Pictures from the life of a knitter

(imagine read in the voice of David Attenborough) Ja anteeksi, en millään voi kuvitella ko. henkilön puhuvan mitään muuta kieltä kuin englantia, siksi vain sillä kielellä tällä kertaa.

The knitter is an elusive species easily disturbed by cameras and loud noises. But if we tread carefully, we can see traces of the knitter as it goes about on its daily business.

The place where the knitter can be found most often is in the corner of this sofa. If you look carefully you can see scattered amongst the cushions small, peculiar objects the knitter has left behind. The purpose for all these is not clear but apparently they are involved in the craft somehow.

The knitter consumes copious amounts of hot liquids during its crafty endeavours. It uses special receptacles for that and though it usually owns several pieces, it seems to favour some above the other. The reasons behind this behaviour could be that this particular "cup" - as they call them - seems to be larger than the others. Here you can see it in its "ready to use" -state, filled up with tea.

Here you can see some of the favourite pieces of this knitter. On the left you can see the traditional Winnie-the-Pooh -style cup and on the right is a hand side is a hand-painted one with cat decorations.

This individual, like the magpie, is also overly fond of shiny objects which it uses to adorn itself. The favourite trinket changes from time to time but lately it has been seen wearing this silver piece bought from a Tibet exhibition in San Francisco summer 2005.

The views at this time of the year are never pretty in Finland and this knitter seems to have difficulty pointing out the favourite view around its surroundings (if one excludes yarn) so instead you can see the one view this individual sees the most, perhaps. It is the view from the spare bedroom where the books and computer are located. The blue thing you can see vaguely in the picture is a structure called a "Moomin House".

The knitter is a timid creature that likes to stay close to its nest but wanders outside occasionally when the need arises. It is very fond of footwear, like many of its fellow creatures. This one seems to prefer black footwear and has already switched to deeper winter plumage, so the colour and styles appear more sombre than in the more sunnier seasons. However, this one seems to prefer these black, almost military style boots.

But during the summer season the knitter has been seen wearing more colours and perhaps the strangest pair of footwear this knitter owns is this pair obtained from the region of Brussels sometime last summer.

The knitter usually possesses a thing called a "stash" where it keeps its hoard of yarn. Usually there is a favourite amongst the multitude but unfortunately this particular specimen could not point out its favourite.

Huivitus - Scarfy

Sainpa viimeinkin pääteltyä langanpätkät tästä huivituksesta. Sitä ei oikein ihan täysikasvuiseksi huiviksi voi kutsua, koska siitä tuli aika lyhyt. Mutta se ei oikeastaan haittaa, koska tungen yleensä huivit takin alle, niin pitkät päät olisivat vain haitaksi. Siitä tuli siis täydellinen takkihuivitus, vaikka lyhyys johtuukin vain siitä että lanka loppui eikä suunnitelmallisuudesta. Nätti siitä kuitenkin tuli, vai mitä?

I finally managed to weave in the ends of this scarfy. It's not really a proper scarf since it turned out quite short. But it doesn't really matter since I prefer to wear my scarves tucked into my jacket anyway and long ends would just be in the way. It turned out a perfect jacket scarfy then, though the reason it turned out this way is because I didn't have any more yarn not because I planned it this way. But it's pretty nonetheless, no?

Lankana oli kaksi kerää Schoppel-Wollen Samosta, puikot olivat jotkut ja malli kehittyi siinä neuloessa. Ainaoikeaa ja välillä reikärivejä. Yksinkertaista siis. Huomenna: kuvia neulojan ympäristöstä. Pysykää kanavalla.

The yarn I used was Schoppel-Wolle's Samos, two balls, the needle size was something and the pattern evolved as I knitted. Garter stitch and some hole rows. Simple, really. Tomorrow: pictures of the knitter's environment. Stay tuned.

Helmiä - Pearls

Koska minulla ei vielä ole ollut aikaa ottaa meemikuvia, niin ajattelin antaa vielä aikaa toivoa jotain ja esitellä sen sijaan viimeisimmän keskeneräisen työni. Jaa ettei ole ollut aikaa? No ei...maanantai-ilta meni aika hyvin tiedätte minkä kanssa, tiistaina olin kovin kuldyyri ja kävin teatterissa, eilen olin kotona vasta noin kymmeneltä (episodin neljällä bussilla Mäkelänkadulta Leppävaaraan jälkeen) ja tänään päätin vaihteeksi istua telkun edessä ja neuloa. Pääsin tänään jo itse neulomuksen kimppuun kun eilen vietin tovin pujotellen helmiä lankaan. Ensin tuli peukalo kipeäksi kun yritin tilsiä niitä vaan ihan ohuesta neulasta neulelankaan, mutta sitten keksin että sen neulelangan voi laittaa ompelulangasta roikkumaan ja vot, kaikki sujui heti paljon paremmin. Jaksoin pujotella niitä sen parisen sataa ennenkuin kyllästyin siihen että niitä pirun helmiä varisi ympäri sohvaa - ja taitaa niitä olla sohvan sisälläkin jokunen kymmen. Ai että mitä minä sitten teen? No helmikoristeltuja ranteenlämmittimiä ajattelin...sny:lleni. Siis ihan hyvinhän tässä vielä on aikaa, eikö? Kuun lopussahan kaikki pitää vasta paljastaa - ja onhan tämä sentään ensimmäinen kerta kun neulon helmiä työhön.

Because I haven't had time to take the meme photos I thought I'd give you some extra time in case someone had an urge to see something odd and show you my latest work-in-progress. Oh, no time, eh? Yup, no time...Monday was spent doing you-know-what, Tuesday I was enjoying culture in a form of a play, yesterday I was home at ten (after a long and painful journey with mainly buses going somewhere I didn't particularly want to go) and today I decided to knit for a change and watch some telly. I managed to get to the knitting part today since I spent a while stringing pearls into knitting yarn. First I got a sore thumb trying to push them on the yarn with just a thin needle but then I discovered to use sewing thread too and presto, things got lot easier. I managed about 200 pearls before I got fed up with the darn things rolling around the sofa and decide to call it quits - I still think there's a few dozen inside the sofa. So what is it that I'm doing then? Beaded wrist warmers, for my secret knitting friend perhaps. Plenty of time there is, I only have to reveal myself to my recipient by the end of this month. And would you guess it, it's my first time knitting with pearls.

SNY paljastui - SNY revealed

Menin sitten tänään keskustaan neuletapaamiseen koska sitä toivottiin ja siellä minua odotti todellinen neulojan puuhapussi. Ei-enää-niin-salainen neuleystäväni Zeska oli vauhdissa. Ensinnäkin oli tietysti kuoret, eli itse kassi...mukava neulomiskassi missä on lokeroita ja taskuja riittävästi.

I went to the knit meet today after all since I got some requests and what awaited me there was a real party-pack for a knitter. My not-so-secret-friend-anymore Zeska had got on a roll. First, there was the wrappings themselves - a nice knitter-sized canvas bag with enough pockets and zippers to hold things in.

Sitten löytyi muonaa, jotka jaettiin eteenpäin. Valkoinen suklaa ei ole erityinen intohimoni mutta toinen kanssa-asuja kelpuuttaa melkein ainoastaan sitä, niinpä sai hänkin lahjan. Ja karvakorva maisteli jo Greenies-namuja. Kelpasivat.

Then there was snacks which were distributed promptly. White chocolate is not among my top favourites but he who lives here eats almost nothing but so he got a nice surprice too. And the more hairy one got Greenies which were sampled too. Apparently they were nice.

Then there was Joy of Knitting in the form of a book (companion) and a pair of needles, a measuring tape and some Kool-Aid.

And cute silver-wire stitch markers and a pair of earrings that glow in the dark (or that was what I was told). As it happens the theme for the company xmas party is disco...

Ja totta kai lankaa! Käsin kehrättyä sinikirjavaa silkkiä kolmisen vyyhtiä, käsin kehrättyä tumman lilaa merinoa pari vyyhtiä (takana tuo tumma möykky), kaksi kerää harmaata Sisua, kaksi vyyhtiä Knitpicksin sinivihreää Alpaca Cloudia (tooosi pehmeää) ja kaksi kerää ohutta Noron Silk Gardenia. Vähän luulen että Sisut voisivat tehdä tuttavuutta Kool-Aidin kanssa ja alpakkapilvestä voisi tulla joku pitsihuivi joskus mutta muut vaativat lisää hiplailua ja mietiskelyä.

And yarn, of course! Three hanks of hand-spun blue-toned silk, two hanks of hand-spun dark violet merino wool, two hanks of blue-green KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud, two balls of light grey Sisu and two balls of thin Noro Silk Garden. I'm thinking that the Sisu yarn could get friendly with the Kool-Aids and that there is a lace scarf in Alpaca Cloud's future but the rest need more stroking and thought.

