Kiertoharjoituksia - Excercises in twisting

Kun isommat neuleet ei nyt oikein onnistu, neulotaan sitten pieniä (paitsi Hilja on kohta taas kunnossa). Ensimmäisenä piponen, jolla ei vielä ole nimeä. Tämä meni lahjaksi 2-vuotiaalle ja samalla ohjeella olisi tarkoitus tehdä pipa myös pienemmälle. Ohje ehkä tulevaan Ullaan.

When I don't have much luck with bigger knits at the moment I decided to move into smaller ones. Here's a summer hat that does not yet have a name. This was a present for a 2-year old and I'm planning on making a smaller one too. The pattern will probably be in the next Ulla.

Sitten kiertokokeiluja. Suunnitteilla ei ole mitään korkkiruuvijuttua (niitä löytyy muutenkin) vaan jotain mikä kiertyisi kätevästi kaulan ympärille.

Then I've experimented with short rows. I'm not planning on making a corkscrew scarf (there's plenty of those), just something that would wrap easily around the neck.

Lupasin tehdä äidille pellavalangasta tyynynpäällisiä ja koska hukkasin edellisen mallitilkun muistiinpanot (ylläri) niin piti tehdä uusi. No, siinä sitten vetelin tiheyskokeiluja koneella ja kelkka jumiutui langanpätkään ja sitä piti selvitellä. Irrotin kelkan koneesta ja poistin langan ja sisältä kuului kilinää. Kääntelin kelkkaa ja sieltä putkahti ulos tällainen. Ja ei, minulla ei ole minkäänlaista ideaa siitä mikä tuo on ja mistä se irtosi ja onko se jotenkin oleellinen osa vai ei. En nähnyt äkkiseltään mitään paikkaa mihin moisen voisi survoa enkä halunnut ruveta ruuvailemaan kelkkaa palasiksi joten jatkoin vain neulomista. Hyvin se näytti sujuvan, ilman tuotakin. Mutta eikö sitä koneita rassaillessa yleensä jää jotain osia yli?

I promised to make my Mom some pillow covers with linen yarn and since I lost the notes on the last swatch (what a surprise) I had to make a new one. As I did the tension swatches on the machine a piece of yarn got caught in the carriage and it jammed. After I removed the carriage from the machine and the offending yarn from the carriage I was planning on putting it back on the machine when I heard strange noises coming inside the carriage. And after some gentle shaking this popped out. No, I have no idea what it is and if it is essential or not. I did not see any place in the carriage that looked like it was missing a piece and I did not feel like ripping the carriage apart so I just went on knitting. The machine seemed to perform quite well even after the piece fell out. So we'll see. But don't you have extra parts after fiddling with machinery usually?

Yksinkertaisuus on kaunista - Simple is beautiful

Ehdin viimeisellä neulekonekurssikerralla tehdä boleron palasten lisäksi huivin. Pidän yksinkertaisista, selkeälinjaisista vaatteista joissa on kuitenkin joku juju. Tästä puuttuu vielä se juju, mutta muuten se on kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessaan kaunis.

On the last machine knitting class I managed to finish the bolero pieces and make a scarf. I like simple clothes that have smooth, clear lines and a bit of something. The scarf is still missing that something but is still quite beautiful in all its simplicity.

Käytin huiviin kartion Colourmartin merino/viskoosi/kashmiria (55/35/10) väriä Aubergine joka on lojunut varastossa vuoden 2006 lopusta asti. Painoa kartiolla oli 150 g ja metrejä noin 2100. Vetelin langan ihan yksinkertaisella jokaneulan 1x1-ribillä. Se syö enemmän lankaa mutta neulepinta pysyy kauniisti auki eikä vedä kasaan kuten normijoustimella.

For the scarf I used a cone of Colourmart's merino/viscose/kashmir (55/35/10) in colourway Aubergine, that had been sitting in the stash since late -06. The cone weighed 150 grams and had about 2100 meters. I knit the yarn quite simply using every needle rib at 1x1. It eats more yarn but the resulting knit stays open unlike normal rib.

Olin todella epäileväinen langan riittoisuuden suhteen. Kyllä, tiesin että se on ohutta mutta silti 150 g tuntuu kovin vähältä enkä halunnut mitään nysää. Mutta neulottaessa lankaa riitti ja riitti (vaikka neuloinkin vainoharhaisena kartio vaa'alla) ja tuloksena oli n. 28 cm leveä ja 190 cm pitkä huivi. Se kaipaa vielä kunnon pesua koska lanka on öljyttyä. Teen reunoihin jonkinlaiset pampulaviritykset koska olen huomannut että reunapaino auttaa huivia pysymään paremmin paikallaan.

I was really sceptical about how much I could get out of the yarn. Yes, I know it was thin but still, 150 grams is not that much and I did not want to end up with something that was almost but not quite long enough. But as I got knitting the yarn just went on and on (my scepticism caused me to knit with the cone on scales) and I ended up with this: 28 cm wide and about 190 cm long scarf. It still needs a good wash to remove the oil from the yarn and that little something. I think I'll add some kind of pompoms to the edges for I've noticed it helps the scarf stay better in place.

Yksi askel eteenpäin, kaksi taakse - One step forward, two steps back

Hieman otsikonmukaiselta tuntuu neulonta välillä. Ai miksikö? No tarkastellaanpa viimeaikojen saldoa:

1. aloitin Tomaton - luin kommentit Ravelrystä ja yritin valita tarpeeksi pienen koon. No ei onnistunut, mokoma on siltikin liian iso rinnan kohdalta eikä sitä enää pelasta mikään vaan purkuun menee (onneksi en neulonut loppuun asti). Kysymys on että aloitanko sen vielä uudestaan vai keksinko jotain muuta. Neliökauluksellinen puuvillasekoitepaita 3/4-hihoilla olisi kyllä ihan kiva, mutta en usko että tarvitsen siihen mitään ohjeita vaan katson itse sopivat silmukkamäärät.
2. aloitin huivinalkua omasta päästä seuraavaa Ullaa varten. Ja purin ja aloitin ja purin ja jne. Ei tullut ideasta huivia, tuli kippuralankaa.
3. tein tässä aika joku sitten Hiljan. Muuten ihan kiva, mutta joku ei kiinnittänyt tarpeeksi huomiota yläosan neuletiheyteen ja se venyi. Ja purettiin osaksi ja tuli ryppylankaa jne. Ja nyt se on tässä: etuosa on neulottu uudestaan.

