Objects in the rearview mirror may appear smaller than they are

Liivin (Tallinnasta ostetusta langasta) sain siis väkerrettyä valmiiksi ja sehän näyttää ihan hienolta, eikös? Toim. huom. Huomasin vasta kuvan ladattuani että otin kuvan takapuolesta, mutta eihän se haittaa, kaula-aukko on edestä vain vähän syvempi, muuten se on samanlainen.

The vest (made with Tallinn yarn) is finally done and it looks quite nice, doesn't it? Just a note - I noticed after uploading the picture that it is the back side, but that doesn't matter much since the only difference with the front side is that the neck is a bit deeper, that's all.

Mutta se on väärin! Jos tarkastellaan asiaa uudestaan "sabluunan" avulla huomataan että liivi mistä piti tulla pieni ja niukka onkin itseasiassa sarjaa leveä kuin ladon ovi. Juupa juu, ribbiosa hämäsi sopivasti ja sen jälkeinen sileä pullautti kappaleen muodottomaksi. Eikä siinä ole kuin noin kolmisen senttiä ylimääräistä molemmilla puolilla. Ilmeisesti luulen olevani isompi kuin olenkaan.

But it is wrong! If we look at the same vest again but with a "sampler" we'll notice that the vest that was supposed to be small and tight is actually more of the order of "made for a whale". Yeah, the rib part got me on the wrong track (it seemed small) and the stockinette after that managed to get the thing out of shape. There's about three sentimeters extra on both sides. Apparently I think I'm bigger than I actually am.

Mutta mitäs nyt sitten? Minulla taitaa olla kolme vaihtoehtoa, josta yksi (puretaan) ei oikeastaan tule kuuloonkaan joten kumpi seuraavasta olisi parempi: 1) otetaan ompelukone käyttöön ja tehdään sivusaumat 2) neulotaan koetilkku, kokeillaan sen huopuvuutta ja ehkä huovutetaan koko liivi? Mielipiteitä/kokemusta?

But now what? I think I have three options, the one of which (rib-it) is not really an option for me so which one is better then: 1) use the sewing machine and make side-seams 2) make a swatch, test how it felts and maybe felt the whole vest? Any opinions/experience?

Ja tässä esitteillä tämän vuoden paras kampaukseni. Yritin saada hienoa punasävyä mukaan kuvaan mutta ei se nyt ihan onnistunut. Saas nähdä, tämän ei kuulemma pitäisi muuttua vaaleanpunaiseksi koska kyseessä on tavallinen kestoväri eikä mikään hapettimella ryyditetty raitaväri. Tosin ei sen noin kirkkaaksi olisi pitänyt tulla, joten taidan olla vielä vähän epäilevällä kannalla kun hiukseni taitavat olla vähän omapäiset.

And here's the best haircut of the year. I tried to get the lovely red areas into picture but I didn't quite succeed. We'll see what happens, but I'm told this shouldn't turn pink because its made with normal permanent colours and not with stripe colours with oxidizers. But then again it shouldn't have been that bright so maybe I'll see what happens since my hair seems to have a mind of its own.

Uusi vuosi, uudet kujeet - New year, new tricks

Hyvää uuttavuotta kaikille! Ja kiitokset kannustavista kommenteista. Voi olla että palailen asiaan jahka ensin selvittelen mikä käsiäni vaivaa. Mutta parin viikon neuletauko on ainakin tehnyt hyvää, sekä käsille että ihan omalle päällekin. Neulojana kun olen sellainen että lopputulos pitäisi olla heti nähtävillä ja homma rupesi muistuttamaan enemmän suorittamista kuin harrastusta. Mutta nyt päässä pyörii ideoita neuletakista, siitä täydellisestä ja ihanasta sellaisesta jota pitäisi päästä toteuttamaan heti paikalla. Ehkä kuitenkin tarvitsen jotain konkreettisempaa ja neulekirjojen ja lehtien selailua ennenkuin rupean heilumaan puikkojen kanssa.

Happy new year for everyone! And thank you for the supporting comments. I may get back on some people after I find out what the matter is with my hands. But a couple of week's knitting break has done good, for my hands and for me also. I'm the type of knitter who likes the end result more than the actual journey so I feel like I have to have things finished now if not sooner and the thing started to feel more like a chore than a hobby. But now my head is filled with ideas about a cardi, the perfect and just right that I should start making right now. Perhaps I need something a bit more concrete first and time to go over some of my knitting books and magazines before I let loose with the needles.

Eräs asia joka viime vuoden aikana on ottanut pannuun useammankin kuin kerran on se että kirjoille (ja neulelehdille) ei tässä talossa ole tarpeeksi tilaa. Kirjoja on pinoissa olohuoneessa kirjahyllyn päällä, makuuhuoneessa sängyn vieressä, useammassa kerroksessa olemassaolevissa kahdessa kirjahyllyssä ja epämääräisinä kasoina siellä, täällä. Mutta nyt asiaan on tulossa parannus! Kävimme torstaina Lundiassa tuhlaamassa pienen omaisuuden (tai no, ei me vielä mitään olla maksettu) ja 20. päivän jälkeen täällä pitäisi olla uudenlainen palapeli. Lopputuloksena pitäisi olla tilaa kirjoille ja kahdelle tietokoneelle. Jesh, jo oli aikakin.

One thing that has bugged me during the last year more than once has been the fact that there is simply not enough room in this house for books (and knitting magazines). There are books piled on top of the livingroom cabinet, on the bedroom floor and in two layers in the existing two bookcases and, well, it seems like we have books practically everywhere. But now there's going to be an improvement! On Thursday we went and spent a small fortune (well, we haven't paid it yet) on some bookcases and after 20th there should be a new kind of puzzle here. And after assembly we should have enough room for books and two computers. Yesh, it was about time.

Mutta koska oloni on tuntunut tänään hieman raihnaiselta - liukastuin eilen oikein kunnolla ja kipeän reiden lisäksi tuntuu siltä että olen reväyttänyt vielä jotain lihaksiakin - en esittelekään lupaamaani liivintekelettä vaan viimeisimmät lankaostokset. Marjut ja minä tilasimme lankaa Seasonstorelta. Paketin tulo kesti älyttömän kauan ja juuri kun olin menettämässä hermot niin se tulikin. Laatikko oli peloittavan kokoinen mutta lankamäärä ei onneksi ollutkaan niin suuri, se oli vain puolillaan lankaa. Minulle tuli kuvassa näkyvä petroolinsininen Tusshena ja värikkäitä ja mustia Silana-keriä. Kun en sitten osannut päättää väriä niin tilasin yhden kerän oranssia, magentaa, petroolia ja kiiviä ja loput mustaa. Silana on kyllä aivan syötävän ihanan pehmeää (70% merinoa, 30% silkkiä) ja siinä on silkkinen kiilto. Täydellistä.

But because I've been feeling a bit under the weather today - I slipped and fell quite spectacularly last night and on top of a bruised thigh I feel like I've sprained some muscles - I won't show you a picture of the finished vest like I promised. Instead you'll get a photo of my latest yarn purchase. Marjut and I ordered yarn from Seasonstore. The packet took ages to get here and just as I was about to loose my patience it got here. The box was alarmingly large but the amount of yarn wasn't so huge, it was about half full. I ordered the petrol Tusshena show in the box and also different colours of Silana. I couldn't decide on the colour so I ordered one ball of orange, magenta, petrol and kiwi each and the rest in black. The Silana is a very lovely yarn, all soft (70% merino wool, 30% silk) and with a lovely silky sheen. Perfect.

Vastoinkäymisiä - Obstacles

Tässä on tullut vähän hiljaiseloa vietettyä joulun ja muunkin vuoksi. Kun kovasti vaikuttaa että nyt on tapahtumassa se käsinneulojan painajainen, eli kädet ei kestä. Sormet ovat kipeytyneet...ei, en ole vielä käynyt lääkärillä mutta tuskin kyse on kuitenkaan mistään minkä voi parantaa syömällä enemmän suklaata - olen kokeillut. Mutta oli perimmäisenä syynä sitten mikä tahansa, niin näyttää kuitenkin siltä että neulomista ei voi jatkaa ainakaan normaaliin tahtiin enää.

I've been living a bit quietly lately because of christmas and all. It very much seems that the worst that can happen to a knitter is about to happen, meaning that my hands are not up to it anymore. My fingers are starting to ache...and no, I haven't been to the doctor yet but I doubt it is something that can be fixed by eating more chocolate - I've tried. But whatever the reason is it seems that I can't go on knitting as much as I've been doing lately.

Joten pienoisen itsesäälikohtauksen (ja suklaansyönnin, älkää unohtako suklaata) jälkeen olen tullutkin seuraaviin johtopäätöksiin:

• Käsin en neulo enää kenellekään muulle mitään, turha pyytää (äidinkään), itselleni vaan, itsekäs sika!
• Neulonta-aikaa vähennettävä, ohuet langat pois jos jotain haluaa valmiiksikin, paksumpaa kehiin (ei mitään sikapaksua kuitenkaan).
• Jotain muuta tarttis keksiä, sano.

