Viime viikonloppuna - Last weekend

Nyt onnistuin olemaan ilmoittautumisaikana koneen ääressä ja pääsin mukaan neuleretriittiin. Kyseessä on järjestyksessä neljäs ja minulla toinen.

This time I managed to be on the web at the correct time and got to join the knitting retreat. This was the 4th of its kind and my second.

Koolla oli suunnilleen 50 naista ja ohjelmaan kuului kehräämistä, neulomista, syömistä, juomista, juttelua, nauramista, saunomista ja olipa pari työpajaakin tarjolla.

There was about 50 women and on the agenda was spinning, knitting, eating, drinking, talking, laughing, sauna and even a couple of workshops.

Itse en kehrännyt enkä ottanut osaa työpajoihin, muuta tuli kyllä tehtyä. Tässä toisen retriittineuleen langat: 100% merinoa Wollmeiselta, väreissä Petit Poison nr 5 ja Maus Alt.

I did not spin or take part in the workshops, everything else I did. Here's the colours of one of the two retreat knits I brought with me. The yarn is 100% merino from Wollmeise in colours Petit Poison nr 5 wd and Maus Alt.

Tässä toinen, Rhombus-sukat äidille. Lankana taas Wollmeise, nyt sukkalankasekoitusta, twiniä, värissä Türkis. Aloitukseen keksin kolmannen version ja tämäkin näyttää hyvältä.

This is the other and yarn is Wollmeise also but this time in twin and the colour is Türkis. The pattern is my own, Rhombus, and these will be for my Mom. I came up with a third version for the beginning and it looks good also.

Näin aika paljon erilaisia Reinoja sekä sisä- että ulkokenkinä ja mietin että sellaiset olisivat aika kätevät sisäkengät. Itselläni oli sisällä pelkät villasukat ja välillä tuntui pientä kylmyyttä jaloissa kun jostain veti. Ehkä vaaleansini-ruskeat olisivat kivat...



I saw a lot of Reino-shoes used both as outdoor and indoor wear (not at the same time of course) and I started thinking that maybe I should get a pair too. I used only woollen socks indoors and sometimes my feet felt a bit cold when there was a draft. I'm thinking maybe the ones with light blue and brown...

Lankakirpputorille en vienyt tälläkään kertaa myytävää enkä sieltä mitään ostanut, mutta muuten tuli ostoksia tehtyä. Tuulialla oli jokunen laatikko värjättyjä kuitutuotteita tarjolla ja pituudesta oli hyötyä tällä kertaa kun neulojalauma parveili myyntipöydän ympärillä. Ostinpa sitten silkkinessuja paketin. En edelleenkään kehrää, mutta näitä voi neuloa ihan suoraankin, sain opastusta. Ja ovat kuulemma nyt niin kovin muodikkaita joten kerrankin olen trendikäs.
Ai mitäkö niistä meinasin tehdä? Jonkun huivin varmaankin.

I did not take any yarn to the "for sale" table this time either nor did I pick anything up from there. However, I did buy some stuff. Tuulia had a box or three of her own dyeings for sale. My height was an advantage when a horde of knitters swarmed around the offerings. I picked up a packet of silk hankies. I still do not spin but I was told I could knit them straight from the hankies (I got a demonstration). And I was told they are also very in at the moment. It seems as though I'm very "in the moment" for once. Oh, what am I going to do with them? Probably a scarf.

Ikävästi sattui taas kellojen siirto retriittiviikonloppuun. Asiaa auttoi kyllä hieman se että emme huonekaverin kanssa menneet aamiaiselle kumpanakaan aamuna vaan nukuimme hieman pidempään. Olo on tällä hetkellä kyllä hieman vetämätön mokoman ajansiirtelypelleilyn vuoksi, mutta eiköhän se siitä tasaannu viimeistään ensi viikonloppuna.

Unfortunately the summer time time-shift happened during the retreat. It was not so bad this time since neither me nor my roommate went to breakfast on either morning but slept instead. I'm feeling a bit extra tired at the moment because of the whole time-stuff but I think I'll get back to normal during the weekend at the latest.

Messuhankintoja - Craft fair purchases

Maaliskuun aloittaa mukavasti Helsingin Kädentaitomessut Wanhassa satamassa. Viime syksyisestä poiketen päädyin kanssaneulojan kera messuille vasta joskus kahden maissa iltapäivällä. Aika oli kätevä, koska messuilla mahtui etenemään kunnolla eikä tarvinnut turvautua kyynärpäätaktiikkaan ja osastoillekin mahtui.

Tällä kertaa en löytänyt sitä mitä menin hakemaan - nimittäin koruntekoon sopivaa puuvillanyöriä, vahattuna tai ilman ja mielellään tummanvihreänä - mutta jotain muuta tarttui mukaan. Titityyn kojulta ostin harmaata BC-garnin Sarah Tweed silkkiskoitelankaa (50% mulperisilkkiä, 10 % bourettesilkkiä ja 40% villaa). Kujeelta ostin kaunista tummaa Shibui Knitsin Sock-lankaa värissä Ink (keskimmäinen) ja myös vyyhdin sinivihreää Cascade Yarsin Heritage-sukkalankaa, joka ei valitettavasti päässyt kuvaan. Villakivellä on myynnissä sekä villaa että korutarvikkeita, mutta tällä kertaa sieltä lähti mukaan lankaa. 3 kahden hinnalla oli houkutteleva tarjous ja langan väri kaunis. Kolme vyyhtiä Punta Yarnsin Merisoft Solid-lankaa tummana turkoosina/petroolinsinisenä siis.

The craft fair in Helsinki Wanha satama is a good way to start March. I went there with a fellow knitter on Saturday. Contrary to last autumn we arrived at the fair quite late on the afternoon, around two o'clock. That was actually a very good time for there was plenty of room on the aisles and we did not have to resort to elbows to get to the stands.

