Värjäystä, osa 2 - Dyeing, part 2

Tuossa vähän aikaa sitten sain valmiiksi puseron jota värjäilin aika epäonnistuneesti. Yritin poistaa väriä Vanishin Oxi Action geelillä, mutta usean tunnin liottaminen ei tehnyt oikeastaan mitään. Väri oli ehkä hieman haalistunut, mutta V:n mallinen vaalea jälki etukappaleessa näkyi edelleen selvästi ja myöskin hihojen värirajat. Seuraavaksi kokeilin Dr. Beckmannin värjäytymien poistajaa. Se haisi kauhealle, mutta tehosi kyllä hyvin. Liottelin puseroa ämpärissä jokusen tunnin ja tuloksena olikin taas haaleansininen mutta tasavärinen pusero.

Päätin sitten värjätä puseron koneessa, vaikka koneväriä ei silkille suositeltukaan, mutta puuvilla taas soveltuu konevärjäykseen hyvin. Värjäys onnistui, mutta ei siitä nytkään täysin tasaista tullut. Tosin nyt väri ei kuivauksen aikana lähtenyt vaeltelemaan joten olen tyytyväinen tähän hieman marmoroituun pintaan.

A while ago I knit a sweater which I tried to dye and it didn't go too well. I tried to remove the colour by soaking the sweater in Vanish Oxi Action gel, but after several hours of soaking there wasn't much change. The colour faded a bit but the discolorations, the light V-shape on the front and the dye-line in the sleeves, were still visible. Next I tried Dr. Beckmann Stain Removal. It stank to high heaven but did the job. After soaking for some hours I ended up with a light blue but even-coloured sweater.

At this point I was pretty much fed up with the whole sweater so I did not want to risk the hand-dyeing again. Instead I used Dylon's machine dye, even though it was not recommended for silk. Cotton was good, though. The dyeing worked, but it still came out uneven. But the colour stayed put during the drying so I'm quite happy with this marble-looking effect I got.

Kyselin maahantuojalta Transmeriltä josko he osaisivat kertoa mikä ensimmäisessä värjäyksessä meni pieleen. Heillä oli sama epäily kuin minullakin, että jostain syystä x väri ei olisi kiinnittynyt hyvin tai neuleeseen olisi jäänyt ylimääräistä väriainetta joka sitten kuivauksen aikana olisi valunut takakappaleeseen. Ja ohjeeksi antoivat huuhtelun runsaalla lämpimällä vedellä värjäyksen jälkeen ja vielä pesuainepesun lopuksi. Omituista sikäli, että yritin näin toimiakin, huuhtelin ja pesin vielä pesuaineella. Ja silti tapahtui mitä tapahtui. Toisaalta taas samaan aikaan värjäämäni langanloppu otti värin itseensä hyvin ja pysyi tasaisena. Ensi kerralla värjään kyllä langan ennen neulomista, vaikka kartiosta onkin mukavampaa neuloa.

Transmerille kyllä kiitosta nopeasta vastauksesta ja hyvästä asiakaspalvelusta. Sain mielipahaa lohduttamaan pari pussia samaa turkoosia käsiväriä. Nytpä pääsen sitten värjäämään jotain muuta turkoosiksi - toivottavasti hieman paremmin tuloksin.

I asked the importer of Dylon if they had any idea why my first dye experiment went so wrong. They suspected the same as I did, that for some reason the dye had not set or that there was excess dye that went to the bottom during the drying. And recommended that next time I rinse the fabric with plenty of warm water after dyeing and then wash it with washing detergent before drying. Funny thing is, that is pretty much what I did and still that happened. Then again the end of the yarn I dyed at the same time turned out perfectly even and fine. Next time if I want to dye yarn I'll do it before knitting, though it is nicer to knit straight off a cone.

I have to say that I got very nice service from the importer, they responded quickly and gave good customer service. I even got two packages of the same turquoise hand dye to ease my feelings of failure. Now I can dye something else turquoise - hopefully with better results.

Nälkäinen softa - The hungry sofa

Nyt kun olette ihastelleet edellisen postauksen puseroa, niin voin paljastaa että ei se mennyt ihan niinkuin piti. Tarkoituksena oli tehdä hihoistakin alaosasta mustat, mutta neulomisen jälkeen lankatilanne oli tämä. Pari hassua grammaa.

Now that you have admired the sweater in the last post I can reveal that not all went to plan. I was planning on doing the bottom part of the sleeves in black. But after knitting the situation with the yarn was this - couple of measly grams.

Sitten kerran kun olin jo päätellyt kaikki langanpäät kaivelin jotain sohvannurkasta ja löysin tämän. Sohva oli syönyt sen verran lankaa että sillä olisi saanut mustat raidat hihoihin. Mitäs sitä tällä nyt sitten tekisi?

Then after I had wowen in all the yarn ends I was digging at the sofa and trying to find something and came across this. The sofa had eaten a ball of black yarn, enough that I would have been able to make those black stripes on the sleeves. Now what shall I do with this one?

Lörppäkauluspusero - Cowlish sweater

Olen tässä koneneuloskellut lisää. Itse neulonta oli aika nopeaa, suunnittelu ja lankojen päättely taisi viedä eniten aikaa. Kuvien laatu ei päätä huimaa, kun toimin itse omana valokuvaajanani, mutta kyllä näistä saa idean.

