Minähän olen, 15. pvä heinäkuuta (juuri ostin lentoliput). Mutta täytyykö minun tehdä se kukkajuttu? Onko se pakollista ja mikä kukka sen pitää olla? Hahaa, Artfibers, täältä tullaan!

Outoja hedelmiä - Strange fruits

Tämmöisiä hedelmiä minun kasveissani kasvaa. Ylempänä on jo aiemmin mainostamani Lang Yarnsin Fantomas superwash (tulossa pusero melkein vuoden ikäiselle tytölle) ja alempana kekkaloi Kid Silk Haze väriä Dewberry (Rowanin liittymislahja). Nyt minäkin pääsen miettimään mitä tekisi Kid Silk Hazesta. En ehkä teekään mukana tullutta huiviohjetta, siinä kun on röyhelöitä reunassa ja minulla on röyhelökammo. Hmmm...mitä voi tehdä kahdesta kerästä Kid Silk Hazea?

This kind of fruits can be found on my plants. The one on the top is the Lang Yarns Fantomas which I mentioned earlier (to become a sweater for about a one year old girl) and the one preening below that is Kid Silk Haze in Dewberry (Rowan membership gift). Now I get to wonder what to make of Kid Silk Haze too. I think I won't do the scarf pattern that was included because it has ruffles on the edges and I do not like ruffles. Hmmm.....what to do with two balls of Kid Silk Haze?

It's a kind of magic

Luulin jo pääseväni viikonloppuna tekemään juhannustaikoja keltaisen roseviiniläikkäisen neuleeni kanssa. Eipä onnistanut. Neule ei tosin enää ole läikikäs, kiitos tahranpoistoaineen, eikä kissasta tullut rukkasia tai makkaraa mutta kaikki ei silti sujunut aivan täydellisesti.

Siis, kerrataan vielä: kyseessä on Novita Maxi-langasta vuonna miekka ja kirves aloittamani neulepusero. Malli on yhdistelmä kahdesta Novitan mallista vuodelta jotain (laiskuus iski, en jaksa nostaa pehvaa tuolilta että kävisin tarkistamassa numeron). Olin tehnyt hihat ja takakappaleen kunnes iski katumus: en oikeastaan pidä keltaisesta. Tai siis, keltainen on ihan nätti väri mutta en vain osaa pitää sitä. Siivouspuuskan iskiessä taannoin löysin muovipussin kaapin kätköistä ja mietin että voisihan sen valmiiksikin tehdä. Jos vaikka värjäisi sitten. Värikin on ostettu, kirkas punainen. Kun langan koostumus on puuvilla/keinokuitu niin värin pitää olla jotain keltaiseen soveltuvaa. Sain etukappaleen valmiiksi aika nopeasti mutta kun kursin puseron kokoon niin totuus iski: hihat ovat armottomasti liian lyhyet. Ja armoton on tässä yhteydessä noin 7cm. Eipä muuta kuin hihat purkuun ja uusi yritys...

I thought I'd make some midsummer magic during the weekend concerning the yellow rose-wine splashed sweater. No such luck. The sweater does not have the splashes any more thanks to a stain removing liquid and neither is the cat mittens or sausage but still things didn't go as planned.

Let's start from the beginning: the sweater in question is made of Novita Maxi yarn and I started it some years ago. I managed to knit the sleeves and the back piece until the reality hit me: I do not actually like yellow that much. Well, that's not true, I do like yellow, I just can't wear it. I found it again when I had one of my rare bouts of cleaning frenzy and I decided that I might as well finish it. And maybe dye it. I already have the colour, a bright red. Because of the composition of the yarn (cotton/acrylic) the dye has to be something that goes with yellow. I finished the front piece quickly but the trouble started once I had sewn the pieces together: the sleeves are way too short. Way here meaning about 7cms. Well, what to do but rip the sleeves and start again...

Hihojen neulomisen lomassa sain sentään lopetettua vaatekaapin siivousurakan. Eihän sitä tullut tehtyäkään kuin pari viikkoa...vaatekasat sängyn vieressä senkuin kasvoivat ja en ole enää viikkoon päässyt sänkyyn muuten kuin päädyn kautta. Jotain oli siis viimeinkin pakko tehdä. Tänään sitten ryhdistäydyin ja järjestin kaapit uuteen uskoon. Huh! Tässä kuva hyllypuolesta. Tätä tilannetta voi vai kaivaten muistella sitten niiden noin kolmen päivän kuluttua kun kaappi on taas kuin hävityksen kauhistus eikä mitään löydy mistään. Jotain hyvää tästäkin seurasi, nimittäin se, että tuli todettua että ei tarvitse ainakaan alennusmyynteihin mennä kun kaapit on jo täynnä. Mutta miten sitten aina tuntuu siltä ettei ole mitään päällepantavaa??

