Jotain punaista - Something Red

Sain vihdoinkin valmiiksi syksyn neulekonekurssilla ystävälleni Eijalle tekemäni neuletakin. Palasethan ovat olleet valmiina jo tovin, mutta tein reunuksen käsin ja se kesti. Simppeli malli tuo, etu- ja takakappaleet ihan suoraa pötköä, istutetuilla hihoilla tosin. Etukappaleet ovat leveät joten laskeutuvat kauniisti. Reunoja kiertää muutaman sentin ainaoikeinreunus.

I finally finished a machine knit cardi I made for my friend Eija at the class last autumn. The pieces I finished a while ago, but as usual the finishing took time. Very simple design, straight pieces but with set-in sleeves. The front pieces are wide so they drape nicely. There's hand-knitted garter stitch on all the edges and that is what took time.

Kätevää on myös se, että sitä voi pitää monella tapaa. Hieman rintaneulaa olkapäälle ja ulkonäkö muuttuu ihan erilaiseksi. Huomasimme myös että "toinen puoli kiinni olalta, toinen auki"-tyyli näyttää myös hyvältä mutta siitä ei valitettavasti tullut otettua kuvaa.

It's also handy that you can wear it with different ways. A bit of a brooch on the shoulder and la, it looks totally different. We also noticed that "one side pinned up, on side hanging down"- style looks nice also but unfortunately I don't have a photo of that.

Lanka on Marjutilta joskus neulekoneen hankkimisaikoina ostettua kartiolankaa. Se on Texeren lankaa, ehkä Fiestaa tai sitten ei - siis eihän kartioon toki kannata nimeä painaa, ei. Mutta villaa se on kuitenkin. Langassa vaihtelevat tiukkakierteiset ja todella löyhäkierteiset osiot joten pinnasta tuli elävä mutta lanka soljui kuitenkin koneella mukavasti.

Lankaa kului kuitenkin ihan kivasti, minulla oli sitä neljä n. 230 g kartiota ja jäljellä on noin 75 grammaa. Kun oletamme että kartio painaa noin 40 g (eihän minulla ole tietenkään niitä enää jäljellä punnittavaksi) saamme takin painoksi noin 685 grammaa.

Yarn is from Marjut, bought around when I got my machine. It is from Texere yarns, maybe Fiesta, maybe not - wouldn't do to put proper labels on the cones, oh no. But it is 100% wool in any case. The yarn is quite variable, there's tightly spun sections and very loosely spun sections resulting in a very nice-looking texture and still the yarn was easy to knit with the machine.

The cardi used up most of my yarn, which was nice. I had four cones of about 230 g each and now I'm left with about 75 grams of yarn. If we assume that the cardboard cone weighs about 40 grams (of course I don't have them anymore to weigh) we end up with the cardi weighin about 685 grams.

Tylsyyden huipentuma - The Pinnacle of Boredom

Surautin maanantaina koneneulontakurssilla taas sellaisen, tylsän, yksinkertaisen jokaneulanribbihuivin. Tällä kertaa vieläpä tumman harmaan. Voiko mikään olla tylsempää?

On Monday at the machine knitting class I knit a boring, simple every needle rib scarf. And this time in dark grey. Could anything possibly be more boring?

Koska käyttämäni lanka oli samanpaksuista kuin se mitä käytin aiemmin tekemääni huiviin, ryhdyin tietysti tekemään tätä uuttakin samoilla asetuksilla. Mutta, koska lankojen koostumus oli eri, ei tummanharmaa lanka neuloutunutkaan kunnolla vaan mokoma katkeili. Päätin sitten vaihtaa alatason silmukanleveyssäätimen tiukemmasta löysempään niin johan neuloutui.

Uteliaana sitten vertailin valmiita neuleita ja samoilla silmukkamäärillä harmaasta huivista tuli tämän verran leveämpi. Pituutta on myös jonkinverran enemmän. Lila on luonteeltaan enemmän hieman jämäkähkö kursailematon takinalushuivi, kun taas tummanharmaa pikkuserkku on rennompi ja hieman shaalimaisempi. Aika iso vaikutus pienellä vivulla, sanoisin.

Because the yarn I used was of the same weight as the purple one I used earlier I of course chose the same settings on the machine and started knitting. But the fibre composition was not the same and that is where the troubles began. For the dark grey yarn was not as strong as the purple and it did not want to be knitted. Instead it broke frequently. So I decided to push the stitch tightness lever from tighter to looser. After that the thing knitted up nicely.

Curious me compared the two completed scarves and found out that the dark grey one was quite a bit wider than the purple one, as can be seen from the picture. It is also somewhat longer. The purple is more of a sturdy, no-nonsense wear under coat -style scarf and the dark grey is more shawl-like, more relaxed and with more drape. Quite an impact on a small lever, I'd say.

Lörppäkauluspusero - Cowlish sweater

Olen tässä koneneuloskellut lisää. Itse neulonta oli aika nopeaa, suunnittelu ja lankojen päättely taisi viedä eniten aikaa. Kuvien laatu ei päätä huimaa, kun toimin itse omana valokuvaajanani, mutta kyllä näistä saa idean.

Ostin joskus vuonna 2008 Colourmartin ebay-kaupasta 300 g satsin ohutta puuvilla-kashmiria. En enää muista mitä paksuutta tai pitoisuutta se oli, koska kyseessä oli ns. odds'n ends-satsi, eli kartiotonta kartiolankaa joka piti sitten itse keriä. Satsissa oli eniten mustaa ja petroolia, saman verran suunnilleen molempia ja lisäksi vielä hieman vaaleanvihertävää ja beessiä. Päätin jättää nuo pari viimeistä väriä käyttämättä ja tehdä puseron kahdesta ensimmäisestä. Tällainen siitä sitten tuli.

I've machine knitted some more. The knitting itself went fast and smooth, design and weaving in ends was what took most of the time. The quality of the photos is not that great, I was trying to be my own photographer and that never seems to go well. But you get the idea.

I bought sometime in 2008 a lot of thin cashmere cotton from Colourmart's ebay store. I have no idea about the thickness, yardage or percentages for it was an odd's and ends off the cone-lot. Meaning there wasn't any information with the yarn and I had to wind it myself. There were four colours, black and petrol most, about the same amount both and also a bit of green and beige. I decided to skip the last two and make a sweater out of the first two. This is what I came up with.

Yritin tehdä sellaista lörppäkauluspuseroa, mutta olisin voinut ottaa lörpemmänkin kaula-aukon. Nyt se on sellainen hieman löysä. Levensin etuosan reunoissa kainalokavennusten jälkeen yhden silmukan molemmilla puolilla joka neljäs kerros. Näin jälkikäteen ajateltuna olisin voinut lisätä joka toinenkin kerros, mutta lankaa ei jäänyt liiemmälti yli nytkään. Mutta ihan pidettävä pusero tästä tuli. Tämä kun oli kuitenkin heman harjoitusprojekti seuraavalle, niin tiedän mitä voisin tehdä toisin.

