Maitoa puikoilla - Milk on the needles

Kun tässä olen erinäiseen otteeseen kitissyt siitä ettei ehdi enää neulomaan, niin eikös se tauti ottanut ja tullut. Ehkä Ullantekostressi aiheutti pöpöinvaasion? No, olen tässä kuitenkin kaksi päivää lähinnä istunut sohvalla, neulonut ja tuijottanut töllöä ja toiminut kissan nukkumapaikkana. Maitolanka pääsi heti puikoille, siitä on muotoutumassa liivi tyyliin "neulotaan, sovitellaan ja sitten kirjoitetaan ohje". Näyttää ainakin siltä, että helmaresori pitää tehdä uusiksi mutta muuten tuntuu tulevan ihan kivaa. Tässä on mennyt vajaa 200g, eli ostamani 300g pitäisi riittää hyvin. Toinen kerä näyttää olevan selvästi raidallisempaa kuin ensimmäinen. Hassua, luulin niitä enemmänkin läikällisiksi.

I have complained on several occasions that I have no time to knit anymore. Well, whether it was Ulla-induced stress or what but I got a bug. I spent most of yesterday and today at home on the sofa, knitting and watching dvds and being a cat-bed. The milk yarn is on the needles and fast becoming a vest of some sort of the " knit, try on, then figure out the pattern"-type. It seems I have to re-knit the hem ribbing but other than that it looks ok. Here's a bit less than 200g's worth of yarn knitted up. Looks like my 300g's will be enough. But the second ball is more striped than the first, funny.

Lehtimyyjä katkaisi päivätorkkuni lyhyeen ja koska minä en saanut nukkua niin kostinpa asian kuvaamalla kissan unta. Ei sekään kauhean ilahtuneelta näyttänyt. Nyt mut voi sitten ilmoittaa eläinrääkkääjänä eteenpäin...mutta kun se näyttää aina niin makoisalta se kissan uni.

A magazine saleslady cut my nap short this afternoon by phoning me and trying to offer me some magazines. And since I couldn't sleep I disturbed the cat's sleep too by taking photos. Now you can go and report me as abusing animals...but it always looks sooo good when a cat is sleeping.

Ja mitään en tunnusta! - And I confess nothing!

Käytiin porukalla tänään lankakauppakierroksella. Sypressi oli auki tänään Silakkamarkkinoiden vuoksi ja eilen ostetun Loftin seuraan lähti kolme kerää maitolankaa. Kyllä, luitte oikein, maitolankaa. Allaolevassa kuvassa oikealla se on. Nimeltään Sole Latte, Rosarios 4 on valmistaja ja koostumus on 100% maito. Sitä oli vain jäljellä kolme kerää ja ne lähtivät sieltä mukaan. 100g:n kerässä lankaa on vain noin 165 m, joten se on tiivistä tavaraa. Mutta siinä on aivan ihana väri ja se kiiltää kauniisti. Toivon saavani tästä liivin, ja jahka Ulla pääsee taas julki, niin ryntään heti langan kimppuun. Ostin myös tarjousnappeja, joilla olisi tarkoitus jotenkin koristella liiviä, Mielitty-tyyliin.

A horde of us went through a couple of yarn stores today. Sypressi was open today because of the fish festival thing and I was feeling a bit bad since I left some yarn there today and they had 25% off for the last time due to enlarging the yarn space and, well, I came out with milk yarn. Yes, you read right, it's made out of milk. Here in the above photo it is in the company of the multicolour Loft-yarn I got yesterday. It's called Sole Latte and it's made by Rosarios 4 and it is 100% milk. They only had three balls left and I bought them all. One 100g ball has only 165 m yarn in it so it is quite heavy stuff but the colours are lovely and it has a nice sheen to it. I'm hoping to get a vest out of it and I also got some buttons to decorate it with. We'll see what happens. After the next Ulla I'm hoping to get my hands on this.

Sitten joku oli bongannut jostain blogista että jossain Oulunkylässä oli joku ystävyysmyynti. Menimme sitten sinne seuraavaksi. Onneksi kävimme pankkiautomaatin kautta, koska siellä ei kauheasti pankkikortti kelvannut. Kyseessä oli siis Helsinki Fashion House ja siellä oli yhdellä osastolla lankaa (Nordia Producter). Ihan vahingossa tarttui mukaan kaksi kiloa lankaa. Mutta, jos törmää näin ihanaan petrooliin lankaan (Viking Froaygarn, 80% superwash-villaa, 20% nailonia) hintaan 20€/kilo niin voiko olla ostamatta?

Then somebody got a hint out of some blog that somewhere there was a outlet sale going on. And we went there. Luckily via a atm since they didn't much care for cards there. The place in question was Helsinki Fashion House and they had yarn there on one stall (Nordic Producter). Quite by accident I bought two kilos of yarn. But if one sees such a lovely teal shade (Viking Froaygarn, 80% superwash wool, 20% nylon) that costs 20€/kilo, can one pass it by?

Mukaan tuli vielä ärtsynvihreää villalankaa myös kilo, Naturgarn no. 1 (100% uutta villaa), 15€/kilo. Se jotenkin puhutteli minua.

Along came also a kilo of almost acid green wool, Naturgarn no. 1 (100% new wool), 15€/kilo. It spoke to me.

Hannu tuli kotiin perjantaina Kööpenhaminasta, joten sain tuliaisia. Setti Pilgrimiä, nättiä ja kimaltavaa ja sopii uuteen gootti-imagooni. Harmi vaan että korvikset olivat vahingossa napsulliset. Ei kukaan ole menossa Kööpenhaminan lentokentälle lähimmän kuukauden aikana?

Hannu came back from Copenhagen on Friday and I got some goodies. A set of Pilgrim. Nice, sparkly and goes well with my new goth-image. Too bad the earrings were clip-ons by mistake...now I just have to find someone who goes to Copenhagen airport in the next month.