Amongst my sleeve-knitting I managed to finish cleaning my closets. I had been doing that only for a couple of weeks...the piles of clothes by the bed kept getting bigger and I had been able to get to the bed only from the end. So something had to be done. So today I pulled myself and the piles of clothes together and finished the job. Huh! Here's a picture of the shelf side. Something to remember longingly after the couple of days it takes for it to revert back to the state of anarchy that is normal there. Something good did come out of all that namely the fact that I do not have to go to the sales since there's no more room in the closet. But how come it always seems like I have nothing to wear??

Poislahjoitettavien joukosta löysin myös tämän neuleen. Benettonin villaneule jota tuli jossain vaiheessa pidettyä ihan mukavasti mutta sitten se jäi kaappiin marinoitumaan kun se on hieman liian lyhyt lämpöisyyteensä nähden (vyötäröpituinen, eli kylmä ilma tunki alakautta ja kaulus tukahdutti) enkä ikinä oikein tiennyt mitä tuolle kaulukselle olisi pitänyt tehdä. Ehkä se on sama juttu kuin huivit, ne asustehuivit siis, en ikinä oikein tiedä mitä niillekään pitäisi tehdä. Jos yritän kietoa huivia hienosti kaulaani näytän vain siltä kuin minulla olisi kurkkukipu. Mutta takaisin neuleeseen...kun tutkiskelin sitä tarkemmin huomasin että se on italialaista laatutyötä, eli palaset on kudottu muotoonsa ja ommeltu yhteen vasta sitten. Hahaa! Se on siis mahdollista purkaa. Eikun lanka uusiokäyttöön vaan!

From the give-away pile I came across this woollen sweater by Benetton. I did wear it quite a lot at some point but then it just marinated in my closet because it is a bit too short for its warmth (waist length, meaning the cold air got in from the bottom and the collar suffocated) and I never quite knew what to do with the collar. Maybe it's the same thing as with scarves, the dress ones I mean, I never really know what to do with them either. If I try to wrap one elegantly around my neck I always end up looking like I have a sore throat. But back to the sweater. When I took a closer look at it I found that it's Italian quality work meaning that the pieces are knit first and then sewn together. Hahaa! That means that it can be ripped apart. And that the yarn can be re-used!

Iso karvainen sika - Big hairy pig

Katsokaa nyt mitä se iso karvainen sika teki (ja ei, nyt ei ole kyseessä mies vaan se toinen)! Neuloin tyytyväisenä kaapista kaivamaani vanhaa työtä ja laskin sen syliini ottaakseni kulauksen roseviiniä. No eikös se sika, mikä myös kissana tunnetaan, päättänyt juuri sillä hetkellä että "hyppäänpäs tuosta Niinan jalkojen yli toiselle puolelle sohvaa" ja pyyhkäisi hännällään noin puoli lasillista ympäri minua ja sohvaa. Sohvan sai kuivattua, mutta kuten näette, kutimelleni ei käynyt yhtä hyvin. Myönnettäköön, että aikeenani oli värjätä tekele, mutta ei kai sitä näin läiskäisenä voi värjätä? Koetin sitten korjata tilannetta jollain tahranpoistoaineella ja nyt minulla on vihertäviä tahroja. Mahtavaa. Ehkä minulla on kohta myös kissamakkaraa tai rukkaset.

Look what the big hairy pig did this time (and no, I do not mean the man, I mean the other one). I was knitting happily the UFO I found hiding in my closet and I decided to take a sip of rose wine. Well, what do you know, right at the same minute the pig, also known as the cat, decided that it would be a good idea to leap across me to the other side of the sofa while swiping half of the contents of the said glass all over me and the sofa. The sofa is ok but that is not the case with my knitting. I admit, I had toughts of dying this but I can't very well dye it like this, can I? So I thought to salvage the situation with some stain removing stuff and now the stains are greenish. Splendid. Maybe I'll soon have cat-sausage or mittens also.

Vihdoinkin! - Finally!

Tänään oli Leppävaaratapaaminen ja neulottiin taas innokkaasti kahvilassa ja sain lisää lankaa. Jaegerin Shetland Aran-lankaa väriä oranssi (kuvan väri on ihan liian punainen, johtuen innokkaasta salamasta). Kuten Knitting Nana totesi viime kommenteissa, sen täytyy olla joku universaali ilmiö. Minulla onkin teoria: lanka vetää lankaa puoleensa. Siksi sellaiset, joilla on iso lankavarasto *krhm*Marjut/Kristel*krhm* myös kasvattavat varastoaan kiitettävään tahtiin, koska lankavarastolla on jo niin iso gravitaatiomassa että se vetää puoleensa lankaa vaikka maapallon toiselta puolelta ihan eri tahtiin kuin ne joilla on pienempi varasto. Sillä ei kai niin voi olla että he vaan ostavat lankaa koko ajan?

Today was Espoo meet and lots of knitting at a cafe was done and I got more yarn. Jaeger Shetland Aran is the yarn and the colour is orange (the yarn in the photo is much too red because of a flashlight). But as Knitting Nana commented last, it must be a universal conditiona. And I have a theory: yarn attracts yarn. That is why those who have a big stash *cough*Marjut/Kristel*cough* also enlarge their stash at a commendable rate because the stash has so big gravitational mass that it pulls yarn towards itself even from the other side of the globe with a much greater pull that that of a smaller stash. Because it can't be just that they buy more yarn all the time, can it?