I'm starting to get that feeling about my knitting. Why, do you ask? Well, let's see...

1. I started Tomato - read the comments about it on Ravelry and tried to choose small enough size. It still came out way too big around the bust and sleeves (I tried it on halfway) and can't be saved. So to the frogpond it goes. The question is should I start again or what? I could use a square neck cotton-mix pullover with 3/4 sleeves but I don't think I need a pattern for that, I could just use my own stitch counts.
2. I had an idea for a scarf for the upcoming Ulla and I started it. And ripped it. And started again and...you get the drift. Did not get a scarf, got curly yarn.
3. Knit Hilja a while back. But somebody did not pay close enough attention to the row gauge at the top part and it stretched. Then it got partially ripped and I got curly yarn etc. Now it is in the state pictured above: front part reknit, on to back.

Mutta neuloja on sitkeä eläin ja jatkaa aina vain. Purkukammotusten seuraksi lähti muotoutumaan takki Rowanin Lenpur Linenistä. Löysin Ketunpaää-tuotteen sivuilta ohjeen ko. langalle ja sehän näytti ihan kivalle. Hieman joutunee muokkaamaan tuota vartalo-osaa A-mallista muuksi. En kyllä yrittämälläkään saanut tiheyttä ihan täsmäämään mutta pääsin 2.5 mm puikoilla tarpeeksi lähelle ja niillä mennään. Puikoille ovat päässeet ensimmäisinä hihat.

But a knitter is a resilient animal and keeps on going. While I ponder what to do with the ones requiring a trip to the frogpond I started a cardi from Rowan Lenpur Linen. I found a pattern from a Finnish online yarn store page (Cari) and liked the design. I think I will modify the patttern a bit though to something else than A-shape. And I could not match the gauge but got close enough using 2.5 mm needles and I'll go with those. Started on the sleeves.

Tässä vapun kunniaksi lupaamiani huivikuvia. Ihan kivan kokoinen siitä tuli, vaikka päädyinkin tekemään sen pienemmän koon kun lanka loppui kesken.

Enää ei lomailla - It's not holiday anymore

Loma on ohi ja olen ollut töissä viikon, vaikka se tuntuukin pidemmältä ajalta. Ensi viikolla pitäisi alkaa kouluttamaan ihmisiä uuden projektityökalun käyttöön ja viikko menikin mukavasti koulutusmateriaalia tehden. Saatiin materiaali valmiiksi hyvin ja ajoissa perjantaina viideltä. Mutta blogaamista ei oikein jaksanut ajatella, hyvä että neulomista yleensä. Viime viikonloppuna aloitettua aivotonta sukkaa neuloin kyllä hieman, tosin sitäkin piti purkaa kun olin onnistunut mömmimään mallineuleessa jotain. Ilmeisesti ei ole niin aivotonta neuletta ettei siinäkin onnistuisi tekemään virheitä jos ei yhtään keskity.

Mutta tässä se on, SWTC:n Tofutsies-langasta (väri 727) aloitettu kesäsukka. Törmäsin lankaan varastonsiivoussessioissa ja se pääsi sukkalankajonon kärkeen. Tuntuma on miellyttävä, puuvillamainen ja neuloutuu mukavasti. Väri olisi mielestäni voinut olla lila-pinkkikirjavaa ilman musta-punaista osuutta (mikä kuvassa näyttää varjota ei sitä ole vaan eri väriä). Toivon pintaneuleen hieman estävän läikittymistä, saa nähdä mitä tapahtuu kun sukka tuosta etenee. Ai, ja tässä on myös menossa ensimmäinen kokeilu neliskulmaisilla puikoilla. En vielå ole huomannut mitään eroa normaalipuikkoihin verrattuna - tasaista tulee mutta niin tulee tavallisillakin. Ehkä eron huomaisi enemmän sileässä, nurjalla puolella?

The holiday is over and I've been back at work for a week. Though it feels like a much longer time. We're going to start training people on how to use the new project management tool and I've spent last week doing the training material with a colleague which we finished just in time on Friday at five. But I haven't had much energy left over for blogging nor for knitting. I have knit the supposedly brainless sock I started last weekend though apparently that wasn't brainless enough for I've had to rip it some already since I fudged the pattern repeat.

But here it is, the almost brainless sock from SWTC:s Tofutsies (727) yarn. I ran into the yarn while I was spring-cleaning my stash and it jumped to the top of the sock-yarn queue. The yarn feels really nice, cottony, and it is nice to knit. I don't care much for the black-red part of the colourway (what looks like a shadow on the photo is not, it's the black-red part) for I think the yarn would have been much nicer with just the pink-lilac part. I hope my simple stitch pattern prevents the pooling somewhat but I guess I'll just have to wait and knit. Oh, and this is the first time with square needles too. I can't say I feel a difference compared to normal dpns. Yes, the stitches are even but so are they with normal needles too. Maybe there would be more difference with stockinette at the purl side?

Icarus on ollut valmiina jo tovin. Sain ystävälliseltä ravelryläiseltä lisää lankaa ettei tarvinnut repiä pelihousuja. Sillä lanka loppui toistamiseen kesken, nyt kaksi kerrosta vaille loppua. Saamani lanka ei ollut ihan samaa sävyä, vaan keltaisempaa, mutta sitä ei kyllä tuosta helposti huomaa. Ja jos joku huomauttaa asiasta niin en lupaa vastata mitään kaunista. Eilen rupesin vihdoin toimiin ja pyöräytin huivin pesukoneen huuhtelu-linkous -ohjelman läpi ja kaivoin pingoitusraudat esille (ensimmäinen kerta niillekin).

Icarus has been finished for some time now. I got more yarn from a friendly fellow raveller so that I didn't have to throw a fit when I ran out of yarn the second time. The yarn I got was not the same shade, it was more yellow, but you can't really tell that the last two rows are knit with slightly different colour. And if someone points that out I might say something rude back. Anyhow, I finally put the thing trough the rinse-spin cycle yesterday and dug out the blocking wires (first time for them too).