Ostin joskus vuonna 2008 Colourmartin ebay-kaupasta 300 g satsin ohutta puuvilla-kashmiria. En enää muista mitä paksuutta tai pitoisuutta se oli, koska kyseessä oli ns. odds'n ends-satsi, eli kartiotonta kartiolankaa joka piti sitten itse keriä. Satsissa oli eniten mustaa ja petroolia, saman verran suunnilleen molempia ja lisäksi vielä hieman vaaleanvihertävää ja beessiä. Päätin jättää nuo pari viimeistä väriä käyttämättä ja tehdä puseron kahdesta ensimmäisestä. Tällainen siitä sitten tuli.

I've machine knitted some more. The knitting itself went fast and smooth, design and weaving in ends was what took most of the time. The quality of the photos is not that great, I was trying to be my own photographer and that never seems to go well. But you get the idea.

I bought sometime in 2008 a lot of thin cashmere cotton from Colourmart's ebay store. I have no idea about the thickness, yardage or percentages for it was an odd's and ends off the cone-lot. Meaning there wasn't any information with the yarn and I had to wind it myself. There were four colours, black and petrol most, about the same amount both and also a bit of green and beige. I decided to skip the last two and make a sweater out of the first two. This is what I came up with.

Yritin tehdä sellaista lörppäkauluspuseroa, mutta olisin voinut ottaa lörpemmänkin kaula-aukon. Nyt se on sellainen hieman löysä. Levensin etuosan reunoissa kainalokavennusten jälkeen yhden silmukan molemmilla puolilla joka neljäs kerros. Näin jälkikäteen ajateltuna olisin voinut lisätä joka toinenkin kerros, mutta lankaa ei jäänyt liiemmälti yli nytkään. Mutta ihan pidettävä pusero tästä tuli. Tämä kun oli kuitenkin heman harjoitusprojekti seuraavalle, niin tiedän mitä voisin tehdä toisin.

Lankaa meni kokonaiset 200 g ja neuloin kolminkertaisesta langasta. Siitä saa jonkinlaisen käsityksen langan ohuudesta. Mitäs sitä muuta...hihoissa ja kauluksessa on pienet mustat käännösreunat. Niskan takaosassa tuo reunus hieman löpsöttää, joten ajattelin sinne pujottaa hieman kuminauhaa. Mietin ensin että tekisin jonkin koristeen beigellä tuohon johonkin olkapään tienoille mutta taidankin jättää sen tuollaiseksi, simppeliksi. Ylemmässä kuvassa on ehkä hieman oikeammat värit, mutta aika hyvin se sopii tuon hameen kanssa vaikka ei ihan samaa väriä olekaan.

I tried to make a cowl neck sweater, but I could have taken a bit looser with more fabric. Now it is just slightly loose. I added one stitch on both sides of the front piece after the arm hole decreases. In retrospect I could have gone every second row but I didn't have much left of the teal as it is. But I don't mind, I think it'll get plenty of wear even as it is. This was sort of a practice project for the one I had in mind after this.

The sweater weighs a whopping 200 g and I used the yarn tripled. It gives you some kind of idea how thin the yarn is. What else...there's thin black turned edges on both sleeves and the neck. The edge turns a bit outwards on the neck so I thought I'd put some elastic cord there to tighten it up. I first thought I'd make some kind of decoration using the beige yarn somewhere around the shoulder but I think I'll just leave it as it is. Simple and elegant. The colours are a bit more correct on the upper photo. I think it goes quite well with the skirt even though they're not completely the same shade.

Alppiruusuja - Rhododendrons

Lauantaina en ollut KIPpailemassa vaan ihan muualla. Mikroaaltouuni sanoi sopimuksensa irti parisen viikkoa sitten - ei lämmennyt ruoka vaan itse mikro, joten katsoimme paremmaksi katsella uutta. Lauantaina käytiin sitten katselemassa uutta ja kävimme katselemassa vähän muutakin. Nimittäin alppiruusuja Rodopuistossa.


On Saturday I was not KIPping, but doing something else. Our microwave oven handed in its notice a few weeks ago - it did not heat the food anymore but started heating itself. So we decided it was better to go look for a replacement. I did that on Saturday but I saw something else too. In Helsinki in Haga there's a rhododendron park. The first hybrids were planted on 1975 for research purposes by the University of Helsinki.

Tuo paikka on aina ollut mielestäni jotenkin epätodellinen - korkeita kukkivia pensaita mäntymetsikön suojassa. Aikaisemmin sitä ei mielestäni edes oikein näkynyt tielle, nyt kukkien näkee pilkottavan puiden lomasta kun tarkasti katsoo.

And they've had plenty of time to grow. I've always felt the place is somehow surreal, dream-like. There's these huge flowering shrubs growing in pine forest. Earlier you couldn't even see them from the road but I think they've done some weeding and you can see the colours in the forest if you look closely.

Keltaiset ja oranssit ovat uudempia, taitavat olla vuodelta 1996. Pienempiä ovat, mutta ihan runsaskukkaisia nekin. Ei tällaisia normaalipuutarhoissa näe.

The oranges and yellows are newer, planted in 1996. So they are not as huge as the oldest ones but very nice size nonetheless. You don't see them like this in normal gardens.

This was my favourite, a nice deep fuchsia. A good time to go visit the park now, for the flowers are at their best.

Äidille ja tyttärelle - For Mother and Daughter

Blogini osoittaa lieviä omituisuuden merkkejä, mutta koska pääsen kuitenkin vielä kirjautumaan sisään niin pitää käyttää tilaisuutta hyväksi ja päivittää. Eihän sitä tiedä koska sitä käy itsellekin huonosti - tähän asti kuitenkin kommentoiminen muiden blogeihin on onnistunut kuten myös kirjautuminen blogiin.

My blog shows some signs of oddity but since I can still log on I decided to take advantage of that and update. After all, one never knows when the same thing happens that has happened to many but so far I can still comment on blogs and log into my own.