And what was waiting for me at home? A letter from the USA. Finally they're her, my Vittadini books! Lots of thanks to the lovely american aunt! Luckily she understood the value of the books because she has taught knitting and other stuff. I must write a thank-you letter to her. And now I feel free to tell the name of the shop I complained about at least here and here. The shop in question is Handworks Gallery. Really bad service and I can't recommend the place to anyone. Maybe it is ok if everything goes well but if there's a trouble there's no service and they're really unhelpful and unco-operative.

Lankaa senkun tulee lisää, eikä entisiäkään ole käytetty. Ystäväni toi Sveitsintuliaisina 200g pehmeänpikkiä Lang Yarnsin Fantomas superwash villalankaa kun lupasin kutoa hänen pikku tyttärelleen (11kk) villapuseron jos hän tuo langat. Kuvaa nyt ei valitettavasti tule kun Hello mököttää eikä netistäkään näytä löytyvän lankaa juuri tuona pinkkinä. Ehkä sitten joskus myöhemmin.

Yarn just finds me and I haven't even used the old ones yet. A friend of mine brought a souvenir from Switzerland: 200 grams of soft pink superwash wool called Fantomas by Lang Yarns. I promised to knit her little daughter (11 months) a sweater if she chose the yarn. No picture now unfortunately, Hello has her knickers in a twist and is off sulking somewhere. Maybe later.

Sain Rowanilta postia tänään: jäsenyyteni on uusimista vailla. Ja nyt olisi liittymälahjana huiviohje Kid Silk Haze-langalle. Värinkin voi peräti itse valita neljästä vaihtoehdosta: sinivihreä, luonnonvalkoinen, musta tai purppura. Nyt vaan heräsi kauhea epäilys: onko Kid Silk Haze katoava lanka myös? Minusta vähän vaikuttaa että Rowan tunkee loppumaisillaan olevien lankojensa viime varastot jäsenilleen. Esimerkkejä: Linen Drape...eipä ole enää, viimeksi olisi olisi ollut Cork-lankaa ja eikös sekin loppunut? Nuo Kid Silk Hazen värit eivät edes ole lopetettujen värien listalla (lähteenä tässä Colourwayn lista). Hmmm....

I got mail from Rowan today: my membership needs renewal. And the free gift this time is a scarf pattern with Kid Silk Haze. And I can even choose the colour from four options: green/blue, off white, black and purple. Now I got a terrible thought in my head: is Kid Silk Haze on the termination list also? It has seemed to me that Rowan has used its members to get rid of stocks for yarns to be finished. Examples: Linen Drape...that's gone, and the last gift was Cork and didn't they discontinue that too? And those colours of Kid Silk Haze are not even on the discontinued colours list (from the list according to Colourway). Hmmm....

Syyttäkää minua! - Blame me!

Siitä että Marjut osti taas lisää lankaa. Lupasin olla syntipukkina tällä kertaa, kun hyödyin itsekin. Eli minulle tuli myös lankaa, Jaegerin Shetland Arania. Hmm..näen mielessäni oranssin Roguen...

Edellisen postauksen sukan kikkanuus jäi vaivaamaan minua enkä uskaltanut aloittaa sille paria. Ajattelin odottaa kunnes sukan vastaanottaja voi sovittaa sitä etten tee turhaa työtä. Äitini mielestä olisin kyllä voinut lähettää sukan hänelle postitse ja hän sitten sovittaa sitä ja lähettää sen takaisin mutta minun mielestä se olisi vähintäänkin omituista...menenhän minä sinne noin kuukauden päästä. En minä kuitenkaan osaisi tehdä siitä tarvittaessa isompaa ohjeilla "no ehkä vähän isompi joo"-tyylillä. Siispä aloitin jotain muuta. (Mutta mitä tapahtui kukkasille? Älkää puhuko minulle kukkasista!) Irlannista tuomani puuvilla/viskoosilanka alkoi jalostautua uusimman Voguen pikkupuseroksi (tätä tekevät myös muut).

The small size of the sock in my last post bothered me and I didn't want to start a pal for it. I thought I'd wait until the recipient of said sock can try it on so as not to do a needless job. My mother thinks I could send the sock to her and she could try it on and then send it back to me but I think it sounds a bit weird...and I'm going there in about a month. And anyway I could not make it bigger if needed with instructions like "well, it could be a bit bigger, yes". So I started something else. (But what happened to flowers? Do not talk to me about flowers!) The cotton/viscose yarn I brought from Ireland started to become a small top from the summer Vogue.

Ja sitten on jo (melkein) loppukevennyksen aika. Hannu kävi viime viikonloppuna Raumalla ja minä sain tuliaisia. Pitsikorvakorut. Sopivat neulojalle, eikös?