"Jotain muuta"-osiota edustaa haaveilut neulekoneesta. Juu, tiedän että se ei ole samaa kuin käsinneulonta ja juu, siinä ei ole sitä "istutaan sohvannurkassa leffaa töllöttämässä ja neulomassa"-aspektia, mutta uhrauksia on tehtävä. Siis todellakaan ikinä ei mieleen tullutkaan että lopetanpa tässä nyt kylmästi kaiken ja myyn koko lankavarastoni muualle. Siellä on ihan liian ihania lankoja muille jaettavaksi! Surffailun ja pähkäilyn jälkeen mielessä on kuva Silver Reedin neulekoneesta keskivahvoille langoille (SK 860). Mutta en ajatellut sitä heti rynnätä ostamaan, pitää päästä kokeilemaan neulekonetta ensin. Blogin luonnekin varmaan muuttuu tässä, ainakin äkkiseltään vähemmän neulontaa ja enemmän jotain muuta (mitä, sitä en vielä tiedä), mutta sellaista se elämä on.

So after some bitching and moaning (and chocolate consumption, let's not forget that) I've come to following conclusions:

• No handknitted items for anyone else but me from now on, no use asking about it (and that includes my mom also), all for me, selfish pig that I am!
• Must decrease the knitting time, no fooling with very thin yarns if I want to finish something, but play with thicker yarns from now on.
• Some other options.

The "some other options" I've been thinking about include getting a knitting machine. Yeah, I know it's not the same as hand knitting, it hasn't got that same "sitting on the sofa watching tv and knitting"-feel but sacrifices have to be made. I'm not yet up to thinking that I'll just quit alltogether and sell my stash. No way! I've got too many lovely yarns to give up to someone else. After some thinking and surfing I've got an image in my mind of Silver Reed knitting machine for mid-gauge yarns (SK 860). But I'm not planning on just going out and buying the thing, first I have to try machine-knitting. The nature of this blog is bound to change too, less hand-knitting and more something else (what, I don't know yet) but that is life.

Joulua odotellessa - Waiting for Christmas

Lupasin eilen, tai oikeastaan tänään, että seuraavassa postauksessa esitän Berten lahjan ja viimeiset lankaostokset. Ja eikun asiaan - ensimmäisenä pohjoismaisen salaisen ystävän lahja, joka tuli Norjasta asti. Sain Paul Bonner-tontun ja suklaata, mutta koska suklaa on jo syöty niin siitä ei kuvaa. Tässä tonttu patsastelee japanilaisen kissan seurassa.

I promised yesterday - or actually today - that in my next post I'd show you Berte's gift and my latest yarn purchases. So, here as promised: first, the present from my nordic secret friend from Norway was a Paul Bonner troll and some chocolate which I ate already. Here the troll is posing with a japanese cat.

Ja tässä hammaslääkärilohdutuslankojen seurassa. Juu-uh, kuten mainitsin, niin viime viikon sunnuntaina onnistuin irroittamaan paikan hammaslangan avulla. Ja näinhän ei normaalisti pitäisi käydä...soitinpa siis maanantaiaamuna hammaslääkäripäivystykseen. En ilmeisesti olisi saanut soittaa akuuttiaikaan (7:45) koska tilanteeni ei kuulemma ollut akuutti (jaa-ah, on se nyt aika akuuttia olla ilman paikkaa minun mielestäni) ja siksipä minun olisi pitänyt soittaa vasta kymmenen jälkeen ja tiedustella josko olisi ollut mahdollista saada aika vielä samana päivänä. Akuutin asteen määritteli kipu ja särky...tosin jos olisin jonkin aikaa heilunut ympäriinsä reikä hampaassa niin eiköhän siitä olisi akuutti tullut ja sittenhän se vasta olisi ollut kivaa mennä hammaslääkäriin. Sain kuitenkin peruutusajan ja hortoilin ympäri Leppävaaraa etsimässä oikeaa paikkaa (mitä sitä turhaan karttoja katsoo kun tietää mihin menee - tai niin ainakin luulee). Löysin kuitenkin perille ja sain kuulla että paikan alla oli muhinut uusi reikä joka sitten irrotti edellisen paikan. Ugh. Kaksikymmentä minuuttia ja ilman puudutusta myöhemmin minulla oli uusi paikka.

En kyllä ymmärrä tätä puudutusinnostusta, ne pari hassua kertaa kun minulle on ala-asteen jälkeen tarvinnut hampaille jotain tehdä niin aina ovat olleet puudutusta tarjoamassa. Ei kukaan kyllä moista edes ehdottanut kun koulussa olin...ovatko aikuiset sitten sen verran kipuherkkiä vai eikö lapset tarvitse puudutusta sitten? Itse ymmärrän puudutuksen tarpeen isommissa operaatioissa mutta vaivaisen rei'än paikkaamisessa se on mielestäni hieman overkilliä koska siinähän puutuu tuntikausiksi puoli naamaa.

No, siitä sitten sinkosin joululahjaostoksille ja rääkätty hampaani äityi sitten parin tunnin päästä muistuttelemaan kärsimästään lievän säryn muodossa. Siispä tarvitsin jotain pehmeää ja Menitasta tarttui mukaan ihanaa meleerattua omenanvihreää Dropsin Alpakkaa kun sitä olin kuolannut jo pidemmän aikaa. Kiseleffin basaarista Sypressistä näköhermoon iski sitten petroolinsininen kaveri ja olin myyty. Tai siis minulle myytiin...kaappasin viimeiset kerät jonkun raukan kanssaneulojattaren nenän edestä melkein. Olisin mielelläni antanut kerän pois mutta kun sitä oli vain 400 grammaa jäljellä ja en ollut ihan varma kuinka paljon tarvitsisin. Olenko siis kauhea ihminen kun pidin kaiken itse? Enpä tiedä...mutta miten sitä sitten olisikaan potuttanut jos lanka olisi loppunut kesken??

And here the troll is with my after-dentist consolation yarns. As I mentioned last week on Sunday I managed to dislocate a filling with dental floss. And that is not something that's supposed to happen...so on Monday I phoned the county dentist appointment number. Apparently I shouldn't have phoned at the acute time (7:45) because according to them I wasn't having any acute problems (ah-hah, but I happen to think it's quite acute to be without a filling when there should be one) and thus I should have called only after ten to inquire after the possibility of obtaining an appointment at the same time if there was any left. The definition of "acute" was pain and swelling...though a couple of days with an open hole in my tooth and I probably would have qualified as an acute case and boy would the dentist appointment been fun then. But they graciously gave me a cancelled appointment and after wondering around Leppävaara a while (why consult the map when you know where you're going - or think you do) I found the place and I heard that there was a new cavity festering under the filling. Ugh. But about twenty minutes and without any local anesthesia later I got a brand new filling.

I don't understand all that fuss about local anesthesia. I mean, the couple of times after school when I've had some work done to my teeth they've always offered to stick me with needles. But nobody offered such treatment when I was in school (or still had my baby teeth, not much drilling after that)...are the grown-ups more prone to feeling pain or is it just that kids may suffer? I understand the need for numbing with larger operations but not with a simple cavity filling. I think it's a bit of an overkill and you end up with half your face feeling numb.

Well, after the dentist I went off to do some christmas shopping and after a few hours the poor tooth started to remind me what was done to it and it started to ache. So I needed something warm and soft to take the edge away and I went to my local LYS and got a lovely apple green alpaca yarn that I had coveted after a couple of time previously. Later in some other shop its petrol blue sister managed to hit me straight in the optic nerve and I was sold. Or I was sold to, actually, and I stole all the remaining petrol blue alpaca almost straight under a fellow knitter's nose. I would have happily donated a ball away but they only had 400 grams of the stuff and I wasn't really sure how much I'd need. Does that make me a terrible person then? I'm not sure...but imagine how I would have felt if I had run out of it when knitting.

Melkein täydellinen muodonmuutos - Almost perfect transformation

Viimeinkin päivitystä, ja syitä miksi ei ole mitään tullut aikaisemmin on tietysti paljon ja erilaisia. Mm. taikajakun kuvan possumaisuus aiheutti sen että kuvaa ei tullut. Enkä sitten saanut parempaakaan kuvaa otettua, odotin vapaapäivää ja valoisampaa, mutta eihän siitä mitään tullut. Ei täällä taida ikinä valoisaa olla, tai sitten aurinko paistaa pari minuuttia juuri silloin kun on töissä. Viikonloppunakin on ollut niin pimeää, mutta ehkä se siitä, vähitellen.

At last an update and the reasons why I haven't written anything before are numerous and various. For example I was too horrible looking in the magic cardi picture that I didn't want to post it and neither did I manage to get a better one. I waited for the day off and a better light but that didn't happen. There's never any light here or then the sun shines its couple of minutes when I'm at work. This weekend it was also very dark but maybe it'll get lighter, eventually.

