Muistojen tiellä - A trip down the memory lane

Ensin hieman vastauksia edellisen postaukseni kommentteihin: kiitoksia kehuista, ne ovat aina mukavia :-) Ja toiseksi, en tiedä näkyykö ohjetta ikinä Ullassa...en nimittäin tiedä osaanko kirjoittaa sen paperille, se vaan jotenkin kasvoi. Ja kaula-aukon ympärillä on nyt jokunen kerros 1o, 1n-ribbiä. Takaosa nimittäin tahtoi kietyä ikävästi koko ajan joten ei ollut muuta keinoa.

Mutta se siitä. Miksikö otsikko on muistojen tiellä? No, vietin pari päivää Kotkassa vanhempieni luona ja onnistuin käymään siinä sivussa jo aikaisemmin mainitsemassani Kotkalaisessa lankakaupassa, Ompelukoneliike Nousiainen Ky:ssä. Ja niinkuin nimikin jo sanoo, ei kyseessä ole pelkkä lankakauppa vaan pääartikkeli on kyllä ompelukoneet ja kaikki ompeluun liittyvä tilpehööri. Toki liikkeestä löytyy myös matonkuteita, huovutusvillaa ja niin, lankaa. Siitä lankavalikoimasta voisikin puhua pidemmän aikaa, mutta yksinkertaisesti sanottuna se on erikoinen. Mukana on Novitan Raita-lanka ja Regian sukkalanka uudesta päästä ja en edes osaa arvata kuinka vanhoja vanhimmat langat ovat. Myönnän kyllä että suurimmasta osasta lankoja en ollut aikaisemmin edes kuullutkaan. Tiesitteko, että Novitalla on joskus ollut lankaa nimeltä Came, jossa on ollut 90% Shetlannin villaa ja 10% kamelinkarvaa? Mutta oli siellä tutumpiakin, kuten Novita Cottonellaa. Ja mitkä hinnat! Suurin osa noista vanhoista langoista oli 1.5 euroa/50g kerä. Eihän tuolla hinnalla taida saada lankaa edes Novitan tehtaanmyymälästä. Ja kaikesta suitsutuksesta huolimatta onnistuin ostamaan lankaa vain lahjaksi...eli Neulova Ystäväni, sittenhän näet!

So why is the title A trip down the memory lane? Well, I spent a couple of days in Kotka with my parents. And while there I managed to go to a yarn shop in Kotka. And it is not just a yarn shop, their main article is sewing machines and anything connected with sewing (not so much fabrics though). There is also the thing you make rugs out of (my English is sorely lacking here, but you know, the cottony rope-like thingy that you make rugs out of with looms), felting wool and yes, yarn. And here comes the meaning of the title since the selection is, well, to put it gently, odd. But in a good way. There is new yarns like Novita Raita (a sock yarn with even stripes) and Regia sock and the old ones, I can't even guess how old the oldest are. Most of them I haven't even heard of. I didn't even know that finnish yarn maker Novita made a yarn called Came that was 90% Shetland wool and 10% camel hair. And the prices! Most of the old yarns were 1.5 euros/50g ball. I don't think you can get yarn at that price even at the Novita factory shop. And after all this raving I managed to buy yarn only as a gift.

Yritin myös neuloa Kotkassa. Otin mukaan Rowan Calmeria (väri night sky) ja puikot ja kirjasen nimeltä Calmer Collection. Iskin silmäni malliin nimeltä Cloud. Ajanpuuttesta johtuen ehdin ottaa mukaan vain kirjasen sanoman puikkokoon, eli 5mm. Tähän vaikutti osaltaan se, että olin niin tyytyväinen Maxwellin mallista ja tiheyteni sopi ohjeen tiheyteen täydellisesti, että ajattelin kaikkien Rowanin ohjeiden olevan yhtä hyviä. Mutta...vaikka Calmer Collection kirjanen onkin ihana ja Kim Hargreavesin mallit näyttävät kaikki kivoilta, on minulla silti hieman hampaankolossa ko. opuksesta. Siis...tutustuttuani tarkemmin Calmerin vyötteeseen suositellaan siinä puikkokokoa 4.5mm jotta saataisiin sopiva tiheys 10mmx10mm (21krs ja 30s) niin kirjasessa suositellaan saman tuloksen aikaansaamiseksi 5mm:n puikkoja. Siis onko tässä ristiriita vaiko eikö? Mutta minulla on kuitenkin ongelma tiheyteni kanssa. 5mm:n puikoilla saan aikaan 19s ja 28krs. Sitten siirryin 4.5mm:n puikkoihin (ostettuani ne ensin, huom! olin siis vielä Kotkassa tässä pisteessä) sain aikaan 20s ja 30krs. Noh, eikun pienempiin puikkoihin (nyt olin jo takaisin Espoossa). 4mm:n puikoilla pääsin tulokseen 21s ja 32 krs. Tässä vaiheessa teki mieli istua nurkkaan ja tunkea sormet korviin ja hyräillä hiljaa itsekseni. Siis höh! Kaikki kunnia Calmerille, sitä on todella miellyttävä neuloa, mutta en voi silti yhtyä kansainvälisten neulojien ylistyskuoroon ja laulaa Calmerin ylistystä. Minä en ainakaan pääse ohjeessa annettuun tiheyteen sitten millään ilveellä. Mikä siis eteen? Jospa vaikka pesisin näytteeni ja katsoisin mitä sitten tapahtuu, eli kutistuuko lanka vai ei. Muuten taidan suosiolla ottaa nuo 4.5mm:n puikot kun ohjeet on kirjoitettu rivimittaan, ja tehdä hieman pienemmän koon. Ei oo helppoa, ei. Ja miksi kaikista muista malleista näkee paljon paremmin miltä ne näyttävät paitsi Cloudista? Malli istuu niin lysyssä että neuletakki voisi olla ihan hyvin minimittainen eikä kuvasta näkisi mitään...

I also tried to knit while in Kotka. I took along Rowan Calmer (colour night sky), needles and a booklet called the Calmer Collection. I've got my eye on Cloud. Due to time constrictions I only managed to grab along the needles the booklet suggested, namely 5mm. In part I was influenced by my satisfaction with the pattern of Maxwell, my gauge was spot on, and I though that other Rowan patterns would be good also. But...even though the Calmer Collection booklet is very nice and I do like the look of the patterns that Kim Hargreaves makes, I was a bit less than pleased with the booklet all in all. I mean, once I got better acquainted with the yarn and the booklet I noticed that while the yarn wrapping suggests 4.5mm needles to get the correct gauge for 10mmx10mm (21sts, 30 rows) the booklet suggests 5mm needles to get to the same conclusion. So is there a discrepancy or not? I, however, do have a problem with my gauge. With the recommended 5mm needles I manage to get 19s and 28rows to 10mm. Then I switched to 4.5mm needles after I had bought them (note, at this time I was still in Kotka) and I got 20s and 30rows. Then I tried 4mm (didn't have to buy them since I was back in Espoo) and got 21s and 32 rows. At this point I got an overwhelming urge to go sit in the corner and stick my fingers in my ears and hum quietly to myself. Blah, I say! No offense to Calmer, it is really pleasant to knit, but I still can't join the international knitters choir and sing my praises to Calmer. I can't make the required gauge to save my life. So what is a knitter to do? I thought I'd try to wetting my samples and seeing what happens. Otherwise I think I'll take the 4.5mm needles and make a smaller size. It's not easy, nope. And why is there better pictures of all the patterns besides Cloud? The model sits so hunched that the cardi could be way short and I wouldn't notice anything...