Namusia! - Goodies!

Eilen oli hyvä päivä. Ostin uudet kengät ja ehdin vielä jumppaankin (vaihteeksi jotain hieman naisellisempaa).

Yesterday was a good day. I bought a pair of shoes and still managed to be on time at the gym (something a bit more feminine for a change).

Mutta ei siinä vielä kaikki. Kotona lattialla odotti kaunis kukkakuosinen kirjekuori jonka sisällä olivat nämä. Sekä hiukan suklaata ja kovia piparminttukarkkeja. Ne eivät mahtuneet kuvaan, koska söin suklaat heti (röyh) ja piparminttunapit eivät enää olleet kääreessään (mutta niitä sentään en syönyt heti). Mutta muuten siellä oli siis uusin Interweave Knits-lehti, vyyhti sukkalankaa (Zenstring Bambewe väriä Amethyst, 60% merinoa, 30% babmua ja 10% nailonia), kiva kortti (neulojalle neuloja totta kai), Knitpicksin puupuikot ja purkista löytyy bee bar - tavallaan kiinteä vartalovoide.

Ihana paketti, kiitos salaiselle ystävälle! Lanka on todella kauniin väristä ja pehmeää - tekisi mieli heti aloittaa siitä sukat, ja noita Knitpicksin puikkoja olinkin vähän silmäillyt. Ja täytyy sanoa, se todellakin ovat paljon kauniimmat luonnossa. Mehiläispuikko menee kyllä heti käyttöön kuvia kantapäitäni sulostuttamaan. Mutta, täytyy sanoa, että tämän ansiosta kiinnostukseni tavallisiin sukkalankoihin vähenee kyllä kovasti.

But that is not all. When I got home after the dance session, I found a lovely floral-print envelope waiting for me. My Secret Pal had sent me another gift. There were also some chocolate inside, but they didn't make their way into the picture since I ate them straight away, and also some hard peppermint candy, but since they were not in the package by this time I left them out too (and no, I did not eat them straight away). But what got into the photo is this: the latest Interweave knits, a skein of lovely sock yarn (Zenstring Bambewe in Amethyst, 60% merino, 30% bamboo, 10% nylon), a cute card (a knitter for a knitter), a set of Knitpick's Harmony dpns and in the yar is a bee bar - sort of like a solid body lotion.

Lovely packet, thanks so much SP! The yarn has really beautiful colours and it is so soft - I'd like to start knitting it straight away and I had been eyeing the Knitpicks needles. Now I can try them, and I must say, the colours are much nicer than it seems by looking at the website. The bee bar came in handy since I have quiet dry feet. Though, I must say, thanks to this my interest in normal sock yarns is even less than it was before.

Tuntuu sunnuntailta - It feels like Sunday

Jaa, että miksikö? No ehkäpä siksi että en ollut perjantaina töissä. Veli tuli torstaina käymään ja vietimme perjantaina jokusen tunnin koluten Helsingin divareita. Tällä kertaa ei löytynyt kivoja neulekirjoja, mutta jotain silti tarttui mukaan. Ostin minäkin sitten tuon Friday Night Knitting Club-kirjan, kun oli halvalla. Ja mukaan tarttui myös ensimmäinen kausi Babylon 5-sarjaa.

And why is that? Well, I think it's because I was not at work on Friday. My brother came over on Thursday and we spent some hours on Friday going through some of the second hand book stores in Helsinki. This time I did not find any nice knit books but I picked up a few things nonetheless. I got a copy of the Friday Night Knitting Club since it was in a good condition and cheap too, and I also found the first season of Babylon 5.

Torstain neulekonekursssilla tein mallitilkkua. Tarkoitus on tehdä V-kaulainen liivi jotain Eunnyn Deep V Argyle Vest -tyyliin, mutta ei kuitenkaan. Kuvitelkaa tämä kuvio kirjavalla pohjalla, ja pohjavärit ovat tästä langasta (Knitpicks Gloss) värit Concord Grape, Dusk ja Woodland Sage (oheisessa kuvassa pohjavärinä on viimeksimainittu). Ja mustalla leveä joustin kaula-aukkoon ja helmaan, kapeampi joustin kädentiehen. Ensi kerralla pääsee jo varmaan neulomaan, jei.

On Thursday's machine knitting class I did a swatch. I'm going to make a V-neck vest, something like Eunny's Deep V Argyle Vest but not quite. Picture this pattern in a randomly striped background of colours from this yarn (Knitpicks Gloss), colours Concord Grape, Dusk and Woodland Sage (the background colour in the above swatch is Sage). And a wide rib in black on the neck edge and hem, narrower one at the arm edges. Next week I'll get to the knitting part, yay.

Ihmiskunnan mysteerit - The mysteries of the human kind

Neulonta-aika on taas kadonnut jonnekin (kuka vei, tunnustakaa!) ja tuntuu että samaa sukkaakin on tullut jauhettua kuukausikaupalla. Ensimmäinen sukka oli jo edennyt hyvän matkaa kohti varpaita, mutta sitten pysähdyin ja katsoin tulosta (aina vaarallista). Olen poiminut ilmeisesti liikaa silmukoita kantalapun reunasta, ja nytpä se kohta pussittaa ruman näköisesti. Mikäpä siis neuvoksi, aloitin toista sukkaa ja varsi on jo neulottu. Teenpä siis toista sukkaa ja katson tuleeko tuosta kohdasta paremman näköinen ennenkuin puran tuon ensimmäisen. Systeemi ei vaan nyt ole enää kauhean mukanakuljetettavassa muodossa kun neulon molemmista päistä kerää. Ei ole kaunista, ei. Eikä aina edes kauhean toimivaa.