Neulepaita lilluu edelleen liemissä - Vanish auttoi kyllä paljon mutta ei neuleesta vielä ihan tasaista tullut. Nyt on vuorossa värjäytymien poistoliemi, toivottavasti huomenna pääsisi taas värjäyspuuhiin. Koska neuleet on nyt tyyliä plääh niin esittelen taas koruja. Kävin viikonloppuna vierailulla ystävällä jossa syntymäpäiviä olivat tässä kuussa viettäneet matkoilla sekä äiti että tytär. Nelivuotiaalle tein kuminauhaan kaulakorun erilaisista lasi-ja muovihelmistä. Löytyipä mukaan jokunen lasisydänkin. Sievää ja kun menossa oli prinsessavaihe niin koru päätyi heti kaulaankin.

My last knit is still stewing in its own liquids - the Vanish gel helped much but did not make the knit totally unicoloured I'm trying something else now. Hopefully I can get to dye it again tomorrow. But because my knits are a bit blah at the moment I'll show you a couple of pieces of jewellery I made. Last weekend I visited a friend of mine where both the mother and daughter celebrated their birthdays this month. For the daughter I made a necklace using elastic cord and some glass and plastic beads. I even managed to include some heart-shaped glass beads. Pretty and since the little lady was into pricesses that day the necklace got into use straight away.

Kaulakorun kaveriksi päätyi Roomasta ostettu Minni-laukku. Olisi melkein kelvannut itsellekin, hieman isommassa koossa.

With the necklace went a Minnie-bag I found in Rome. I would not have minded one myself if they had offered it in larger size.

The colours are more real in this photo. The glass beads are lovely gold-based tubes with spots of black and colour. The shop called these Picasso beads.

I finished the sweater. Look, here it is.

Koska vaaleansininen ei ole oikein minulle sopiva väri, niin se päätyi ämpäriin väripussillisen kanssa. Dylonin Bahama Blue oli värin nimi ja turkoosia pitäisi tulla.

Since pale blue is not really my colour into the bucket it went with a packet of dye. Dylon's Bahama Blue was the colour and turquoise the expected outcome.

Värjäyksen ja pesun jälkeen näytti vielä ihan hyvältä. Väristä ei tullut ihan niin voimakasta kuin miltä paketista näytti, mutta tasainen se oli siinä vaiheessa vielä. Kuivausvaiheessa tapahtui jotain - kenties kuun vaihe tai joku muu pilasi tuloksen. Koska kuten kuvasta näkee, tuli puseroon näkyville päälle taiteltujen hihojen kuva.

After the dye bath and washing everything looked ok. The colour was not as strong as I would have liked but it was nice and even. During the time it took for the sweater to get dry something happened - maybe it was the phase of the moon or maybe it was the elves, I don't know. But as you can see there's a shadow of the sleeves on the sweater from where they were folded.

Ja takapuoli puserosta on selvästi tummempi kuin etupuoli ja raja menee hihoissa. Tämän jälkeen päästelin muutaman ruman sanan ja rupesin miettimään mitä tuolle voi tehdä.

And the back of the sweater is darker than the front and the line goes through the sleeves. After noticing these things I swore and started thinking of ways to fix this.

Kloori ei käy koska lanka on puuvilla-silkkisekoitetta ja silkki ei kloorista pidä. Vetyperoksidi varmaan kävisi mutta kun löysin netistä kyselyitä sille lähinnä hampaiden kotivalkaisuun enkä vaatteiden niin en tiennyt mitä ostaisin tai kauan sen pitäisi antaa vaikuttaa. Ostin sitten Vanishin Oxy Action geeliä, jossa lilluttelin paitaa noin puoli päivää ja pesin sen sitten. Vanish-veteen irtosi kyllä sinistä ja pesun jälkeen näytti siltä että väri olisi tasaisempi, tosin hihan raitaa näytti vielä vähän näkyvän. Kuivumisen jälkeen tilanteen näkee sitten paremmin. Toiveena olisi haalistunut mutta tasavärinen neule jonka voisin vielä värjätä uudestaan.

Chlorine does not work for the yarn is a cotton/silk mix and silk does not chlorine bleach like. Hydrogen peroxide might work but I only managed to find questions about how to use it for home-made teeth whitening and not clothes so I didn't know what to buy and how long to soak. So I decided to buy a bottle of Vanish Oxy Action gel and soaked the sweater in it for half a day or so after which I washed it. Some blue dye did come off it and the vanish-water was blue and after the wash it seemed like the colour had evened out somewhat. Though it looks like the sleeve stripe is still visible. I'll know better after the sweater is fully dry. I'm hoping to get lighter but even-coloured sweater which I can re-dye.

The Salmon of Sock

Kuvittelin että olisin voinut esitellä tänään jo valmiin värjätyn puseron. Kaulus osoittautui kuitenkin oletettua hankalammaksi, tässä on menossa jo kolmas versio. Ensimmäiseen poimin silmukoita hieman liian vähän, toiseen liikaa. Toivottavasti tämä kolmas versio on sopiva.

I thought I could have showed you the finished and dyed sweater from last post but as it turned out I can't. The neck edging turned out to be trickier than I anticipated for this is the third version. For the first I picked up too few stitches, for the second too many. Hopefully this third one will be just right.

