Islantia - Iceland

Oli tarkoitus päivittää Islannin ostokset heti Kööpenhaminan jutun jälkeen, mutta sitten iski työt ja heti sen jälkeen tuli kipeäksi enkä sitten jaksanut päivittää. Puolikuntoinen olo jatkui yllättävän pitkään, vaikken mitenkään erityisen sairas ollut, sellaista flunssaa vain. Nyt tuntuu taas olo suunnilleen ihmiseltä ja päivitettävääkin on kertynyt. Aloitetaan kuitenkin Islannilla.

Itse en kauheasti kuvia räpsinyt, kun mukana oli mies jolla digijärkkäri. Keskityin enemmän ihmettelyyn ja annoin toisen hoitaa valokuvaustehtäviä. Mitään suurempia shoppailusuunnitelmia minulla ei ollut, suunnitelmissa oli käydä jossain lankakaupassa jos ehtii. Mietin ensin islantilaisen villapaidan ostamista, mutta nähtyäni niitä jokapaikassa kyllästyin niihin totaalisesti. Tuskin sitäpaitsi olisin moista paksua neuletta paljon pitänytkään, kun tapanani ei ole pitää villapaitaa ulkovaatteena. Melkein ostin kätevän villapaita-shoftshell-yhdistelmän, mutta sitten päädyin tähän toimistokelpoiseen ohueen merinovillatakkiin. Näitä bongasin vain yhdestä myymälästä ja malli olikin heidän itsensä teettämä. Perinteistä kuviota löytyi kauluksesta, hihojen alareunasta ja sivuista. Kätevä idea muutenkin, vaikka neulekonekurssille, jos ohuesta langasta on vaikea saada mahtumaan kokonaista kappaletta neulapedin leveydelle.

I had meant to update straight after the Copenhagen piece, but then work happened and I got ill and stuff. The flu lingered for quite a while but now I feel quite well again. I have material for updates but I'll start with the oldest, that is Iceland.

I did not take that much photos while we were there, for the hubby has a proper digital camera with different lenses. I let him take the photos and concentrated more on other things. I had no special shopping plans for Iceland, but it is always nice if I manage to find something local and visit a yarn shop or two. I thought about buying a traditional Icelandic sweater, but after I saw them everywhere I got totally sick of them. And I doubt I would have had much use for such thick sweaters for I am not in the habit of wearing sweaters as outdoor wear. I almost bought this practical sweater/softshell jacket combo, but then I saw this thin merino cardi. It is black and white and practical for office wear also and it is soft. I saw them only on this one store and they said it was their own model. Machine knit, with traditional fair-isle pattern on collar, underside of sleeves and at side seams. A nice idea for a machine knit sweater for sometimes it is difficult to get a whole piece on the needle bed when using thin yarn.

Koska syntymäpäiväni sattui olemaan sopivasti matkan aikana, käytin etukäteen saamiani syntymäpäivälahjarahoja ja ostin itselleni korvakorut. Kuten villapaitoja, myös laavakoruja löytyi vähän joka kaupasta. Harvassa mainostettiin itse laavan olevan islantilaista, vaikka design sitä olisi ollutkin. Niinpä mukaan ei tarttunut laavakorua vaan hopeakukkaset helmillä. Nämä löytyivät Aurum-kaupasta ja luulen että ne saattaisivat olla Heiða-sarjaa.

Because my birthday happened conveniently while we were in Iceland, I decided to use the birthday money I got from my Mom and buy myself something nice. And this time something nice was a pair of earrings. As with the sweaters I also got tired of lava stome jewellery. First, very few stated that the stones used were actually from Iceland and second, I just saw too much of them. These I got from a shop called Aurum. I think they're from Heiða-series, even though I couldn't find them on the website.

Nálin-kaupan ohi menin montakin kertaa, mutta se oli suljettu. Sitten kun menin sinne tarkoituksella, oli käynyt näin. Ilmeisesti ikkunassa ollut pieni alelappu kertoi muuttomyynnistä, mutta koska islannintaitoni on olematon, luulin sitä vain normaaliksi alelapuksi. Niinpä en sitten päässyt sinne.

I went past Nálin many times but it was always closed. However, when I actually made time to go there, this had happened. Apparently the small sign on the shop window that I thought meant some things were on sale, was talking about a moving sale. But, since my Icelandic skills are what they are (or aren't in this case) I did not understand it. So, I did not visit that shop.

Sen sijaan kävin Storkurinnissa - ja minulle puhuttiin suomea. Ilmeisesti näytän tarpeeksi suomalaiselta, tai sitten laukussa keikkunut Marimekko-heijastin ilmiantoi minut tai kenties manailin liian äänekkäästi tiputettuani muutaman lankakerän. Kuka ties. Ostin kuitenkin muutaman kerän pitsihuivilankaa ja parit Addi click-päät ja kaapelisetin. Addin irtopuikkoja olenkin halunnut kokeilla.

Instead I went to Storkurinn - and got service in Finnish. Maybe I look too Finnish, or maybe it was the Marimekko reflector on my bag that gave me away, or maybe I cussed a bit too loud after dropping a few balls of yarn, who knows. But, I got a few balls of lovely dark teal lace yarn and a couple of Addi click tips and some cables. I've wanted to try Addi click needles a while now.

I also came across this book on a shop window. I think it might not have that much need in Iceland...

Kööpenhamina - Copenhagen

Aloitin lomailun Kööpenhaminalla. Pitkä viikonloppu ystävän kanssa, perjantaista maanantaihin. Turisteerasimme, kiersimme muutaman kaupan ja söimme hyvää ruokaa (Copenhagen-kortti oli kätevä). Kaupungista löytyi myös hieman erilaista maisemaa.