My knitting time seems to have vanished somewhere (who took it? Confess!) and I feel like I've knitted this same sock for months. But here I am now. And it does not look pretty. I think I've picked up too many stitches at the heel edge and as a result the sock has an unseemly bag there. What to do? I of course immediately started on the second sock, it's entering the heel flap stage. I'll see how that turns out before I rip back on the first one. But the two-sock system is not so portable anymore since I'm knitting at the both ends of the ball. It's not pretty...and even unpractical at times.

Minua epäilyttää...raitapaita on saanut ihan kunnolla kehuja ihmisiltä, mikä tietysti on aina mukavaa. Samoin neulekoneopettaja oli ihan otettuna torstaina ideastani yhdistää musta suhteellisen yksinkertainen kirjoneulekuvio random-raitataustaan. Mikä tässä siis epäilyttää? No tietysti se, että kiitosta tuntuvat eniten saavan "heitetään tämä nyt vähän näin ja katsotaan mitä tulee"-ideani. Eli pitäisikö siis lopettaa ajattelu ja suunnittelu kokonaan ja vain säveltää? Ovatko aivot suuren luovuuden esteenä? Lobotomiako ratkaisuna?

I'm feeling a bit dubious...the stripey sweater has earned me quite a few compliments from fellow kitters and other people. Which is always nice. And on Thursday at the machine knitting class the teacher was very taken with my idea to combine a relatively simple black fair-isle pattern with random-striped background. So what has got me feeling this way? Well, it seems that I earn my best reviews with "ooh, I'll throw this in here and see what comes" -ideas. So should I stop thinking and planning alltogether and just go with the flow? Is the brain standing in the way of great creativity? Is lobotomy the answer?

Tyhjennystä

(only in Finnish, sorry)

Jos ei lankavarasto pienene neulomalla niin sitten muuten (samaa sukkaa nysvään vieläkin, ei suuria grammoja siitä irtoa) niin laiton muutaman toimettoman lankakerän huuto.nettiin myyntiin. Tulossa on ehkä vielä lisää lankaa, jahka osaan päättää haudonko joitankin keriä vielä vai luovunko varastoinnista. Täällä siis.

Katse eteenpäin - Moving on

Raitapaidasta tuli siis ehdottomasti pidettävä. Tässä vielä kuva sivun langanvaihtokohdista. Tein vaihtokohdat siten, että uuden värisen kerroksen jälkeen aloitin toisen kerroksen nostamalla edellisen kerroksen silmukan puikolle ja neulomalla nämä kaksi silmukkaa yhteen. Se toimi aika hyvin, kuten kuvasta näkyy. Ei nyt ihan täydellistä vielä, mutta hyvä alku.

The stripey sweater turned out definitely wearable. Here's what the side seam looks like. I tried to do jogless stripes and I succeeded quite ok. I did it so that after finishing a round with a new colour, I picked up a stitch from the previous round and knitting it together with the first stitch on the needles. Not perfect yet, but not bad either.

Ehdin eilen jo tehdä mallitilkkua. Ihastuin Oriel-pitsineuleeseen kesän Interweave Knits-lehdestä. Käsillä ei nyt kuitenkaan ole pätkävärjättyä silkkilankaa, joten ajattelin kokeilla kaksinkertaisella Knitpicksin Shimmerillä. Se toimii aika hyvin. Tässä on mallitilkku pestynä ja pingoitettuna. Onkohan tuo nyt kuitenkin hieman levotonta? Tuo on väriä Turquoise splendor, meinasin siitä Peacock Feathers -shaalia, mutta ei sen nyt välttämättä tarvitse turkoosia olla. On minulla vielä Shimmeriä kahta väriä tarpeeksi huiviin. Ehkä siitä tulee punainen tai lila-kirjava (Flower Garden tai Stained Glass).

I did a new swatch yesterday. I like the Oriel Lace Blouse from IK Summer and since I don't have any variegated silk yarn on hand I started thinking what else I could use and I tried Knitpicks Shimmer doubled. It worked quite well, above is the swatch washed and pinned. Although...is that a bit too restless? The colourway is Turquoise Splendor and I was thinking of making a Peacock Feathers Shawl out of it but who says it has to be blue? I have enough red or violet to make it too (Flower Garden and Stained Glass).

Raitapaita on valmis, vihdoinkin! Tein kauluksen pariin otteeseen, mutta nyt se on aika hyvä. Päättelin reunan vaan aika löysästi, pitää katso mitä sille käytössä tapahtuu, eli tarvitseeko tiukennusta vai ei. Ihme että tästä tuli näinkin mukava, eihän minulla mitään ohjetta ollut, neuloin vaan. Ylösalaisin tehty raglanpaita tämä.

The stripey sweater is finished, at last! I made the collar a couple of times but now it's quite good. I did the bind off quite loosely, so I'll have to see how it behaves meaning I might have to tighten it a bit at some point. I'm surprised this turned out so nice since I didn't have any pattern, just knitted it. A top-down raglan it is.

Ja istuu se takaakin. Olisin kyllä voinut kiskoa sen hieman paremmin tuolta alhaalta, enpä huomannut. Ja joo, minulla on leveä selkä.

And the back fits too. I could have straightened it a bit down in the middle but I didn't notice it. And yes, I do have a very wide back.

Asiasta viidenteen...sain hämmästyksekseni Vogue Knittingin vain pari viikkoa tilaamisen jälkeen. Olin jo varautunut odotukseen ja valitusmailien lähettämiseen muiden ihmisten kokemusten perusteella mutta näin se vain tuli, hyvin. Olisin kyllä voinut jättää sen 25-vuotisjuhlanumeron väliinkin, siinä kun ei oikein ollut mitään kauhean mielenkiintoista. Meinasin myydä lehden, mutta kissa oksensi sen päälle, joten nähtävästi pidän sen.