And now it's almost time for the entertaining piece at the end. Hannu went to Rauma last weekend and brought me a souvenir. Lace earrings. Suitable for a knitter, no?

Ja "missä pirussa mun Vittadinini ovat"-projekti etenee. Nyt saan (toivottavasti) kirjaseni kotiin, tosin kaupalla ei ole mitään osaa eikä arpaa tähän. Tuttuni soitti sukulaistädilleen joka oli pitänyt kirjat (koska kukaan kaupassa ei ollut kiinnostunut asiasta hänen soitettuaan sinne ja ihmeteltyään kun oli saanut jotain kirjoja mitä ei ollut tilannut) ja hän oli luvannut lähettää kirjat minulle. Jäämme siis odottelemaan niitä. Ja olipa kyllä ystävällisesti tehty.

And my "where the hell are my Vittadini books"-project is still on-going. Now I'll get the books home (hopefully), although no thanks to the shop in question. The friend in question called to her relative in the States who had kept the books (because nobody in the shop was interested when she called there to wonder why she got some books she had not ordered) and she said she'd send me the books. I'll continue to wait. And by the way, that was very nice of her.

Lauantaina KIPpailin minäkin Espoon Tapiolassa ja pääsin Neuletikistä ulos ilman langan lankaa, vaikka Atelier Zitronin Kokon-lanka houkuttelikin. Ehkä sitten myöhemmin... Mutta ei kuvia, koska unohdin kameran olemassaolon Neuletikin jälkeen ja siellä ottamani pari kuvaa olivat tärähtäneitä. Selitystä tapahtumasta löytyy kyllä vaikka täältä ja täältä (se olen minä se punapaitainen etualalla jolla on selkä kuvaajaan päin). Nytpä tekee minunkin mieleni neuloa pitsihuiveja.

I KIP:ped in Espoo, Tapiola on Saturday too and managed to leave the LYS without any yarn, although the Kokon by Atelier Zitron was very, very tempting. Maybe later... But unfortunately no photos, because I forgot I had a camera right after the LYS and the photos I took there were a bit blurry. Account of the day can be found for example here. Now I want to knit a lace scarf too.

Mutta enpä ole istunut tyhjänpanttina minäkään. Sain pitkin hampain aloitettua sukat kipuvillasta. Ja tässä on ensimmäinen valmiina. Sukasta tulee mieleen kaurapuuro...väri on aika sama ja lanka on hieman epätasaista. Kovasti on kikkanan oloinen sukka, mutta minähän vain tein työtä käskettyä. Toivottavasti lanka mahtuu äidin jalkaan.

But I haven't been sitting idle either. I finally started to knit socks from the pain-relief wool I got a while ago. And here's the first one, finished. The texture reminds me of oat-meal. The colour of the yarn is about the same and since it is not all smooth the texture of the finished sock is a bit lumpy. The sock is awfully small-looking to me but I'm only knitting as instructed. I hope the sock fits my mom.

Ostoksia - Been shopping

Tässä uusimpia hankintojani: ihqut kesäkorvikset Muranon lasia, granaateilla höystetyt korvikset ja silmukkamerkkejä (hopeaa, hematiittia ja punaista tiikerinsilmää). Päiviltä nämäkin.

Here are my latest acquisitions: lovely summer earrings of Murano glass, small dangly earrings with red granates and stitch markers (silver with hematite and red tiger eye stones).

Saapumattomien Vittadini-kirjojen saaga jatkuu...ilmeisesti se henkilö jonka kanssa sovin toimitusosoitteen muutoksesta ei työskentele siellä enää (mutta miksi minun tarvitsee se tietää) ja nyt he haluaisivat yrittää saada takaisin niitä väärään osoitteeseen lähetettyjä kirjoja. En kyllä ymmärrä miksi minulle pitäisi kertoa mitään muuta kuin "anteeksi, pahoittelemme, lähetämme uudet kirjat heti oikeaan osoitteeseen". Missään vaiheessa minulta ei ole pyydetty anteeksi eikä pahoiteltu mitään. Hmph!

The saga with the unavailable Vittadini books continues...apparently the person who I corresponded with in regards to the change in delivery address is no longer working there (but why do I have to know that I do not know) and now they'd like to try to retrieve the books sent to the wrong address. I really don't understand why they feel they have to tell me anything else than "we're sorry about the mixup and we'll send you new books right away to the correct address". No-one has at any point told me they're sorry for the inconvenience they've caused me. Hmph!

Kukkasia - Flowers

Mitäpä tein viikonloppuna (paitsi löin tennispalloa lasten pesismailalla kummipojan kanssa ja ostin pari Kivi-lyhtyä, minulla on nyt yhdeksän)? No virkkasin tietenkin! Ja mitäpä minä virkkasin? No kukkia tietenkin!