Ai, ja sitten oli vielä kännykkäkoru, mutta se pääsi jo puhelimeen japanista hankitun kissan seuraksi. Mutta kivaa, oli kuin olisi ollut aikainen joulu. Kiitoksia!

Se toimii sittenkin - It works after all

Blogger siis. Mokoma antoi siirtää kuvat aikaisemmin mutta kieltäytyi sitten yhteistyöstä pitkäksi aikaa, mokoma. Mutta nyt taas toimii.

Mitäpä tässä...huivitus ei ole vieläkään valmis, kun arvioin langanmääräni väärin ja jouduin hieman purkamaan sitä että saan vinon lopun myöskin. Mutta esittelen tässä neulekonekurssilla tekemäni mallitilkun. Ideana on tehdä neuletakki niin, että alaosa on punaista, vyötärön kohdalle tulee tämä kuvio ja neule jatkuu siitä sitten vihreänä. Kätevää, eikö? Lankana on käytetty PiikkoPirrasta tilaamaani King Cole Anti-Tickle Merino Blend-lankaa väreissä 43 (Bronze Green) ja 32 (Wine). Värit ovat todella kauniit ja sopivat hyvin yhteen. Tykkään! Mutta saa nähdä miten aika riittää...on kolme kertaa jäljellä ja minulla on vasta yksi hiha puolessa välissä.

Blogger that is. The darn thing let me upload the photos earlier but refused to co-operate after that. But it seems to work okay now.

So, not much going on. Scarfy is still unfinished because I was too optimistic as to how little yarn I would need to finish it and had to frog it in order to get a matching ending. But here's a photo of the pattern I'm making at my machine knitting class. The idea is to make a cardi where the bottom is wine coloured, then this pattern is at waist level and the piece continues green from that point onwards. Pretty clever, eh? The yarn I'm using is King Cole Anti-Tickle Merino Blend in 43 (Bronze Green) and 32 (Wine). Lovely colours that go very well together. I like! But I might end up being a bit rushed for time since we only have three times left and I only have one half of a sleeve finished so far.

Mutta ostin eilen jotain uutta, nimittäin repun. Ja mikä tärkeintä, niin siellä on sisällä lappu missä neuvotaan kuinka alpeilla pitää viestiä jos on jotain hätää. Ja siinä on integroitu istuinalusta. Mitäpä sitä muuta voisi toivoakaan?

I got something new yesterday, a new packpack that is. Inside is a very useful label telling how to communicate at the mountains if you have an emergency. And it has an integrated foam cushion. What else does a girl need?

Huivittaa - Scarfy

Eilen ei sitten suurimman osan päivää huvittanut tehdä mitään, mutta illalla sitten huivitti. Kaivoin noin vuosi sitten ostamani Samos-langat esiin ja ryhdyin tikuttamaan. Joku pälli ei kylläkään ollut ostanut sitä kuin kaksi kerää että ei nyt mitään hirveän pitkää huivia tule, mutta enpä haluakaan. Voisihan sitä ruveta epätoivoiseksi ja yrittää kysellä vieläkö löytyisi yksi kerä tätä jostain, mutta katsotaan nyt ensin mitä kahdesta saan aikaiseksi. Pinta on aivan ihanan pehmeää ja värikästä ja siksipä päätin tehdä jotain yksinkertaista. Ainaoikeaa vinosti ja välillä heitetään reikärivejä. Kaksi epämääräistä kuvaa tässä siksi, että en onnistunut ilman salamaa saamaan kunnon kuvaa kun kissa pomppi sohvalla ja salaman kanssa tuli vähän liian kirkkaat värit. Eli katso vasemmanpuoleista kuvaa vasemmalla silmällä ja oikeanpuoleista oikealla niin saat suunnilleen oikean 3D-surround sound real-colour vaikutelman.

Most of yesterday I was feeling very moody but in the evening I got scarfy and dug out the Samos-yarn I had bought about a year ago. But for some reason I had only bought two balls so I won't get very far. Though I suppose I could panic and start asking around if I could find another ball but maybe I'll save it after I see how long a scarf I get with just two. The yarn is very soft and lovely and has a nice hazy effect. I decided to keep it simple and just knit garter starting from one edge and making holes occasionally. Makes a nice-looking scarf, I think. Two photos because the cat kept bouncing on the sofa thus preventing me from getting a nice shot without the flash and with the flash the colours are too bright. But look at the left one with left eye and the right one with right eye and combine the image for perfect 3D-surround sound look-alike simulational view.

Epämääräistä mutinaa - Indistinct muttering

Kaikki on huonosti ja ei ole edes suklaata ja on liian laiska että jaksaisi lähteä ostamaan ja sitten sitä vaan valittaa ja sanoinko jo että kaikki on huonosti?

Päivä tähän asti:

1. karvainen idiootti ja tuleva rukkaspari päätti kahdeksalta että minun on sopiva aika herätä ja aloittaa päiväni kissan ylimmäisenä sylinä ja rapsuttajana - heräsin
2. menin koneelle, netti oli rikki
3. yritin katsoa nauhoittamaani elokuvaa, tv on rikki, suostui toimimaan 15 minuuttia ja sitten hävisi kuva kokonaan
4. kello olisi soinut vasta kymmeneltä
5. luin Hesarin
6. netti oli vieläkin rikki
7. telkku toimi vähän aikaa
8. minulla ei ole yhtään mitään luettavaa (siis eihän yli tuhannen kirjan joukosta voi löytyä mitään luettavaksi kelpaavaa)
9. haahuilin ympäriinsä ja join teetä ja söin
10. netti oli edelleen rikki
11. katsoin telkusta mangusteja ja minua rupesi väsyttämään
12. raahasin luuni spinning-tunnille ja sen jälkeen vatsa-selkäjumppaan
13. raahustin kotiin enkä tajunnut käydä hakemassa kaupasta suklaata
14. netti olisi korjautunut kuulemma wlanpurkin boottauksella, enpäs tiennyt kun se vaikutti ihan normaalilta
15. seuraavan kerran buuttaan ihan kaiken mahdollisen, kissankin
16. yritin taas katsoa em. elokuvaa telkusta, nyt se antoi sentään katsoa puolisen tuntia ennen pimahtamista
17. jatkoin yritystä pariin otteeseen
18. yritin silmukoida sukan kärjen silmukat yhteen, en onnistunut
19. en tajua mitään mistään
20. yritin uudestaan, nyt se meni hyvin, mutta kiristäessä silmukoita huomasin että langasta oli parista kohtaa nirhautunut yksi säie poikki, ei mitään havaintoa miten se oli tapahtunut
21. ihan kiva joo

Nothing goes well and I don't even have chocolate and I'm too lazy to go and buy some and I just feel like complaining and did I already mention that nothing goes well?

The day so far:

1. the hairy idiot and future pair of mittens decided at eight o'clock that it's about time I wake up and begin my day as her personal lap and scratcher - I woke up
2. went to the pc, the net was broken
3. tried to watch a movie I had saved but the tv is broken and only let me watch it about 15 minutes before losing the picture
   
4. I had set the alarm at ten
5. read the newspaper
6. the internet was still broken
7. the tv worked for a while
8. I have nothing to read (it's impossible to find anything to read in a collection of over 1000 volumes)
9. wondered around the house, ate and drank tea
10. the internet was still broken
11. watched some mangusts on the tv and got really, really tired
12. managed to drag myself to the spinning class and abs-back excercises after that
13. managed to drag myself home but was too tired to realize needed chocolate
14. could have repaired the internet by booting the wlan box but didn't realize that as it seemed to work ok
15. next time I'll boot everything, especially the cat
16. tried to watch the movie again, now managed about half an hour before no show
17. tried again a couple of times
18. tried to graft toe stitches of a sock, didn't have a clue
19. haven't got a clue
    
20. did it again and got it right this time only to notice while tightening the stitches that had managed to snap a thread in the yarn in couple of places - no clue as to how that happened
21. yeah, whatever

Palmikoita - Cables

Joopa joo, tämä päivä on ollut kiireinen, blogissa on ollut vilinää ja olen saanut jopa kuusi uutta lukijaakin blogilistan kautta. Ja Blogger käyttäytyy oudosti ja alleviivaa kaikki sanani punaisella (ei betaa vieläkään). Lisäksi harrastin empiiristä tutkimusta kitkan vähenemisestä tiukaksitallotusta lumesta eli suomeksi sanottuna liukastuin. Hieman surrealistinen kokemus, se ei ollut normaali viuh-pläts vaan kaikki tapahtui ikäänkuin hidastettuna. Jalka vaan lähti alta ja koko homma tapahtui hieman tyyliin menee-menee-menee - meni jo. Ilmeisesti en onnistunut satuttamaan mitään paikkaa pahasti vaikka toisen jalan nilkka oli hieman kipeä ja joku lihas revähti. On se vaarallista - talvi.

