I still aten't dead - the story of the largest swatch

Kyllästyin tuossa joulun tienoilla blogaamiseen lähinnä siksi kun tuntui että neuloin vaan enkä saa mitään ikinä valmiiksi. Mitä siinä sitten blogaisi, kun ei ole enää kissaakaan mistä postailla hassuja kuvia. Siinä sitten tuli ihan huomaamatta taukoa. Mutta nyt kun luonto vihertää kivasti ja puut ovat jo hiirenkorvilla niin voisi herätellä blogiakin taas henkiin talviuneltaan.

I got a bit fed up with blogging around xmastime, mostly because I felt that I just knit and knit but never managed to finish anything. So what is there to blog now that I don't have a cat anymore and can't post cat photos. So I just sort of put the blog on hiatus. But now that the nature is getting green again and the trees have small light-green new leaves it is time to wake the blog up from it's hibernation.

Joten pidemmittä puheitta esittelen viimeisimmän valmistuneen työni. Lapsen liivi (noin 8 vuotiaan koko), 100% akryyliä, liukuvärjäystä ja blingiä. Aika erikoinen materiaali minulle, eikö? Tarina tälle on se, että sain aika massiivisen kerän testineulottavaksi Ullaa varten. 100 g lankaa ja metrejä noin 330. Mieleen tuli ajatus että mitähän tästä saisi, muutakin kuin siis sen pienen mallitilkun. Ja kun on sopivasti kuusi vuotta täyttänyt kummilapsi (kookas kuusivuotias) niin eiköhän sitä jotain siitä yhdestä kerästä saisi. Selailin hetken Ravelryä ja bongasin sieltä tällaisen taikaliivin. Yksi kerä riitti aika hyvin, joskin vaati pientä purkamista resoriosan alkupäästä, sillä teemanahan oli että yksi kerä kyllä riittää, uutta ei hankita.

So without further ado I present you my latest finished piece - a kid's vest (about 8 yo size), 100% acrylic, variegated and with bling. Not my usual material, is it? The story behind this is that I got this huge ball of yarn to test-knit for Ulla. 100 g and 330 meters, there had to be something I could make out of it, other than just a swatch that is. My god-daughter turned six just conveniently so I after a bit of Ravelry-searching I found a pattern for a child's vest. The kid in question is tall for a six-year old so I made almost the 8 yo size - almost for the back is not as long as in the pattern and I had to rip back a bit of the ribbing part in the beginning to make it to the end - the main idea here was to make do with one skein and not buy another.

Takaosassa on reikäkuviota (huomatkaa myös apurini karvaiset käsivarret). Tämä reikäkuvio-osio ei siis ole ihan yhtä pitkä kuin siinä kahdeksanvuotiaan koossa, mutta melkein. Valitettavasti en saanut kuvaa mallin päällä, kun malli ujosteli, joten joudutte tyytymään hengarikuviin.

The back has some mock-cable eyelet pattern (and do note the hairy arms of my fair assistant). This pattern part is not as long as it was for the 8 yo size for I had to make some adjustments to make do with one skein. Unfortunately I did not get any photos of the vest being worn for my model was being shy so you have to do with these "on hanger" photos.

Jouluaskartelua - Christmas Crafts

Tänään tein hieman jouluaskartelua. Otetaan kranssipohja, virkattuja pallukoita, metallilankaa...

 

Today was time for some christmas crafts. So, take one twig wreath, some crocheted balls, metal wire...

...bambuisia syömäpuikkoja, cocktailtikkuja, ompelulankaa, ohutta huivilankaa, vanua, koristenauhaa...

 

...bamboo chopsticks, cocktail sticks, sewing thread, lace yarn, filler, decorative ribbon...

 ...ja kah, siinähän se, uusi kranssi. Tässä on useamman vuoden tullut käyteltyä ihan sinänsä kivaa mutta jo tylsää kaupasta ostettua muovikranssia. Sain vihdoinkin aikaan hieman enemmän neulojatyylisen kranssin.

