Seuraava päivä - The day after

Synttärit on nyt juhlittu (joo, domppaa se oli). Eilen käytiin syömässä Postres-ravintolassa. Ruoka oli hyvää ja sitä oli riittävästi (vaikka annokset olivatkin aika pieniä), suosittelen. Mutta kannattaa varautua viettämään noin neljä tuntia ruoan äärellä. Niin teki naapuripöytäkin vaikka he tilasivat pienemmän menun.

Birthday celebrations are over (yeah, it was Dom Perignon). Yesterday we went to restaurant Postres. The food was good and there was enough of it (even though the dishes were quite small), I recommend. But be prepared to spend about four hours at the table. So did the neighbouring group also even though they ordered a shorter menu.

Tänään olen sitten neulonut koneella (ja tuskaillut alatason kanssa), urheillut ja värjännyt lankaa. Kaivoin KoolAid paketit kätköistä, kaksi kerää Novitan alpakkaa perusharmaana ja rupesin töihin. Arpa lankesi kirsikkamaulle ja siihen pääsivät kerät lillumaan. Käytin vain yhden paketin kahta kerää kohti (á 50g), keittelin niitä kattilassa, pesin shampoolla ja huuhtelin useasti ja laitoin viimeiseen huuhteluveteen etikkaa. Tuloksena viininpunaista lankaa. Alla on kaksi kuvaa hieman eri kulmasta, oikea väri on jotain tuolta väliltä. En nyt tiedä pitäisikö lankoja värjätä vielä toisen kerran jotta väristä saisi syvempää vai jättääkö homma nyt jo tähän.

Today I have knitted with the machine (and cursed the ribber), been very sporty and dyed some yarn. I took two balls of Novita alpaca (100% alpaca), a bag of Cherry KoolAid, a pot and got going. I used only one package for the two balls (one 50g), did the dyeing in a pot and washed with shampoo, rinsed sufficiently and used vinegar in the last rinse. I ended up with this nice heathery bordeaux red. There's two colours above, the final colour is somewhere in between the two. I'm not sure whether I should repeat everything with another bag so as to get a deeper colour or should I just leave it as it is.

Synttäripäivää - Birthday

Ensimmäiseksi: onnea minulle! Taas ollaan yksi vuosi vanhempia (tai no, virallinen aika on vasta 16:05). Shamppanjaa ei nyt tässä blogissa tänään valitettavasti tarjoilla, se juotiin jo eilen. Ja olipa kauheeta ökyshamppanjaa, en varmaan ikinä ole mitään noin kallista juonut (mutta juon ainakin toiste koska sitä on kaapissa vielä yksi pullo). Hannu osti synttäreitten kunniaksi...nyt minulla on sitten kiva vihreä laatikko jossa on pullonmuotoinen kolo. Mutta, ottakaa kunniakseni valinnainen juoma, olkaa hyvät!

First: happy birthday to me! Yet another year older (well, the official time is 4:05 pm). There won't be any champagne on offer in this blog today, it was drunk yesterday. And what a posh champagne it was, I don't think I've ever drunk one so expensive (but I will again since we have another bottle in store). Hannu bought it to celebrate my birthday...and now I have a nice green box with a bottle-shaped enclosure inside. But, do enjoy a drink of your choise in my honour, if you feel so inclined.

Ja koska en oikein osannut tehdä mitään (vielä päättämätön edellisen postauksen asioista), aloitin siis jotain uutta. Tulossa Kissa II. Tästä on tulossa selvästi isompi kuin edellisestä ja jo nyt huolestuttaa että olisikohan sittenkin pitänyt ostaa toinenkin kerä Suvia nykyisen pariksi. Lankaa kun on nyt jo mennyt ihan tuntuvasti.

And since I didn't know what to do (still undecided about last post's issues) I started something new. Coming soon to a blog near you: Cat II. This is going to be a lot bigger than the previous one, the yarn is thicker. And I'm starting to wonder if I have enough yarn already since it feels like even this has taken up a lot of yarn.

Lopuksi synttärilahja. Hannu toteutti jälleen suosikkimetodiaan: "kun et keksi muuta, mene Kalevala koruun" (ja jostain syystä nettisivut eivät mainitse näitä koruja, Crystal rock, ollenkaan). Mikä onkin toiminut yleensä hyvin, ja niin nytkin. Sain ihkun kesärannekorun, punaisen (totta kai!). Siinä on söpöjä lasihelmiä joissa on kukkasia. Kiva!

Here's my birthday present. Hannu did what he often does: "when in doubt, go to Kalevala koru" (and for some reason these are not on their web pages, Crystal Rock). It has worked fine previously and so it did this time also. I got a lovely bracelet (red, of course!). It has cute glass beads with flowers in them. Nice!

Villasia ajatuksia - Wolly thoughts

Olipa aika rapsakat 15 astetta tänään aamulla puoli kahdeksan aikaan kun bussille kävelin. Ja arvatkaa oliko minulla takkia? No ei tietenkään...luonnollinen seuraus moiselle palelemiselle oli että ajatukset kääntyivät villaneuleiden puoleen. Tämä toi mieleen parikin neuletta joille voisi tehdä jotain. Rogue - vielä hihapuoli yksilö (ja vartalo- ja huppupuolikin) äkkiähän se tuosta sutaisee valmiiksi. Dibs on ribs (kuva tuolla, kelaa vain sivun loppuun)- molemmat alapuolet tehty mutta siihen se sitten jäikin.

It was quite crispy 15C this morning around half past seven when I was walking to the bus stop. And guess if I had a coat on? Of course not...and the natural consequence of such coldness was that my thoughts turned to woolly sweaters. This brought to mind a couple of knits I could do something with. Rogue - still without the other sleeve (and the body and the hood), quick knit to finish. Dibs on ribs (picture there, just go to the end of the page) - both lower pieces done but that was where I left off.

Ja tuo toinen neule onkin se mikä askarruttaa mieltä nyt eniten.

Siis, kerrataanpa vaiheet lyhyesti:

osa 1: Noro Silk Garden - tein yhden alaosan ja totesin että tulee hiukka lyhyt. Enpä muuten vieläkään ole tainnut purkaa tuota kappaletta.

osa2: SWTC Karaoke - molemmat alakappaleet tehty. Mutta eipä tuo tehty pala kauhean leveämmältä näytä kuin edellinenkään, tietysti kastelu ja muotoilu voisi tuoda muutosta asiaan.

And the other knit is what has been bugging me the most. So, let's go over the history shortly:

part 1: Noro Silk Garden - I finished one lower piece and and decided it was going to be a bit short. Still haven't ripped that one out, now that I think about it.

part2: SWTC Karaoke - both lower pieces done. But it does not look much higher than the silk garden one, of course a bit of blocking might change that.

Joten, mitä tehdä? Kun olen katsellut netistä ihmisten tekemiä puseroita niin en ole ihan varma enää että onko tuo niin hyvä malli. IK:n kuvassa näyttää että se vaakasuora osuus tulisi juuri noin rintojen kohdalle. Ja onko se nyt todellakaan kauhean mairitteleva paikka katkokselle? Yksi vaihtoehto olisi muokata ohjetta niin, että katkoskohta tulee rintojen alapuolelle (eli tehdä yläosasta hiukan pidempi). Tai sitten voisi purkaa koko homman ja tehdä jotain muuta (mitä?).