Hieman myöhemmin tilanne oli tämä. Käytin rautoja T-tyyliin, eli päällä ja keskellä ja tökin kärjet yksitellen mattoon. Toimi hyvin ja oli nopeata. Matto on edelleen kokoa 120x180, joten ihan sopuisan kokoinen huivi tuli, arviolta 170 cm leveä ja noin 100 cm korkea. Tänään voisi yrittää ottaa poseerauskuvia ulkona.

Slightly later the situation was this. I used the blocking wires in T-form, that is on the top and in the center and pinned the points individually to the rug. The size of the rug is 180 cm x 120 cm so I'd say the scarf came about 170 cm wide and 100 cm tall. Not a bad size. Hopefully I'll get some "in action"-photos taken today.

Joku kävi eilen Anttilassa ja osti neljä kerää lankaa. Coralloa ovat muutkin ostaneet ja ostinpa sitten minäkin, kaksi vihreää ja kaksi harmaata. Harmaassa olin kaupassa huomaavinani jotain pientä meleerausta, mutta ei se näin kotioloissa siltä näytä. Mutta, edullista sukkalankaa jokatapauksessa, jos tekee mieli esim. palmikkosukkaa tai muuta.

Someone went to Anttila yesterday and bought four skeins of yarn. Other people have bought Corallo and now I have it too, two in pale green and two in grey. I thought I saw some small variegation in the grey one but now that I look at it I don't. But, it's cheap yarn and suitable for socks. Patterns should come out nicely since the colours are quite light.

Palapelejä - Puzzles

Bulla on duha. Ja aivot tukossa. Joten kovin vaativaa neulematematiikkaa ei täällä nyt voi harrastaa. Mutta tällaisia palapelin palasia on neulekonekurssilta putkahtanut. Tässä on kahden kerran satoa. Tosin sillä ensimmäisellä kerralla taisin tehdä myös pari suikaletta ja paikallistaa aiemmin tehdyt kaavat.

Tästä pitäisi tulla bolero. En vielä tiedä mitä teen reunoille, joten siksi niitä komistavat vaaleat reunukset. Vielä puuttuu yksi etukappale, sitten pääsee liitoshommiin. Etukappale ja hihapyöriöt vaikuttavat kovin pitkiltä, mutta koska sain ne valmiiksi tänään, luotan siihen että ne vielä lyhenevät hieman jahka pääsevät rentoutumaan. Itsepetos - mikä ihana tekosyy.

I have a runny nose. And its affecting my brains also, so I won't be doing any higher knitting math here for a while. But I've got a few pieces of a puzzle that I finished at machine knitting class. Here's what I've managed to make in two sessions. Though, part of the first one was spent knitting strips and trying to locate the pattern to this bolero. I've made it last year and it was hiding in one of my usb sticks.

So, as I said this should become a bolero. I'm not sure yet what to do with the edges so I started them with waste yarn. I'm missing a front piece and then it's time to put this particular puzzle together. The front piece and the top parts of sleeves look a bit long, but since I finished all today I'm hoping they will shorten once they rest a bit. Ah, denial etc.

Olen virkkaillut raitahuivia hiljakseen kokoon ja tänään höyrytin keskeneräisen huivin. Yhteenliitettynä on nyt melkein kuusi kaitaletta (yksi vaati vielä hieman virkkausta) ja jäljellä on kolme kaitaletta. Luulen että teen muutaman lisää, koska reunimmaiset kaitaleet vetävät kuitenkin enemmän tai vähemmän rullalle. Leveyttä tuolla on nyt sellaiset 20 senttiä. Mutta olen ihan tyytyväinen, ideani toimii ja se jopa näyttää hyvälle.

I've slowly crocheted my strips together. It starts to look like a scarf and I took it to class today to give it a good steaming. I've almost joined together six strips so far (one seam requires a bit more crocheting) and I've got three left. I think I should make a few more, for the ones on the edge will undoubtably curl with use. It's about 20 cm wide now. But I'm quite happy for my idea seems to work and it looks nice too.

Kevätsiivousta osa II - Spring cleaning part II

Edellisen osan postauksesta on myymättä vielä RYC Cashsoftit. Tosin myönnän että näin kesää vasten villalangan ostaminen on hieman outoa, mutta jos tästä tulee yhtään samanlainen kuin viime vuodesta niin voipi villalangalle olla tarvetta. Ja ainahan voin tuota marinoida vielä hetken varastoissa.

Ihmeen vähän löysin kuitenkin sellaista jolla olisi tarve lähteä muualle. Pari kätköä taitaa kyllä olla vielä perkaamatta. Sitten löytyy epämääräisiä loppuja joista en tiedä mitä tekisi. Ehkä niitä voisi pussittaa sekalangoiksi kirpparille jahka ystävän tytön baby born on vaatetettu.

From my last posting all that is left for sale is the RYC Cashsoft. Though I admit that the thought of buying wool this close to summer may feel odd but if this year is anything like last then wool is not a bad idea. And I can always marinate the yarns in my stash a bit more.

I was surprised I didn't find that much yarn I wanted to de-stash. I have a couple of places left to clean, I think. Then I have a bag of odds and ends that I don't know what to do with. Maybe I can bag them as mixed bags to sell at a thrift sale after I've made enough clothes for a friend's daughter's baby born -doll.

Mutta nyt olisi tarjolla kolme kerää Rowanin Linen Drape-lankaa valkoisena. Lanka on 100% pellavaa ja sen tekeminen on lopetettu jo joskus vuonna yksi ja kaksi jälkeen nakkisodan. Mutta kolme kerää löytyisi, noista nyt jotain voisi pyytää, vaikka 6€+ postit. Kerät ovat iskemättömiä mutta en ole varma onko kolmannessa tallella vyötettä. Ne kun lähtevät tuon muotoisista keristä helposti irti.

