No ei ihan, täytteenä käyttämäni muovirakeet vaan halusivat tunkea läpi joten päätin vaihtaa vartaloon ihan vanutäytteen. Meinasin tehdä myös hännänpoiston, mutta jätin sen kuitenkin paikoilleen. Poistin siitä vain täytteet että se mukautuu paremmin vaatteiden sisään.

Well, not quite. I used some plastic pellets inside the body and they started coming through the knit so I decided to change the stuffing to fibre. I also thought about performing taillectomy but decided to leave it on in the end. I just removed the stuffing from it so that it is not so pointy.

Naamakin on paikallaan ja kokoa tuli sellaiset 28 senttiä (kaukosäädin vieressä antamassa jotain ajatusta koosta). Virkkasin Kittyn kaksinkertaisesta Novitan 7 veljestä-langasta koon 5 virkkuukoukulla. Lankaa meni sellaiset arviolta 100 g.

Face is on now and the size is quite nice, 28 cm (the remote is there to give some idea of the size). I used white Novita 7 veljestä yarn doubled and 5 mm crochet hook. I spent about 100 g of yarn on it.

Kiinnitin päähän puolikkaan nepparia jotta pääkoristetta voi vaihtaa asujen mukaan.

I attached half of a snap to the head so that the head piece can be changed with the outfits.

Asuihin kuuluvia kenkiä en viitsinyt värkätä kun ne olisivat olleet lähinnä sukkia ja olisiko niitä jaksanut kuitenkaan noihin koipiin tunkea. Tämä siis päätyi syntymäpäivälahjaksi 5-vuotiaalle ja näytti olevan ihan mieluinen lahja, tosin juhlamekko piti ensimmäisenä vaihtaa vaaleanpunaiseen mekkoon. Kittyn ja asujen värkkääminen oli hauskaa, tekisi mieli tehdä itselleenkin moinen, mutta ei nyt ehkä ihan heti.

Each outfit had shoes to go but I did not bother with those since they would have been like socks and I doubt they would have seen much use anyway. This was a 5-year present for a little girl and she seemed to like it, though first thing to do was to change the outfit from party dress to pink dress. Crocheting was quite fun, and I feel like making one for myself also but maybe not right now.

Just in English this time, questionnaire answers.

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely not like?

I've knit with many pleasant and unpleasant yarns. I think I like the Hand Maiden and Fleece Artist yarns I've knit with best (Sea Silk, Casbah) and now I'm knitting with Swiss Mountain Cahmere and Silk, pure butter on the needles. And Rowan Calmer is very agreeable to knit with and Lane Borgosesia Merinos Otto was nice too. So maybe we have a theme here? Natural fibers, merino, cashmere, silk. Can't go wrong with those.

Not so nice are those with too high acrylic content. I don't enjoy knitting with ribbon yarns either or ladder or eyelash/fun fur.

What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

Options set stays in its binder mostly, then I have a nice wooden box for my circulars and a fabric thingy for my dpns.

How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

For ages. I learned in school and knit the obligatory stuff (socks, mittens, fair-isle leg warmers etc) and then promptly ignored knitting until a few years later when I was in high school and had to study for exams. So, many, many years. And I would consider my skill level being advanced.

Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I think I have an Amazon wish list but it is very outdated so no, not really. I've tried to add patterns I like on my Ravelry queue/favourites but I'm not too good in that either.

What’s your favorite scent?

I don't do scents much, not in the perfume sense anyway. I don't like strong scents and if I use a scented product I prefer it to be a scented body lotion. Something fresh, fruity smells. Flowery smells tend to turn into something resembling cat pee on my skin. But the one I've used most is Elizabeth Arden Green Tea.

Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

Yes, I like a bit of chocolate now and then. Or salty licourice. Don't care for fruit or hard candies that much.

What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

Well, I do the odd Christmas cards but not that much else. Oh, and crochet once in a while. Though my crochet being suitable for bullet proof vests the only things I crochet are stuffed toys and some edgings. Nope, don't spin, trying to stay away from that and jewellery.

What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I used to say that anything else than country but can't say that anymore since I got acquainted with Jace Everett (because of True Blood). But, I have things in my playlist from Mudvayne to Tschaikovski. And yes, my computer/stereo/iPod/phone can play MP3s.

What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand?

At the moment I'm quite partial to teal, petrol blue and turquoise/aqua/etc. But I generally prefer cold colours (purples, violets, etc) and don't much care for the warmer ones or basic colours. Not really into yellow.

What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I have a husband and a cat.

Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Scarves yes, hats only if I have to, mittens - well, my fingers tend to suffer when it's cold so mittens would be nice but then again they let the wind through. So no, no mittens, though felted would be ok. Ponchos no. Don't even want to.

What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Sweaters are nice, scarves too (easy to take along), socks are small and handy.

What are you knitting right now?

Ho-hum, I knew you were going to ask this. Ok, I have three short sleaved things on the needles, one fichu and one set of socks at the moment. And crocheting a Hello Kitty. That's all, I think. No, wait, a scarf too.

Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

Who wouldn't? Though, I have to give a word of warning here - my neck is very sensitive so nothing scratchier than merino gets close to it. Just can't do it.

Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

Circular and dpns. Not plastic, anything else is ok. I have the Options set and some Harmony tips. Circulars I have from KnitPicks and Addi.

Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

Yes and yes.

How old is your oldest UFO?

Couple of years.

What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

I'm not sure if I have a favourite holiday. Most of them are quite ok though I don't do that much decorating etc. I do like to make my own Christmas cards, but haven't been able to do so for a couple of years due to...stuff. But, Christmas maybe.

Is there anything that you collect?

Um....yarn? And books. And possibly shoes. And jewellery - though I get that as presents so it's not all my doing (earrings are nice and handy).

Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

Well, I do like Norah Gaughan patterns, and have had my eye on some of her booklets but haven't ordered any (we can't get them here). And Kim Hargreaves came out with a book as well, that would be nice.

I don't currently have any magazine subscriptions for I let them all expire. I ordered VK and IK, I think I have the spring/summer issues from those but that's it. The UK magazine The Knitter has some nice patterns in though.

Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?

Humm...nothing comes to mind. Though, I think I'd like to try magic loop properly at some point but I have a book for that (2-at-a-time socks)

Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes I am. It's size 39 European. Though I rarely bother to knit from any pattern so that would be a nice surprise.

Kaikki alkoi ihan viattomasti. Veljellä oli syntymäpäivät jo toukokuussa, ja vaikka annoimme lahjaksi ylimääräisiä huonekaluja, niin silti teki mieli tehdä jotain. Ja kerran oli puhe moisesta ja kun intiaaninimeni on "se joka antaa outoja lahjoja " ja kotona oli luonnonvalkoista lankaa niin siitä se sitten lähti.

Tosin piti ostaa askartelupunoksia (piippurasseja siis) ja silmiä.

It all started quite innocently. My brother had his birthday in May and although we gave him some extra furniture I remember talking about this at some time and my indian name being "She Who Gives Strange Presents" and I happening to have some natural wool at home. Well, it was faith, really, or divine intervention.

Though, I needed some pipe cleaners (since they now have gazillion colours and have nothing to do with pipes they have a fancier name in Finnish but I have no idea what it is in English - craft something) and eyes.

Tulossa kitty - Becoming kitty

Franken-kittystä on nyt tullut blankokitty jolla on hieman paksut reidet, taisin täyttää niitä hieman liikaa. No, pysyypä pystyssä - tai pysyisi jos olisi pystyssäpysyvää lajia.

Franken-kitty has now turned into a blanco-kitty with slightly thick legs. Well, all the better to stand - if it was the standing kind that is.

Tein yhden mekonkin jo ja mekkoon sopivan rusetin. Kenkiä aloitin mutta niistä olisi tullut mallia kanootti niin päätin olla tekemättä. Ja sitäpaitsi eipä tuollaisissa töpöjaloissa kengät oikein pysyisikään. Asuja on tulossa vielä ainakin pari lisää ja jokaiseen tulee asuun sopiva rusetti joten ajattelin ommella kittylle päähän puolikkaan nepparista niin rusetteja voi vaihdella haluttaessa.

I made one dress already and a matching bow. I started the shoes also but they were going to be huge and it's not like those stubby legs can hold any shoes anyway so I decided not to make them. I'll probably make at least two outfits more and they come with matching bows. So, I decided I'll sew a half of a snap to kitty's head so that changing bows is easier.

It's been surprisingly fun to crochet kitty and I feel it would be nice to have one of my own too. Let's see if I still feel like it after I've crocheted all the dresses....