Melkein valmis - Almost finished

Olen koko viikon kärsinyt yleisestä PLÄÄH-olosta ja olenkin vain löhönnyt sängyssä iltaisin ja lukenut kirjoja. Jossain suuren plään ja vähän pienemmän plään välissä sain neulottua pikkupuseron tähän kuntoon. Ja kah, sehän sopii kuin käsine! Tosin en oikein omista kauhean hyvin sopivia käsineitä joten ehkä se ei ollut kaikkein paras vertaus. Mutta kuitenkin, sopivan kokoinen siis. Kaula-aukko on vielä viimeistelemättä ja langanpätkät vaativat päättelyä. Aloitin eilen neulomaan 1x1-ribbiä kauluksen reunaan mutta poimin liian vähän silmukoita joten se kinnasi ja purin sen pois. En tosin tiedä...minusta kauluksen koko on nyt hyvä, mutta ihan tämmöiseksikään en sitä voi jättää koska reunat menevät hiukan rullalle takana. Ehkä voisin vaan virkata siihen kerroksen reunaan?

I've been suffering with a case of general blaah-ness all week and have done almost nothing in the evenings except lying in bed and reading. But between a big blaah and a small blaah I've managed to get my small top into above condition. And what do you know, it fits like a glove! Although I do not own gloves with such a great fit so maybe this was not a good comparison. Anyway, it fits. The neck is unfinished and I need to weave in the yarn ends. Yesterday I started doing 1x1 rib on the neck edges, but I picked up too few stitches so it bunched unflatteringly and I ripped it. But I kind of like the size and shape of the neck now but I can't leave it at that since the edge curls a bit on the back. Maybe I should just crochet a round on the edge?

Hmph!

Hello kieltäytyy yhteistyöstä. Ei siis kuvia tänään. Noh, ei mulla mitään kovin ihmeellistä olisikaan ollut, kuva pikkupuseron etenemisestä ja lähikuva pinnasta (kun kerran lupasin ottaa parempia kuvia). Hitaasti tulee puseroa. Ohutta lankaa ja koko homma pyöröllä, hidastahan se. Mutta olen jo päässyt siihen vaiheeseen että pystyin sovittamaan puseroa ilman että puikoilta karkasi kovin montaa silmukkaa. Vähän pahoin pelkään että puserosta tulee lyhyt vaikka mallin mukaan sitä olenkin tehnyt. Mutta se nyt ei ole onneksi ylitsepääsemätön ongelma (toivottavasti). Mietin sitä sitten jahka siihen vaiheeseen joskus pääsen.

Hello is refusing to co-operate so no pictures today. Well, I did not have anything so special to show, just a progress picture of the top and a closeup of the surface (since I promised better pictures last time). The top is progressing but slowly. Thin yarn and the whole thing on circulars, it's slow let me tell you. But I've reached the stage where I could try it on without dropping too many stitches off the needles. I fear that it'll be on the short side even though I've had a model to work with. But that's not too big of an obstacle (I hope).

Sainpa minäkin uuden Novita-lehden, perjantaina. Ja, noh, mitä siitä nyt sanoisi...olihan siinä jokunen ihan toteuttamiskelpoinen malli. Kovasti oli empirelinjaa ja toppeja ja narubikinejä, mutta mitäpä sitä kesänumerolta muuta odottaisikaan. Hassuja olivat mielestäni ne bikiniviritelmät...en voi kun ihmetellä että mitenköhän ihania ne ovat märkinä. Vai onkohan tarkoitus vain patsastella rannalla ne päällä? Kaikenkaikkiaan kuitenkin aika laimea ilmestys.

I got the new Novita-magazine too (Finnish knit magazine) on Friday. And, well, what could I say about it...there were some doable patterns. Lots of empire waists and small tops and bikinis, but what could you expect from a summer issue. I thought the bikini thingies were funny...I can't but wonder what they are like when wet. Or is the idea just to be seen on the beach in them? All in all not a very memorable magazine.

Mutta on sitä muutakin tullut tehtyä viikonloppuna paitsi neulottua, kävin nimittäin joogan intensiivikurssilla. Se oli sivananda-koulukuntaan kuuluvaa voimajoogaa. Näinpä kuntoklubillani ilmoituksen ja ajattelin että voihan tuotakin kokeilla. Kurssia oli kaksi tuntia sekä lauantaina ja sunnuntaina. Yllättävän rankkaa puuhaa, lauantain jälkeen oli useampia lihaksia kipeänä, jopa sellaisista paikoista mitä en olisi osannut odottaa. Mutta ihan hauskaa...jospa sitä kävisi vaikka joogatunneillakin tässä vielä.

But I have done other things besides knitting this weekend namely yoga. I saw an ad at my healt club about inensive yoga class and I decided to try that. It was some kind of power yoga, of sivananda school. Two hours both days, on Saturday and Sunday. Surprisingly strenuous excercise, after Saturday I had several sore muscles even in places I would have not thought. But quite fun...maybe I'll take up yoga classes as well.

Uusimpia hankintoja - Latest acquisitions

Keskeneräisten töiden paraati täällä senkun jatkuu. Mitään ei ole valmistunut ja hamsterikuukausikin loppui jo (enkä ole vielä ostanut yhtään uutta lankaa). En siis saanut epätoivon vimmallakaan neulomaani pikkupuseroa valmiiksi. Viikonlopun sain neulottua aika kivasti, mutta sitten alkoivatkin vaikeudet: punttisalilla piti käydä maanantaina, tiistaina oli Leppävaaratapaaminen (siellä sain sentään hihat tehtyä), keskiviikkona piti käydä ystävän kanssa kaljalla ja kuuntelemassa Dublin-opastusta (Dublin kutsuu talvilomalla huhtikuun alussa) ja tänäänkin piti käydä ystävän kanssa nauttimassa teetä ja leivoksia (Mmmmm....leivoksia....mmmm). Neulominen on siis jäänyt hieman taka-alalle, mutta kyllä se siitä.

The parade of unfinished knits here at Knitter's block continues. Nothing is finished and the yarn diet month is over (and I haven't bought any new yarn yet). I did not manage to finish my small top even with all the desperate knitting I did. I managed to knit all weekend quite nicely, but then the troubles started: Monday I had to go to the gym, Tuesday was the Leppävaara knit-meet (though I did manage to knit the sleeves there), Wednesday I met a friend over some beers and Dublin advice (Dublin calls on my winter holiday, the beginning of April) and today I met another friend over some tea and cakes (Mmmm....cakes...mmmm). So knitting has not been a priority in my life this week, but I have managed to get something done.