Viron villaa 300g vyyhti puna-lilasävyistä. Olen tehnyt samaisesta väristä huivin. Luulin että minulla olisi tuota kaksi vyyhtiä, mutta ilmeisesti sama lanka vaan tuli vastaan niin usein että luulin sitä olevan enemmän. Hintana tuossa näyttää olevan 114 EEK, eli jos saisin sen saman, 7€ + pk niin tyytyväinen olisin. EDIT: vironvillat myyty.

Siinäpä ne nyt tältä erää, katsotaan taas jos vielä jotain tulee vastaan.

Edit: hetipä tuli...eli kaksi vyyhtiä Debbie Blissin Maya-lankaa, 100% villaa.
Minulla on näitä kaksi vyyhtiä, molemmat erivärisiä. Kuva täällä. Myös tämän langan valmistus lopetettu. Myyntikoko oli periaatteessa 100 g/ vyyhti, mutta punertavampi on noin 75 g ja tummempi 112 g. Iskemätöntä lankaa, vaikka vyyhdit hävinneet ja molemmista on kadonnut laput (toisessa tosin ei ollut ostaessakaan), joten värikoodeista ei tietoa. Hintapyyntö 5€/vyyhti (+pk).

Neulontarintamalta kuuluu uutta. Tein mallitilkun Rowanin Lenpur Linenistä eilen, kastelin sen ja laitoin kuivumaan. Ja kah, se venähti ihan kunnolla. Ennen pesua oli tiheys luokkaa 18.5 s x 30 krs ja nyt se on 16 x 27. Puikot 4 mm. Ilmeisesti jos haluan päästä tavoitetiheyteen (22 x 36) minun pitää valita aika paljon pienemmät puikot. Voisi kokeilla kolmosilla seuraavaksi. Ja neuloa sitten sovellettuna jos ei muuten onnistu.

And there's something new on the knitting front. I made a swatch from Rowan Lenpur Linen, soaked it and laid it down to dry. And it grew, somewhat. Before soaking I had a gauge of 18.5 sts x 30 rows and now I have 16 x 27. I knit the swatch on 4 mm needles. So if I want to get gauge (22 x 36) I should go lower. I think I'll try 3 mm needles and if that doesn't work I'll knit with them anyway.

Kevätsiivousta - Spring cleaning

Lankavaraston kevätsiivous on meneillään ja uutta kotia kaipaisivat ainakin seuraavat langat:

100% villaa, suhteellisen paksua, ehkä luokkaa lopi. Yhteensä kilo, mielellään myisin kaikki samassa erässä. Tummanruskea-kirjavaa on eniten, sitten löytyy vyyhti luonnonvalkoista ja harmaanvalkoista. Nämä etsivät uutta kotia kun en kaipaa ulkovillapaitaa ja mokomat ovat marinoituneet varastossa jo pitkään. EDIT: villalangat myyty.

Knit Picks Shimmer (70% alpakka, 20% silkki) väriä Flower Garden, 3 vyyhtiä. Pinkkiä, purppuraa, vaaleanpunaista. Tämäkin on marinoitunut koska taitaa olla hieman liian vaaleanpunaista minulle. EDIT: Shimmerit varattu.

Novitan Oliviaa (70% bambu, 30% polyesteri) beessinä 10 kerää. Minulla oli myös vihreää, siitä sain kauniin puseron mutta beessi - ei minun värini, mikä lie tilapäinen mielenhäiriö sai moisen ostamaan. EDIT: Bambut menneet.

Rowanin Ryc Cashsoft DK (57% merino, 33% mikrokuitu, 10% cashmir), 15 kerää, väriä Madame. Yhtä keristä on hieman koeneulottu, muut iskemättömiä. Nämä lähtevät hintaan 50€ (+ mahd. pk).

Punaista ja vihreää - Red and green

Eilen tuli ensimmäisen lomapäivän kunniaksi hortoiltua kaupungilla oikein urakalla. Aamu alkoi aamiaistapaamisella (Krullassa on maittava aamiainen), josta poikkesin tarkastamaan Fiinaneuleen uuden sijainnin. Sieltä menin Lauttasaareen hakemaan lankojani (kengistä lankaa, ei paha diili), takaisin kaupunkiin ja salille. Minulla on Elixian vapaa liikkuvuus-kortti ja kävin ensimmäistä kertaa Alexiumissa. En hirveästi pitänyt salista, se oli liian sokkeloinen. Pitänee joskus käydä testaamassa ryhmäliikuntatunnit jos sattuu sopivasti. Pois kaupan ja ystävän kautta ja siinähän se päivä sujuvasti menikin. Mutta nyt on uutta lankaa ja pingoitusraudat.

Yesterday was the first day of my winter holiday and I spent it around town. First I met a friend for breakfast (Krulla has a nice buffet), from there I went to check out the new store of Fiinaneule. Then I went to Lauttasaari to get my yarns (yarn from shoes, not a bad trade), back to town and to gym. I have a membership where I can use all Elixia's gyms and I haven't been to the one at Helsinki center before so I went there. I did not like the gym of that place that much for the layout was confusing, it was in two floors and there were many small rooms. Though I might try their group excercises if I'm in the neighbourhood. I went home via a frend and then the day was well on its way. But now I have new yarn and a blocking kit.

Kengät muuttuivat kasaksi Novitan uutta Luxus Wave-lankaa. Värit langassa ovat kovin keväisiä ja haaleita, paitsi musta ja tämä haaleahko punaoranssi. Päädyin punaiseen koska väri on aika kiva ja mustaa on penseätä neuloa. Koostumus on 81% viskoosia, 19% pellavaa, passeli kesäneuleelle siis. Nyt vaan pitäisi miettiä mitä tästä tekee.

I swapped my shoes for a pile of yarn, Novita Luxus Wave that is. The colours of the yarn are in general quite summery (and pale) except for black and this faded-looking orangey red. I chose the red because it's quite a pretty colour and I do not like knitting with black yarns that much. The yarn is quite shiny and slick, it's made of 81% viscose and 19% linen, so it should be good for something light and summery. Now I just have to think what that would be.

Pääsiäisen kunniaksi jotain vihreätä. Olen hissukseen virkkaillut yhteen koneella tekemiäni luiruja. Idea näyttää toimivan. Tällä hetkellä tuntuu siltä että voisin tarvita muutaman luirun lisää, mutta katsotaan sitten kun olen kiinnittänyt kaikki. Punaliloja luiruja on vain yksi, se piristää mielestäni kivasti vihreä-ruskeaa maisemaa eikä niitä enempää tarvitakaan.