Well, well, this day surely has been a busy one. My blog has been visited numerous times and I think I even gained some new readers. And Blogger has decided to whine about my Finnish posts and underlines every word in red (nope, no beta here). I also engaged in an empiric study about the lack of friction in a densely packed snow - that is I fell on my ass. A bit of a surrealistic experience that was since everything happened in slow motion. It wasn't one of your average oops - splat -deals instead it was more of a going - going - gone. My foot just slipped and there was nothing else to do except wait. But apparently I managed not to hurt anything seriously just a sore ankle and a sprained muscle. It's dangerous, that winter.

Viime aikoina olen tehnyt tällaista matoa. Kyseessä on SNY:ltä saamani tummanlila alpakka ja olen neulonut siitä jättiläispalmikkoa. Se taitaa olla nyt valmis ja odottaa kiinnitystä...

Lately I've been knitting this - a giant gable. It's made of that dark violet alpaca I got from my secret knitting friend. Now I think it's finished and it is waiting to get attached...

...tähän. Eikö olekin kaunis tapa kaventaa silmukoita kaula-aukosta? Tehdään siihen palmikonkierto ja kavennetaan silmukat samalla. Malli on syksyn Vogue Knittingistä, tosin en oikein ymmärtänyt sanallista palmikonkierron selitystä täysin koska minusta siinä ne tehtiin väärin toiselle puolelle kaula-aukkoa. Mutta en antanut sen häiritä itseäni vaan tein ne kuten oikealta tuntui ja taisin onnistua ihan hyvin sillä kavennukset ovat sopivan peilikuvia. Ja eikun ompelemaan niin on taas valmis uusi neule. Tämän päivän kokemuksen perusteella voin sanoa että lanka on aivan todella hyvin neuleeksi sopivaa, jopa minullakin oli mukavan lämmin koko päivä - mutta ei kuuma.

...to this. Isn't this a lovely way to decrease stitches at the neck edge? Make a cable crossing and decrease stitches at the same time? The pattern is from this fall's Vogue Knitting but I must say that I did not fully understand the written instructions for the decreases for the other side. It seemed to me that it was done incorrectly but I just ignored that and did what I felt right. And I think I succeeded quite nicely for the neck edges look pretty much mirror images. Now it's just some sewing and I'll have a new knit. Based on today's experience I must say that this yarn makes a really nice knit. Soft but yet warm, even I was feeling warm at work all day. But not too hot.

Jotain sinistä - eiku valmista - Something blue..err...finished

Sairastamisesta huolimatta (tai ehkä juuri siitä syystä) täällä on valmistunut jotain. Kietaisuneule Dropsin alpakasta on tässä vaiheessa. Malli on jostain vanhasta Moda-lehdestä ja toteutus on koneella suurin osa, reunat tein jälkikäteen kun minun koneellani ei ainaoikein onnistu. Mitäpä tästä sanoisi...ehkä hieman leveä siitä tuli, ja noi kietaisukohdat (tai siis se mistä ne sivunauhat lähtevät) olisivat voineet olla hieman ylempänä. Mutta ihan nätti tästä silti mielestäni tuli. Valmistuikin vielä juuri sopivasti pakkasia varten. Väri on sellainen meleerattu petroolinsininen, mitä tietenkin on aika hankala kuvata.

Despite the sickness (or maybe because of it) I have managed to finish something. Presenting wrap-around cardi from Garnstudio (Drops) Alpaca. The pattern is from a Finnish knitting magazine, couple of years ago, and I made it mostly with my machine though I did do the edgings by hand afterwards since my machine does not do garter knit. What to say...it is a bit on the wide side but not disturbingly so and the wrap-parts (where the cords start) could have been a bit higher up. But it turned out quite pretty nonetheless. And I finished it just in time, the weather is getting colder here. The colour is nice petrol blue and difficult to photograph, of course.

Mutta se alpakka...siitä tulee nättiä neulepintaa ja neulominenkin sujuu mukavasti, mutta se nukkaa. Aivan hirveästi. Kuten näkyy - tässä on neulottu lilaa alpakkaa.

But the alpaca, it knits up beautifully and is easy to knit but it gives out this fluff. As you can see - I've knitted here with violet alpaca.

Ja tässäkin. Siitä tulee sellaista hienoa pölyä joka leviää joka paikkaan. Kivaa mutta sottaista.

And here too. It gives out fluff and this very fine powder-like stuff that gets everywhere. Nice but messy.

Tämä tupsahti perjantaina kotiin, paketti Martinan nettikaupasta. Ja koska kyseisestä kaupasta on viime aikoina keskusteltu, niin jaanpa minäkin mielipiteeni ja kokemukseni, jos vaikka jotain kiinnostaa.

Ensivaikutelma paketista oli lähinnä kauhistunut, sillä se irvisteli pahasti paikoittain ja sisus oli paljastunut. Pahvi oli sen verran pehmeää että se rikkoutui helposti juuri taitteiden kohdalla. Olisi kannattanut hieman enemmän tuota vahvisteteippiä laittaa, tai käyttää parempaa pahvia. Onneksi mitään ei sentään tippunut ulos, sillä paketissa oli runsaasti puikkoja jotka kyllä olisivat voineet luikahtaa ulos jos repeämä olisi ollut hieman eri paikassa. Tästä iso miinus.

This came home to me on Friday, a package from Martina's web store. And since there has been some discussion about this lately I thought I'd share my experiences in case it helps someone.

The first impression was horror, since the packet was torn in places and you could see straight into the soft center. The cardboard was so soft that it was easily torn at the corners and folds. They should have used more packing tape or used a stronger material. Luckily nothing was missing though that would have been entirely possible for there were plenty of needles in the order and they could have easily slipped out from a gash of that size. From that, a big minus.

Liikkeellepanevana voimana tilauksen tekemiseen oli tietysti se, että edellisessä ryhmätilauksessa jäin kaipaamaan kymmentä kerää OnLinen Supercool-lankaa ja kun sitä nyt oli (tarkistin etukäteen ja pyysin varaamaan) niin keräsin halukkaita mukaan ja käytin hyväkseni postimaksujen alennuspäivää (kerran kuukaudessa). Alennuspäivän ideana on se, että tilaus pitää tehdä sinä päivänä ja vain varastolangoista saa tuon alen. Mikä onkin tietysti ihan järkevä idea, jos nettikaupan varastotilanne vain olisi synkassa todellisen tilanteen kanssa. Eikä se tilauksen laiton jälkeen tuleva vahvistusmaili mitään auta, kun siinä vaan luetellaan ne kamat mitkä tilasi, ei sitä onko niitä vai ei. Jännitys säilyy siihen asti kunnes paketti lähtee, silloin sieltä tulee tieto että mitä lähti. Hieman...erikoinen systeemi, etten sanoisi.

Näitä tuli nyt kuitenkin, ja sain ne kymmenen kaipaamaani kerää, vihdoinkin. Lisäksi tilasin pienikokoisia Addin sukkapuikkoja (yhdet käytössä jo, aivan ihanat) ja tuo oikeassa alareunassa toinen vasemmalta oleva punaliila sukkalanka on kanssa minulle. Sitten vielä pari kerää sukkalankaa jotka eivät mahtuneet kuvaan ja loput muille. Tällä kertaa jäi puuttumaan vain joitain lankoja...

The main reason for this order was that I did not get all that I wanted in the previous order. I was left wanting ten balls of OnLine Supercool so this time I emailed ahead and asked them to hold them for me. Which happened, I think, though the answer was a bit unclear. But whatever the reason, this time I did get them. But, I did some asking around and managed to get several people interested in ordering so I took advantage of the day they have once a month when you get half off from p&p. The idea of that day is that the order has to be placed on the same day and only applies for yarns on stock, which is in itself a reasonable condition if only the situation when ordering actually matched the real stock situation. And the confirmation email they send you after ordering does not really help since it only lists all you intended to order. The real situation is revealed only when the order leaves, which is a bit late. A bit...peculiar situation in my opinion.

Well, this is what I got. You see my black yarns on top and the second on the left in the bottom row is also for me, some sock yarn. I also ordered some small Addi dpn's (one pair already in use, they're fantastic) and a couple of balls of sock yarn more that aren't in the picture. The rest are for other people. This time I was only a couple of balls short...

Mitäpä lopputulokseksi...no, paketti tulee suhteellisen nopeasti. Tilaus oli siis pe 20. pvä ja paketti oli täällä 27. pvä. Käytimme "secure shipping"-vaihtoehtoa, tuli kuriirilla, mutta en nyt tiedä paljonko hitaammin normaali postipaketti olisi kestänyt. Posti tosin voi käsitellä paketteja hieman rennommalla otteella ja moisen pehmeän pahvipaketin tapauksessa perille olisi varmaan tullut vain repaleita. Plussana siinä on se, että saa seurantanumeron. Kuten jo aiemmin mainitsinkin niin tilaussysteemi on omituinen. En ole törmännyt muissa paikoissa vastaaviin, siellä yleensä on lankaa jos siitä mainitaan sivuilla. Ehkä Martina uskoo siihen että varaston kiertonopeus pidetään suurena ja siispä varastot pieninä. Todennäköisesti en itse tilaa tuolta enää, mutta jos joku ryhmätilaus tulee niin ehkä voisin osallistua siihen, kunhan lanka ei ole mitään mitä todella haluan.