Sainpa tässä tehtyä vihdoin viimein valmiiksi sukat jotka aloitin jo vuonna 2008. Olin arveluideni kanssa oikeassa ja sukan kantapäästä tuli hieman liian pieni. Purin tekeleen ja aloitin uudestaan, hieman suuremmalla silmukkaluvulla ja puikkokoolla. Miksi vaihdoin puikot, sitä en enää muista, todennäköisesti nuo nyt sattuivat vain osumaan käsiin kun rupesin uudelleenneulontaan. Ja juu, on niitä kaksi mutta tiputin toiselle paistettua lohta ja se joutui hieman puhdistukseen. Ja ei, eivät olleet edes jalassa tuolloin.

I finally managed to finish a pair of socks I started on 2008. I gave into my unsureness and decided to rip the almost finished sock and start again with a bit larger stitch count. Also I chose a bit larger needles though I'm really not sure why I did that. Probably they just were on hand. And yes, there is another one too but unfortunately I dropped a piece of fried salmon on it and I had to clean it a bit. And no, I was not even wearing them at the time.

Odds and ends

Olisin päivittänyt jo perjantaina mutta Blogger oli huoltokatkolla joten ei onnistunut. Viikonlopun vietin itä-Suomessa ja päivitys jäi sitten kotiinpaluun jälkeiseen aikaan. Käyhän se näinkin.

Neulerintamalla olen tehnyt vain tylsää tunikaa harmaanruskeasta langasta ja en ole jaksanut sitä kuvailla - ja eipä sellainen möntti kovinkaan kuvauksellinen edes ole. Mutta samalla olen hitaasti laskeskellut mallitilkun avulla neulepaidan kaavaa koneneulontaa varten. Kohteena kuvassa oleva lanka, Colourmartin 2/9NM fingering weight puuvilla/silkkiä jota ostin joskus ebaysta halvalla 300 g kartion (kuvassa oleva ei ole enää ihan täydessä koossa). Väri on nimeltään Celeste, sellainen aika haalea vaaleansininen.

I would have updated on Friday, but Blogger was out of order and then I spent the weekend in Eastern Finland. So, update was waiting to happen after I got home, which is now.

On knitting front things have been a bit boring lately. I've knitted a shirt out of browinish grey yarn, so a really boring and unphotogenic piece. Then I've knitted a part of sock or another and slowly calculated, with the help of a swatch, a sweater pattern. The yarn I wanted to use for the pattern is in the photo above, it's Colourmart's 2/9NM fingering weight silk/cotton which I bought in a 300 g cone from ebay a while back. The colour in question is called celeste, a bit wishy-washy sky-blue.

Viikolla otin itseäni niskasta kiinni ja tein laskelmat valmiiksi. Sitten hurautin osat parissa illassa koneella valmiiksi. Tässä etu- ja takaosa kiinitettyinä toisiinsa. Reunat teen käsin, koska palmikkojen kääntäminen koneella on hieman tylsää enkä jaksanut mallitilkustella joustinta. Tähän on hihatkin, ja niihin on jo tehty reunus, mutta en ole vielä kiinnittänyt niitä vartaloon.

Koneella on kyllä kätevä tehdä kappaleita sileästä neuleesta ja kartiolangat ovat mainioita kun niistä ei tule niitä pääteltäviä langanpätkiä niin paljon. Valmiina tämä neule pääsee vielä värikylpyyn jotta siitä tulisi enemmän minulle sopivamman värinen. Odottamassa oleva väri on Dylonin Bahama Blue.

During the week I finally decided to finish the pattern and start knitting. The machine performed nicely and I got the pieces finished in couple of evenings. Here's the front and back pieces sewn together. The edges I will knit by hand for cables from cotton with the machine are not so easy. And besides, I was too lazy to swatch rib. Oh, and I have sleeves too, and I've knitted the edges for those already.

The knitting machine is really handy for stockinette stitch pieces and cone yarns are perfect for then there's not so many ends to weave in. Once finished this knit will get a dye bath to become something that is more "me". The colour waiting is Dylon's Bahama Blue.

Pistelin myös ajankuluksi siimaan helminauhan. Tähän valittiin helmiä yhdessä ystävän 6-vuotiaan tytön kanssa, jolle helminauha piakkoin päätyykin. Kyseiseen helminauhaan vaadittiin kaksi yritystä, kun ensimmäistä päätellessä huomasin että puristushelmet eivät siiman kiinnittämiseen olekaan hyvä idea, sillä siima katkesi ja jouduin aloittamaan homman alusta. Toiseen versioon laitoin sitten vaan solmuja.

I also made long necklace using various beads and transparent fishing-line. The beads used I chose together with a friend's 6-year old daughter, who will be the recipient of this necklace. I had to bead the necklace twice for when I was trying to finish the first one I discovered that fishing line and crimp beads don't mix - I just ended up cutting the wire and had to start again. The next time I just used knots and they worked better.

Käytetyt helmet olivat hieman epämääräistä sakkia, mukana kahta eri sävyä sinistä ja yhtä lilaa lasirondellia, huurrettuja lasihelmiä, epämääräisen muotoisia siniharmaita ylijäämähelmiä, susirumia helmikolikkoja, epämääräisen muotoisia valkoisia helmiäisnuggetteja ja sinertäväksi värjättyjä simpukankuoria. Väleissä läpinäkyvä pieniä lasihelmiä. Yllättävän kiva lopputulos tästä sekasotkusta kuitenkin tuli ja sopiva kesäkoruksi.

Pituutta en ole mitannut mutta sen saa kätevästi kierrettyä kaulaan pari kertaa.

The pearls used were a bit of a mixed lot. There's two different blue and one lilac glass rondelles, frosted round glass beads, bluish-grey odd-shaped left-over pearls, irregular shaped mother-of-pearl nuggerts, very ugly pearl coins and bluish coloured smallish sea shells. And small transparent glass beads were used in between. The end result is surprisingly nice and will make a nice summer necklace.