I started my holiday with Copenhagen. Spent a long weekend - Friday to Monday - there with a friend. We did the touristy things, went to a few shops and ate good food (Copenhagen card was handy). We also found some a bit different views.

Tivolissa kävin vain yhdessä laitteessa, Paholaisessa. Ystäväni ei oikein innostunut kieputtimista, joten sain käydä yksin. Pidän vuoristoradoista, vaikka siinä ensimmäisen nousun aikana tuntuukin hieman siltä että onkohan tämä nyt oikein viisasta. Paholainen oli huiman hauska mutta myös kovin lyhyt. Olisi kierros voitu mielestäni mennä kahdesti läpi.

At the Tivoli I visited only one ride, the Demon. My friend wasn't too keen on the things that go high and upside down so I had to do it on my own. I like roller coasters, though when they start the first ride there's too much time to think about the crazyness of it all. The ride was scary fun but over too fast. It would have been nicer to go around the track twice.

Halusimme myös jotain muuta kuin tavallisia museoita, joten päätimme matkata Arkeniin katsomaan modernia taidetta. Mielessä välkkyi joku Kiasman, Pompidou keskuksen, MoMan ja muiden tapainen museo. Matkasimme siis junalla Ishøjn asemalle, josta pääsisi museolle kätevästi bussilla. Tai pääsisi, jos ei olisi ollut matkalla sunnuntaina, jolloin bussi kulkee vain kerran tunnissa ja se oli mennyt juuri viisi minuuttia ennen junan saapumista. Ja tällaisia asioitahan ei tietenkään kannata laittaa esim. museon nettisivuille, hauskempaahan se on kun huomaa vasta perillä.

We wanted something else than ordinary stuffy museums so we decided to go see some modern art at Arken. We were thinking about something like Kiasma, Pompidou center, MoMa, etc. and so we took a train to Ishøj station where it was only a short bus ride to the museum. Or it would have been if it wouldn't have been Sunday when the bus ran only once an hour and the last bus left just five minutes before our train got there. And things like these are surely worthless to mention on, say, the museum website. It is much nicer for the tourist when things like these are found out only after arrival.

Koska bussimatkan piti olla lyhyt, niin päättelimme ehtimällä kävelemällä paikalle ennen seuraavaa bussia ja tovin etsittyämme näimmekin opasteen ja lähdimme sen osoittamaan suuntaan. Jossain vaiheessa hieman epäilytti, että näinköhän löydämme tämän modernin taiteen esittelyareenan lähiömaisemasta.

Since the bus ride was supposed to be short, we deduced that we could probably reach the museum on foot before the next bus. After searching for a bit we found a sign pointing the right direction and started walking. At some point we wondered whether we would really find that arena of modern art amongst the suburbia.

Mutta, hämmentävää kyllä, sieltä se löytyi humisevien rantakaislikkojen keskeltä. Museo oli pieni mutta ihan kiinnostava. Takaisin asemalle menimme kuitenkin bussilla.

Amazingly enough there it was, amongst some reeds and reefs. The museum was quite small but the exhibits were interesting. We took the bus back to the station, though.

En siis käynyt matkallani yhdessäkään lankakaupassa. Hämmentävää, mutta totta. En tiedä mistä moinen, mutta mieleen ei tullut edes ne kaikki tanskalaiset suunnittelijat saati sitten BC garn ja muut. Töissä oli ollut aika haipakkaa ennen lomaa ja jotenkin en edes jaksanut ajatella osoitteiden kaivamista ja yleensäkään sitä että pitäisi suunnitella minne menee ja miten. Sen sijaan päädyimme NoaNoan alennusmyyntiin ja ostin pari mekkoa. Sinivalkoiseen ihastuin kun se tuo mieleeni vanhat sinivalkoiset posliiniastiat, joita Arabiallakin on ollut. Syksyä odottamaan ostin tummanharmaan vakosamettimekon. Ystäväni löysi paikallisesta urheilukaupasta oikein mukavan mutta tyylikkään näköiset Tevan sandaalit joista olen edelleenkin kovasti kateellinen.

As I said previously, I did not go to any yarn stores on my trip. Baffling, but true. I do not know why, but I did not even think about all the Danish knit designers or BC garn or any of that stuff. I had such a busy time at work before the holidays that I wasn't even a bit interested about searching for the yarn shops or seeing where they were or even planning on when to see what. Instead we ended up on a NoaNoa sale and I bought two dresses. I liked the blue-white skirt because it reminds me of old porceline plates and dishes. And waiting for the autumn, I got a dark grey corduroy dress. My friend found a very comfy-looking but stylish pair of Teva sandals from a local sports store and I'm still a bit envious they didn't have my size.

Lomailua - Holidays

Täällä lomaillaan. Aloitin kesäloman heti matkailulla ja tässä kuvia ensimmäisestä matkakohteesta.

I'm enjoying my holiday here. I started my holiday with a trip to abroads. Here's some photos of my first destination.

Täällä kävin ystävän kanssa viettämässä pitkää viikonloppua. Lentopisteitä oli vanhenemassa ja ne piti saada käytettyä, siitä määräytyi matkakohde.

Here I spent a long weekend with a friend. I had some frequent flyer points that were about to expire so that is why we chose this destination.

Lisäksi en ollut siellä käynyt aiemmin (tai no, kuulemma joskus vaahtosammuttimen kokoisena mutta sitä ei lasketa kun en edes muista) ja olin kuullut että paikka on miellyttävä.

And I hadn't been there before (well, they say I was there when I was very little, but I think that doesn't count since I have no memories of it) and I had been told it was a very nice city.

Ja olihan se - vaikka en käynyt edes yhdessäkään lankakaupassa. Tähän olisi tullut kuva paikan tunnetuimmasta nähtävyydestä, mutta se oli muualla.