Siis, vaihtoehtoja:

1. Ompelen alakappaleet yhteen ja neulon puutuvat palat niihin, kastelen ja katson mitä tapahtuu. Ja jos näyttää hyvältä niin jatkan em. tavalla, eli katkos rintojen alle.
2. Teen ihan ohjeen mukaan ja katson tuleeko siitä lyhyt, ja jos niin kiroan (hartaasti).
3. Puran alakappaleet nyt kun ei vielä kauheasti ole mennyt aikaa ja mietin langalle jotain muuta käyttöä.

Mitä sitä siis tekisi?

So, what to do? After I've surfed around and looked at photos of Dibs that other people have made I'm not so sure anymore that this is the best pattern for me. On the IK photo it seems that the lower part - upper part division comes to about the breast level. And is that such a good place for a vertical join? One option is to modify the pattern so that the vertical part is just below the breasts (and make the top part consequently a bit higher). Or I could just rip what I have made so far and do something else.

So, options:

1. I'll sew the lower parts together and knit the missing pieces on them and block them and see what happens. And if it looks good I'll do my modifications, meaning the cut below the breats.
2. I'll do the thing according to the pattern and if it turns out short and weird I'll curse (hard)
3. I'll rip the two lower parts now that I haven't invested that much time in it and find some other use for the yarn.

What is a girl to do?

Taas yksi niitä päiviä - One of those days again

Hooh, nyt ei mikään taas suju. Ehkä se johtuu siitä että rynnistin aamulla jo puoli kymmeneksi jumppaan. Eipä siinä muuten mikään mutta ei oikein nukuttanut ja luinpa sitten kirjaa vähän myöhään...on sekin, työaamuisin tuntuu että minut saisi kammeta sorkkaraudan avulla sängystä mutta kyllä sitä viikonloppuna, välillä.

Keskiviikko ja hieman torstaista tuli vietettyä maalla ja en sitten torstai-iltana minnekään päässyt kun juutuin koneen eteen. Puoli päivää meni ensin suunnitellessa ja sitten tein hihan. Kyllä siitä nyt suunnilleen sellainen tuli mitä ajattelinkin, mutta ehkä puran kuitenkin koko alun ja teen uuden. Näyttäähän tuo hyvältä nyt, mutta totuus on hieman toisenlainen.

Sigh, nothing seems to work right now. Maybe it has something to do with me dragging myself out of bed to get to the 9:30 spinning class this morning. Normally it wouldn't have been a problem but I wasn't feeling particularly sleepy last night and ended up reading a book until the small hours of the night. Funny, on work days it feels like I need a crow-bar to separate myself from the bed but once it is weekend...well, it's a different matter, occasionally.

Wednesday and a part of Thursday we spent at the countryside and the rest of the Thursday I spent making a pattern for a sweater and then I made a sleeve, with the machine. It turned out about right but I'm thinking of ripping it and starting again. It does look good now, but the truth is really something else.

Nimittäin sain langan pariin otteeseen kiertymään neulaporttien ympärille (enkä huomannut koko asiaa ennenkuin myöhemmin) ja nurjalla puolella on parikin tällaista ihanaa lenkkiä. Tässä niistä rumempi. Ja kuvasta näkyy langan väri huomattavasti paremmin kuin edellisestä. Se on sellaista tummaa liilaa.

Namely I managed to get the yarn wrapped around the gate pegs a couple of times (and didn't realize it until much later) which resulted in nastly-looking yarn loops. Here is the worst of them. And in the above picture the colour of the yarn is much clearer than in the previous one. It is sort of dark violet.

Ja maalla neuloin sukkaa...lankana jälleen kipuapu silkkivilla. Näistä tein aiemmin sukat äidilleni ja viimeksi kotona käydessäni hän laittoi mukaan vyyhdin ja käskyn neuloa enolle syntymäpäivälahjaksi sukat. En sitten tullut kysyneeksi että milloinkohan ne syntymäpäivät ovat, mutta ensimmäinen sukka on jo hyvää vauhtia valmistumassa joten eiköhän ne siitä. Pitäisiköhän sitä seuraavaksi neuloa tästä sukat itsellekin? Ja neulepinta muistuttaa vieläkin ihan kaurapuuroa.

And when at the countryside I knitted a sock. The yarn is again 70% un-treated finnsheep wool and 30% silk. I made previously socks for my mother with the same yarn and the last time I visited her she gave me a skein of it and orders to knit socks for my uncle as a birthday present. I did not ask when the birthday actually is but since the first sock is happily on its way I think I'll do just fine. Maybe I should knit socks for myself with this yarn next? And the knitted surface still reminds me of oatmeal.

Kahdet hikoilut päivässä on jo hieman liikaa, kun ei kerran ole edes helle. Ensimmäiset tuli niillä puolentoistatunnin jumppasessioilla aamulla ja toiset on tullut imuroinnilla. Ostettiin eilen uusi hieno imuri ja pitihän sitä heti käyttää (varsinkin kun on paikat kissankarvoja täynnä). Raati miettii vielä mielipidettä imurista...onhan se ihan kiva ja kevyt (entiseen verrattuna) ja pölypusseja näyttää saavan ihan kivasti, mutta en ole oikein varma pidänkö automaattisesta tehonsäädöstä. Lattialla se on ihan ok mutta jos käyttää mattoasentoa suulakkeesta matolla niin tuntuu että koko matto lähtee mukaan. Tuolla saisi varmaan imettyä maalitkin seinistä. Enpä viitsinyt kokeilla kun voisi olla hiukan hankalaa selittää maalitonta seinää vuokranantajan edustajalle asunnosta lähdettäessä: " ei me, mutta kun se imuri...".

Two sweaty sessions a day is a bit too much since it is not even that hot. First one was the hour and half spinning+abs/back session this morning and the other I got while vacuuming. We bought a new and fancy vacuum cleaner yesterday and of course I had to use it right away (especially since there's cat hair everywhere). The jury is out on the verdict still...it's nice and light (compared to the old one) and the bags seem to be available everywhere but I'm not sure if I like the automatic power adjustment. On the floor it is quite ok but if one uses the carpet-setting on the floorpiece it feels like it tries to suck up the whole carpet. I guess I could even rip the paint off the wall. Not that I tried, since it might be a bit hard to explain to the owner when we leave this flat: "it's not us, it was the vacuum cleaner...".

Ja pitää kait hiukan vielä jatkaa siivoamista, vaikka jo vähän väsyttää. Miehenpuolikas saa kyllä tehdä mulle drinkin kun tulee kotiin, olen ansainnut sen! Ja jos joku ei ole vielä huomannut niin uusi Ulla tuli jo. Kylläkyllä...mun ohje puuttuu sieltä vielä, mutta lupaan sen viikonlopun aikana sinne saattaa, jollen jo tänään! Pitää muutenkin vielä viilata pari yksityiskohtaa kohdalleen. Muutenkin, jos huomaa jotain erhettä niin eikun viestiä vaan sinne sähköpostiin, meiltä kun saattaa jäädä aina joku asia huomaamatta.