And on to another matter...to my surprice I received Vogue Knitting magazine promptly about two weeks after I ordered it. I had prepared myself for a long wait and some email-sending based on other people's experience but there it came. I could have happily skipped the 25-year anniversary issue, it didn't have much to interest me. I was planning on selling the issue but the cat threw up on it, so I guess I'm keeping it.

Ihmettelijöille tiedoksi: kyllä, osallistun -10% projektiin, mutta nämä onkin hankittu ennen kyseisen tapahtuman alkua. Mutta mitäpä lautaselta löytyy? Sain omituisen himon virkata jotain ja virkkauslankaetsinnöissäni törmäsin Noroon. Sitä kyllä tavallisesti neulotaan, mutta tässä onkin kyseessä Noro Daria, puuvillalanka rayon-kuorrutuksella. Ja voi sitä kiiltoa! Tässä on ehdottomasti sellainen lanka josta kannattaa pitää huolta neuletapaamisessa jos sen sattuu sinne näytille viemään koska "mulle tämä heti"-vaikutus on valtava. Eipä tuosta välttämättä viitsisi mitään päälläpidettävää tehdä, mutta siitä tulee virkattuja pussukoita tai peräti laukku. Lisäksi lautasella koreilee kolmea väriä Hjertegarnin Blend Bamboo-lankaa (70% bambua, 30% puuvillaa), hiekanväristä on enemmän ja mustaa ja vaaleansinistä kumpaakin yksi kerä. Kun nyt halvalla sai.

And first for those who wonder: yes, I'm still taking part in a stash-reduction project but these I acquired before such an event started. But what's on the plate today? I got an odd urge to crochet something and in my quest for the perfect crochet yarn I came across Noro. Not something you'd normally associate with crocheting, but this Noro happens to be Daria Multi, a cotton yarn with rayon coating. Oh, that shine! This is definitely one of those yarns that you should keep an eye on should you happen to take it to a knit meet for other to fondle for the "I want this!" -factor is very high for this yarn. I wouldn't want to do anything to wear from this but should be just perfect for a crocheted bags. Also on the plate is Hjertegarn's Blend Bamboo (70% bamboo, 30% cotton). I have sand-coloured yarn a bit more and black and pale blue one each. It was a bargain, really.

Herkkuja - Goodies

Jei, salaiselta kamulta tuli paketti. Tiesin sen tulosta jo viime viikolla, mutta mokoma juuttui tulliin joten sitä piti säätää - en todellakaan ehdi HKI-Vantaan lentokentälle joskus virka-aikaan (täytyy tehdä töitä, nääs) ja sitten piti pantata sitä pakettikorttia torstaihin asti kun olin menossa kaupunkiin muutenkin. Mutta mikäpäs sen hauskempaa, eikö se odotus ole puoli huvia?

Yay, my Secret Pal sent me a package. I knew it was here last week when I got the notice from the customs. But since it arrived at Helsinki-Vantaa and I did not want to go there nor did I have that much chances of going there when it was open (one must work to earn the money to buy yarn, you see) I had to arrange for it to be sent to Helsinki center. Then I waited until Thursday when I was planning to go to town anyway, and don't they say that anticipation is half the fun?

Minä kuitenkin sain vastinetta odotukselleni, tosin olisittepa kuulleet sen tullivirkailijan äänensävyn kun se näki paketin sisällön. "Jaahah" oli kommentti...ilmeisesti nainen ei siis neulonut. No, eipä tarvinnut kauaa siellä aikaa viettää. Mutta paketista paljastui herkkää keväisen väristä Yarn Love Juliet-lankaa väriä nimeltä Grace, Brittanyn eko-sormikaspuikot (viiden vuoden takuulla, mitä se sitten kattaakaan), vihreää teetä ja puinen avaimenperä, sellainen sukamuotoinen puupala jolle voi neuloa sukan peitoksi (sock blocker ulkomaaksi). En nyt tiedä olenko outo vai mitä, mutta mieleen nousi heti erilaisia minisukkavaihtoehtoja joita voisi tehdä ja vaihdella sitten aina juhlan ja vuodenajan kunniaksi...miten olisi suomenlippuminisukka? Tai joulunpunainen jouluminisukka? Ja keväänvihreän sukkalangan jämistä kevätsukka - minulla nimittäin aina jää lankaa jonkinverran yli? Isänmaallinen siniristilippusukka? Mutta alla on kuitenkin kuva. Tuo langan väri on suhteellisen oikea. Sitä oli hankala saada tallentumaan muistikortille, todellisuudessa se on hieman raikkaampi. Mutta ihku paketti kuitenkin. Ai, ja oli siellä Ghirardellin suklaaneliökin, mutta unohdin sen jo koska se syötiin (emmävaanmitäänmääoonihanviaton). Olenko minä nyt sitten Warteenotettava neuloja kun minulla on eko-puikot? Anonillihän minulla on jo ;-)

But I got quite adequate gratification too, not instant but what can you do. Though you should have heard the custom official's voice when she saw the inside of the parcel: "ookay" in a very disinterested voice. I guess she wasn't a knitter then. Quick trip it was. But I was far from disinterested, I can tell you. Inside the package I found a skein of spring-coloured Yarn Love Juliet sock yarn in Grace colourway, a set of "sustainably harvested domestic birch hardwood, made in Northern California" Brittany glove needles (though, what does the 5 year replacement guarantee mean?), a travel tin of Orange Spice Green Tea and Sock Blocker keychain (very appropriate, being baltic wood and all). Am I odd or just a peculiar when I straight away started thinking of different "clothes" for the keychain? You know, red for the christmas time, a blue-white one for our independence day, leftovers from the springy sock yarn for a spring attire (I always have some leftovers from sockyarns). But above is a photo. I played with photoshop and I got the colours almost right. In real life the colours are a bit more fresh but the colourway was hard to get to stick to the memory card. But a very lovely packet nonetheless. Oh, I almost forgot, there was a Ghirardelli square in there too, but I ate it already. Am I a Proper knitter now that I have "organic" needles?