And it was. And the trip was nice also even though I didn't visit any yarn store. I would have shown you a photo of its most famous statue but it was not there so I can't.

Vietin parisen päivää kotona ja sitten lähdimme Hannun kanssa kuumaa pakoon. En yleensä lomaile näin innokkaasti, mutta kun nyt oli mahdollista lähteä jonnekin yhdessä niin lähdimme.

I spent a few days at home and off I went again, this time with Hannu. I don't normally travel that much but since we have not been able to go anywhere together in a few years we decided to take a trip.

Lämpötila oli huomattavasti miellyttävämpää, sellaista 14-16 astetta, hieman sateili välillä mutta kaikenkaikkiaan ilmat olivat ihan hyvät. Ja maisemat upeita.

We ran away from the heat and here the temperature was much nicer, about 14-16 degrees centigrade. The weather was all in all very nice, some small rains here and there but nothing serious. And the views were superb.

Täällä olen taas aina halunnut käydä ja nyt maa on vielä suhteellisen edullinenkin. Retkeilimme innokkaasti ympäriinsä.

This is a country I've always wanted to go to and the prices there are still quite reasonable. We took some tours around the place.

Ja kävin jopa lankakaupassakin. Olisin käynyt toisessakin mutta se onnistui menemään muuton vuoksi kiinni juuri silloin kun olisin ollut aukioloaikaan paikalla.


And I even managed to visit a yarn store. I would have visited another one too, but it managed to be closed due to moving just when I wanted to go there.

Prinsessa Leia ja kumppanit - Princess Leia and companions

Viime aikoina on ollut hieman liian lämmintä neulomiseen ja muutenkin olen tahkonnut vain tylsää huivia, joten koruja on tullut väännettyä. Ostin viime syksyn kädentaito-messuilta kolme pussia isohkoja neliönmuotoisia foliolasihelmiä kahta väriä, koska ne olivat niin kauniita ja kolme pussia siksi kun sen sai kahden hinnalla. Olen niitä pyöritellyt ja mietiskellyt ja nyt ne vihdoin päätyivät koruiksi.

It has been a bit too hot to knit lately and anyhow all I've been knitting is this scarf that is quite boring and seems to take forever to finish (mainly it has been a knit-meet knit). So, I've made some jewellery instead. Last autumn I bought these large glass foil squares. I bought three bags because I they were pretty and I got them for the price of two. I've been mulling over what to make of them and finally I used them.

Välillä on kiva käyttää näyttäviä koruja, mutta silti pidän niistä yksinkertaisina. Paloja pyöritellessäni mieleeni tuli heti Planetaariset laaksot, kaulakoru joka oli prinsessa Leian kaulassa Tähtiensota IV-elokuvassa, ja kaulakoru muotoutui siltä pohjalta.

Kaulakoru on tehty paksumpaan koruvaijeriin ja palojen välissä on 5 mm kokoiset uurteiset tummahkot hopeapallot. Rannekorun pistelin taas kuminauhaan jonka suljin krimppihelmellä. Helmi sujahti näppärästi piiloon lasineliön sisälle, joten liitoskohta jäi kätevästi näkymättömiin.

Sometimes it is nice to wear big jewellery, but I like it to be simple. When I played around with the pieces I was instantly reminded of the necklace, Planetoid Valleys, that princess Leia was wearing on the Star Wars IV-movie. That is why I made this simple but massive necklace.

The necklace is strung on a medium beading wire with 5 mm corrugated sterling silver beads in between. The bracelet is strung on a clear stretch magic cord and closed with a crimp bead. The crimp bead was just the right size to slide into a square so the join is not visible at all when worn.

Tarjouduin tekemään äidille kaulakorun ja kyselin väritoiveita. Sieltä tuli sitten: mustaa, lilaa, jotain semmoista. No, tässä nyt on mustaa, lilaa ja jotain semmoista.

I offered to make a necklace for my Mom and I asked what colours she would like, and she answered: black, lilac, and such. Here's black, lilac and such then.

Korusta löytyy siis Swarovskin bicone-kristalleja väreissä amethyst, jet, black diamond ja fuchsia, koossa 8 ja 4 mm. Kristallit on pujotettu vaijeriin, mukana myös 2 mm hopeahelmiä ja mustia lasisia putkihelmiä. Kiva yksityiskohta on mielestäni se, että nuo lasiset putkihelmet ovat peräisin äitini mekosta, jota hän piti joskus nuorena.

There's some Swarovski bicones in jet, amethyst, fuchsia and black diamond, in 8 and 4 mm. Then there's also some 2 mm sterling silver beads and black glass tube pearls. The tube pearls came from a dress my Mom wore when she was young.

Kun nyt räpsin valokuvia, yritin ottaa paremman kuvan taannoisesta modauksesta.

Since I was taking photos, I tried to take a better shot from the mod job I did earlier.

Lopuksi vielä kuva valmiista tyynynpäällisistä. Nämähän vetelin viimetöikseni äidille kevään neulekonekurssilla. Tuskaa oli, mutta valmiina ovat nätit kuin sika pienenä. Etummaisen nappeina ovat äidin tekemät poronsarvinapit.

To finish I present you with finished pillow covers. I made these on the last knitting machine class of the spring. They were a pain to make but are really pretty now that they are done. The one in the front has some reindeer-bone buttons that my Mom made.

Taivuttelua - Bending

Taannoin näin eräässä rihkamakorukaupassa kivat korvakorut. En kuitenkaan ostanut niitä, koska korun merkinnät olivat epäselviä ja nikkeliset rihkamakorut tuppaavat kutittamaan korvien reikiä, joten välttelen niitä. Olenkin usein vaihtanut muuten kivan korun koukut hopeisiksi, mutta onhan siitä aina ylimääräistä vaivaa. Joku niissä kuitenkin jäi vaivaamaan, joten päätin tehdä oman version aiheesta.

