Herkkuja! Lankaa! Lomaa! Ihanaa!! - Goodies! Yarn! Holiday! Hooray!!

Hain pakettini postista tänään ja se oli se minkä arvasinkin, eli viimeinen lahja Secret Pal 11-kierroksella. Ja olipa lahja. Olin niin innoissani että unohdin ottaa kuvan alkutilanteesta, mutta tässä tilanne pikkupakettien avaamisen jälkeen.

I got my package today, and yes, it was as I suspected the last sp11 gift. And what a gift it was. In my frenzy to get it opened I forgot to take a photo before I opened all the individually wrapped packages but here's the situation straight after.

Lahjojani oli Diane Alaskasta. Siispä pakettikin oli kovin alaskahenkinen - ja kiinnostava. Sain Ghirardellin suklaata (tämä ei ole Alaskalaista mutta hyvää), joulupukkinenäliinoja, huulirasvaa (Alaskasta) ja pari saippuaa jossa on peräti lunta Alaskasta. Eksoottista. Saippua on varmasti hyvää.

My sp was Diane from Alaska. So the package was very Alaskan - and interesting. I got Ghirardelli chocolate (not from Alaska but good nonetheless), santa tissues, some Alaskan lip balm and soap, with Alaskan snow in them. Exotic. It must be good soap then.

Ja Arctic Lace-kirjan ja lankaa. Kaksi tummaa kerää ovat alaskalaista kashmiria, valittelen huonoa kuvaa mutta väri on muutenkin hiukan vaikea kuvattava, sellainen rusehtavan lila meleerattu. Sitä on noin 440 jaardia, vähän yli 55 g - ehkä em. kirja voisi olla hyödyksi mallinetsinnässä? Ja kerä joulunpunaista Lion Brandin puuvillalankaa ja teemapuikot.

And I got Arctic Lace book and yarn. The two dark balls are Alaskan kashmir. Sorry about the bad photo but the yarn in question is quite hard to photograph. The colour is best described as brownish violet. There's about 440 yards of it, 2 oz. I'm thinking the book they're on might help me with the pattern. And I got a ball of christmas red Lion Brand cotton and theme needles.

Kortin mukana oli vielä tämmöinen. Kokoontaitettava...ööö...lumisadepallo. Kaunis. Kiitoksia kivoista lahjoista Dianelle! Niitä oli aina mukava odottaa. On hiukan haikeaa että se on jo ohi. Itsekin laitoin viimeisen lahjan eteenpäin tällä viikolla.

And with the card I found this. A fold-away snow globe. It's beautiful. Thank you for the lovely gifts, Diane! They were always nice surprises. It's a bit sad that it's over, this round I mean. I sent my last gift onwards this week too.

Mutta asiasta toiseen. Valmistelut on tehty. Vietän seuraavat 11 yötä matkalla, matkakohteena tämä ja Malediivit siis. Olen valmis (ei narubikinejä minulle).

But on to another matter. I'm going to be gone for the next 11 nights and I'm going here. Maldives that is. I'm ready (no string bikinis for me).

Namusia! - Goodies!

Eilen oli hyvä päivä. Ostin uudet kengät ja ehdin vielä jumppaankin (vaihteeksi jotain hieman naisellisempaa).

Yesterday was a good day. I bought a pair of shoes and still managed to be on time at the gym (something a bit more feminine for a change).

Mutta ei siinä vielä kaikki. Kotona lattialla odotti kaunis kukkakuosinen kirjekuori jonka sisällä olivat nämä. Sekä hiukan suklaata ja kovia piparminttukarkkeja. Ne eivät mahtuneet kuvaan, koska söin suklaat heti (röyh) ja piparminttunapit eivät enää olleet kääreessään (mutta niitä sentään en syönyt heti). Mutta muuten siellä oli siis uusin Interweave Knits-lehti, vyyhti sukkalankaa (Zenstring Bambewe väriä Amethyst, 60% merinoa, 30% babmua ja 10% nailonia), kiva kortti (neulojalle neuloja totta kai), Knitpicksin puupuikot ja purkista löytyy bee bar - tavallaan kiinteä vartalovoide.