Eilen kärsin pikaisesta flunssasta (outoa, tänään jo melkein normaali olo) ja vietin aikaa sohvalla neuleen seurassa. Mystery Shawl 2:n alku on jo melkein muotoutunut uuteen liivimäiseen olomuotoonsa. Täytyy sanoa että pidän tästä kyllä enemmän kuin siitä huivintekeleestä. Värit ovat kauniit ja vaihtuvat sopivan liukuvasti ja harvakseen. Lankana on Tallinnalainen villalanka, ja vaikka pidänkin liivistä niin en oikein tiedä vieläkään mitä langasta pitäisin. Sen yletön rasvaisuus ja ruohonkorret ja muut roskat alkavat jo nyppimään. Onneksi liivi on kohta valmis jotta pääsen neulomaan jotain vähemmän ihraista.

Yesterday I suffered from 24-hour flu (I'm much better now) and spent the day on the sofa watching tv and knitting. The start of the Mystery Shawl 2 has almost completed its transformation into a slipover. I must say that I like this for of its existance better than the previous. The colours are lovely and the colour period is nice and long. The yarn is some Estonian wool I got from Tallinn a while back and even though it makes a nice garment I'm still not sure if I like the yarn or not. The greasiness and the amount of dry hay and other bits starts to bug me a little. Luckily the thing is finished soon so I can go on to something less fatty.

Just joo - Yeah, right

Päätin siis tehdä Kirin ja alkaa orpolangalla ensimmäiseksi (kiitos kommenteista). Mutta sen sijaan että niin olisin tehnyt tänään, aloitinkin jotain muuta - tietysti. Mystery Shawl 2 jota tein kolmen vinkin verran, meni purkuun ja aloitin liivintekelettä. Minulla on pari mukavaa silkkistä paitapuseroa ja kun en ole oikein paitapuseroihmisä ajattelin että näin niitä voisi tulla pidettyäkin. Mallin repäisin jostain Vogue Knitting-lehdestä, mutta en ole vielä varma apinoinko siitä muuta kuin silmukkamäärän ja joustimen, sen näkee sitten kun työ hiukan etenee. Ohjeesta poiketen neulon liivin pyörönä kun muuten voisi väri vaihtua hiukan harvakseltaan. Nytkin tulee aika leveät raidat, mikä tietysti on mukavaa. Taikajakku on valmis, siitä kuva varmaankin huomenna.

I decided to make Kiri and start with the odd-ball (thank you for the comments). But instead of doing just that I did something else - of course. The Mystery Shawl 2 that I had made for three hints, was ripped and with that yarn I started a little pullover-thingy. I have a couple of nice silk blouses which I don't normally use (they're just not my thing) and I thought that this way I might be able to wear them. The pattern is from some issue of Vogue Knitting but I'm not sure if I'll follow the pattern other than with the stitch count and ribbing, I'll see when I make more progress. The pattern calls for knitting in flat but I decided to do it in the round because I thought that the colour changes would be a bit too few apart. And the stripes look like they will be quite wide as it is now, which I like. The magic cardi is finished at last, pictures to follow, probably tomorrow.

Ja huomisesta puheenollen...päätin pitää vapaapäivän ja mennä jouluostoksille, tiistai kun on itsep-eikun itsenäisyyspäivä ja mikä sen hauskempaa kuin pitkä viikonloppu. No en mene, en. Arvatkaa mitäpä teen huomenna? No menen tietysti hammaslääkäriin (jee). Äsken hammaslangan kanssa pelleillessä sain onnistuneesti singottua hampaan kyljessä sijainneen paikan lavuaariin. And speaking of tomorrow...I decided to have a day off and do some christmas shopping since Tuesday is our independence day and I do so like a long wekend. Well, I'm not going, after all. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow? I'm going to the dentist (yippee). When I was flossing just a while ago I managed to sling a filling from a side of a tooth to the sink. Ugh, that is that then, tomorrow I'll wake up around seven and start calling for an appointment at 7:45. Oh, joy.

Aloitusvimmaa - Startitis

Koska minulla ei ole mitään neulomista - taikajakku on melkein valmis, Eris etenee, silkkihuivi on mukana kuljetettava pikkutyö, kelttijakun toisen etukappaleen kuviot häviksissä, mysteerihuivi 2 purkua vaille ja kukanyt talvella virkkaa kukkasia kesäjuttuun - niin tarvitsen ehdottomasti jotain uutta neulottavaa. Ostinkin tämä mielessäni pari päivää sitten kerän Kid Silk Hazea väriä Dewberry työkaverilta (juu, täältä miehisyyden linnakkeesta löytyy neulovia muitakin kuin minä) niin siitä pitäisi saada jotain.

Tietenkin yksi kerä on eri värjäyserää kuin ne kaksi muuta, mihin olin täysin valmistautunut, mutta nyt onkin pulmana että mitäs sitten?

Eli, perjantain kysymys kuuluu: Mitä ihmettä sitä neuloisi seuraavaksi ja miten?

Since I don't have anything to knit - the magic cardi is almost finished, Eris is progressing, the Hana scarf is to be kept as take-along project, the front celtic rope pattern for celtic Bliss is missing, Mystery Shawl 2 is waiting for ripping and whoever wants to crochet flowers for a summer thing in winter - I feel that I absolutely must start something new. This in mind I bought a ball of Kid Silk Haze in Dewberry from a co-worker (yes, I found a fellow knitter in this fortress of manliness) so now I have three to play with.

And interactivity being one of the hip words of today I thought I'd give it a try. Here's a questionnaire in two parts:

Part 1: What next?

Well, one can do plenty with three balls of Kid Silk Haze but so far I've narrowed my choises dow to two:

You can suggest me something else too.

Part 2: How?

Of course one of them is from different dye lot, I was expecting this, but now I have a problem with how to place it.

Tässä on jotain jujua - I'm onto something here

Jups, omituinen neuleviritelmä on ollut koneessa lyhyessä 60 asteen ohjelmassa pyyhkeiden kanssa nyt kaksi kertaa. Vaikka hienoista huopumista on tapahtunut, niin en kyllä saanut sitä niin paljon huopumaan kuin mallitilkkua (juu, se tehtiin kaksinkertaisena myöskin). Lisäksi kuten kuvasta näkyy niin kärkiosa ei ole huopunut edes sen vertaa kuin varsiosa, joten muoto on hieman nuijapäämainen. Mutta selvästi tässä on ideaa! En siis olekaan täysin mieltä vailla, vaikka välillä siltä saattaa vaikuttaakin. Huovutuskokeilussa tulee pakostakin parin päivän tauko (elämä häiriköi) joten seuraavaa operaatiota pääsen kokeilemaan vasta viikonloppuna. Ohje ei siis taida ehtiä jouluylläriin ja voi vaatia vielä lisää tuotekehitystä, mutta kyllä se siitä. Olen toiveikas. Ostan vaikka helpommin huovuttuvaa lankaa jos muu ei auta.

Jeah, my strange-looking knitting thingy has been in the washing machine twice at 60C short cycle. Although there has been some felting I haven't been able to get it to felt nearly as much as the swatch (it was made with doubled yarn also). Also as can be seen from the picture the finger end of the mitten hasn't felted even that much as the mouth part and as such it does bear a slight resemblance to a tadpole. But I'm clearly onto something here! I haven't completely lost my mind yet even though it might seem so at times. My felting experiments have to take a break for a couple of days (life happens) and I'm able to try again next time on the weekend. So I'm not sure the pattern will be in time for the christmas Ulla and my idea might need a little more development but I'll get there. I'm hopeful. I'll just buy some yarn that felts more easily if nothing else helps.

Outo neule - Weird knit

Tämmöistä olen täällä puuhaillut viime päivät (ja ei, taikajakku ei ole vielä valmis, hihoista uupuu pari senttiä). Varpaat on kuvassa mukana ihan mittasuhteiden vuoksi ja kuten näkyy, se on outo ja iso! Tästä oudosta ja isosta pitäisi saada aikaiseksi pystyraidallinen kinnas. Jos se onnistuu niin ohje tulee seuraavaan Ullaan (joulunumeroon). Jos ei niin hautaan sen sohvan alle enkä puhu siitä mitään. En ikinä. Huomenna on pesukoneen vuoro...nyt voisin mennä ompelemaan tuon kiinni. Ha!

This is what I've been up to lately (and no, the magic cardi is still not finished, it's lacking a few centimeters on the sleeves). The toes are in the picture just to give some sense of perspection and as you can see, it's big and weird. This big and weird is supposed to become a vertical striped oven mitt. And if it does become that the pattern will be in the next Ulla (christmas special), if not, I'll just bury it under the sofa and will never mention it again. Ever. Tomorrow it's the washing machine treatment...and now I could go and sew that thing up. Ha!

Joulun aikaa - Christmas time

Hyvää ensimmäistä adventtisunnuntaita kaikille! Viikonloppu on (taas) mennyt enemmän ja vähemmän vauhdikkaissa merkeissä, niinpä jopa etten (taaskaan) ole paljon neulonut.

Perjantaina pidettiin hauskaa työporukalla, tosin meitä oli vain kuusi paikalla. Mutta hauskaa oli kuitenkin...ja lauantai alkoi sillä että kävin hakemassa kännykän työpaikalta. Kaikessa lähtökiireessä se jäi pöydälle. Huomasin sen taksissa, mutta en sitten kehdannut olla dramaattinen ja vaatia autoa kääntymään takaisinpäin. Tosin jos olisin tiennyt miten kauhean huonosti töihin päin pääsee meiltä bussilla olisin sen voinut jopa tehdä. Mutta sainpa ihailla taideteosta bussipysäkillä. Jesh, täällä on lunta.