I did not measure the necklace but it goes nicely twice around the neck.

Mallitilkuttelua - Swatching

Ostin joskus pari ebay-erää Colourmartin lankoja. Sain ne aikoja sitten kerittyä mutta en ole tehnyt vielä mallitilkkuja kummempaa. Yritin neulekonekurssin viimeisillä kerroilla saada puuvilla-kashmirit tehdyksi mutta kone ei jostain syystä ollut yhteistyöhaluinen joten se jäi siihen.

Päätin sitten kokeilla omaa konetta ja kyllähän niitä syntyi, mallitilkkuja.

A while ago I bought a couple of Colourmar's ebay sets. I managed to wind them ages ago but I have not yet made more than swatches out of them. During the last few machine knitting classes I tried to make somethig out of the cotton-cashmere blend but for some reason the machine refused to knit 5x5 rib out of it. So I decided to try them out with my own machine and yes, I made swatches.

Ja kun Colourmartin langat ovat yleensä öljyttyjä niin päätin pestä mallitilkun koneessa jotta näkisin miten langa käyttäytyy pesussa. Ja, käyttäytyihän se, ihan mielenkiintoisesti. Vertailussa toinen on se 40 asteen pikapesussa pesty ja toinen 40 asteen villapesussa. Osaatko erottaa kumpi on kumpi?

And since Colourmart's yarns are usually oiled I decided to wash the swatch to see how it behaved. And it did, behave, quite interestingly I'd say. In the above photo is a closeup of the two swatches. One went through a normal quick 40 degrees wash cycle, the other one went through 40 degrees wool wash. Can you tell which is which?

Talvloma - Winter holiday

Kevät näyttää vihdoinkin tulleen ja mikäpä olisi parempi aika pitää talvilomaa. Lähdimme äidin kanssa perinteiselle jokatoissavuotiselle ulkomaanmatkalle harmautta ja sumua pakoon. Jonnekin etelämpään missä oli lämmintä ja aurinko paistoi.

The spring has finally made an appearance and what better time to spend a bit of winter holiday. My Mom and I took our traditional biyearly trip to a more southern climat to get away from the grey and fog.

Ja tällaisen kainalon alle sopivan pikkulaukun jossa kelpaa tepastella vaikka teatterissa. Onneksi päädyin värilliseen tylsän mustan sijaan. Niitä kun saa täältäkin, mustia laukkuja siis, värilliset ovat harvemmassa.

And this small bag suitable for evening use. I'm glad I chose to get this colourful one instead of the black I first thought of buying. For there's more of those boring black bags here than colourful ones.

Käsitöitä - Handicrafts

Käsityöt ovat olleet kovin sukkapitoisia viimeaikoina. Ensimmäinen Rhombus-sukka on edennyt jo kantapäähän. Käytössä ovat neliskulmaiset sukkapuikot. Ostin ensimmäisen parin sellaisia jo jokin aika sitten, mutta ne ovat lyhyttä mallia ja sukan neulominen ohuesta langasta niillä on hieman haastavaa kun puikot meinaavat loppua kesken. Siksi ostin parit 18 cm puikkoja ja ne ovat aika sopivia sukkaneulontaan. En ole huomannut kyllä mitään eroa käsialassa pyöreillä tai neliskulmaisilla, mutta minulla on aika tasainen sukkakäsiala muutenkin.

My knittings have been quite sock-based lately. The first Rhombus sock is beyond the heel turn already. I'm knittig these with square needles from Kollage. I got my first pair of square needles a while back from New York but they are a bit too short to use with thin sock yarn. So I got a few 18 cm ones and they're much better length. I can't say that I notice any difference in how my knitting looks depending on whether I use square or round dpn's for I knit quite evenly with both.

Toiset sukat ovat hieman värikkäämmästä langasta. Kyseessä on Spunky Eclectic Spunky Speckled-lanka jota sain pari vyyhtiä sukkavaihdossa muinoin. Väri on aika...värikäs. Värin nimi on Aztec, mutta itsellä väristä tulee ennemmin mieleen räjähdys karkkikaupassa kuin intiaanikansa. Mutta ihan pirteää se kuitenkin on.

Ensimmäinen sukka on jo valmis ja toinen jäi tähän. Lanka loppui ja pitäisi paikallistaa se toinen vyyhti. En ole kuitenkaan jaksanut kaivella joten siirryin tekemään toista sukkaa. Onneksi on useampi projekti tekeillä samaan aikaan.

The other pair I have on the needles is of a bit more colourful yarn. The yarn in question is from Spunky Eclectic and is called Spunky Speckled. The colour is called Azted although when I look at it I think more about an explosion in a candy store than about an indian tribe. But, it sure is cheerful.

The first sock is finished and the second stopped here. For I ran out of yarn and have to locate the other skein. However, I have no idea where I put it and haven't been bothered to look yet. So I just knitted the other pair. It's good to have many ongoing projects.

Olen väkerrellyt hieman muutakin. Päätin nimittäin kokeilla helmien solmintaa silkkilangan kanssa. Aika nopeasti syntyi pitkä kaulanauha 10 mm kokoisista lapis lazuli-helmistä. Helminauhan päättely ei vaan näytä kovin kauniilta joten siitä ei kuvaa. Silkin päät jäivät hieman hapsottamaan kun minulla ei ollut sopivaa liimaa ja käytin päätössolmuihin kynsilakkaa, joka ei nyt niin hyvin näyttänyt toimivan. En nyt muutenkaan ole mitenkään hirveän ihastunut lopputulokseen vaikka se muuten onkin ihan siisti. Lähinnä tässä tökkii pituus - sain aikaiseksi n. 122 cm pitkän nauhan ja hieman pidempi voisi olla kivempi. Helmiä ei kuitenkaan ole enää joten pitää hieman tuumailla mitä tässä nyt tekisi. Eli katsellako tuota tuollaisena vai puranko tekeleen ja pyörittelen ketjua hopealangan avulla. Silloin siitä ainakin saisi tehtyä pidemmän. Pitääpä mietiskellä.