Lankaa meni kokonaiset 200 g ja neuloin kolminkertaisesta langasta. Siitä saa jonkinlaisen käsityksen langan ohuudesta. Mitäs sitä muuta...hihoissa ja kauluksessa on pienet mustat käännösreunat. Niskan takaosassa tuo reunus hieman löpsöttää, joten ajattelin sinne pujottaa hieman kuminauhaa. Mietin ensin että tekisin jonkin koristeen beigellä tuohon johonkin olkapään tienoille mutta taidankin jättää sen tuollaiseksi, simppeliksi. Ylemmässä kuvassa on ehkä hieman oikeammat värit, mutta aika hyvin se sopii tuon hameen kanssa vaikka ei ihan samaa väriä olekaan.

I tried to make a cowl neck sweater, but I could have taken a bit looser with more fabric. Now it is just slightly loose. I added one stitch on both sides of the front piece after the arm hole decreases. In retrospect I could have gone every second row but I didn't have much left of the teal as it is. But I don't mind, I think it'll get plenty of wear even as it is. This was sort of a practice project for the one I had in mind after this.

The sweater weighs a whopping 200 g and I used the yarn tripled. It gives you some kind of idea how thin the yarn is. What else...there's thin black turned edges on both sleeves and the neck. The edge turns a bit outwards on the neck so I thought I'd put some elastic cord there to tighten it up. I first thought I'd make some kind of decoration using the beige yarn somewhere around the shoulder but I think I'll just leave it as it is. Simple and elegant. The colours are a bit more correct on the upper photo. I think it goes quite well with the skirt even though they're not completely the same shade.

Odds and ends

Olisin päivittänyt jo perjantaina mutta Blogger oli huoltokatkolla joten ei onnistunut. Viikonlopun vietin itä-Suomessa ja päivitys jäi sitten kotiinpaluun jälkeiseen aikaan. Käyhän se näinkin.

Neulerintamalla olen tehnyt vain tylsää tunikaa harmaanruskeasta langasta ja en ole jaksanut sitä kuvailla - ja eipä sellainen möntti kovinkaan kuvauksellinen edes ole. Mutta samalla olen hitaasti laskeskellut mallitilkun avulla neulepaidan kaavaa koneneulontaa varten. Kohteena kuvassa oleva lanka, Colourmartin 2/9NM fingering weight puuvilla/silkkiä jota ostin joskus ebaysta halvalla 300 g kartion (kuvassa oleva ei ole enää ihan täydessä koossa). Väri on nimeltään Celeste, sellainen aika haalea vaaleansininen.

I would have updated on Friday, but Blogger was out of order and then I spent the weekend in Eastern Finland. So, update was waiting to happen after I got home, which is now.

On knitting front things have been a bit boring lately. I've knitted a shirt out of browinish grey yarn, so a really boring and unphotogenic piece. Then I've knitted a part of sock or another and slowly calculated, with the help of a swatch, a sweater pattern. The yarn I wanted to use for the pattern is in the photo above, it's Colourmart's 2/9NM fingering weight silk/cotton which I bought in a 300 g cone from ebay a while back. The colour in question is called celeste, a bit wishy-washy sky-blue.

Viikolla otin itseäni niskasta kiinni ja tein laskelmat valmiiksi. Sitten hurautin osat parissa illassa koneella valmiiksi. Tässä etu- ja takaosa kiinitettyinä toisiinsa. Reunat teen käsin, koska palmikkojen kääntäminen koneella on hieman tylsää enkä jaksanut mallitilkustella joustinta. Tähän on hihatkin, ja niihin on jo tehty reunus, mutta en ole vielä kiinnittänyt niitä vartaloon.

Koneella on kyllä kätevä tehdä kappaleita sileästä neuleesta ja kartiolangat ovat mainioita kun niistä ei tule niitä pääteltäviä langanpätkiä niin paljon. Valmiina tämä neule pääsee vielä värikylpyyn jotta siitä tulisi enemmän minulle sopivamman värinen. Odottamassa oleva väri on Dylonin Bahama Blue.

During the week I finally decided to finish the pattern and start knitting. The machine performed nicely and I got the pieces finished in couple of evenings. Here's the front and back pieces sewn together. The edges I will knit by hand for cables from cotton with the machine are not so easy. And besides, I was too lazy to swatch rib. Oh, and I have sleeves too, and I've knitted the edges for those already.

The knitting machine is really handy for stockinette stitch pieces and cone yarns are perfect for then there's not so many ends to weave in. Once finished this knit will get a dye bath to become something that is more "me". The colour waiting is Dylon's Bahama Blue.

Pistelin myös ajankuluksi siimaan helminauhan. Tähän valittiin helmiä yhdessä ystävän 6-vuotiaan tytön kanssa, jolle helminauha piakkoin päätyykin. Kyseiseen helminauhaan vaadittiin kaksi yritystä, kun ensimmäistä päätellessä huomasin että puristushelmet eivät siiman kiinnittämiseen olekaan hyvä idea, sillä siima katkesi ja jouduin aloittamaan homman alusta. Toiseen versioon laitoin sitten vaan solmuja.

I also made long necklace using various beads and transparent fishing-line. The beads used I chose together with a friend's 6-year old daughter, who will be the recipient of this necklace. I had to bead the necklace twice for when I was trying to finish the first one I discovered that fishing line and crimp beads don't mix - I just ended up cutting the wire and had to start again. The next time I just used knots and they worked better.

Käytetyt helmet olivat hieman epämääräistä sakkia, mukana kahta eri sävyä sinistä ja yhtä lilaa lasirondellia, huurrettuja lasihelmiä, epämääräisen muotoisia siniharmaita ylijäämähelmiä, susirumia helmikolikkoja, epämääräisen muotoisia valkoisia helmiäisnuggetteja ja sinertäväksi värjättyjä simpukankuoria. Väleissä läpinäkyvä pieniä lasihelmiä. Yllättävän kiva lopputulos tästä sekasotkusta kuitenkin tuli ja sopiva kesäkoruksi.

Pituutta en ole mitannut mutta sen saa kätevästi kierrettyä kaulaan pari kertaa.

The pearls used were a bit of a mixed lot. There's two different blue and one lilac glass rondelles, frosted round glass beads, bluish-grey odd-shaped left-over pearls, irregular shaped mother-of-pearl nuggerts, very ugly pearl coins and bluish coloured smallish sea shells. And small transparent glass beads were used in between. The end result is surprisingly nice and will make a nice summer necklace.

I did not measure the necklace but it goes nicely twice around the neck.

Värikästä lauantaita - It's a colourful Saturday

Mies tuli maanantaina työmatkalta, oli kotona jo minun tullessa töistä. Jälleennäkeminen oli herkkä - menin vatsavaivoissani makaamaan ja vietinkin loppuillan sohvalla kääriytyneenä vilttiin ja välillä oksennellen. Vatsatauti siis iski.

Sain kivoja tuliaisiakin tosin niistä nauttiminen jäi loppuviikkoon. Amerikanmaalla kun tuo ystävänpäivä on ihan erilainen spektaakkeli niin sain pari kauniisti koristeltua suklaarasiaa. Godivaa ja jotain paikallisia herkkuja.

The hubby came home from a business trip on Monday, he was at home when I got home from work. The reunion was sweet and tender - I got off to bed with a queasy stomach and spent the rest of the night on the sofa wrapped up in a blanket leaving only to go the bathroom to empty my stomach. Yes, I caught a stomach bug.