Ja tässä se mitä olen tehnyt. Ja kyllä, kuva on huono, mutta miten ihmeessä sitä voi saada hyvän kuvan pyöröneuleena neulotusta puserosta? Olen hiukan kainalonkohdan yläpuolella, eli olen liittänyt hihat vartaloon ja aloitellut raglankavennuksia. Malli mukailee siis olemassaolevaa kaupasta ostettua silkki/cashmirtoppia (lankasnobius on muuttunut yleissnobiudeksi nähtävästi). Pusero on hieman muotoiltu ja siihen tulee raglanhihat ja neulon sen pyörönä ilman sauman saumaa. Lanka on jo aiemminkin mainittu Lana Grossan Merino superfein, puikot 3mm (argh! Olisi pitänyt järkevästi valita jotain paksumpaa jotta olisin saanut jotain valmista ennen lankahamstereiden loppua). Kuvassa eivät värit kovin hyvin näy, mutta se on nyt niin muodikasta pätkävärjättyä väreinä mm. lemmikinsininen, punaoranssi, fuksianpunainen ja harmaa. Vihreää löytyy myös ja tummaa lilaa. Eli siis paljon erilaisia värejä. Lopputulos on kuitenkin yllättävän mukava. Yritän ottaa viikonloppuna vähän parempia kuvia.

Above is the something I've managed to do. And yes, the picture is not good but how can you get a good picture from a top knitted on circular needles? I'm slightly above the armpit point meaning that I've joined the sleeve to the body and have started the raglan decreases. The model is somewhat similar to an existing store-bought silk/cashmere top (yarn snobism has apparently widened to general snobism). The top is slightly fitted and there will be raglan sleeves and I'm knitting it with circular needles and it will be completely seamless. The yarn I'm using is the previously mentioned Lana Grossa Merino superfein, needles 3mm (argh, I should have chosen something thicker so that I could have finished it before the end of stash reduction month but apparently I wasn't smart enough). The colours are not very clear in the picture but the yarn is ah, so fashionable multicolour yarn, with colours like sky blue, reddish orange, dark fuchsia and grey. There's also green and dark lilac. So lots of different colours. The result is surprisingly nice though. I'll try to get better pictures during the weekend.

Jos siis kerran en ole ostanut lisää lankaa, niin mitä uusia hankintoja olen siis tehnyt? Neulekirjoja tietysti! Näitä tilailin hamsterikuukauden aikana kun sitä ei ollut kielletty ;-) Osa on vielä matkalla, mutta ensimmäinen saapui tänään: Montse Stanleyn Knitter's Handbook. Kyseessä on aika tuhti opus, sisällysluetteloineen kaikkineen peräti 319 sivua. Ja niinkuin nimi sanookin, kyseessä on lähdeteos. Täältä löytyy neuvoa monenlaiseen kavennukseen, levennykseen, silmukoiden luontiin jne. Olen vasta hiukan selaillut opusta, mutta kiinnostavan näköinen kirja.

So if I haven't bought any new yarn what are the promised new acquisitions then? Why knitting books of course. These I ordered during the stash reduction month since that wasn't forbidden ;-) Some of them are still on the way but the first one I got today, the one above: Knitter's Handbook by Montse Stanley. It's a pretty heavy volume, index and all included a total of 319 pages. And as the name already mentiones it's more of a reference book. How-to book for all kinds of increases, decreases etc. I've only just glanced at it but it seems quite interesting.

Ja vaikka en normaalisti paljon päivän tapahtumia täällä kommentoikaan niin kyllä täytyy ihmetellä päivän kolarisumaa. Kaikilla Helsingin sisääntuloväylillä kolisi enemmän tai vähemmän ja uskomattomat yli 400 autoa oli osallisena ketjukolareissa. Siis uskomatonta, ajatelkaa mikä määrä! Ikävämpää on vielä se, että kolme ihmistä kuoli turmissa. Täytyy kyllä ihmetellä että miten moinen on mahdollista. Mielestäni keli ei nyt niin huono aamulla ollut, kyllähän sitä lunta tuprutti ja näkyvyys oli paikoitellen huono, mutta silti. Ei se mikään lumimyrsky sentään ollut. Onko se sitten niin, että jotkut ihmiset eivät enää osaa sopeuttaa ajotapojaan vallitsevaan säähän ja pitää ajaa niin kovaa kuin kärrystä lähtee? Eihän tuommoiseen kyllä tarvita kuin muutama kämmeltäjä ja sitten käy noin. Hohhoh. Ei voi muuta sanoa.

And although I don't normally much comment on current affairs here I have to wonder what has happened in Helsinki today. All major incoming roads were more or less blocked because of car crashes and accidents and an astounding amount of over 400 cars were involved in these (and the major incoming roads can be counted with the fingers of a one hand) chain crashes. Can you believe of the amount? What's even more sad is that three people died in one of these accidents (the worst). I can't but wonder how that was possible. I don't think the weather whas particularly bad this morning, I mean sure it snowed and the visibility was a bit poor at times, but still. It wasn't a blizzard. Is it so that some people can't adjust their driving habits and speed to the prevailing weather anymore and they have to drive as fast as they can no matter what? You don't need many goofballs to cause an accident and then look what happens. Sigh.. Can't say more than that.

Epätoivoisia keinoja - Desperate measures

Hamsterikuukausi lähenee loppuaan (lopettamispäivä 15.3) ja yritän tässä vielä epätoivoisesti saada jotain valmiiksi. Maxwell parka joutui taas jäähylle, vaikka loppu on jo lähellä: vetoketju on ommeltu (huom. päätin ommella sen vain kiinni enkä jäänyt surffailemaan parasta tapaa tehdä se) ja toinen hiha on neulottu (pyöriön tein jo kolmannen kerran). Eli eiköhän se siitä. Ja viime kirjoituksessani mainostamani Tallinnanlangasta aloittamani neule on purettu. Joo-oh, siitä taisi tulla liian kapea kuitenkin. Siispä sekin pääsee takaisin marinoitumaan. Mutta mitä siis ryhdyin tekemään? Noh, nyt on vuorossa kaapissa olevaa puseroa mukaileva tekele Lana Grossan Merino Superfein-langasta (Tallinnanlöytöjä tämäkin). Tarkoituksena olisi saada aikaan lyhythihainen pikkupusero jonka voi sujauttaa vaikka jakun alle. Tarkoitus on hyvä, mutta toteutuksen kanssa voi käydä vähän niin ja näin. Nimittäin kaupassa oli lankaa vain 250g enkä ole ollenkaan varma riittääkö se. Nähtäväksi jää...ehkä siitä tulee sitten hihaton toppi.

Yarn diet is getting closer to the end (ending date 15.3) and I'm desperately trying to get something finished before that. Poor Maxwell is on break again even though the end is near: the zipper is in place (note: I decided to just sew that on instead of surfing around the best way to do it) and the other sleeve is knitted (sleeve top was knitted three times). So it'll get there. And the Tallin wool thingy I wrote about in my last entry, well, it's frogged. Yeah, it was going to be too narrow. So that'll go back to the stash to wait for better times. But what am I doing now then? Well, now I'm trying to make something similar to an existing top from Lana Grossa Merino Superfein yarn (this is from Tallinn also). I'm trying to make a short-sleeved top that I can wear with a jacket or something. The spirit is willing but the yarn may be weak. They only had 250g of the yarn at the store and I'm not at all sure if it'll be enough. We'll see...maybe it'll be a sleeveless top then.