Löytöjä ja lahjanpoikasta - Yarn finds and the start of a present

Pysähdyin eilen Itäkeskuskessa lankaostoksilla kun tarvitsin ruskeata lankaa. Koska olin liikkeellä aika myöhään, niin ainoa lankaostospaikka avoinna oli Anttila. Sain ruskeaa lankaa ja hieman jotain muutakin. Siellä hyllyssä köllötteli ainakin kolmea väriä silkkivillaa (voi olla että oli neljääkin, en muista tarkasti, mutta ainakin löytyi harmaata, punaruskeaa ja tätä vihreätä). Made in Italy, valmistuttaja Anttila ja koostumus 40% silkkiä, 20% merinovillaa, 30% puuvillaa ja 10% viskoosia. 50 g kerässä metrejä noin 120 ja suosituspuikot 4 - 4.5 mm. Hinta 2.5 € / kerä, että ei paha. Ostin kymmenen.

I stopped at Itäkeskus yesterday for I needed some brown yarn. And since I was there a bit late, the only place to find yarn was Anttila. Yep, I got my brown yarn and a bit of something else too. For there on the shelves was this silky tweed in at least three colours (maybe four, don't remember, but there was at least light gray, maroon and this green). Made in Italy by Anttila and it's 40% silk, 20% merino wool, 30 % cotton and 10% viscose. A 50 g ball holds about 120 meters and the recommended needle size is 4 - 4.5 mm and it cost 2.5 euros a ball. I bought ten.

Olin matkalla anoppilaan ja ostin ruskean langan ja heräteostoksen lisäksi myös valkoista Novitan 7-veljestä lankaa. Ja virkkuukoukun. Istuin sohvalla, seurustelin ja virkkailin. Nyt minulla on franken-Kitty. En ymmärrä miten tuon pään virkkaaminen oli viime kerralla niin vaikeaa. Kyllä se siitä nyt tuli, vaikka ei taidakaan olla ihan täsmälleen ohjeen mukainen mutta ainakin se on ihan selvästi ei-pyöreä. Tungin päähän ja raajoihin vanua täytteeksi ja vartalo-osa saanee sisäänsä myös hieman muovirakeita helpottamaan istumista. Ja vaatteita pitäisi virkkailla myös. Mutta nyt on lahja hyvässä vaiheessa, syntymäpäivät ovat parin viikon päästä. Oikeaa etusormea hieman vain aristaa moinen virkkaamisintoilu, tottumattomalle.

I was on my way to my in-laws when I made the pit stop and on top of the brown yarn and the surprice purchase I bought some white Novita 7-veljestä yarn. And a crochet hook. And then I sat on the sofa, talked and crocheted. Now I have a franken-Kitty. I don't understand how I had such difficulties with the head last time. I got it quite easily this time and even though it's not 100% according to the pattern it's decidedly un-round. I stuffed some fibre into the legs, arms and head, the body will get some plastic granules in it as well to help with the sitting. And I'm planning on making some clothes too. But I'm quite happy with my progress, for the birthday where I'll give this as a present is in two weeks. My right index finger is a bit sore though from all the crocheting since it's not used to it.

Pientä kivaa - Small things

Pari päivää on vaivannut joku ihme kesäflunssa ja on tullut nukuttua. Laskeskelin tuossa äsken että viimeisen 48 tunnin aikana on tullut nukuttua vähän päälle 20. Hereillä ollessa on tullut jonkin verran neulottua ja tuijotettua ohjelmia töllöstä. Nyt pyörii Midsomerin murhat-tunnari päässä - kauheita rikollisuuden pesiä nuo pienet englantilaiset maalaiskylät.

Some kind of summer (or swine?) flu has been bugging me for the past couple of days and I've slept a lot. I just calculated that during the last 48 ours I've been asleep more than 20 of them. When I've been awake I've knitted some and watched all kinds of programs on the telly. Now I have the tune of Midsomer Murders stuck in my head - terrible dens of crime those small English country villages.

Tässä pari kamerasta löytynyttä neulekuvaa paremman puutteessa. Mallina toimii L'anzan hiusmömmöpurkki - kallista mutta hintansa arvoista. Ja neule sitten, no se on kesätunika Baby Bornille. Käytin siihen pienintä langanpäätä myöten loput Schachenmayrin Cotton Linenistä. Tapani mukaan tein hieman liian suuret hiha-aukot, mutta pari kerrosta virkattuja kiinteitä silmukoita pelasti tilannetta hieman.

Here's a couple of knit photos I have taken with the camera. The model is a hair product from L'anza (taffy) - expensive but worth every penny. Oh, and the knit? Well, it's a summer tunic for a Baby Born doll. I used all of the Schachenmayr Cotton Linen I had left. And as is my habit I made the sleeve openings a bit too big but a couple of crocheted rows fixed it somewhat.