This time I did not find what I went there to get - that is cotton string suitable for jewellery use, waxed or not, preferably in dark green - but I picked up a couple of this and a couple of that. From Titityy I picked up a few skeins of BC Garn Sarah Tweed silk-wook yarn (50% mulberry silk, 10% bourette silk, 40% wool) in grey. The one in the middle is from yarn shop Kuje and is Shibui Knits Shibui Sock in Ink. I also bought a skein of Cascade Yarns Heritage sock yarn but I forgot to put it into the picture. The one in the top is from Villakivi for their 3 for the price of 2 offer was tempting. It is Punta Yarns Merisoft Solid in dark turquoise/petrol.

Helmien talosta poimin mukaani muutaman helminauhan vaikka heillä ei mitään messutarjouksia näyttänytkään olevan. Eri kokoisia lasihelmiä turkoosina ja rusehtavana ja hieman blingiä: kiinalaisia kristallihelmiä paria kokoa. Ilmeisesti nauhojen kuvaaminen samalla kertaa ei ollut oikein hyvä idea koska en saanut kristalleja toistumaan oikean värisinä eikä kuvankäsittelykään siinä auttanut. Ne ovat luonnossa voimakkaan sinivihreitä. Kyllä, sinivihreä kausi jatkuu edelleen.

From Helmien talo I picked up some bead strings even though they did not seem to have any fair specials. Some glass beads in turquoise and brown, in three sizes. Also a bit of bling: Chinese crystal beads, big and small. It obviously was not a good idea to photograph them all at once for I could not get the crystals to turn out right even thought I tried some serious photoshopping. But they are really quite strong blue-green colour. Yes, my bluish green period is still going on strong.

ADHD-takki etenee - en onnistunut aloittamaan mitään uutta vaikka hieman mieli tekikin. Työviikko oli aika kamottava - ja lisää seuraa - joten en ole jaksanut saati ehtinyt neuloa kauheasti. Mutta eteneehän tuo pikkuhiljaa. Toisaalta tuntuu hassulta neuloa kashmiria kun kevät kolkuttelee ovella mutta toisaalta ei sitä viitsisi keskenkään jättää. Ja ehtiihän maaliskuussakin vielä olla kylmä.

My ADHD-cardi is progressing, albeit slowly. I've managed to knit only it even though I've been thinking of spring knits lately. My work week was quite horrible - and there's more to come - so I've not had that much energy for knitting. Although it feels a bit funny knitting cashmere when spring is at the door but I do not like to leave it unfinished either. So I think I'll just keep on knitting it for it can be cold in March too.

Korupäivitys - Jewellery update

Koruja on tullut tehtyä hieman vaihtelevalla menestyksellä syksyn aikana ja kun en ole niitä kaikkia esitellyt, niin tässä tulee sitten korupläjäys. (Ja ihan sivuhuomautuksena, päätin valita ne kapeammat raidat).

I've done some bits and pieces of jewellery during the autumn and winter and since I haven't shown them all I thought I'd make an update just for them. (And as a side note, I decided to go with thinner stripes).

Tarjouduin tekemään ystävälle joululahjaksi kaulakorun ja löysin Tampereen messuilta kivoja helmiä: kolikon mallista vihreän, harmaan ja mustan kirjavaa kiveä. Valitettavasti myyjätyttö ei osannut sanoa mitä kiveä ne ovat joten se jää hieman arvoitukseksi. Ostin mukaan myös pieniä mattapintaisia onyx-helmiä mutta en sitten saanut yhdistelmää oikein toimimaan - siitä tuli jotenkin kovin tätimäinen. Päädyin sitten tilailemaan valikoiman erilaisia hopeahelmiä ja sommittelin niistä tämän.

I offered to make a necklace to a friend as a xmas present and I found suitable stone beads at the Tampere fair: these geen-grey-black coin-shaped beads. Unfortunately the girl who was handling the stand didn't know what stone these were so that remains a mystery. I also bought some small round matte onyx beads but I did not manage to get the combination to work and ended up ordering some mixed silver beads and made this.

Kivien välissä on pieniä hopeadonitseja. Jotain käsitystä koosta antanee se, että nuo hopeahelmet ovat noin 8 mm leveitä. Kivien väriä on todella vaikea saada toistumaan oikeana kuvissa, luonnossa väri on jonkin verran vaaleampi kuin mitä sain aikaseksi näistä ja niissä on aika kaunis luonnollinen hieman khakivihreä väri.

There's also some small silver rondelles between the beads. To give some idea of the size, the silver beads are about 8 mm wide. And the colour of the beads was really tricky to get right. In real life they're a bit lighter than in the photos and they have a nice, natural khaki-green colour.

Kokemus opettaa, eli tässäkin olisi pitänyt ostaa pari nauhaa kiviä. Jouduin laittamaan mukaan pari ei-ihan täydellistä kiveä jotta sain tarpeeksi pitkän kaulakorun. Onneksi ne olivat vain hieman karheapintaisia, joten ne eivät kauheasti paista esiin. Laitoin koruun hieman erikoiseman lukon. Harmillisesti en ole saanut tätä annettua vieläkään vaikka joulusta on jo tovi. Olemme olleet vuorotellen sairaina joten tapaamisaikaa on ollut hankala sopia. Mutta, Lotta, tällainen siitä nyt sitten tuli.

I don't have that much practice in jewellery making yet, so I did not realize that I should have bought two strings of beads. So I ended up using a couple of not-so-perfect beads to get long enough necklace. Luckily they were just a bit rough on the surface so they don't stand out from the rest of the string that much. I put a bit decorative clasp on it. Unfortunately I haven't manage to gift my friend with the necklace yet even though it's been a while since xmas. We've been ill in turns so it has been impossible to meet. Hopefully we'll manage it soon though.