Kukkien ohje on jostain vanhasta Kauneimmat käsityöt-lehdestä ja näistä oli tehty toppi. Virkkailin innokkaasti kukkia ja totesin että näitähän tulee nopeasti ja eihän siihen nyt niin montaa tarvita...vain jotain 48 tai niillämain...kunnes karu totuus paljastui. Olinkin tuijotellut vain etukappaleeseen tarvittavaa kukkamäärää, nyt pitää siis tehdä ainakin tuplasti lisää (kukkia valmiina 41kpl). Lisätään tähän sitten vielä se tosiasia, että käyttämäni lanka on ohuempaa kuin ohjeessa, eikä kukista tule siis niin suuria kuin niistä pitäisi. Siis...lisää kukkia. Ainakin ne ovat nättejä.

What did I do on my weekend (besides hit a tennis ball with a kid's baseball bat with my godson and buy a couple of Kivi lanterns...I have nine now)? Well, I crocheted of course! And what did I crochet? Well, flowers of course!

The pattern for the flowers is from some knitting/crocheting magazine and a top was made out of them. I crocheted happily and though that it's nice since they are finished quickly and I don't need so much of them...about 48 or so...until the harsh reality was revealed to me. I had only looked at the amounts needed for the front piece of the top and now I have to at least double the amount I have at the moment (finished flowers: 41). Add to this the fact that the yarn I use is thinner than the pattern calls for meaning that the flowers aren't as big as they should be. So...more flowers. At least they're pretty.

Vähän sympatiaa, kiitos - A little sympathy, please

Koko juttu ärsyttää minua niin suunnattomasti että tunnen tarvetta avautua... Ensinnäkin, kiitokset kaikille Cloudin ihastelijoille, minä pidän siitä myös. Löysin jopa yhden jokseenkin sopivan paidan sinne alle.

Ja sitten itse asiaan...tilasin tässä jokin aika sitten Adrienne Vittadinin ohjekirjoja eräästä nimeltämainitsemattomasta paikasta USA:ssa (juttu on vielä kesken, siksi ei nimeä). Koska eräs tuttuni sattui olemaan ko. maassa, ajattelin käyttää häntä hyödyksi ja pyysinkin toimittamaan kirjat sinne (halvemmat postikulut). No, sitten minulle vastattiin että kirjani myöhästyisivät ja saisin ne parin viikon päästä, jolloin ystäväni olisi jo poistunut maasta. Siispä vastasin että okei, mutta toimittakaa ne kirjat tänne Suomeen. "No problem" minulle vastattiin. No, luottokorttia veloitettiin ja kirjoja ei kuulunut. Yhteen tiedusteluun tuli "vastaan kohta"-vastaus (eikä mitään sen jälkeen) ja toiseen ei vastattu ollekaan. Kolmas olikin sitten jo hieman kitkerämmän sävyinen ja siihen sainkin vastauksen: kukaan ei kuulemma ollut kuullutkaan mistään sähköposteista ja juu-uh, kirjat toimitettiin jo aikaa sitten sinne USA:n osoitteeseen. HIENOA! Kyseessä ei nyt ole kuitenkaan mikään kauhea rahallinen häviö, mutta potuttaa vaan niin suunnattomasti kun minulle nimenomaan luvattiin toimittaa ne tänne Suomeen. Juttu on siis kesken vielä, mutta meinaan kyllä vaatia uusia kirjoja tänne tai rahoja takaisin. MUR!

The whole matter bugs me so much that I feel the need to open up here a bit... First I'd like to thank you all who admired my Cloud, I like it too. And I even found a somewhat suitable top to wear under it.

And then to the matter that bugs me. A while ago I ordered some Adrienne Vittadini pattern books from an unnamed place in the USA (the thing is ongoing so I won't reveal the name of the shop). And since an acquaintance of mine happened to be visiting the States at that time I decided to take advantage of her and asked the books to be delivered to an address there. However, I got a reply stating that the books would be delayed and I replied that in that case I want the books to be delivered here and gave my address. "No problem" was the reply. The credit card was charged but books were late in arriving. I inquired after my order twice, and the first email got "I will check this later"-reply (and of course no later checking occured) and the second one got no reply. The third email was considerably less polite and that got an answer of the type "this is the first time I've heard of this" and stated that the books were delivered ages ago to the USA address. GREAT! It isn't a big issue as far as money is concerned, but I'm really irritated at the moment since I was promised that the books would be delivered to Finland. The case is ongoing but I'm going to demand either new books or my money back. GRR!

No, vähän se on kuin tuo Pohjoismainen salainen ystävä-vaihto, mutta tässä on vain yksi salainen ystävä jota sitten viihdytetään. I joined the other day the Secret Pal 5-thing. Well, it's kind of like the Nordic Secret Friend-exchange we had (almost finished) but here you have only one secret friend that you amuse. Maybe it's a bit simpler because I was at times confused what I should send and when and to whom.

Anyway, here's the questionnaire from the website (info for my future Secret Pal). (Only in English this time, sorry).

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?

Umm...I have to confess that I am. At least I prefer natural fibers. If the natural fiber content is over 50% I'm a happy knitter. I tend to stay away from the acrylics.

2. Do you spin? Crochet?

Nope, and yes, but very seldom. I don't have the patience for crocheting.