I got some nice souvenirs too but it took me to the end of the week to be able to properly enjoy them. Since the valentine's day is more of a deal in the States than here, the shops were filled with heart-shaped thingies and such. I got two nicely decorated chocolate boxes, one filled with Godiva goodies, the other with local truffles.

Sain myös parit kunnon bling-kynsilakat, Deborah Lippmannia väreissä Across the Universe ja Today Was A Fairytale. Lankaa en tällä kertaa tilannut hotellille kun lumiolosuhteet arveluttivat. Eipä silti että se lanka täältä ihan heti loppuisikaan.

I also got a few bling nail polishes from Deborah Lippmann: Across the Universe and Today Was A Fairytale. This time I did not order any yarn to the hotel for I was not sure how the snow situation affected the post. Not that I'm out to run out of yarn in a near future.

Kun taudin pahin vaihe oli ohi mutta en ollut vielä täydessä terässä ei oikein tehnyt mieli neuloakaan. Sen sijaan viimeistelin hitaasti paria keskeneräistä neulekonevillatakkia. Toinen niistä on se omituisen värinen pikkutakki jonka esittelin aiemmassa postauksessa (tämä). Siinä on nyt molemmat hihat, nappilistan puolikas ja pääntien reunusta kiinni. Toinen on tämä epämääräisen oloinen loimi. Se ei näytä roikkumassa ollessaan kyllä paljon miltään ja kuvaaminenkin oli hieman hankalaa. Kyseessä on kuitenkin pitkä merino-tencel takki kolmessa värissä: vedensininen, mariini ja violetti. Se on jokaneulan ribbiä ja kiinnittelin siihen etukaitaletta ja hihoja. Hihapyöriöitä pitää luultavasti hieman purkaa, koska pyöriö pussittaa omituisesti olkapään kohdalta. Muuten tilanne näyttää ihan hyvältä sen suhteen että saisin sen päälle kohta. Polviin ulottuva lämmin neuletakki tällä ilmalla olisi ihan passeli. Ja toivottavasti saan parempia kuviakin aikaiseksi.

After I was over the worst phase of the stomach bug but not up to full capacity yet I did not feel much like knitting. Instead I seamed some pieces together of these two machine knit cardies I'm making. The one being the odd-coloured thing I showed in a previous post (this) which now has both sleeves, one half of a button band and part of neck band sewn on. The other one is this slinky thing I photographed hanging. It does not look much and it was really hard to photograph. It is every needle rib, in three colours of merino-tencel: aqua, navy and purple. It now has one sleeve attached to it too. I probably have to rip a part of the sleeve cap for it is a bit too long and makes a weird bump on the shoulder region. But I hope to get it finished soon so that I can wear it. Long, woolly cardigan sounds just the thing in this weather. And hopefully I get some better photos too.

Parisen vuotta sitten tilasin Kathryn Alexanderilta custom-värjäyksen Color on Color-huivia varten. En sitten heti päässyt huivin neulomisen kimppuun ja se sitten jäikin. Nyt kaivoin kaikki pikku lankakerät taas esiin ja pistin puikoille.

En nyt tiedä minkälaista se ohjeen alkuperäislanka on (Paternayan Persian), mutta minun lankani eivät ole sitä vaan jotain yksikierteistä ohuehkoa villalankaa. Yksinkertaisena en sillä saanut mitenkään haluttua tiheyttä (17 s ja 23 krs = 10x10 cm 3.75 millin puikoilla) joten päädyinkin neulomaan sitä kaksinkertaisena - tiedä sitten oliko se tarkoitus vai ei. Saan tästä 4 mm puikoilla nyt suunnilleen haluttua tiheyttä joten pysyn siinä. Koska tämä ei ole varsinainen kitti, ei lankoja siis ole mitenkään numeroitu saati sitten paritettu ohjeen kanssa. Pistelen värit siis haluamaani järjestykseen ja olen jo muutenkin hiukan soveltanut ohjetta. En nimittäin ymmärrä miksi siinä pitää olla niin paljon sileää nurjaa (reverse stockinette) ja korvaankin osan ainaoikealla. Lisäksi olen jo joutunut hieman soveltamaan raitojen leveyttä kun väri ei ole aina ihan riittänyt. Mutta, eipä tuo minua häiritse. Hauskaa tuo pienien vyyhtien kanssa puuhaaminen on vielä ainakin ollut. Tässä eilisillan saldo.

A couple of years ago I ordered a custom-dye from Kathryn Alexander from Color on Color scarf. I did not have the possibility to start knitting on it right away and then I somehow just didn't. But now I took out all the small skeins and started knitting.

I don't know what the original yarn is like (Paternayan Persian) but the yarn I have is single-ply thin wool. I had no chance of getting the gauge (17 sts, 23 rows = 10 cm on 3.75 mm needles) with it single so I'm using it double and with 4 mm needles. That brings me about gauge and the resulting fabric is not too loose so I'm sticking to it. And since this is not actually a kit, the yarns are in no way numbered nor are they attached to the pattern in any way. So I am choosing the colours as I knit and how I see fit. I've also already modified the pattern for I do not see the point of that much reverse stockinette and I'm replacing part of it with garter stitch. But that is just how I am and I'm not too bothered by it. So far it has been quite fun knitting with the small skeins and choosing the colour combinations. This is what I made in couple of hours last night.

Viimeinen ja ensimmäinen - Last and first

Vuoden viimeinen neuletyö valmistui juuri uudenvuoden aattona. Kyseessä on jo hieman, no, hyvin kypsynyt neuletyö, kietaisutakki Rosemoor, jonka sain lähes valmiiksi jo vuonna 2008. Tein vartalo-osan koneella (paitsi hihansuiden palmikonkierrot) ja nikuttelin sitten reunan palmikkokaitaleen käsin. Senkin sain tehtyä jo keväällä 2009 ja uupumaan jäi enää lankojen päättelyt ja kietaisunauhat. Lankahan oli tässä vaiheessa jo loppu, mallitilkutkin käytetty ja lisää ei enää saanut - sen siitä saa kun tykkää haalia lopetettuja lankoja varastoon. Sovituksessa ilmeni kuitenkin että olin ommellut palmikkokaitaleen liian löysästi takin toiseen puoleen eikä purkaminen innostanut. Viime viikolla otin kuitenkin sakset käteen, ratkoin ja ompelin kaitaleen paremmin paikalleen.

The last knit of 2010 was finished on New Year's Eve. Though it is a well matured knit, wrap-around cardi Rosemoor, that I started and almost finished on the spring of 2008. I did most of the body part by hand (except the cables on the sleeves) and then I knit the cable detail on the edge by hand. Even that was finished on the spring of 2009 and what was missing was some weaving in of yarn ends and the ties. At this point I was all out of yarn, I had even used the swatches and all. No more yarn was to be had - that is what I get for liking discontinued yarns. When I was trying the cardi on I noticed I had sewn the cable insert on too loosely on the other side of the neck and I did not feel like re-doing it. Finally, last week I got it done.