And now something green for Easter. I've slowly crocheted together the thin strips I made with a machine. My idea seems to work and looks quite nice. Though I think I might need a couple of more strips but I'll wait until I've attached all the strips together. I only have one of those magenta ones but I don't think I need more for it cheers up the green-brown scheme quite nicely.

Eteen- ja taaksepäin - Forwards and backwards

Olen neulonut, sekä eteen- että taaksepäin. Eteenpäin ovat edistyneet Opera Fichu, kirjasta Victorian Lace Today (Amazon-linkki). Kaipailin pientä peitettä hihattomaan toppi-hameyhdistelmään ja tästä tulee toivottavasti sellainen. Rakenne on ainakin mielenkiintoinen, ensin neulotaan keskiosa ja sen ympärille reunapitsi ja sitten taitellaan ja neulotaan nauhoja ja, no, siitä tulee tuollainen olkapäähörhelö. Lankana musta Wetterhoffin Silvia.

I've knitted forwards and backwards. Forwards have progressed the above Opera Fichu from Victorian Lace Today (Amazon-link). I have this sleeveless top-skirt thingy that needs something to keep the shoulders warm and hopefully this will be that something. The construction of this piece is certainly interesting: first you knit the center piece, then the edging around it and then you fold it a bit and make the ties. And lo, you have a shoulder thingy. I'm using black silk-wool for this.

Eteenpäin ovat edenneet myös isot sukat. Niin edenneet että ne ovat jo valmiit, niitä on pidetty ja ne on jopa pesty kerran. Hankalasti kuvattavaa harmaa-vihreätä lankaa joka valmiina muistuttaa kovasti maastokuosia ja koossa 46. 2 mm puikoilla. Kärjestä alkaen. Kesti. Kauan.

Mutta niistä tuli ihan sopivat, päällä ribbiä ja vartta tehty niin paljon kuin kerästä riitti (piti purkaa toisesta pari kerrosta jotta sain saman pituiset varret ilman että täytyi aloittaa uusi vyyhti). Leventelin varressa pariin otteeseen jotta niissä oli tarpeeksi tilaa. Lanka oli Trekking Hand Artin väriä Irland, yksi vyyhti meni. Toinen odottaa ja muotoutunee joskus toisiksi sukiksi.

Forward has progressed also big socks. So far that they're all done, worn and even washed once. And they're made from a very hard to photograph grey-green yarn. Toe-up. Size EU46. With 2 mm needles. Took. Ages.

But they fit and I think they look quite nice. There's rib on the top of the foot and also at the cuff. I knit as far as the yarn took me (though I had to rip about two rows from the other one to get same length for both socks without having to start a new skein) and I increased on couple of places at the cuff so as to make them fit better. I used Trekking's Hand Art in Irland and I used one skein of it. I have another one waiting and some day it'll become a pair of socks too.

Takaisinpäin olen päässyt Hiljassa. En kiinnittänyt tarpeeksi huomiota neuletiheyteen ja vaihtaessani pyöröstä tasaan yläosasta tuli löysempi ja innokkaan pitämisen seurauksena se lörpsähti liikaa ja hiha-aukoista tuli isot. Koska kuitenkin pidän (ja pidin) liiviä, niin sain vihdoinkin purettua sen kaula-aukon alkuun astija kasteltua langat. Maitolanka käyttäytyy kuitenkin kovin puuvillamaisesti ja oli innokkaasti kiharoilla runsaasta kastelemisesta huolimatta. Siiispä käärin sitä apuvälineiden ympärille. Jatkan liivin loppuun jahka lanka kuivuu.

Backwards I've gone on Hilja. Because I did not pay enough attention to the gauge the top part after switching from round to flat ended up too loose. And as a result of that the sleeve openings became quite big after a while. And since I do like the vest and would like to continue wearing it with slightly smaller openings I finally ripped it back to the beginning of the V. The milk yarn behaves very much like cotton and wanted to stay curly despite all the soaking. So I used some props to help me keep it straight. And I will re-do the vest once the yarn is dry.

Alkutekijöiksi on sen sijaan päätynyt useampikin tuotos. Tässä on epäonnista neulekonetunikaa (kaksi takaosaa), yksi koneella tehty huivinalku (liian paksu), paidanalku (liian iso) ja viimeisimpänä muttei vähäisimpänä Rogue. Totesin että kun se ei ollut liikahtanut valmiiseen päin yli vuoteen, niin tuskin se siitä enää etenee. Pidän kyllä mallista mutta se olisi vaatinut muotoiluja selkään, omani pussitti ikävästi vaikka muuten yritinkin tehdä tyköistuvaa kokoa. Ei se aina vaan onnistu.

Even more backwards progressed these. Here you can find my unlucky machine knit class sweater (two back pieces), a machine knit third of a scarf (too thick), one start of a sweater (too big) and last but not least Rogue. I decided to rip it since I haven't done anything for it in over a year and I doubt that I will. I do like the pattern but mine would have needed some back shaping for it bagged there unflatteringly even though I chose a smallish size. Well, you can't succeed every time.

En ole hirveästi laitellut tänne kuvia neulekonekurssin tekosista keskeneräisinä. Yksi syy on se, etten useinkaan muista ottaa kameraa mukaan kurssille, saati sitten ehdi ottaa kuvia siellä, mutta toinen syy on se että ne ovat mielestäni tylsiä. Koneesta roikkuva neuletyö ei ole mitenkään kuvauksellinen ja ennen höyrytystä palat ovat vielä niin kippurassa ettei niistä saa mitään selvääkään.

I have not much shown you photos of what I've been up to at the machine knit class. One reason is that I seldom remember to take a camera with me to the class, nor would I have time for the photos anyway. And another reason is that I think they are very boring. A knit hanging from a machine is not very photogenic and before a good steaming the pieces are so curly there's not much to see.

