Pussittaako? - Is That a Purse in Your Pants or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Jotain uutta on aina kiva kokeilla ja kävinkin Espoon työväenopiston parilla korukurssilla. Lupaavasti alkanut hopeasepän urani katkesi kuitenkin lyhyeen, kun lähes kaikki kelloseppäopistolla järjestettävät kurssit siirrettiin maanantaipäiviin. Aika epäkäytännöllistä näin toimistotyöntekijällekin, kun se työnantaja mokoma tykkäisi että olisin päivällä töissä enkä korukursseilla.

I always enjoy trying out new crafty things and the latest new thing has been jewelley classes. My promising career as a silver smith was cut short, however, because most of the classes in the most convenient place for me got shifted to Mondays during office hours. Which is not very practical for a white collar worker such as I for the employer prefers that I spend office hours at work and not practicing the fine art of jewellery making.

Jotain muuta sitten piti keksiä ja kahlasin työväenopiston sivuja miettien mitä tekisi. Neulekonekurssilla jatkan totta kai, eli joku lyhyt arki-iltaisin tai viikonloppuisin oleva kurssi oli sitä mitä kaipasin. Valinta tuli tehtyä ja pääsin kurssillekin. Ja sitten ei kuin tarvikkeita ostamaan.

So I had to find something else to try. I'm continuing with the machine knitting classes so something short, some weekday evenings or a weekend or two sounded optimal. I made my choice and managed to get on the class too. After that it was time to shop for supplies.

Valintani osui kehyskukkaro- ja pussukkakurssille, joka oli nyt viikonloppuna lauantaina ja sunnuntaina. Kurssiaikaa oli molempina päivinä 10-16 mutta kaiken tutkiskelun ja pohdiskelun ja hitaan mutta huolellisen ompelun seurauksena valmistui vain kaksi kukkaroa ja yksi pala vetoketjupussukkaa.

Tässä on se elämäni ensimmäinen kehyskukkaro. Kehyksen leveys on 18 cm, päälliskankaana värikkäitä pöllöjä luonnonvaalealla pohjalla, sisällä sininen kiemurakangas (kangaskuvassa valaiden ja pilkkujen välissä). Eihän tuo nyt ihan täydellinen ole - ensin onnistuin laittamaan kehyksen väärin päin, onneksi huomasin sen heti enkä vasta liimautumisen jälkeen. Sitten kehykseen tuli sisäpuolelle lommo, mutta se ei toimintaa haittaa. Kuitenkin se on mielestäni hieno ja mahtava.

My choice was a class for frame and other purses. It was this weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, 10-16 on both days. But since I'm quite slow at sewing and there was so much to see and learn I only managed to make two frame purses and one part of a zipper purse.

The above photo is of the first frame purse I've ever made. The frame is 18 cm wide and the fabric on the outside is multicoloured owls on cream. Inside is a turquoise-blue swirly fabric (on the fabric photo between whales and dots). It's nowhere near perfect - I first managed to almost glue the frame on the wrong way round but luckily I noticed it before it had stuck. Then I made a dent on the frame on the inside but it doesn't stop it from working. Still, I think it's just fine and perfect.

Toinen pussukka on viikonlopun aiheeseen sopivaa kellanvihreää hämähäkkikangasta. Sisältä löytyy suunnilleen saman väristä pilkkukangasta. Ylläoleva pussi on tehty nyöritekniikalla ja pussissa ei ole ommeltu varsinaista pohjaa. Tämä taas on tehty hieman eri tavalla, pussitekniikalla, tosin tähänkin tuli nyöriä, hieman ohuempaa, paperinarua, koska käyttämäni kankaat olivat hieman ohuehkoja. Lisäksi tähän tuli pohja. Pussi on tehty myös 18 cm kehykseen ja on suunnilleen saman syvyinen kuin mitä sillä on leveyttä. Tästä pitää vielä litistellä kehyksen reuna, en ehtinyt sitä kurssilla tehdä kun liimaus jäi hieman myöhäiseksi.

The other purse is from a material fitting for this weekend - chartreuse with black spiders. Inside is a polka-dot fabric of about the same colour. The owl purse was made with chord technique and it does not have a bottom as such, just two pieces sewn together. This one is made a bit differently and has a sort of flat bottom. Though, I had to use chord for this one too for the fabrics I used were a bit on the thin side. The purse is also made with 18 cm wide frame and is about as high as it is wide. I still have to flatten the frame for I did not have time to do that on the class for I wanted to let the glu time to dry properly.

Kotitöiksi jäi kehyksen littaamisen lisäksi loppujen vetoketjupussukan osien ompeleminen - en viitsinyt laittaa siitä keskeneräisestä kuvaa. Lisäksi kehyskukkaroita voin tehdä vielä pari, pienemmät 8 cm kehykset jäivät ompelematta. Enköhän ne tässä saa tehtyä, sillä pidin näpertelystä eikä se ompelukonekaan niin huonosti käyttäytynyt.

Besides flattening the frame and finishing the rest of the zipper purse (I did not want to put a photo of it here unfinished) I have two more frames as homework. The course included 4 frames, 2 18 cm and 2 8 cm and I still have the smaller ones unused. I think I will make them soonish, for I liked the purse-making and the sewing machine behaved quite nicely, this time.

Työkaluja - Tools of the Trade

Addin pitsipuikoissa on mukavan terävä kärki ja käyttäisin niitä mielelläni enemmän. Minä ja puikot emme kuitenkaan ole yhteensopiva pari, sillä minun käsittelyssäni ne haisevat ja tummuvat. Tämä on ilmeisesti riippuvainen henkilöstä ja ihosta, minä nyt kuulun niihin joille nuo puikot eivät niin hyvin sovi. Olen niitä kuitenkin käytellyt, tarvittaessa, paremman puutteessa.

Ravelryssä joku taannoin mainitsi Chiagoon pitsipuikot. Otinkin asiasta selvää ja tilasin kokeeksi kolmet puikot, mallia Red Lace, 2.75, 3.25 ja 3.5 mm koossa. Puikot ovat ruostumatonta terästä, niiden ei siis pitäisi haista. Vielä en ole ehtinyt niitä testaamaan, joten en osaa käyttömukavuudesta kertoa mitään. Mikä hieman harmittaa on koot - US -kokovalikoimassa ei ole 3 mm puikkoa ollenkaan. Mutta, valmistajalta on niitä kyselty, että josko se sieltä jossain vaiheessa tulee. Ja kyllä, 0.25 on joskus se merkittävä ero.

Addi lace needles have a nice, sharp tip and I would like to use them more. However, me and the needles are not compatible, for in my hands they start to smell and tarnish. These things apparently depend on the person and skin and such, I just happen to be one not suited to Addi Lace needles. I've used them, though, when needed, in lack of a better option.

In Ravelry somebody mentioned Chiagoo needles and I got interested. I looked into those and promptly ordered Red Lace needles in three different sizes, 2.75, 3.25 and 3.5 mm. The needles are stainless steel so they should not smell. I just got them so I haven't had time to test them yet so I can't comment on that. One thing that bugs me though is that there is no 3.0 mm needle for the needles are sized on US sizes. But the manufacturer has got requests for that size so maybe we'll get that too. And yes, sometimes 0.25 is the crucial difference.

Seuraavat puikot kuuluvat ihan pelkkään hifistelykategoriaan. Surffailin uteliaisuudesta erilaisia puikkovalmistajia ja pohdinkin hieman Signaturen sukkapuikkoja. Värikästä, anodisoitua alumiinia, kuulostaa mielenkiintoiselta. Mutta, valikoimista ei löydy suosikkipuikkokokoani 2 mm (liian ohut alumiinista tehtäväksi) - kyllä, taas se ratkaiseva 0.25 mm ero - ja lisäksi ne ohuimmat ovat vielä vihreät. Ei ole ihan suosikkivärini se, ainakaan tuollaisena perusvihreänä. Jäivät siis kauppaan.

Celtic Swan Forge tekee kivan näköisiä sukkapuikkoja myös. Mutta, messinki...hajuongelma? (löysin mielenkiintoisen artikkelin). Hopea...juu, kivat kiiltävät, mutta toisaalta hieman hintavat ja hopea suhteellisen pehmeänä metallina olisi varmaan minun käsittelyni jälkeen aika solmussa. Taivuttelen metalli- ja puupuikot mutkalle ja bambuisia ohuita puikkoja minulle ei kannata antaa kun katkon ne. Ei siis ehkä ihan nappivalinta minulle nekään.