Kaitaletta oli sen verran liikaa että siitä langasta sain tehtyä kaksi icord-nauhaa sitomisnauhoiksi etureunaan. Toinen vaihtoehto oli laittaa sametti- tai satiininauhaa kietaisunauhoiksi, mutta kokeilen nyt tätä ensin.

I knit so much extra that with the yarn I ripped from the cable stripe I was able to make two icords for ties. I had thought to use velvet or satin cord as ties but I'll try these first.

Vastapuolelle laitoin sitten ohutta samettinauhaa. Jos tämä ratkaisu ei tunnu hyvältä, laitan sitten pidemmät, ympärille riittävät nauhat jostakin muusta. Mutta nyt on ainakin vuosikertaneule valmis, vihdoinkin. Lanka tuntuu kasteluista huolimatta hieman karkealle ja hieman mietittää miten kaula tuota kestää. Lanka on siis Jaegerin Luxury Tweediä, 35 % alpakkaa ja loput villaa. Väri on Imperial, jossa on lila ja tummansininen säie yhdessä. Tähän meni kaikki 10 kerää mitä minulla tuota väriä oli.

On the opposite side I put thin velvet ties. If I don't like this solution I'll change the ties for something longer that I can wrap around me, velvet or satin most likely. But at least I've finished one of my ufo's, finally. The yarn softened quite a bit after I blocked it but it still feels somewhat scratchy and I'm wondering how my sensitive neck will deal with it. The yarn is Jaeger Luxury Tweed that is 35% alpaca and 65% wool - the colour I used is called Imperial, lilac and really dark blue together. I used 10 skeins on this one, all that I had.

Vuoden ensimmäinen valmistunut neule valmistui sitten 1.1. Se ei sentään ollut niin marinoitunut, vaikka viime vuoden puolella aloitinkin sen. Taas tylsä huivi jokaneulan ribbiä. Colourmartin ohutta merinosilkkiä, ( 30/70% 2/48 nm), kaksinkertaisena, värin nimi on nancino magenta. Väri on ennemminkin kirsikka kuin magenta, mielestäni ja jotain näiden kahden kuvan väliltä.

The first knit of this year I finished on 1st of January. It's not that well matured as the cardi, I started this last year. Yet another boring machine knit every needle rib scarf. The yarn is thin, 2/48, merino-silk (70/30) from Colourmart, doubled. The colour is called nancino magenta but I think it is more cherry than magenta. The real colour is something between the two photos here.

Tein huivin siis omalla koneellani eikä siitä tullut ihan virheetöntä. Huomasin vasta jo neuloessa että yksi alatason neuloista oli hieman vääntynyt ja kaksinkertaisen langan kanssa oli jotenkin hankalaa ja toinen langoista jäi välillä neulalle lenkiksi. Onneksi pinnasta eivät virheet kovin helposti näy - kuvassa oleva raita on kuivumisjälki. Lanka pörhööntyi yllättävän vähän pesussa mutta aukeni kuitenkin hieman. Halusin kunnon huivin ja tälle kertyikin mittaa leveydessä hieman päälle 40 cm ja pituutta noin 220. Lankaa jäi kahdesta kartiosta hieman jäljelle mutta päätin olla neulomatta lankaa ihan loppuun, kun jäljelle jääneistä n. 30 grammasta olisi riittänyt kuitenkin yllättävän pitkälle. Nytkin huivin saa hyvin kiedottua pään ympärille ja päät ovat riittävän pitkät. Mietin että pitäisikö tätä koristella jotenkin, mutta yksinkertaisuus on kuitenkin kaunista.

I made this with my own machine and it did not turn out quite perfect. I only noticed after I had knit a bit that one of the needles on the lower bed was twisted and did not knit always nicely. Also I had some trouble with the doubled yarn and sometimes the other strand was left on the needle and got snagged. Luckily the knit is quite forgiving and the mistakes are hardly visible - the stripes seen on the photo are from where I hanged it to dry. The yarn didn't fluff up that much in the wash but the fabric softened somewhat. My aim was to make a big scarf and that is what I got. The length is about 220 cm and the width is a bit over 40. So big enough to wrap around the head and still leave enough over. I have some yarn left but I decided not to use it all up for the scarf is long enough as it is and 30 grams of thin yarn carries quite far. I wondered whether to decorate it somehow but I like the simplicity of it.

Jouluneulontaa - Christmas knitting

Pääkaupunkiseudulla on ihan naurettavasti lunta - yhtä paljon kuin Pohjois-Lapissa. Ja kylmäkin on, ainakin tänään kun odotin puoli tuntia bussia. Naurettavaa sekin, tuo typerä vuoro kun näyttää olevan myöhässä jos on liian kylmä, liian kuuma, liian paljon liikennettä, liian vähän liikennettä jne. Mutta puoli tuntia on sentään ennätys, tuollekin.

Mutta, kaikesta palelemisesta tulee mieleen villa ja villapaidat. Joita en siis neulo tällä hetkellä vaan teen jotain muuta mm. näistä väreistä. Wollmeisea sukkasekoitetta ja 100% merinoa on tässä, väreinä Küken, Türkis ja Wasabi.

We have quite a ridiculous amount of snow here in the capital region of Finland. As much as in Northern Lappland and that is much. And it is cold too, at least today it was when I was waiting half an hour for a stupid bus. Ridiculous was that too, since that particular bus seems to be late when it's too hot, or cold, or when there is too much traffic, or too little, or...well, you get the idea. But half an hour is a record, even for that.

All this snow and cold reminds me of wool and sweaters. Which I'm not knitting at the moment. Instead I'm making something using, among others, these colours. There's Wollmeise for you, in sock mix and merino. The colours I have here are Küken, Türkise and Wasabi.

Olen myös hitaasti kuluttanut kahta kartiota 2/48 nm -paksuista merino/silkkilankaa koneella. Hieman päälle 3500 metriä / kartio, ja kartio painaa 150 grammaa. Ohutta siis.

I've also slowly been knittin two cones of 2/48 nm merino-silk on the machine. A bit over 3500 meters / cone, 150 gram cones.

Tulossa on vähemmän täydellinen kaulaliina jokaneulan ribbiä. Vähemmän täydellinen siksi että oma kone ei näytä tekevän sitä yhtä kivuttomasti kuin kurssin kone. Eli outoja kohtia löytyy. Onneksi tuo jokaneulan ribbi antaa anteeksi jonkin verran, siitä kun ihan kaikki eivät niin helposti näy. Valmiina on noin 400 kerroksen verran ja todennäköisesti tarvitsen yli 1000. Nopeammin tulisi valmista jos jaksaisi jokapäivä vedellä tovin, mutta kun en ole.

What it's becoming is a not-so-perfect every needle rib scarf. And the reason it is not perfect is that my machine seems to be not so inclined to make every needle rib than the machine I'm using at the knitting class. Fortunately every needle rib doesn't show the mistakes that clearly and I'm hoping the washing fluffs the yarn up a bit too. I've managed to knit about 400 rows now and I fear I need all in all more than a thousand. I would have finished it already if I just knit some each day but I haven't done that.