3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)

Chamomille...and no honey for me. That's about it.

4. How long have you been knitting?

Ages and ages. I had a two-three year break that ended about a year ago. Then I discovered internet and the wonderful online yarn stores and knitting mailing lists and now I'm hooked again :-)

5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Yes I do, but I don't update it really so I won't put it here.

6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)

Well...for one thing, I don't like scented candles because they do tend to be on the strong side. I don't like strong smells. And floral scents tend to react funnily with my skin making them smell a bit odd. So I like fruity and spicy scents. To name a few of my favourite scents: Green Tea by Elisabeth Arden, Laura by Laura Biagiotti, Dalissime by Salvador Dali, Happy by Clinique. And then vanilla is nice and citrus scents.

7. Do you have a sweet tooth?

Yup. Chocolate is nice although I seem to have gone off it a bit. I don't get those chocolate cravings like I did still a couple of years ago. But I do enjoy a good chocolate. I'm not really a candy person.

8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?

I sometimes felt and then I make christmas cards, but that's about it.

9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

Yes, my computer can play MP3s and I even have an iPod. And my taste in music varies greatly depending on my mood...no country and western though, but the bands/artists I like at the moment are: Marilyn Manson, U2, Queen, Garbage, Värttinä (Finnish folk music, modern style), Shivaree, Evanescence, Rammstein, Dido, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Pink, Suzanne Vega, Tom Petty...to name a few.

10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Umm.. that's a difficult one. First, I don't like basic colours, you know, your basic whites and blues and reds, although black is fine. And no yellow...and I'm not too sure about brown either. Reddish brown is sort of nice. I think I prefer autumn colours, muted, like burgundy, forest green, orange...stuff like that. Strong, nice mixed colours. Maybe a bit more on the cold side than overly warm.

11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I have a SO who I've been living with for ages and ages and we have a cat.

12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)

Umm...the supreme ruler of the Universe, of course...oh yeah, and health and friends and I do like to travel a bit too ;-)

13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?

Again, with the multiple answers question. But lately I've enjoyed Rowan Calmer and then I like soft wools (merino, cashmere blends, etc).

14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

Acrylics. And I'm not too crazy about the sort of funky yarns like eyelash or furry. I've done my bit of experimenting with them, thank you very much.

15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?

I'm not obsessed, who said I'm obsessed? I absolutely deny any obsessions here. So no, not overly obsessed here. Though I do seem to be buying pattern books lately.

16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Sweaters and cardigans.

17. What are you knitting right now?

Take a look at the "on the needles"-section of my blog. That is usually quite accurate.

18. What do you think about ponchos?

Ummm....no. I prefer not to. Ok, I have seen some cute crocheted ones but generally they're not for me.

Yeah. Although I do tend to stick with the same old basic pattern.

I have no idea. I dug it out the other day with the idea of finishing it but after taking a good look at it I decided it's for the frogging. But that's at least five years old. Probably older.

24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?

Well...Marvin the Martian absolutely. And Garfield is fun too, and Snoopy. Favourite animal is definitely cat.

25. What is your favorite holiday?

Hmm....Christmas I guess.

26. Is there anything that you collect?

Heh, earrings *g* Oh, I do have nickel allergy, so the hooks have to be either silver or surgical steel (or other precious metals).

27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

Just the Finnish Novita-magazine at the moment.

28. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on?

Oh, lots and lots. But I won't list them here because then I'll just have to go and buy them.

Inspiraation odotusta - Waiting for inspiration

Kirjoitusinspiraationi on täysin kateissa. Uusi Ulla ilmestyi tänään (no, mitä te siinä vielä töllötätte, sinne kaikki, hopi hopi!) ja minä olen kirjoittamassa sinne opastusta italialaisesta aloituksesta. Tarkkasilmäiset ehkä huomasivat aikamuodot...siis kyllä, olen myöhässä, eipä ollut juttu ajoissa valmiina kun kuviakin piti saada. Eilen sitten ostin vihdoinkin jalustan kameraan ja nyt sitä on tullut testailtua. Kuvat ovat valmiina ja juttu on alussa, mutta sitten iski stoppi. Kaikki mitä kirjoitan kuulostaa todella typerältä. Urgh!

My writing inspiration is totally lost. The new Ulla came out today (well, what are you waiting for, go check it out already!) and I'm writing a tutorial for tubular cast-on. And yes, I'm late...the tutorial was not finished on time because I had to get some photos too. Yesterday I bought a small tripod for my camera and today I tested it out. The photos are done and I've started my writing but now I've came to a halt. Everything I write sounds really stupid. Ugh!