Ihana paketti, kiitos salaiselle ystävälle! Lanka on todella kauniin väristä ja pehmeää - tekisi mieli heti aloittaa siitä sukat, ja noita Knitpicksin puikkoja olinkin vähän silmäillyt. Ja täytyy sanoa, se todellakin ovat paljon kauniimmat luonnossa. Mehiläispuikko menee kyllä heti käyttöön kuvia kantapäitäni sulostuttamaan. Mutta, täytyy sanoa, että tämän ansiosta kiinnostukseni tavallisiin sukkalankoihin vähenee kyllä kovasti.

But that is not all. When I got home after the dance session, I found a lovely floral-print envelope waiting for me. My Secret Pal had sent me another gift. There were also some chocolate inside, but they didn't make their way into the picture since I ate them straight away, and also some hard peppermint candy, but since they were not in the package by this time I left them out too (and no, I did not eat them straight away). But what got into the photo is this: the latest Interweave knits, a skein of lovely sock yarn (Zenstring Bambewe in Amethyst, 60% merino, 30% bamboo, 10% nylon), a cute card (a knitter for a knitter), a set of Knitpick's Harmony dpns and in the yar is a bee bar - sort of like a solid body lotion.

Lovely packet, thanks so much SP! The yarn has really beautiful colours and it is so soft - I'd like to start knitting it straight away and I had been eyeing the Knitpicks needles. Now I can try them, and I must say, the colours are much nicer than it seems by looking at the website. The bee bar came in handy since I have quiet dry feet. Though, I must say, thanks to this my interest in normal sock yarns is even less than it was before.

Herkkuja - Goodies

Jei, salaiselta kamulta tuli paketti. Tiesin sen tulosta jo viime viikolla, mutta mokoma juuttui tulliin joten sitä piti säätää - en todellakaan ehdi HKI-Vantaan lentokentälle joskus virka-aikaan (täytyy tehdä töitä, nääs) ja sitten piti pantata sitä pakettikorttia torstaihin asti kun olin menossa kaupunkiin muutenkin. Mutta mikäpäs sen hauskempaa, eikö se odotus ole puoli huvia?

Yay, my Secret Pal sent me a package. I knew it was here last week when I got the notice from the customs. But since it arrived at Helsinki-Vantaa and I did not want to go there nor did I have that much chances of going there when it was open (one must work to earn the money to buy yarn, you see) I had to arrange for it to be sent to Helsinki center. Then I waited until Thursday when I was planning to go to town anyway, and don't they say that anticipation is half the fun?

Minä kuitenkin sain vastinetta odotukselleni, tosin olisittepa kuulleet sen tullivirkailijan äänensävyn kun se näki paketin sisällön. "Jaahah" oli kommentti...ilmeisesti nainen ei siis neulonut. No, eipä tarvinnut kauaa siellä aikaa viettää. Mutta paketista paljastui herkkää keväisen väristä Yarn Love Juliet-lankaa väriä nimeltä Grace, Brittanyn eko-sormikaspuikot (viiden vuoden takuulla, mitä se sitten kattaakaan), vihreää teetä ja puinen avaimenperä, sellainen sukamuotoinen puupala jolle voi neuloa sukan peitoksi (sock blocker ulkomaaksi). En nyt tiedä olenko outo vai mitä, mutta mieleen nousi heti erilaisia minisukkavaihtoehtoja joita voisi tehdä ja vaihdella sitten aina juhlan ja vuodenajan kunniaksi...miten olisi suomenlippuminisukka? Tai joulunpunainen jouluminisukka? Ja keväänvihreän sukkalangan jämistä kevätsukka - minulla nimittäin aina jää lankaa jonkinverran yli? Isänmaallinen siniristilippusukka? Mutta alla on kuitenkin kuva. Tuo langan väri on suhteellisen oikea. Sitä oli hankala saada tallentumaan muistikortille, todellisuudessa se on hieman raikkaampi. Mutta ihku paketti kuitenkin. Ai, ja oli siellä Ghirardellin suklaaneliökin, mutta unohdin sen jo koska se syötiin (emmävaanmitäänmääoonihanviaton). Olenko minä nyt sitten Warteenotettava neuloja kun minulla on eko-puikot? Anonillihän minulla on jo ;-)