To sum things up...well, the packet was here reasonably fast. I placed the order on the 20th and it was here on 27th. We used the "secure shipping"-option so it was delivered by a courier. But I'm not so sure the normal post would have been that much slower though they might handle things more rougher. And with that kind of packing material I fear it would have disintegrated completely. And with that option you receive a tracking number. And as I mentioned earlier the ordering system is a bit peculiar. I have not come across that in other shops, usually they have yarn if it is mentioned on the web pages. But maybe Martina believes in keeping the stock small, very small. It is unlikely that I will order anything from there myself but I might take part in a group order again but be sure not to order anything I really need.

Näin täältä sairastuvalta tällä kertaa. Poden syysflunssaa, joskin räkätautiosuus on aika hyvin mennyt ohi, nyt on lämpöä. Niin tööt en enää kuitenkaan ole etten olisi neulomaan pystynyt. Molemmat alpakkaneuleet ovat edenneet ja sukkakin pari riviä. Rogue sen sijaan ei. Multitaskaus on hieman huonoa noin kuvallisen annin kannalta, mutta pitää muuten mielen virkeänä. Ehkä uusia neulekuvia jo huomenna!

This is all from here this time. I've got the autumn flu, though the stuffy feeling has passed somewhat but now the temperature is rising. Luckily I've managed to knit some. Both of my alpaca knits have progressed finely and the sock also a couple of rows. Rogue, however, has not. Multitasking is not good from a photogenic point of view but keeps the mind interested. Maybe some new knit photos tomorrow!

SNY-kivaa - SKF-fun

Olen ollut huono vastaanottaja, kun vasta tänään näitä pääsin blogailemaan. Itse lahjan sain hyppysiini jo maanantai-iltana, mutta silloin niin myöhään että tietokoneilu ei enää kiinnostanut. Tiistai meni sitten neuletapailemissa ja eilen olin laiska ja katselin leffoja. Tänään sitten! Olin jopa vapaalla, mutta valokuvia en kuitenkaan saanut otettua päiväsaikaan kun puuhailin neulekoneen kanssa. Laitoin tekeilyn alle SNY:n edellisessä lahjassa tulleet langat. Niitä oli viisi kerää, mutta sattumoisin minulla oli samaa väriä kolme kerää jemmattuna mahdollisia lapasia varten, joten otin ne mukaan leikkiin. Takakappale on valmis ja siihen meni vajaat sata grammaa. Vielä on jäljellä siis kuusi kerää, joista pitäsi tehdä etukappale, hihat ja kaula-aukkoa kehystävä palmikko (malli on Vogue Knittingistä). Saas nähdä riitääkö...

I've been a bad recipient since I only now am documenting these. The present itself I got already on Monday evening but so late that I did not have any interest in the computer. Tuesday I spent at our local knit-meet and yesterday I was just lazy and watched some movies. Today then! I even had a day off but still did not manage to get any photos while it was daylight for I was much too busy fooling around with my knitting machine. But I did not forget my secret knitting friend since I was playing with the yarns she sent me. There were five balls but luckily I had three balls of the exact same colour tucked away in my stash so they got to play too. I've done the back piece and spent a little less than 100 grams on it. So I have six balls left to make front piece, sleeves and the cable piece surrounding the neckline (the pattern is from a Vogue Knitting magazine). We'll see how it goes...

Mutta nyt tämänkertaiseen ylläriin: sievät lilat korvikset jotka sopivat lilaan lankaan (ja kah, nyt on sopiva hamekin), suklaata ja sievä kissakortti (tuo 55% suklaa on juuri sopivaa, ei liian kitkerää). Suklaakin on vielä avaamatta, omituista mutta totta. Sitä voisi säästää pahan päivän varalle.

But on to the surprise gift: pretty violet earrings (to go with the yarn and my new skirt), chocolate (the 55% is just right, not too bitter) and a cute kitty postcard. But what's odd I haven't even opened the chocolate yet. Strange but true. Maybe I'll save it for a really bad day.

But that's not all. I found this lovely lace scarf in the package also. It's dark blue...and is it a Flower Basket Shawl? It's lovely anyway. And guess who has a couple of winter coats it goes nicely with? One green and one black...Thank you SKF!

Uudet langat (ja kujeet) - New yarns (and tricks)

Uusia lankoja on taas ilmestynyt tänne Chez Niinaan ihan kiitettävästi. Eikä edes mitään lahjalankoja, itse olen lankani tilannut, nih! Ensimmäisenä esittelyssä on neulekonekurssia varten tilattu Piikkopirran King Cole Anti-tickle Merino Blend. Ko. kaupan värikartta ja -näytteet ovat sen verran huonoja että suosittelen ottamaan tilauksen mukana sen euron lankakartan. Mutta sinnikkäällä surffaamisella ja eri paikkojen värien vertailemisella sain haarukoitua vaihtoehdot kahteen lankaan (500g kerillä ei viitsi montaa ottaa), värit Wine (32) ja Bronze Green (43). Osuipa aika nappiin, värit ovat nätit ja sopivat yhteen hyvin. Tästä tulee jonkinlainen kaulukseton kirjoneulejakku missä kirjoneuleosuutta edustaa raita vyötärön kohdalla ja vastaavassa paikassa hihoissa. Siitä lisää myöhemmin kun se etenee kartiolta neuleeksi.

New yarns have been appearing here at Chez Niina lately and they are not gift-yarns, I have ordered them all by myself. First up is King Cole Anti-Tickle Merino Blend from Piikkopirta in two lovely colours, Wine (32) and Bronze Green (43). The colour samplers in that store are pretty much useless and after some googling and comparing colour charts from different sources I ended up with these two choises (with 500g cones two was more than enough). With a bit of good luck I ended up with perfect choises. Suitably different from each other but go well together. These are for my machine knitting class. Destined to become a simple fair-isle cardi with the fair-isle part represented by a wide band at the waist and sleeves. Simple, and hopefully elegant. More to come after the cardi has progressed beyond the cones.

Seuraavana kombokuva. Oikealla on viimeisimmät Colourmart-ostokset. Kirkas punalila on 50% kashmiria, 50% silkkiä ja kiilto on sen mukainen. 150g:n kartiolla oli alunperin noin 4200m lankaa, ja pyysin sen laittamaan nelinkertaiseksi. Nyt lanka vaikuttaa jo ihan käyttökelpoiselta ja silti metrejä on yli tuhat. Eiköhän tästä jotain saa. Ja vieressä pönöttää munakoison värinen kashmir/merino/viskoosi-sekoite. Yli 2000m/150g tässäkin, eli ohutta. Jommasta kummasta tulee minulle liivi, mutta en tiedä vielä kummasta. Toisesta voisi sitten tulla vaikka huivia. Katsellaan... Mutta enkös osannut ostaa Hulluilta Päiviltä oivan värisen hameen? Sopii SNY:n lahjoittamat alpakatkin väriltään täydellisesti. Ja eikun neulomaan!

Next a combo-picture. The two cones are my latest Colourmart purchases, the one on the right being bright plum, 50/50 cashmere and silk and the shine is just that lovely. On the original cone there was something like 4200m (/150g) and I asked them to wind it to 4-ply. Now there's still over 1000m on the cone but the yarn seems much more manageable. The aubergine one is cashmere/merino/viscose-blend and quite thin, over 2000m/150g. One of these will become a vest for me and the other one will become a scarf or something. Not sure yet which will be which. But look how well I succeeded in my skirt-purchase. Even the alpaca my secret friend gave me is a perfect match. And all without looking. On to knitting, then!

Mutta ensin pitää saada valmiiksi tämä: eli sukka Austermann Step-langasta (kyllä, siitä missä on aloe veraa ja jojobaöljyä). Päädyin Jaywalker-sukkiin koska tuntui siltä että siinä raidat pääsisivät oikeuksiinsa ja siltähän tuo näyttää. Eipä mitenkään kauhean öljyiseltä tuo tunnu, mutta mukavan pehmeää lankaa kuitenkin. Neulon sitä 2mm:n puikoilla ja en vieläkään ole löytänyt sarjan viidettä puikkoa joten bamburaukka saa toimia korvaajana. Mokoma on jo kovin käyrä ja joutuu koville, saa nähdä kauanko kestää.

But first I'll finish these. Socks from Austermann Step-yarn (yes, the one with aloe vera and jojoba oil). I decided to go with Jaywalker-socks, since it seemed like the stripey yarn would show off quite well in that pattern and so it does. It does not feel particularly oily but it is nice and soft to knit with. I'm using 2mm dpn:s and I still haven't located the fifth member of the party so the bamboo one will have to replace it. The poor thing is quite bent already and I just wonder how long it will last.