I better get back to cleaning...even though I am feeling a bit tired now. I think I'll get the man to make me a drink when he gets home, I've earned it! And if you're so inclined, the new Ulla came out a couple of days ago. And yes, my pattern is still missing, but I promise I'll be good and get it there during this weekend if not today.

Ho!

Kotiuduimme Tampereelta ihan kivasti kotiin ja konsertti oli kiva. Fork tosin toi enemmän kuin vähemmän ruotsinlaivatunnelmaa, mutta toimi tunnelman kohottajana enemmän kuin hyvin. Vega oli taattua kamaa, ja kuulimme uusia kappaleita seuraavalta levyltäkin, jee! Lisäksi harrastimme kulddyyriä kahden näyttelyn muodossa, Marilyn-kuvien ja Fabergen esineitten. Molemmat olivat hienoja. Enpä tiennytkään että Marilyn Monroe oli käynyt sappirakkoleikkauksessa...valokuvissa näkyi arpi ja se johti googlaukseen. Näin sitä, nykyaikana.

We got back from Tampere quite ok and the concert was nice. Fork reminded us of more than enough of the swedish ferries but worked as a mood enhancer more than fine. Suzanne Vega was good and familiar and we even got to hear some new pieces from her nex album, yeah! We also went to two exhibitions, Marilyn Monroe's last pictures and the Faberge-exhibition. Both were spectacular. I didn't know that Marilyn Monroe had a gall-bladder surgery...the scar was visible in the photographs and that led to googling. So it is, in these days.

Mutta kulttuuri sikseen ja takaisin neuleisiin. Tässä on fuusioneuletakki, suurin osa koneella, mutta kaulus ja sydänkuviot käsin. Aika kiva siitä tuli vaikka itse sanonkin. Ja miksi en sanoisi, onhan siinä puolia mitkä voisi tehdä paremminkin, mutta ensimmäiseksi työksi omalla neulekoneella se on täydellinen ja suurenmoinen. En siis odota muita kuin kiittäviä kommentteja ja hirveätä ylistystä. Myöhemmin voinen sitten kuunnella myös kritiikkiä, mutta en nyt.

But aside from culture, this is the fusion cardi I made. Almost all of it is machine made, just the neck band and the hearts are done by hand. It turned out quite nicely, if I say so myself. And why wouldn't I, there's parts of it that I could have done better but as a first knit with my new knitting machine it is perfect and magnificent. So all I listen to are praises and more praises. Later I can listen to critique also, but not now.

Ja lopuksi kuva Kotkan maanvaivasta. Kyllä se nyt kuvissa näyttää ihanalta ja söpöltä, mutta todellisuus oli jotain vallan muuta. Se tunki heti sisälle kun ovea raoitettiin edes vähän ja ei edes vesishokkiterapia (suihkupullolla päin näköä) haitannut sitä kauaa. Suosittelin jatkosijoitusta paremmille käpyapajille (siirtoa pyykkikorissa noin viiden kilometrin päähän). Että näin meillä.

And to finish (almost) I'll show you a photo of the menace of Kotka. Sure, it looks nice and fluffy now but as soon as we cracked the door open even a bit the darned thing wanted to come inside. Not even water shock therapy curbed its enthusiasm (a well-placed squirt of water). I recommended relocation to greener nut-pastures (moving it couple of miles away inside a cloth hamper). So it was, with our family.

Ja kyllä, aion jatkaa yksitavuisten otsikoiden sarjaa vielä jonkin aikaa...sillä nyt on kesäloma ja kuuma ja aivot on hitaat ja tahmaiset. Mutta, muurahaiset palautuivat sinne mistä tulivatkin (parvekkeen tai ruusupuskiin), lienevät vain häiriintyneet parvekkeenpesuoperaatiosta. Ja mikäs niitä nyt olisi enää takaisin keittiöömme johdattanut kun imuroimme etujoukon pölynimuriin talteen. Nyt sitten vain pitää ostaa uusi pölynimuri kun vanhaan on hankala hommata pusseja (tarvikepussit eivät käy, kokeiltu on).

Kotiuduin tänään (no, eilen oikeastaan) Kotkasta kaverin tyttären 2-vuotissynttäreiden kautta. Tämä valmistui vihdoin ja pääsi käyttäjälleen asti, pääntiekaitaleen tein sitten loppujenlopuksi käsin kun en jaksanut enää neljättä tehdä koneella. Ehtiihän sitä, harjoitella, vielä myöhemminkin. (Kuva myöhemmin, se on kamerassa ja kamera on...jossain). Kotkassa meitä piinasi muurahaisten sijasta hullu orava, mutta siitäkin lisää myöhemmin. Tänään pitäisi vielä singahtaa Tampereelle, jossa aikaa vietämme näyttelyiden ja Suzanne Vegan konsertin merkeissä. Helsinkiin paluu tapahtuu lauantaina iltapäivällä. Kuvia saatte odottaa siis siihen asti, heips! Nyt voisi vaikka mennä nukkumaan, jos se onnistuu kun kaulan alaosaa syyhyttää vallan mahdottomasti...aurinkoihottumaa tai jotain. Eikun kortisonia etsimään.

And yes, I'm going to continue with the one-syllable titles for a while since it's summer and holiday and hot and my brain has melted a bit. But, the ants went back to where they live (under the balcony or in the rose bushes probably) they probably just got a bit antsy with all that balcony-washing and all. And there wasn't really anyone to lead them back into our kitchen since we vacuumed up their scout team. Now we just have to buy a new vacuum cleaner since that took care of the last bag and it is really difficult to get new ones to use with our old machine (can't use the generic bags in that one, we've tried).

I came back from Kotka today (well, yesterday actually) via a friend's daughter's 2-year party. This was finally finished and reached its new owner. I made the neck band eventually by hand since I was too lazy to make a fourth try with the machine. I'll have plenty of time for that - later, practice I mean. (The photo will come later, it's in the camera and the camera is - somewhere). In Kotka we were plagued not by ants but by a crazy squirrel, but more of that later. Later today we're off to Tampere where we will spend our time visiting some exhibitions and enjoying a Suzanne Vega concert. We'll be back in Helsinki sometime on Saturday afternoon. An update with pics will appear then. Now I could try the sleep thing, if this horrible itch I have at the base of my neck lets me do that (sun sensitivity or something like that). Time to find the cortizone cream.

Loma jatkuu (ja helteet) ja minä suuntaan nyt vuorostani Kotkaan päin. Hannu jää valvomaan muurahaistilannetta. Aamulla oli keittiön lattialla noin miljoona muurahaista ja nyt parveketta ei voi käyttää että ne pirulaiset eivät pääse sisään. Näitä ensimmäisessä kerroksessa asumisen riemuja...

My hoiday continues (and the hot weather too) and I'm heading off to Kotka now. Hannu stays at home to supervise the ant-situation. We had about a million of them on our kitchen floor this morning and now we can't use the balcony because then they might get in again. Oh, the joys of livin on the first floor...