Seuraava koru lähti tuunauspohjalta. Ystävälläni oli Barcelonasta ostettu hopea-Mallorcahelmi-rannekoru jonka helmet alkoivat rapistua käytössä jo parin kuukauden jälkeen. Lupasin vaihtaa siihen kivihelmet ja sitten sattuikin koru sopivasti hajoamaan juuri kun hän oli meillä joten koru jäi tänne. Alkuajatus oli käyttää muut korunosat hyväksi ja vaihtaa vain helmet, mutta tarkempi tarkastelu paljasti että hopeaksi luullut osat olivat kaikkea muuta joten en halunnut käyttää niitä. Ja eikö Mallorca-helmien pitäisi olla lasihelmisydämisiä? Nämä olivat kyllä kaikkea muuta - nimittäin muovia.

This next piece started from an existing bracelet a friend of mine got from Barcelona. It was said to be silver with Mallorca beads. The beads had started to show signs of wear after only a couple of months so I offered to change them to stone beads for better wearability. Then one time she was here the bracelet conveniently broke and we moved the project forward. The original plan was to use the rest of the bracelet parts and just change the beads but as I started to put it back together I noticed that the parts that were said to be silver were anything but I didn't want to use them.

Päädyimme vihreään kiveen - New British Columbia jadeen tarkemmin sanottuna (nefriittiä) ja koossa 10 mm. Kivet olivat perussävyltään hieman sammaleenvihreitä ja niitä oli nauhassa hieman eri sävyisiä, tummempia ja vaaleampia. Valitsin rannekoruun suunnilleen samansävyiset yksilöt ja käytin alkuperäisestä rannekorusta kuitenkin hopeanväriset putket, koska ne näyttivät hyviltä eikä niissä näkynyt mitään kulumia tai kuparinvärisiä kohtia. Lievätkö sitten hopeaa vai ei, mutta väliäkö tuolla jos kestävät. Väliin laittelin alkuperäisen pienistä helmihatuista poiketen balin rondelleja ja käytin paksumpaa vaijeria. Rannekorusta tuli näin hieman jäykempi, mutta kestää todennäköisesti kulutusta paremmin.

We ended up using a green stone - New British Columbia jade (nephrite) to be exact in the 10 mm bead size. The stones in the string had a nice moss-green base colour and were a bit different shades - darker and lighter. I chose about same shade beads to the bracelet and ended up using the tubes from the original bracelet for they looked to be ok without any signs of wear or copper colour showing. Who knows, they might even actually be silver. On both sides of the beads I put some silver bali rondelles and used thicker wire than the original had. The bracelet ended up a bit stiffer but it will hopefully withstand wear a bit better.

Koska kiviä oli jäljellä vielä runsaasti ja vihreä ei ole oikein minun värini päätin askarrella hieman lisää. Settiin tuli kaulakoru mustien 6 mm onyx-helmien (jos ne nyt sitä ovat, tai sitten agaattia), 2 mm hopeahelmien ja bali-rondellien kera. Tyylikäs arkikoru, ei liian hienosteleva mutta kuitenkin sopivasti vaihtelevuutta.

Because I had plenty of beads left over and green is not really my colour I decided to make a necklace to go with the bracelet. Here I used black 6 mm onyx beads (or they might actually be agate), 2 mm silver beads and the same bali rondelles as in the bracelet. Not too fancy, suitable for every day wear but not too boring either.

Pyöräytinpä sitten settiin sopivat korvakorutkin hieman myöhemmin. Ja mikä parasta, olen nähnyt kaikki käytössä. Mukava tehdä lahjaksi kun sattuu sopimaan hyvin vastaanottajan makuun ja tyyliin.

A bit afterwards I decided to make a pair of earrings to go with the set too. And what's best, I've seen all of them being worn. I like making gifts when I manage to make something that matches the style and taste of the receiver.

ADHD

Olen alkanut epäillä että minulla on neule-ADHD, sillä viime viikon perjantaina aloitin innolla tätä. Neuloin sitä myös lauantaina kunnes koin "ooh, kiiltävä"-hetken ja aloitin jotain toista. Onkohan tuolle tautiluokitusta? Saako siihen kuntoutusta? Jos jaksat neuloa 30 cm leveän ja 2 m pitkän ribbikaulaliinan 2 mm puikoilla tekemättä välissä mitään muuta olet parantunut?

I'm starting to suspect I have knit-ADHD for last week on Friday I started this. I knit it also on Saturday until I got an "ooh, shiny"-moment and started something else. Is there a classification for it? Can I get rehabilitation? If you can knit rib scarf 30 cm wide and 2 m long on 2 mm needles without doing anything else at the same time you're cured?

Toisaalta syytän kaikesta pakkasta, koska ylläolevat soirot ja nämä pussissa olevat ovat ohutta kashmiria paksuudeltaan 2/28 nm. Neulon niitä kolminkertaisena ja 3 mm puikoilla. Seuraavaksi pitää ratkaista yksi kysymys: ohuita vai leveitä raitoja?

Though my excuse is the freezing weather and I'm sticking to it for the long things in the first photo and the ones in the above photo are thin cashmir, 2/28 nm. I'm knitting it tripled on 3 mm needles. Now the question is: thin or thick stripes?

Yksi sormus - One ring

Tässä se nyt sitten on, kahden ja puolen kerran sormus, killoitettuna kotelossaan. Siitä sitten tuli ihan "plain and simple" lähinnä sen vuoksi että aika loppui kesken. Hieman huolestuttaa että onko se hieman...tylsä, vai pitäiskö vaan röyhistellä rintaa ja todeta että se on klassinen ja elegantti.

Here it is, my two-and-half times ring all polished and pretty in its case. It came out all "plain and simple" mainly due to time constraints. I'm a bit worried that it is a bit...dull, or should I just be pleased with myself and announce that it is classic and elegant.

Pikkusievä se ei todellakaan ole, mikä tyyliini sopiikin. Tehty tukevasta 2 mm hopealevystä ja leveyttä sillä on noin 7 mm. Tyyliltään ihan litteä, kulmikkailla reunoilla - sellainen putkenpätkä siis. Ei kyllä mikään paha ensimmäiseksi sormukseksi.