Otetaan siis kasa lyhyitä hopeisia korupiikkejä ja Swarovskin kristallikartiota kokoa 4 mm. Sitten väännellään hieman.

A while ago I saw a nice pair of earrings in one of these shops that sell cheap costume jewellery. I did not buy them for the markings on them were unclear and the ones with nickel tend to make my ear-holes itch so I try to avoid them. I have sometimes changed the hooks on an otherwise lovely pair of earrings, but that just extra work. Something about them nagged me though and since I got bitten by the jewellery-making bug I decided to make my own version.

So, take a bunch of silver head pins and some 4 mm Swarovski bicones. Then do some bending.

For a pair I used:
24 Sterling silver headpins - I could have used silver plated also but I did not run across any that were thin enough to use with the small crystals. I think these were about 24 gauge.

Here I could waffle about not having done stuff like this before and like, but I won't bother. They are pretty ones even though they are not perfect. And actually nothing like the earrings I saw.

Petroolia ja ruskeaa - Teal and brown

Miten sitä sanotaankaan, että kun antaa pahalle pikkusormen... niin eihän se siihen jää, se korujen teko siis. Olen yrittänyt pysytellä erossa kaikenmaailman helmistä ja muista, koruharakka kun olen, mutta nyt oli pakko luovuttaa. Hommaillessani välineitä tuunausta varten, tuli sitä ehkä jotain muutakin ostettua, samalla. Ja kun niitä on, niin pitäähän niitä sitten käyttää. Tällä kertaa käsittelyyn pääsi joskus lapsuudessa syntymäpäivälahjaksi saatu puuhelminauha.

What do they say, give devil your finger... it does not stop there, jewellery making that is. I've been trying to keep away from pearls and beads since I like all things shiny but when I was buying stuff for the make-over, I got some other stuff too. And when you have stuff, you have to use it. This time I dug out an old necklace made out of wooden pearls that I got as a birthday present when I was a child.

En tainnut pitää tuota kuin ehkä pari kertaa, mutta olen jostain syystä säilyttänyt sen. Lähinnä kai siksi, että värit ovat mielestäni kauniit ja ne sopivat yhteen: ruskeaa ja petroolia. Ensimmäisen kuvan helmet ovat liian siniset, muissa väri on lähempänä oikeaa.

I don't think I wore that more than once or twice, but for some reason I've kept it. I guess it was because of the colours and how well they go together: teal and brown. The colours of the first photo are way too blue, there rest are more accurate.

Helminauha oli myös omituisen pituinen, ei pitkä eikä lyhyt. Pistin sen sitten palasiksi ja laitoin siemenhelmiä väliin. Mietin myös muita värijärjestyksiä, mutta pidättäydyin tässä simppelissä joka toinen-teemassa. Korun pituutta kuvaa ehkä se, että sain siitä tehtyä sekä kaulakorun että rannekorun ja helmiä jäi vielä yli. Kaulakoru on tehty vaijeriin ja siinä on papukaijalukko. Rannekoru sen sijaan on ilman lukkoa, kuminauhalla.

The necklace was also of odd length, not long but not short either. So I cut it to pieces and restrung it with seed beads. I also toyed with other colour combinations but decided to stick with the every other-theme. You might get an idea about the length of the original piece, since I got a necklace and bracelet out of it with beads left over. The necklace is about a normal length, 45 cm or so, with a lobster claw clasp and the bracelet is without a lock, strung on an elastic cord.

Tarkoitus on tehdä vielä korvakorut, mutta odottelen vielä koukkuja. Kaikenkaikkiaan mukava pikkusetti, tälle tulee kyllä käyttöä. Neuleista ei sitten puhutakaan, nyt ei taas suju mikään. Keskityn siis näpertelyyn.

I plan to make a pair of earrings to this set too. Though I'm waiting for the hooks. Knits I won't mention since this is not a good time for knits, for nothing seems to work right. So I'll concentrate on fiddling with beads and stuff.

RIP Kisuli 1.7. 1992 - 2.6.2010

Viime viikko ei kyllä ollut paras tähänastisista, vaan todellakin päinvastoin. Olemme keskiviikosta asti joutuneet totuttautumaan asumiseen kissattomassa kissataloudessa. Kissataloudessa siksi, että ensisilmäyksellä vaikuttaa siltä että talossa olisi kissa, kissattomassa siksi että sitä nyt ei enää olekaan. Rakas Kisulimme sai äkillisen munuaisten vajaatoiminnan - sen kroonisen lisäksi - ja koska ennuste oli huono ja vaihtoehtona olisi ollut kissan pito ympärivuorokautisessa hoidossa lääkärillä epämääräisen ajan, niin raskain mielin päätimme että on aika päästää se autuaammille katkaravunmetsästysmaille. Ikävä on kyllä kova kun toinen lähti niin äkkiä, sillä peruskrempoista huolimatta se oli kyllä aika pirteä viimeiseen pariin päivään saakka.

Last week wasn't the best, quite the opposite in fact. We have had to get used to being a one-cat household without a cat since last Wednesday. It seems and feels like there is a cat about the house, but there just isn't one. Our dear cat got an acute kidney failure and since the prognosis was pretty bad and the only possible (and very unlikely) treatment would have been to leave the cat in the care of the vet 24 hours a day for who knows how long, we decided that it was time to let the beloved pet rest.

Hopean kiiltoa ja kimallusta - Silver sheen and sparkles

Luulen että olen hurahtamassa korutöihin. Varmaa se vielä ei ole, mutta koska olen sellainen koruharakka jo muutenkin, niin eroon pyristeleminen voi olla vaikeaa, varsinkin kun on tullut hommattua tarvikkeita jo pariin otteeseen.