Ulkomaan tuliaisia - Souvenirs

Bryssel siis oli ihan jees, ja tuli käytyä myös Antwerpenissa ja Bruggessa (jossa suoritin vaaditun torniinkiipeämisen). Sattumoisin osuin paikalle aleaikaan, ja niitäkin tuli ihmeteltyä. Lankakauppavierailut ajoitin strategisesti samalle päivälle kotiinlähdön kanssa ja kaupat sijaitsivat kätevästi sopivan matkan päässä toisistaan. Ei kylläkään niin kätevästi, että olisin voinut kävellä putiikilta toiselle, mutta ratikka kulki melkein kaupan ovelta toiselle. Ensimmäisenä suuntasin kulkuni Phildarin liikkeeseen (Phildar 734 Chaussée de Wavre, 1040 Etterbeek).

Brussels was quite nice and we visited also Antwerp and Brugge (where I did my required tower-climbing excercise). I just happened to be there in time for the sales, and we visited those also. My yarn shop visits happened on the day of our departure and they were conveniently situated at about the same region of the town. Not so conveniently that I could have walked from one to the other but the tram was nice and quick. First one was Phildar (734 Chaussée de Wavre, 1040 Etterbeek).

Ja kuten kuvastakin näkee, siellä oli myös ale. Mukaan lähtivät nämä ihastuttavan väriset 100% silkkiä olevat Phil Soie-langat. Myyjättären olemattoman englannintaidon ja minun huonon ranskani avulla saimme selvitettyä että noin 12 kerää riittää hihalliseen kesäpaitaan minunkokoiselleni. Saapa nähdä, lisää voi ainakin olla vaikea saada, mutta ainahan ne hihat voi jättää poiskin.

And as you can see from the photo there was a sale going on too. I left the store with these lovely 100% silk Phil Soie-balls. With the sales-lady's non-existent English skills and my poor command of the French language we managed to come to the conclusion that 12 balls should be enough to make a short-sleeved summer sweater for someone my size. We'll see and if it is not enough I can always discard the sleeves.

Seuraavaksi huristelin toiseen kauppaan nimeltä Art et Fil (rue du Bailli 25, 1000 Bruxelles). Harmikseni satuin paikalle juuri hieman ennen lounasajan taukoa joten lankakaupan ihmettelyyn ei jäänyt paljoa aikaa. Silmään ei kuitenkaan tarttunut mitään kivaa, vaikka lankoja paljon kaupassa olikin (hieman miinusta huonolle hintojen esillepanolle, mutta kaupassa näytti olevan joku uudelleenjärjestely ja -hinnoitteluoperaatio meneillään). Myyjätärtä en kiinnostanut kyllä pätkääkään sen jälkeen kun mongersin että en oikein osaa ranskaa. No, omapa oli häviönsä. Täälläkin oli kyllä ale ja paikan lankavalikoima oli runsas, joskin hinnat näyttivät korkeilta.

Next I went to the other shop called Art et Fil (rue du Bailli 25, 1000 Bruxelles). Unfortunately I happened to get there just a bit before the lunch-time closing so I did not have much time to browse the shop. Nothing jumped up to me and asked to go home with me in that time (a bit negative points for the poor showing of prices but there seemed to be some re-organizing and -pricing going on). The sales-lady, however, couldn't have cared about me less after I managed to say I don't speak French much. Well, her loss. Sale was going on there too and the yarn selection was good even though the prices seemed a bit steep.

Laukkua en löytänyt (vaikka vierailinkin mm. Longchampin liikkeessä), kun joku ryökäle oli ehtinyt ensin ja ostanut edellispäivänä bongaamani kivan veskan alta pois ja muuta ei sattunut silmään. Kengät kuitenkin sain, tämmöiset vähän erikoisemman oloiset ja punaiset (ja mun nilkat ei sitten luonnossa ole aivan noin tasapaksut!). Aivan ihkut! Ja ehkä mukaan tarttui hieman Godivan tuotteitakin lentokentältä, vaikka siellä ei alea ollutkaan (tiesittekö että 500g mahtuu noin 32 suklaapalaa?).

I did not find a bag (even though I did visit for example the Longchamp store), for someone had gone and bought the nice one I spotted after the shops had closed and I did not fancy another. I did, however, find shoes, a bit out of the ordinary and red and quite lovely (and my ankles are not nearly as thick in real life!). And maybe I picked up a couple of pieces of Godiva chocolates at the airport even though there was no sale there (did you know that you can fit about 32 pieces into 500g?).

Suomessa taas...Brysselissä oli kuuma, hyvin kuuma...ja ehdin jo hiukan iloita siitä, että palaan kylmään pohjolaan, mutta ei, se kuuma seuraa tännekin. Ei voi mitään siis. Mutta, matka oli ihan kiva, pääsi verestämään vanhoja muistoja jne ja ostamaan hiukan kenkiä ja lankaakin (siis, voiko kenelläkään olla liikaa kenkiä tai lankaa?). Eli kaikenkaikkiaan ihan kiva matka. Mutta ehkä seuraavaa voisi suunnitella ihan hiukan kauemmin kuin kaksi nanosekunttia, eh?

Back in Finland again...Brussels was hot, very hot...and I had a brief period of joyous celebration thinking I'm going back to the cold north, but no, the hot is following me here. Can't help it. But, all in all, the trip was nice, had a chance to liven up the old memories and buy some yarn and shoes (I mean, can anyone have too much shoes or yarn?). So, all in all, a nice trip. But maybe the next one could stand a little more planning than two nanoseconds, eh?

Loma! - Holiday!

Lomallallaallaa...alkoi tänään siis. Ja huomenna suunta erääseen EU-maan pääkaupunkiin jossa voi seurata mm. Apocalyptican esiintymistä. Tänään pitäisi siis vielä: 1) pakata 2) häröillä 3) ullata 4) jotain muuta, mitä? Ainakin pitää ladata kaikki mukaanotettavat vempeleet kuten iPod, kamera ja kännykkä. Miksi, oi miksi, ei ole mitään kätevää yhteislatauspistettä minne ladattavat laitteet voisi vain heittää ja ne latautuisivat itsestään? Mutta ilmeisesti sentään päästiin istumaan businesspaikoille koneessa. woo.

Holiday...(sing it like Madonna) and it began today. And tomorrow I'm heading into a capital of an European town where one can for example listen to Apocalyptica play. And tomorrow I have to still: 1) pack, 2) wibble, 3) do ulla 4) something else, what? At least I have to charge every electrical thingy I'm taking with me like iPod, camera and cellphone. Why, oh, why, there isn't somewhere where you can just throw the things and they charge themselves? But apparently we got into business section at the plane. woo.

Neuletakin kaulus oli kuin olikin liian leveä. Ja täydellinen aika huomata se on siinä vaiheessa kun vetoketju on paikoillaan ja kauluksen alavaraa ommellaan kiinni. Siispä sakset sanoi nips-naps ja irti läksi se. Ja pitäisi tehdä uusi ainakin 40 silmukkaa kapeampi. Ehkä sen jätän matkan jälkeiseen aikaan kuitenkin. Mutta alatasoa ehdin kokeilla tuossa päivänä yhtenä lisää ja tein puuvillalangasta mallitilkun. Ei paha, ei...joustimesta tulee todella nättiä eikä värivalikoimakaan outoudestaan huolimatta ole ollenkaan pahannäköinen näin raitamuodossa (tuo tumma on tummaa mustikansinistä). Harmi vaan että oranssia on aika vähän.