Sitten löytyi Blackthorn ja nyt minulla on hiilikuitupuikot. Mustat, himmeäkiiltoiset, kevyet mutta toisaalta jämäkät. Aloitin näillä raitasukkia tänään - hyvin tuntuu neuoutuvan. Kärjet tosin ovat jotenkin hassut, pyöreähköt mutta kuitenkin keskeltä terävät. Muoto voisi olla hieman terävämpi kärjestä kauttaaltaan, kärkilevennykset ovat välillä hankalia epämääräisellä (Noron) sukkalangalla. Alkufiilikset kuitenkin tässä vaiheessa vielä positiiviset. Ulkonäkö on hauska, kuin neuloisi lyijykynän ytimillä.

These needles are purely in the "posh tools" -category. I surfed around the web for needles for I wanted something a bit different. I thought about Signature dpn's, colourful, anodized aluminium, what's not to like? But they don't make my favourite 2 mm size (apparently that is too thin to make out of aluminium) and the 2.25, well, it's the crucial 0.25 mm difference again. Besides, they're green, not really in my ten top favourite colours category. Now, if they were blue or purple I might consider.

Celtic Swan Forge makes nifty-looking dpn's. But...brass - smell and tarnish problem? (I found an interesing article). Sterling silver - nice and shiny, but a bit pricey. And, silver being a bit on the soft side might not be ideal for me in 2 mm size for I do tend to bend what is bendable and break what is breakable (2 mm bamboos a casualty so far). Not necessarily for me those either.

Then I came across Blackthorn and now I have carbon fibre needles. Black, subtly shiny, light but somehow sturdy. I started to knit some stripey socks today with them. The tips are a bit funny, rounded but still somehow sharp in the very tip. The overall shape of the whole tip could be a bit longer and pointier, toe increases can be a bit tricky with uneven (Noro) yarn. First impression positive so far. Like the look, it's like knitting with pencil cores.

Menneitä - Past Things

Olin minäkin siellä, retriitissä, tässä kuun alussa. Kamera oli mukana, mutta pysyi laukussa.

I was there, at the knitting retreat, at the beginning of the month. I had my camera with me but it stayed in my bag at the room the whole time.

Tällä kertaa ei järjestettyä ohjelmaa ollut, mutta en kaivannut kursseja - en ole aiemmalla kahdella kerrallakaan ollut missään. Lankalotto olisi toki ollut ihan hauska, mutta kun ei tuota arpaonnea suuremmalti ole, niin olisin kuitenkin saanut jotain akryyliä.

This time there was no organized program but I did not miss the courses for I have not taken any the two times I've been there previously. Yarn lottery would have been nice but since I don't have much luck with raffles I would probably ended up with some acrylic.

Samaan aikaan kurssitelleet voimavarakouluttajat tarjosivat kyllä rentoutustuokion, ja olinkin siitä ensin kiinnostunut. Kunnes kuulin että aiheena oli naiseuden voimauttaminen ja päätin olla menemättä. Ja hyvä, sillä jälkeenpäin kuulin sisäisistä jumalattarista ja muista, en ehkä olisi voinut olla nauramatta rento.

Some empowerment trainers had a course there at the same time and they offered us a relaxation excercises and I was interested at first. But then I heard that the subject was something about empowering our womanhood and I decided not to take part in it. Which was a good decision, for after I heard that they searched their inner goddess I probably would not have lasted the whole excercise without laughing.

Lankakirppis ja "ota tästä"-pöytä löytyivät kyllä. Vein kirppikseen pari lankaa - ja toin ne takaisin kotiin. Lahjoituspöytään vein muovikassillisen ylijäämälankoja ja vaikka en sitä punninnutkaan niin arvioin että vein sinne enemmän lankaa kuin mitä toin mukanani.

There was a "for sale" and "take whatever you want"-tables. I took couple of yarns there for sale - and ended up bringing them back home. For the "take what you want"-table I took a plastic bag full of odds and ends. It's too bad I forgot to weigh the bag, but I still think I left with few yarn than I went there with.

Ja koska en halunnut viettää koko retriittiä neuloen pelkkää karkkiväristä angoraa, niin aloitin toisen retriittineuleen. Jared Floodin Bridgewaterin. Siinä neulotaan puoli ikuisuutta ainaoikeaa neliötä kulmasta kulmaan - juuri sopivaa höpötystaustaneulontaa. Pääsin hieman yli puoliväliin. Lankana Knitpicksin Shadow värissä Vineyard.

And because I did not want to spend the whole weekend knitting just candy-coloured angora I decided to start a new knit. Jared Flood Bridgewater. You start it by knitting a garter-stitch square from corner to corner and it takes about forever. Just simple enough to knit while talking. I managed to knit a bit over half the square. The yarn is Knitpicks Shadow in Vineyard.

Pimenevää - Getting Darker

Menemme taas lujaa vauhtia kohti pimeää vuodenaikaa enkä ole vielä osannut totuttautua siihen että viikolla ei voi kotioloissa ottaa neulekuvia. Ne pitää joko raahata töihin ja hämmästyttää, kummastuttaa kolleegoja (eikä muutenkaan kätevää isompien neuleiden kanssa) tai muistaa ottaa tarpeeksi kuvia viikonloppuna. Koska totuttelu kestää aikaa niin on tullut hieman taukoa blogaukseen.

Eipä silti, en tässä ole kummepia tehnyt, kun osa neulepuuhista ei vielä oikein kestä päivänvaloa. Mutta, neuloin muutaman tiskirätin. En itselle kun en osaa niitä edelleenkään oikein käyttää, vaan vaihtoon - tiskiräteistä Swarovski-nappeja. Ei huonoi diili ollenkaan. Pääsinpä eroon vielä muutamasta jämäkerästäkin. Tässä köllättelee loput Gedifran Fifty-fifty-puuvillasekoitelangasta, hamppulankaa, pellavan jämiä ja puuvilla-bambua. Näiden jälkeen valmistui vielä yksi jonka pintaneuleesta pidin kovasti mutta ehdin luovuttaa sen eteenpäin ennenkuin muistin ottaa siitä kuvan.

We're going fast towards the darkest time of the year and I haven't got used to the fact that I can't take any knit photos at home. I either have to take them to work with me (not very convenient with bigger knits) or take enough during the weekend. Since I haven't really got the hang of this until now, hence the delay in blogging.

Not that I've done that much since I can't really show all my knits here yet. But I made a deal with a fellow knitter - she wanted some dishcloths and was willing to part with some buttons to get those. I chose to partake in the challenge and got Swarovski buttons for my troubles. Not bad - I got sparkly things and also made something useful out of odds and ends. In the above photos are all but one of the discloths. There's the left-over Gedifra Fifty-fifty cotton mix, some hemp and linen and also some cotton-bamboo. After these were finished I made one more which I of course forgot to photograph. And that was the one that had the texture I liked the most and am thinking of using in a knit.

Kävin uuden neulekaupan avajaisissa ja ostin pari vyyhtiä. Handun gimaltavaa erikoista ja Frog Treen Pediboota. Sukkia varmaan näistä joskus tulossa, värit ovat sen verran räimeitä vaikkakin kauniita, etten niistä tuskin muuta pidettävää tee.

A new knit shop opened a few weeks ago and I was there too. I bought couple of skeins of yarn, Handu's glittering Winter Special and Frog Tree Pediboo. Nice colours, but a bit loud, so socks these will be.

Olenpa saanut jotain valmiiksikin, mutta en kauhean tyytyväinen ole. Radiance shawl tuli tehtyä, mutta taidanpa epätehdä - purkaa siis - sen. Mokoma on kovin pieni.

I have finished something, but I'm not very happy about it. I finished Radiance Shawl, but I think I'm going to frog it for it turned out very small.

Mokoma on vain 45 senttiä korkea eikä kovin leveäkään. Enkä usko pingoittamisen tekevän mitään niin ihmeitä että tuosta pidettävä tulisi. Tuollainen puoliympyrämalli kun pitäisi olla sen verran iso että sen saisi mukavasti harteille kiedottua. Tuon pitäisi olla aika paljon isompi että se onnistuisi. Lisäksi lankaa jäi noin 1.5 vyyhtiä yli, mielelläni voisin nekin kuluttaa. Mietin sitäkin että olisin purkanut vain viimeisimpään lisäyskerrokseen asti, mutta jotenkin meni maku koko huivista. Ennemmin keksin jotain muuta.