It's certainly not cute and ladylike, which suits me just fine. It's made out of 2 mm thick silver and the width is about 7 mm. The style is simple, flat, kid of like a piece of pipe, really. Not a bad job as a first ring.

Värikästä lauantaita - It's a colourful Saturday

Mies tuli maanantaina työmatkalta, oli kotona jo minun tullessa töistä. Jälleennäkeminen oli herkkä - menin vatsavaivoissani makaamaan ja vietinkin loppuillan sohvalla kääriytyneenä vilttiin ja välillä oksennellen. Vatsatauti siis iski.

Sain kivoja tuliaisiakin tosin niistä nauttiminen jäi loppuviikkoon. Amerikanmaalla kun tuo ystävänpäivä on ihan erilainen spektaakkeli niin sain pari kauniisti koristeltua suklaarasiaa. Godivaa ja jotain paikallisia herkkuja.

The hubby came home from a business trip on Monday, he was at home when I got home from work. The reunion was sweet and tender - I got off to bed with a queasy stomach and spent the rest of the night on the sofa wrapped up in a blanket leaving only to go the bathroom to empty my stomach. Yes, I caught a stomach bug.

I got some nice souvenirs too but it took me to the end of the week to be able to properly enjoy them. Since the valentine's day is more of a deal in the States than here, the shops were filled with heart-shaped thingies and such. I got two nicely decorated chocolate boxes, one filled with Godiva goodies, the other with local truffles.

Sain myös parit kunnon bling-kynsilakat, Deborah Lippmannia väreissä Across the Universe ja Today Was A Fairytale. Lankaa en tällä kertaa tilannut hotellille kun lumiolosuhteet arveluttivat. Eipä silti että se lanka täältä ihan heti loppuisikaan.

I also got a few bling nail polishes from Deborah Lippmann: Across the Universe and Today Was A Fairytale. This time I did not order any yarn to the hotel for I was not sure how the snow situation affected the post. Not that I'm out to run out of yarn in a near future.

Kun taudin pahin vaihe oli ohi mutta en ollut vielä täydessä terässä ei oikein tehnyt mieli neuloakaan. Sen sijaan viimeistelin hitaasti paria keskeneräistä neulekonevillatakkia. Toinen niistä on se omituisen värinen pikkutakki jonka esittelin aiemmassa postauksessa (tämä). Siinä on nyt molemmat hihat, nappilistan puolikas ja pääntien reunusta kiinni. Toinen on tämä epämääräisen oloinen loimi. Se ei näytä roikkumassa ollessaan kyllä paljon miltään ja kuvaaminenkin oli hieman hankalaa. Kyseessä on kuitenkin pitkä merino-tencel takki kolmessa värissä: vedensininen, mariini ja violetti. Se on jokaneulan ribbiä ja kiinnittelin siihen etukaitaletta ja hihoja. Hihapyöriöitä pitää luultavasti hieman purkaa, koska pyöriö pussittaa omituisesti olkapään kohdalta. Muuten tilanne näyttää ihan hyvältä sen suhteen että saisin sen päälle kohta. Polviin ulottuva lämmin neuletakki tällä ilmalla olisi ihan passeli. Ja toivottavasti saan parempia kuviakin aikaiseksi.

After I was over the worst phase of the stomach bug but not up to full capacity yet I did not feel much like knitting. Instead I seamed some pieces together of these two machine knit cardies I'm making. The one being the odd-coloured thing I showed in a previous post (this) which now has both sleeves, one half of a button band and part of neck band sewn on. The other one is this slinky thing I photographed hanging. It does not look much and it was really hard to photograph. It is every needle rib, in three colours of merino-tencel: aqua, navy and purple. It now has one sleeve attached to it too. I probably have to rip a part of the sleeve cap for it is a bit too long and makes a weird bump on the shoulder region. But I hope to get it finished soon so that I can wear it. Long, woolly cardigan sounds just the thing in this weather. And hopefully I get some better photos too.

Parisen vuotta sitten tilasin Kathryn Alexanderilta custom-värjäyksen Color on Color-huivia varten. En sitten heti päässyt huivin neulomisen kimppuun ja se sitten jäikin. Nyt kaivoin kaikki pikku lankakerät taas esiin ja pistin puikoille.

En nyt tiedä minkälaista se ohjeen alkuperäislanka on (Paternayan Persian), mutta minun lankani eivät ole sitä vaan jotain yksikierteistä ohuehkoa villalankaa. Yksinkertaisena en sillä saanut mitenkään haluttua tiheyttä (17 s ja 23 krs = 10x10 cm 3.75 millin puikoilla) joten päädyinkin neulomaan sitä kaksinkertaisena - tiedä sitten oliko se tarkoitus vai ei. Saan tästä 4 mm puikoilla nyt suunnilleen haluttua tiheyttä joten pysyn siinä. Koska tämä ei ole varsinainen kitti, ei lankoja siis ole mitenkään numeroitu saati sitten paritettu ohjeen kanssa. Pistelen värit siis haluamaani järjestykseen ja olen jo muutenkin hiukan soveltanut ohjetta. En nimittäin ymmärrä miksi siinä pitää olla niin paljon sileää nurjaa (reverse stockinette) ja korvaankin osan ainaoikealla. Lisäksi olen jo joutunut hieman soveltamaan raitojen leveyttä kun väri ei ole aina ihan riittänyt. Mutta, eipä tuo minua häiritse. Hauskaa tuo pienien vyyhtien kanssa puuhaaminen on vielä ainakin ollut. Tässä eilisillan saldo.

A couple of years ago I ordered a custom-dye from Kathryn Alexander from Color on Color scarf. I did not have the possibility to start knitting on it right away and then I somehow just didn't. But now I took out all the small skeins and started knitting.