Mutta tässä on kertomus siitä miten kaikki ei aina suju vaikka kuinka yrittäisi. Sain idean jo syksyllä, vahingossa, kun kokeilin mielenkiintoisen näköistä mallineuletta enkä sitten lukenut ohjeita tarkkaan. Päädyin kuitenkin käyttämään silkkivillan sijaan muinoin ystävämyynnistä hamstraamaani Viking-lankaa. Tein mallitilkkuja innokkaasti ja vaikka Vikingistä ei tullutkaan yhtä sievän näköistä kuin silkkivillasta niin tuli siitäkin kaunista ja onhan varastolankojen käyttö aina suotavaa. Suunnittelin ja piirsin kaavoja. Siitä tulisi neulepaita jonka yläosa olisi mallineuletta hieman rintojen alle ja siitä alaspäin sileää pudotetuilla silmukoilla. Mallitilkun mukaan rullautuvuus olisi hallittavissa höyrytyksen avulla ja eikun töihin. Valmiissa kappaleessa sileän osuus oli kuitenkin niin suurta että se rullautui vaikka sitä olisi höyryttänyt kuinka ja suorassa pysymiseen olisi tarvittu kunnon painoja. Siispä purkuun ja idea B käyttöön. Tekisinkin alaosan joustimena. Ja eikun taas mallitilkkua ja hyvältä näyttää. Taas takaosan kimppuun. Näyttää hyvältä siihen asti kunnes pudotettuja silmukoita pitää hieman avittaa. Ja sitten tapahtuu näin - pudotetun viereinen silmukka leviää paikoin aika reilusti. Puhumattakaan siitä että hiha-aukon kohdalla on tapahtunut jotain outoa. Havaitsin saman ilmiön jo ensimmäisessä kappaleessa mutta ajattelin sen johtuvan vain siitä että unohdin neuloa jokusen kerroksen mutta tällä kertaa olin tarkkana ja hiha-aukko on siltikin liian lyhyt. Luultavasti mallineule vetää kasaan isommassa pinnassa eri tavalla kuin mitä mallitilkun perusteella näytti. Viisas luovutti tässä vaiheessa ja miettii Viking-langalle muuta käyttöä. Joustinneule näyttää siinä todella hyvältä, ehkä siitä voisi saada yksinkertaisen joustinneuletakin. Mutta ei todellakaan nyt heti.

But here's a story of how things don't always turn out fine no matter how well you plan ahead. I had the idea last autumn by mistake when I was trying a nice-looking pattern and neglected to read the instructions properly. I got a nice swatch with a slightly lace-like bottom with dropped stitches. But instead of silk wool I decided to use this Viking yarn I had in my stash. I did some swatches and even though the Viking did not behave as nicely as the silk wool it was still quite pretty and it is always good to use what's in ones stash. So I planned and made the pattern. It was to become a sweater with the pattern on top and below the breasts it would be stockinette with dropped stitches so it would widen a bit. For even though it would be stockinette it seemed that the curling would be manageable with proper steaming. So I did the back piece. And I was wrong about the curling. For in the finished piece there was so much stockinette that no matter how much I steamed it still curled and would have required weights on the edge to keep it straight. So I ripped it and changed to option B. Which was to have ribbing on the bottom. Swatches again and the dropped stitches looked even better with ribbing. And I did another back piece. Things looked well until the point where I had to help the dropping stitches by hand. The above happened: the stitches next to the ones being dropped came loose and looked horrible. Not to mention what had happened on the sleeve opening. For I noticed on the first piece that they looked somewhat short but I thought I had just neglected to knit some rows for there had been distractions at the time. But no, this time I was sure I had knit all that my pattern said. So either the stitch pattern behaved differently in a larger piece than it had done in my swatch or I had made an error while making the pattern. No matter, a wise person knows when to quit and this was the time. I'll have to think of some other use for the yarn, ribbing comes out beautifully crisp in it so maybe a simple ribbed cardi. But not this spring, thank you very much.

Siirryin seuraavaan ideaani. Näistä pitkistä suikaleista pitäisi tulla huivi. Tässä on keväänvihreää, tummaa ruskeata ja yksi musta. Lankana ohut Titan Woolin merino. Mustia piti tulla enemmän mutta menetin hermoni täysin kun toista suikaletta tehdessä lanka katkesi ainakin kolmesti ja silmukoita tippui. Jos olet ikinä nostellut silmukoita ohuesta langasta tehdystä neuleesta niin tiedät mitä tarkoitan. Musta käyttäytyi todella poikkeavasti neulottaessa mutta kuulemma sitä tehdään usein värjäämällä päälle, joten se voi siksikin olla heikompaa. Tähän tarvitsee kyllä vielä jonkin kolmannen värin, tarjolla olisi vaaleaa lilaa tai tummempaa punalilaa.

So I moved on to my next ideas. These long stockinette stitch pieces are supposed to become a scarf. Here I have springy green, very dark brown and one black piece. I used thin Titan Wool merino. I was planning on knitting more blacks but I totally lost my patience when while I was knitting the second black the yarn snapped about three times. And if you've ever had to pick up stitches from a piece knit with a very thin yarn you know what I mean. So, no more black. The black yarn behaved quite differently from the other colours. It wasn't nearly as strong. I don't think that would have been a problem with hand knitting but it sure was with machine knitting. I heard that they make black by overdying so it might be not as strong because of it. But, I will need a third colour. The choises are between pale violet and darker reddish purple.

Kolmisen viikkoa sitten perjantaina olo oli aika väsy ja nuutunut ja ajattelin pullollisen cokista piristävän. Eikun automaatille pullon hakuun. Hieman potutti kun mokoma ei antanutkaan kylmää limupulloa vaan pölli rahat. Soitto laitteen kyljessä olevaan numeroon ja lupasivat laittaa korvaavan tuotteen postitse. No, sen hetken cokishimoon lupaus ei tuonut apua ja ensiharmituksen jälkeen hieman unohdinkin koko asian. Mitään ei sitten kuulunut ja ajattelin heidänkin unohtaneen. Kunnes viime viikolla tuli pakettikortti. Postista löytyi sievä paketti. Hieman naureskelin kuljettaessani sitä kotiin.