Merry first advent Sunday for everyone. The weekend was (again) more or less busy so I didn't have so much time to knit (again).

On Friday we had fun at work amongst our team although there were only six of us present. But we did have fun...so much so that I had to start Saturday by going back to the office to get my cellphone. I had left it there in all that hurry to get going. I did notice it on the taxi but I didn't want to be a drama queen and demand that we should return to get my phone. Although if I had known how difficult it is to get to the office during the weekend by bus from where we live I would have done it. But I got to admire contemporary art at the bus stop.

Sieltä matka jatkui Kallioon Ullan pikkujoulujen järjestelyihin ja itse tapahtumaan. Vietimme ne Rosa Matildassa ja Ulla-faneja oli paikalla yhteensä kahdeksan. Söimme, joimme ja neuloimme ja ilta oli mukava. Ensi vuodeksi sanon vain yhden sanan: pitopalvelu. Koska en ottanut yhtään kuvia vaikka minulla olikin kamera mukana, saatte ihailla lumista iltamaisemaa.

From there the journey continued to Kallio to organize Ulla's christmas party and later to enjoy said party too. This year we had them at a small knitwear boutique and yarn shop Rosa Matilda and there were eight of us Ulla-fans present. We ate, drank and knit and had a nice evening. For next year I have but two words: catering service. Since I didn't take any pictures at the event itself even though I did have my camera with me you'll just have to be content with a snowy evening shot.

Ja kyllä, koska kaupassa myytiin lankaa niin sitä tarttui myös minullekin mukaan pari kerää. Schoppel Wollen Samos-lankaa (83% villaa, 17% polyamidia) kaksi kerää, päämäärä huivi.

And yes, since it was a yarn shop too I also bought some yarn. Two balls of Schoppel Wolle Samos (83% wool, 17% polyamid) destined to be a scarf.

Oh, baby how can you be so cruel?

Kappale josta poimin otsikon on soinut päässäni koko päivän ja tuntui sopivan fiilikseen mikä vallitsi kun kamerasta loppui akku juuri ennen mahtavan kuvaussession alkua. Oi, minulla oli niin valtaisia suunnitelmia, suorastaan megalomaanisia, aristokraattisia, korkeasfäärisiä ja upeita. Olisi ollut neuleita ylhäältä, alhaalta ja vähän vaikka sisältäkin, värejä koreita, maireita ja vähän tylsempiäkin. Sen kaltaisia ei täällä ole koskaan nähty eikä varmaan tulla näkemäänkään. Upea tilaisuus meni ohi, voi mikä kurjuus!

The piece of music I got the title from has been playing in my mind all day and it seemed to fit the mood I was in when the battery in the camera decided to give up just before a great photo session. Oh, I had so huge plans, positively megalomanic, aristocratic, not pathetic and even great. I would have shown you knits from above, below and even a bit from the inside, colours galore, even more and maybe a bit dull too. The likes of which have never been seen here before and likely will not be seen after this. A wonderful opportunity missed, oh, the misery!

Sen sijaan näytän huonosti painshopatun kuvan rintaneulasta jonka löysin toissapäivänä. Nyt pitäisi vaan saada taikajakku kokonaan valmiiksi.

Kävin minäkin tarkastamassa vihdoin Helsingin uusimman lankakaupan, FiinaNeuleen (Freda 42), Marjutin kera. Yhdyn minäkin mielipiteeseen että mainiossa paikassahan kauppa on, totta. Palvelusta en oikein osaa vielä sanoa juuta enkä jaata. Totta, meidän tekemisiämme tarkkailtiin, mutta olimme tosin ainoat asiakkaat ja kyllä Menitan myyjätkin osaavat kuunnella asiakkaiden puheita (ja puuttua niihin). Eipä meille mitään tyrkytetty eikä tuputettu, joten ei mitään valitettavaa toistaiseksi. Marjut osti jotain, ja niin minäkin, mutta koska en aio sitä pitää, en siitä sen enempää kehuskele.

I went to finally visit the latest addition to Helsinki's yarn shops, FiinaNeule, with Marjut. I too think that the shop location is very fine, quite in the middle of Helsinki. I can't really comment much on the service. True, we were under observation, but then again we were the only customers there and the salespeople in Menita can also listen to what customers talk (and comment on that). Nobody tried to get us to buy anything or look crossly about our yarn-fondling so no complaints so far. Marjut bought something and I did too, but since it's not for me I won't comment on that further.

Nyt on se aika jolloin pitäisi miettiä sopivaa talvilomakohdetta. Ja meille tyypilliseen tapaan harkinnassa olevat kohteet eivät suinkaan ole mitään rantasellaisia, vaan vaihtoehtoja on kaksi: Osaka ja New York. Miksikö noin erilaiset kohteet? Ihan raadollisesti siksi, että Finnairin Top Clubissa molemmat ovat talvitarjouksessa, siksi. Osaka kiehtoo jo ihan siksi että en ole Japanissa vielä ennättänyt käydä ja New York, no, se on aina New York (enkä sielläkään ole ikinä käynyt). Hmmmh...mietittävää riittää.

Now is the time of the year when it's good to think where to go on our winter vacation. And typically for us the places we're considering are not beach-places, but we've narrowed the choises down to two: Osaka and New York. Why such differend locations? Quite prosaically because the Finnair Top Club (for Finnair bonus card holders) both places are on offer for the winter, that's why. Osaka is fascinating just because I've never been to Japan (yet) and New York, well, it's always New York (and I haven't been there yet either). Hmmmh...something to think about, surely.

Ei onnistu, ei - Nope, it doesn't work

Yhteys Helloon siis. Harvoin minulla on ongelmia ko. ohjelman kanssa ollut, mutta nyt taitaa olla yksi niitä päiviä. Joten ei kuvia. Eipä silti, ei minulla mitään kauhean ihmeellistä näytettävää olisikaan ollut kun olen neulonut melkein vaan vanhoja juttuja.

Connecting to Hello that is. I rarely have problems with it but this seems to be one of those days. So no pictures. Not that I have anything that interesting to show anyhow since I've been knitting the old stuff mostly.

Mitäpä olen tehnyt viime päivinä:

1. Taikajakun toinen hiha etenee mukavasti, olen päässyt jo puolivälipisteen paremmalle puolelle. Kohta voisi saada jopa valmiin neuleen kuvia tänne.
2. Mystery shawl 2 tökkii pahasti. Tein kolmannen vihjeen loppuun ja tutkiskelin valmiiden huivien kuvia. En pidä. Taidanpa purkaa mokoman ja keksiä jotain muuta käyttöä langalle. Ehkä Ene's scarf tai pikkuinen liivi, tulisipa käyttöä paitapuseroillekin.
   
3. Eris on vielä samassa puolikauluksellisessa tilassa missä se on ollut jo viimeiset N viikkoa. Sille pitäisi tehdä jotain. Kun taikajakku on valmis palaan taas siihen, lupaan mä.
   
4. Hana-huivissa pitäisi ottaa käyttöön toinen kerä. Etenee siis hitaasti mutta varmasti.
5. Olen tehnyt huovutuskokeiluja Tallinnasta joskus ostamastani Maali-langasta. Huopuu kyllä mutta vaatii rankkaa pesukonekäsittelyä. Aloitin jopa juttua Ullan joululiitteeseen mutta se piti purkaa kun en osannut jakolaskuja (10/5 ei todellakaan ole 2.5).

What I've been up to lately:

1. The second sleeve of the magic cardi is progressing nicely and I've reached the better side of the half-way point. So you could expect pictures of a finished product soonish.
2. The Mystery Shawl 2 is not going well. I've finished the 3rd clue and looked at finished shawls at the yahoo site. Don't like them. I will probably rip it and think of something else to do with the yarn. Maybe Ene's scarf or a small slipover thing. Then I'd be able to use some of my blouses.
3. Eris is still in its sad half-finished-collar-state as it's been about N weeks. Something should be done with it. After the magic cardi is finished I'll start with it again, I promise.
4. Have to find the second ball of yarn so that I may continue with the Hana scarf. It's coming along slowly but surely.
5. Have been doing some felting experiments with some Maali-yarn I bought from Tallinn a while ago. It does felt nicely but requires some serious washing machine treatment. I even started knitting the Ulla chrismas number thing but had to rip because I couldn't handle my divisions (10/5 is really not 2.5).

Meemimomumameme

Minna heitti minua meemillä ja sehän sopii koska ei nyt ole mitään uutta esiteltävää (huovutuskokeiluista ollaan hiljaa), siis:

Mieluisin lanka millä olet neulonut?

Notuota...Rowanin Calmer on aivan ihanaa neulottavaa (tiheysongelmistani huolimatta). Ja puikoilla tällä hetkellä oleva Lana Grossan Tusshena on sekin ihastuttavaa. En tosin ole vielä kokenut mitään "pakko"-lankaa, siis sellaista mitä olisi pakko neuloa hirveästi ja koko ajan. Ehkä se on hyväkin että tulee sitten kokeiltua erilaisia lankoja. Luonnonkuitujen ystävä kyllä olen ja viimeaikoina näytän olleen kovasti mieltynyt erilaisiin silkki-ja kashmirsekoitteisiin.