Kotona olen siirtynyt toiseen käyttöjärjestelmään. Omppu löytyy nyt musiikkisoittimen lisäksi myös sylistä ja käytössä on MacBook Pro. Pidän erityisesti touchpadista ja sen monisormikäytöstä. Sen verran hyvin on tarttunut että yritän tehdä samoja temppuja työläppärilläkin jonka touchpad taas ei moista tue. Harmittavaa.

At home I've switched to another operating system. I now have apple on the music player and on my lap too and I'm usin a MacBook Pro. I particularly like the touchpad and its multi-touch functions. I've got so used to it that I even try to do the same thins on my work laptop which does not have such functionalities. What a shame.

Prinsessa Leia ja kumppanit - Princess Leia and companions

Viime aikoina on ollut hieman liian lämmintä neulomiseen ja muutenkin olen tahkonnut vain tylsää huivia, joten koruja on tullut väännettyä. Ostin viime syksyn kädentaito-messuilta kolme pussia isohkoja neliönmuotoisia foliolasihelmiä kahta väriä, koska ne olivat niin kauniita ja kolme pussia siksi kun sen sai kahden hinnalla. Olen niitä pyöritellyt ja mietiskellyt ja nyt ne vihdoin päätyivät koruiksi.

It has been a bit too hot to knit lately and anyhow all I've been knitting is this scarf that is quite boring and seems to take forever to finish (mainly it has been a knit-meet knit). So, I've made some jewellery instead. Last autumn I bought these large glass foil squares. I bought three bags because I they were pretty and I got them for the price of two. I've been mulling over what to make of them and finally I used them.

Välillä on kiva käyttää näyttäviä koruja, mutta silti pidän niistä yksinkertaisina. Paloja pyöritellessäni mieleeni tuli heti Planetaariset laaksot, kaulakoru joka oli prinsessa Leian kaulassa Tähtiensota IV-elokuvassa, ja kaulakoru muotoutui siltä pohjalta.

Kaulakoru on tehty paksumpaan koruvaijeriin ja palojen välissä on 5 mm kokoiset uurteiset tummahkot hopeapallot. Rannekorun pistelin taas kuminauhaan jonka suljin krimppihelmellä. Helmi sujahti näppärästi piiloon lasineliön sisälle, joten liitoskohta jäi kätevästi näkymättömiin.

Sometimes it is nice to wear big jewellery, but I like it to be simple. When I played around with the pieces I was instantly reminded of the necklace, Planetoid Valleys, that princess Leia was wearing on the Star Wars IV-movie. That is why I made this simple but massive necklace.

The necklace is strung on a medium beading wire with 5 mm corrugated sterling silver beads in between. The bracelet is strung on a clear stretch magic cord and closed with a crimp bead. The crimp bead was just the right size to slide into a square so the join is not visible at all when worn.

Tarjouduin tekemään äidille kaulakorun ja kyselin väritoiveita. Sieltä tuli sitten: mustaa, lilaa, jotain semmoista. No, tässä nyt on mustaa, lilaa ja jotain semmoista.

I offered to make a necklace for my Mom and I asked what colours she would like, and she answered: black, lilac, and such. Here's black, lilac and such then.

Korusta löytyy siis Swarovskin bicone-kristalleja väreissä amethyst, jet, black diamond ja fuchsia, koossa 8 ja 4 mm. Kristallit on pujotettu vaijeriin, mukana myös 2 mm hopeahelmiä ja mustia lasisia putkihelmiä. Kiva yksityiskohta on mielestäni se, että nuo lasiset putkihelmet ovat peräisin äitini mekosta, jota hän piti joskus nuorena.

There's some Swarovski bicones in jet, amethyst, fuchsia and black diamond, in 8 and 4 mm. Then there's also some 2 mm sterling silver beads and black glass tube pearls. The tube pearls came from a dress my Mom wore when she was young.

Lopuksi vielä kuva valmiista tyynynpäällisistä. Nämähän vetelin viimetöikseni äidille kevään neulekonekurssilla. Tuskaa oli, mutta valmiina ovat nätit kuin sika pienenä. Etummaisen nappeina ovat äidin tekemät poronsarvinapit.

To finish I present you with finished pillow covers. I made these on the last knitting machine class of the spring. They were a pain to make but are really pretty now that they are done. The one in the front has some reindeer-bone buttons that my Mom made.

Lisää vihreää - More green

Mietiskelin taannoin että mitä tekisin viimeisillä neulekonekurssin kerroilla ja koska en uskonut enää saavani valmiiksi kokonaista neulepaitaa, päätin ottaa työn alle pellavaa. Ostin syksyllä 2008 messuilta kaksi kartiota Lappajärven värjäämön pellavalankaa. Tarkoitus oli tehdä siitä neuletakki, mutta koska mallitilkku oli aika kovaa eikä tuntunut yhdestä pesusta paljon pehmenevän, se jäi varastoon lojumaan. Jokin aika sitten tein koneella samasta langasta kaksi koristetyynynpäällistä äidilleni (niistä tuli aika sievät). Päätin sitten tehdä myös vihreästä tyynynpäälliset samaan osoitteeseen. Malli tällä kertaa sileä, keskelle napit koristeeksi ja tyynyn postoa ja laittoa varten.

Kahdesta kartiosta tuli kaksi tyynyliinaa ja lankaa jäi hieman yli, ei kuitenkaan tarpeeksi kolmatta varten. Täytyy kyllä sanoa, että vaikka lanka oli samaa paksuutta kuin aiemmin, väri vain oli ero, niin lankojen neuloutuvuudessa oli runsaasti eroa. Nyt kelkan liikuttelu oli todella työtä ja melkoisen raskasta. Minun puolestani ko. firman pellavalangat saavat nyt jäädä tähän, tulipa kokeiltua. Jäljestä tulee kyllä siistiä, mutta enemmänkin kodintekstiileihin kuin vaatteisiin sopivaa. Miinusta vielä huonoista lankamerkinnöistä, mistään ei nimittäin saanut selville oliko lanka esikutistettua vai ei (ei ollut).

Viimeistelytyöt ovat vielä kesken, joten kuvaa valmiista tyynyistä myöhemmin.

A while ago I was pondering how to spend the few remaining machine knitting class sessions. I doubted I had time to make a new sweater or cardi, so I decided to get rid of some of my not-so-pleasant yarns. I bought this linen yarn from a fair back in -08 intending to make a cardi out of it. But since it was not really my colour and since the swatch I made didn't get much softer after washing I just laid it aside. But since I made two decorative pillow cases out of the same yarn to my Mom earlier, I decided to make some more for her.

The plan was to make two pieces, simple design, stockinette stitch with button band in the middle, both as a decorative item and for functionality. As I did. Two cones made two pillow cases with a bit left over, not enough for a third one however. The brown and orange yarn went smoothly through the machine and knitting was fine. The green one, however, was another matter. It was exactly the same thickness as the other yarns but didn't go at all smoothly. Moving the carriage was a real pain and not at all pleasant. I think my experiments with the linen yarns from this company have ended. Minus points also to unclear yarn labels. There was no way to know whether the yarn was pre-shrunk or not (it wasn't).

Finishing work is still on-going, so photos of finished items will appear later.