Aloituskuumetta - Startitis

Enpä ole vieläkään saanut Maxwellia valmiiksi (olen sentään päätellyt kaikki langanpäät ja tökkinyt vetoketjun paikoilleen nuppineuloilla) mutta uutta pitäisi aloittaa. Kaivelin eilen lankavarastoani ja mietiskelin. Nythän olisi oivallinen aika aloittaa kevätneuleet, jotta olisi jotain kivaa päällepantavaa kun vihdoinkin rupeaa lämpenemään. Just joo. Eipä paljon puuvillaneuleet innosta kun tänäänkin meinasin palelluttaa nenäni ulkosalla (-11C ja tuulta). Eipä innostanut eilenkään, ja niinpä kouraan tarttui Tallinnasta ostamani 100% villalanka.

I still haven't finished Maxwell (though I have weaved in all the ends and pinned the zipper on) but I have an acute case of the startitis. I dug around in my stasth yesterday and pondered. Now would be an ideal time to start spring knits so that I'd have something nice to wear when it finally starts to warmp up. Yeah, right. Not very inspiring when even this morning I almost managed to freeze my nose outside (-11c and windy). And I wasn't too inspired yesterday either, so I grabbed the 100% wool yarn I bought from Tallinn.

Siinä on aivan ihanat värit! Ja aivan hirveästi kerittävää! Minulla oli tätä 2 vyyhtiä, noin 250g kappale. Joista toinen on tässä, tästä näkee värit hyvin.

It has so beautiful colours! And so lot of yarn to wind into a ball! I had this two skeins, about 250g apiece. One of which is here, to better see the colours.

Ja toinen on tässä, kerittynä kauniiksi keskeltäpurkautuvaksi keräksi. Tai no, voiko tuota hirvitystä edes keräksi tituleerata, ehkä möhkö olisi parempi (huomatkaa kuvaan mittasuhteiden vuoksi otettu tulitikkurasia).

And the other one is here, all wound up into a lovely center-pull ball. Well, if the monster can be even called a ball, maybe a blimp would be better (note the match box in the picture, included for reference purposes only).

Ja täytyy sanoa, että kyllä kesti tuo keriminen. Jossain vaiheessa kaipasin kyllä kovasti jotain mekaanista vimpaletta omien käsien ja polvien tilalle. Mutta loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin. Nyt on puikoilla jo noin viisi senttiä resoria. Lanka on vähän karheaa, ei kauhean vahvaa ja se on aika rasvaista. Olen aloitellut uudesta Moda-lehdestä neuletakkia (malli 10 jos jollain on lehti). Lankahan ei tietenkään suostu istumaan haluttuun tiheyteen (enkä halua pienentää puikkokokoa, se on jo nyt 2.5mm) ja niinpä vähän luovasti sovelsin silmukkamääriä. Ja pahasti näyttää siltä että hieman leveämpi sittenkin...ääk, ei kait tästä purkuhommiin tarvitse ruveta? Taidanpa miettiä sitä vähän ja sillävälin ommella Maxwell-paran vetoketjun.

And I must say that it took a long while to get the skein into a ball. At some point I had a great longing for some kind of mechanical thingy to do the job instead of my own hands and knees. But all's well that ends well. Now I've got about 5cm of rib on my needles. The yarn is a bit rough, not very strong and it is quite greasy. I've started a cardigan from a Finnish magazine called Moda. The yarn won't abide to any gauge demands of course (and I do not want to go down needle sizes anymore since I'm already down to 2.5mm) and so I did some creative size-adjustment. And it does begin to seem like it should be a bit more wider...gasp, I hope I don't have to go all rippy? I think I'll think on that a bit more and while I'm thinking sew the zipper on poor Maxwell.

Valmista - Finished

Pitkästä aikaa on jotain valmista: Vintage Velvet. Lankaa meni ne neljä kerää Cash Irohaa mitä minulla oli (kerät olivatkin 40g eikä 50 kuten luulin). Parasta huivissa on mielestäni se, että siinä ei ole oikeastaan oikeaa tai nurjaa puolta, vaan molemmat puolet ovat kutakuinkin samanlaisia. No, identtisiähän niistä nyt ei millään saa, mutta tarpeeksi lähelle kuitenkin. Minusta huivin pitää olla sellainen, että sitä voi käyttää mitenpäin vaan, ja tämä on sellainen. Huivi tarvitsee vielä jonkinlaista käsittelyä, höyrytystä tms. En ole vielä päättänyt.

Something finished for a change: Vintage Velvet from Scarf Style. It took all the Cash Iroha I had, namely four skeins (the skeins were 40g each instead of the 50 I thought). The best about this scarf in my opinion is that is doesn't really have a right or wrong side but both sides are almost the same. Well, it's impossible to make them completely identical, but they're close anyway. I think a scarf should be so that you don't have to worry about how you put it on and this is like that. It still needs some kind of blocking, just haven't decided what yet.

Ne on ne madot - It's them worms

Eilen oli Helsinki-tapaaminen. Ajattelin että eihän siellä mitään lankaa hiplata, kun on dieettikuukausi ja kaikkea, mutta hah, kuinka väärässä sitä voikaan ihminen olla. Sitähän siellä juuri tehtiin, hiplattiin lankaa...juoruamisen ja neulomisen ohessa ;-) Jokatapauksessa saldo oli positiivinen: Päivikki toi minulle Wetterhoffin Silvian/Silvillan lankakartan. Huom. en siis saanut lankaa, ainoastaan lankakartan, dieettini siis pitää. Suomen ensimmäinen Interweave Knits oli myöskin saapunut Akateemiseen (tähän ei siis lueta ihmisten henk. koht. tilaamia kappaleita) ja yksi sun toinen lähtikin hieman "ajoissa kotiin"...Akateemisen kirjakaupan kautta. Minäkin kävin hakemassa kappaleen. En tiedä neulonko siitä mitään, mutta pitäähän sitä ostaa että sitä myytäisiin täällä jatkossakin!

Yesterday was Helsinki meet. I thought that there would be no yarn to fondle there, since it's diet month and all but hah, how wrong can a human being be. That's just what we did, fondled yarn...amongst all the talking and knitting ;-) Anyway the result was positive: Päivikki brought me Wetterhoff's Silvia/Silvilla yarn samples. Note: I did not get any yarn, just the samples, my diet still holds. The first issue of Interviewe Knits in Finland had also arrived at Akateeeminen kirjakauppa (this does not include private orders) and there were more than one who "left home early"...via bookshop. I also went to collect my piece. I don't know if I'll ever knit anything from that, but I just bought it so that it'll be available in the future also!

Ja neulominen sitten...Explosion huivi on noin 99.9% valmis mutta vielä töissä (päättelykerroksesta tuli liian tiukka, joten se pitää tehdä uudestaan). Tässäpä teille kuva huivista ja minusta (onpa vaikeaa saada itsestään otettua kuvia).

And as for the knits...the Explosion scarf is about 99.9% done but still at work (the cast-off was too tight so has to be done again). Here's a picture of the scarf and me (boy, is it had to try to take a photo of yourself).

Lisää huivia tulossa. Nyt on vuorossa Vintage Velvet kirjasta Scarf Style. Lankana Miamista ostamani Noron Cash Iroha. Olenkin ennättänyt sitä neuloa jo melkein kolmen kerän verran. Tässäpä kuvaa...huomatkaa saamani silmukkamerkit (jos tuosta kuvasta nyt mitään näkee, se on vähän hämärä).