Cloud on valmis, mutta ei koottu vielä. Miettiessäni mitä teen seuraavaksi, tein parit tilkut. Kolme siis. Niistä tuli vähän omituisia, sellaisia reppanoita joita vain äiti voi rakastaa. Kaivelin langanloppuja tilkkutarpeiksi ja tietysti ne sitten loppuivat kesken mitä sopimattomimmissa kohdissa. Ja on se uskomatonta miten vaikeaa voi olla neuloa pelkkää oikeaa. Sormet meinaavat väkisin tehdä nurjia silmukoita väliin. Jouduin purkamaan yhden tilkun kun en kestänyt niitä virheitä siellä. Ja oli hankalaa kalibroida tilkkua oikean kokoiseksi. Ensimmäinen oli hulppeat 25cm kanttiinsa. En kyllä ymmärrä kuinka se tapahtui, minullahan oli mittanauha ja kaikkea!

Cloud is finished but not sewn together yet. And while I was thinking what to do next I knitted a couple of squares. Well, three actually. They came out a bit strange, the sort of things only a mother can love. I dug out some leftovers for the squares and of course I ran out of yarn at the most inappropriate times. And it's amazing how hard it is to just knit, the fingers keep doing an odd purl stitch here and there. I had to frog a square because I could not live with the odd purl-mistakes there. In addition to that it took some calibrating to get the square size right (20cm by 20cm). The first square I knitted was a whopping 25cm. I still don't understand how I managed to do that since I do own a perfectly good measuring tape (several actually).

Ja sitten vähän lankamarinaa. Tilkut on tehty Novitan 7-veljestä langasta. Olen jotenkin kuvitellut, että se on näitä jämeriä peruslankoja, jotka pysyvät samanlaisina ajan tappiin saakka. No, ilmeisesti näin ei kuitenkaan ole tapahtunut. Tuo kanervankirjava lanka on uutta 7-veljestä ja se on selvästi ohuempi kuin kaivelemani muut langanloput. Höh! Ei noin saa tehdä!

And then a bit yarn-related whining. The squares are made out of Novita 7-brothers yarn. I've always thought that it's one of those sturdy basic yarns that stay the same through all eternity. Well, apparently this is not the case. The heather-coloured yarn is the newest, a couple of years old and it is noticeably thinner that the odds and ends I dug out for the rest. Hmph! You can't do that!

Neulotaan, neulotaan, neulotaan - Knit, knit, knit your sleeve

Terveisiä täältä hihatehtaalta vaan. Ohjeessa sanottiin että hihanpituus ennen pyöriötä 46cm. Minulla on nyt 50cm. Jokohan pitäisi lopettaa?

Ja kun niitä sinisiä hihoja on täällä näkynyt aiemminkin, niin nyt vaihteeksi taidekuva. Kuva on nimeltään: "Cloudin hiha kurkistaa Ikean Minnen-pussista". Kelpaiskohan tämä Kiasmaan?

Greetings from the sleeve factory. The pattern said that knit 46cm sleeve and then start the sleeve cap. I have 50cm. Maybe I should stop now?

Sunnuntain apatiaa - Sunday apathy

Sunnuntai taas...ja minulla on vieläkin kurkku kipeänä, hieman lämpöä ja aika reippaanlainen päänsärky. Ja huomisillaksi pitäisi saada valmiiksi 10-15 sivua esseetä tuotekehityksestä ja sen arvioinnista kohteena yritys jossa työskentelen. Olen kirjoittanut kuusi. Jipii. No, päivittelenpä tässä sitten blogia odottaessani että särkylääkkeet tekevät mitä niiden pitäisi.

Sunday again...and I still have a sore throat, a slight fever and a bigger than normal headache. And I should finish an essay of 10-15 pages by tomorrow night, and the subject is product development and its assessment in the company I work for. I've written six. Whopee! Well, while I'm waiting for the painkillers to do their job I might as well update my blog.

Sain tänään vieraita Kotkasta, äitini ja veljeni. Äitini ei omista ajokorttia, joten kyydityksestä huolehtii suurelta osin veljeni, minun ollessani Kotkassa minä. Tänään pääsin ajelemaan Espoossa pitkästä aikaa, sillä kävimme Ikeassa. Mukaan tarttui kirjahyllyjä (äidilleni) ja laatikoita (langoilleni). Sain myös lankaa, luonnonväristä Kipuapu silkkivillaa (70% suomenlampaan villaa, 30% silkkiä), jonka pitäisi auttaa kaikkiin vaivoihin liikavarpaista unettomuuteen. Minun pitää kuulemma tehdä näistä sukat, ainakin, ja jotain muuta. Täytyy kyllä myöntää, etten ollut kauhean innostunut kun kuulin asiasta. Ei minulla mitään itse asiaa vastaan ole, mutta olisi se mukava jos minulta kysyttäisiin jotain ennen kuin sitä lankaa ostetaan...pieni huomautus oikeaan suuntaan aiheutti kyllä sen, että myös minä sain ko. lankaa. Voin siis tehdä itsellenikin kaikenparantavat sukat!