I think I have found a new hobby: jewellery making. It is still not 100% certain, but since I'm quite partial to shiny things as it is, it might be difficult to stop here. Especially since I've shopped for supplies once or twice already.

Mutta kaikki lähti ihan viattomasti työkaverilla olleesta Snö-kaulakorusta ja ideasta hyödyntää käyttämättä jäänyttä hopeaketjua. Veljeni punoo ketjuja pyynnöstä ja ohjeesta ja jokunen vuosi tuli pyydettyä hopeinen panta-mallinen kaulakoru. Koru tuli valmiiksi mutta sen pito jäi aika vähälle kun se ei pantana pysynyt lörppöytensä vuoksi ja en mitään vahvistustakaan siihen keksinyt. Sitäpaitsi, jos Meslewin myyjättären mukaan minulle käyvät olkaimettomat puvut koska kaulani on niin lyhyt, niin tokkopa tällaiselle töpökaulalle kaulapantakorutkaan sitten käyvät.

It all started quite innocently when I saw the nice Snö-necklace on my co-worker and remembered that I have one quite unused silver chain. My brother makes chains by request and from instructions and a few years ago I requested a choker-style chain. The chain was finished but I did not wear it for it was too floppy to wear as a choker and I never got round to making it more firm. And since I was told by a wedding dress boutique saleslady that strapless gowns suit me because I have a short neck, I doubt chokers would suit my stubby neck either.

Hieman mietiskelyä ja tarvikkeiden hankintaa ja toimeen. Eilen teurastin ketjua ja liitin sen päihin hopearenkaat. Jonkin verran pähkäilyä vaati se, mihin kohtaan ketjua liitospalat asettuivat, mutta lopulta sain ne mielestäni hyvään kohtaan.

I got some supplies and got to working. Yesterday I got hacking with the chain and attached some silver cut-out rings on it. It took me a while to figure out how to attach the rings nicely, but I think I managed fine in the end.

Sitten hieman Swarovskin kristalleja, hopeahelmiä, koruvaijeria, lukkoja yms. Tästä saanee jo idean. Kristalliketjun molemmissa päissä on papukaijalukot. Ideana on että koruun voi vaihtaa väriä vaatteiden ja vaikka mielialan mukaan.

Then some Swarovski beads, small silver beads, clasps, beading wire etc. I think you can see the idea from the above photo. The crystal chain has lobster claws on both ends. The idea is that I can change the coloured parts to suit what I'm wearing or just because.

Tänään viimeistelin korun. Jouduin hieman lyhentämään eilistä kristalliketjua koska siten sain molemmat asettumaan paremmin. Värit ovat kuvassa hieman pielessä, mutta siitä näkee hyvin miten koru asettuu kaulalle. Nämä kristallit ovat väriä indicolite, sinertävän vihertävää, tai miten sitä nyt kuvailisi. Hankittuna on vielä vihreitä ja tumman liloja, mutta en ole vielä päättänyt teenkö niistä lisäkappaleita vai hommaanko jotain muuta väriä. Joku harmahtava voisi olla kiva. Tai fuksia.

Today I finished the piece. I had to shorten the piece I made yesterday by one bead for I wanted to get some space between the chains. The colours are a bit off on the photo, but you can see how the necklace looks from it. The crystals I used are of indicolite-colour, somewhat bluish greenish colour. Hard to describe, I'll have to try to take some better photos. I have still some green and dark violet crystals but I'm not sure if I'll make some extra pieces out of them for this or if I'll get some other colour. Some greyish colour might be nice. Or fuchsia.

Jotta nyt ei mentäisi ihan näpertelylinjalle, niin loppuun hieman neulomistakin. Varastoissa oli yksi yksinäinen kartio tumman sinistä Colourmartin silkki-kashmiria ja siitä tuli pieni huivi. Halusin kokeilla hieman kaarevampaa kolmiohuivia, ja aika kivasti se onnistui. Väri on tietenkin taas sellainen, että siitä ei saa kunnon kuvia, mutta jahka saan huivin pestyä ja pingoitettua niin voisin kuvata sitä ulkona.

So as not to go completely into another tangent, here's some knitting to finish. I had a lone cone of Colourmart silk-cashmere and I wanted to do something out of it. There wasn't that much yardage on the cone, but I managed to knit this small scarf. I wanted to try a crescent-shaped shawl, and it seems to have worked out fine. The colour is of course hard to photograph, but after I've washed and blocked this I'll go outside to take some photos and we'll see if they turn out better.

Vinohkoa viihdettä - Biased entertainment

Kevät tuli taas ja sen myötä kaipaus lyhyempiin hihoihin. 3/4-hihalliset vaatteet ovat sopivia välikausipukeutumiseen ja niin minäkin muistin taas muut kuin villat. Viime vuonna ostelin pariin otteeseen Rowanin Lenpur Lineniä ja sainkin yhdestä neuleesta hihat valmiiksi. Mutta se sitten jäi kun mietin miten teen vartalo-osan (alkuperäinen ohje oli A-linjainen) ja kesäkin loppui ja varvastakin kolotti ja muuta. Kaivoin nyt langat esille - värihän on edelleenkin kaunis - ja ryhdyin neulomaan takakappaletta omilla modauksilla. Kyllä se hieman oudolta näytti mutta sitkeästi neuloin helmineuletta 2.5 mm puikoilla kunnes oli pakko tunnustaa että kaikki nyt ei ole ihan niinkuin pitäisi.

Tästä ei varmaan tarvitse edes kysyä että mikä kuvassa on vikana. Vino se on, aika reilustikin vielä. Reunojen ero pystysuunnassa on yli viiden sentin luokkaa. Ja neuloin sentään helmineuletta minkä pitäisi käsittääkseni hieman hillitä tuota biasoitumista.