More scarves on the way. This time it's Vintage Velvet from the book Scarf Style. The yarn is the Noro Cash Iroha I bought from Miami. I've managed to knit it almost three skeins worth. Here's a picture...note the stitch-markers I got (if you can see anything in that photo, it's a bit dark).

Ja mitäpä sitä sanoisin Cash Irohasta. Noh, lankaa on mukava neuloa ja värikin on aivan ihana (sävy 88, ametisti). Lanka on sellaista vaihtelevaa, välillä löyhiä kohtia. Kait se on tyyliseikka, mutta kun kohtasin tämän, en ollutkaan enää kovin huvittunut. Mielestäni tuo möykky on jo vähän turhan suuri neulottavaksi mukaan. En ihan olisi odottanut moista tuon hintaisesta langasta.

And what to tell about Cash Iroha. Well, the yarn is nice to knit and the colour is absolutely lovely (shade 88, amethyst). The yarn is sort of variable, loosely spinned parts here and there. I guess it's a style thing, but when I encountered this I wasn't so amused anymore. I think that lump is a bit too big to knit into the scarf. I would not have expected something like that in a yarn that price.

Mutta mitäpä kuuluu muille neulomuksille, Maxwellille ja Explosion-huiville? No, räjähdys hauskuuttaa minua vieläkin töissä, ja vaati hiukan purkamista. Totesin että saan lämpöhalvauksen jos yritän kietoa sitä useampaa kertaa kaulani ympärille (ja sitäpaitsi pää häviää moiseen paksuuteen kokonaan) joten siitä pitää tulla reikähuivi (ts. siihen tulee reikä mistä tökkään toisen pään läpi). Siispä se vaati purkamista noin kerän verran. Ja sivuhuomautuksena: sitä on todella pirullista purkaa muutamaa kerrosta enempää. En suosittele! Mutta homma etenee. Ja Maxwell on jäähyllä. Olin viikonloppuna muissa maisemissa joten Maxwell ei edennyt. Pyrin saamaan sen valmiiksi tällä viikolla, ostinhan jo vetoketjunkin!

But what about my other knittings, Maxwell and Explosion scarf? Well, explosion keeps things interesting at work still and it demanded a bit of frogging. I came to the conclusion that I'd die of a heat stroke if I was to try to wrap it around my neck more than once (and besides I would have lost my head amongst all that fluffyness) so it needs to become a keyhole scarf and had to be frogged about a ball's worth. And as a note: it's really difficult to rip more than a couple of rounds. I do not recommend! But it's coming along. And Maxwell is resting. I was away during the weekend so Maxwell didn't proceed at all. But I'm planning on finishing it this week, because I already bought a zipper and all!

Iltani nojatuolina - My evening as an armchair

Tässä kirjoittelen yksikätisenä vaativien silmien alla. Yksikätisyys on onneksi vain tilapäistä eikä edes vakavaa (neulontaura ei ole siis vaarassa) vaan johtuu siitä että kissa sai akuutin "tahtoo syliin ja rapsutusta ja HETI"-kohtauksen ja tunki syliin rapsutettavaksi tähän tietokoneen ääreen. Toinen käsi on valjastettu kissanrapsutustehtävään. En siis tiedä tuleeko neulomisesta tänään enää mitään, mutta bonuksena on ainakin lämmintä.

Here I am typing, one-handed, under the supervision of demanding eyes. The one-handedness is fortunately only temporary and not even serious (so my knitting career is in no danger) but due to the cat getting an acute attac of "I want a lap and scratching and NOW" and got in my lap here at the computer. So the other hand is performing the cat-scratching duty. I'm not sure if I will be able to knit any tonight, but at least I stay warm.

Tässäpä todistetta siitä, että olen tehnyt muutakin kuin harmitellut Maxwellia. Olen edennyt Explosion-huivissani näin pitkälle. Tähän pisteeseen pääseminen on vaatinut kaksi kerää, ja kolme on vielä jäljellä. Ajattelin käyttää kaiken langan huivin tekemiseen, koska haluan että siitä tulee muhkea.

Here's some proof that I've done something else besides obsess about Maxwell. I've reach this state of my Explosion-scarf. To reach this point required twho balls and there's three left. I thought I'd use all of the yarn to make the scarf because I like it to be long and fluffy.

Ajattelin aloittaessani että tehdään sitten kerralla hyvä, eikä parane tehdä virheitä, sillä tämän purkaminen ei varmaankaan ole hauskaa. Itseasiassa ei sitä niin vaikea olekaan purkaa, kuten huomasin tänään kun tein virheen (onnistuin hukkaamaan kolme silmukkaa jonnekin mystisesti, ilmeisesti keränvaihtokohdassa). Mutta katsokaa kuinka nerokkaan keksinnön tein estämään lankakerän pyöriminen lattialla (tästä ei kyllä etsitä päätä kerän sisältä): ruuvimeisselin monet käyttötarkoitukset.

I thought when I began knitting that right, better make it good the first time, and no mistakes, since I bet it's not nice to rip this yarn. As a matter of fact it's not so hard, as I discovered today when I made a mistake (I managed to loose three stitches somewhere, probably while beginning a new ball). But look how ingenious invention I made to stop the ball from rolling around on the floor (impossible to find the end on the inside from this yarn): the many uses of a screwdriver.

Ja tämä on siis töissä, työneulontana. Siitä vihreät sohvat ja ruuvimeisselit. Nyt on "mitataan paljon"-vaihe jossa pitää istua tönkkönä tietokoneen ääressä ja mikäs sen parempaa odotustekemistä kuin neulonta...aikaisemmin pelasin nettipelejä :-) Kaulaliina pysyy töissä siihen asti kunnes joko mittaukset loppuu tai kaulaliina valmistuu, kumpi nyt tapahtuu ensin.

And this is at work, my work-knit. Hence the green sofas and screwdrivers. I'm now at "measuring a lot"-phase where I have to sit tightly in front of a computer and what could I do better while waiting than knit...I used to play net games :-) The scarf will remain at work until I've finished the measurements or the scarf is ready, whichever comes first.

Vaivaa Maxwellista - Maxwellian effort

Tuntuu ettei editystä tapahdu ollenkaan. Olen nyt samassa pisteessä kuin noin viikko sitten, eli poimimassa silmukoita kaulusta varten. Tosin tässä välissä purin etu- ja takakappaleesta useita senttejä pois ja kudoin ne uudestaan, tökin nuppineuloilla neuletta ja itseäni kun yritin sovitella sitä jonka tuloksena purin hihasta pois noin viisi senttiä ja kudoin hihapyöriön uudestaan. Toinen hiha odottaa vielä käsittelyä. Ja kortinlukija kieltäytyi yhteistyöstä, joten en edes voi näyttää kuinka paljon lankaa siitä lähti. Ei maar, nyt pitää kyllä päästä kävelylle selvittämään päätä. Ja sitten voisi vähän aikaa tehdä jotain muuta. Taidan mennä takaisin Maxwellin luo vasta kun olen vähän rauhoittunut. En kyllä ymmärrä miten olen onnistunut tekemään moisen sopimattoman tekeleen. Enkä voi edes syyttää ohjetta.