Vaaleanpunaista höttöä - Pink fluffiness

Sain sormikkaatkin valmiiksi, juuri sopivasti kun ilma rupeaa viilenemään. Näillä kyllä tarkenee, kun ovat mokomat 100% kashmiria. Lanka on huomattavasti kauniimpaa neulottuna kuin vyyhdillä, vaikka ei ihan minun väriäni olekaan, tuollasita harmaa-pinkkisekoitetta. Mutta mitäpä tässä valittamaan, sainpa langan ilmaiseksi kuitenkin. Tilasin Colourmartilta lankanäytteet ja he laittavat aina nöttösen pestyä lankaa mukaan. Mutta tämä nöttönen oli kuitenkin lähemmäs 50g ja siitä sai hyvin sormikkaat ja jäi 5g vielä ylikin.

I finally finished something, the gloves I showed in a previous post. Just in time, the weather is getting a bit chilly. These will keep my fingers warm for quite a while since they are 100% cashmere. The yarn is much nicer knitted than on the ball though it is not quite my colour being a pink-grey mix. But can't really complain since the yarn was free. I ordered the yarn samples from Colourmart and they include some washed yarn too. But this "some" was about 50 grams and that was more than enough for a pair of gloves and some left-overs (5g).

Mitäs näistä muuta...malli oli omasta päästä, mitä nyt vähän katsoin yhdestä kirjasta että miten niitä sormikkaita noin niinkuin yleisesti tehdään (ekat siis). Muuten nämä nyt ovat kuin suoraan oppikirjasta esimerkkinä kohdasta "näin EI tehdä sormikkaita", eli siis:

1. Älä missään nimessä kirjoita mitään silmukkamääriä ylös, älä edes aloitusmäärää. Kyllähän sen muistaa.
2. Älä ainakaan kirjoita ylös mitään muutoskohtia. Totta kai sen muistaa että peukalon jälkeen 54 silmukasta on mystisesti kadonnut jonnekin neljä silmukkaa. Ainakin siinä vaiheessa kun jakaa niitä silmukoita sormien tekoa varten ja ihmettelee noin viisi kertaa että "miten tässä etusormessa voi olla näin paljon silmukoita??".
3. Äläkä ainakaan käytä samanlaista kavennustyyliä kaikissa sormissa. Onhan se paljon hauskempaa kun osassa sormista on päätelty ihan eri tavalla ja sitten joudut purkamaan melkein kaikki muut ja tekemään ne uudestaan lopuksi.

Mutta kyllä niistä kaikesta huolimatta ihan pidettävät tuli. Ja ei, ohjetta ei missään nimessä nähdä seuraavassa Ullassa (joka sivumennen sanottuna on taas verottanut hieman neulomisaikaani).

What else to say...the pattern is pure me, except I did look at this book to find out how to do them in general (my first gloves you see). Other than that these could be used as a text-book example of how NOT to do gloves. Namely:

1. Never write down any stitch counts, not even the cast-on number. Just trust your memory.
2. At least don't bother writing down any deviations from said numbers. Of course you'll remember that after doing the thumb increases you mysteriously loose four stitches from the starting number of 54. At least after you have divided the stitches up for making the fingers and when doing the forefinger when you are wondering how on earth you could have so many stitches for one finger.
3. What ever you do, never finish the fingers all in a similar style. It is much nicer to notice that you have used multiple styles after you have completed the gloves and then re-do most of the finger tips.

But all in all they turned out quite usable. And no, the pattern will definitely not appear in the next Ulla (which has taken up my knit-time again).

Melkein mutta ei ihan - Close, but no cigar

Sire oli tilaamassa viime kuussa Martina's Bastel und Hobbykiste-kaupasta (kerran kuussa postimaksut puoleen hintaan) ja minähän sitten halusin heti mukaan. Into nyt ei ollut pelkkä "jee, lankaa" vaan tällä kertaa oli mielessä ihan tarve. Olen jo kauan himoinnut yhdessä Vogue Knitting-numerossa ollutta kirjoneulepaitaa (musta paita ja yläosassa kukkakuviota) mutta koska ohjeen vaatimaa lankaa ei saa täältä (Dale Tiur) ja vaikka sitä voisi tilata, niin mohairsekoite kaulan lähellä ei kuulosta tällaiselta kutiamaan taipuvaiselta kivalta. No, lopulta pitkällisen netissä surffailun jälkeen päädyin siihen että OnLinen Supercool (100% merino) voisi toimia korvaavana. Siinä on jopa mukava värivalikoimakin. Suomesta sitä saa Vihreästä Vyyhdistä, mutta heillä hinta on 4.50€/kerä ja koska sitä nyt tarvitaan kuitenkin jokunen (noin 10 mustaa ja 1kerä/väri muita viittä) niin en sitten ikinä saanut sitä ostetuksi. Vaan Martina myy sitä hintaan 3.80/kerä ja joukkotilauksella halvoilla postimaksuilla tuostahan tulee jo selvää säästöä! Ja eikun tilaamaan.

Sire was planning on ordering some knitting needles on Martina's Bastel und Hobbykiste (once a month orders half off on p&p) and I wanted in on that. The modus operandi this case wasn't pure "whee, yarn" for once, meaning I had a Plan. I've been long coveting this fair-isle sweater that was in Vogue Knitting a while ago (black with flower patters in upper part) but since they don't sell the required yarn here (Dale Tiur) and even though I could order it I don't fancy having a mohair blend close to my neck. I itch very, very easily. Well, after a lengthy internet-surfing session I came to the conclusion that OnLine's Supercool (100% merino) could work as a replacement. The thickness seemed ok, the yarn is soft and the colour range is wide enough. In Finland there is one shop close by that sells it, but they ask 4.50€/50g and since I would need quite a few (about ten of the black and one ball per five other colours) I never got around to actually buying it. But Martina sells it for 3.80 per ball and with group order and cheap postage fees that makes quite a saving. So, on to ordering then.

Ja koska nyt kerran tilattiin, niin lipsahtihan sitä mukaan paria muutakin lankaa, sukkalankoja. Niitähän aina tarvii ja ei nyt muistella niitä useita keriä mitä on jossain laatikonpohjalla, ehkä, vähän. Mutta siis pakkohan sitä on kokeilla Uusia ja Ihania lankoja, eikö? Ja koska Austermann Step oli halvennuksessa (6.95€), niin sitähän oli ihan pakko tilata. Värivalikoima on kyllä aika ärjy ja omituinen, mutta päädyin väriin 18, vulkan. Siihen oli kaksi syytä: se toi mieleen Mr. Spockin (no, eikö muka? Live long and prosper!), se näytti kivan tummalta ja mikä tärkeintä, siinä ei näyttänyt olevan niitä omituisia länttejä mitä niin monessa näyttää olevan (jaa, siinä taisi olla oikeastaan kolme syytä mutta mitä pienistä). Ihan sivuhuomautuksena vaan, eikö Saksalainen Sukkalankainsinööri ole kuullut yksivärisistä langoista? Täytyykö niihin aina saada kovin mielikuvitukselliset värit? Neulo nyt sitten raitalangalla kuviosukkaa, hah. No, mutta tuo aloe vera ja jojobaöljy-yhdistelmä kiinnostaa. Näin ensituntumalta lanka ei tunnu kovin öljyiseltä, mutta katsotaan miltä kädet tuntuvat neulomisen jälkeen. Suunnitelmissa oli aloittaa tuosta sukkia nyt viikonloppuna (mietin Jaywalkereita) mutta enpä sitten muistanut printata ohjetta, en. Jos kerrankin tekisi sukat ohjeen mukaan (jonkun muun siis).

And since we ordered I did get something a bit extra too. Sock yarn that is. One needs always sock yarns and let's not think about the ones I already have, shall we? One simply has to try out the New and Different yarns, isn't that so? And since Austermann Step was on sale (6.95€) I simply had to get one ball of it. The colours are a bit weird and peculiar but I ended up with number 18, vulkan. There were two reasons for this: it reminded me of Mr. Spock (yes, really, live long and prosper), it looked nice and dark and most importantly, it didn't seem to contain any weird spots that so many other colours do (well, I guess that was three reasons but who's counting). Just for the record here, why can't the German Sock Engineer think of unicoloured yarns? Or even something nice and soothing? Do all the sock yarns really have to be self-striping with weird colour combinations? Just try and knit a nice-looking patterned sock with a yarn like that. But the combination of aloe vera and jojoba oil seemed irresistible so I had to get it. Though after a first feel it doesn't feel that different from normal sock yarns. We'll see how it behaves once it is on the needles. Which I thought would have been this weekend (I'm thinking of Jaywalkers) but that didn't happen since I forgot to print out the pattern. Just for once I thought I'd try knitting socks from a pattern, somebody else's that is.