The neck band of the cardi turned out too wide after all. And the perfect time to notice that is after sewing on the zipper and while sewing the lower half of the neck band in place. So, scissors went snip-snap and out came the neck band. I have to make a new one, at least 40 stitches narrower but I think I'll leave that until after the trip. But I did try out the ribber again and made a swatch with cotton yarn. Not bad, not bad at all...the rib looks really nice and the colour combo is not bad either even though the combination sounded odd (the dark one is dark blueberry blue). It's too bad I don't have much of the orange.

Uusimmat ostokset ovat tässä: Colourmartilta 100% kashmiria, hiukan yli 400g. Aivan ihanan tuntuista ja tekisi mieli tilata heti lisää, mutta järki sanoo että ensin pitää kokeillä millaista tuosta tulee neulottuna. Koneella olisi tarkoitus tehdä jotain, joku villis tai sellaista. Ohutta, mutta ihanaa, kiva.

Heh, kissa pyrkii syliin mutta mulla on shortsit ja se saa melkein kylmänväristyksiä jos sen pitää koskea paljaaseen ihoon. On ne hassuja otuksia.

My latest acquisitions are here: 100% cashmere from Colourmart, a bit over 400 grams. Quite lovely, I'm thinking I should order some more straight away but common sense demands that I wait and see first how it turns out knitted. Some nice sweater with the machine, methinks. Thin but lovely, nice.

Heh, cat would like to come and sit on my lap but I'm wearing shorts and she dislikes strongly touching bare skin. Silly creatures.

Kuinka (ei) tehdä pääntiekaitale koneella - How (not) to make a neckband with a knitting machine

Neuletakki on kursittu kokoon, vain pääntiekaitale, vetoketju ja koristelut puuttuvat. Vaikka takki näyttää mielestäni olevan mallia "iso, vielä isompi ja kauhean iso" niin yritän ignoroida koko jutun ja lohduttaudun sillä että olen mitat repinyt ns. omasta päästä vertailemalla useamman neulemallin 90-senttisen takin ulottuvuuksia ja itse otettuja mittoja (toim. huom: parin viinilasillisen jälkeen ei kannata ottaa mittoja, sillä kuka siitä korjaillusta luvusta enään osaa päätellä oliko se 30 vai 36). Eli takista pitäisi tulla siis Hyvä ja Sopiva ja sitäpaitsi, lapsethan kasvavat, eikö? Yleensä ainakin, koska muuten maailmalla juoksisi kauheasti 90-senttisiä pikkuihmisiä... Mutta, asiassa eteenpäin.

The cardi has been sewn together and what is missing is neck band, zipper and decorations. Even though the cardi looks to me to be "big, bigger and humonguous" I'll try to ignore that and console myself with the fact that I have taken the measurements by comparing several different patterns for 90-cm kids and from my own measurements (note from the editor: one shouldn't take measurements after couple of glasses of wine because it's darn difficult to find out afterwards from the corrected-on numbers whether it was 30 or 36). So the cardi should be Good and Perfect Fit and besides, kids do grow - don't they? Usually anyway because otherwise there'd be hordes of 90-cm little people running around...but, to get on with the business.

Tarkoituksena oli tehdä kaula-aukon ympärille yksinkertainen nirkkoreunus, kuten kaikissa muissakin reunoissa. Langan loputtua kesken juuri kriittisessä kohdassa, sai Novitan Bambino toimia korvauslankana ja koska se vaikuttaa olevan tiheydeltään suunnilleen samaa luokkaa Lang Fantomasin kanssa, niin ei tässä mitään mallitilkkuja tarvita. Senkun koneelle!

Nirkkoreunus tehdään siis näin (yksi versio): luo e-wrap-tekniikalla silmukat joka toiselle neulalle ja neulo kahta numeroa normaalia pienemmällä tiheyssäädöllä x riviä - tästä tulee alavara (tässä x on reunuksen korkeuteen verrannollinen luku - minä halusin noin 3cm, siis neuloin 10 krs). Ota kaikki neulat työhön mukaan ja vaihda tiheyssäädöksi yhtä numeroa normaalia pienempi ja neulo 1-2 krs enemmän kuin alavaraa. Jos tekisin normaalia reunusta poimisin alareunan lankalenkit joka toiselle neulalle ja neuloisin käännöksen yhteen tiheyssäädöllä normaali+2. Mutta koska haluan ommella reunuksen kaulukseen kiinni, niin jätän edellisen väliin ja sen sijaan neulon jämälangalla jonkunverran ja pudotan valmiin tekeleen neuloilta.

Ai niin, ehkä ennen kuin tekee mitään muuta kannattaa miettiä että kuinka pitkä (tai leveä) siitä pääntiekaitaleesta tehdään. Otetaan siis mittanauha käteen, mitataan kauluksen ympäryys, saadaan sikaiso numero (ei se voi olla totta), toistetaan homma pari kertaa, saadaan siltikin sikaiso luku (sama kuin edellisillä kerroilla) ja päätetään luottaa siihen. Seuraavaksi mitataan helmareunuksesta 10cm vastaava silmukkamäärä ja saadaan sikaleveää pääntiekaitaletta vastaava silmukkamäärä (joka on myös sikaiso, mutta ehkä sen toistaminen tässä ei ole tarpeellista).

The object of the excercise was to make a simple picot edge like in the other parts of the cardi. And since the yarn ran out just before this I got some Novita Bambino to act as a replacement. And since it seemed to be of quite the same thickness as Lang Fantomas, I didn't bother with swatching but got to the knitting straight away.

This is how you do a picot edge (one version): cast-on with e-wrap on every other needle (of the required amount) and knit x rows (here x is comparable to how long edge you want, for me 3cm corresponded with about 10 rows) with density number two below normal (this forms the inner side of the edge). Take all needles into work and knit with density one below normal 1-2 rows more than previous. If I was making a normal edge I'd then pick up the yarn loops from the first row and put them on every other needle and knit the edges together with density normal+2. But since I want to sew on the edge I just knitted with waste yarn and dropped the neck band from the machine.

Oh, yeah, maybe it's a good idea to figure out how many stitches you actually need before doing any knitting. So, take one cardi and one measuring tape and do the measuring. Get an alarmingly large number (it really can not be true), repeat previous measures once or twice, get the alarmingly large number again, twice, and decide to trust it (even though it is alarmingly large). Next you measure using the hem picot edge how many stitches does it take to get 10cm of edging and from there get the number of stitches needed (which, of course, is even more alarmingly large number but I feel I don't have to mention it here).

Sen jälkeen homma menikin näin:

• Tuo neulat eteen, luo silmukat, neulo x kerrosta, huomaa, että neuloja tarvitaankin oikeasti tuplasti se mitä sinulla on (jos neulotaan joka toiselle neulalle niin neulat pitää kuitenkin valita loppusilmukkamäärän alueelta) - kiroile, purkaa, ja aloita alusta.

• Tuo neulat eteen, luo silmukat, neulo x kerrosta, ota peliin loput neulat, neulo x kerrosta ja huomaa että olet neulonut koko homman liian tiukalla - kiroile, purkaa ja aloita alusta.