 ...and there you have it, a new wreath. We've had the same old (but quite nice) plastic store-bought wreath. And finally I managed to make something a bit more knitter-like to decorate our front door.

Kranssin keskelle tein lumiukkoasetelman. Pallukat on virkattu Schoeller+Stahlin Teddy-langasta ja täytetty vanulla. Silmät ja napit on ihan normaalia ompelulankaa, kädet ja luuta lankapäällystettyä metallilankaa. Huivit on neulottu käteen osuneista pitsilangoista. Ja koska epäilen oksakranssin kestävyyttä - se nimittäin varisi aika paljon jo kokoonpanon aikana - en liimannut koristeita paikalleen vaan pisimmät ukot on kiinnitetty kranssin läpi tungettuun värjättyyn bambusyömäpuikkoon ja kiinnittämisen apuna käytin vielä lankaa ja cocktailtikkuja. 

Ja jotta homma ei menisi ihan söpöilyksi, niin keskimmäinen lumiukko on hieman...erilainen, Calvin&Hobbes-tyyliin.

I made a bunch of snowmen to decorate the wreath. The snowmen are assembled from crocheted balls (the yarn used was Schoeller+Stahl Teddy) and filled with filler. Eyes and buttons are sewing thread, hands and broom are thread-covered metal wire. Scarves were knitted from some random lace yarn. And since I have doubts on how the twig wreath will wear (it shed quite a bit during assembly) I did not glue anything in place so that I can change the wreath if I have to. Instead I attached the two bigger snowmen to a dyed bamboo chopstick with thread and also anchored to place using cocktail sticks.

And to avoid being too cute, the middle snowman is a bit...diffrent, in the style of Calvin&Hobbes.

Riemuraitaa - Bold stripes

 
Teinpä sukat, Jaywalkerit, jo toisen kerran. Malli sopii hyvin itseraidoittuville langoille, tästäkin olisi tullut tylsää tasaraitaa.

 

Made some socks, Jaywalkers, the second pair I've made. I think this pattern suits self-striping yarns very well, for this would have been quite boring with its boring stripes.

Lanka oli Supersocken jotain, ostettu Karnaluksista elokuussa. Sukat menivät äidille ja hän valitsi itse langankin. En nyt voi väittää kauheasti tästä väriyhdistelmästä pitäväni mutta kyllä niistä nyt ihan kivat sukat tuli. Ja, koska tunnun olevan kykenemätön neulomaan täysin ohjeiden mukaan muita kuin pitsihuiveja, tuli näihinkin ohjeesta poiketen 1o1n-joustin varrensuuhun.

Jaywalker on ohjeena kyllä hiukan ongelmallinen,  sillä tuosta kantapään kohdasta tulee helposti liian kapea. Jouduinkin aloittamaan kerran uudestaan kun valitsin ensin pienimmän koon (äidillä on koon 38 jalka joka on aika kapea) ja siitä olisi tullut aivan liian kapea. Toiseksi pienin koko tuotti napakan mutta kuitenkin vielä jalkaan menevän sukan. Ehkä hieman pidempi kantalappu auttaisi tilannetta jos vielä kolmannet Jaywalkerit joskus teen.

 

The yarn I used was Supersocke something, bought at Karnaluks in Tallinn in August. The socks went to my Mom and she chose the yarn too. I can't say I'm too fond of this colour combination but the socks turned out quite nice after all. And, since I seem to be incapable of knitting anything else than lace scarves as is written these have 1x1 ribbing at the cuff.

Jaywalker as a pattern is a bit problematic, for the stitch pattern does not stretch much and the circumference around the heel can easily be too small. I had to start again for I had chosen the smallest size (my Mom has size 38 feet and they're quite slim) and it was too tight. The next size turned out much better even though they're still quite fitted. If I make a third pair at some point I think I might do longer heel flap so that I could get a bit more stitches to that point. For I quite like the slim ankles and would not want to add stitches there.