Suosikkipuikkosi

Täytyy minunkin hypätä Addi-junaan. Todella mukavat, vaikka kyllä tasona pääasiassa neulonkin.

Kamalinta mitä olet neulonut?

Hmm...tarkoitetaanko tässä lankaa vai neuletta? No, kauhein lanka on joko tikapuulanka tai Katia Chic, josta neuloin tämän puseron. Inhottavaa kun puikko könähtää keskelle lankaa.

Mutta jos tarkoitetaan vaatetta, niin se taisi olla muinoin opiskeluaikojen alussa neulomani paita Novitan Cottonella-langasta. Langassa ei ollut mitään vikaa, ihan nätti korallinvärinen, mutta paidasta tuli ehkä hieman leveä ja se vielä leveni käytössä ja eräs opiskelukaverini epäilikin sitä äitysvaatteeksi. Loppui sen paidan pito siihen.

Paras ohje millä olet neulonut? (Et ehkä käytä neuletta mutta sitä oli hauska tehdä)

HHhmm...tuntuu että onnistun jokaiseen ohjeeseen tekemään jotain oudosti. Mutta Jaegerin ohjeet ovat olleet mukavan perusteellisia.

Tärkein neulontatekniikka?

Kallistun kyllä viimeistelyn puoleen minäkin. Tämän kanssa on tullut möhlittyä ihan tarpeeksi.

Paras neulekirja tai -lehti?

Rowanin lehdet ovat todella kauniita, vaikka en niistä paljon mitään ole neulonutkaan. Loop-d-loop viehättää erilaisuudellaan ja Lavoldin Viikinkineuleet-kirjassa on ihastuttavia neuleita.

Mieluisin knit-a-long?

Olen osallistunut vain Mystery Shawl 1:een ja 2:een, mutta enpä voi väittää varsinaisesti osallistuneeni koska neuloin (ja neulon) niitä ihan omaan tahtiini. Ajatusmielessä pidän niistä jossa on oma bloginsa jossa ihmiset esittelevät keskeneräisiä ja valmiita töitään muittenkin nähtäväksi.

Mieleisimmät neuleblogit?

Suomalaisia seuraan pääasiassa blogilistan kautta ja joitakin suosikkiulkomaalaisiani olen listannut sivun oikeaan laitaan.

Mielisuunnittelija?

Ei minulla varsinaista suosikkisuunnittelijaa ole, monelta löytyy kivoja malleja kuten Debbie Blissiltä, Kim Hargreavesilta, Martin Storey suunnittelee myös aika näpsäkän näköisiä juttuja, no, siinä muutama.

Mitä neuletta pidät eniten (kuva olis yllätys)?

Cloud, tähän asti ainakin. Maxwell onnistui kyllä niin hyvin että siitä voi tulla talven suosikkeja.

I got this meme from Minna and it suits me just fine since I don't have anything new I'd particularly want to show (I'm not saying anything about my felting experiments), so here goes:

What is your all time favourite yarn to knit with?

Well, I do love to knit Rowan Calmer, it's so smooth and soft (beside the gauge issues). And the one I have on the needles at the moment, Tusshena from Lana Grossa, is nice to knit also. I haven't come across any "must" yarns yet, meaning that I get so in love with a yarn that I must knit with and with it only. Which I guess is a good thing since it keeps me knitting with different yarns. Though I am a big fan of natural fibers and I seem to have developed an appetite towards cashmere and silk blend yarns lately.

Your favourite needles?

Addi circulars here also. Although I usually knit flat with them.

The worst thing you've ever knit?

I'm not sure whether this is for yarn or knit so I'll just answer both. Well, the worst yarn I've knit with is either a ladder yarn or Katia Chic, which became this sweater. I do hate it when the needle manages to get stuck in the middle of the yarn.

Your most favourite knit pattern? (maybe you don't wear it but it was fun to knit)

Hhhhhmmm...I seem to manage to do something funny with almost every pattern but in general I do like Jaeger patterns. They're very thorough and clear.

Most valuable knitting technique?

Finishing, definitely. Have done that poorly plenty of times and ended up with something not so nice.

Best knit book or magazine?

I do like Rowan magazines even though I haven't really done much from them. But they're so pretty. Loop-d-Loop is so fresh and different and Lavold's Viking knits is nice too.

Your favourite knit-a-long?

I've only participated in Mystery Shawl 1 and 2 and not very actively in them since I prefer to knit at my own speed. But in general I like those knit-a-longs that have their own blog to let people show off their unfinished and finished knits for others.

Your favourite knit blogs?

I follow Finnish knit blogs mostly via blogilista, and some of my foreign favourites I've listed on the right side of the page.

Your favourite knitwear designer?

I don't have a favourite as such since many designers design something that I like, such as Debbie Bliss, Kim Hargreaves and Martin Storey. Well, there's few anyway.

The knit item you wear the most? (How about a picture of it!)

Cloud, to this point at least. I did so well with Maxwell that it might become one of the winter's favourites.

Maanantaiaamu ja työt uhkaavat taas huomenna ja siemailen täällä drinkkiä ja yritän valmistaa itseäni kohtaamaan tulevan viikon (paljon mittauksia tiedossa). Mikäs tässä on ollessa, drinkki on hyvä, melkein kuin White Lady mutta lime-mehulla ja ilman sokerireunusta. Mulla on oma baarimikko kotona ;-)

Monday morning and work is looming on the background and I'm sitting here sipping a cocktail and trying to prepare myself for the upcoming work week (lots of measurements to be done). I feel quite pleasant at the moment, the drink is good, almost a White Lady but with lime juice and no sugar rim on the glass. I have my very own bartender at home ;-)

Eilen käytiin anoppilassa (no ei me olla naimisissa mutta tuo on helpoin termi kuitenkin) ja neulon Hana-huivia niin paljon että olen ensimmäisen kerän lopussa. Se on sellainen pikku välityö mitä on mukava kantaa mukana. Taikajakku on saanut ensimmäisen hihansa, tosin näppäränä tyttönä jätin hihan päättelemättä kun en ole ihan varma minkä pituiset hihat ovat hyvät. Tuosta on sitten hyvä jatkaa kun jakku on kursittu kokoon. Tässä kauhea kuva, mutta minkäs teet kun kappale on todella oudon muotoinen ja sisällä on aina pimeää. Päiväsellä kun paistoi hieman aurinko (noin 30 sekkaa) niin olin punttisalilla enkä suinkaan kotona ottamassa valokuvia. Outoa, tiedän, mutta mä nyt vaan olen sellainen.

Yesterday we went to the in-laws (well, we're not married but its easier to call them that) and I knitted my Hana scarf so much that I'm at the end of the first ball. It's a nice little piece to take with me when I need a portable knit. The magic cardi got its first sleeve though I didn't bind it off since I'm not sure if the sleeve is the correct length yet. I thought I'd see how it is after I've sown the thing together, whether I have to continue or not. The photo is terrible but what can you do, the piece looks odd and it's always dark inside these days. Today when it was sunny (for about 30 seconds) I was at the gym and not at home taking pictures. Weird, I know, but I'm just like that.

Sananen Lontoon-tuliaisista. Mies ei ehtinyt lankakauppaan kun vapaa-aikaa oli vähän joten en viitsinyt edes ehdottaa. Sen sijaan sain koruja täältä. Aivan ihana paikka. Minulle kelpaavat kaikki niiden korut, kiitos. Jos jollakin on joululahjaongelmia...

A word or two about the gifts from London. The man didn't go to a yarn store since he had so little free time that I didn't even suggest that. But I got some jewellery from here. I love the place. I'd happily take all their jewellery, thank you. If somebody has trouble thinking of a suitable christmas present for me...

Kissa sai kissanminttubanaanin Harrod'silta. Se on aivan ihana, kissan mielestä siis. Se korvasi ihanuudessaan vuonna yksi ja kaksi samaisesta paikasta ostetun kissanminttusikarin. Tottahan sikari on kyllä hienostuneempi kuin banaani mutta nyt ei ollut varaa valita. Pääasia että lahjan saaja on onnellinen. Toinenkin lemmikkini, iPod, sai myös tuliaisen. Nyt se on pinkki, eikö olekin ihq? Tämä ei kyllä ollut päättävä tekijä vaan se, että moiselle ei saanut iSkinejä kaupasta kuin mustana, valkoisena ja pinkkinä. Eipä siinä sitten paljon päätettävää ollut. Mutta on se silti hieno. Tuollainen pimeässä loistava malli olisi kyllä aika cool.

The cat got a catnip banana from Harrod's. It is really wonderful, that's what the cat thinks that is. In its wonderfulness it replaced the catnip cigar I got for her from the same place in the year one and two. Although a cigar surely is more distinguished than a banana, the main thing is that the end user is happy. My other pet, the iPod, got something also. Now it is pink, isn't it adorable? This wasn't the deciding factor though, it was the selection. They only had the iSkins in white, black and pink. A bit of a no-brainer really. Although one of those glo-models would have been cool.