The darned thing is only 45 cm high and not that wide either. And I do not believe that blocking will change the situation so dramatically for this type of shawl needs to be wide enough to sit comfortably around the shoulders. Also I had about 1.5 skeins of yarn left over. I thought about ripping just the last increase row and continuing with the shawl but I have somehow lost the "taste" of it. I'd rather just knit something else.

Aivotonta huivineulontaa - Knitting Brainless Scarves

Flunssaisena sitä haluaa neuloa aivottomia neuleita, joten lähinnä miittineuleena ollut Radiance Shawl edistyi hyvin. Päätin valita päättelyvaihtoehdoista sen työläämmän, eli teen nyppyjä. Niitä olenkin tehnyt jo useamman päivän, kun kauaa moista tappotylsää työtä ei jaksa tehdä: luo neulomalla kaksi silmukkaa, päätä viisi - toista ikuisuuksia.

Hiukan harmittaa että olin muistanut väärin ostamieni vyyhtien määrän. Jopa blogiin olin kirjannut ostaneeni noita BC Garnin Silkbloom Extra Fino-vyyhtejä kolme ja valitsin ohjeen sen mukaan. Mutta kun kaivelin loput vyyhdit kätköistä niin eiköhän niitä sitten ollutkin neljä. Tein kuitenkin huivia ohjeen mukaan, kun en ole aiemmin puolipyöreitä (tai minkäänlaisia pyöreitä) huiveja neulonut, niin en luottanut flunssapääni kykyyn jatkaa huivia järkevästi. Mutta nyt minulle sitten jää ylimääräistä lankaa yli yhden vyyhdin verran, sillä huiviin menee vain vajaat kolme.

When I have a flu I want to do some brainless knitting - if I want to knit at all that is. So the Radiance Shawl I've done mainly at knit meets progressed nicely. I decided to choose the trickier bind-off, the picot edge that is. That I've done for several days already, for now that I'm somewhat recovered it is too mind-numbing to do for longer periods of time: add two stitches using knitted method, bind-off five stitches, repeat ad infinitum.

I do feel a bit irritated with myself, though, for I had remembered incorrectly the amount of skeins I had bought. I even wrote here that I got three skeins of this BC Garn Silkbloom Extra Fino and that is the amount I used when choosing the pattern. But, when I went to my stash to dig out the rest of the skeins I found that I had bought four. I did, however, knit the shawl as instructed for I haven't done any circular designs previously and I did not trust my stuffy head to be able to continue the pattern in any sensible way. But now I have one and plus extra skeins of the yarn for the shawl doesn't even take three skeins to make.

Koska aivoton miittineule on hyvä olla olemassa, aloitin uuden. Lai-lai-lai Yarnzin Bad Things-klubin viimeinen klubilanka oli aika...eksoottisen värinen. Yhdistelmä on myös aika haastava kuvattavaksi ja todellisuudessa langan vihreä on aika sellaista heleää rairuohonvihreää. Värin nimi on Original Sin, mutta minusta se ei ole todellakaan yhtään syntisen väristä vaan mieleen tulee ennemmin lapset ja karkit. Koska materiaali on kuitenkin mielenkiintoista, 100 % angoraa, niin halusin neuloa tämän kuitenkin. Mutta koska väriyhdistelmä ei todellakaan ole yhtään minua, menee huivi lahjaksi.

Mallineuleen nappasin tästä, mutta käytän isompia puikkoja ja lisäsin silmukkamäärää. Tämä sopii hyvin aivottomaksi miittineuleeksi. Lanka karvaa kyllä jonkinverran, sen huomaa hyvin jos päällä on mustat housut - ja myös naaman kutinasta. Ei tosin mitään hirveitä määriä että kyllä tuota neulomaan pystyy.

Since a brainless knit-meet is a good thing to have, I had to start a new one. The third package in Lai-lai-Yarnz Bad Things club had a skein of yarn in a very...excotic colourway. The combination is also quite challenging to photograph, so the green in the above photo is not really accurate - it is much more brighter grass green in real life. The colourway is called Original Sin, but it does not seem very sinful to me, rather it brings to mind colourful candies and kids. However, since the material was interesting, 100% angora, I wanted to knit it anyway. But because the colours are so not me this will be a gift.

I got the stitch pattern from this, but I'm using larger needles and I have more stitches. A good brainless knit is this. The yarn does shed somewhat, it's really noticeable when wearing black trousers and the fluffy bits do itch my face a bit. But it's not too bad, I can knit it just fine.

Mitä tein kesälomalla - What I Did on My Summer Holidays

Kolmas ja viimeinen kesälomaviikko käynnistyi tänään - vietin viikon jo heinäkuussa. Loma alkoi lomamatkalla, kuinkas muutenkaan. Huomasin näin jälkikäteen ottaneeni todella vähän valokuvia. Syitä oli lähinnä kaksi: jos olin yksikseni satoi ja jos en ollut niin mies hoiti valokuvaushommat. Sillä kun on kaikenmaailman pelit ja vermeet (digijärkkäri) ja mulla on vaan Ixus-pokkari.

Tällä kertaa vuorossa oli keski-Skotlannin kiertomatka. Matkamme alkoi 5.9 iltalennolla Edinburghiin. Yövyimme kohtuumatkan päässä lentokentästä ja aloitimme turisteeraamisen tiistaina vierailulla New Lanarkille, apteekin kautta tosin. Olimme molemmat tulossa flunssaan. Mutta New Lanark oli mielenkiintoinen ja siellä oli paljon nähtävää, mutta lankatarjonta oli hieman puutteellista. Paikanpäältä sai vain 100% villaa ja ekovillaa, silkkivillaa ei ollut tarjolla ollenkaan. Tyydyinkin vain ihailemaan värejä.

My third and final summer holiday week started today - I had a week in July already. The holiday started with a trip, how else. And afterwards I noticed that I took very few photos. Mainly for two reasons: when I was by myself it was raining and at other times the hubby took care of the photos. He has all the bells and whistles (a digital system camera) while I have a small Canon Ixus.

This time we toured the middle part of Scotland. Our trip started on September 5th when we took an evening flight to Edinburgh. We stayed the first night quite close to the airport and started the touristry stuff on Tuesday with a trip to New Lanark, via the closest pharmacists though, for we both had the feeling of oncoming flu. New Lanark was quite interesting, there was lots to see. I was a bit disappointed by the yarn offering though, for they only had the 100% wool and ecowool on offer. No silk/wool mix at the store. So I just gazed about and did not buy any yarn.

New Lanarkista suuntasimme Gourockiin, jossa asuimme pari päivää linnassa. Castle Levan oli linnan nimi ja se oli aika kompakti. Yövyimme pari yötä päämakuuhuoneessa. Paikka oli ihan kiva, joskaan en ymmärrä brittien intoa tunkea kokolattiamattoja joka paikkaan, sitä oli jopa kylpyhuoneessa. Paikka olisi ollut tunnelmallisempi puulattioilla.

Gourockista teimme päiväretken Obanin suuntaan. Poikkesimme menomatkalla ihmettelemässä Cruachanin vesivoimalaitosta vuoren sisällä ja tulomatkalla linnanraunioita. Obanissa kävimme tietysti tislaamossa ja minä kävin ihmettelemässä suljetun lankakaupan ikkunan takana. Obanista löytyi sekä Whitmore & Hamilton että Wool and Needlecraft Center, mutta kummallakaan ei ollut aukioloaikoja nettisivuilla enkä jaksanut lähetellä sähköposteja joten ajattelin että jos ovat auki niin se on sitten plussaa. Eivät olleet.

From New Lanark we continued on to Gourock, where we stayed couple of nights in a castle, Castle Levan that is. Very compact little castle that was. We stayed in the main bedroom. It was nice but I don't really get why Brits (or Scots in this case) have to put wall to wall carpeting everywhere, they had it there even in the bathroom. It would have been much more atmospheric with wood floors.

From Gourock we took a day trip to Oban. On the way there we visited the hollow mountain of Cruachan (power plant) and on the way back we went to see some castle ruins. In Oban we visited the distillery of course and I saw a couple of closed yarn shops. You can find Whitmore & Hamilton and Wool and Needlecraft Center in Oban but neither had any opening info on their websites. Since I wasn't that keen on yarn I couldn't be bothered to send them email to ask so I just though that if they were open that would be a bonus. They weren't.