About three weeks ago on a Friday afternoon at work I was feeling quite tired and thought that a bottle of coke would wake me up a bit. So I went to the nearest wending machine and was more than a little miffed when the darned thing refused to give out the goods but kept my money. I called the number listed on the device and they promised to send me a replacement by mail. Which was all good and well but didn't really do anything about my lust for cool refreshment at the moment. So I forgot about it a bit and since nothing came by post I thought they'd forgot about it too until I got a note from the post office saying that they had a package for me. So I went to pick it up and got this. I was mildly amused when I brought it home.

Inside I found two bottles instead of one which was very nice. Next time: new scarf and a pair of socks.

Asioita mielessä - Things on my mind

On eräs asia joka on askarruttanut mieltäni aina silloin tällöin. Se liittyy typeryyteen ja niiden syihin. Jos selittäisin. Teen mallitilkkuja. Joskus jopa pesen ne. Ja mittaan ne ennen ja jälkeen pesun. Välillä kokeilen erilaisia mallineuleita ja katson miltä ne näyttävät neulottuna.

There's this one thing that's been on my mind on and off for a while. It's to do with stupidity and the reasons of it. Let me explain. I do swatches. Sometimes I even wash them. And I measure them before and after washing. Sometimes there's a noticeable difference and sometimes not. I try out different patterns to see what looks nice and what doesn't.

I have some notebooks that I've gotten specifically for making notes about my knitting in them. The pink one is not really me but it stayed with me after I decided it was too heavy to send to foreign lands by post (a swap thing). But at least it is highly visible and I can usually find it. But instead of using them for what I got them for...

...teen muistiinpanojani aika usein muualle. Kuten printattujen (ja käytettyjen) ohjepapereiden takapuolelle, käytettyihin kirjekuoriin, mainoksiin tai muuhun mitä nyt sattuu löytymään. Jos nyt teen mitään muistiinpanoja vaan päätän luottaa mahtavaan muistiini (no ihan niin, totta kai muistan vielä kahden kuukauden kuluttua mitä puikkoja käytin minkäkin mallitilkun tekemiseen, saati sitten kahden päivän). Tätä olen mietiskellyt, että miksi näin. Onko tämä laajempikin ongelma vai onko se vain minun? Miksi on neuloja typerä?

...I tend to use other things, like backs of printed patterns, empty envelopes and even flyers and other advertisement material. If I bother to make them at all and not rely on my memory (yeah, right, like anyone can remember what needles they used for that swatch two months later, or even two days). And I've wondered why that is. Is this a widespread problem or is it just me? Why is a knitter stupid?

Ravelryvaihto - Ravelry exchange

Suomalaisten neulojien Ravelry-vaihto on meneillään ja minäkin olen siinä. Sain sähköpostitse seurantanumeron jo viime keskiviikkona, mutta paketti kotiutui minulle vasta perjantaina. Sisältä löytyi kaikkea kivaa. Nippu ohjeita, suklaata (syöty jo kaikki, hyvää oli), teekukkia, kauniisti paketoituja pehmeitä paketteja (palkeenkieli johtui omasta peukalosta) ja kirje vihjeellä.

The Ravelry swap of Finnish knitters is going on and I'm taking part in it too. I got the tracking code for the package from my pal last Wednesday but I got the package home on Friday evening. There were all kinds of goodies inside: some patterns, chocolate (ate all already, they were good), tea flowers, cute wrapped packages (the hole was made by my clumsy fingers) and a letter with hints.

Paketeistä löytyi lankaa, kolme kerää Novitan Luxus Cottonia luonnonvalkeana ja kolme vyyhtiä Shibuiknitsin sukkalankaa väriä Peony. Cotton tuntuu mukavalle ja Peonyn väri on todella kaunis. Mukana tulleet ohjeet ovat sellaisia jotka sopisivat tuolle langalle. Katsotaan nyt mitä syntyy. Ehkä voisin tehdä vaikka...sukat! Kiitoksia Heidis!

And inside the packets I found yarn. Three balls of Novita Luxus Cotton and three skeins of ShibuiKnits sock in Peony. The cotton yarn feels really nice and so does the Shibui sock. Peony is such a lovely colour. The patterns I got in the package are such that I could make them with this yarn. It is really nice and maybe I could do...well, socks! Thank you very much, Heidis!

Ufojen selätystä - Dealing with the ufos

Viime viikko oli aika rankka, ja tänään en jaksanutkaan tehdä muuta kuin tuijottaa digiboksilta ohjelmia ja käsitellä ufoja. Ensimmäisenä vanhin: Rosemoor. Sain tämän jo vuosi sitten keväällä melkein valmiiksi, mutta siihen se jäi. Yksi syy hitailuun oli siinä, että pelkäsin langan loppuvan kesken reunuksen neulomista. Sain kyllä reunuksen juuri ja juuri neulottua mutta kietaisunauhoiksi ostin mustaa samettinauhaa kun lankaa ei vaan enää ole. Seuraavaksi pitää vielä päätellä jokunen langanpää ja kiinnittää se nauha. Ehkä tätä voisi vielä pitää tänä talvena?

Last week was quite taxing and I haven't had energy to do anything else today than look at stuff from the digibox hard drive and tackle with ufos. The oldest one first: Rosemoor. I got this almost finished last spring but I was stuck with knitting the edge piece. I was afraid that I'd run out of yarn and not be able to finish the cardi. Well, I had enough yarn to knit the cabled edging, just, but there was no yarn left to do the wrap ties. I solved that by bying some black velvet ribbon that should do the trick. Now I have to weave in a few ends and sew on the tie and its finally done. Maybe I get a chance to wear it this winter at least once.

Seuraavana on vuorossa työ syksyn neulekonekurssilta: ohut yksinkertainen kashmirpaita. Ohut tarkoittaa myös paljon saumanompeluita, ja se onkin ollut mukana jokusessa neuletapaamisessa. Seurassa saumojen ompelu on mukavampaa. Malli on kovin yksinkertainen, v-aukko, 3/4-hihat ja pientä pintaneuletta. Lankaa oli vain kartion verran (n. 150 g) joten kikkailuun ei ollut kauheasti varaa mutta halusin jotain muuta kuin pelkkää sileää. Päädyin tähän yksinkertaiseen mallineuleeseen jossa kuviopuoli muodostuu nurjalle puolelle. Tämä aiheuttaa sen että reunat rullautuvat sisään päin. Kaula-aukkoon ja helmaan tulee erillinen kaitale, joka rullautuu ulospäin ja reunoista pitäisi tulla siistit. Kaula-aukon reunuksen ompelu on meneillään.