• Tuo neulat eteen, luo silmukat, neulo x kerrosta, ota peliin loput neulat, neulo x kerrosta ja huomaa että nyt unohdit vaihtaa löysemmälle siinä vaiheessa kun otit loput neulat peliin. (Onneksi huomasit tämän jo neulottuasi vasta kaksi kerrosta ylävaraa ja vielä kaiken voi purkaa koneessa. ) Siispä pura pari kerrosta, vaihda tiheyttä ja neulo x kerrosta. Tässä vaiheessa tehdään sillä pienellä vaaleanpunaisella nöttösellä pari vaaleanpunaista koristeraitaa. Eli vaihda langanohjaimeen lanka, pidä langanpäästä tiukasti, vie kelkkaa vasemmalle ja huomaa että se tiputti alusta noin parikymmentä silmukkaa. Kiroile, ja nyhrää tippuneet silmukat takaisin neuloille ja neulo pari kerää pinkkiä ja vaihda takaisin lilaan.

Ja kah, tähän kaikkeen meni vain melkein tunti, mutta lopputuloksena on kippurainen pääntiekaitale. Mitä tästä opimme: älä koskaan luule voivasi neuloa ilman aivojasi (ja kunnon muistiinpanoja!). Seuraavassa osassa näemme jännittävän lopputuloksen: oliko se sittenkin liian leveä vai Juuri Sopiva. Pysykää kanavalla.

After that it went something like this:

Bring the needles forward, e-wrap, knit x rows, notice that you need twice the amount of needles that you have (if you cast on to every other needle you still have to pick the needles based on the end needle number and not half that) - curse, rip and start over.

Bring the needles forward, e-wrap, knit x rows, bring the rest of the needles forward, knit x rows and notice that you have made the whole thing too tight - curse, rip and start over.

Bring the needles forward, e-wrap, knit x rows, bring the rest of the needles forward, knit x rows and notice that now you forgot to switch to larger at that point where you brought in the rest of the needles. (Luckily you noticed this only after couple of rows so you can still rip them in the machine.) So rip a couple of rows, switch density and knit x rows. This point you switch to that small ball of pink yarn you have left and kit a couple of decorative rows. So, switch yarns to the cam, hang on to the end of the yarn, move the cam to left and notice that it dropped about twenty stitches from the begining. Curse and work the dropped stitches back onto needles and knit the pink rows and switch back to the lilac.

An lo, all this took measly hour but now you got a curly neck band. What did we learn from all this: never think you can do brainless knitting (and use good notes too!). In the next part we'll see the exciting result: was it too wide after all or Just Right. Stay tuned.

On taas kesä - It is summer again

Kesä on ja minä peuhaan villan kanssa. Mitenkäs muutenkaan. Pikkutytön neuletakki on viittä vaille valmis ja näytti näin kauniilta sunnuntaina levätessään pyyheliinan päällä. Ja tähän pisteeseen riitti lankakin. Minä ja langan ostaja olimme sitä mieltä että lankaa olisi pitänyt olla viisi kerää, mutta aikani pengottuani lankavarastoja tuli siihen tulokseen että olisi vain pitänyt luottaa omaan blogiin. Siellä kun sanotaan että 200 grammaa. Olisihan tuo vallan mainiosti riittänyt noin vuoden ikäisen kokoon, mutta kun...tyttö on jo lähemmäs kahta. Vähän kesti, mutta inspiraatiota saa joskus odottaa kauan!

It is summer again and I'm fooling around with wool. What else. The small girl's cardi is almost finished and looked this pretty last Sunday lounging on a towel. And here is how far the yarn got me. Me and the yarn buyer were of the opinion that there should have been 250 grams of the yarn but after rummaging around in my stash I came to the conclusion that I should have trusted my blog. It says there in plain numbers that I only got 200 grams of it. That would have been plenty for a one year's size, but the girl in question is almost two... What can you do, sometimes it takes a while to get inspired.

Ostinpa sitten vallan toisenväristä lankaa, eli vaaleanlilaa Novitan Bambinoa. Se näytti sopivan aika hyvin tämän langan tiheyteen eikä riidellyt kovasti värinkään puolesta. Kauluksesta tulee siis lila (vaaleanpunaisella raidalla) ja lila on myös vetoketjukin. Sitten väkerrän vielä jotain liloja koristuksia takkiin. Tulee siis niin söpöä että melkein oksettaa.

Then I bought a completely different coloured yarn, that is pale lilac Novita Bambino. It looked to be a pretty good match yarn strenghtwise and didn't clash with the overall colour too much. So the collar will be lilac (with a pink stripe) and the zipper will be too. Then I'll do some decorations with the lilac yarn. And it'll probably be so cute I'll feel like throwing up.

After the cardi excercises were rudely interrupted by the lack of yarn I decided to try the ribber on my machine. And lo, rib. I'm thinking of a cotton raglan-sleeved sweater. We'll see how that goes.

Edistystä kaikkialla - Progress everywhere

Dodiih! Eiköhän se tästä...tekaisin tuossa iltasella pikaisesti yhden hihasen. Väärän alun jälkeen (jos pitää luoda 40 silmukkaa niin ei kannata ottaa sitä neljääkymmentä neulaa nollan molemmilta puolilta) kaikki luisti kuin tanssi ja noin puoli tuntia alkuähertämisen jälkeen minulla oli tämmöinen. Ihan kokonainen hiha. Ja jos se näyttää hieman pieneltä kuvassa, niin se johtuu siitä että se on - pieni. Ei ole minun käteen moinen tarkoitettu, ei. Hieman pidempi tuosta tuli kuin mitä tarkoitin mutta...ylimääräisen voi vaikka purkaa jos siltä tuntuu.

Well, well! Shouldn't be a problem now...I made quick-like a small sleeve just now. After a false start (if you want to cast on 40 stitches better not do it to the needles up to 40 on both sides of the zero) everything was smooth sailing until the finish and after about half an hour I ended up with this. A whole sleeve. And if it looks a bit small it's because it is - small. Not meant for my hands, nope. I ended up with a slighly longer sleeve than intended but it's no problem. I can always rip out the extra if need be.

Neulekonesaaga, osa II - The knitting machine saga, part II

Tästä tulee nyt vaihteeksi kuvaton postaus, joten ne, joiden mielestä jokaisessa pitää olla kuvia, niin voivat lopettaa tähän. Kiitos käynnistä ja kuvallista sisältöä tulee sitten viikonlopun aikana kyllä.

Mutta, ajattelin nyt päivittää kun tiedän että kaikki istuvat jännityksestä kippuralla ja odottavat että "koska se nyt kirjoittaa miten sillä sen koneen kanssa menee". Ja eihän se käy että tässä toisten viikonloppua pilaa vatsakivunaiheuttajana, niin pitäähän sitä nyt. Ai mitä? Eikö kukaan olekaan kiinnostunut? No, kerron kuitenkin (mun blogi, mä teen mitä mä haluan, Mwhahahaaa!).

But, I thought I'd update now since I know all of you are sitting there waiting impatiently at the edge of your seat when I'm going to tell how things are going with my new pet. And one can't be responsible for ruining somebody else's weekend, now can one? Oh? Nobody cares? Well, I'll tell you anyway (since it's my blog and I can do as I please, Mwhahahaaa!).