I don't know what the original yarn is like (Paternayan Persian) but the yarn I have is single-ply thin wool. I had no chance of getting the gauge (17 sts, 23 rows = 10 cm on 3.75 mm needles) with it single so I'm using it double and with 4 mm needles. That brings me about gauge and the resulting fabric is not too loose so I'm sticking to it. And since this is not actually a kit, the yarns are in no way numbered nor are they attached to the pattern in any way. So I am choosing the colours as I knit and how I see fit. I've also already modified the pattern for I do not see the point of that much reverse stockinette and I'm replacing part of it with garter stitch. But that is just how I am and I'm not too bothered by it. So far it has been quite fun knitting with the small skeins and choosing the colour combinations. This is what I made in couple of hours last night.

Saappaita hyvinkehittyneille pohkeille - Boots for the well developed calves

Pitäisin mielelläni hameita myös talvisin, mutta kun en oikein omista pitkiä hameita, niin saappaat olisivat kivat. Mutta kun omaa hyvinkehittyneen pohkeen eikä ole muutenkaan sitä ihan pienintä kokoa, niin saappaiden löytäminen on aina ollut vaikeaa. Yhdet hieman pidemmät joskus oli, mutta sitten innostuin spinningistä ja kah, pohkeet kasvoivat niistä ulos.

Mutta jo jokin aika sitten löysin kenkäkaupan Englanninmaalta, nimeltä Duo Boots. Kenkien tilaaminen netistä sovittamatta arvelutti. Mutta sitten heille tuli ale ja noin kolmisen viikkoa sitten pistin tilauksen menemään. Tilaus lähti perjantaina ja samana päivänä lähtivät saappaat liikkeelle. Maanantaiaamuna oli paketti jo perillä - todella nopeaa toimintaa.

I would like to wear skirts on winter too but I don't own long skirts - nor do I really feel comfortable in them - so the only choise is to get some boots. But, since my calves are quite well developed finding a pair of boots that fit has always been a pain. I used to own a pair that was bit taller than normal, but then I got into spinning (the excercise, not the fiber kind) and I grew out of them.

A while ago I came across this shoe shop in the UK, called Duo Boots. But ordering boots online without trying them on gave me a pause. But, they had a sale and about three weeks ago I put in an order. That was a Friday and the boots left UK the same day and arrived here on Monday morning. Quite a fast delivery, I'd say.

Ja poseerauskuva hameen kanssa. Malli on Tilia, ratsastussaapas 3.5 cm korolla. Tilasin saappaat kokoa 40, 39 cm pohkeenympäryksellä ja koko on aika passeli. Ympärysmitasta olisi varmaan mennyt myös se pienempi koko, 37 cm, koska mallissa on yläreunassa venykkeet mutta hyvä näinkin. Ja saappaissa on myös kunnolla vartta niinkun näkyy.

Here's a posing photo with a skirt. The model is Tilia, I ordered them in size 40 with 39 cm calf and they fit quite nicely. I think I could have ordered a size smaller, 37 cm, on the calf since this model has a stretchy bit on the top. But they feel quite as is. And I like the length of them very much.

Ja saappaissa on vielä pinkki nahkavuori, söpöä. Harmikseni en ole vielä voinut käyttää kenkiä koska suunnilleen heti kun sain ne tuli suoja ja loska - ja eihän uusia saappaita viitsi sellaisella ilmalla laittaa jalkaan. Sen jälkeen tulikin sitten kylmä ja pakkanen, ja en minä nyt sentään tällaisella ilmalla hametta halua laittaa, villahousut ennemmin.

The boots have a pink leather lining, cute. Though I haven't been able to take my boots out for a spin for after I got them the weather turned warm and slushy and I didn't want to wear my new boot on that dirty weather. Then we got snow and cold and now it is too cold for me to wear a skirt. I'd rather wear many woolly layers.

Vaikka itse tilaaminen olikin helppoa ja saappaat saapuivat hujauksessa, itse tilauksen aikaansaaminen aiheutti päänvaivaa. Ihastuin sellaisiin biker-tyylisiin saappaisiin mutta kun lopulta sain tilauksen aikaiseksi ne olivat loppu minulle sopivissa koossa.

Pohkeen ympäryksen valinta oli se päänvaivaa aiheuttava asia, koska en oikein osannut arpoa sopivaa kokoa. Kaupan mittausohjeiden mukaan - pohje mitataan jalka 90 asteen kulmassa jalkapohja lattiassa - pohkeenympärykseni oli noin 42-43 cm. Luku tuntui kovin suurelta vertailtuani sitä puolisääreen ulottuviin saappaisiini mikä aiheutti vain päänsärkyä.

Suoritettuani hieman vertailevaa tutkimusta kenkäkaupassa päädyin lopulta tuohon 39 cm lukemaan mikä tuntuukin aika hyvältä. Nyt kun tuo saapasmuoti näyttää olevan sellainen jossa saappaat vedetään housujen päälle ovat saappaat hieman löysempiä varrestaan ja jotenkin sopivia kokoja löytyy myös kaupasta. Niinpä minullakin on nyt peräti kaksi paria saappaita, toiset korolla ja toiset ilman. Woo, valinnanvaraa!

Although the ordering itself was easy and the delivery was fast the content of the order was more difficult. I had my eye on a pair of biker-style boots but when I finally decided to make the order they were out of stock in my size.

The thing that caused me trouble was the calf width. The way the shop tells to measure the calf - leg bent at 90 degree angle with foot flat on the floor - gave me size 42-43 for the calf. But it felt a bit too big when I compared it to this pair of mid-calf boots that I have.

After some comparative research done at some shoe shops I decided on the 39 cm size which seems quite perfect. The boot fashion these days seems to favour boots over jeans so the boot legs seem to be a bit wider than before and it is possible to find more or less fitting boots at local shops too. So now I have two pairs of boots, one with higher heels. Woo, choise!