Matkan suunnittelu hieman tökki, ja saimme varattua vain yhden yön majoituksen Islaylla. Maksimoidaksemme paikanpäällä vietetyn ajan päätimme mennä saarelle aamulautalla (ei ihan ensimmäisellä, se lähti jo seitsemältä) Kennacraigista ja tulla pois viimeisellä. Gourock ei ollut ihan ideaalipaikassa lauttailua ajatellen, joten jouduimmekin heräämään epäinhimillisen aikaisin ehtiäksemme ajoissa 9:15 check-in aikaamme Kennacraigissa (auton kanssa paikanpäällä pitää olla viimeistään puoli tuntia ennen lähtöaikaa). No, kaksi lauttamatkaa myöhemmin (Gourockista yli Hunter's Bayhin, Portavadiesta Tarbertiin) olimme ajoissa odottamassa lauttamatkaa. Tarbertista Kennacraigiin ei ajoaikaa kuitenkaan ollut liikaa, joten sesonkiaikaan voi joutua pitämään hieman kiirettä.

We had some problems with planning our trip, for we managed to get accommodation only for one night at Islay. To maximize the time spent there we decided to take the morning ferry (not the first, that left at 7:00) there and come out at the latest ferry. We noticed that Gourock was not ideally situated according to our plan so we had to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to Kennacraig in time for our 9:15 check-in (with car you have to check in 30 minutes before departure). Two ferries later we were there, on time, though the time between arrival at Tarbert and leaving Kennacraig was not too long and you might be a bit short of time during high season.

Islaylla ihmettelimme viskitislaamoja, kuinkas muutenkaan. Kävelymaastotkin olisivat olleet mainioita, mutta puolikuntoisena ei kävelypolut oikein innostaneet ja tislaamot tuntuivat olevan huuruineen parempia tukkoiselle nenälle. Eikä se kierroksen jälkeinen maistiainenkaan pahaa tehnyt.

Kiersimme opastetulla kierroksella kolme tislaamoa: Laphroaigin (tietysti), Bowmoren ja Kilchomanin. Ai että miksikö tietysti Laphroaig? No, omistamme molemmat sen huiman neliöjalan turvetta tislaamon mailta, joten pitihän sitä käydä katsomassa. Vedimme jopa lainasaappaat jalkaan ja meinasimme käydä liputtamassa tonttimme, mutta kun soutuvene jäi kotiin niin päädyimme iskemään lippumme turpeeseen friends-kyltin viereen. Muuten Bowmore ja Laphroaig olivat aika samantapaisia, molemmat tekevät osan omasta mallastuksestaan (ja ovat kuuden sitä vielä tekevän skottitislaamon joukossa) ja tuottavat viskiä aika runsaasti. Kilchoman on suhteellisen uusi tuttavuus tislaamosaralla, se on perustettu vuonna 2005. Tuotantotyyli on selvästi enemmän käsityömäistä, mikä ei välttämättä ole huono asia ollenkaan.

On Islay we toured some distilleries, what else? Though Islay had good scenery for walking we with our flu-feelings and stuffy noses preferred the distillery fumes and the samples after the tours.

We took the guided tours on three distilleries: Laphroaig (of course), Bowmore and Kilchoman. Why of course Laphroaig? Well, we are both Friends of Laphroaig and we have the square foot of land there so that's why of course. We even borrowed some rubber boots and decided to go stick the Finnish flag at our plots but since we left our rowing boat at home we decided to stick the flags just near the Friends-sign on the turf. Other than that Laphroaig and Bowmore were quite similar distilleries, they do part of their own maltings (and are among six distilleries in Scotland that still do that) and produce quite a lot of whisky. Kilchoman is quite new distillery, founded on 2005 and their style of making whisky was quite different, more like hobby than industry, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Islaylta menimme Inverarayn (linna ja vankila) kautta Stirlingiin. Siellä kävimme kiertämässä myös linnan ja kiipesimme Wallace-monumentin tuuliselle huipulle. Stirlingistä suuntasimme takaisin Edinburghiin Falkirkin kautta jossa kävimme ajelulla laivahissillä.

Edinburghissa tein ainoat lankaostokseni. Minulla oli siellä kolmisen tuntia shoppailuaikaa ja ostin uuden talvitakin Nessistä. Ja uusi takkihan tarvitsee tietysti uuden huivin ja nurkan takana sijainnut K1 Yarns tarjosi Orkneyn angoraa juuri nappeihin sopivassa lilassa. Mukaan lähti kaksi kerää 50/50 angora-villasekoitusta, St Magnusta. Tuo nyt ei ollut ihan niin unelmanpehmeää kuin 100% angora, mutta toisaalta väri sopi paremmin takkiin.


From Islay we went to Inveraray (castle and jail) and onwards to Stirling. There we visited the castle too and climbed to the windy top of the Wallace monument. From Stirling we went back to Edinburgh via Falkirk where we took a trip at the wheel.

At Edinburgh I did my only yarn shopping, for I had some shopping time to myself. I bought a new winter jacket from Ness and of course a new jacket will need a new scarf. So I bought two balls of Orkney angora yarn from K1 Yarns. The yarn I got was the 50/50 wool/angora mix called St Magnus. It was not so soft as the 100% angora but the colour was much better match for the buttons on my new jacket.

Ja ehkä sitä viskiäkin tuli hieman ostettua... Tässä ryhmäkuvaa. Islay-kokoelmasta jäi puuttumaan Bunnahabhain (Arbeg ei myöskään ole kuvassa, mutta miniatyyri sieltä tuli kuitenkin kotiin). En tiedä miksi, se ei vaan osunut matkanvarrelle jostain syystä. Lentokentältä poimin vielä mukaan pullon toista suosikkiani, Highland Parkia.

Nuo kahden desilitran pullot olivat mielestäni kovin mukavia, koska en olisi ostanut isoja pulloja moista määrää - nuo kun kuitenkin piti tunkea matkalaukkuun ja hajasijoituksella on parempi mahdollisuus saada pullot ehjinä perille. Puhumattakaan siitä että paljonko ylipainoa olisi tullut jos olisin ostellut isoja pulloja. Harmi vaan kaikilla ei ollut noita kokoja tarjolla.

And maybe I bought a bit of whisky too...here's the group photo. For some reason my Islay-collection is missing Bunnahabhain (yes, I know Ardbeg is missin from the photo too, but I bring home a miniature from there too). I don't know why, I think it just didn't come across it. I also picked up a bottle of my other favourite, Highland Park, at the airport.

I did like the two deciliter bottles for I would not have bought so many different distilleries if they only had large bottles to offer. For I had to stuff these into my suitcase and it's easier to get small bottles to travel intact (did not loose one) not to mention the extra weight the large bottles would have added to my luggage. Sadly not all distilleries offer these small bottles.

Mitäpä sitten jäi päällimmäisenä mieleen...no, Islay vaikutti todella kivalta (muutekin kuin viskitislaamojen kannalta) ja sinne voisin mennä uudestaankin hieman pidemmäksi ajaksi. Ja Edinburgh tuntui todella suurelta ja täynnä ihmisiä olevalta maaseudun jälkeen. Lisäksi huomasin että "wee"-sana on käytössä ihan jokapäiväisessä puheessa eikä ole vain joku muinaisjäänne.

So what did I think of all this? Well, Islay was really nice and I would like to spend there a bit more time (and not just because of all those distilleries). And Edinburgh seemed like a really big city and there were too many people after touring the countryside. Also I noticed that "wee" is used in everyday speech there and it's not just a quaint word used in touristy speech.

Sukka sinne, toinen tänne - Sock Here, There, Everywhere

Hieman päivänpaistetta sateen keskelle, sain nimittäin keltaiset sukat valmiiksi. Tai no, melkein ainakin. Tässä ne nyt epäparina komeilevat, toinen sukka nypyllä ja toinen napilla. Ja kuten näkyy niin nappi ei ole oikein kiinni vielä. Mietin laitanko siihen tuon pienemmän vai hieman isomman helmiäisnapin.

A little bit of sunshine in the middle of all this rain for I finished my yellow socks. Well, almost. Here they are, unmatched as they now are, one with the nupp in the middle and the other one without. I'm thinking of putting a button in the middle of the diamond and here it is still unsewn for I'm pondering whether to choose this one or a one slightly larger, mother-of-pearl both.