Neulekonejumppaa on todellakin ehditty harrastaa, jonkinverran. Tosin aika sananmukaisesti kun huomasin mallitilkkua tehdessä (juu, sain tehtyä mallitilkun, hyvä minä!) että yksi pöydän jalka on ikävästi lyhyempi kuin muut. No, ajattelin siinä sitten että käännänpä seuraavana päivänä pöydän ympäri asentoon että lenksuva jalka on eri paikassa. Eli: alataso irti, ylätaso irti, pöytä eri asentoon, ylätaso kiinni, alataso....ei kiinni. Siitä mokomasta irtosi yksi osa ja koska ohjekirja on mallia hyödytön niin siinä vietinkin tovin pähkäillessä että mitenkäs se nyt ripustetaan takaisin. Tovin pähkäilyn jälkeen sain kuin sainkin ripustettua alatason myös paikalleen. Siinä sitten huomasin että nyt lenksui eri jalka. Pöydässä ei siis olekaan mitään vikaa vaan lattiassa. Sitä nyt on vaan hiukan vaikeampaa laittaa eri asentoon.

Keskiviikkona tein lisää opetteluja, mm. luomisen ja luomislangan neulomisen mukaan (tiputin neuleen alun kaksi kertaa neuloilta mutta ei nyt puututa siihen). Lisäksi yritin tehdä piparkakkureunaista päärmettä joka tuntui neulekonekurssilla vaikealta ja eihän se mokoma nytkään onnistunut. Parin ähertelytuokion jälkeen ei siis ole paljoa näytettävää mutta onpa kone hiukan tutumpi. Viikonloppuna voisi vaikka yrittää neuloa sillä ihan Jotain Järkevää. Jää nähtäväksi.

Knitting machine excercises continue, slowly but surely. And they have been that, excercises, that is. On Monday when I was making a swatch (yes, I did manage to make a swatch then, yay me!) I noticed that one table leg is shorter than the others and makes the table rock a bit. Well, on the next day I thought I'd turn the table around so that the short leg was in a better position. Meaning: detach the ribber, take off the upper bed, turn the table, attach the upper bed, attach the ribber...not. A part fell of from the damn thing and since the user's manual is pretty much useless in those kind of situations it took me a while to figure out how to put back the loose thing. After which I attached the ribber. And noticed that now it is another leg that seems shorter than the others. That being quite impossible I deduced (quite brilliantly, I might add), that it must be the floor that is the trouble. And that is a bit difficult to turn around.

On Wednesday I continued to play with the machine...casting on and attaching the ravel cord mostly (I managed to drop the knit from the needles twice but let's not get into that, shall we?). And I tried to make a scalloped edge that seemed quite difficult to do at the machine knit class and it was that still. So after a couple of excercises I don't have much to show but the machine is starting to feel more familiar. During the weekend I might actually do some Real Things with it. We'll see.

Huh!

Rankkaa on, enkä vielä ole päässyt edes neulonta-asteelle. Tänään se sitten vihdoinkin tuli, se neulekone. Pöytä olikin aika kookas ja vaati sen vuoksi uudelleenjärjestelyjä olohuoneessa. Aikani äherrettyäni pääsin sitten vihdoin kokoamaan itse konetta ja täytyy sanoa että ei se ole helppoa, ei. Vaikka diplomi-insinööri olenkin, niin silti käyttöohjeiden seuraaminen on todella vaikeata. Ne kun ovat täysin hämärät ja täynnä muka-suomea. Mutta eipä tänäänkään tarvinnut punttisalille mennä kun painavien metallihärveleiden ja pikkuhuonekalujen kantamisesta tulee ihan tarpeeksi hiki. Mieskin kun on jossain illanvietossa vielä. Näinköhän pääsen tänään edes kokeilemaan mokomaa... Vaan täytynee mennä jatkamaan kokoamista! Pitäisi tuota olohuoneen kaaostakin saada vähemmäksi.

It's hard and I haven't even got to the knitting part yet. It finally arrived today, my knitting machine. The table was bigger than I anticipated and some re-arranging of furniture was required. After moving things around I finally got to the assembly-part and I must say it is not easy. Even though I have a Master's degree in electrical engineering I find following the user's manual really hard. They are really unclear and full of mock-Finnish. But I didn't have to go to the gym today, dragging all those heavy metal pieces around sure gave me a good sweat. The man is away at some function this evening. I wonder if I get to try the thing out today or if I'm too tired... But I best go continue so I can have some order back into the living room.

Sattuu! - It hurts!

Nyt minullekin kävi niin. Kyseessä eivät ole kalliit ruusupuupuikot, kuten Terhin tapauksessa, vaan ihan tavallinen Addin bambupuikko (jotka nekin tosin maksoivat 6 euroa). Niin kai se on että ei 2mm:n puikot kestä minun käsittelyssäni, mutta harmittaa se silti että en saanut moisilla edes yhtä sukkaa aikaiseksi, sukkaparista puhumattakaan!

Now it happened to me too. These are not expensive rosewood dpns, as in Terhi's case, but just normal Addi bamboo needles (that cost six euros). I guess it just is that 2mm needles do not last in my knitting but I still feel a bit miffed that I did not manage to knit even one sock with them, not to mention a pair.

Koska moisen jälkeen ei huvita keskustella neulomisesta ollenkaan (taas piti purkaa sukkaa), niin hämäänkin teitä esittelemällä kuvan joululahjaksi saamistani kengistä ja laukusta. Kaivon ne esille ja totuttelin kenkiin imuroidessa (imurointi on paljon miellyttävämpää kun on kauniit kengät jalassa). Yllättävän mukavilta popot tuntuvatkin, vaikka muovinen varpaanvälikappale vaikuttaakin hieman hankaavan vasemman jalan isovarpaan viereistä varvasta (onko muilla varpailla nimiä kuin iso- ja pikkusellaisella?). Auttaisikohan asiaa jos virkkaisin muoviputken ympärille kerroksen villalankaa?

Since after what just happened I don't feel like talking about knitting (yes, I had to rip a part of the sock, again) I'll distract you with a photo of a pair of shoes and a handbag I got as a Christmas present. I dug them out and got acquainted with the shoes wearing them while vacuuming (it is much more enjoyable when done while wearing pretty shoes). They feel surprisingly comfortable though the plastic thingy that goes between the toes does feel like it could chafe a bit on the toe next to the big one (what is that called anyway?). Would matters improve if I crocheted some wool around that bit?

Takana pitkä viikonloppu - Long weekend finished

Pitkä viikonloppu oli mukava (pidin perjantain vapaata) ja laiskottelun ohella ehti jotain puuhailemaankin. Esim. värjätä lankaa Kool-Aidilla. Meinasin ensin värjätä kerän valkoista On Linen Kaschmerinoa (villaa, kashmiria ja hieman tekokuituja) mutta kun onnistuin oranssin sijasta saamaan vaaleanpunasävyistä värilientä niin vaihdoin suosiolla langan kipuapu silkkivillaan. Mikä olikin ihan järkevä päätös kun vyyhtiin sitomani Kaschmerinon pätkät värjäytyivät todella epätasaisesti.