Ja viimeisenä vain kaunis kuva. Ostelin innokkaasti euron hedelmiä ja pistin ne vatiin. Tässäpä syötävää (ja antioksidantteja)!

And last just a pretty picture. A chain of grocery stores had a campaign, fruits for one euro (a kilo, a package or a piece, whichever was appropriate). I got a bit carried away and bought lovely fruit aplenty and put them into a bowl. What a treat.

Ei kauhean pehmeä lasku - Not a very soft landing

Takaisin työelämään siis. Nyt on vasta keskiviikko ja jo meinaa stressautua.

Olin lomalla siis viime viikon ja matkakohteena oli tällä kertaa vaihteeksi kotimaa. Ajelimme parina päivänä saariston rengastietä (täällä lisää infoa). Olimme yötä Nauvossa ja jatkoimme sitten seuraavana päivänä kierrosta loppuun. Ilmat nyt olivat suhteellisen ok, keskiviikko oli ihan kiva ja torstaina tuli satunnaisia sadekuuroja. Maisemat olivat kauniit, mutta selvästi sesonki oli jo loppunut ja olisimme ihan hyvin voineet kääntyä Korppoosta takaisin, loppumatkassa ei ollut mitään ihmeellistä. Minua kiinnosti mm. Stentorpin lammastila, jossa poikkesimmekin. Lampaita kyllä näin, mutta en sitten mitään muuta. Nettisivujen mukaan paikan olisi pitänyt olla ilman ennakkosoittoa auki elokuun loppuun asti 12-18 mutta eipä ollut ainakaan silloin kun me siellä kävimme. Hmph ja pöh sanon minä.

Back to work life that is. It is only Wednesday and I'm already starting to think I have too much to do.

I had last week off and for a change we travelled in Finland. We drove around the archipelago ring-road for a couple of days. We spent a night in Nauvo and then continued the next day. The weather was quite ok, Wednesday was nice and sunny and on Thursday there was occasional showers. The scenery was beautiful but it seemed that the season had ended already and we could have gone back from Korppoo since there was pretty much nothing from that point on. I was interested in Stentorp sheep farm where we stopped. I did see some sheep but not much else. According to the web pages it was supposed to be open from 12-18 until the end of August without any advance booking but apparently it was not so. Hmph, I say.

Mutta Kustavin savipaja oli sentään auki. Siellä oli villisikoja, agressiivisen oloinen pupu ja lampaita. Olipa siellä lankaakin, mutta se oli sitä ihan normaalia kauppakamaa joten mitään ei tarttunut mukaan (olin vähän haaveillut jostain erikoisemmasta). Lisäksi näimme vanhoja kivikirkkoja runsaasti.

But the Kustavi pottery factory was open. They had wild boars, an aggressive bunny and some sheep. They even had some yarn there, but since it was the normal store kind I passed it (I had been hoping for something a bit more handycrafty). And we saw medieval stone churches aplenty.

Neulontarintamalle ei kuulu mitään uutta ja ihmeellistä. Lomaviikon aikana sain neulottua vain kantalapun sukkaan (en nähtävästi ole hyvä autoneuloja). Mutta raitapaita-raukassa on taas kaksi hihaa, tällä kertaa samanlaisia. Nyt vaan kaulusta tekemään ja on paita, juuri sopivasti kun säät viilenevät. Lisäksi Salaisen ystävän paketti odottaa tullipostissa.

Nothing very exciting going on at the knitting front. During my week off I only knitted a heel flap for a sock (apparently I'm not much of a car-knitter). But the stripey sweater has two sleeves again and this time they even match. Now it's just the collar and I have a sweater just in time too for the weather has turned cool. Also my Secret Pal's package is waiting for me at the customs.

The mailbox clonked promisingly today and yes, there it was. A letter from my SP. It was sent from the States on 20th and inside I found a cheerful sunflower card...

...ja suklaata. Totta, tämä ei ole suosikkini Ghirardellin suklaista, mutta hyvää silti. Voiko pahaa suklaata olla olemassakaan?? Ai, voi. Varsinkin marsipaanitäytteinen. Ugh.

...and a chocolate square. True, it is not my favourite amongst the Chirardelli selection but good nonetheless. Is there even such a thing as bad chocolate? Oh, wait, yes there is. Especially if it is filled with marzipan. Yuck.

Mutta tässä seuraava salaisuus. Riihimäeltä tarttui mukaan pussi yllärilankaa. Todennäköisesti siis Novitaa, nehän niitä harrastavat tehtaanmyymälässään. Se oli Sadulla lämpökäsittelyssä ja eilen ryhdyin toimiin. Tässä vaiheessa kaikki näyttää hyvältä.

But here's the next mystery. From Riihimäki I got a bag of mystery yarn. It was in a clear plastic bag without any identifying marks so it is probably Novita yarn, since they sell their odds and ends like that in the factory outlet. It was with Satu enjoying a nice, long sauna and I got it last week. Yesterday I decided to deal with it. In this stage everything looks promising.

And here too. The yarn is a lovely purple, slightly heathered.

Mutta karu tilanne paljastui ennenpitkää. Urakkaan meni tuntikausia ja vieläkin on jonkinlainen takkupesä selvitettävänä. Lankaahan oli pussin merkinnän mukaan kuitenkin noin 800g ja se ei ole kauhean paksua. Hermot meinasi mennä välillä. Ja menikin. Onneksi väri on sentään kaunis, muuten tämä olisi löytänyt uuden kodin taloyhtiön roskalaatikosta alte aikayksikön.

But the situation revealed itself in all its ugliness quite soon. It took me hours to untangle this mess and I still have some left to deal with. After all, the bag said there was 800 grams of this stuff and it is not that thick. If the colour wasn't so lovely this mess would have found a new home at our garbage can sooner than later.