It feels like there's no progress. I'm at the same point I was about a week ago, which is picking up the stitches to make the collar. Although in the time between I ripped several centimeters from both the back and front pieces and reknit them, stuck needles into myself and the sweater when trying it on, and as a result of that I ripped about five centimeters from the sleeve and reknit the sleeve cap. I've got the other sleeve waiting. And now the card reader refused to co-operate so I can't even show you how much yarn was left over from all that re-knitting. I think I need to go for a walk to clear my head. And then it's time for something new, for a change. I'll get back to Maxwell after I've had a chance to cool my feelings a bit. I don't know how I've managed to make such a non-fitting thing. And I can't even blame the pattern.

HAH!

Hamsterikuukauden mahtava lankasaldo tähänmennessä: 10g Novita Huopasta kissanleluun. Ihan päätä huimaa moinen vauhti... Eipä silti, kyllä mä olen neulonut, tänäänkin, mutta sitä nyt ei vain lasketa. Olen purkanut Maxwellin ylisuuria kädenteitä ja neulonut niitä uudestaan. Siis ihan hirveästi ylimääräistä! Olen tullut vähän siihen tulokseen, että mulla on jotain virhekäsityksiä mitoistani, kun yleensä tuppaan tekemään liian suurta. Millähän siitä pääsisi eroon?

The saldo for the stash reduction month so far: 10g of Novita Huopanen for the cat toy. The speed makes my head spin... Although, I've knitted, today also, but that just doesn't count (it's not new). I've ripped and re-knitted the over-large armholes of Maxwell. So much extra! I've come to the conclusion that I have some misconceptions about how bit I am, since I tend to knit too big items. I wonder how I could rid myself of that?

Ja nyt suru-uutisiin: bongasin Cannesista yhden lankakaupan, jonne Hannu kilttinä miehenä teki iskun...tai siis yritti. Mokoma putiikki oli kiinni 21. päivään asti. Siis voiko huonommin enää mennä. Grr! Ja kaiken sen työn jälkeen...(vaati runsasta googlaamista, ei ollut helppoa, ei).

And now something sad: I found a yarn shop in Cannes and Hannu kindly went to visit it...or tried to. The damn shop was closed until 21st. Could it get any worse? Grr! And after all the trouble I went...(it took a lot of googling, wasn't easy, nope).

No, ensinnäkin kolme kerää tiilenpunaista Debbie Bliss wool/cotton-lankaa. En tiedä vielä mitä langasta tulee, mutta kaunista tuo on kovin.

I got a packet today from my secret friend from Sweden (I'm taking part too in the Nordic Secret Friend-swap). And to be more precise, it's from Marika. And what did I find inside said package? Well, first there were three balls of Debbie Bliss wool/cotton yarn. I don't know yet what I will make of it but is is lovely yarn.

Sitten sieltä tupsahti näitä: itsetehtyjä neulemerkkejä, kokonaista viisitoista kappaletta! Kauniita nekin ovat, kiitoksia kovasti ei-enää-niin-salainen ystäväni :-)

Neulontarintamalla on hiukan hiljaista. Missä välissäpä sitä oikein olisin ehtinyt kutoa kun joka ilta melkein on jossain riekuttu? Mutta sainpa tehtyä kissalle lelun Marjutin ohjeen mukaan. Tosin en neulonut mitään hörhelöitä siihen mukaan, mielessä on vielä liian hyvin edellinen episodi kun kissa oli nuoleskellut nukkaa sisäänsä. Putki ei mielestäni ihan täydellisesti huovuttunut enkä sitten oikein saanut tilsittyä sinne kissanminttua kunnolla sisälle, niinpä leikkasin raa'asti siihen keskelle reiän. Menoa ei moinen tuntunut haittaavaan ja pötkylää höykytettiinkin oikein innolla.

Knitwise it's been a bit slow. How am I supposed to knit when I'm somewhere after work almost every night? But I made a cat toy form Marjut's blog. Though I did not knit any fuzzy yarn to it because I was thinking of the previous episode with fuzz-ingestion. The tube felted a bit unevenly and I did not manage to stick the catnip inside so I brutally cut a hole in the middle. But it did not seem to matter, however, and the tube was really given a whomping.

Tarkkasilmäisimmät ovatkin varmaan jo tässä vaiheessa huomanneet että blogissani on taas kuvia. Mitenkäs se nyt on sitten mahdollista kun kamera kerran on Hannulla matkassa? Noh, iltana eräänä istuessani tässä koneella siirsin katseeni hiukan etuvasemmalle ja siinähän se nökötti, kamera. Eipä se ollutkaan matkailemassa. Senhetkiset tunteeni pystyn parhaiten kuvaamaan käyttämällä Homer Simpsonin kuolematonta ilmaisua: D'oh!

Those of you with keen eyesight have probably noticed by now that there's pictures in my blog again. And how is that possible then when the camera is abroad with Hannu? Well, one evening while I was sitting here at the computer I moved my eyes a bit to the front left and there it was, the camera. It wasn't abroad at all. My feelings at that particular moment can be best expressed by using the immortal expression of Homer Simpson: D'oh!

Helsinki on taas saapunut vuotuiseen "pirun kylmää"-vyöhykkeeseen. Katsottuani mittaria tänä aamuna täytyi kaivaa hattu työmatkavarusteeksi (ja jos tietäisitte kuinka syvää inhoa tunnen kaikkia ja kaikenlaisia päähineitä kohtaan tietäisitte kuinka kylmä todella on). Minun lämpötilarajani tuolle tilalle on noin -15 astetta (lämpötila tällä hetkellä -16.7), mitenkäs teillä? Eipä silti, onhan se toisaalta kivaa kun ulkona on kylmää. Se on hyvä tekosyy syödä epäterveellisiä ruokia (sitä tarvitsee ylimääräistä energiaa kun on kylmä) ja istua sisällä neulomassa. Mutta huomatkaa tässä sana "ulkona". Se tarkoittaa sitä että kylmä pysyy siellä missä kylmän on hyvä olla, eli ulkona ja minä pysyn siellä missä minun on hyvä olla eli sisällä lämpimässä. Tässä olisikin hyvä tilaisuus uudelle laille: ei tarvitse mennä töihin kun on liian kylmä.

Helsinki has arrived to the annual "bloody cold"-zone. After checking the thermometer this morning I had to dig out a hat (and if you knew the depth of my intense dislike for headgear of any kind, you'd know how cold it really is). My temperature limit for that state is about -15C (the temperature outside at this moment is -16.7C), how about you? On the other hand, I do like it when it's cold outside. It's a good excuse to eat unhealthy food (you need all the extra energy when it's cold) and to sit inside to knit. But note the word "outside" here. It means that the cold stays where the cold is happy, which is outside, and I stay where I'm happy, which is indoors where it's warm. Here's a good opportunity to make a new law: one does not have to go to work when it's too cold.