Mutta, olisin siis halunnut saada aikaan oranssia ja kaadoin kattilaan pussin keltaista ja pussin punasävyistä ja sain aikaan öklönkellertävää pinkkiä ja heitin mukaan vielä yhden pussin. Ja tässä tulos. Aika miellyttävä kirsikanpunainen lankavyyhti. Paino jotain neljänkymmenen ja viidenkymmenen gramman välistä.

Long weekend is almost over (Thursday was a holiday here and I took Friday off) and I managed to do something productive amongs all the laziness too. Like dyeing with Kool-Aid. First I was thinking of dyeing a skein of white On Line Kaschmerino (wool, kashmir and some artificial fibers) but since I managed to mix a pinkish dye instead of the orange I wanted I switched to silk-wool. That was quite a good decision since the pieces of Kaschmerino I had tied the skein with caught the dye really unevenly.

But, I wanted to get an orange solution and I mixed one yellow with one red bag and ended up with something unpleasantly yellowish pink and decided to throw in a third bag. And here's the result. Quite pleasant cherry-coloured skein, weighing something between forty and fifty grams.

Lankaa tuli tilattua myös (ihan vahingossa, sormi lipsahti) kun Jannettelle tuli lisää Debbie Blissin Aran Tweediä fuksiana. Innostukseni punaisiin lankoihin on sikäli epäkäytännöllistä kun niistä on vaikea saada hyviä kuvia. Mutta sävy on suhteellisen oikein vaikka lanka onkin luonnossa paljon elävämmän ja kirkkaamman väristä.

I got new yarn also (quite by accident, my finger slipped, I swear) when Jannette got more of Debbie Bliss' Aran Tweed in Fuchsia. My preference for red-coloured yarns is a bit impractical because it's really hard to take decent pictures of red shades. But the shade is about right although in real life it's much more vibrant and bright.

Ostinpa myöskin neulekoneen (jee!), käytetyn. Siitä nyt ei sen enempää kun se on vielä kaupassa odottamassa pöytää. Ensi viikolla sen pitäisi saapua tänne kotiin. Mutta uudet lemmikit ovat kivoja.

I also bought a knitting machine (yeah!), used. And that's all I'm going to tell about it now since it's still at the store waiting for a table. Next week it should find its way here. But new pets are nice.

On taas maanantai - It's Monday again

Jotain neulekuvia vaihteeksi, eli kuvaa melkein valmiista Roguen hihasta. Jätän sen odottamaan tuohon pisteeseen kunnes saan toisen hihan samaan pisteeseen ja vartalo-osan kainaloihin. Sitä raglania meinaan kokeilla, jahka joskus siihen pisteeseen pääsen. Ehkä pitäisi aloittaa toinenkin hiha?

Some knitting pictures for a change, meaning an almost completed Rogue sleeve. I'll leave it in that stage waiting for the other sleeve and the body to reach the armpits. I'm going to try the raglan decreases once I get to that stage. I wonder if I should start the other sleeve now?

Lauantain saalista - Saturday's catch

Lauantaina oli lankakauppakierroksen vuoro. Marjutin kanssa onnistuttiin käymään monessa liikkeessä (joista kaikki eivät olleet lankakauppoja) mutta Menita jäi valitettavasti väliin kun siellä oli siirrytty jo kesäaukioloon ja liike oli auki vain kahteen. Pöh, sanon minä!

On Saturday it was time for yarn-shop visits. The two of us, Marjut and I, managed to visit plenty of stores (all of which weren't yarn ones) but unfortunately we had to skip Menita because they had swithced to summer opening times already and the store closet at two pm. Hmph, I say!

Ensimmäisenä esittelen viimeisen ostoksen, eli Behnford's kutsui Kool-Aideineen. Ostin pussin kaikkia "värejä" mitä sieltä löytyi ja toivottavasti pääsen kokeilemaan värjäystä ensi viikonloppuna. Luulenpa ettei siitä mitään villitystä minulla synny, mutta kun on sopivaa lankaa, niin pitäähän sitä kokeilla - minunkin.

First I'll show you what I bought last, namely Behnford's called me with its Kool-Aids. I bought a bag of all the different "colours" they had and hopefully I'll be able to try them next weekend. I doubt that it'll start a craze with me but since I have suitable yarn in stash I thought I should try it too.

Matka vei mm. Kirstikkiin (Mannerheimintie 50 jotain), joka myy ompelukoneiden ja -tarvikkeiden lisäksi myös lankaa. Harmi vaan, että lankavalikoima on pelkkää Novitaa, joten ei siis mitään kauhean ihmeellistä. Mutta onpa yksi uusi lankakauppa listalle kuitenkin.

Our journey took us among others to Kirstikki (Mannerheimintie 50 something) that sells mainly sewing machines and supplies but also yarn. Unfortunately they sell only Novita yarns so nothing exciting there. But, one more yarn store in Helsinki in any case.

Tarkoitus oli myös ostaa (öh, mikä se on suomeksi?) pallontekolaite(ko), no, jokatapauksessa sellainen härveli jolla saa vyyhtimuodossa olevasta langasta vyyhdinpuiden avustuksella pyöriteltyä nätin pallon. Sitä ei valitettavasti saanut mukaan, kun kaupassa ei ollut, mutta lupasivat tilata ja samalla sovin että pääsen testaamaan myyntiin tulevaa käytettyä kaksitasoreikäkorttineulekonetta. Hinta ei ollut paha, kun uuteen vertaa. Että ehkä minulla sitten kohta on ihka oma neulekone! Katsellaan... Mutta varauduin kuitenkin siihen kun kävimme viimeisessä viimeisessä lankakaupassa. Tai no, ei se oikeastaan ole lankakauppa, mutta sitäkin sieläl myydään, eli kyseessä oli La Alpaca. Sijainti on mitä mainioin...vain hiukan Menitasta eteenpäin Johanneksen kirkon ohi. Ostaa päräytin kilon kartion 100% baby-alpakkaa ihanaa tummanpunaista. Sitä kelpaa sitten neuloskella uudella (minulle) neulekoneella jos sellaisen hankin, tai ihan käsinkin jos en. Kaupassa oli myös ihania alpakkanalleja. Niin pehmeitä!

I was planning to buy a ball winder also (I do have a swift already). But unfortunately I didn't get one since they didn't have one at the store at the moment but hopefully next week they do. And while I was there I asked about their knitting machines and made arrangements to go and test one second-hand machine they have for sale. It is being checked out at the moment but maybe next Friday I'll get to test it. It is a punch-card two-bed machine and the price is reasonable compared to a new one. So maybe soon I'll have my own knitting machine! We'll see...but I prepared for it while we visited our last yarn store of the day, La Alpaca. All right, it's not really a yarn shop but they do sell yarn there also, alpaca of course. I bought a kilo cone of 100% baby alpaca in lovely dark red. Good to knit with my new (for me) knitting machine if I'll get one or by hand if I don't. They also had the most loveliest teddies made from alpaca fur. So soft!

Rogue etenee hitaasti mutta varmasti. Ensimmäinen hiha on valmis, tai siis tehty kainaloon asti. Harkitsen nimittäin raglan-kavennusten tekemistä.

Rogue is progressing slowly but surely. First sleeve is finished, well, up to the arm pit that is. I'm thinking of making raglan sleeves.