Kärjestä aloitettaessa on minulla aina hankalaa saada kantapäätä kohdalleen, ja niinpä se ei näissäkään oikein oikeassa paikassa ole, eli sukat ovat hieman liian lyhyet jalkaan. Saakohan näistä sittenkin äiti sukat...hän kun oli ensimmäistä esitellessäni kovin huolissaan että en kai meinaa purkaa sitä, hänelle kelpaisi kyllä.

When starting at the toes I have a problem getting the heel to be where it should be. And as you can see I did not do a very good job with this one either, for the sock is a bit too short. I wonder if end up giving these to my Mom after all...for when I showed the first one she was very worried that I shouldn't rip it that she'd take them if I didn't like them.

Puuhastelua - A Little Bit of This and That

Täällä on vähän puuhasteltu kaikenlaista viimeaikoina. Kaivoin esille neulepaidan jonka osat tein neulekonekurssilla joskus ikuisuus sitten - en löytänyt aiheesta blogausta, mutta luulisin että se oli joskus -08. Onpa tuota kasaankin ommeltu, mutta viimeistely on jäänyt kesken. Mallineule on sellaista että nurja pinta on se oikea puoli, joten tuo vääntää rullalle väärään suuntaan. Tein sitten kaitaletta mutta se ei oikein tahtonut istua hyvin kaulukseen joten tuo on jäänyt sivuun odottamaan inspiraatiota. Kaivoin sen nyt esille kun syksykin on taas tulossa ja kohtahan sitä voisi jo pitää 3/4-hihaista kashmirpaitaa. Purin aloituskerroksen ja poimin siitä silmukat puikoille ja neuloin sileää jokusen kerroksen. Nyt tuo kiertyy oikeaan suuntaan. Teen samaa myös hihansuihin, mutta kaulus on vielä mietinnän alla.

I've done a little bit of this and that lately. I dug out and old ufo that I made a while ago at the machine knitting class. All the parts are done and I've sewn almost all together but I had some difficulties with the edges. The pattern is such that the wrong side is the right side so the edges roll to the wrong side. I made some strips for the edges but that didn't work so well with the collar so I abandoned that - and the whole knit for a while. Now that the autumn is coming I dug it out again since it's won't take so long before a 3/4-sleeve cashmere sweater is just the thing. So, I ripped the cast-on edge and picked up the stitches on 2 mm needles and knit some rows of stockinette to make it curl on the right side. I will do the same with sleeves but I'm still not sure what to do with the collar.

Olen myös neuloskellut paria keltaiselle sukalle - ja kirjoitellut ohjetta siinä ohessa. Tästä toisesta jätin keskinypyn pois ja mietin helmiäisnappia. Jotain pientä se tuntuisi siihen kaipaavan.

I've also knitted a pair for the yellow sock. I left out the nupp on this one and I'm thinking of replacing it with a mother of pearl button. I still feel it needs something on the center of the diamond.

Viimeisenä harjoittelukappale. Ystävän rannekorut ovat kovan käytön alaisia ja yhden vaijeri petti taas. Tein hieman hopealanganpyörittelyharjoituksia ja tällainen siitä sitten tuli. Ei mikään täydellinen yksilö mutta ihan kelvollinen. Tuo lanka oli sen verran paksua että sitä oli jo hieman vaikeaa kieputella. Hopeaa ja hematiittia siis. Sain loppuhelmet itselleni että voisin vaikka tehdä oman, sen verran sievä tuosta tuli.

Last a practice piece. A friend's bracelets get a lot of use and one gave up the ghost. The wire snapped. So, I practiced wire-wrapping since I haven't done it much and this is what I came up with. It's not perfect but passable and at least this won't break easily. The wire I used was quite thick so twisting it took some work, and tools. It's silver and hematites. I got the beads that were left over and I think I might make one for myself too, for it turned out quite pretty.

Terveisiä Tallinnasta - Greetings from Tallinn

Käytiin viikonloppuna porukalla Tallinnassa, minä, mies, veli ja äiti. Mentiin Eckerö Linellä ja oltiin yötä Swissotel Tallinnassa.

Matka meni hyvin ja huonosti - laivamatka oli turhan kuuma molempiin suuntiin, ilmeisesti laivalla oli ongelmia ilmastoinnin kanssa. Tästä annoinkin jo palautetta, kun mielestäni ei pitäisi hiki valua päästä siitä voimanponnistuksesta että istuu rauhassa pöydässä ja lukee lehteä. Sainkin nopeasti vastauksen palautteeseeni ja kaikki on ok, tosin olisin kyllä kaivannut jonkinlaista yleisinfoa laivalla. Paljon auttaa jo se että joku pahoittelee, vaikka asia ei siitä sen kummemmaksi muutukaan.

Hotelli taas oli aika mukava - Eckeröllä oli kiva tarjous. Meidän huoneemme olivat 16. kerroksessa ja hieman merinäköalaakin oli havaittavissa mikäli kurkki tarpeeksi innokkaasti ikkunasta. Lisämaksusta olisi saanut parempaakin, merinäköalaa siis, mutta kyllä tuokin näköala meille kelpasi. 30. kerroksen baarista oli hyvä näkoala ja sieltä myös oli kiva seurata naakkaparven huvittelua ilmavirtauksissa.

We spent a night last weekend in Tallinn, me, husband, mother and brother. We took the Eckerö Line ship and stayed at Swissotel Tallinn.

The trip itself was good and bad - the ship was too hot both ways. I gave feedback to them and the reply came promptly, apparently they've had some trouble with the air conditioning of the ship this past week. Though the reply was good and well, I would have preferred to have some general announcement about the issue. Lot of things tend to be better when someone says they're sorry even though they can't do anything about it at the moment.

The hotel was very nice, Eckerö Line had a nice offer. Our rooms were in the 16th floor and we had a bit of a sea view when standing at the window and peeking out. With extra charge you can get a better view of the sea but the view we had was good enough. The 30th floor bar had a very nice view, both of the sea and some jackdaws that came to play in the updrafts.

Lankakaupoissa en pahemmin vieraillut, kävin kyllä Pronksissa etsimässä vironvilloja. Haluamaani sateenkaarivillaa en kuitenkaan löytänyt sieltä, vaan törmäsin ihan uuteen lankakauppaan. Nimeä en muista, mutta sinne on aika helppo löytää. Jos tulee vanhaan kaupunkiin Viru-hotellilta päin ja kulkee Viru-katua pitkin, käänny siltä oikealle sinne missä on villapaitakojuja muurin vieressä (juu, en muista kadun nimeä, mutta sitä ei voi olla huomaamatta). Kauppa on hieman kojujen jälkeen vasemmalla, noin kiinalaisen ravintolan kohdalla. Siellä oli Anyn sukkalankoja, monivärisiä vironvilloja kerällä ja vyyhtilankoja myös, sekä hahtuvaa. En nyt juuri muista että siellä olisi ollut muita kuin virolaisia lankoja, koska oma mielenkiintoni kohdistui vain niihin. Sieltä löysin kaipaamani vyyhdin sateenkaarivillaa. Harmi kyllä muistin vain paksuuden väärin ja ostin juurikin sitä toista mitä kotona oli. Tarkoitus on siis tehdä huovutettu takki kummitytölle, mutta ehkä tässä nyt pärjätään vaikka paksuudet ovatkin eri. Pitää vain tehdä molemmilla mallitilkut.

I did not visit yarn stores much, for this was not that kind of a trip. I needed a skein of rainbow-coloured Estonian yarn for I want to make a felted jacket for my god-daughter. So I visited Pronksi, where I did not find what I was looking for. Then quite by accident I stumbled upon a yarn store I haven't been to before. I can't remember what it was called but it is very easy to find. When coming to the old town from the direction of Viru hotel, taking Viru street, turn right to where they sell wool things on stalls by the wall. Go past the stalls, the shop is a bit after them on the left, around the Chinese restaurant. The shop had a small selection of Estonian yarns, like Any sock yarn, some colourful wools on balls and Aade long on skeins and pre-yarn. At least. I don't remember if they had anything else, for I was concentrating on just the rainbow wool. Which I managed to buy a skein. Unfortunately I remembered wrong what thickness the skein I had at home was so I of course bought the other thickness. Duh. But, I think I'll be able to make the jacket, I just have to make good swatches with both.