On se pyöreä sittenkin - Yes, it is round after all

Jatkoin maanantaina taas sormuksen työstämistä - jos sitä mustaa soikiota nyt sormukseksi voi kutsua. Ensimmäiseksi se meni happokylpyyn ja tuli ulos hieman paremman värisenä. Ei tuota vieläkään hopeaksi tunnista, mutta onhan se sentään vaaleampi. Sauma näkyy tässä vielä hyvin ja ensimmäisenä viilasinkin saumasta juotosjämät pois.

I continued working on my ring last Monday, if you could call the black oval thing a ring. The evening started with an acid bath after which it looked like this. It still doesn't look much like silver but at least it is cleaner. The seam is clearly visible here and the first thing I did was file away the solder remnants.

Sitten hieman vasarointia, sivujen tasaus ja viilailua. Nyt se näyttää enemmän sormukselta jo.

Then some hammering, filing the edges and top and it starts to look more like a ring.

Viilailun ja hionnan jälkeen seurasi kiilloitus. Ja kyllä, kyllä siitä sormus tulee - vaikka leimansijoitteluni ei ihan täydellistä olekaan. Sivut eivät oikein kiillottuneet joten hioin niitä hieman lisää. Ensi kerralla seuraa lisää killoittelua ja sitten - jotain. Koska minulta jäi kaksi kertaa väliin, en oikein ehdi toteuttamaan ensimmäistä ideaani. Nyt pitää vain miettiä teenkö jotain koristeluja sormukseen vai jätänkö sen vain sileäksi ja kiiltäväksi. Toisaalta tuollainen sileä, kiiltävä paksu sormus kiehtoo yksinkertaisuudellaan, toisaalta siihen voisi tehdä jotain pientä, kunhan keksisi vain mitä.

Sormuksesta on tulossa aika muhkea, 2 mm paksu ja 7 mm leveä. Ihan kunnon kamaa siis, mutta en yleensäkään oikein pidä mistään pikkusievästä.

After filing it was time for polishing. And yes, it will be a ring, after all - even though my metal stamping skills need some improvement. I had trouble getting the sides to shine nicely, so I had to file them a bit more. Next time it's more polishing and then - something. Since it is the last time (I missed two classes) I won't have time to do what I had originally planned but I think I might have time to do some decorations if I can think of what to do. On the one hand I like the simplicity of a thick, heavy, shiny ring but on the other hand it would be nice to decorate it with something.

The ring is quite massive, I used 2 mm silver plate and the width of the ring is 7 mm. But I've never been a fan on small, dainty things.

Kaunotar ja hirviö - The beauty and the beast

Aamulla oli kaunista ja harmittelin kun piti kuvata kännykällä, siinä kun ei niin hyvää kameraa kuitenkaan ole. Pitänee ruveta taas kantamaan digipokkaria kassissa.

Today when I left for work it was really beautiful and I was a bit disappointed I only had my cell phone camera for it is not that good. I have to start carrying my digital camera around in my bag again.

Pääsin jonosta sormuskurssille mukaan, mutta viiden kerran kurssi alkoi huonosti kun ensin olin taudissa ja sitten vaivasivat työt. Mutta tänään pääsin mukaan ja sain tehtyä jo jotakin. Tässä mäiskitty ja pahoinpidelty sormuksenrunko odottaa juottamista.

I was in a waiting list and managed to get a place in a ring-making class. The class has five sessions but mine started badly: first I had the cold and then work happened. But I managed to get there today and got something done. Here the abused start of a ring is waiting to be soldered.

Tässä se on juottamisen jälkeen kaikessa komeudessaan, mustana ja epämääräisen muotoisena. Eipä tuota uskoisi hopeaksi jollei tietäisi. Ensi kerralla siitä toivottavasti tulee jo enemmän sormuksen oloinen.

Here it is after soldering all black and out of shape. You would not believe it was silver by the look of it. Next time I hope to make it a bit more ring-like and shinier.

Päivitystä - Updating

Jouluflunssan jälkeen taisin olla terveenä peräti viikon, sitten iski toinen Tauti. Tällä kertaa oikeaan aikaan aloitettu Duact-kuuri lievitti nuhanenävaihetta selvästi, mutta kuumetta oli ihan riittävästi. Ja yleistä plääh-oloa myös.

Jossain flunssien lomassa ja välissä tein vanhoista mallitilkuista nukenpeittoja. Käytin pääasiassa siis vanhoja mallitilkkuja, joko omia kokeiluja tai Ullan lanka-arvosteluja varten tehtyjä. Täytepaloja jouduin tekemään molempiin, vaaleampaan enemmän. Ihan kivoja noista tuli, toivottavasti kelpaavat vastaanottajallekin. Kunhan saan ne joskus annettua - taudit ovat estäneet tapaamisia vähän turhankin hyvin.

After my xmas flu I managed to stay healthy about a week or so before I got a new Disease. Loathsome things, colds. Luckily this time I started some allergy pills as soon as I got a few sniffles so those kept the runny nose at bay - though they did nothing for the fever. Or the general feeling of blah.

At some point between and during the colds I managed to make these two doll blankets from mainly old swatches. Some of them were for my own knits but most of them were for yarn reviews for Ulla. I managed to get by mostly using just swatches but I had to make a few new ones to fill in the holes. More for the lighter blanket on top. I just hope the recipient likes them, if I ever get to give them to her that is. We've been trying to visit them but there has been too much illness on both sides so far.

Neulekonekurssi alkoi taas ja takana on jo kolme kertaa. Olen saanut syksyllä aloittamani neuletakin jo tähän vaiheeseen. Hihatkin ovat olemassa ja niiden saumat on ommeltu, en vaan ole vielä kiinnittänyt niitä vartaloon kun aion tehdä nappilistat ensin. Hassusti jotenkin tuntuu että etukappaleet ovat yhdessä kapemmat kuin takakappale, vaikka kaikki säädöt ja silmukkaluvut ovat kohdallaan. Nappilistasta en tiedä vielä yhtään millaisen teen, ehkä sileää kaksinkertaisen. Koristeluksi takkiin aion tehdä i-cordia ja värjään sen vielä lopuksi hieman omemmaksi.