Mutta käytin tässä 2 langan tekniikkaa ja 0.7 mm helmisilkkiä. Helmien reiät olivat hieman suurenpuoleisia, joten kokoa suurempi silkki olisi toiminut ehkä hieman paremmin.

I've done something else too. For I wanted to try pearl knotting. So I chose these 10 mm big lapis lazuli stone beads and made this long necklace. As it was my first try my end knots do not look that nice - so no closeup of those. I did not have any suitable glue at had so I used clear nailpoish. It did not work too well and the ends of the silk show a bit. Other than that it looks quite good but I'm somehow still not very pleased with it. I think it's because of the length. I got about 122 cm long necklace with the beads I had and I think I'd prefer a bit longer. So now I'm pondering what to do with it. Maybe I should take it apart and try making another using silver wire and wrapped links. That way I could make it a bit longer.

But, I used two-thread method here and used 0.7 mm thick silk thread. The holes on the beads were a bit on the large side so I think size thicker might have worked a bit better.

Viime viikonloppuna - Last weekend

Nyt onnistuin olemaan ilmoittautumisaikana koneen ääressä ja pääsin mukaan neuleretriittiin. Kyseessä on järjestyksessä neljäs ja minulla toinen.

This time I managed to be on the web at the correct time and got to join the knitting retreat. This was the 4th of its kind and my second.

Koolla oli suunnilleen 50 naista ja ohjelmaan kuului kehräämistä, neulomista, syömistä, juomista, juttelua, nauramista, saunomista ja olipa pari työpajaakin tarjolla.

There was about 50 women and on the agenda was spinning, knitting, eating, drinking, talking, laughing, sauna and even a couple of workshops.

Itse en kehrännyt enkä ottanut osaa työpajoihin, muuta tuli kyllä tehtyä. Tässä toisen retriittineuleen langat: 100% merinoa Wollmeiselta, väreissä Petit Poison nr 5 ja Maus Alt.

I did not spin or take part in the workshops, everything else I did. Here's the colours of one of the two retreat knits I brought with me. The yarn is 100% merino from Wollmeise in colours Petit Poison nr 5 wd and Maus Alt.

Tässä toinen, Rhombus-sukat äidille. Lankana taas Wollmeise, nyt sukkalankasekoitusta, twiniä, värissä Türkis. Aloitukseen keksin kolmannen version ja tämäkin näyttää hyvältä.

This is the other and yarn is Wollmeise also but this time in twin and the colour is Türkis. The pattern is my own, Rhombus, and these will be for my Mom. I came up with a third version for the beginning and it looks good also.

Näin aika paljon erilaisia Reinoja sekä sisä- että ulkokenkinä ja mietin että sellaiset olisivat aika kätevät sisäkengät. Itselläni oli sisällä pelkät villasukat ja välillä tuntui pientä kylmyyttä jaloissa kun jostain veti. Ehkä vaaleansini-ruskeat olisivat kivat...



I saw a lot of Reino-shoes used both as outdoor and indoor wear (not at the same time of course) and I started thinking that maybe I should get a pair too. I used only woollen socks indoors and sometimes my feet felt a bit cold when there was a draft. I'm thinking maybe the ones with light blue and brown...

Lankakirpputorille en vienyt tälläkään kertaa myytävää enkä sieltä mitään ostanut, mutta muuten tuli ostoksia tehtyä. Tuulialla oli jokunen laatikko värjättyjä kuitutuotteita tarjolla ja pituudesta oli hyötyä tällä kertaa kun neulojalauma parveili myyntipöydän ympärillä. Ostinpa sitten silkkinessuja paketin. En edelleenkään kehrää, mutta näitä voi neuloa ihan suoraankin, sain opastusta. Ja ovat kuulemma nyt niin kovin muodikkaita joten kerrankin olen trendikäs.
Ai mitäkö niistä meinasin tehdä? Jonkun huivin varmaankin.

I did not take any yarn to the "for sale" table this time either nor did I pick anything up from there. However, I did buy some stuff. Tuulia had a box or three of her own dyeings for sale. My height was an advantage when a horde of knitters swarmed around the offerings. I picked up a packet of silk hankies. I still do not spin but I was told I could knit them straight from the hankies (I got a demonstration). And I was told they are also very in at the moment. It seems as though I'm very "in the moment" for once. Oh, what am I going to do with them? Probably a scarf.

Ikävästi sattui taas kellojen siirto retriittiviikonloppuun. Asiaa auttoi kyllä hieman se että emme huonekaverin kanssa menneet aamiaiselle kumpanakaan aamuna vaan nukuimme hieman pidempään. Olo on tällä hetkellä kyllä hieman vetämätön mokoman ajansiirtelypelleilyn vuoksi, mutta eiköhän se siitä tasaannu viimeistään ensi viikonloppuna.

Unfortunately the summer time time-shift happened during the retreat. It was not so bad this time since neither me nor my roommate went to breakfast on either morning but slept instead. I'm feeling a bit extra tired at the moment because of the whole time-stuff but I think I'll get back to normal during the weekend at the latest.