Tämä sitten hyppäsi koriin koska siinä on vaan niin kauniit värit. Niin mua (varsinkin noi yläosan). Opalin käsinvärjättyä, kesäyön unelma (summernachtstraum). Eipä siitä sitten muuta. Paitsi että olisin pälli vaan tajunnut tilata satsin sukkapuikkojakin, Addin vaikka. Tilaa siinä vaan sitten 2mm:n puikoilla neulottavia lankoja ja juuri siitä puikkosatsista on sitten yksi kateissa ja pitää käyttää korvaavana bambupuikkoa joista on jo yhden onnistunut saamaan katkipoikki niin onpa kivaa sitten niin.

This jumped into the basket just because the colours were (and are) so lovely. So me (especially the upper part). Opal handpainted in the summer night's dream colourway (summernachtstraum). That's about it then. Except me stupid should have realized to order some dpns too, Addi maybe, and not just get sock yarns that require 2mm needles when the metal set that I have is missing one and I have to use a bamboo needle as a replacement and I've managed to snap one of those previously so it does not bode well.

Mutta mistä moinen otsikko siis? No, tässä kuva kirjoneulepaidan langoista. Nättejä ovat juu, mutta näkyykö siinä kymmentä kerää mustaa? Tai edes yhtä? No ei näy. Mutta eikös siellä pitänyt sitä olla? No piti juu. Ja ihan nettisivujen mukaan varastossa olla? Kyllä, mutta nähtävästi se mikä on siellä ilmoitettu ja mikä on todellisuus ovat kaksi eri asiaa. Se siitä halvennuksesta sitten, olisin ne voinut sitten suoraankin ostaa Suomesta. Arvaa harmittaako? No juu! Ei kukaan ole tilaamassa tässä kuussa tuolta jotain?

But why the headline then? Well, in the above picture you can see the yarns for the fair-isle. Very pretty, but can you see ten balls of black yarn there? Or even one? No you can't. But weren't they suppose to have it? Yes they did. According to the web shop and all? Yes, but apparently what is said on the online shop and what is reality don't really mix. So much for the cheaper yarns then, I might as well bought them from Finland then. Guess if I'm annoyed? Hell yes!

Snyllätys - Surprise

Sainpa lahjuksen, paketin siis. Lahjojana oli salainen neuleystäväni ja paketista paljastui paketti, suklaata (syöty jo kaikki, röyh) ja korvikset. Tällä kertaa vuorossa oli pienet keltaiset perhoset. Yritin ottaa niistä kuvaa hiukan lähempää, mutta läpikuultavasta pienestä on vaikea saada mitään kovin esittävää joten jätin yritykset sikseen. Teidän täytyy siis vain kuvitella ne. Edellisiä olenkin jo pitänyt, mutta nämä ovat sen verran pienet että taitavat jäädä aikaan kaulaliinojen jälkeen (kevääseen ja kesään siis). Onnistun nimittäin taidokkaasti hukkaamaan kevyitä lukottomia korvakoruja kaulaliinojen avulla. Eipä siis kannata riskeerata.

I got a present, given by my secret knitting friend. Inside the packet I found a packet, some chocolate (at it already, pig that I am) and a pair of earrings. This time it was a pair of tiny light yellow butterflies. I tried to take a closer photo of them but it's difficult to get a sensible one out of something light and transparent. So after a couple of bad ones I gave it up. You'll just have to imagine them. The previous ones I've worn already but I think these I'll save for times after scarves (namely spring and summer) for I am good at losing light hook-earrings with the aid of scarves. Don't want to tempt it, that is.

Sinisen paketin sisältä paljastui lankaa, sitä aina niin ihanaa Dropsin alpakkaa tumman lilana, 250g. Tästähän saa jo vaikka mitä. Luulisin että siitä voisi tulla kaveria hieman samanväriselle untuvatakille...tarvetta olisi lämpimille lapasille, koska raukkoja sormiani paleltaa aina niin kovasti. Tulisikohan tästä kivaa huovuttamalla?

Inside the blue packet I found yarn, that always lovely Drops (Garnstudio) Alpaca in dark violet. 250 grams of it, enough to make lots of things. But I think I would like to have something to go with the down jacket I got for last winter since it's almost the same colour. Something for my poor fingers for they suffer the cold so. Maybe I should try felting it?

Thunder and lightning, isn't it frightening?

Ihan kiitettävästi on tullut molempia tänään ja sadetta myöskin. Jotenkin on ollut hieman surrealistinen olo, eihän tällainen sää kuulu lokakuuhun vaan kesään. Nyt on syksy, ei saa ukkostaa ei. Tosin eipä se piitannut minun mielipiteistäni, ukkostipahan vaan. Saa nähdä tuleeko illan ja yön aikana vielä lisää.

There has been plenty of both today, and rain too. I've had this somewhat surrealistic feeling all day since this is not a suitable weather for October. It is a summer weather and we can't have that now, it's autumn. Although it didn't mind my thoughts just went on thundering. Maybe we'll get more during the night, it remains to be seen.

Mutta vihdoinkin jotain valmista, nimittäin oikean käden sormikas. Etusormen silmukat on vielä päättelemättä kun voi olla että sitä joutuu purkamaan hieman. Taitaa olla hiukka liian pitkä. Muuten aivan ihanan tuntuiset sormikkaat. Toinen on edennyt jo sormientekovaiheeseen. Ehkä se tässä tulevat valmiiksi ennenkuin on jo lapaskeli.

But finally something finished, the right hand glove that is. I haven't bound off the stitches on the forefinger yet since I think I might have to make it a bit shorter after all. But other than that they're just right and very comfy. The other one has progressed to the bit where I have to start making the fingers. So there's hope of getting them finished before it's time to change to mittens.

Sairautta - Sickness

Se siitä matalalennosta, tuli nimittäin äkkipysähdys keskiviikkona kun vietin työpäivän villahuivi kaulan ympärillä ja illan sohvalla kissan seurassa. Ikävää kuumeilua ja yleistä tukkoista oloa ilman kauheata räkätautia kuitenkaan. Mutta niin sairas en sentään ole ollut etten neulomaan olisi pystynyt. Aloitin elämäni ensimmäisiä sormikkaita 100% kashmirlangasta. Tilasin joku aika sitten ilmaisia lankanäytteitä Colourmart-yritykseltä ja paksuusnäytteiden kanssa oli pari nöttöstä lankaa. Tai no, toista oli 50g ja toista ehkä hiukan enemmän. Näistä vaaleanpunakirjava päätyi toissapäivänä puikoille. Ja purettiinkin jo kerran kun meinasi tulla liian leveätä. Lankaa on nyt mennyt 12g. Riittoisaa, etten sanoisi. Ei ehkä ihan omin väri, mutta tuntuu ihanan pehmeältä ja on mukava neuloa.

That low flying ended up in a crash landing on Wednesday when after spending the work-day with a woolly scarf wrapped around my neck I ended up spending the evening on the sofa with my cat. Unpleasant case of slight fever and general ickyness without the full blown runny nose-syndrome. But I haven't been too sick to knit so I started my very first pair of gloves out of 100% cashmere. A while ago I ordered the free sample pack from Colourmart and included were two small skeins of yarn. Well, smallness in this case was quite relative since there was 50g of the one yarn and about the same or a bit more of the other. Out of these the pinkish one ended up on the needles. And it was ripped once too since the glove was going to get a bit too large. So far I've spent 12 grams of yarn. Not bad, eh?

Ohje on silkkaa sekasotkua, osittain omasta päästä ja osittain Anita Gunnarsin Tee itse kauniit neuleet-kirjan avulla. Tein varsiosan 2mm:n puikoilla koska kashmirissa ei ole kauheasti luontaista joustavuutta (toisin kuin villassa) ja siksi resorit pitäisi tehdä tiukaksi jotta ne eivät löpsähtäisi. Harmi vaan että metallisisesta puikkosastsista on yksi karkusalla niin tilalle piti ottaa bambupuikko. Noin ohuet eivät kyllä minulla kestä, mutta selvisi raukka nyt hengissä. Jatkoin 2.5mm:n puikoilla ranneosan jälkeen vaikka päätinkin jatkaa ribbiä kämmenselälle. Lopetin sen kun aloitin sormet, en nyt vielä tiedä onko tulos kiva vai ei, mutta tuskin kuitenkaan purkuun menee. Tietenkään minulla ei sitten ole 2.5mm:n sormikaspuikkoja, joten pidemmät saavat kelvata. Huomasinpa siis samalla että tarvetta olisi kasvattaa pienemmän pään metallisten puikkojen valikoimaa. Olisivatkohan metalliset Addin sukkapuikot kivat?