But I got quite adequate gratification too, not instant but what can you do. Though you should have heard the custom official's voice when she saw the inside of the parcel: "ookay" in a very disinterested voice. I guess she wasn't a knitter then. Quick trip it was. But I was far from disinterested, I can tell you. Inside the package I found a skein of spring-coloured Yarn Love Juliet sock yarn in Grace colourway, a set of "sustainably harvested domestic birch hardwood, made in Northern California" Brittany glove needles (though, what does the 5 year replacement guarantee mean?), a travel tin of Orange Spice Green Tea and Sock Blocker keychain (very appropriate, being baltic wood and all). Am I odd or just a peculiar when I straight away started thinking of different "clothes" for the keychain? You know, red for the christmas time, a blue-white one for our independence day, leftovers from the springy sock yarn for a spring attire (I always have some leftovers from sockyarns). But above is a photo. I played with photoshop and I got the colours almost right. In real life the colours are a bit more fresh but the colourway was hard to get to stick to the memory card. But a very lovely packet nonetheless. Oh, I almost forgot, there was a Ghirardelli square in there too, but I ate it already. Am I a Proper knitter now that I have "organic" needles?

Ja viimeisenä vain kaunis kuva. Ostelin innokkaasti euron hedelmiä ja pistin ne vatiin. Tässäpä syötävää (ja antioksidantteja)!

And last just a pretty picture. A chain of grocery stores had a campaign, fruits for one euro (a kilo, a package or a piece, whichever was appropriate). I got a bit carried away and bought lovely fruit aplenty and put them into a bowl. What a treat.

Ei kauhean pehmeä lasku - Not a very soft landing

Takaisin työelämään siis. Nyt on vasta keskiviikko ja jo meinaa stressautua.

Olin lomalla siis viime viikon ja matkakohteena oli tällä kertaa vaihteeksi kotimaa. Ajelimme parina päivänä saariston rengastietä (täällä lisää infoa). Olimme yötä Nauvossa ja jatkoimme sitten seuraavana päivänä kierrosta loppuun. Ilmat nyt olivat suhteellisen ok, keskiviikko oli ihan kiva ja torstaina tuli satunnaisia sadekuuroja. Maisemat olivat kauniit, mutta selvästi sesonki oli jo loppunut ja olisimme ihan hyvin voineet kääntyä Korppoosta takaisin, loppumatkassa ei ollut mitään ihmeellistä. Minua kiinnosti mm. Stentorpin lammastila, jossa poikkesimmekin. Lampaita kyllä näin, mutta en sitten mitään muuta. Nettisivujen mukaan paikan olisi pitänyt olla ilman ennakkosoittoa auki elokuun loppuun asti 12-18 mutta eipä ollut ainakaan silloin kun me siellä kävimme. Hmph ja pöh sanon minä.

Back to work life that is. It is only Wednesday and I'm already starting to think I have too much to do.

I had last week off and for a change we travelled in Finland. We drove around the archipelago ring-road for a couple of days. We spent a night in Nauvo and then continued the next day. The weather was quite ok, Wednesday was nice and sunny and on Thursday there was occasional showers. The scenery was beautiful but it seemed that the season had ended already and we could have gone back from Korppoo since there was pretty much nothing from that point on. I was interested in Stentorp sheep farm where we stopped. I did see some sheep but not much else. According to the web pages it was supposed to be open from 12-18 until the end of August without any advance booking but apparently it was not so. Hmph, I say.

Mutta Kustavin savipaja oli sentään auki. Siellä oli villisikoja, agressiivisen oloinen pupu ja lampaita. Olipa siellä lankaakin, mutta se oli sitä ihan normaalia kauppakamaa joten mitään ei tarttunut mukaan (olin vähän haaveillut jostain erikoisemmasta). Lisäksi näimme vanhoja kivikirkkoja runsaasti.

But the Kustavi pottery factory was open. They had wild boars, an aggressive bunny and some sheep. They even had some yarn there, but since it was the normal store kind I passed it (I had been hoping for something a bit more handycrafty). And we saw medieval stone churches aplenty.

Neulontarintamalle ei kuulu mitään uutta ja ihmeellistä. Lomaviikon aikana sain neulottua vain kantalapun sukkaan (en nähtävästi ole hyvä autoneuloja). Mutta raitapaita-raukassa on taas kaksi hihaa, tällä kertaa samanlaisia. Nyt vaan kaulusta tekemään ja on paita, juuri sopivasti kun säät viilenevät. Lisäksi Salaisen ystävän paketti odottaa tullipostissa.

Nothing very exciting going on at the knitting front. During my week off I only knitted a heel flap for a sock (apparently I'm not much of a car-knitter). But the stripey sweater has two sleeves again and this time they even match. Now it's just the collar and I have a sweater just in time too for the weather has turned cool. Also my Secret Pal's package is waiting for me at the customs.