Lanka on jotain ebaystä halvalla ostamaani kashmir/angora/puuvilla-sekoitusta ja väri on outo harmaanvaaleanpunertavanlila, jota kai kuvailtiin sanalla sieni ilmoituksessa. Kuitujen määrästä ei ole mitään havaintoa, mutta luulen sen olevan enimmäkseen puuvillaa. Se on aika löyhäkierteistä ja valmiista paloista näyttikin tulevan hieman vinoja. En nyt anna sen kuitenkaan kauheasti häiritä, kun lanka tuntuu muuten kivalta. Tulossa on siis 3/4-hihainen pikkuneuletakki jonka voi heittää lämmittämään vaikka kesämekon päälle.

The machine knitting class has started again and we've had three classes already. In the autumn I started this small cardi and now its in this stage. I have finished the sleeves too and sewn the side seams but I will do the button band first before I attach them to the body. I do not yet know what kind of button band I'll do, maybe stockinette doubled. We'll see. And I'm going to make some i-cord and use it to make some decorations on the cardi. Funnily enough it seems as though the front pieces together are narrower than the back even though I had the same settings and everything.

The yarn I used was some cashmere/angora/cotton -mix I got cheap from ebay. I have no idea what percentages there are of each but I guess its mainly cotton. It fluffs up nicely when washed and gets really soft. It is 2-ply but very loosely plied which is why the pieces tend to have a bit of a bias but I won't let that bother me too much. The colour is sort of odd greyish-pinkish-lilac and was described as mushroom in the ad. I will dye it to a more "me"-colour after I've finished it. So, this will be a short, small cardi to throw over a dress when it gets chilly in the summer.

Olen hitaasti mutta varmasti tikutellut ylhäältä aloitettavaa raglanpaitaa Jaegerin Wool Stretch-langasta. Aloitin siitä jo joskus syksyllä ribbipaitaa, mutta purin sen kun se ei ollut kiva. Marraskuussa aloittelin uudestaan ja nyt olen päässyt purkamatta jo loppuun. Helmajoustin tuntuu kippaavan hieman ylöspäin joten mietin pitäisikö siihen tehdä hieman lisää kerroksia.

I've slowly but surely knit top-down raglan using Jaeger's Wool Stretch. I started a ribbed pullover from it sometime in the autumn but I ripped it because it just wasn't good. Then I started this version in November and managed to get to the end without ripping. The hem rib seems to flip up a bit so maybe I should add some rows to it.

Kaulus oli vielä tässä vaiheessa aamusella. Nyt siinä on jokunen rivi joustinta kauluksena ja lisää tulee vielä. Kyseessä on siis ihan perusraglan sileää neuletta joustinneulereunuksilla. Jännitysmomentin tähän tuo lanka kun sen pitäisi kuulemma kutistua noin 10% pituudesta pesussa. Olen siis yrittänyt neuloa hieman liian pitkää mutta saa nähdä miten hyvin onnistuin. Oletan että se ei leveydestä niin paljoa kutistu, ainakaan mallitilkku ei sitä tehnyt mutta niistä ei aina tiedä.

The neck was at this stage in the morning. Now it has some ribbing around it and it will get some rows more. What we are talking here is your basic top-down raglan in stockinette stitch with ribbed edges. The only adventurous thing here is the yarn for it is said to shrink 10% in length after washing. So I've been trying to make it a bit too long in every which way. I hope it will not shrink that much in width. The swatch didn't but we all know we can't trust them that much.

No ei ihan - Not quite

Sarjassamme "Ei näin" esitellään kietaisuneule lehdestä Moda 5/2010 (löytyy myös täältä, ensimmäinen kuva pdf). Neule on nyt valmis, paitsi hihojen kiinnitys ja lankojen päättely puuttuu. Nopeasti tarkasteltuna kaikki näyttää olevan kunnossa.

On our series of "Not like this" we'll be showing a wraparound cardi from Moda 05/2010 (also found on Austermann site, the first photo: pdf). I've done all except attach sleeves and weave in yarn ends. A quick look - everything seems fine.

Lähempi tarkastelu kuitenkin paljastaa että hiha-aukot ovat aika järkyn kokoiset ja kietaisuosaakin on riittävästi. "Korosta vyötäröäsi" sanoo Moda - joopa joo.

A closer look reveals that the sleeve holes are enormous and there's more than enough of the wrap-around part. "Enhance your waist" says Moda - yeah, right.

Nämä lärpäkkeet pitäisi jotenkin saada kiedottua kätevästi ristikkäin toistensa ympäri, kun tässä mallissa ei ole sitä normaalia reikä ja nauha -systeemiä. Olkapäilläkään ei ole mitään muotoilua vaan kappale on suora pätkä missä on vain reiät hihoja varten. Ja kyllä, aika pitkältähän tuo myös selän puolelta näyttää.

These flaps are supposed to be crossed on the front and wrapped around for there is no usual hole and tie-system. The piece is basically flat one with holes for the sleeves - no shaping at the shoulders. And yes, it is quite long at the back.

Hahhaa, sanon minä. Ennemminkin piiloita vyötärösi massiivisiin mohairmakkaroihin. Tämä menee kyllä suoraan sarjaan "Ei näin, ei todellakaan näin". Pääsen purkamaan mohairia, kivaa!

Hah, I say. More like hide what ever waist you have under massive rolls of mohair. This goes straight into "Not like this, not even close"-category. I get to rip mohair, joy!