The pattern is pure jumble, partly from my own head and partly with the aid of Anita Gunnars' book. I made the wrist part with 2mm needles because kashmir doesn't have that bounce that wool has so rib should be made tight. It's just too bad that one of the needles from the metal set has gone missing and I had to replace it with a bamboo one. I'm just no good with wooden needles that thin but the poor thing survived this time. I continued with 2.5mm needles even though I continued the rib at the back of the hand. I finished that once I started with the fingers and I'm not sure if that will turn out nice or not but I won't rip in any case. And of course I don't have any metal glove needles so longer ones will have to do. But I did discover that my selection of metal needles is sorely lacking in the small size section. Maybe I should get some metal Addi dpns?

Matalakiitoa - Flying low

Kotiuduin juuri teatterista (juu, sillä reissulla edelleen) ja totesin olevani aivan liian selvä juoppobussiin. Mutta tökin sentään hereille yhden mieshenkilön koska yritin olla avulias ja selvisi että olinkin, koska raukka oli menossa Munkkivuoreen mutta ei noilla Espoon busseilla sinne helposti päästä. Päivän hyvä työ tehty siis. Näytelmä oli oikein hauska, Täti ja minä. En suosittele ihmisille jotka eivät ymmärrä mustaa huumoria. Meinasi vaan jäädä teatterimatka puolitiehen minulta kun olin saanut päähäni että näytös alkaa 19:30 ja varauduin siihen. Kiva saada vahvistusta epämääräiselle "olikohan se sittenkin seitsemältä"'-aavistukselle bussissa puolimatkassa Helsingin keskustaan kello 18:40. Näinpä siitä selvisin hyppäämällä kesken pois ja bongaamalla taksin. Teatteriin kun ei oikein pääse enää ovien sulkemisen jälkeen, niinkun elokuviin. Mutta täytyy sanoa että ensimmäinen kerta kuin noin kävi. Tosin olinhan paikalla jo melkein kymmentä vaille!

I just got home from my theatre trip and I discovered I was much too sober to take a late night drunken bus. But I managed to poke awake one man for trying to be helpful and as it happened I was being one since the poor dear was in a wrong bus altogether. Good deed for the day done then. The play was much fun, Auntie and me by Canadien Morris Panych. However, I do not recommend that for persons who don't appreciate black humour. Although my theater experience was in a danger of becoming a short one since I got it into my head that the play was to start at 19:30. Nice to get confirmation for your vague "I wonder if it started at seven still" at the bus, half way to town, at twenty to seven. But it was saved by me jumping off the bus and catching a taxi and getting to the theatre with minutes to spare. It's not like at the movies you know, when you can still sneak in after the movie has started.

Koska viikko on taas ollut hieman matalalentoa (ma kaverilla, ti viiniklubi, ke neulekonekurssi, to japaninkurssi ja pe jumppaa) niin eipä tässä ole paljoa ehtinyt neuloskelemaan. Mutta Drops-neuletakki etenee hitaasti mutta varmasti ja siinä on jo yksi hiha kiinni ja etunauhaa neulottu melkein riittävästi. Tässä kissallinen kuva...meillä oli joku Pariisi-Dakar-ralli meneillään juuri tuolloin ja reitti kulki juurikin neuletakin halki.

Since the week has been kind of like flying low for me (mo visiting a frien, tue wine club, wed machine knitting course, thu Japanese class, fri gym) I haven't had much time for conventional knitting. But the Drops cardi is progressing slowly but surely, I even got one sleeve attached, see? And the front band is about done. The cat photo was unavoidable, we had some world rally going on and the route went straight through the sleeve. Can't be helped.

Ulkoilua osa II - Outing part II

Pahoittelen haamupäivitystä...se tuli siitä että aloitin aamulla entryä ja jouduin keskeyttämään sen jumpan vuoksi ja pääsen vasta nyt takaisin. Että siinä se syy. Palataanpa nyt itse asiaan.

Tämä on tarina siitä, kuinka menin Tallinnaan ja en edes ostanut paljon lankaa. Aloitetaanpa:

Kylmänä ja tuulisena lauantaiaamuna neljä urheaa neulojaa aloitti matkansa katamaraanilla Tallinnaan. Kyseessä oli kymmenen vuoro...ja antaakseni hiukan kuvaa vallitsevista olosuhteista kerron että edellinen vuoro oli peruttu kovan kelin vuoksi. Ja kova se olikin. Sain karistaa mielestä kaikki ajatukset teen ja voileivän nauttimisesta matkalla ja keskittyä siihen että aikaisemmin nautittu aamiainen pysyi siellä missä pitikin eikä päätynyt auliisti jaettavien muovipussien pohjalle. Kaikki ryhmässämme (ja kanssamatkustajistamme) eivät kuitenkaan olleet näin onnekkaita. Mutta se siitä, olipa sekin - kokemus.

Sorry about the false positive. I was writing this entry in the morning and had to save it to drafts due to a spinning class and I could get back to it only now. So that was it, back to scheduled program.

This is a story about how I went to Tallinn and didn't even buy that much yarn. Let's begin:

On a cold and windy Saturday morning four brave knitters started their trip with a Nordic Jet Line catamaran towards Tallinn. It was the ten o'clock ferry...and to give you and idea of the prevailing conditions I'll just mention that the previous ferry was cancelled due to weather conditions. And boy, those were really conditions. I had to abandon all toughts about having tea and a sandwich on the way and concentrate on keeping the previously enjoyed quick breakfast inside where it should belong and not to have it end up inside one of those plastic bags they provided. All in our group (and amongst our fellow passangers) were not so fortunate. But that's that, it surely was - an experience.

Tallinnaan saavuttuamme menimme ensimmäisenä hieman pyörimään Sadamarketiin. Sieltä löytyi liukuvärjättyjä villalankoja, yksivärisiä lankoja ja hahtuvia parista kaupasta mutta mukaan ei tarttunut mitään. Ja paluumatkalla emme enää sinne ehtineet, mikä sinänsä oli harmi sillä parhaimmat valikoimat juurikin noita liukuvärjättyjä oli siellä. Vaikuttaa siltä että innokkaat neulojat ovat tyhjentäneet keskustan liikkeet niistä aika tehokkaasti ja tarjolla oli vain suppea valikoima.

Seuraavaksi kävelimme lankakauppaan josta mainittiin myös Cairbren blogissa (siellä osoite ja linkissä enemmän). Kuvista katsottuna valikoima näyttää laajemmalta ja kauppa isommalta mutta niin ei ollut laita. Aika pieni liike ja valikoimissa yksivärisiä virolaisia villalankoja. Tosin jos merinovillaa kaipaa niin sitä löytyi joitain värejä täältä. Mutta me koimme käynnin aika turhaksi.

Once we reached Tallinn we went first to Sadamarket (close to the harbour). There we found some of the lovely Estonian multicoloured wool yarns that even I have bought before. Didn't get any though and on the way back to the harbour we missed it (it was closed already). Which was a shame since they really do seem to have the widest variety of those yarns these days. I guess eager knitters have thinned the shops in the center for the offerings were a bit slim.

Next we visited the yarn shop mentioned in Cairbre's blog (the address was there and more in the link). Looking at the photos the shop looks bigger and the stock larger but that was not the case. It was a really small shop and most of the yarns there were Estonian wool yarns, just the regular kind. There was some merino wool too, some colours. But we found the shop a bit pointless to visit.

Sitten matka jatkui tuttuihin ja turvallisiin...ensin Liann ja sitten Filati (Müürivahe 20). Liannista tarttui mukaan vain kaksi kerää mustaa alpakkaa ja ristipistotyö äidille. Siellä oli myös ihania käsintehtyjä nappeja, mutta en osannut ostaa mitään kun se tuli niin äkkiä. Mutta tiedänpä varautua sitten seuraavaa kertaa varten. Filatista sitten tarttui mukaan lempilankaani OnLinen Kaschmerinoa (56% merinovillaa, 30% mikrokuitua ja 14% kashmiria) ihanana tumman fuksian punaisena. Ja juu, tiedän että tässä blogissa on nähty saman sävyisiä lankoja viimeaikoina runsaasti, mutta se nyt on vaan NIIN ihana väri. Ja kun värivaihtoehtoja ei todellakaan ollut mitenkään hurjasti. Tämä voisi haluta koneella neulotuksi yksinkertaiseksi neuletakiksi johon voisi sitten tuunata jotain koristeluja. Aika näyttää, ideoita on. Sieltä tarttui lisäksi kolme kerää puuvillalankaa, Japaninkissaa varten.

Then on to the old and the familiar...first Liann and then Filati (Müürivahe 20). From Liann I got two skeins of black alpaca and a cross stitch package for my Mother. They had also some lovely hand made buttons there, but I couldn't get any since it was so sudden. But I'll be better prepared next time. And from Filati I got my absolute favourite, OnLine Kaschmerino (56% merino wool, 30% microfibre and 14% kashmir) in lovely dark fuchsia. Yes, yes, I know you've seen similar shades in this blog a lot lately but I just like that colour. And they didn't have that many colours to choose from btw. That might want to become a simple machine-knitted cardi with some sewn trimmings. We'll see, I have some nice ideas. Also got three skeins of cotton yarn for a Japankitty.