Ruusunoranssit silmälasit - Rose coloured glasses

Neulekonekurssi loppui tältä vuodelta tuossa joulukuun ensimmäisenä torstaina - siksi en myöskään ollut Helsingin neuletapaamisessa, toim. huom. Tampereen messuilta ostamani pellavalangat ovat nyt päätyneet tyynynpäällisten osiksi. Eivät vielä ole tyynynpäällisiä koska eivät ole vielä kasassa. Mietin että jos antaisin kasaustyön äidille, saisi sitten sopivan kokoiset päälliset tyynyihin. Tähtäsin 45 cm x 45 cm kokoon, mutta neuleen eläväisyydestä johtuen noista taisi tulla himpun verran leveämpiä.

Näitä ruusukuosisia paloja on kaksi ja toiseksi puoleksi tein ihan tummanruskeaa yksiväristä. Lievästä symmetriayliherkkyydestä kärsivänä tein tietenkin kuviollisista peilikuvia keskenään. Ruskeat käytin aika täysin loppuun (niitä oli kaksi kartiota), jouduinpa toista yksiväristä varten purkamaan yhden mallitilkunkin. Miksi on niin, että jos et ole oikein varma onko lankaa riittävästi niin se tietenkin loppuu noin viisi kerrosta ennen loppua? Oranssia on vielä sen verran, että ajattelin tehdä siitä i-cordia jolla voi ympäröidä valmiin tyynyn. Tosin, kun en kerran ole varma onko sitä tarpeeksi niin todennäköisesti sekin sitten loppuu viitisen senttiä tarvittavaa määrää ennen.

The machine knitting class is over for this year, the last time was on the first Thursday of November. I bought some linen yarns at the Tampere fair for a particular purpose, for some decorative pillow cases for my Mother. And those I turned into these parts. I thought I'd let my mom worry about the putting together part, since that way she can be sure about the fit. I aimed for 45 cm x 45 cm pieces, but since this material is a bit difficult I think they are a bit more wide than needed.

I made two of these rose-patterned pieces and two plain brown ones to use as back sides. And since I suffer from a mild case of symmetrophobia I of course made the two patterned pieces as mirror images. I managed to use all of the brown linen (I had two cones), so precisely that I had to rip a swatch to finish the second plain piece. Why is it so that if you're not sure whether you have enough yarn it surely runs out about five rows earlier than needed? I have still some orange left and I thought I'd do some i-cord to put on around the cases. Though as I'm not sure whether I have enough of that it will surely run out so that I have about five centimeters less of the cord than I need.

Langasta hieman, kyseessä on siis Lappajärven värjäämön Filona pellavalanka, se paksumpi. Vaikka törmäsinkin aiemmilla messuilla siitä tehtyihin asusteisiin, en itse siitä kyllä vaatetta tai huivia tekisi, sillä se on aikaa kovaa, vaikka hieman pehmeneekin pesussa. Minulla kun ei riitä kärsivällisyyttä odotella käytön pehmentävän vaatteen miellyttäväksi. Mutta, tekstiileissä sopivaa ryhtiä siitä löytyy kyllä. Onneksi neulekonekurssi on opettanut minut sen verran pedantiksi, että teen nykyisin kunnon mallitilkut ja pesen ne. Ja yleensä muistan jopa mitata tiheydet ennen ja jälkeen pesua. Tässä tapauksessa en muista teinkö niin ennen, joten yllätys olikin aika suuri kun valmis kappale kutistui pesussa aika huomattavasti. Eroa tässä on noin viiden sentin luokkaa, leveydessä, pystysuuntaan kutistumista ei sanottavammin tapahtunut. Olisin kaivannut kyllä lankaan merkintää siitä onko pellava kutistettua vai ei. Tässä tapauksessa se ei sitä selvästikään ollut.

A bit about the yarn, it's from Lappajärven värjäämö, Filona linen yarn, the thicker one. Although on an earlier fair I came across some scarves and stuff knit from this yarn, I would not use it for clothes for it is way too coarse for me. It does soften a bit with washing, but I do not have the patience to wait that clothes soften with use. But, it is good to use with other textiles. Luckily the machine knit class has taught me to be suitably pedantic so these days I knit big enough swatches and wash them before knitting, usually I remember to take both before and after wash measurements. I'm not sure if I took the before-numbers in this case, but I was quite surprised when I washed the finished piece and compared it to an unwashed one. For there was considerable shrinkage, in width about 5 cm, in length not so much. I would have preferred that they mentioned in the label whether the yarn was pre-shrunk or not, for not everyone shares my pedantic tendencies.

Neulerintamalla on hieman hljaista muuten, koska olen tehnyt joululahjaneuleita. Sainkin yhden valmiiksi, mutta, no, ei sitä nyt tässä voi esitellä. It's a bit quiet on the knit front for I've been doing some xmas knitting. Yes, I've finished it but, well, I'm not going to show it here now. Instead, I'll show you my Baktus that I've been knitting for ages. It has progressed past its half-point finally so I might get to wear it this winter. And yes, I've continued the yarn in the middle of the scarf. Will I get cement boots and a trip to the lake or maybe a good whipping?

Kiertoharjoituksia - Excercises in twisting

Kun isommat neuleet ei nyt oikein onnistu, neulotaan sitten pieniä (paitsi Hilja on kohta taas kunnossa). Ensimmäisenä piponen, jolla ei vielä ole nimeä. Tämä meni lahjaksi 2-vuotiaalle ja samalla ohjeella olisi tarkoitus tehdä pipa myös pienemmälle. Ohje ehkä tulevaan Ullaan.

When I don't have much luck with bigger knits at the moment I decided to move into smaller ones. Here's a summer hat that does not yet have a name. This was a present for a 2-year old and I'm planning on making a smaller one too. The pattern will probably be in the next Ulla.

Then I've experimented with short rows. I'm not planning on making a corkscrew scarf (there's plenty of those), just something that would wrap easily around the neck.

Lupasin tehdä äidille pellavalangasta tyynynpäällisiä ja koska hukkasin edellisen mallitilkun muistiinpanot (ylläri) niin piti tehdä uusi. No, siinä sitten vetelin tiheyskokeiluja koneella ja kelkka jumiutui langanpätkään ja sitä piti selvitellä. Irrotin kelkan koneesta ja poistin langan ja sisältä kuului kilinää. Kääntelin kelkkaa ja sieltä putkahti ulos tällainen. Ja ei, minulla ei ole minkäänlaista ideaa siitä mikä tuo on ja mistä se irtosi ja onko se jotenkin oleellinen osa vai ei. En nähnyt äkkiseltään mitään paikkaa mihin moisen voisi survoa enkä halunnut ruveta ruuvailemaan kelkkaa palasiksi joten jatkoin vain neulomista. Hyvin se näytti sujuvan, ilman tuotakin. Mutta eikö sitä koneita rassaillessa yleensä jää jotain osia yli?

I promised to make my Mom some pillow covers with linen yarn and since I lost the notes on the last swatch (what a surprise) I had to make a new one. As I did the tension swatches on the machine a piece of yarn got caught in the carriage and it jammed. After I removed the carriage from the machine and the offending yarn from the carriage I was planning on putting it back on the machine when I heard strange noises coming inside the carriage. And after some gentle shaking this popped out. No, I have no idea what it is and if it is essential or not. I did not see any place in the carriage that looked like it was missing a piece and I did not feel like ripping the carriage apart so I just went on knitting. The machine seemed to perform quite well even after the piece fell out. So we'll see. But don't you have extra parts after fiddling with machinery usually?