Neulomisesta puheenollen - tai no, eipä siitä paljon puhetta kerry. Enpä ole kauheasti ehtinyt sitä tekemään. Maxwell makaa vieläkin surkeassa hieman puretussa tilassaan sohvalla enkä tiedä koska se siitä muuttuu. Aloitin kyllä eilen tekemään kaulaliinaa Adriafil Explosion-langasta. Minulla oli tarkoituksena neuloa sitä yhdessä oranssin alpakkalangan kanssa, mutta kun kokeilin sitä ihan sinällään, pidin tuloksesta niin paljon että päätin säästää alpakkalangan muihin projekteihin. Mutta tämä siis oli eilen, ennen uutta jääkautta. Nyt tekisi vain mieli neuloa jotain jostain todella lämpimästä langasta (haa...tästä syystä aloin siis neuloa luonnonvalkoista mohairpuseroa viime talvena). Enpä tosin tiedä milloin moinen onnistuu: tänään on ranskantunti ja lisäksi pitäisi vielä tehdä kakku.

Speaking of knitting - though, not that there's much to talk about. Haven't been doing it much lately. Maxwell is still lying on the sofa in its sorry partly ripped state and I have no idea when that will change. I did start yesterday to make a scarf out of my Adriafil Explosion-yarn. I had planned to knit it together with some orange alpaca yarn, but when I tried it by itself I liked the result so much that I decided to save the alpaca for another project. But this was yesterday, before the new ice age began. Now I just feel like knitting something really warm (haa...so this was the reason I started that off-white mohair sweater last winter). Not that I have any idea when I have time to knit such things: today is French lesson and I have to make a cake too.

Ei lisää lankaa (onneksi!), mutta unohdin vain sanoa pari asiaa.

2. Nämä pikkusukat päätyivät omistajalleen, ja sopivuus oli täydellinen! Kaikki ovat tyytyväisiä. Tai ainakin minä ja äiti. Pikkuneiti on siinä iässä (7kk) jolloin vaatteet ovat ikäviä ja niistä pitäisi päästä mahdollisimman pian eroon jos taidot vain siihen riittäisivät.

2. These little socks ended up with their recipient today and it was a perfect fit! Everyone is happy. Or at least me and the mom. The little miss is at that age (7 months) where clotes are not nice and should be gotten rid of as fast as possible if only the fingers were up to the will.

Lankahamstereita varten lupasin tehdä tiliä lankavarastostani, jotta edes jonkunlainen käsitys tulisi siitä, mistä pitäisi päästä eroon (edes osasta). Minähän olen kokoajan ollut sitä mieltä, että eihän minulla mitään lankaa ole, paljoa ainakaan. Tuonnehan ne mahtuvat yläkaappiin...ja työhuoneen nurkkaan...ja vaatekaapista taisi löytyä jokunen nyssykkä....ja itseasiassa sohvapöytä on ontto ja sinne sisään on hyvä tunkea kamaa. Nojoo, eli löytyyhän sitä kun oikein tarkastelee, mutta määrä oli minullekin yllätys, melkein 18 kiloa!!!

For the stash reduction diet month I promised to take a good look at my stash so I'd have some idea what I need to get rid of (at least part of it). I've said all along that I don't have that much yarn. There they are, in the upper cabinet...and on the corner of the spare bedroom...and maybe there's a bag or two in my closet...and to be honest the coffee table is hollow and inside is a good place to put stuff in. Ok, so there's some yarn when you look closely, but the amount was a surprise even to me: almost 18 kilos!!

Eli lankaa riittävästi. Lisäksi löysin pari UFOA: neulepaita tuosta samaisesta luonnonvalkoisesta Novita Chic-langasta (en ymmärrä miksi kuvittelin moista pystyväni pitämään, se kutittaa), Sveitsistä ostamastani Tahiti-langasta pusero (lanka on ihan juuri sama kuin Gedifra Aragona), keltaisesta Novita Maxi-langasta pusero (en pidä oikeastaan keltaisesta) ja Novita Tennessee-langasta neuletakki (kaatui hihojen uudelleenneulomiseen). Lisäksi uusimpia kesken olevia, joita siis aktiivisesti neulon ovat Merino's Otto-langasta Maxwell (jota olen purkamassa vähän) ja OnLine Kaschmerino-langasta Debbie Bliss-neuletakki kelttikuviolla (pitäisi aloittaa toinen etukappale).

So enough yarn. I also discovered a couple of UFO:s: a sweater from that previously mentioned off-white Novita Chic (I can't understand what I though, I can't wear mohair, itchy), from a yarn I got from Switzerland a cardigan (the yarn is exactly the same as Gedifra Aragona), a sweater out of yellow Novita Maxi-cotton yarn (I don't really like yellow) and a cardigan out of Novita Tennessee cotton yarn (I got tired of re-knitting the sleeves). Also I've got two knits I'm knitting at the moment, Maxwell from Merino's Otto (that I'm in the process of ripping a bit and re-knitting) and Debbie Bliss-wraparound top from OnLine Kaschmerino (needs a second front piece).

Harjoittelua - Practice

Harjoittelen tässä, kun mies lähtee huomenissa matkalle ja vie mun digikamerani mukanaan. Eli joudun siis bloggailemaan viikon verran ilman kuvia. Kauheata! Tai no, tehän tässä enemmän kärsitte kuin minä. Joudutte lukemaan kuivia (ja välillä omituisia) neulejuttujani ilman kevennyksiä. Muhahaa!! (Ja tässä vaiheessa kannattanee huomauttaa että en ole mennyt vielä täysin sekaisin, olen vain napsinut erinäisiä käsikauppalääkkeitä siinä toivossa että hengitys edes hiukan helpottuisi - flunssa tuli takaisin ja toi kaverinsa mukaan juhliin. Tässä sitä niiskutetaan pää turvoksissa. Ei kivaa, ei.)

I'm practicing here, the man goes away tomorrow and takes my digital camera with him. So I have to blog for about a week without any pictures. Terrible! Well, you'll be the ones to suffer more than me. You have to read my dry (and sometimes odd) knit-related ramblings without any pretty pictures. Mwahahaa!! (And I think at this point I'd like to mention that I haven't gone completely bonkers yet, I've just popped various over the counter pills in the hope that my breathing would get a bit easier - the flu came back and brought its friends over for the party. Here I am sniffing my night away. Not nice. Not one bit. No.)

Mutta asiaan: kävin minäkin kirja-alessa, Suomalaisessa. Sieltä tarttui mukaan monenkin mainostama Lesley Stanfieldin Kauneimmat neulemallit (luulisin että se on tämä suomeksi). Siinä näytti olevan ihan käypiä neulemalleja, joita selailin illalla innokkaasti kun päätin tehdä koetilkkua joskus Tallinnasta ostamastani Adriafil Graphic-langasta (minulla väriä 96). Tästä luulin haluavani huivin, mutta lanka ei ole yhtään huivihtavaa, eli se on päättänyt haluta villapuseroksi. Tässä nyt on vain pienoinen ongelma: minulla on lankaa 5 kerää (eli 250g) eikä siitä saa minulle villapuseroa vaikka yht'äkkiä laihtuisin kymmenen kiloa tai enemmän. Ja ennenkuin kukaan ehtii ehdottaa sitä ilmiselvintä: langanhankintamatkaa Tallinnaan, niin huomauttaisin että koko kaupassa ei tainnut olla sitä enempää. Nii-in, pitää aina ihastua sävyihin jota ei saa tarpeeksi. Eli tarvittaisiin siis jotain muuta kaveriksi. Ja lankahamsterit-dieetti alkaa jo tiistaina...tässäpä dilemma! Suunnitelmana vielä aikaisemmin tänään oli mennä huomenna Menitaan, mutta mokoman nuhan ilmaantuminen romutti suunnitelmia hieman...siis täytyykö minun turvautua olemassaolevaan varastooni koko kuukausi?