Spring came finally and I started to long for something with shorter sleeves. Tops with 3/4 sleeves are very handy as in-between clothes I think, and for those chilly summer days. My mind turned away from wool and I remembered that I had bought some Rowan Lenpur Linen on two occasions last year and I had even finished sleeves from one of the batches. But I had not got any further for my toe ached a bit and the summer was almost over and I had no idea how to make the back piece for the original was A-shaped. Now I dug out the pieces and started knitting the back with my own modifications. I admit, it looked a bit funny but I persevered until I finally had to admit that there's something rotten in the state of lenpurlinenland.

I don't think I even have to ask if you see what is wrong in the above photo. There's quite significant bias, the difference between the points in y-plane is more than 5 cm. And I was knitting seed stitch too which should combat the bias somewhat.

Hihoissa efekti ei ole ihan niin selvä, kyseessä on kuitenkin kapeampi kappale ja tuo keskellä oleva palmikko hämää. Mutta kun vertaa sitä toiseen samasta langasta neulottuun kappaleeseen (hiha vasemmalla), niin eroa noissakin kyllä on. Joku vähemmän jääräpäinen neuloja olisi voinut ehkä tehdä jotain jo siinä vaiheessa kun hihojen lievä vinous tuli ilmi, mutta ajattelin sen johtuvan vain...jostakin, ja että kastelu auttaisi jne.

The effect is not so clear in the sleeves, for the piece is much narrower and the cable in the middle mixes things up somewhat. But when you compare two pieces knitted with the same yarn, the wackyness of the blue seems quite obvious. A less pig-headed knitter might have done something after finishing the sleeves but I thought the slight bias was due to...stuff, and that it would get better once it was blocked.

Laitoin kyselyä langan maahantuojalle, Coatsille, ja lähetin vinoutuneet kappaleet sinne. Langassa on siis selvä vika, mutta vielä ei tiedetä missä se on sillä kappaleet lähtivät Rowanille tutkittavaksi. Minulle tarjottiin tietysti korvauslankaa ja päädyin ottamaan tilalle samaa lankaa samassa värissä, sillä
a) toiset Lenpur Linenit neuloutuvat ihan kauniisti
b) tulleet langat olivat eri värierää
c) tuo Lagoon-väri on todella kaunis sinivihreä enkä ole törmännyt muissa vastaavaan.

Mutta sen sanon että samaa neuletta en aloita uudestaan (Cari-neuletakki Lenpur Linen -kokoelmasta), vaan teen jotain muuta. Lähes loputtomalta tuntuva helmineule 2.5 mm puikoilla ei ole ihan mielipuuhaani, ja muutenkin tuosta neuletakista lähti jotenkin maku, vaikka kaunis se edelleenkin on.

I wrote an email to the importer, Coats, and I ended up sending the biased pieces to them. There's obviously something wrong with the yarn, but they don't know what since they ended up sending the pieces to Rowan for investigation. I was offered replacement yarn of course and I ended up taking the same yarn and colour, for
a) my other Lenpur Linens knit up beautifully
b) the yarn I got were from a different dye lot
c) the colour Lagoon is a very nice greenish blue that I have not come across from other manufacturer.

But I must say that I will not be doing the same cardi again (Cari from Lenpur Linen Collection) for knitting seemingly endless seed stitch with 2.5 mm needles is not my idea of fun. And I lost the appetite for that knit even though it is still a nice design.

Rhombus

Uusi Taito-lehti ilmestyi kuun puolivälissä ja siitä löytyy Ulla-artikkelin lisäksi neljän "Ullalaisen" sukat, josta yhdet ovat minun. Ne kantavat nimeä Rhombus ja saivat nimensä ihan tylsästi vinoneliöstä (wiki-juttu) ja myös siksi koska pidän siitä miltä sana tuntuu suussa.

The new issue of Finnish Taito-magazine came out in the middle of this month and had a story about Ulla and also four sock patterns from four Ulla-actives. One of the patterns is mine, called Rhombus. The name I got from the shape in the socks (wiki-story) and also because I like how the word feels in my mouth.

Kyselyä lehden puolelta tuli jo ajoissa ja koska olen (melkein) aina valmiina kaikkeen niin lupauduin mukaan. Ideoita odotellessa neuloinkin kaikenlaista ja tuntui siltä että Silver Screen-huivin jälkeen päässä ei ollut yhtään omaperäistä neuleideaa. Deadline lähestyi pikkuhiljaa ja oli pakko ruveta toimiin tai luovuttaa (sitäkin mietin kyllä).

The idea came from the magazine quite early and since I'm (almost) always ready for anything I promised to design a pair of socks. Though in the mean time I knitted this and that and I was feeling that after Silver Screen I had no ideas of any knit-kind in my head. The deadline was closing in and it was time either to get to work or opt out (which I was thinking of doing too).

Sitten se alkuidea tuli, sieltä mistä ideat nyt tulevat, ja tällaiset niistä nyt sitten tuli. Langaksi halusin jo alunperin Wollmeisen, ja kevään korvilla keväänvihreä 100% merinoa oleva Zarte Knospe viehätti vihreydellään. Väri on hieman hankala kuvattava ja on todellisuudessa hieman kellertävämpi kuin mitä näistä kuvista voisi luulla.

Then the start of an idea came from wherever ideas come from and here's the result. I knew from the start that I wanted to use one of my Wollmeise yarns for this project and since the spring was approaching this spring-green yarn, 100% merino in colourway Zarte Knospe ended up for socks.