I think I should go back to work tomorrow. But today I managed to book a trip to Paris on September - me and my mom (Phildar! La Droguerie!) and I guess I could go to bed... It's been hours since my evening nap. Next week: holiday!

Se on taas sunnuntai - It's Sunday again

Juhannus on juhlittu ja pitkä viikonloppu on kohta ohi. Aika siis taas neulekatsaukselle. Musta paita on edennyt tässä vähitellen. Hihat ovat paikallaan (kainaloaukko näkyy vielä) ja alaosan ribbi aloitettu. Kaula-aukosta tuli hieman avara, joten kehittelen siihen todennäköisesti jonkinlaisen ribbireunuksen.

The Midsummer is over and so is the long weekend. So it's time for a knit update. The black thingy has reached the stage where I've started the hem ribbing. The neck opening is a bit wide, so I'll have to do something about it. I'll probably do some kind of ribbed edging.

Lisäksi aloitin henkilökohtaiset viimeistelyviikot kun on jokunen odottamassa viimeistelyä. Neulekonekurssilla tehdyt boleronpalat ovat jo melkein kaikki yhdessä, hihat kiinnitän viimeiseksi. Reunuksiin teen käsin 2x2 joustinneuletta, alareunassa on 512 silmukkaa ja puikot on 2 mm. Että sillai, kestänee vielä tovin.

I started my personal finishing weeks for I have a few of those that need finishing. It is just so boring. But, I got almost all the bolero pieces together (I will attach the sleeves last) and started the edging. I will knit 2x2 ribbing by hand to all the edges. The lower edge has 512 stitches and I'm using 2 mm needles. What joy.

Olisi varmaan aika ostaa uusi kännykkä. Nykyinen on jotain kaksi vuotta vanha ja mokoma hajoaa jo käsiin. Kökköä. Mutta ostaako uusi Nokia vai odottaako uutta iPhonea?

I think I need a new cellphone. My current one is about two years old and it is falling to pieces. Not fun. But do I buy a new Nokia or wait for the new iPhone?

Mustaa ja sinistä - Black and blue

Hups, kohta on jo kesäkuun puoliväli enkä ole blogannut tässä kuussa vielä kertaakaan. Ei kyllä ole ihmeempiä tullut tehtyäkään, olen tahkonnut pipoja ja sitten siirryin tekemään mustaa.

Hassua miten ideat kehittyvät. Tässä yhden neuleen kehityskaari esimerkkinä. Ystävä pyysi apua ohjeen tulkintaan (kyseessä oli Novitan pitsibolero) ja totesin että kivalta näyttää, pitäisiköhän itsekin tehdä moinen. Sitten muistin että varastossa on mustaa Hjertegarnin Ribboota (bambu/soijaa) joka pitäisi johonkin käyttää ja musta bolerohan olisi kovin käytännöllinen. Sen jälkeen muistin että olin tehnyt viime kesänä mallitilkun langasta kynttilänliekkikuviolla. Mutta koska en tietenkään laittanut minnekään ylös käyttämääni puikkokokoa niin piti tehdä uusi, mallitilkku siis. Ja mikä bolero? Tästä on nyt kyllä tulossa lyhythihainen raglanneule, alaosa ja hihat joustinta, yläosa pitsikuviota.

Whops, it's almost the middle of June and I haven't blogged once. Not that I've had that much to show for I've knit hats and then I changed to black.

It is funny how ideas develop. Let me give you an example. A friend asked for help deciphering a knitting pattern. It was this small lacy bolero from Novita. I thought that looked nice and I could use one myself. Then I remembered that I had this bamboo-soy yarn (Hjertegarn Ribboo) in my stash that I could use. I found the yarn and remembered that I had made this swatch out of it last year using a candle flame pattern and it looked really nice. And of course I did not write down the needle size so I had to make another one, swatch that is. And what bolero? This will become a short-sleeved raglan cardi with 2x2 rib sleeves and bottom, top with this candle flame pattern.

Hihat valmiina liitettäväksi yläosaan. Teen taas omituisesti yläosa - hihat - lisää yläosaa - alaosa, kun en osannut päättää kuinka korkean pitsiosuuden haluan.

Sleeves are ready to be connected with the lace part. I'm knitting the cardi in a weird order - lace part - sleeves - finish the upper part - then the bottom, because I could not decide how long I should make the lacy portion.