Kun miehet kirmasivat kaupungilla museoissa ja torneissa, keskityimme äidin kanssa hieman muuhun. Kävimme Roosikrantsissa kaunistumassa. Äiti hiustenleikkuussa ja -värjäyksessä, minä jalkahoidossa. Spa-pedikyyri oli oikein miellyttävä ja ensimmäisen kerran varpaankynsiäni ei leikattu liian lyhyiksi - vaikka aina muistankin siitä sanoa niin silti niin meinaa käydä.

Liann-lankapuodin viereisessä sukkakaupassa teimme löytöjä. Siellä oli Suvan etno-sukkia ja -sukkahousuja. Nämä ammentavat ideansa virolaisista kansallispuku- ja perinnemalleista. Ostin parit nilkkasukat.

While the men ran around the old town of Tallinn visiting museums and towers, my Mom and me did something different. We went to Roosikrantsi beaty salon to get pretty. My Mom got some colour and a nice haircut for her hair, I had a pedicure. It's the first time I had my big toes not clipped too short - even though I always say about it they still tend to be a bit too short.

At the sock shop next to Liann yarn shop we found some nice socks. They were Etno socks by Suva, with Estonian folk patterns. I got couple of ankle socks.

Mulk-polvisukat. Sekä vielä yhdet sukkahousut joiden puna-lila unikko-orvokkikuvio ei halunnut toistua kameralla mitenkään järkevästi.

Then some mulgi knee socks. And I also got a pair of tights but their red-purple poppy-violet pattern didn't want to look nice in the photo.

Aika maltillisella shoppailulla siis pärjättiin - en edes ostanut kenkiä (äiti sen sijaan osti, yhdet). Laivamatkan aikana alkoi tuntua siltä, että jätin kännykkälaturini hotelliin. Ja sinnehän se jäikin. Eikun sähköpostia hotelliin ja lupasivat lähettää sen perässä. Mikä on ihan kiva, sillä miehen laturi ei käy minun puhelimeeni vaikka onkin samaa merkkiä.

So I did not shop that much, not even shoes (though my Mom did). During the trip home I started to get a feeling that I left something behind, my cell phone charger that is. And yes, I left it plugged in at the hotel. I emailed them this morning and they promised to send it after me. Which is nice for my hubby's charger does not fit my phone even though they're both htc.

Niinanpääsukka - From the top of my head

Täällä on podettu kesäflunssaa. Ja koska en voinut neuloa mitään keskeneräisistäni, se olisi vaatinut rymistelyä lankavarastoissa koska en muistanut minne tungin loput huivilangat, niin aloitin aivotonta sukkaa.

Langaksi valikoitui ei-todellakaan-minun -värinen Lai-lai-lai Yarnzin Bad Things-klubissa tullut merino-kashmir-nailon -sukkalanka ja 3 mm puikot.

I've had a bit of a summer flu. And since I couldn't knit any of the things on the needles for I would have had to rummage through my stash for I have no idea where I put the rest of the scarf yarns, I started on a sock.

I used a yarn I had on hand, a so-not-my-colour I got from Lai-lai-lai Yarnz Bad Things club. It's a merino-cashmere-nylon mix and I used 3 mm needles.

Neuloskelin lähinnä mitä päähän juolahti, mutta oli minulla sentään jonkinlainen kantava ajatus. Käytän sukkia pääasiassa sisätiloissa, kotona tai kylässä, jalkojen lämmikkeenä. Useimmiten jalassa on housut joten sukasta näkyy lähinnä jalkaosa. Monien sukkien kaunis varsiosa menee siis hiukan hukkaan. Halusinkin tehdä jotain jalkapöytään ja tällainen siitä sitten tuli.

Sukka on aloitettu kärjestä ja se on muotoiltu, eli kumpaankin jalkaan on omansa. Keskitin kuvion kärjen sileän osan keskelle, joten se ei siis ole ihan keskellä jalkapöytää. Näin jälkikäteen mietittynä en edelleenkään osaa sanoa olisiko sen pitänyt olla keskellä vai ei.

I knitted whatever came to my head though I did have a bit of an idea. For I use socks mainly indoors, either at home or when visiting, to keep my toes warm. Quite often I wear them with trousers so the lovely cuffs many socks have are completely wasted for I can't see them. I wanted to make something that is visible with trousers too so this is what I came up with.

The sock is knitted toe-up and it is fitted, meaning there's a left sock and a right sock, this being the left. I centered the pattern on the flat portion of the toes so it is not in the middle of the top of the sock. And now, after completing, I still can't say whether that was the right thing to do or not.

Puhun yksikössä koska valmiina on vasta yksi sukka. En ole vielä edes katkaissut lankaa koska en oikein osaa päättää onko tämä mörvelö vai ei. Neulonko siis vielä toisen sukan vai puranko tämän ja teen jotain muuta?

I'm speaking of a sock for that is all that I've done so far. I haven't even cut the yarn yet because I can't decide if this is a keeper or not. So, should I knit another sock or rip this horrible thing and do something else?

Rhombus 2

Toinen pari Rhombus-sukkia valmiina. Aloittelin näitä kevään retriitissä enkä ole näitä mitenkään ahkerasti tehnyt, kun tarkoitus oli saada nämä joskus syksyksi valmiiksi, äidillä kun ei ole käyttöä sukille kesällä. Nelisen kuukautta satunnaista miittineulomista ja kah, nyt ne ovat valmiit.

Näissä käytin lankana myös Wollmeisea, mutta 100% merinon sijaan twiniä (turkoosi sukka on twiniä, Türkis ja vihreä merinoa, Zarte Knospe). Valitsin twinin koska siinä on keinokuitua vahvisteena ja se kestää paremmin käyttöä. Äitini kun omistaa huomattavasti vähemmän villasukkia kuin minä ja ne vähät sukat saavatkin enemmän käyttöä.

Twin ja merino Wollmeiset ovat koostumuksen lisäksi myös hieman eri paksuisia, 100% merino on sitä itseään, superwash merinoa, siinä on 526m 150g kerässä, twinissä on 80% merinoa ja 20% nailonia ja 466m 150 g kerässä. Eroa on siis 60m kerässä.


A second pair of Rhombus socks is finished. I started these on the spring knitting retreat and I haven't been that active in knitting them so it took me about four months to finish. The aim was to get them done by autumn, since my Mom does not have that much need for wool socks in the summer. But see, now they are done.

For this pair I used a different yarn, Wollmeise twin instead of 100% merino (the turquoise sock is twin, Türkis and the green one is merino, Zarte Knospe). I chose twin because it has nylon for better strength for my Mom has fewer socks than I do so the ones she has get more wear.

Twin and merino Wollmeises have not just different composition but also different thickness. 100% merino is just that, superwash merino with 526m on 150 g skein. The twin has 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon with 466m on 150g skein. So the difference is 60m.

Seurasin ohjetta ja neuloin 2mm puikoilla nämäkin sukat. Alku on hieman erilainen, 202n-joustinneuleen sijasta tein 2o3n-joustinneuletta ja jatkoin joustinta aina siihen asti kunnes vastaan tuli ensimmäiset silmukankierrot. Aloituksesta tuli mielestäni aika kiva.

Paksuusero näkyy aika hyvin varren pituudessa - ohjeen mukaan tehtynä (joustin on senttimäärältään sama kummassakin) varresta tuli hieman pidempi

I followed the pattern and used 2 mm needles. The difference in thickness can be seen in the cuffs. The ribbing part is the same cm length in both, but the cuff on the blue sock is a bit longer than on the green.

Sinisen sukan varsi on myös hieman leveämpi kuin vihreän. Jalkaosassa ero ei ole niin huomattava, koska pohja on sileää neuletta. Pituus on myös molemmissa suunnilleen sama, mutta sinisessä on puolikas mallikerta vähemmän.

The cuff on the blue sock is also a bit wider than on the green. The difference is not so noticeable on the foot part for the bottom is stockinette stitch. Also the length of the foot part is about the same on both, but the blue has half a pattern less than the green.

Vaihtamalla lanka paksummaksi saa hieman väljemmän sukan. Oma jalkani on aika rintava, joten sininen sukka on hieman helpompi vetää jalkaan, koska se on väljempi tuosta kantapään kohdalta.