Messuhankintoja - Craft fair purchases

Maaliskuun aloittaa mukavasti Helsingin Kädentaitomessut Wanhassa satamassa. Viime syksyisestä poiketen päädyin kanssaneulojan kera messuille vasta joskus kahden maissa iltapäivällä. Aika oli kätevä, koska messuilla mahtui etenemään kunnolla eikä tarvinnut turvautua kyynärpäätaktiikkaan ja osastoillekin mahtui.

Tällä kertaa en löytänyt sitä mitä menin hakemaan - nimittäin koruntekoon sopivaa puuvillanyöriä, vahattuna tai ilman ja mielellään tummanvihreänä - mutta jotain muuta tarttui mukaan. Titityyn kojulta ostin harmaata BC-garnin Sarah Tweed silkkiskoitelankaa (50% mulperisilkkiä, 10 % bourettesilkkiä ja 40% villaa). Kujeelta ostin kaunista tummaa Shibui Knitsin Sock-lankaa värissä Ink (keskimmäinen) ja myös vyyhdin sinivihreää Cascade Yarsin Heritage-sukkalankaa, joka ei valitettavasti päässyt kuvaan. Villakivellä on myynnissä sekä villaa että korutarvikkeita, mutta tällä kertaa sieltä lähti mukaan lankaa. 3 kahden hinnalla oli houkutteleva tarjous ja langan väri kaunis. Kolme vyyhtiä Punta Yarnsin Merisoft Solid-lankaa tummana turkoosina/petroolinsinisenä siis.

The craft fair in Helsinki Wanha satama is a good way to start March. I went there with a fellow knitter on Saturday. Contrary to last autumn we arrived at the fair quite late on the afternoon, around two o'clock. That was actually a very good time for there was plenty of room on the aisles and we did not have to resort to elbows to get to the stands.

This time I did not find what I went there to get - that is cotton string suitable for jewellery use, waxed or not, preferably in dark green - but I picked up a couple of this and a couple of that. From Titityy I picked up a few skeins of BC Garn Sarah Tweed silk-wook yarn (50% mulberry silk, 10% bourette silk, 40% wool) in grey. The one in the middle is from yarn shop Kuje and is Shibui Knits Shibui Sock in Ink. I also bought a skein of Cascade Yarns Heritage sock yarn but I forgot to put it into the picture. The one in the top is from Villakivi for their 3 for the price of 2 offer was tempting. It is Punta Yarns Merisoft Solid in dark turquoise/petrol.

Helmien talosta poimin mukaani muutaman helminauhan vaikka heillä ei mitään messutarjouksia näyttänytkään olevan. Eri kokoisia lasihelmiä turkoosina ja rusehtavana ja hieman blingiä: kiinalaisia kristallihelmiä paria kokoa. Ilmeisesti nauhojen kuvaaminen samalla kertaa ei ollut oikein hyvä idea koska en saanut kristalleja toistumaan oikean värisinä eikä kuvankäsittelykään siinä auttanut. Ne ovat luonnossa voimakkaan sinivihreitä. Kyllä, sinivihreä kausi jatkuu edelleen.

From Helmien talo I picked up some bead strings even though they did not seem to have any fair specials. Some glass beads in turquoise and brown, in three sizes. Also a bit of bling: Chinese crystal beads, big and small. It obviously was not a good idea to photograph them all at once for I could not get the crystals to turn out right even thought I tried some serious photoshopping. But they are really quite strong blue-green colour. Yes, my bluish green period is still going on strong.

ADHD-takki etenee - en onnistunut aloittamaan mitään uutta vaikka hieman mieli tekikin. Työviikko oli aika kamottava - ja lisää seuraa - joten en ole jaksanut saati ehtinyt neuloa kauheasti. Mutta eteneehän tuo pikkuhiljaa. Toisaalta tuntuu hassulta neuloa kashmiria kun kevät kolkuttelee ovella mutta toisaalta ei sitä viitsisi keskenkään jättää. Ja ehtiihän maaliskuussakin vielä olla kylmä.

My ADHD-cardi is progressing, albeit slowly. I've managed to knit only it even though I've been thinking of spring knits lately. My work week was quite horrible - and there's more to come - so I've not had that much energy for knitting. Although it feels a bit funny knitting cashmere when spring is at the door but I do not like to leave it unfinished either. So I think I'll just keep on knitting it for it can be cold in March too.

Korupäivitys - Jewellery update

Koruja on tullut tehtyä hieman vaihtelevalla menestyksellä syksyn aikana ja kun en ole niitä kaikkia esitellyt, niin tässä tulee sitten korupläjäys. (Ja ihan sivuhuomautuksena, päätin valita ne kapeammat raidat).

I've done some bits and pieces of jewellery during the autumn and winter and since I haven't shown them all I thought I'd make an update just for them. (And as a side note, I decided to go with thinner stripes).

Tarjouduin tekemään ystävälle joululahjaksi kaulakorun ja löysin Tampereen messuilta kivoja helmiä: kolikon mallista vihreän, harmaan ja mustan kirjavaa kiveä. Valitettavasti myyjätyttö ei osannut sanoa mitä kiveä ne ovat joten se jää hieman arvoitukseksi. Ostin mukaan myös pieniä mattapintaisia onyx-helmiä mutta en sitten saanut yhdistelmää oikein toimimaan - siitä tuli jotenkin kovin tätimäinen. Päädyin sitten tilailemaan valikoiman erilaisia hopeahelmiä ja sommittelin niistä tämän.

I offered to make a necklace to a friend as a xmas present and I found suitable stone beads at the Tampere fair: these geen-grey-black coin-shaped beads. Unfortunately the girl who was handling the stand didn't know what stone these were so that remains a mystery. I also bought some small round matte onyx beads but I did not manage to get the combination to work and ended up ordering some mixed silver beads and made this.