Mutta sitkeydessä on palkintonsakin. Kauniita lankakeriä syntyi vähitellen.

But perseverance had its rewards and I got nice yarn balls eventually.

Mutta nyt herää kysymys, mitä lankaa tämä on? Kysynkin teiltä josko löytyy Wanhan Novitan tuntijoita (tai ainakin lankakartan omaajia). Lanka on Florican oloista kierteeltään, mutta ei mielestäni ole sitä (hiplailuvertailu antoi negatiivisen tuloksen, sekä uuden että vanhan Florican kanssa). Polttokokeen perusteella kyseessä on jos ei 100% eläinkuitu niin hyvin lähellä sitä (ei kuulemma pala samalla tavalla kuin 7-veljestä jossa keinokuitua on 25%). Käsituntuma on liukas, melkein saippuamainen. Ensin ajattelin että se olisi alpakkaa, mutta alla on vertailun vuoksi lanka kuvattu Novitan alpakan kanssa eikä se ole samanlaista. Kierteet erottuvat selvemmin. Langassa on kuitenkin alpakkamaisia hetaleita, eli sellaisia vaaleita kovempia kuituja jotka irtoilevat käsittelyssä. Ai, ja sitten se on vielä meleerattua. Hmm...sanoo hän ja ihmettelee. Onks kellään...ideoita siis?

But now the question is what yarn is this? According to the burn test it is if not 100% animal fiber then very close to it (for it does not burn like a wool yarn with 25% plastic in it). It feels very slick, almost soapy, like alpaca. I thought it'd be that but then I compared it with Novita's old Alpaca yarn and it does not quite feel or look like it. So I'm hoping someone has knowledge of old Novita yarns (or at least a colour chart) has some ideas.

Put your hands up in the air

Hihoja on nyt kaksi. Unohdetaan nyt vielä vähäksi aikaa se, että toista hihaa pitää vielä purkaa hieman ja neuloa uudelleen ja ihastellaan kaksihihaista paitaa.

Now there are two, sleeves that is. Let's forget for a while that I still have to rip the other one back a bit and reknit and admire the two-sleeved sweater.

Onnistuin tiistain neuletapaamisessa päättelemään jo osan lankoja, joten nyt minulla on jo pari langanpäätöntä kohtaa hihassa. Ja kyllä, seurassa päättelykään ei tunnu niin vastenmieliseltä.

I even managed to weave in a couple of loose end on last Tuesday's knit meet. Now I have two neat areas in my sleeve without any unseemly hanging ends. And yes, finishing seems much nicer when done in company.

Koska minäkin liityin -10% projektiin, niin valmisteluja piti tehdä. Siksipä tilasin Kurkkupaikasta lopetettuja Jaegerin lankoja, tai siis vain yhtä lankaa, Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Chunkyä värissä Teal. Se on kaunis tumma petrooli. Käsituntuma ei ole yhtä ihanan pehmeä kuin jossain muissa merinoissa, mutta lanka tuntuu kuitenkin miellyttävältä ja siinä on hyvä kierre. Tässä palmikot varmaan erottuvat kauniisti mikä on hyvä koska niitä sen tulevaisuudessa tulee olemaan.

And since I joined the -10% project (10% off your weight, both stash and body) I had to make some preparations. Thusly, the cucumber place sent me a kilo of Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Chunky in Teal. A lovely dark colour. It is not as soft as some merinos I've encountered but it does have a lovely tight feel to it. I bet this shows off cables fabulously which is fortuitous for those it will encounter in the future.

Hidasta mutta etenee - Slow going

Raitapaidan hiha etenee. Vauhti ei kyllä päätä huimaa, mutta toisaalta tulosta syntyy raita kerrallaan, melkein huomaamatta kunhan malttaa vaan olla ajattelematta sitten niitä noin miljoonaa langanpäätä mitkä pitää sitten joskus päätellä. Siksipä onkin hyvä että pidän tuloksesta kyllä kovasti, tästä tulee kiva farkkupaita. En kyllä pidä hihojen neulomisesta pyörönä tähän suuntaan, sylissä möllöttävä paksu möntti kun ei edesauta sujuvaa neulomista. Ja tässä en tarkoita kissaa (joka ei kyllä ole paksu nykyisin ollenkaan enää) vaan sitä loppua paitaa.

The sleeve of the stripey sweater is progressing. The speed is not too great but it grows almost by itself, stripe by stripe if I just manage to keep my mind off the million or so yarn-ends that await weaving in in my future. It's a good thing that I like what it's becoming to, a good sweater to wear with jeans. I do not much care for knitting sleeves this way for the big lumpy thing in my lap hinders smooth knitting. And with that I do not mean the cat (which is not big at all anymore) but the rest of the sweater.

Neuleintoillessani olen unohtanut esitellä Ameriikan-tuliasiet. Keskellä möllöttää toinen parista, Mingiä Artfibersilta ja ympärille kääriytyvät Knitpicksin langat: Shimmer Stained Glass ja Glossia neljässä värissä. Glossin tulevaisuudessa odottaa kirjoneuleliivi, koneella neulottuna.

I noticed that I've forgotten to blog about my American yarns. Well, to correct that mistake, I present them here. In the middle is Ming from Artfibers and lounging around it are Knitpicks yarns, Shimmer in Stained Glass and Gloss in four colours. I see a fair-isle vest done with the machine in Gloss' future.

And last but not least, my birthday present, a new iPod. All 80 gbits of it. I named it Erwin.

Kuuma - Hot

On melkein liian kuuma neuloa. Mutta traumasukka on edennyt siihen pisteeseen että kantapäätä pitäisi tehdä. Lisäksi olen neulonut hiljalleen raitapaidan toista hihaa. Kyllä, olen tiedostanut että sitä ensimmäistäkin pitäisi hieman purkaa, mutta jahka saan toisen valmiiksi niin puran sen sitten. Kannattaa muuten kirjoittaa muistiinpanoja kun tekee flow-neuletta, mutta ei sitten kannata hukata niitä sen jälkeen.