Mysteeriä kerrakseen - Have I got a mystery for you

Postilaatikko kolahti lupaavasti tänään ja siellä se oli, ensimmäinen kirje salaiselta ystävältäni. Kirje on lähtetetty USA:sta 20. pvä ja nyt siis tuli. Sisältä löytyi pirteä auringonkukkakortti...

The mailbox clonked promisingly today and yes, there it was. A letter from my SP. It was sent from the States on 20th and inside I found a cheerful sunflower card...

...ja suklaata. Totta, tämä ei ole suosikkini Ghirardellin suklaista, mutta hyvää silti. Voiko pahaa suklaata olla olemassakaan?? Ai, voi. Varsinkin marsipaanitäytteinen. Ugh.

...and a chocolate square. True, it is not my favourite amongst the Chirardelli selection but good nonetheless. Is there even such a thing as bad chocolate? Oh, wait, yes there is. Especially if it is filled with marzipan. Yuck.

Mutta tässä seuraava salaisuus. Riihimäeltä tarttui mukaan pussi yllärilankaa. Todennäköisesti siis Novitaa, nehän niitä harrastavat tehtaanmyymälässään. Se oli Sadulla lämpökäsittelyssä ja eilen ryhdyin toimiin. Tässä vaiheessa kaikki näyttää hyvältä.

But here's the next mystery. From Riihimäki I got a bag of mystery yarn. It was in a clear plastic bag without any identifying marks so it is probably Novita yarn, since they sell their odds and ends like that in the factory outlet. It was with Satu enjoying a nice, long sauna and I got it last week. Yesterday I decided to deal with it. In this stage everything looks promising.

Ja vielä tässäkin. Lanka on kaunista lilaa, hieman meleerattua.

And here too. The yarn is a lovely purple, slightly heathered.

Mutta karu tilanne paljastui ennenpitkää. Urakkaan meni tuntikausia ja vieläkin on jonkinlainen takkupesä selvitettävänä. Lankaahan oli pussin merkinnän mukaan kuitenkin noin 800g ja se ei ole kauhean paksua. Hermot meinasi mennä välillä. Ja menikin. Onneksi väri on sentään kaunis, muuten tämä olisi löytänyt uuden kodin taloyhtiön roskalaatikosta alte aikayksikön.

But the situation revealed itself in all its ugliness quite soon. It took me hours to untangle this mess and I still have some left to deal with. After all, the bag said there was 800 grams of this stuff and it is not that thick. If the colour wasn't so lovely this mess would have found a new home at our garbage can sooner than later.

Mutta sitkeydessä on palkintonsakin. Kauniita lankakeriä syntyi vähitellen.

But perseverance had its rewards and I got nice yarn balls eventually.

Mutta nyt herää kysymys, mitä lankaa tämä on? Kysynkin teiltä josko löytyy Wanhan Novitan tuntijoita (tai ainakin lankakartan omaajia). Lanka on Florican oloista kierteeltään, mutta ei mielestäni ole sitä (hiplailuvertailu antoi negatiivisen tuloksen, sekä uuden että vanhan Florican kanssa). Polttokokeen perusteella kyseessä on jos ei 100% eläinkuitu niin hyvin lähellä sitä (ei kuulemma pala samalla tavalla kuin 7-veljestä jossa keinokuitua on 25%). Käsituntuma on liukas, melkein saippuamainen. Ensin ajattelin että se olisi alpakkaa, mutta alla on vertailun vuoksi lanka kuvattu Novitan alpakan kanssa eikä se ole samanlaista. Kierteet erottuvat selvemmin. Langassa on kuitenkin alpakkamaisia hetaleita, eli sellaisia vaaleita kovempia kuituja jotka irtoilevat käsittelyssä. Ai, ja sitten se on vielä meleerattua. Hmm...sanoo hän ja ihmettelee. Onks kellään...ideoita siis?

But now the question is what yarn is this? According to the burn test it is if not 100% animal fiber then very close to it (for it does not burn like a wool yarn with 25% plastic in it). It feels very slick, almost soapy, like alpaca. I thought it'd be that but then I compared it with Novita's old Alpaca yarn and it does not quite feel or look like it. So I'm hoping someone has knowledge of old Novita yarns (or at least a colour chart) has some ideas.