Sininen sukka on hieman hillitympi, koska käytin siinä pienempiä helmiä kuin vihreässä. Ja jos taannoinen anonyymikommentoija sattuu lukemaan, niin ei helmet sukassa mitenkään omituista ole eivätkä ne välttämättä mitenkään häiritse kengässäkään jos ei käytä kovin isoja sukkia. Eikä niitä tietenkään kannata jalkapohjan puolelle tai kantapäähän laittaa. Omat sukkani eivät ole tarkoitettu kenkäsukiksi ollenkaan, vaan ihan kotihipsutteluun, niin helmet tuovat hieman luksusta arkipäivään.

So if you change the pattern yarn to thicker one, you get a bit looser sock. My feet are quite wide around the heel-top part (is it called high instep?) so the blue one is a bit easier to pull on.

The blue sock is a bit more understated than the green one for I used darker and smaller beads on it. And if the anonymous commentor is reading - the one that was dubious about the wisdom of putting beads on socks - it's not that strange. Just choose small enough beads if you want to wear your socks with shoes so that they don't bother you - and of course do not put any beads on the bottom or on the heel. I'm not planning on wearing my socks with shoes so that is why I chose beads with a bit more bling on them. Something to brighten the day when at home.

Ravintola Gaijin - Restaurant Gaijin

Täytin eilen vuosia ja kävimme miehen kanssa juhlistamassa sitä ravintolassa niinkuin tapana on. Tällä kertaa ravintolaksi valikoitui Gaijin. Söimme nimikkomaistelumenun, jossa oli yhdeksän ruokalajia. Ruoka oli pääasiassa hyvää, varsinkin Pork Bun jäi erityisesti mieleen, samoin possun poski ja ribsit. Myös sashimi oli hyvää, mutta niin se yleensä onkin. Kampasimpukka-annos oli hieman epäonnistunut soosinsa kanssa (soosi ei oikein lähtenyt mukaan) ja jälkiruoassa maistui lähinnä sitrus. Mustikan maku on senverran heikko että se ei oikein päässyt tuon limen ja sitruunamelissan yli.

Itse hieman ihmettelin kattaus-mentaliteettia, eli varaukset on jaettu neljään kahden ja puolen tunnin osioon (joista toki pari menevät hieman lomittain). Meille ei ihan nappiaikaa osunut, ja paikka oli täynnä, mutta sitten saimme peruutuksen kello 20 kattaukseen. Itse olisin halunnut aloittaa noin tuntia aiemmin, mutta tätä mahdollisuutta ei edes ollut. Alkuruoat tulivat pöytään todella ripeästi, hieman liiankin nopeasti, sillä olimme vielä nauttimassa alkudrinkkejä kun pöytään kannettiin ensimmäinen ruokalaji ja tarjoilija toi ruokaviinin. En ottanut viinipakettia, koska sen sisältämä viinimäärä oli aika suuri aikaan nähden, vaan join lasin tarjoilijan suosittelemaa valkoviiniä, mikä olikin hyvää - ja nimeltään teemaan sopivaa - Amerikkalaista Rieslingiä nimeltä Kungfu Girl.

Kokonaisuudessaan ravintolakokemus ei kyllä ollut hintansa arvoinen. Fine dining-hinnalla kuvittelisi saavan hieman rauhallisemman ympäristön. Liekö Farangin menestys noussut hieman hattuun vai mistä oli kyse, mutta paikkaan oli tungettu aivan liian paljon pöytiä. Meidänkin pöytänaapurimme oli n. 10 cm päässä ja oma pöytämme oli tungettu aivan seinään kiinni. Akustiikka oli huono joten paikassa oli todella kova meteli ja päälle vielä taustamusiikki. Tunnelma oli aika ruokalamainen ja piti suunnilleen huutaa että pöytätoveri kuuli mitään - mikä tietysti lisäsi meteliä entisestään. En nyt tarkoita että pitäisi olla hiljaa ja hissutella, vaan että voisi keskustella pöytäkaverien kanssa normaalisti huutamatta. Entäs jos meitä olisi ollut vaikka neljä? Tämän vuoksi tuskin tulen vierailemaan paikassa toiste, mikä on sinänsä harmi koska ruokalista oli mielenkiintoinen. Kolmasosa pöydistä pois ja parempi akustiikka niin ruokailukokemus paranisi huimasti.

Yesterday was my birthday and I celebrated it with my husband by going to a restaurant, as is our custom. This time we chose Gaijin. We had the signature tasting menu, which consisted of nine courses. The food was mainly good, especially the Pork Bun, Baby Back Pork Ribs and Gaijin Hot Hot Pot. The sashimi was also good, but it generally is. The dish with scallops was not so spot-on, though all the ingredients were good, the whole did not work for the sauce did not want to stick to the scallop...or maybe it was meant to be drunk, I do not know. Also the dessert did not work for the combination of citrus (lime and lemon balm) was too strong for blueberry and the dish tasted mainly of citrus.

What was a bit surprising and odd to me was that the reservations were divided into four overlapping two and half hour sittings. I would have preferred to start at seven, but that was not offered and the restaurant was full. But we got a cancellation for the 8 pm setting so we chose that. The starters came to the table really, really quickly, too quickly in fact for we had just barely tasted our before dinner drinks when the waiter came with the food and the wine. I did not want to take the recommended wine package, for the amount of wine was a bit too much for the time. Instead I chose a riesling recommended by the waiter - an American wine called Kungfu Girl. That really went well with the whole menu.

All in all the dining experience was not worth the money. For with Fine Dining prices you'd expect a bit more ambience. Maybe it was the success of Farang (their other and first restaurant) or maybe something else, but the restaurant was too packed. There were too many tables for the space - the next table was about 10 cm from ours and ours was jammed right to the wall - and there was a "lounge bar" as well. The acoustics was horrible, or non-existing, which meant it was really noisy and there was some background music as well which contributed to the poor sound environment. The feeling was of a lunch diner - you had to practically shout to be able to have a conversation with the person sitting opposite to you. I do not mean that you have to be quiet and speak in whispers, but it would be nice to have a conversation in a normal voice. You could hardly hear what the waiters were saying when they brought you the food. What if there would have been four of us? For this reason I doubt I'll go there again, which is a shame for the menu seemed interesting. A third less tables and some improvements in acoustics would make the place much nicer.

Laiska neuloja - Lazy knitter

Neulomiseni on ollut aika tylsää viimeaikoina, ja tylsästä neulonnasta on tylsä blogata. Siispä ei sitäkään ole tullut oikein tehtyä. Mutta ehkä nyt voisi olla jotain näytettävää - olen lomaillut viikon, käynyt Tallinnassa, purkanut, neulonut uudelleen ja tehnyt mallitilkkuja ja muuta pientä.

My knitting has been really boring lately and boring knitting makes boring blogging. That is why I've been so quiet lately. But maybe I should show you something at least - I've had a week's worth of holidays, been to Tallinn, frogged and reknit, made swatches and other small stuff like that.

Purku-uhan alla jo pidempään ollut Cloud päätyi takaisin langaksi eilen illalla. Calmer on ihan kivaa lankaa ja sitä on surku säilytellä kaapissa käyttämättä, sillä joku tuossa Cloudissa tökki sen verran ettei sitä kauheasti ole tullut päällä käytettyä. Ehkä se oli hieman liian lyhyt neuletakiksi, ja ehkä en oikein ikinä tiennyt mitä sinne alle laittaisin, toisaalta reunapitsi ei ikinä oikein istunut hyvin edestä, ehkä se oli kaikki yhdessä. Oikeastaan pidin vain tuosta reunapitsistä ja sen jätinkin purkamatta. Yritän tästä uudestaan jotain neuletakkia - Kim Hargreavesilla on monia vastaavanlaisia reunapitsillisiä malleja - tai sitten vain sävellän jotain itse tuolta pohjalta. Toisaalta tekisi mieli pistää tuota pitsiä vaikka hihansuihin ja kaulukseenkin kanssa. Saa nähdä.

A knit that has been under the threat of frogging for a while now was Cloud. Calmer is too nice a yarn just to sit in one's closet unused. Something always bothered me about that cardi so that it never got too much wear. Maybe it was the fact that it really was a bit too short for me. Maybe it was the way the lace edging never behaved nicely at the front. Maybe it was the fact I never really knew what to wear underneath for blouses were too bulky. Maybe it was just all those things together and more. I think what I really liked about the pattern was just the lacy edging on the bottom. I decided to save that and use it as a base for some future knit. Kim Hargreaves has quite a few designs based on similar lacy edgings. Or maybe I just make something up. For I quite like the idea of using the lace on sleeve edgings as well. We'll see.