I got visitors from Kotka today, my mom and my brother. My mother doesn't drive so the designated driver is usually my brother or me, when I'm in the neighbourhood. Today I got to drive around Espoo because we went to Ikea. We got some bookshelves (for my mom) and some boxes (for my yarns). I also got some yarn, this so called pain-relief silkwool (70% Finnsheep wool, 30% silk) that should cure all ailments from achy toes to insomnia. I'm supposed to knit some socks for my mom, or so I heard. I must confess that I wasn't very thrilled when I was told that...I mean, not that I'm against it as such, it's just nice to be asked first. But a few carefully placed hints got me some of that yarn too, so I can knit myself some all-healing socks too!

Ja re-Cloud on edennyt siihen pisteeseen että nyt pitäisi purkaa hihat ja kutoa ne uudestaan. Toisen hihan olenkin jo purkanut. Tässäpä kuva yläosasta...se näyttää samanlaiselta kuin aiemminkin, mitä nyt on hieman isompi. Nyt se on juuri sopivan kokoinen, joten kaikki se purkaminen kannatti sittenkin. Vielä pitää jaksaa tehdä uudet hihat.

Re-Cloud has progressed to this point. I still have to rip and re-knit the sleeves and I'm done. The body part looks the same as it did before, it's just slightly larger. And now it's just right. All that ripping and re-knitting really paid off. Now all I have to do is the sleeves.

Vanhoja virheitä tai mitä ihmettä olen oikein ajatellut? - Past mistakes or what was I thinking?

Koska uudet kutomukset ovat nyt vähissä (neulon vieläkin Cloudia) ajattelin esitellä vähän vanhoja virheitä ennenkuin ne joutuvat purkutuomion alle.

Eilen illalla muistui mieleeni, että minullahan on yksi melkein valmis neuletakki Novitan 7-veljeksestä odottamassa kokoamista ja reunojen virkkaamista. Ohje on jostain vanhasta Novita-lehdestä, siinä oli keskiliite missä oli perinnepaitoja. Tämä oli nimellä Röijy, siinä tehty luonnonvalkoisesta ja siinä oli kirjava virkattu reunus. No, minä tykästyin malliin mutta päätin tehdä sen mustasta. Homma sitten jäi vähän unholaan siinä vaiheessa kun olisi pitänyt virkata jotain. En nimittäin pidä virkkaamisesta. Siellä se sitten muhi yläkaapissa vuosia ja nyt sitten päätin ottaa härkää sarvista ja tehdä sen loppuun. Tai sitten en. Katselin nimittäin niitä kappaleita vähän uudella silmällä ja eipä oikein hyvältä näytä.

Yesterday evening I remembered that I have an almost finished cardigan made of Novita wool yarn just waiting for sewing and the crocheted edges. The pattern is from an old Novita magazine, from an issue where they presented these traditional sweaters and I liked the one made of natural white wool with colourful crocheted edges. But I decided to make it black. I got a bit sidetracked when it came to the sewing and crocheting part, since I do not care for crocheting much. It lay dormant in a closet up until recently when I decided that I should finish it. Or maybe not. I looked at the pieces again and it doesn't look good.

Look how wide it would be! The brown sweater is loose on me and the back piece is even wider than that. And if you look closely you can see where the sleeves would be (the corner marks the sleeve hole).

And what about the sleeves then? Here's some reference...in the picture there's a normal dpn. I'd like to point out that the pieces have not been blocked and that the pattern is such that it would widen with blocking when flat.

Minäkin laskin nämä, ihan uteliaisuudesta...ehheh, 882. Sarjakuvista laskin tähän mukaan vain ne jotka katsoin kirjoiksi (en siis niitä ohuita albumeita). There's a book meme going around...I got this from Marjut. So let's begin.

Total number of books in your house

Well, I was curious so I counted them...882. And from comics I only counted the big ones that could be considered as books. Most of it is fiction (scifi and fantasy mainly) but there's also cookbooks, knitting books, travel books, study books etc. Hmm...I guess I forgot to count the Dictionary of Modern Finnish here (in several parts).

I got it last Friday, Dean Koontz: The Taking.

The last book you read

I read the above mentioned book already and now I'm reading from the same author Frankestein Book One: Prodical Son. And I'm also reading Stolen from Kelley Armstrong (werewolfs and other mythical creatures).

Well...here's some list:

Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings

I read this from time to time, in Finnish, because I think the translation is great. And because the first time I read the books (at the age of 13-14) I did it in Finnish. Quite an experience.

Stanislav Lem: The Cyberiad and Star Diaries

I read these in Finnish too. I do have the Cyberiad in English, but I prefer the Finnish version. Mainly because I think the Finnish version of the poem that the Electric Bard wrote is better. Anyhow, Trurl and Klapausius are great!

Isaac Asimov: The Robot-books

Douglas Adams: Hitchhiker-trilogy

This I read too from time to time, although I think the first three books are the best (this is a trilogy in five parts, to those unfamiliar with the series).

Terry Pratchett:

My favourites are the two first books ((The Colour of Magic ja Light Fantastic) and all the books about the witches (Granny Weatherwax rules!) and Death.

At this moment though the sad state of the book-holding places (two and a half bookcases, the bedside tables and the bedroom floor) prevents me from finding any particular books, but I'm hoping the situation improves in the near future.