Kivien välissä on pieniä hopeadonitseja. Jotain käsitystä koosta antanee se, että nuo hopeahelmet ovat noin 8 mm leveitä. Kivien väriä on todella vaikea saada toistumaan oikeana kuvissa, luonnossa väri on jonkin verran vaaleampi kuin mitä sain aikaseksi näistä ja niissä on aika kaunis luonnollinen hieman khakivihreä väri.

There's also some small silver rondelles between the beads. To give some idea of the size, the silver beads are about 8 mm wide. And the colour of the beads was really tricky to get right. In real life they're a bit lighter than in the photos and they have a nice, natural khaki-green colour.

Kokemus opettaa, eli tässäkin olisi pitänyt ostaa pari nauhaa kiviä. Jouduin laittamaan mukaan pari ei-ihan täydellistä kiveä jotta sain tarpeeksi pitkän kaulakorun. Onneksi ne olivat vain hieman karheapintaisia, joten ne eivät kauheasti paista esiin. Laitoin koruun hieman erikoiseman lukon. Harmillisesti en ole saanut tätä annettua vieläkään vaikka joulusta on jo tovi. Olemme olleet vuorotellen sairaina joten tapaamisaikaa on ollut hankala sopia. Mutta, Lotta, tällainen siitä nyt sitten tuli.

I don't have that much practice in jewellery making yet, so I did not realize that I should have bought two strings of beads. So I ended up using a couple of not-so-perfect beads to get long enough necklace. Luckily they were just a bit rough on the surface so they don't stand out from the rest of the string that much. I put a bit decorative clasp on it. Unfortunately I haven't manage to gift my friend with the necklace yet even though it's been a while since xmas. We've been ill in turns so it has been impossible to meet. Hopefully we'll manage it soon though.

Seuraava koru lähti tuunauspohjalta. Ystävälläni oli Barcelonasta ostettu hopea-Mallorcahelmi-rannekoru jonka helmet alkoivat rapistua käytössä jo parin kuukauden jälkeen. Lupasin vaihtaa siihen kivihelmet ja sitten sattuikin koru sopivasti hajoamaan juuri kun hän oli meillä joten koru jäi tänne. Alkuajatus oli käyttää muut korunosat hyväksi ja vaihtaa vain helmet, mutta tarkempi tarkastelu paljasti että hopeaksi luullut osat olivat kaikkea muuta joten en halunnut käyttää niitä. Ja eikö Mallorca-helmien pitäisi olla lasihelmisydämisiä? Nämä olivat kyllä kaikkea muuta - nimittäin muovia.

This next piece started from an existing bracelet a friend of mine got from Barcelona. It was said to be silver with Mallorca beads. The beads had started to show signs of wear after only a couple of months so I offered to change them to stone beads for better wearability. Then one time she was here the bracelet conveniently broke and we moved the project forward. The original plan was to use the rest of the bracelet parts and just change the beads but as I started to put it back together I noticed that the parts that were said to be silver were anything but I didn't want to use them.

Päädyimme vihreään kiveen - New British Columbia jadeen tarkemmin sanottuna (nefriittiä) ja koossa 10 mm. Kivet olivat perussävyltään hieman sammaleenvihreitä ja niitä oli nauhassa hieman eri sävyisiä, tummempia ja vaaleampia. Valitsin rannekoruun suunnilleen samansävyiset yksilöt ja käytin alkuperäisestä rannekorusta kuitenkin hopeanväriset putket, koska ne näyttivät hyviltä eikä niissä näkynyt mitään kulumia tai kuparinvärisiä kohtia. Lievätkö sitten hopeaa vai ei, mutta väliäkö tuolla jos kestävät. Väliin laittelin alkuperäisen pienistä helmihatuista poiketen balin rondelleja ja käytin paksumpaa vaijeria. Rannekorusta tuli näin hieman jäykempi, mutta kestää todennäköisesti kulutusta paremmin.

We ended up using a green stone - New British Columbia jade (nephrite) to be exact in the 10 mm bead size. The stones in the string had a nice moss-green base colour and were a bit different shades - darker and lighter. I chose about same shade beads to the bracelet and ended up using the tubes from the original bracelet for they looked to be ok without any signs of wear or copper colour showing. Who knows, they might even actually be silver. On both sides of the beads I put some silver bali rondelles and used thicker wire than the original had. The bracelet ended up a bit stiffer but it will hopefully withstand wear a bit better.

Koska kiviä oli jäljellä vielä runsaasti ja vihreä ei ole oikein minun värini päätin askarrella hieman lisää. Settiin tuli kaulakoru mustien 6 mm onyx-helmien (jos ne nyt sitä ovat, tai sitten agaattia), 2 mm hopeahelmien ja bali-rondellien kera. Tyylikäs arkikoru, ei liian hienosteleva mutta kuitenkin sopivasti vaihtelevuutta.

Because I had plenty of beads left over and green is not really my colour I decided to make a necklace to go with the bracelet. Here I used black 6 mm onyx beads (or they might actually be agate), 2 mm silver beads and the same bali rondelles as in the bracelet. Not too fancy, suitable for every day wear but not too boring either.

Pyöräytinpä sitten settiin sopivat korvakorutkin hieman myöhemmin. Ja mikä parasta, olen nähnyt kaikki käytössä. Mukava tehdä lahjaksi kun sattuu sopimaan hyvin vastaanottajan makuun ja tyyliin.

A bit afterwards I decided to make a pair of earrings to go with the set too. And what's best, I've seen all of them being worn. I like making gifts when I manage to make something that matches the style and taste of the receiver.