Yksinkertaisuus on kaunista - Simple is beautiful

Ehdin viimeisellä neulekonekurssikerralla tehdä boleron palasten lisäksi huivin. Pidän yksinkertaisista, selkeälinjaisista vaatteista joissa on kuitenkin joku juju. Tästä puuttuu vielä se juju, mutta muuten se on kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessaan kaunis.

On the last machine knitting class I managed to finish the bolero pieces and make a scarf. I like simple clothes that have smooth, clear lines and a bit of something. The scarf is still missing that something but is still quite beautiful in all its simplicity.

Käytin huiviin kartion Colourmartin merino/viskoosi/kashmiria (55/35/10) väriä Aubergine joka on lojunut varastossa vuoden 2006 lopusta asti. Painoa kartiolla oli 150 g ja metrejä noin 2100. Vetelin langan ihan yksinkertaisella jokaneulan 1x1-ribillä. Se syö enemmän lankaa mutta neulepinta pysyy kauniisti auki eikä vedä kasaan kuten normijoustimella.

For the scarf I used a cone of Colourmart's merino/viscose/kashmir (55/35/10) in colourway Aubergine, that had been sitting in the stash since late -06. The cone weighed 150 grams and had about 2100 meters. I knit the yarn quite simply using every needle rib at 1x1. It eats more yarn but the resulting knit stays open unlike normal rib.

Olin todella epäileväinen langan riittoisuuden suhteen. Kyllä, tiesin että se on ohutta mutta silti 150 g tuntuu kovin vähältä enkä halunnut mitään nysää. Mutta neulottaessa lankaa riitti ja riitti (vaikka neuloinkin vainoharhaisena kartio vaa'alla) ja tuloksena oli n. 28 cm leveä ja 190 cm pitkä huivi. Se kaipaa vielä kunnon pesua koska lanka on öljyttyä. Teen reunoihin jonkinlaiset pampulaviritykset koska olen huomannut että reunapaino auttaa huivia pysymään paremmin paikallaan.

I was really sceptical about how much I could get out of the yarn. Yes, I know it was thin but still, 150 grams is not that much and I did not want to end up with something that was almost but not quite long enough. But as I got knitting the yarn just went on and on (my scepticism caused me to knit with the cone on scales) and I ended up with this: 28 cm wide and about 190 cm long scarf. It still needs a good wash to remove the oil from the yarn and that little something. I think I'll add some kind of pompoms to the edges for I've noticed it helps the scarf stay better in place.

Kaikki ei aina onnistu - Things do not always succeed

En ole hirveästi laitellut tänne kuvia neulekonekurssin tekosista keskeneräisinä. Yksi syy on se, etten useinkaan muista ottaa kameraa mukaan kurssille, saati sitten ehdi ottaa kuvia siellä, mutta toinen syy on se että ne ovat mielestäni tylsiä. Koneesta roikkuva neuletyö ei ole mitenkään kuvauksellinen ja ennen höyrytystä palat ovat vielä niin kippurassa ettei niistä saa mitään selvääkään.

I have not much shown you photos of what I've been up to at the machine knit class. One reason is that I seldom remember to take a camera with me to the class, nor would I have time for the photos anyway. And another reason is that I think they are very boring. A knit hanging from a machine is not very photogenic and before a good steaming the pieces are so curly there's not much to see.

Mutta tässä on kertomus siitä miten kaikki ei aina suju vaikka kuinka yrittäisi. Sain idean jo syksyllä, vahingossa, kun kokeilin mielenkiintoisen näköistä mallineuletta enkä sitten lukenut ohjeita tarkkaan. Päädyin kuitenkin käyttämään silkkivillan sijaan muinoin ystävämyynnistä hamstraamaani Viking-lankaa. Tein mallitilkkuja innokkaasti ja vaikka Vikingistä ei tullutkaan yhtä sievän näköistä kuin silkkivillasta niin tuli siitäkin kaunista ja onhan varastolankojen käyttö aina suotavaa. Suunnittelin ja piirsin kaavoja. Siitä tulisi neulepaita jonka yläosa olisi mallineuletta hieman rintojen alle ja siitä alaspäin sileää pudotetuilla silmukoilla. Mallitilkun mukaan rullautuvuus olisi hallittavissa höyrytyksen avulla ja eikun töihin. Valmiissa kappaleessa sileän osuus oli kuitenkin niin suurta että se rullautui vaikka sitä olisi höyryttänyt kuinka ja suorassa pysymiseen olisi tarvittu kunnon painoja. Siispä purkuun ja idea B käyttöön. Tekisinkin alaosan joustimena. Ja eikun taas mallitilkkua ja hyvältä näyttää. Taas takaosan kimppuun. Näyttää hyvältä siihen asti kunnes pudotettuja silmukoita pitää hieman avittaa. Ja sitten tapahtuu näin - pudotetun viereinen silmukka leviää paikoin aika reilusti. Puhumattakaan siitä että hiha-aukon kohdalla on tapahtunut jotain outoa. Havaitsin saman ilmiön jo ensimmäisessä kappaleessa mutta ajattelin sen johtuvan vain siitä että unohdin neuloa jokusen kerroksen mutta tällä kertaa olin tarkkana ja hiha-aukko on siltikin liian lyhyt. Luultavasti mallineule vetää kasaan isommassa pinnassa eri tavalla kuin mitä mallitilkun perusteella näytti. Viisas luovutti tässä vaiheessa ja miettii Viking-langalle muuta käyttöä. Joustinneule näyttää siinä todella hyvältä, ehkä siitä voisi saada yksinkertaisen joustinneuletakin. Mutta ei todellakaan nyt heti.

But here's a story of how things don't always turn out fine no matter how well you plan ahead. I had the idea last autumn by mistake when I was trying a nice-looking pattern and neglected to read the instructions properly. I got a nice swatch with a slightly lace-like bottom with dropped stitches. But instead of silk wool I decided to use this Viking yarn I had in my stash. I did some swatches and even though the Viking did not behave as nicely as the silk wool it was still quite pretty and it is always good to use what's in ones stash. So I planned and made the pattern. It was to become a sweater with the pattern on top and below the breasts it would be stockinette with dropped stitches so it would widen a bit. For even though it would be stockinette it seemed that the curling would be manageable with proper steaming. So I did the back piece. And I was wrong about the curling. For in the finished piece there was so much stockinette that no matter how much I steamed it still curled and would have required weights on the edge to keep it straight. So I ripped it and changed to option B. Which was to have ribbing on the bottom. Swatches again and the dropped stitches looked even better with ribbing. And I did another back piece. Things looked well until the point where I had to help the dropping stitches by hand. The above happened: the stitches next to the ones being dropped came loose and looked horrible. Not to mention what had happened on the sleeve opening. For I noticed on the first piece that they looked somewhat short but I thought I had just neglected to knit some rows for there had been distractions at the time. But no, this time I was sure I had knit all that my pattern said. So either the stitch pattern behaved differently in a larger piece than it had done in my swatch or I had made an error while making the pattern. No matter, a wise person knows when to quit and this was the time. I'll have to think of some other use for the yarn, ribbing comes out beautifully crisp in it so maybe a simple ribbed cardi. But not this spring, thank you very much.