Seuraavalla kerralla neulomisen voisi kyllä aloittaa hieman aikaisemmin, vaikka pää kuinka yrittäisi väittävää ettei sillä ole ideoita. Mutta tulipa selvitettyä että minulta sukkaparin neulominen (2 mm puikoilla), suunnitteleminen ja ohjeiden ja kaavioiden tekeminen ei onnistu ihan viikonlopussa. Vaan se vaati kolmisen päivää intensiivistä neulomista. Sikäli homma sujui hyvin että purkamista ja uudelleenneulomista ei tarvinnut hirveästi tehdä. Tosin aloitin ensimmäisen sukan kahdesti kun ensimmäisestä varresta oli tulossa hieman liian kapea. Mutta mielestäni niistä tuli kuitenkin ihan sievät ja kuviotkin tuntuvat soljuvan ihan kivasti kärkeen asti. Viime hetkeillä tuli mieleen erilainen aloitus sukkiin, mutta maltoin nyt kuitenkin jättää sen tuohon joustimeen enkä ruvennut tekemään mitään virityksiä. Kelvannee se näinkin. Ja sivuhuomautuksena, omia jalkoja on kauhean hankala kuvata.

Next time (if such time comes) I might consider starting the knitting process a bit earlier, no matter how loud my brain complains about lack of ideas. For I found out that I can not manage to knit (with 2 mm needles), desing and write a pattern for socks in a weekend. It took three days of quite intensive knitting to produce this pair. Though all in all the process went quite well for I did not have to rip and re-knit much. I just started the first sock twice when I noticed that the leg-part was far too narrow for me and had to start again. But I think the end result is quite cute and the pattern seems to flow quite nicely from cuff to toes. Though, I had this other idea of how to start the socks but managed to avoid fiddling with them to get them done. So I just went with the ribbed cuff. Just an observation: it is really difficult to photograph ones own feet.

Rowania rajan takaa - Rowan from across the border

Tein yhdessä neuleystävän matkan Tallinnan lankaihmemaahan lauantaina. Matka kulki tuttua reittiä: Karnaluks, Liann ja Pronksi. Päivän aikana tuli ehkä juotua myös kuohuviinilasi tai pari ja poikettua suklaakahvilassa ja häröiltyä yleisesti.

Last Saturday a fellow knitter and I took a trip to Tallinn and its yarn shops. The trip took the usual route: Karnaluks, Liann Longad and Pronksi longapood. During the day we might have enjoyed a glass or two of the bubbly stuff, gone to the chocolate cafe and wandered around a bit in general.

Karnaluks kiinnosti uudella tavalla kun kuulin että he ovat ottaneet valikoimiinsa myös Rowanin lankoja. Niitä sieltä tarttuikin mukaan, nappien ja nepparien ohella. Valikoima Rowanista oli aika laaja laatujen suhteen mutta suppea värien suhteen. Monet tuntuivat olevan niin kovin ei-minua, mutta ostin lopuksi kahta laatua. Rowanin iki-ihanaa Calmeria ostin mustaa (siitä ei kuvaa) paketin, hinta 10 kpl pakkauksessa oli noin 2.60 € / kerä. Villat kun eivät näin kevään korvalla oikein kiinnosta - mohaireista, alpakoista ja kashmireista puhumattakaan - niin toiseksi Rowaniksi päätyi Summer Tweed, väri Exotic (joka ilmeisesti on kuitenkin lopetettu väri). Tätä turkoosia väriä olisin voinut ottaa muutaman kerän lisää, mutta heillä ei ollut tätä enempää, joten täytyi tyytyä 10 kerään. Summer Tweedille kertyi hintaa hieman päälle 3.40 € / vyyhti. Hinnat eivät siis olleet pahat, ollenkaan.

Karnaluks tempted me in a new way since I learned that they had started carrying Rowan yarns. I did buy some of them and also some knick-knacs like buttons. They had quite a few different yarns from Rowan, but the colour selection was quite limited. Most of the colours they had were not really "me", but I managed to buy some. I came away with 10 balls of the always lovely Calmer in black, which ended up costing about 2.60 € / ball. And since the spring is finally here I was not into wool - nor alpaca, mohair or cashmire - my other Rowan purchase was Summer Tweed. I would have bought a few skeins more of this lovely turquoise yarn, Exotic (which I understand is a discontinued colour), but unfortunately 10 skeins was all they had. It cost about 3.40 € / skein. So not bad prices for Rowan.

Tarkoitus oli lopettaa lankashoppailut tähän, mutta Pronksista tarttui mukaan ovelaa lankaa. Lankaa oli vain yhtä väriä, mutta onneksi pidin siitä joten se lähti mukaan. Lanka oli jonkun italialaisen kehräämön (en nyt muista nimeä) ja nimeltä Fuga. Koostumus 50 % viskoosia, 30 % mohairia ja 20 % puuvillaa. Viskoosin ansiosta lanka kiiltää kauniisti ja mohair tuo kivan halon. Yritin kuvata lankaa niin että sen rakenne näkyisi, mutta se oli hieman hankalaa enkä tainnut onnistua kovin hyvin. Väri on kyllä aika hyvin oikea. Valmiissa mallitilkussa tuo mohair-efekti tuli paremmin esiin. Nyt pitäisi vaan keksiä mitä tuosta tekee, minulla on sitä nyt noin 500 g ja se on noin 3-4 mm puikoilla neulottavaa. Pintaneule erottuu kyllä kauniisti ja neulepinnasta tulee myös joustavaa. Tuo maksoi noin 3.5 € / 50 g. Pronksissa oli myös kauniita paksumpia merinoita, mutta se kevät.