Aloitin kevään retriitissä Paper dolls-puseroa. Paitsi päätin valita kuvioksi Totoron. Sain nykerrettyä viikonlopun aikana alaosan kaksivärisen joustimen, jonka sitten myöhemmin päätin purkaa koska se oli liian tiukka. Pääsin jo kerran yläosan kaarrokkeen kuvioissa vauhtiin, mutta kun kokeilin paitaa päälle totesin että kuvio-osa ei jousta tarpeeksi ja hihat olivat liian kapeat. Pistin jutun poikki ja päätin aloittaa väliaikaisella aloituksella suoraan kaarrokkeesta. Loin epämääräisen määrän silmukoita (paljon lisää hihoihin ja hieman lisää etu- ja takaosaan) ja olen taas vauhdissa. Purin sitten lopulta vartalo-osankin, koska en todellakaan rupea silmukoimaan moista määrää silmukoita, helpompaa on vain jatkaa kaarrokkeen reunasta toiseen suuntaan. Näin sitä neulotaan tylsästi, aloitus - purku, purku, aloitus. Luulenpa että loppujenlopuksi alkuperäisestä ohjeesta jää jäljelle idea ja tuo pääkuviota reunustava raita. Villaneuletta helteellä, ihanaa.

On the spring knitting retreat I started knitting the Paper Dolls sweater. During the weekend I managed to knit the bottom corrugated rib portion which I ended up ripping later for I discovered that the i-cord cast-on was too loose (or the first row after that) and the ribbing portion itself was a bit too tight. Then I kept on going and started the yoke pattern. At some poing when I had progressed up the yoke a bit I tried it on and discovered that yes, as I had thought earlier, the sleeves were a bit too tight. The colourwork portion was too tight to accommodate my upper hands and it pulled a bit too tightly. So, I decided to rip the yoke and save the body portion. Then I did a crochet cast-on and started straight from the yoke by adding more stitches to the sleeves and a few to the back and front part of the body. Then I decided to rip the body part also for I do not want to graft that many stitches. It is easier just to knit downwards from the crochet cast-on. I think I end up using only the idea and the colourwork band surrounding the main pattern of the original, for I'm going to make Totoros instead of dolls.

Viime tiistaina järjestimme invaasion Tallinnaan Ravelryn Kahelit-ryhmän voimin. Meitä taisi olla loppujenlopuksi 27 matkailijaa. Menimme melkein kaikki ensin Karnaluksiin ja sieltä hajosimme pienempiin ryhmiin. Koska minulla ei ollut mitään järkevän kokoista neuletta kesken niin aloitin reissuhuivin. Halusin jotain käyttökelpoista joten malliksi valikoitui Helen Stewartin Radiance Shawl (Ravelry-linkki). Ohjeen muistilista-muoto on kätevä ja sain sen mukaan hieman yli 10% huivista tehtyä matkan aikana. Vielä on neulottavaa jäljellä. Lankana on ihanan pehmeä ja sinivihreä BC Garnin Silkbloom Extra Fino.

Last Tuesday the Ravelry-forum Kahelit invaded Tallinn. I think there was all in all something like 27 people and most of whom ended up in Karnaluks first. After which we split into smaller groups to further investigate the city and its yarn and other shops. Since I didn't have a suitable travel-knit I had to start something new. I wanted a shawl, something practical and not too lacy and I ended up with Radiance Shawl (rav-link) from Helen Stewart. I liked the list-form of the pattern and according to it I managed to finish a bit over 10% of the shawl during the trip. The yarn I'm using is a lovely blue-green BC Garn Silkbloom Fino.

Matkalta tarttui mukaan Grunilla-helmikaupasta hieman vihreitä lasihelmiä ja pari lasikukkaa. En nyt hirveän kauheasti ihastunut kaupan valikoimiin - siemenhelmiä siellä oli kyllä aika runsaasti, lisäksi lasihelmiä ja puuhelmiä, mutta yleisesti valikoima oli hieman rihkamaisen oloista. Itse käytän mielelläni hieman aidompaa tavaraa.

I picked up a few glass leaves and flowers from Grunilla pearl shop. There were quite a few seed pearls, some wooden and glass pearls but all in all the selection was somewhat poor. I prefer a bit more "genuine" materials myself so I just bought these.

Karnaluksista löytyi langan lisäksi pieniä kristallikartioita. Tuskin mitään Swarovskia, mutta ihan kauniita kuitenkin.

Langasta puheenollen...Karnaluksista ostin kilon Shoeller + Stahlin Fortissima Cotton-sukkalankaa. Ja ei, en aio kutoa näistä sukkia armeijalle, vaan ajattelin tehdä niistä koneella jonkinlaisen neuletakin. Siihenkään en tarvitse kiloa, mutta tuo tukkupakkaus oli vaan niin paljon edullisempi verrattuna yksittäiskeriin, tässä kerähinnaksi verojen kanssa tuli 3.30 euroa.
Lanka tuntuu miellyttävältä, siinä on melkein puolet puuvillaa, joten siitä tulee varmasti kiva välikausivillis.

Speaking of yarn...I got a kilo of Schoeller+Stahl Fortissima Cotton sock yarn from Karnaluks. And no, I'm not going to knit socks for an army instead I'm going to use this at the machine knitting class to make a knit of some sort. And I doubt I'll end up using a kilo of this stuff it's just that the whole pack was so much cheaper compared to individual balls. I ended up paying 3.30 euros per ball and that's not bad. The material is nice, it has almost half and half of cotton and wool with a little bit of plastic thrown in, after all it is a sock yarn. But I think it will make a very nice autumn-early winter knit.

Toiset ja viimeiset reissun lankaostokset ovat tässä: 10 kerää Rowanin Bamboo Tape-lankaa siniharmaana. Tästä kaavailen puseroa viime kesänä ostetun kukkahameen kaveriksi. En nyt tiedä kuinka järkevä ostos tämä oli, sillä lueskelin Ravelrystä että tämä venyy käytössä kovasti. Toisaalta nyt kun sen tiedän teen jotain kevyttä - en siis mitään pitkähihaista - ja pienemmillä puikoilla. 100% bambu taitaa kyllä olla hieman vaikea materiaali, en siis ihmettele että tätä lankaa ei myydä enää.

The second and last yarn purchase from this trip is here: 10 balls of Rowan Bamboo Tape in greyish blue. I have a skirt from last summer that needs a top and this colour is spot-on. Though I'm not so sure now how good a purchase this was for I've read on Ravelry that this yarn, or knits made from it, stretch quite considerably when worn. Though now I know so I can plan accordingly. So I will make something light - no long sleeves - and knit with smaller needles. Hopefully those will make it behave a bit better. Though 100% bamboo is a challenging material, I hear, so it's no wonder this yarn is discontinued.

Katselin kyllä vironvillojakin sillä silmällä, kun haluaisin isomman Revontuli-huivin. Mutta en oikein osannut päättää... Sateenkaarivillaa vai lila-vihreää? Keskipaksuista vai sitä ihan ohutta? Toisaalta sateenkaari-Revontuli olisi kiva ohuesta yksisäikeisestä, mutta minulla on jo yksi. Tuo on siitä kaksisäikeisestä mutta voisi olla isompikin. Mutta onko se hieman tyhmää tehdä kaksi samanväristä huivia? Toisaalta voisinhan aina lahjoittaa tuon ensimmäisen pois. Toisaalta se lila-vihreä tummempisävyinen lanka oli myös kaunista. Ah, päättämättömyyttä. Ehkä olen päättänyt jo jotain ensi kuun puoliväliin mennessä kun menemme perheporukalla Tallinnaan, ehkä en.

I did look at estonian wool too for I would like a larger Revontuli-scarf. But I could not decide...rainbow wool or violet-green? Two-ply or the lacy single-ply? On one hand a rainbow-Revoltuli from single-ply would be nice but I already have one. That is from the thicker two-ply but it could be bigger. But is it a bit daft making two scarf from the same colourway? On the other hadn I could always give the first one away. Although the darker violet-green is also lovely. Ah, decisions, decisions. Maybe I have made up my mind by the time we go to Tallinn with the family (next month), maybe not.