Viimeinen ja ensimmäinen - Last and first

Vuoden viimeinen neuletyö valmistui juuri uudenvuoden aattona. Kyseessä on jo hieman, no, hyvin kypsynyt neuletyö, kietaisutakki Rosemoor, jonka sain lähes valmiiksi jo vuonna 2008. Tein vartalo-osan koneella (paitsi hihansuiden palmikonkierrot) ja nikuttelin sitten reunan palmikkokaitaleen käsin. Senkin sain tehtyä jo keväällä 2009 ja uupumaan jäi enää lankojen päättelyt ja kietaisunauhat. Lankahan oli tässä vaiheessa jo loppu, mallitilkutkin käytetty ja lisää ei enää saanut - sen siitä saa kun tykkää haalia lopetettuja lankoja varastoon. Sovituksessa ilmeni kuitenkin että olin ommellut palmikkokaitaleen liian löysästi takin toiseen puoleen eikä purkaminen innostanut. Viime viikolla otin kuitenkin sakset käteen, ratkoin ja ompelin kaitaleen paremmin paikalleen.

The last knit of 2010 was finished on New Year's Eve. Though it is a well matured knit, wrap-around cardi Rosemoor, that I started and almost finished on the spring of 2008. I did most of the body part by hand (except the cables on the sleeves) and then I knit the cable detail on the edge by hand. Even that was finished on the spring of 2009 and what was missing was some weaving in of yarn ends and the ties. At this point I was all out of yarn, I had even used the swatches and all. No more yarn was to be had - that is what I get for liking discontinued yarns. When I was trying the cardi on I noticed I had sewn the cable insert on too loosely on the other side of the neck and I did not feel like re-doing it. Finally, last week I got it done.

Kaitaletta oli sen verran liikaa että siitä langasta sain tehtyä kaksi icord-nauhaa sitomisnauhoiksi etureunaan. Toinen vaihtoehto oli laittaa sametti- tai satiininauhaa kietaisunauhoiksi, mutta kokeilen nyt tätä ensin.

I knit so much extra that with the yarn I ripped from the cable stripe I was able to make two icords for ties. I had thought to use velvet or satin cord as ties but I'll try these first.

Vastapuolelle laitoin sitten ohutta samettinauhaa. Jos tämä ratkaisu ei tunnu hyvältä, laitan sitten pidemmät, ympärille riittävät nauhat jostakin muusta. Mutta nyt on ainakin vuosikertaneule valmis, vihdoinkin. Lanka tuntuu kasteluista huolimatta hieman karkealle ja hieman mietittää miten kaula tuota kestää. Lanka on siis Jaegerin Luxury Tweediä, 35 % alpakkaa ja loput villaa. Väri on Imperial, jossa on lila ja tummansininen säie yhdessä. Tähän meni kaikki 10 kerää mitä minulla tuota väriä oli.

On the opposite side I put thin velvet ties. If I don't like this solution I'll change the ties for something longer that I can wrap around me, velvet or satin most likely. But at least I've finished one of my ufo's, finally. The yarn softened quite a bit after I blocked it but it still feels somewhat scratchy and I'm wondering how my sensitive neck will deal with it. The yarn is Jaeger Luxury Tweed that is 35% alpaca and 65% wool - the colour I used is called Imperial, lilac and really dark blue together. I used 10 skeins on this one, all that I had.

Vuoden ensimmäinen valmistunut neule valmistui sitten 1.1. Se ei sentään ollut niin marinoitunut, vaikka viime vuoden puolella aloitinkin sen. Taas tylsä huivi jokaneulan ribbiä. Colourmartin ohutta merinosilkkiä, ( 30/70% 2/48 nm), kaksinkertaisena, värin nimi on nancino magenta. Väri on ennemminkin kirsikka kuin magenta, mielestäni ja jotain näiden kahden kuvan väliltä.

The first knit of this year I finished on 1st of January. It's not that well matured as the cardi, I started this last year. Yet another boring machine knit every needle rib scarf. The yarn is thin, 2/48, merino-silk (70/30) from Colourmart, doubled. The colour is called nancino magenta but I think it is more cherry than magenta. The real colour is something between the two photos here.

Tein huivin siis omalla koneellani eikä siitä tullut ihan virheetöntä. Huomasin vasta jo neuloessa että yksi alatason neuloista oli hieman vääntynyt ja kaksinkertaisen langan kanssa oli jotenkin hankalaa ja toinen langoista jäi välillä neulalle lenkiksi. Onneksi pinnasta eivät virheet kovin helposti näy - kuvassa oleva raita on kuivumisjälki. Lanka pörhööntyi yllättävän vähän pesussa mutta aukeni kuitenkin hieman. Halusin kunnon huivin ja tälle kertyikin mittaa leveydessä hieman päälle 40 cm ja pituutta noin 220. Lankaa jäi kahdesta kartiosta hieman jäljelle mutta päätin olla neulomatta lankaa ihan loppuun, kun jäljelle jääneistä n. 30 grammasta olisi riittänyt kuitenkin yllättävän pitkälle. Nytkin huivin saa hyvin kiedottua pään ympärille ja päät ovat riittävän pitkät. Mietin että pitäisikö tätä koristella jotenkin, mutta yksinkertaisuus on kuitenkin kaunista.

I made this with my own machine and it did not turn out quite perfect. I only noticed after I had knit a bit that one of the needles on the lower bed was twisted and did not knit always nicely. Also I had some trouble with the doubled yarn and sometimes the other strand was left on the needle and got snagged. Luckily the knit is quite forgiving and the mistakes are hardly visible - the stripes seen on the photo are from where I hanged it to dry. The yarn didn't fluff up that much in the wash but the fabric softened somewhat. My aim was to make a big scarf and that is what I got. The length is about 220 cm and the width is a bit over 40. So big enough to wrap around the head and still leave enough over. I have some yarn left but I decided not to use it all up for the scarf is long enough as it is and 30 grams of thin yarn carries quite far. I wondered whether to decorate it somehow but I like the simplicity of it.

So this is how the old knit year ended and a new began. And we still don't have a new wall calendar!
