. Ei liene vaikea arvata missä kävin?

I was away for a week and I've been back a week already. But due to various reasons I could not be at home on Monday so my recuperation period was discontinued and it took longer than ususal to get over the jet lag. But I'm feeling me again and blogging happens too. I think it is not difficult to figure out where I went?

Jos ei oteta jet lagia huomioon niin lomailu tähän aikaan vuodesta sopii minulle hyvin. Se piristää kummasti, varsinkin jos menee jonnekin missä paistaa aurinko. Meillä oli hyvä tuuri - vain yhtenä päivänä satoi selvästi. Oli varsin kylmää mutta aurinko paistoi kuitenkin, mitä voi ehkä olla hieman vaikea huomata näistä kuvista. Mutta uskokaa nyt kuitenkin.

The jet lag aside, a holiday this time of the year is a very good thing for me, it makes me feel invigorated. Especially if I go someplace with more sun than here (it has been raining almost nonstop the last week). We were quite lucky, even though it was quite chilly it was sunny too - it rained noticeably only on one day. Though it might be a bit difficult to tell from these photos, you'll just have to trust me on this one.

Matka oli pääasiassa hortoilua ympäri kaupunkia ja shoppailua. Meillä kävi hiukan huono tuuri museoiden kanssa - tarkoitus oli käydä Ellis Islandilla ja vapaudenpatsaalla, mutta huonojen nettisivujen ansiosta emme päässeet sinne, mokoma meni kiinni aikaisin kiitospäivän vuoksi. Mutta, kävimme mm. Sinkkuelämää-kiertoajelulla (suosittelen, hauska) ja kuuntelemassa (vai katsellaanko sitä?) stand-up komiikkaa ja syömässä perinteisen kiitospäiväaterian joten hupia riitti, moneen suuntaan.

The trip consisted mainly of shopping and wondering around the town. We were a bit unlucky with our want of cultural experiences. We tried to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty but due to crappy websites we didn't know that they closed early on Thanksgiving so we couldn't go. But, we did among others Sex in the City bus tour (very enjoyable, I recommend), listened to some stand-up comedy and ate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Ja ehkä parissa lankakaupassakin tuli vierailtua...tosin Knitpicks-tilauksemme ei saapunut hotellille ajoissa vaikka maksoin ylimääräistä nopeasta toimituksesta. Selvittely on vielä kesken mutta hiukan rupeaa jo ottamaan päähän. Jos ei kohta tule jo jotain vastausta asiaan niin soitan Veijo Visalle ja peruutan koko maksun. Nih!

We maybe visited a yarn shop or two...although our Knitpicks order did not arrive at the hotel on time even though we paid extra for a speedy delivery. I'm still in the process of sorting things out but I'm gettin a bit pissed off to tell the truth and if I don't receive some answers soon I'm going to call my credit card company and cancel the payment. So there!

Mutta, jos laittaa kaksi neulojaa suureen kaupunkiin niin mitä siitä sitten saadaan? Neliskulmaisia puikkoja ainakin. Näitä löytyi Seaport Yarn -kaupasta. Muistaakseni ostin myös yhdet pyöröpuikot, mutta en nyt löytänyt niitä tähän kuvaussessioon. Näiden kanssa pitäisi kuulemma olla helpompi neuloa. En osaa kyllä nyt sanoa mitään puolesta enkä vastaan kun en ole kokeillut niitä vielä - mutta ovat ne ainakin hassut, eikö?

But, if you put two knitters into a big city what do you get? At least square knitting needles. These we came across at Seaport Yarn. I have a feeling I bought also a pair of circular needles but I didn't find them for this photo op. They're supposedly easier to knit with but I can't really comment on that since I haven't tried them out yet. But at least they're something new.

Lankanenä toimii ja voi hyvin. String tuli bongattua ihan ohimennen ja sieltä mukaan tarttui kaksi vyyhtiä punaista Prism Yarnsin Merino Mia-lankaa (kuvassa ne yksiväriset). Näistä piti tulla kauluri mutta sitten Knitty City-kaupasta (joka olisi voinut laittaa infoa ajoissa nettisivulle että se menee kiinni aikaisemmin keskiviikkona ennen kiitospäivää - siellä piti käydä kahdesti) löytyi kivaa punakirjavaa Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon-lankaa ja siitähän se kauluri nyt sitten tulee. Merino Miat voi käyttää vaikka toisiin Kierteisiin. Kävimme myös Purlissa mutta sieltä ei tullut ostettua mitään.

The yarn nose is well and working. It spotted String and I got two skeins of Merino Mia from Prism Yarns. These were supposed to become a cowl of some sort but after our visit to Knitty City (which could have posted on their web site in time that they close early on Wednesday due to Thanksgiving, we had to make two trips there) I'm not so sure anymore. For there I found a lovely red skein on Mountain Colors Merino Ribbon that will be the cowl. The Merino Mias might become another set of Kierre-fingerless mittens for example. We did visit Purl too but we didn't buy anything there.

Kinokuniyalla on kauppa myös Manhattanilla. Neulekirjoja on runsaasti ja siellä vierähtikin tovi. Mukaan lähti kolme koreaa kirjaa, joista yksi tosin on virkkausta. Mutta kuka voisi vastustaa virkattua Hello Kittyä? Kyllä tästä yksi joululahja löytyy.

Kinokuniya has a store in Manhattan too and they have quite a few knitting books so a while was spent there. I came out with these three pretty books one of which is a crochet book but who could resist a crocheted Hello Kitty? I see one Christmas present here at least.