Ja jostain matkanvarrelta tuli mukaan liukuvärjätty vironvillakin. Tämä kaveriksi kotona odottaneelle, jotain huovutettua, ehkä neuletakki. Siinäpä ne, lankaostokset.

And somewhere along the line I picked up a skein of multicoloured Estonian wool. As a pal for the ones waiting at home, destined to become something felted, like a jacket. These were those, yarn purchases.

Ostelinhan minä hieman muutakin elintärkeää, kuten kynsilakkoja. Nämä kaksi. Molemmat ovat sellaisia helmiäiskiiltoisia aika läpinäkyviä mistä tulee kynsille vain hauskaa hohdetta helmiäisen tapaan. Voi sitä välillä olla vähän hillitympikin. Lisäksi täydensin laivalla deodoranttivalikoimaani kun löysin kauan etsimääni Dolce&Gabbanan Light Blue-sarjan tuotetta valikoimista. Tätä minulla oli joskus ja silloisen loputtua yritin löytää uutta huonolla menestyksellä. Tuli katsottua parista maasta ja lentokentältä mutta nyt onnisti. Olen alumiinivammainen, eli en voi käyttää näitä niin suosittuja antiperspirantteja niiden sisältämien alumiinisuolojen kanssa ja en myöskään pidä voimakkaista hajusteista joten varastoja kannattaa täydentää aina silloin kun on mahdollisuus. Siinä on mieto raikas tuoksu josta pidän. Eli kaikenkaikkiaan ihan onnistunut matka (jos menomatkan jättää pois). Takaisintulomatka oli myös tuulinen, mutta onnistuneempi paikansaanti pelasti matkan (keskellä laivaa).

I did buy some other essential things like these two. Nailpolish in pearly shades of blue and old rose. One can be a bit subtler at times. Also I got some addition to my deodorants at the ship when I noticed they carried the stick from Dolce&Gabbana's Light Blue series. I had one and it ran out and a replacement was really hard to find. Been looking in couple of countries and airports with no luck, until now. I'm aluminiumly challenged meaning I can't use these so popular antiperspirants because of the aluminium compounds they have and I do not like strong smells either. But this one has a nice fresh smell that I like. So all in all a pretty successful trip (not counting the way there). The way back was windy also but we managed to get much better seats on the ferry (in the middle of the ship) and that made all the difference.

Ulkoilua - Outing

Tänään nautimme tiimivirkistyksestä viiden hengen voimin (tiimissä 13 henkeä) - no, ok, kolmella oli ihan hyvä syy mutta loppuja syytämme laiskuudesta ja lusmuilusta. Mutta olipa meille viidelle sitä enemmän ruokaa ja juomaa, mikäs tässä. Ulkoilumuoto tällä kertaa oli purjehdus. Toinen kertani ikuna moisella paatilla. Kokemusta on suuremmista (rahtilaivat, matkustajalaivat ja sellaiset) ja pienemmistä (kanootti) mutta purjelaiva on se suuri tuntematon minulle. Ja tunsinpa itseni hieman hölmöksi ja ylipukeutuneeksi laiturilla lämpökerrastossani ja tuulen/sateenpitävissä päällivaatteissani. Vaan kunhan pursi erkani hieman laituria kauemmaksi niin oloni muuttui sitä paremmaksi - eli vaatevalintani osui oikein nappiin ja oli mukavaa. Kiersimme Suomenlinnan ympäri ja rantauduimme vierasvenesatamaan jossa nautimme illallista (ruoka oli hyvää ja sitä oli enemmän kuin riittävästi) ja takaisin Lauttasaareen ajoimme moottorilla koska sää oli äitynyt kovin sateiseksi ja tuuliseksi sillävälin. Kivaa oli, tykkäsin. En ehkä kuitenkaan niin paljon innostunut että säntäisin heti omaa purjevenettä ostamaan, mutta kuitenkin.

Today we enjoyed team building activities with five persons (our team consists of 13 persons) - well, ok, three had good and valid reasons for not being there but rest we blame on laziness and poor behaviour. But all the more food and drink for the five of us then. The activity in question this time was sailing. It was my second time ever on a sailing boat. I have experience with bigger boats (cargo and passanger ships and such) and smaller (canoe) but the sailing boat is the great unknown for me. And boy, did I feel overdressed at the harbour with my thermal underwear and rain/windproof outer layer. But as soon as the ship sailed away I felt much better - my choise of clothing was just right and I felt quite nice. We went around Sveaborg and went on shore at the guest harbour where we enjoyed our dinner (food was nice and there was more than enough of it) and back to Lauttasaari we went by motor since the weather had gotten quite rainy and windy in the mean time. It was nice, I liked it a lot. Maybe not that much that I'd go out and buy me a one but still.

Neulerintamalle kuuluu seuraavaa: Drops-takki on ommeltu kasaan jo aika hyvin, nyt pitää vaan hihat tilsiä paikalleen ja etureuna/nauha ommella. Eli ollaan siis reilusti voiton puolella. Rogue on taas talviunella ja eipä sitten muuta. Viime entryn jälkeen olen kasvattanut neulekirjastoani parilla kirjalla. Ensimmäiseksi Melvillen kirjat: the knit stitch ja the purl stitch. Tiedän kyllä että joidenkin mielestä nämä ovat oikein mainioita kirjoja, mutta totean vain että: öh, me no like. Eivät oikein ole minun tyylisiä kirjoja. Joten jos joku haluaa nämä ostaan niin myyn ne samaan hintaan millä ostin, 10€/kirja+pk. Tai vaihtareita.

On the knitting front the news are as follows: Drops alpaca cardi is getting along fine...all that is missing is attaching the sleeves and the front band/belt thingy. So we're doing really good here. Rogue is hibernating again and well, that's all there is. But I have updated my knitting library with some new books. First we got Melville's knit stitch and purl stitch. I do know that some people think the world for these but I have just this to say: me no like. And if someone's interested in a swap I'm all for it.

Mutta tästä tykkään kyllä, eli Ruth Leen Creative machine knitting. Neuleissa on jotain kasarihenkistä (vaikka kirja on tältä vuosituhannelta), mutta niin on usein mielestäni jenkki-ja brittineulesuunnittelijoilla. Mutta silti kirjassa on pari ihan toteuttamiskelpoista neuletta mutta mikä niitäkin tärkeämpää niin hyvin ideoita ja neuvoja, vaikka sivuja lärpyskässä on vain vähän yli 100. Me like, me like a lot. 10+.

But this I do like, that is Creative Machine Knitting by Ruth Lee. There's something very 80's in some of the patterns (even though it is from this century) but then again I've often noticed the same trend in many American and British designers. But still there is a couple of patterns that are quite doable and what's even more important there's plenty of good advice and examples even though there's only a bit over 100 pages all in all. Me like, me like a lot.

Messuilla - At the fair

Kävinpä minäkin Kädentaito-messulla tänään. Mitään en ostanut...paitsi nämä. Ensimmäinen oli ihan suunniteltu ostos kun sattui eteen...kaveri näille koruille. (Ja joo, nyt juon White Ladya samalla). Tämän minulle möi Kelttikorut. Ei ehkä ihan täydellinen pari, muttakun korut eivät olleet päällä. Close enough, sanon minä.

I went too to the handicraft fair. And bought nothing...except these. First was planned purchase when I came across celtic jewellery. I needed a pair for these. (And yes, incidentally, I'm sipping a White Lady when writing this). This was sold to me by Celtic Jewellery. Maybe not a perfect match (I was not wearing them) but close enough, I say.

Toinen oli sitten ihan rehellinen heräteostos. Nomutta, -50% ja aivan ihku, kuka sitä nyt voisi vastustaa? Varsinkaan neuloja...mitä isommat prosentit, sitä parempi, eikös?

The second one was pure indulgence. Buthen, -50% and quite lovely, who can resist an offer like that? Not a knitter that's for sure...the higher the percentage the better, eh?

Ja tarkkasilmäisimmät ovat varmaan huomanneet että rekvisiittana kuvissa käytettiin lankaa. Se olikin se ainoa mitä sieltä ostin, eli Wetterhoffilta koelankaa, 70% villa, 30% silkkiä ja 2.90 50g. Meinasin ostaa kartion (1.4kg) mutta en ollut oikein varma miten kone siitä selviäisi ja päätin sitten kokeilla pienemmällä määrällä. He lupasivat lähettää minulle kartion jos sellaisen haluan. Että kokeilemaan.

And those with keen eyes have possibly noticed that yarn was used as a prop in the above photos. It was the only yarn I bought there. It was a test yarn from Wetterhof, 70% wool, 30% silk and 2.90€/50g. I was thinking of buying a cone (1.4kg) but I was not sure how the machine would handle it so I decided to try it out. We'll see, they promised to send me the cone if I want it.