Hohhoijaa

Eipä onnistunut shoppailut, ei. Mikä siinä on että silloin kun haluaisi ostaa jotain niin ei löydä mitään? Joka kauppa pursusi neuletakkeja jotka suljetaan edestä soljella. Minä olisin halunnut niitä solkia...sellaisia isoja hakaneuloja joista joko roikkui jotain tai ne olivat muuten vaan koristeellisia. Mutta mikään kauppa ei sitten myynyt pelkkiä koruja, edes Stockmannilta en löytänyt sellaisia. Pöh! Minä kun tarvitsisin yhden kohta. Ostospäivän saalis oli sitten "naiselliset" vuorettomat Gore-Tex kengät.

Didn't have much luck with my shopping. Why is it that when you want to buy something you never find anything interesting? The stores were filled with cardis, the kinds that you close at the front with a brooch. I wanted them brooches...you know, the oversized safety-pin kinds, with things hanging from them or just very decorative. But none of the shops had just those brooches for sale, not even the biggest department store in Helsinki. How disappointing. And I will need one soon. Now I'm pondering my next yarn purchase. I'd like to buy some Silana, but the colour! Cyclam is really pretty but don't I already have plenty of reddish yarns? Maybe kiwi then...or maybe I should sleep on it.

Täällä on neulottu, o-on. Ja tässä on todiste: taikajakun vartalo-osa on valmis ja aloitin tänään toista hihaa. Hyvänä puolena tässä voi pitää sitä, että jos jakusta tulee syystä tai toisesta omituinen, niin voin aina purkaa hihat, laittaa tekeleen puoliksi ja tehdä siitä vetävän hameen.

Yes, I've been knitting here, reallyI have. And here's the proof: the body part of the magic cardi is finished and I even started on a sleeve today. A good side to this is that if for some reason or another the cardi would turn out to be weird I can always rip the sleeves, cut the body-part in half and make it into a funky skirt.

Ugh, olen taistellut massiivista tiskivuorta vastaan. Meillä oli eilen vieraita kylässä...siis, pidän vieraista, ne ovat mukavia, mutta tiskit jälkeenpäin...ugh! Ja ei, meillä ei ole tiskikonetta selvästikään. Ja joku nimeltämainitsematon lähti Lontooseen ja jätti kaikki tiskit minulle...odotan hyviä tuliaisia!

Mutta nyt on dilemma: mitä tehdä huomenna? Tekisi mieli mennä kaupungille tuhlaamaan rahaa, mutta toisaalta voisin mennä punttisalille hikoilemaan ja sen jälkeen harrastaa siivoamista ja tiskaamista. Jaa-ah, vaikea valinta, etten sanoisi.

Ugh, I've been dealing with a massive mountain of dishes today. We had some friends over yesterday...don't get me wrong, I like guests but the dishes afterwards...ugh! And no, we obviously don't have a dishwasher. And someone whose name won't be mentioned went to London and left all the dishes to me...I expect nice gifts!

Now I have a dilemma: what to do tomorrow? I'd like to go to the city to spend some money but on the other hand I could go and sweat at the gym and after that I could vacuum the flat and do some more dishes. Well, a tough choice, I'd say.

Marraskuu - November

Marraskuu on tylsä kuukausi: on kylmää, pimeää, ankeaa ja yleensä sataa vielä räntää tai vettä. Nyt ei sentään ole sadellut mitään eikä ole kylmäkään mutta ankeaa ja pimeää on sitäkin enemmän. Tänään sain oikein raahata itseni punttisalille. Mikähän siinäkin on että sinne meno on välillä niin vastenmielistä vaikka tietää että jälkeenpäin on oikein mukava olo? Tein ensimmäistä kertaa kokonaan uuden sarjan joten olo nyt ei ihan niin mukava ole, vähän raihnainen oikeastaan. Taikajakku on edennyt mukavasti, vartalo-osa on jo lähes valmis. Ja nyt en jaksa harrastaa mitään tekopirteitä neuleposeerauskuvia vaan näytän karun todellisuuden: neule neulojan hylkäämänä.

November is a boring month: it's cold, dark, dreary and it's usually raining sleet or water. It hasn't rained anything anything yet and it's not even that cold but it's plenty dark and dreary. Today I had to drag myself to the gym. I wonder why going there is sometimes so unpleasant even though I know that I feel quite good afterwards? Though today was the first time I did my new program so I don't feel that good at the moment, a bit achy actually. The magic cardi has progressed nicely, the body part is almost finished. And now I can't be bothered with doing some fake-cheerful knit-posing shots instead I'm showing the harsh reality: a knit abandoned by knitter.

Sain lauantaina kukkia kun 26.10 oli Niinan (ja parin muun) päivä. Kissa kävi vähän väliä haistelemassa niitä silloin ja katsokaas mitä nyt löysin keskeltä kimppua. Juu-uh, kiinnostavia ovat.

I got some flowers on Saturday since 26th October was Niina's (and a couple of other names too) day. The cat was sniffing at them quite frequently then and look what I found smack in the middle of my boquet. Yeah, they're interesting all right.

Heja Sverige!

Katson toipuneeni aikaerorasituksesta sen verran että voin palata blogaamisen maailmaan. Eipä silti että kukaan olisi laskemassa (minä), mutta tämä taisi olla seitsemäs ulkomaanmatkani tänä vuonna. En silti mitenkään pärjää eräille, mutta onhan se jo jotain. Tukholmasta tarttui mukaan kaikenlaista, kamaa Lushilta (Ocean Salt on aivan ehdotonta), kirjoja Science Fiction Bokhandelnista (uusin Tad Williams, Max Barry ja Jonathan Carroll), kallonmuotoinen pesusieni (koska se on ihan ihq) ja heijastimia (illat ovat pimeitä).

I feel that I've recovered somewhat from the jet-lag and can return to the land of blogging. Not that anyone's counting (me) but I believe this was my seventh trip to foreign regions this year. That's nothing compared to what some people have been up to but not bad, I'd say. The stuff that came home with me from Stockholm include stuff from Lush (the Ocean Salt is a must), books from Science Fiction bokhandeln (the latest Tad Williams, a Max Barry and a Jonathan Carroll), scull-shaped sponge (because it was so sweet) and reflectors (the evenings are very dark).

Lankakaupoissakin kävin. Käväisylistalle pääsivät Svensk Hemslöjd, This Side Up (Österlånggatan jotain) ja Anntorp's Väv (Österlånggatan 11). Mutta ka, lanka ei miellyttänyt - vaikka Debbie Blissin Alpaca Silk oli aivan ihanaa - ja mukaan pääsi vain yksi vyyhti. Kotona odottava Maya haikaili kavereita ja sille päätin sitten kamun ostaa. Mutta kaikessa viisaudessani (ja matkatavaran minimoimiseksi) otin mukaan vain langan vyötteen ja kaupassa oli useampi vyötteetön lankakerä, niin tässä tulos. Eihän nämä nyt oikein samaa sukua taida olla (tummempi on uusin ostos), mutta kai näistä jotain keksii. Näitä hiplatessani tuntui kotona kököttänyt kovin laihalta ja kalpealta ja pistinkin sen puntariin. Tulos: 75g. Uusi kerä: 112g. Hmmh? Eikös Mayaa pitäisi myydä 100g:n erissä?

And yes, I did manage to visit some yarn stores too. I went to Svensk Hemslöjd, This Side Up (Österlånggatans something) and Anntorp's Väv (Österlånggatan 11). But lo, I did not feel like buying yarn - even though the Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk was lovely - and I came home with only one skein. The poor Maya I had at home had been feeling lonely and wanted some company and I decided to buy it. But in all my wisdom (and packing light) I only took the yarn label with me and there were more than one yarn without a label in the store and this is what I ended up with. I believe these are not closely related (the lighter one is the old one) but I hope I can think of something to do with them. As I compared the two the old one looked so pale and thin that I decided to weight them. The old one: 75g. The new one: 112g. Hmmh? Isn't the standard packaging size for Maya 100g?

Niinan pikku apulainen - Niina's little helper

Kun kissa ei toistuvista vihjauksista huolimatta ole suostunut pesemään pyykkiä ja siivoamaan päivisin päätin hankkia itselleni hieman apua. Tässä reipas apulaiseni Noro Kabuto auttaa pesemään pyykkiä.

Since the cat, despite the numerous hints, hasn't been willing to do the laundry and cleaning up during the day I decided to get some help. Here's my new helper Noro Kabuto doing the laundry.