Next I have the piece I made last autumn at the knitting machine class. A very simple thin cashmere sweater. Thin means also lots of seaming so I've sown it together at knit meets. It's nicer to do when there's company for talking I can do at the same time but not tv. The style is very simple for I had only one cone (~150 g) of yarn and I couldn't do complicated or I'd run out of yarn. But I wanted something else than just stockinette stitch so I chose this tuck stitch pattern where the right side is the wrong side (sort of). This causes the edges to roll inwards. So I'm going to attach edges to the neck and hem that roll outwards and this should in theory make the edges nice and neat. I'm sewing in the neck edging now.

Puserossa on hihatkin mutta ne eivät vielä ole kiinni. Kiinnityksen jälkeen pusero kaipaa kunnon pesua, koska Colourmartin langat ovat teollisia ja siksi öljyttyjä. Pesu tuo kashmirin pehmeyden oikeuksiinsa ja jahka hieman lämpenee uskon nauttivani viininpunaisesta unelmastani.

The sweater has sleeves too but they are not yet attached. After I've done that the sweater needs a good wash for Colourmart's yarns are industrial and oiled. Washing brings out the softness and after it warms up a bit I believe I'll really enjoy my wine-coloured softness.

Kävin eilen kaupungilla ja myös Menitassa enkä ostanut sieltä yhtään lankaa. Mutta toisaalta ehkä vähän... Stockmannilta mukaan tarttui 10 kerää Rowanin Lenpur Linen-lankaa. Väri on kaunis tumma vedensininen, nimeltä Lagoon. Olen ilmiselvästi sinisessä vaiheessa.

I went to the city yesterday and also to a yarn shop and came out without buying anything. However, I did not come home without yarn for I got these from Stockmann. 10 balls of Rowan Lenpur linen. Lovely blue shade called Lagoon. I'm apparently well into a blue phase.

Värikästä viikonloppua - A colourfur weekend

En mennyt Wanhan sataman Kädentaitomessuille viime viikonloppuna, koska lanka löytää tänne muutenkin. Ensin tänne saapuivat jenkeistä tilaamani Noro Kureyon Sock-langat. Lupasin tehdä liivin myös kummilleni ja kun totesin että 200 g lankaa riitti täpärästi äitini liiviin niin sitä ei ole tarpeeksi pidempään ja löysempään versioon. Kummini on kova pinkin ystävä joten tästä saatiin aika win-win tilanne aikaiseksi: pidän itse kummini ostaman langan (samaa kuin mitä äidin liivissä, aika minun värejä myös) ja tilasin kummille pinkkiä. Tämän pitäisi riittää liiviin, toivottavasti. Väri on nimittäin lopetettu ja lisää voi olla hankala saada.

I did not go to the craft fair in Helsinki last weekend for the yarn seems to find its way here quite well. First I got the Noro Kureyon Sock yarns I ordered from the States. I promised to make a vest for my god-mother too and when I discovered that 200 g makes one that fits my mom it is not enough for a longer and looser version. So, I had to get more yarn. And since my god-mother is a big fan of pink this resulted in a win-win situation for both of us: I will keep the yarn she got for the vest (two balls of the same yarn as my mom, which I like too) and I will order more in a pink colourway. This should be enough. And this colour seems to be discontinued too.

Sitten lähti neulojatuttuja Tallinnaan. Kaukotilasin lankaa...kun se on niin kaunista petroolia paksuhkoa alpakkaa. Hassusti ihan samaa väriä kuin Dropsin Alpacassa. Tein siitä kietaisutakin muinoin.

Then some knit-friends went to Tallinn and I asked for some yarn. For it is such a lovely colour and a bit thicker alpaca yarn. Funnily enough it's the exact same colour as in Drops Alpaca. I made a wrap-around cardi from it a while back.

Sitten tuli hieno kukka, eikun lankakimppu. Olen jo jonkin aikaa silmäillyt Scarf Style-kirjassa olevaa Color on Color-huivia. Siinä on minuun mukavasti vetoavaa hauskuutta ja epäsymmetriaa. Mutta ei huvittanut ostaa miljoonaa (tai melkein) tokkaa kirjoneulelankaa ja riipiä siitä säikeitä erikseen (kirjassa käsketään erottamaan kolmisäikeisestä langasta kaksi ja neulomaan niillä). Puhumattakaan siitä pääteltävien langanpäiden määrästä. Niinpä se on jäänyt, kunnes Ravelryn suosiollisella avustuksella selvisi että suunnittelija Kathryn Alexander myy huiviin lankapaketteja. Pistinkin kyselyn menemään ja tiedustelin myös mahdollisista värivaihtoehdoista. Huivin karkkivärimaailma kun ei ole oikein minua. Vaikka hän ei normaalisti teekään custom-kittejä niin hän tarjoutui tekemään minulle oman sekoituksen. Olen oikein tyytyväinen saamiini väreihin. Niihin kaikkiin 50+ kappaleeseen. I have had my eye on the Color on color scarf from Scarf Style for a while now. It has that kind of funny asymmetry that appeals to me. But buying zillion (well, almost) small skeins of tapestry wool and ripping apart the plies and knitting with two of them however did not. Not to mention all the ends to be woven in. So it has remained to be just a nice thing but with the aid of Ravelry I learned that the designer, Kathryn Alexander sells yarn kits for the scarf. So, I sent her email inquiring about possible colours - for the candy-like colours of the scarf in the book are not really me. She doesn't normally do custom dyes but she offered to tweak the kit more to my colours. And this is what I got. I'm more than pleased with the colours I got, all 50+ of them. Too bad I can't get right down to knitting it for I have to finish a pair of canoes socks for my husband.

Olen neulonut myös neuletakkia Garnstudion ohjeella. Se on nyt kyllä vähän tauolla.

I've also knit a cable cardi from a Garnstudio pattern. It's taking a bit of a break now though.