But to the point: I went to the book-sales too. And I also, like some of my fellow knitbloggers, bought the Lesley Stanfield book (I think it's this one, but in Finnish). There seemed to be some really nice patterns there, and I leafed through it this evening when I decided to try out the yarn I bought some time ago from Tallinn, Adriafil Graphic (I've got number 96). I thought I wanted a scarf made out of it, but the yarn isn't scarvish, so it decided to want to be a sweater. There's a slight problem here though: I've only got 5 balls of it (meaning 250g) and I can't get it to become a sweater for me even if I were to suddenly lose ten kilos or more. And before anyone suggests the obvious: a yarn-foraging expedition to Tallinn, I'd like to point out that I think that was how much they had it at the store. Yeah, good idea to go for the shades that are in short supply. So I'd need something else as a pal. And the yarn diet starts on Tuesday (I foolishly decided to take part in this "whole month without new yarn"-competition, the prize is, after all, yarn)...here's a nice dilemma then. I had planned to go to my LYS tomorrow, but the flu and its pals kind of recked that plan for me...so does it mean I have to live out the whole month with my existing stash?

Ja miksei kukaan ollut kertonut minulle että Colourwayllä on kaikenlaisia uusia ihania lankoja? Tuo RYC:n Cashcotton väri Magenta suorastaan huutaa minulle että "osta minua"! Kuukaudessahan ehtii tapahtua vaikka mitä, lampaat loppua maan päältä ja villan hinta nousta korkeammaksi kuin kullan! Järkyttävää! Nyt pitää kyllä mennä hiplaamaan äskettäin saapunutta Jaegerin Luxury Tweediä että verenpaine laskeutuu normaalille tasolle.

And why didn't anyone mention to me that Colourway has all kinds of lovely new yarns? That RYC Cashcotton Magenta practically screams at me to "buy me"! All kinds of terrible things can happen in a month, sheep may become extinct and the price of wool may rise way above gold! Shocking! Now I have to go and fondle my newly acquired Jaeger Luxury Tweed a bit so that my blood pressure will get down to normal levels.

Yöllisiä horinoita - Late night ramblings

Jeps, on yö ja normaalit ihmiset ovat nukkumassa. Tosin minä en ole ikinä väittänyt olevanikaan normaali, vai olenko? Flunssa on vihdoin hellittänyt ja nyt on tolkuttoman kuuma, hiki suorastaan. Ja nukkuminen ei nyt oikein innosta. Kissa kun vielä tulisi jalkopäähän lämmittämään niin siinähän suorastaan saisi lämpöhalvauksen.

Yesh, it's night and normal people are at sleep. Although I've never claimed to be a member of the normal people party, now have I? The flu has finally let go of me and now it's so hot, I'm sweating. And sleeping doesn't interest me now. The cat would come and warm my legs and all and I'd get myself a heat-stroke or something.

Sen sijaan näytillä on...joo, kyllä, lisää sukkia. Käytin näihin pikkusukkiin osan jäljellejääneestä Supersocka Sierra Effekt-langasta. Osan todellakin, koska tuntui että sukkiin ei kulunut mitään ja lankaa on vieläkin jäljellä. Onko kenelläkään hyviä ideoita mitä tehdä itseraidoittuvien sukkalankojen jätteistä? Näiden kuitenkin olisi tarkoitus sopia sellaiselle 6-kuukautiselle vauvalle. Tai no, eihän sillä väliä ole jos ne ovat liian isot, nehän kasvavat kuitenkin (jalat, ei siis sukat). Huomautan vielä, etten aikaisemmin ole moisia pikkusukkia tehnyt ja nämäkin on tehty "luodaan jokumäärä silmukoita ja neulotaan"-periaatteella. Mittakaavaa ei tarkoituksenmukaisesti ole, ettei kukaan pääse osoittelemaan sormella ja huomauttelemaan "noihan on ihan väärän kokoiset"-huomautuksia. Eihän tässä tyhmiä olla ;-)

Instead I'm presenting..yeah, more socks. I used some of my leftover Supersocke Sierra Effekt yarn on these little socks. I mean some because it felt like these socks were made of nothing because there's still some left. Anyone have any good ideas what to do with leftover self-striping sock yarns? These, however, are meant to fit a six-month old baby. Well, it doesn't matter if they're too big, though, does it, since they grow (feet, not socks). I'd just like to point out that these are the first tiny socks I've made and these were made with the good old "I just cast on a number of loops and knit"-method. There's no way to guess the size from the picture, no comparison, and that's deliberate...to avoid the "those are definitely the wrong size"-comments. I'm not stupid here ;-)

There's been some questions about wheter anyone actually reads the English translations, for example here and here. Well...I'm not thinking about leaving out my English ramblings, because I think there's someone reading them and besides, they're fun to make. But I would like some comments once in a while too...*hint,hint*.

Mutta mitä kuuluu Maxwellille? No, se on poistettu jo saunasta ja olen ommellut sivusaumat ja olkapäät ja hihan saumat. Mutta nyt kun olen vähän yrittänyt mallailla sitä ympärilleni, alkaa pahasti vaikuttamaan siltä että se on liian pitkä. Ja nyt pohdiskelen pitäisiköhän sitä vähän purkaa. Yritän laittaa siitä kuvaa jahka saan siitä selkoa ensin itsekin.

But what happened to Maxwell? Well, it's out of the sauna and I've sewn the side seams and shoulders and the sleeve seams. But now that I've had a chance to try it on it seems that it's quite on the long side. And now I'm wondering if I should rip it a bit. I'll try to post a photo once I get some sense out of it myself.

Lisää sukkia - More socks

Sain valmiiksi raitasukat äidilleni. Lankana on Fortissima Colorin Mexico-sukkalanka.

I finished the stripey socks for my mother. The yarn is Fortissima Colori's Mexico sock yarn.

Vaikka minulla ei enää olekaan varastossa itseraidoittuvia sukkalankoja, eivät ne kuitenkaan tähän loppuneet. Sillä jätteitä on vaikka kuinka paljon. Tuntuu vähän samalta kuin silloin kun syö kanankoipea: kaikki se vaiva ja kun lopettaa niin näyttää siltä kuin ei olisi edes aloittanutkaan. Mikään ei ole ainakaan vähentynyt. Jätteet ovat peräisin näistä , näistä ja näistä (unohtamatta tietenkään Mexico-sukkien jämiä).

Even though there's no more self-striping yarns at my stash, I'm not through with them yet. Because there's plenty of leftovers. It feels a bit like when you're eating a chicken leg: all that trouble and when you've finished it looks like you haven't even started. There seems to be nothing missing. The leftovers are from these, these and these (not to forget the Mexico-socks of course).

Ugh, ja minä luulin että oloni on paljon parempi tänään ja huomenna voisin mennä jo töihin, niin taisin olla optimistinen. Kuume nostaa taas päätään ja taidankin mennä katsomaan videota sohvalle kissan kanssa.

Ugh, and I though I was feeling much better today and that I could go to work today. But I was being too optimistic. The fever is on the rise again and I think I go lie down on the sofa and watch a video with the cat.