Siirryin seuraavaan ideaani. Näistä pitkistä suikaleista pitäisi tulla huivi. Tässä on keväänvihreää, tummaa ruskeata ja yksi musta. Lankana ohut Titan Woolin merino. Mustia piti tulla enemmän mutta menetin hermoni täysin kun toista suikaletta tehdessä lanka katkesi ainakin kolmesti ja silmukoita tippui. Jos olet ikinä nostellut silmukoita ohuesta langasta tehdystä neuleesta niin tiedät mitä tarkoitan. Musta käyttäytyi todella poikkeavasti neulottaessa mutta kuulemma sitä tehdään usein värjäämällä päälle, joten se voi siksikin olla heikompaa. Tähän tarvitsee kyllä vielä jonkin kolmannen värin, tarjolla olisi vaaleaa lilaa tai tummempaa punalilaa.

So I moved on to my next ideas. These long stockinette stitch pieces are supposed to become a scarf. Here I have springy green, very dark brown and one black piece. I used thin Titan Wool merino. I was planning on knitting more blacks but I totally lost my patience when while I was knitting the second black the yarn snapped about three times. And if you've ever had to pick up stitches from a piece knit with a very thin yarn you know what I mean. So, no more black. The black yarn behaved quite differently from the other colours. It wasn't nearly as strong. I don't think that would have been a problem with hand knitting but it sure was with machine knitting. I heard that they make black by overdying so it might be not as strong because of it. But, I will need a third colour. The choises are between pale violet and darker reddish purple.

Kolmisen viikkoa sitten perjantaina olo oli aika väsy ja nuutunut ja ajattelin pullollisen cokista piristävän. Eikun automaatille pullon hakuun. Hieman potutti kun mokoma ei antanutkaan kylmää limupulloa vaan pölli rahat. Soitto laitteen kyljessä olevaan numeroon ja lupasivat laittaa korvaavan tuotteen postitse. No, sen hetken cokishimoon lupaus ei tuonut apua ja ensiharmituksen jälkeen hieman unohdinkin koko asian. Mitään ei sitten kuulunut ja ajattelin heidänkin unohtaneen. Kunnes viime viikolla tuli pakettikortti. Postista löytyi sievä paketti. Hieman naureskelin kuljettaessani sitä kotiin.

About three weeks ago on a Friday afternoon at work I was feeling quite tired and thought that a bottle of coke would wake me up a bit. So I went to the nearest wending machine and was more than a little miffed when the darned thing refused to give out the goods but kept my money. I called the number listed on the device and they promised to send me a replacement by mail. Which was all good and well but didn't really do anything about my lust for cool refreshment at the moment. So I forgot about it a bit and since nothing came by post I thought they'd forgot about it too until I got a note from the post office saying that they had a package for me. So I went to pick it up and got this. I was mildly amused when I brought it home.

Sisältä löytyi pullon sijasta kaksi, mikä oli ihan mukavaa. Ensi kerralla: uutta huivia ja sukat.

Inside I found two bottles instead of one which was very nice. Next time: new scarf and a pair of socks.

Edistystä - Some progress

Kulunut viikko oli taas kamala. Uuteen tiimiin siirtyminen on teettänyt töitä ihan eri tavalla, on kaikenlaista kyselemistä ja selvitettävää ja tiedettävää. Viikkoa työllisti vielä mm. sertifikaattitestin hakemus, joka oli lievästi sanottuna työteliäs. Nyt vaan koetta odottamaan... Mutta se töistä.

Neulekonekurssi on taas alkanut ja olen saanut aikaan vasta mallitilkkuja ja ideoita pyörii päässä. Ne mustat Sivillat jotka ostin messuilta pääsevät neuleliiviksi, jahka kehitän ohjeen. Ajattelin ihan törkeästi käydä kaupassa kokeilemassa liivejä niin tiedän kuinka leveän siitä teen. Luulisi että siitä pitäisi tehdä enemmänkin pieni kuin iso, tarkoitus on tehdä sellainen napakka istuva malli.

Päällä köllöttelevä vihreä on pellavaa. Sen suhteen olen hieman pettynyt. Se on aika kovaa eikä pesukoneessa pyörittely aiheuttanut oikeastaan muuta kuin hieman kutistumista. Pitää vielä miettiä mitä moisesta voisi tehdä, mutta toisaalta luulisi että se käytössä pehmenee, eikö pellava tee niin?

This week has been horrid. I've moved on to a new team and there's tons of things I should know and it has resulted in running around and asking people stuff etc. This week I've also spent time with making the applicatin for the certificate test, which required quite a lot of work. Now it's just waiting for the exam... But enough about work.

The machine knitting class started again and so far I've only made swatches. My head is filling with ideas, we'll see how they turn out as the course progresses. The thin black yarn I bought at the fair will become a vest once I figure out the correct measurements. I think it'll have to be with fairly much negative ease for I want a smart, well-fitting one to wear with blouses. I think I'll just go to some shop with a measuring tape and try them on.

The green one on top is linen. I was a bit disappointed with it, since it came out quite hard and washing didn't do much difference, except that it just shrunk a bit. I think I'll put it aside for now. But shouldn't linen get softer with use?

Punainen on Wetterhoffin paksumpaa silkkivillaa, Sivillaa. Sitä on myös ilo neuloa koneella, ja idea jota kokeilin ohuemmalla langalla toimii tässä mainiosti. Yläpuolen mallikuvio on sellainen että siinä alussa otetaan tietty määrä silmukoita pois neuloksesta. Kun silmukat päästää vapaasti putoamaan alas tulee levenee sileä neule mielenkiinoitsesti. Kehittelen ideaa, tästä todennäköisesti tulee jonkinlainen neuletakki tai -pusero jossa alaosassa on tuota leveämpää neuletta. Nyt vaan pitäisi päättää se väri mitä tilaa.

The red one is Wetterhoff's thicker silk-wool yarn called Sivilla. It is also a pleasure to knit with a machine and I made a swatch similar I did with the thinner yarn. I found a pattern where you take some needles out of the work and if you just let these stitches drop all the way down it creates a nice flaring effect on a stockinette stitch. I'm thinking a cardi or a pullover with this tuck-pattern on the top and flaring on the bottom. Still have to decide what colour yarn to order.

Kelso on edennyt myös. Nyt minulla on kaksi hihaa. Vielä pitää hieman pohdiskella vartalo-osan pituutta ennenkuin voin yhdistää hihat siihen. Olen nyt tehnyt suunnilleen ohjeen verran pituutta siihen, mutta todennäköisesti teen saman kuin hihoille, eli pidennän niitä hieman. Mutta tästähän voisi tulla kohta vaikka valmista.

I've made progress with the Kelso cardigan. Now I have two sleeves to go with the almost-body. I have to think a bit on how long I want the body to be. So far I've knitted it as long as specified in the pattern, but I think I'll do as with the sleeves, make them a bit longer that is. But it is starting to look like it won't take too long to get a finished cardi.