I was planning on stopping there with the yarn purchases, but I found a nice, odd yarn in Pronksi that I just had to buy. They had it in only one colour, but fortunately it suited me. The yarn in question is from some Italian mill and is called Fuga and consists of 50 % viscose, 30 % mohair and 20 % cotton. The viscose gives the yarn a lovely shine while the mohair gives the finished piece a nice halo. I tried to take photos so that you could see the structure of the yarn but I fear I did not succeed that well. The colour is however quite true. Now I just have to think of what to make of it. I have about 500 g and the yarn should knit with 3 - 4 mm needles. The yarn shows patterns nicely and the resulting fabric is also a bit stretchy. This cost about 3.5 € / 50 g. Pronksi also had some nice thicker merinos but spring...

Pysähdyimme myös paikallisessa alkossa jossa mukaan tarttui pari kissapulloa viemiseksi keräilijälle. Huomasin että toinen oli rintasyöpä-vaaleanpunainen. Näinköhän koto-Alkossa myytäisiin pulloja moisella lapulla? Itse olisin ostanut suklaata ja ehkä konjamiinia laivalta, mutta kun pääsimme kauppaan niin kassajono oli ovella vastassa. Näinpä jäi Ferrero Rocherit ostamatta.

We also made a pit-stop at one of the locar liquor store where I found these Happy Cat bottles for a collector friend of mine. I noticed one of them carries a breast cancer label. I wonder if our Finnish Alko would sell alcohol with such labels.

Lisää vihreää - More green

Mietiskelin taannoin että mitä tekisin viimeisillä neulekonekurssin kerroilla ja koska en uskonut enää saavani valmiiksi kokonaista neulepaitaa, päätin ottaa työn alle pellavaa. Ostin syksyllä 2008 messuilta kaksi kartiota Lappajärven värjäämön pellavalankaa. Tarkoitus oli tehdä siitä neuletakki, mutta koska mallitilkku oli aika kovaa eikä tuntunut yhdestä pesusta paljon pehmenevän, se jäi varastoon lojumaan. Jokin aika sitten tein koneella samasta langasta kaksi koristetyynynpäällistä äidilleni (niistä tuli aika sievät). Päätin sitten tehdä myös vihreästä tyynynpäälliset samaan osoitteeseen. Malli tällä kertaa sileä, keskelle napit koristeeksi ja tyynyn postoa ja laittoa varten.

Kahdesta kartiosta tuli kaksi tyynyliinaa ja lankaa jäi hieman yli, ei kuitenkaan tarpeeksi kolmatta varten. Täytyy kyllä sanoa, että vaikka lanka oli samaa paksuutta kuin aiemmin, väri vain oli ero, niin lankojen neuloutuvuudessa oli runsaasti eroa. Nyt kelkan liikuttelu oli todella työtä ja melkoisen raskasta. Minun puolestani ko. firman pellavalangat saavat nyt jäädä tähän, tulipa kokeiltua. Jäljestä tulee kyllä siistiä, mutta enemmänkin kodintekstiileihin kuin vaatteisiin sopivaa. Miinusta vielä huonoista lankamerkinnöistä, mistään ei nimittäin saanut selville oliko lanka esikutistettua vai ei (ei ollut).

Viimeistelytyöt ovat vielä kesken, joten kuvaa valmiista tyynyistä myöhemmin.

A while ago I was pondering how to spend the few remaining machine knitting class sessions. I doubted I had time to make a new sweater or cardi, so I decided to get rid of some of my not-so-pleasant yarns. I bought this linen yarn from a fair back in -08 intending to make a cardi out of it. But since it was not really my colour and since the swatch I made didn't get much softer after washing I just laid it aside. But since I made two decorative pillow cases out of the same yarn to my Mom earlier, I decided to make some more for her.

The plan was to make two pieces, simple design, stockinette stitch with button band in the middle, both as a decorative item and for functionality. As I did. Two cones made two pillow cases with a bit left over, not enough for a third one however. The brown and orange yarn went smoothly through the machine and knitting was fine. The green one, however, was another matter. It was exactly the same thickness as the other yarns but didn't go at all smoothly. Moving the carriage was a real pain and not at all pleasant. I think my experiments with the linen yarns from this company have ended. Minus points also to unclear yarn labels. There was no way to know whether the yarn was pre-shrunk or not (it wasn't).

Finishing work is still on-going, so photos of finished items will appear later.

Säälittävää - Pathetic

Julistin perjantaina miehelle suureleisesti että lähden lauantaina shoppailemaan. No, useamman tunnin kaupungilla hortoilun seuraukset ovat tässä: Lundialta välilevyjä laatikkoon, kengät, kaksi pakettia teetä, kaksi kerää lankaa ja hammastahnaa. Aika säälittävää, etten sanoisi.

On Friday I announced to my husband that I was going shopping on Saturday. Well, after several hours the result was this: partitioner boards for a drawer, a pair of shoes, two boxes of tea, two balls of yarn and some toothpaste. A bit pathetic, I'd say.

Ticotico lähti mukaan aika heräteostoksena kun ajattelin tehdä siitä raitapolvisukat. Kengätkin olivat heräteostos, kun alunperin lähdin ostamaan ihania limenvihreitä popoja, mutta en löytänyt niitä enää omaa kokoani. Kuulemma kannattaa olla ajoissa liikkeellä yms., mutta kuka sitä nyt avokkaita talvella ostaa... Ostin sitten tällaiset, miehen mukaan "vähän kuin lenkkarit koroilla". Tilasin kyllä limet ihanuudetkin - Amazonista.

The two balls of Novita ticotico I bought just because I felt like I wanted to knit some striped knee-high socks. The shoes were kind of impulse purchase too, for I had my eye on a pair of lime-green pumps but they did not have my size. Something about buying too late or something, but who goes to buy spring/summer shoes in winter?? So I bought these that my hubby calls "like sneakers but with heels". Though I did get the lime-green beauties - from Amazon.