It is almost too hot to knit. But the trauma-sock has progressed to the point where I should start the heel flap. At the same time I've slowly knitted the other sleeve of the striped sweater. Yes, I am aware that I should frog the first one a bit but I'll do that after I've finished the second one. It is a very good idea to make notes while knitting a flow-sweater but it is, however, not a good idea to lose the notes after.

Ehkä ei traumoja tänä kesäyönä - Maybe no traumas in this summer night

Ajattelin aloittaa uudet sukat Sockapalooza-tyylillä kun on vielä asiat tuoreessa muistissa. Valitsin nyt langaksi hieman ohuempaa, Opalin handpainted Sommernacthstraum-lankaa. Traumoja meinasikin tulla, sillä lanka on todella ihastuttavaa kerällä, mutta ei niin kaunista neulottuna, ainakin jos hiukan surffailee kuvia netistä. No, jotkut tykkää, mutta minä en. Pätkärääkättyjen ominaisuuksista siis. Päätin että tästä langasta ei tule sileitä sukkia, eli jotain pientä kuviota tarvitsee mutta lanka on kuitenkin aika tummaa joten ei mitään kauhean monimutkaista. Näistä kuitenkin näyttää tulevan ihan kivat, ehkä olen onnistunut keksimään mallin joka ei aiheuta läikittymistä tai siksak-kuvioita.

I thought I'd start a new pair of socks similar to the ones I sent to my sockapalooza-pal. I chose a bit thinner yarn this time, Opal's handpainted in Sommernichtstraum colourway (Mid summer night's dream). I've been closer to becoming traumatized with this yarn too, for the colours are really lovely but what I've seen on the net it shows all the typical troubles one might expect from a variegated yarn: pooling and zig-zagging. Well, some like them but I do not. So no plain vanilla sock pattern for this yarn, thank you. But the yarn is quite dark so anything too complicated is useless for it does not show. But so far so good. It seems I've come up with a pattern that doesn't show any ugliness so far.

Taloon tuli uusi jäsen: litteä näyttö. Se on aika iso ja kiva, tosin mitä nyt kissa eilen yöllä surffaillesani yritti normaaliin tapaan hypätä loikoilemaan monitorin päälle. Ei oikein enää onnistu, ei meidän 3.3 kiloinen rääpäleemmekään sentään pysy parin sentin kaitaleella. Niinpä monitori sanoi mukkelismakkelis ja kissa juoksi samantien pois ja jätti kiihdytysjälkiä työpöytään. Ehkäpä se ei enää yritä sitä uudestaan.

We got a new addition to the household: a flat screen monitor. It is quite big and nice, though last night while I was surfing the cat tried to jump on the monitor as usual. Not doable anymore, for even our 3.3 kg kittycat does not manage to lie comfortably (or uncomfortably) on a strip couple of centimeters wide so the monitor did a falling act and the cat did a vanishing act leaving acceleration marks on the desk. Maybe she won't try that again.

SP 11 questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

Well, I do like wool and wool mixes (like +silk, +cashmir for example), merino is always nice, silk too, and cashmir and such. I don't much care for cotton, but I have knitted with that too. Though, of course, Rowan Calmer is divine. I don't like acrylics and I don't care for mohair that much either. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a yarn snob sometimes.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I just bought a roll for my dpns and for my circulars I have a very nice wood box I bought from Krakow a while back.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

For ages. I learnt in school (like most girls here do) but I did not knit that much except the mandatory school things. But during the time I was in upper secondary school, I suddenly hand an urge to knit a sweater. Which I did. And I've been knitting ever since. I did have a few year's break at some point but after I discovered all the lovely knitterly things that internet can offer, I got my groove back.

As for skill level...I guess I'd call myself advanced minus. Not quite up to calling myself advanced though, lot to learn still.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I do, but I have not updated it for ages. So I guess it's pretty useless these days.

5. What's your favorite scent?

Umm...something fruity or citrusy. Don't like flower scents. Vanilla is nice too, if not too strong. I don't wear much scented things since I do not like strong scents. Mostly I use scented deodorant sticks or some mild body lotion. My current favourite is blackcurrant scented.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

Ooo, chocolate, definitely.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

Not much. I do dabble in card-making about once a year and I have tried felting but it's too much work. I do knit with a machine, though, that's a bit different than hand knitting.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

Well, there's over 3000 songs in my iPod at the moment, from Tchaikovski to Marilyn Manson. Not too heavy on the classical side though. And yes, my computer plays MP3s.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?

I tend to lean more towards cooler colours. Purples, reds, blues...you can pretty much see my colour world in my blog. I don't much care for brown or yellow. Orange is ok in some shades and green.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

Married, with cat.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Scarves and mittens yes. Hats when I'm forced to (when it's too cold, hats don't look good on me), ponchos no.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Don't really have one.

13. What are you knitting right now?

A stripey sweater and some socks.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

Yes, sure.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

Circular, metallic. Addis preferably, though lately I've knit more with my Options needles. Dpns metallic too. Bamboo is good with some yarns.

Yep, both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

Let's see...a couple of years (or three).

18. What is your favorite holiday?

Hhhhmmm....maybe Christmas. I don't like all the pre-Christmas fuss (although I like shopping for presents) but otherwise it's a nice holiday.

19. Is there anything that you collect?

Nope, not really. Although you could say I collect books since I do have plenty of them.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I just subscribed to Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits.
I would like to have a nice sock book with different heel and toe styles. Maybe Knitting on the Road? Victorian Lace Today also seems like a beautiful book. And Lingerie Style. Those came to mind.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?

Well, always.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yup. Umm...I have to get back on this one, but I wear European size 39.