Ja lauantaina Tampereelle messuille! Bussikyydillä tällä kertaa, kun VR:n tarjous meni jotenkin ohi... Aikaa on siis rajatusti mutta toisaalta pääsee messuhallille perille asti.

And to Tampere next Saturday, there's the Finnish handicrafts fair. ! By bus this time because I missed the cheap train tickets... So, the time there is quite limited but at least we get straight to the exhibition center.

Karuselli - Carousel

Vietin viikonlopun Itä-Suomessa vanhempien luona, isänpäivä ja kummipojan syntymäpäivä ja sitä rataa. Sisältyi viikonloppuun hieman näpertelyäkin, kun äiti oli keksinyt sopivasti puuhaa.

Tehtävä: 11 eripuolilta maailmaa ostettua lasipalloa piti saada nätisti esille roikkumaan. 

Tästä lähdettiin, kyseessä on vanha Aarikan kynttelikkö.

 

I spent the weekend in Eastern Finland, Father's day and godson's birthday and so on. I managed to do some other crafts beside knitting for Mom had needs.

My mission (and I chose to accept it): arrange 11 glass balls in a pleasing arrangement. 

The above is where I started from, it was an old chandelier from Aarikka.

Tarvikkeina oli kullanväristä metalliketjua ja metallilankaa ja 10 lasipalloa - tai no, kaksi niistä oli oikeastaan lasisia lintuja. Mutta onttoja yhtäkaikki.

 

 

What I had to work with was some gold-coloured chain and metal wire and 10 glass balls - well, actually two of them were birds. But they were all hollow.

Tämmöistä siitä sitten rupesin vääntämään.

Ja tässä lopputulos, siitä tuli oiken nätti. Kuva ei tee sille oikein oikeutta, mutta minkäs teet kun kameran akku tilttasi ja käytössä oli iPhone ja pimeähkö olohuone. Nimesin sen Karuselliksi.

And here's the end result. It turned out quite pretty. The picture does not do it justice but that was the best I could do with iPhone camera and darkish livingroom.  I named it Carousel.

Lasipallot ovat ympäri maailmaa: päärynänmutoiset Roomasta, pari läpinäkyvää Riikan lentokentältä, lasilinnut Pentikiltä Lappeenrannasta ja alimmainen pallo taitaa itseasiassa olla myös Lappeenrannasta jostain pienestä käsityöpajasta.

Yksi paikka on vielä tyhjänä, mutta siihen on tarkoitus tulla myös lasilintu. Huomasin vain hieman liian myöhään että tarvitaan vielä yksi läpinäkyvä killutin täydentämään yläriviä ja kaupat olivat jo kiinni.

Mutta näin tänä viikonloppuna.

The glass balls are from around the world: the pear-shaped are from Rome, couple of clear glass balls we found at Riga airport, the glass birds are from Pentik and they're from Lappeenranta where I believe the big one is from also.

There's one space empty but it will hold a glass bird later. I noticed a bit too late that I need one more clear one to complete the upper row so the shops were closed already.

But that's from this weekend.

Bridgewater

Olen neulonutkin, vaikka tuntuu että mitään ei saa aikaan. Ehkä syynä on se, että neulon kaksi "puolijoukkuetelttaa" melkein peräperää. Ensimmäinen - josta ei valitettavasti ole kuvia - osoittautui jotenkin pieneksi, joten päätin neuloa sitten hieman eri langasta isomman version.

I've knitted, even though it feels I have not finished anything. Maybe the reason is that I've knit two quite substantive shawls in a row. The first - which I unfortunately do not have very good photos of - turned out to be somewhat small so I decided to knit a larger one using different yarn.