Ja tänään satoi lunta koko päivän. Aamulla en ollut mitenkään iloinen asiasta kun huomasin sen vasta siinä vaiheessa kun tarvoin bussipysäkille. Vaikka kenkäni gore-texillä varustetut ovatkin niin eivät ne mitkään kumisaappaat sentään ole. Sukat kastuivat, jalat niljuivat epämukavasti ja housunlahkeisiinkin kertyi vettä varmaan litran verran. Today it snowed the whole day. I wasn't feeling particularly cheerful about it this morning since I noticed it only when I already left the house. Even though my shoes are lined with gore-tex they are not rubber boots. The water seeped in, my ankles suffered and my pant legs gathered about a liter of water. Lovely. Tylsää joustinta - Boring rib

Olen ollut täällä aika tiiviisti illat kotona kun kissa tarvii hoivaa ja huolenpitoa (ja lääkkeitä) ja eipä sitä sitten paljon muuta ole tullut tehtyä kuin istuttua sohvalla, harjattua kissa ja neulottua. Taikajakku on edennyt jo noin vartalo-osan puoliväliin. Tusshenaa on mukava neuloa eikä siitä lähde karvoja vaikka siinä onkin mohairia. Ohje on juuri sopivan aivoton, pitää vain muistaa kaventaa välillä. Kuvasta näkeekin hyvin kavennuskohdat (klikaten suuremmaksi). Oletteko muuten huomanneet että Novitan sivuille on tullut ko. jakku ilmaisohjeeksi? Pakko rutista sen verran että jos ohje on paksusta langasta niin minkä ihmeen takia se kuva on sitten eri langasta tehty (Nallesta)? Eihän siitä saa tuon näköistä vaikka kuinka yrittäisi. Pakko sen on olla virhe, ei kai kukaan noin tyhmä voi olla?

I've been spending most of my evenings at home this week because the cat requires care and attention (and medicine) and there hasn't been much to do except brush the cat, sit on the sofa and knit. The magic cardi has progressed nicely and I've done almost half of the body-piece. Tusshena knits up nicely and does not shed at all even there's mohair in it. The pattern is very suited to brainless knitting, all you have to remember is to decrease at correct intervals, which you can see in the picture (at least if you klick it larger). There is a free pattern for the cardi at the Novita web-page (in Finnish only, sorry). Though I have to complain a bit about the fact that the pattern is for a much larger yarn that what is show in the picture. In the magazine there's patterns for both the thinner and thicker yarn but for the life of me I can't imagine why they put the wrong picture there. You can't get it to look like that when the yarn you're supposed to use is much thicker! Must have been a mistake, I can't believe it was intentional stupidity.

Nyt olisi tarjolla ilmainen kerä Tusshenaa. 50 grammaa, värinä Kirschrot, eli kirsikanpunainen (2257). Postikulujen hinnalla! Ah, nyt varmaan epäluuloisimpien epäilyt jo heräävät...kuka sitä nyt ilmaiseksi... Ja kyllä, en minäkään nyt niin ihana ihminen ole että totta kai tässä on jotain vikaa! Niin siinä onkin, nimittäin solmuja. Ainakin kymmenen, jos ei enemmänkin. En kyllä laskenut niitä mutta siltä tuntui. Totesin seikan keriessäni vyyhtiä ja päätin että minähän en tästä mitään tee, en halua avata tsiljoonaa solmua ja päätellä niitä sitten. Mutta päätin luovuttaa sen pois jos joku vaikka on aikeissa tilata lankaa ja haluaisi kokeilla sitä ensin. Kyllähän siitä saa vaikka ranteenlämmittimet jos ei ole niin solmukammoinen kuin minä. Siis: Tusshenaa, 55% silkkiä, 45% mohairia, kirsikanpunaisena ja lukuisine solmuineen tarjolla sille joka ensin huutaa hep!

I'm giving away a ball of Tusshena for free (or just postage), 50 grams, colour Kirschrot that is cherry red (2257). And I bet this announcement roused some suspicions...giving away...must be something wrong with it. And yes, there is something wrong with it, namely knots and lots of them. At least ten or maybe more. I did not count them but that's what it felt like. I noticed this while winding up the ball and decided that I don't want to knit this because it would mean doing something with all those knots. But I decided to give it away in case someone was thinking of ordering this yarn and wanted to try it first. And you can make something from it, like pulse warmers, if you're not such a knotphobic as I am. So: Tusshena, 55% silk, 45% mohair, cherry red and with lots of knots to the one who shouts first.

Hieman surullista - Slightly sad

Blogikissan "vuosihuolto" oli maanantaina, normaalit rokotukset, terveystarkastus ja hammaskiven poisto. Sattui sekaannus ja varattu aika olikin normaalin eläinlääkärin sijasta muualle (kaksi melkein samannimistä eläinlääkäriasemaa, vähemmästäkin menee sekaisin). Sähläämisen seurauksena päätimme jättää hammaskiven poiston tällä kertaa pois ja uuden paikan eläinlääkäri ehdotti verikokeen ottamista kun kissa on jo iäkäs (13v) ja hammaskiven poisto vaatii ainakin rauhoituksen ja jossain vaiheessa olimme huomaavinamme että kisu juo runsaasti. Verikokeen tulos oli ei-mukava...munuaisissa jotain häikkää ja vielä epäily diabeteksesta ja joku infektio. Tiistain kissa viettikin sitten lääkärillä saaden nestettä suoneen ja otettiin lisää kokeita. Diabetesta ei sentään onneksi ollut ja veriarvotkin olivat muuten aika hyvät paitsi että taitaa olla nyt sitten munuaisten vajaatoimintaa ja virtsatietulehdus. Nyt sitten annetaan antibioottia kahdesti päivässä ja silmätippoja lievään silmätulehdukseen (huomattiin kyllä) ja annetaan erikoisruokaa. Tiedän kyllä että munuaisten vajaatoimintaa poteva kissa voi elää ihan tyytyväisenä vuosia ja koska arvot eivät niin kauhean koholla olleet niin toivonkin että se on vielä lievää. Mutta ei se ikinä ole kiva tietää että rakas lemmikki on vanhenemassa.

The blog cat had her yearly check-up on Monday, the usual, shots and teeth cleaning also this time. Due to a mix-up the time was booked to another place instead of our usual one (two pet clinics with almost identical names in the same town) and because of the time spent wondering around we decided to postpone the teeth cleaning part. The vet at the new place suggested a blood test because the cat is getting on in years (13), the teeth cleaning requires some sedatives at least and we thought that at some point the cat drank a bit more that usual. The results of the blood test weren't so good: something wrong with the kidneys, suspected diabetes and some infection. Thus the cat spent the whole day Tuesday at the vet getting IV-fluids and getting some more tests done. Luckily there was no diabetes but she has chronic kidney failure and urinary infection. Now I'm giving her antibiotics twice a day for the infection, eye drops numerous times a day for a mild eye infection (we noticed that) and we have changed her diet to food suitable for CRF cat. Yes, I do know that a cat with CRF can live happily for years and because the values weren't so high I hope it's not so bad yet. But it never is easy to hear that your dear pet is getting old and has a chronic condition.

Mutta jotta homma ei menisi ihan surkutteluksi, kerrottakoon tässä vielä että Kisuli onnistui herättämään kunnioitusta ja terävien kynsien pelkoa lääkärissä tiistaina ja minun piti poistaa se häkistä kun henkilökunta ei uskaltanut. Ihan normaalikäytöksinen kissa siis.

But to keep things from getting too sad I would like to mention that Kisuli managed to inspire respect and fear of shapr claws at the vet's on Tuesday and I had to remove it from the cage because the staff were afraid. Quite normal behaviour for the cat then.

Viimeaikaista stressiä tasapainottamaan kaipasin joitain helppoa ja stressitöntä neulontaa ja keskeneräisistä ei sellaista löydy joten minun oli pakko eilen aloittaa uusi neule. Kaivoin uuden Novitan ja Tusshenat esille ja rupesin väkertämään taikajakkua (sori, ei linkkiä, Novitan omistajat tietävät mistä kyse). Ei-Novitan omistajille yritän selittää sanallisesti: kyseessä on jakku jonka vartalo-osa neulotaan yhtenä kappaleena ja hihat tehdään reunoihin, lopputulos on ah, niin muodikas lyhyt neule jonka etukappaleet ovat sivuttain käännetyn v:n muotoiset ja ne voi laittaa vaikka päällekkäin ja hörhelöllä/rintarossilla/jollakin kiinni. Eilen sain tuhottua jo yhden Tusshena-kerän ja näin paljon sillä saa aikaan kun luo 325 silmukkaa. Kuvausalustana olohuoneen matto ja uusin kirjahankintani.

Because of all the stress lately I needed something stressless to knit and because I don't have anything simple going on I had to start a new project. So I whipped out the latest Novita-magazine and my Tusshenas and started knitting. The pattern is an easy cardi where the body is knitted in one piece and the sleeves are picked up from the edges. The end result should remind those oh, so fashionable short cardis where the front pieces are shaped like sideways v:s and can be attached in the middle with a corsage/thingy/brooch. Yesterday I managed to go through a skein of Tusshena and here's how much you can get out of one when knitting with 325 stitches. The knit is residing on the living room carpet and my latest book acquisition.

Ja taas on sunnuntai - Yet another Sunday

Tänäviikonloppuna harrastin aika vähän neulomista mikä oli vaihteeksi ihan kivakin. Sormet tuppaavat kipeytymään töissä hiirihommissa, joten en uskalla liikaa rasittaa niitä neulomisella. Kohtuus kaikessa. Ja töihin pitäisi saada joku ergohiiri. Pitääkin maanantaina yrittää kysellä koekappaleita. Mutta Hana-huivi eteni muutaman mallikerran verran. Yllättävän haasteellinen malli...kun pitää tehdä jotain sekä oikealla että nurjalla puolella. Ei sovi minulle yhtään jos olen hiukankaan väsynyt kun silloin ilmeisesti kadotan kaiken kykyni laskea mitään nurjalla puolella ja saan purkaa koko ajan.