Jotain valmista - Something finished

Ariann on nyt sitten valmis. Päättelin tänään pari unohtunutta langanpäätä ja kiinnitin napit. Inhoan nappien ompelua oikeastaan enemmän kuin vetoketjun ompelua. Näistä neljästäkin piti kiinnittää kaksi uudelleen kun ne tulivat vahingossa ensin väärään paikkaan.


Ariann is finally finished. I did away with a couple of forgotten yarn ends and attached the buttons. I hate sewing in buttons more than I do attaching the zipper. From these four I had to reattach two since I got them in the wrong place first time around.

Mitäpä tästä sanoisi...istuu hyvin eikä ole liian löysä, mutta siitä ne ongelmat sitten alkavat. Kiinnitys nimittäin tursahtelee ikävästi. Sellainen "kohta se nappi lentää"-look. Ei mitenkään kauhean mairitteleva, minusta. Pitäisköhän ommella tuo nappilista kiinni, vai mitä sitä tekisi? Tietysti tuo voi käytössä löystyäkin...lanka on Novitan Oliviaa (70% bambua ja 30% keinokuitua).

What to say...it fits quite well and is not too big but that's the trouble. The button-band does not behave nicely, as you can see. It has that "soon it's gonna fly off"-look to it. Not very becoming, I think. But what to do? I guess I could always sew the button band closed partly, for I don't think I'll be wearing this open that much anyway. Or I could wait and see if the cardi stretches with use. The yarn is Novita Olivia (70% bamboo, 30% plastic).

Viimeaikoina on elo tuntunut kovin hankalalta ja raskaalta mielelläni nukkuisin 24h vuorokaudessa. Ilmeisesti se enteili tätä, sillä nyt olen kotona jo toista päivää lievän kuumeilun ja vatsakivun armoilla.

Viikonloppuna ehdin sentään tehdä jotain, vaikka sänky olisikin (ja olikin) ollut todella kutsuva. Lauantaina kävin Sadun, Marjutin ja Eevan kanssa Riihimäellä kirpputorilla. Lankaa oli...järkyttävän paljon. Marjutilla on enemmän kuvia, minä otin vain tämän yhden, järkytyin liikaa. Kyllä, melkein kaikissa laatikoissa ja säkeissä oli lankaa ja tuossa oli vain osa. Varastossa on kuulemma liikaa. Varoituksen sana kaikille lankahamstereille, ehkä kannattaa hankkia apua ennenkuin tilanne pääsee tällaiseksi?

Lately life has seemed so heavy and I'd love to sleep all 24 hours of the day. Apparently it was a prelude to this, me being at home with a slight fever and sore stomach second day in a row.

I did manage to do something besides sleep during the weekend though the bed did call me most ardently. On Saturday I visited a secondhand shop in Riihimäki with Satu, Marjut and Eeva. And there was yarn, lots of it. Marjut has more photos, I only tool this one for I was too shocked. And yes, almost all of the boxes and plastic bags contained yarn. There was even more in storage. A word of warning for all yarn hogs, might be a good idea to seek help before it gets this bad.

Ja eihän tässä vielä mitään hätää...mukaan lähti vain tämän verran. Itse ostin vain pussin pussilankaa, tuntematonta, pääosin jotain villansukuista, mutta se on vielä Sadulla saunakäsittelyn jäljiltä. Koiperhosia, niitäkin siis löytyi, munina ja kuolleina yksilöinä. Surullista oikeastaan, se määrä - kaikkea.

No worries here, yet. This was the amount that the four of us took with us. I only got a 800g bag of some unidentified yarn, mostly something wool-like but it's not here yet due to a sauna-treatment. For we did encounter some moths, in the form of dead adults and eggs. Sad, really, all that amount of stuff one person accumulated.

On Sunday we became...guardians (I guess that is the best translation for non-religious godparents). My friend had had fun with baking and there was plenty on offer, I even brought home some. Isn't it pretty?

Lankaa siis. Kyseessä on Atelier Zitronin Kokon-lanka (35% silkki, 35% puuvilla, 30% akryyli). Ulkonäöltään se on aika puuvillan oloista, eli langan silkki ei ole kiiltävää laatua. Kerässä (50g) lankaa on noin 175 m ja puikkosuositus 3.5-4 mm. Valitettavasti ei ole nyt läähätyskuvaa tarjottavaksi, mutta esim. täällä on värikartta. Yarn that is. The yarn in question is Kokon from Atelier Zitron (35% silk, 35% cotton, 30% acrylic). It looks very much like cotton, meaning that the silk in the yarn is not the shiny kind. In a ball (50 g) of yarn there's 175g of the actual stuff and the recommended needle size is 3.5 - 4 mm. Unfortunately I don't have a drool-pic but for example here you can see the colour chart. I'm offering five balls of 15 (brick red) and one of 18 (grey). And if this raises interest outside Finland I'm open for a swap. Oh, and I do have a cat in the house.

Kotiin saapuessani minua odotti muhkea kirjekuori, jonka sisällä oli tämä.

When I got home today there was a very fat envelope waiting for me. Inside of which I found this.

Jonka sisältä taas löytyivät nämä: sitruunan tuoksuista saippuaa, melonin makuista huulirasvaa, muistikirja, kortti ja lankaa. Kirjavat ovat Spunky Eclecticin tuotantoa, väri Aztec ja sinertävä on Seacoast Handpainted Panda-sukkalankaa väriä Jewel.

Inside of which I found these: lemon verbana scentec soap, melon lipbalm, notebook, a card and some yarn. The colourful in the middle is Spunky Eclectic, colourway Aztec. The blue coloured one is Seacoast Handpainted Panda, in the Jewel colourway.

And the reason for the last yarn's small size and odd shape is above: my Sockapalooza 4 socks arrived today! The pattern is called Summer Solstice and they are absolutely lovely. Thank you Craftlilly! What a nice surprise.