Tässä se sitten on,  kyseessä on Jared Floodin Bridgewater. Ihastuin muotoon ja tiettyyn vähäeleisyyteen. En ole kovin pitsisten huivien ystävä ja tässä sitä oli sopivassa suhteessa.

Here it is, Jared Flood's Bridgewater. I liked the shape and the understated elegance of the design. I do not care for overly lacy scarves and this had it in just the right amount.

Huivissa neulotaan ensin keskineliö, siitä poimitaan silmukat reunasta ja neulotaan ensimmäinen pitsikuvio keskeltä ulospäin. Sitten tehdään reunapitsi poikittain. Reunapitsissä meinasi mennä hermo, mutta tuli se lopulta valmiiksi.

The shawl is constructed so that you first knit the center garter-stitch square, pick up stitches around it and knit the first lace pattern from that. After which you knit the edging lace sideways. The lace edging took ages and was very boring but got finished eventually.

Tosin reunapitsin valmistumista viivästytti se, että lanka loppui kesken, tietysti noin parikymmentä senttiä ennen toista reunaa. Lanka on Huivi-Puffaa ja tietysti custom-värjäys joten olin ihan varma etten saisi sitä lisää. Onneksi Äiti-Puffa löysi samaa lankaa vielä yhden vyyhdin varastoistaan joten sain neulottua huivin loppuun. Lankaa meni loppujenlopuksi siis karvan yli kaksi vyyhtiä ja painoa tulee siis hieman päälle 200 g.

Although I got delayed in finishing the edging lace because I ran out of yarn. And of course about 20 centimeters before reaching the other end. The yarn in question is Huivi-Puffa and of course a custom dye so I was absolutely sure I could not get it more. Luckily I was wrong and Äiti-Puffa managed to find one more skein of the same colourway from her stash so I got to finish my scarf. All in all it took a bit over two skeins and so it weighs a bit over 200 grams.

Tietysti minulta sitten jäi lähes täysi kerä lankaa, jolla olen aloittanut jo uuden projektin. Katsotaan miten nyt käy...

Se on täällä, se on sievä - ja löytyypä sitä jo jostain kaupoistakin ja ensi viikolla ainakin.

Prinsessa ilman hernettä - Princess Without the Pea

Tein pienen viikonloppumatkan muutaman ystävän kanssa - meitä taisi olla melkein kaksikymmentä. Olimmen linnaneitoilemassa, alla on linna.

I did a bit of a weekend getaway with a few friends - about twenty or so. We went to play princess in the castle and here was our castle.

Viikonloppu, varsinkin lauantai meni todella nopeasti. Osansa tietysti oli silläkin että ranteessa ei ollut kelloa joten ajantaju katosi hyvin. Tosin eipä sitä kelloa olisi ehtinyt vilkuillakaan kun oli muuta puuhaa. 

The weekend, especially Saturday, went by really fast. Not having a watch on the wrist may have had something to do with it, easier to loose track of time. Though not that I'd have had remembered to watch the time anyway, had too much fun.

Sain valmiiksi yhden parin sukkia (no, toinen valmistui jo aiemmin). Ensimäiset epäparin sukat, Noroa tietysti. Ihan vaan vinkkinä, että kolmen kerroksen raidat eivät ole kaikkein kätevimmät neuloessa, vaikka lopputulos näyttääkin ihan nätiltä. Ja ei, minusta ei tullut norosukkalangan ylintä ystävää.

I finished a pair of socks (well, I had one sock done already). My first non-matching pair of socks, Noro of course. Hint - three row stripes are not very handy but they do sure look nice. And no, I still do not love Noro sock yarn.

Ja aloitin toista, siitä äidin ostamasta sukkalangasta. Hieman meinasi tulla rumasukkaa, sillä näissä ei kyllä ole maailmankaikkeuden nätein väriyhdistelmä, mutta vaihto Jaywalkereihin pelasti tilanteen.

And started another. I almost managed to make some ugly pair of socks, but then switched to Jaywalkers and I think I'm saved.