This weekend I did very little knitting which is good for a change. My fingers have started to ache a bit when I'm using the mouse a lot at work so I decided to take it easy with knitting. Take it slowly for a bit. And I do need to get some kind of ergo-mouse at work. I have to try to ask if there's some models I could try for a bit. But the Hana scarf has progressed for a couple of pattern repeats. The pattern is surprisingly difficult for me...because it requires doing something on both sides of the knitting. It does not suit me at all if I'm even a little bit tired because then I seem to loose all ability of counting anything on the purl side and I have to tink repeatedly.

Muuten viikonloppu meni rauhallisesti Kotkassa. Käytiin lahjomassa kummipoika ja syömässä äidin ruokia. Ja minä huomasin taas että hiukseni ovat vaaleanpunaiset. Siis tämä taitaa olla ennätys jopa minunkin värejä vieroksuvassa päässäni. Maanantaina laitettiin kuparinvärisiä raitoja ja jo perjantaina latvat olivat selvästi vaaleanpunertavat. Ja siitähän se vaan paranee, se vaaleanpunainen sävy siis. Uskomatonta!

Otherwise the weekend was spent in peace and quiet of Kotka. We gave birthday presents to the godson and ate my mom's cooking. And I noticed that my hair is pink again. This must be a record even for my colour-shedding hair. I got copper highlights done last Monday and on Friday the edges were noticeably pinkish. And they're even more pink now. Unbelievable!

Shoppailua - Shopping

Marjut ehtikin jo esitellä kaupat jossa kävimme, joten minun ei ehkä tarvitse sitä niin laajasti tehdä. Esittelen sitten vaan kierroksen tulokset. Ilosta ei löytynyt mitään, juurikin siitä syystä että lankavarastot siellä olivat aika alhaiset. Patagonian puuvillalanka (luulisin että se oli tätä lankaa) oli kyllä aika kivan tuntuista, mutta ei nyt sykäyttänyt tähän vuodenaikaan kun rupean halajamaan lämpimämpiä materiaaleja. Colinetten valikoima oli suppea, messuista johtuen, tosin yksi mehevä vihreä olisi voinut lähteä mukaan. En nyt tarkemmin muista langan laatua, vain sen mehevän vihreän värin. Vyyhdin hinnalla olisi tullut kallis paita (12€/vyyhti) ja huivilankoja en nyt oikein halua, joten kauppaan jäi se.

Marjut managed to write about the shops we visited in Helsinki last weekend, so I'll just concentrate more on what I got. The first store, Ilo (Iso Roobertinkatu 38) sold clothes and such also, the yarns they had were Patagonian Nature Cotton (I think it was this yarn but I'm not sure) felt pretty nice but it was too cottony for this time of the year when my heart longs for something warmer. The Colinette selection there was quite spare because of a crafts fair about a month ago, but there was one really nice green one that wanted to come home with me a bit. I don't remember actually what yarn it was, I only remember that nice deep green. Though with the price of a skein being what it was (12€) that would have been an expensive sweater and I do not need any scarf yarns so it stayed in the store.

Sitten jatkoimme seuraavaan kahteen lankakauppaan, Rosa Matildaan ja käsityötalo Priimaan. Ensin mainittu on oikeastaan neulestudio, jossa on myös lankoja kaupan. Omistaja oli todella mukava! Lanka oli merkkiä Schoppel-Wolle (hauska kissa etiketissä pisti silmään heti) ja sitä tarttui mukaan kaksi kerää. Ensimmäinen on sukkalankaa, Admiral D Ruck-nimistä, joka ei tavoistani poiketen ole itseraidoittuvaa, mutta siinä on aivan mahtavat syksyiset värit. Pakko-ostos siis. Värit ovat niin mehevät ja niin "minua" että hetken suunnittelin tekeväni siitä jopa paidan mutta mokoman ohuus sai minut järkiini ja kassiin päätyi vain yksi kerä sukkia varten. Toinen kerä on OnTouch merinovillalankaa. Sitä oli nyt vain ällöä vauvapinkkiä, mutta koska tarkoitus on neuloa joku vauvanjuttu (myssy varmaan) otin sen mukaan kokeeksi. Pinkki väri ei tarttunut muistikortille kauhean hyvin kaiken punaisuuden ympäröimänä joten otin siitä kuvan ihan itsekseen. Tuossa väri on aika oikeanlainen. Priimassa oli tämän kierroksen ehdottomasti suurin lankavalikoima. Sieltä ostin kuitenkin vain alekorissa lojuneen euron villalankakerän tulevaa huovutusprojektia varten. Mutta kivaa että Helsingin lankavalikoimat kasvavat.

Then we continued on to Rosa Matilda and Priima (Hämeentie 26). The first one is actually a knitting studio/boutique that also sells some yarn. The yarn there is mainly from Schoppel-Wolle (the funny cat in the belt caught my eye) and I got two balls from there. The first one is a sock yarn called Admiral D Ruck. And despite what you might think from my past sock yarn purchases, this is not a self-striping one, but the colours were so autumny that I had to get it. Actually the colours were so "me" that for a moment I entertained a thought that I'd knit a sweater out of it. But the thinness of the yarn brought me to my senses quite fast and I got only one ball for socks. The other ball is 100% merino wool called On Touch. The only colour they had at the moment was very pale baby pink (so not my colour) but since I should knit a baby thing for a friend I took it home anyway. At least I get a chance to test the yarn. The camera didn't catch the pinkness of the yarn very well when it was surrounded with all that redness so I had to take a photo of just the yarn by itself. There the pink is quite accurate. Priima had the largest selection of yarns found in this shopping spree but I only got one skein from the discount basket. It cost me one euro and it is some pure wool yarn that I'm planning on using for a felting project in near future. But it's nice that we have some new yarns in Helsinki for a change.

Lopuksi kuva Hana-huivista osoittaakseni että olen ihan tehnytkin jotain. Tässäkin olen kahden kuvan loukussa, kun silkkilangan värejä on vaikea saada esille. Toinen kuva näyttää värit, toinen kuvion. Eikös olekin kivaa?

I'll end this post with a picture of my Hana silk scarf to show you that I've been doing some knitting also. Here I am again forced to present you with two pictures because the silk yarn is difficult to photograph. The other one shows the colours quite nicely and the other the pattern. Isn't that nice?

Hiiri talossa, osa II - A mouse in the house, part II

Kissa sai taas hiiren tänään, parvekkeelta. Kuului kauheata temmellystä, rapinaa ja vinkumista hieman kissan sinne menon jälkeen ja ennenkuin kumpikaan meistä ehti reagoida sen kummemmin asiaan, arvon neiti tuli ovesta sisälle hiiri hampaissaa. Oli kyllä niin pollean näköinen ja oli hieman sääli pilata toisen iloa ja riistää hiiri pois. Mutta ei sitä sisällä kyllä ruveta syömään! Edellisestä poiketen tämä hiiri saatiin elossa ulos. Mutta kiva tietää että höpsöllä sisäkissallammekin vaistot kyllä pelaavat. Mokomat jyrsijät olivat nähtävästi käyttäneet parvekkeella sijainnutta peitettä, tai oikeammin sen alustaa, ruokailupaikkanaan. Ihme epeleitä, olisi luullut kissan hajun pitävän moiset kuokkavieraat meiltä kaukana.

The cat caught yet another mouse today, from the balcony. There was a terrible rucus, scratching and squeaking, a bit after the cat went out and before either of us really had time to react the cat came in with a mouse in its mouth. It was looking so pleased with itself that it was a bit shame to ruin the fun and take the mouse away. But I won't have any dining on mice inside the house! And this one got out alive, unlike the previous one. It is nice to know that our soft indoor cat still has her instincts intact. The rodents in question had apparently used a cover we have in our balcony as their privat eating place since we found plenty of eaten rosehips under it. Weird things, I would have thought that the smell of cat would have been enough to keep the uninvited guests away.

Kävimmepä Marjutin kanssa pienellä lankakauppakierroksella Helsingissä eilen, mutta siitä lisää huomenna kuvien kera. Mutta sitä odotellessa esittelen vanhan työni jonka olen tehnyt joitakin vuosia sitten: helmikirjontaa. Ruusu on ommeltu helmistä ja upotettu tyynynpäälliseen. Tyynyn on koonnut äitini, koska minä ja ompelukone emme tule oikein hyvin toimeen keskenämme. Mutta kas, osaanpa tehdä jotakin muutakin kuin vain neuloa.

Marjut and I went to get ourselves acquainted with some new yarn shops here in Helsinki on Saturday but I'll write about that later (with pictures). In the mean time I'll present you with a thing I did some years ago: sewing with beads. The rose in the center is made of beads and it has been made into a pillowcase. I did the beading and my mom put together the pillowcase since the sewing machine and I don't get along all the time. But you see, I can do other stuff than just knit.