Eilen KIPpailtiin Ursulassa vaikka aurinko paistoi ja oli lämmin. No, aamusella näytti kyllä todella harmaalta ja sateiselta mutta tietenkin sade odotti iltaa jolloin sitten jymisi oikein urakalla. Muutenkin kippailut meinasivat omalta kohdalta jäädä väliin kun sain ikävän reaktion naamaan jostain aineesta (todennäköisesti kuorinta-aineesta). Kyllä sitä aiemminkin on ollut, satunnaisia kutisevia läiskiä lähinnä kaulassa suihkun jälkeen, mutta ne ovat yleensä menneet ohi nopeasti. Nyt oli koko naama sen verran läiskikäs, kuumottava ja kutiseva että ei viitsinyt toviin ihmisten ilmoille mennä. Pääsin kyllä lopulta onneksi liikkeelle mikä oli onnekasta sillä Zeska oli liikkeellä itsevärjättyjen lankojensa kanssa. Tänne kotiutui neljä vyyhtiä turkoosia lankaa (juu, turkoosi kausi kukoistaa). Katsokee, kaunista! Nam! Näitä on tarpeeksi puseroon, nyt vaan pitäisi keksiä hyvä malli. Ehkä jotain palmikoita tai pientä kuviota? Niin, pohjalanka on Järbon 2-säikeistä villalankaa.

Yesterday we KIPped at Cafe Ursula even though it was sunny and warm. Well, it looked really grey and rainy in the morning, though then it decided to wait and get rainy and thundery in the evening. Then it was really rainy - and thundery. I almost missed the KIP altogether for I got a horrible reaction to something I used in the shower (probably the facial peel). I've had similar problems before, although small scale, some red and itchy patches on the neck after shower (no obvious cause) but they usually go away quite quickly. But this time my whole face and neck was covered in red, itchy blotches. It was quite uncomfortable but finally my face returend to somewhat normal state. Lucky I got to Ursula for Zeska was there with her hand-dyed yarns and this is what came home with me. It's turquoise! And pretty! Yum! There's about 550 grams of it so it should be enough for a sweater, now I just have to figure out what kind. Maybe some simple cables or some simple stich pattern. Oh, the base yarn is Järbo 2-ply wool, feels really nice.

Mikä ei kuulu joukkoon? - Which one does not belong?

Kun en nyt viitsi esitellä täällä samoja kesäpipoja aina ja muuta ei ole tullut neulottua niin keskitytään sitten shoppailuun. Mikä siinä muuten on, että aina kun päättää lähteä shoppailemaan niin ei löydy mitään? Kaipailin vaihtelua puna-beessiin kesävaatetukseeni ja mielessä siinteli jotain kivaa turkoosia. No, kolmen tunnin shoppailun tuloksena oli jokunen "hmm, no joo"-mielipide ja sain ostettua mustan kauluksellisen t-paidan tyyliin "tätä voi sitten talvella pitää neuleen alla". Hohhoijaa. No, lankojen kanssa ei ole sitä ongelmaa.

Since I don't want to show the same summer hats all the time and I haven't really knitted anything else I'll concentrate on shopping. Why is it that every time you decide to go shopping you can't find anything? I wanted some change to my red-beige summer garderobe and I was thinking of something nice in turquoise. Well, after three hours of shopping I had encountered some "well, maybe" clothes and managed to buy a black t-shirt with collar in the style of "I can wear this under my knits come winter". Sigh. Well, I don't seem to have that trouble with yarns.

Olen ollut muuten aika vähällä shoppailulla tässä jo tovin, mutta parin viime viikon aikana sitten repesin. Menitassa oli Rowanin Lenpur Lineniä halvennuksessa ja sitä lähti mukaan kolmea väriä yhteensä paidallisen verran. Mitä siitä vaikka edellinenkään Lenpur-neule ei ole vielä valmis.

I haven't really bought that much yarn lately but during the last few weeks I made up for it. Rowan Lenpur Linen was on sale at the LYS and I bought home three colours together enough to make a cardi. Let's not mention here that the last Lenpur knit is not yet finshed, shall we?

If I can't find turquoise clothing I'll buy it in yarn and ordered Sublime Soya Cotton from England. This needs to become a summer top during the next few weeks.

Ja vaikka kesä ei ole vielä kunnolla alkanutkaan - ellei se helle sitten ollut jo tässä - niin talvi tulee kuitenkin. Silloin on kiva kääriytyä turkoosiin kashmiriin. Huusin mokoman epähuomiossa ebaystä, Colourmartin kashmiria dk-vahvuisena 450 g. Nyt vain tarvitaan enää se täydellinen ohje.

And even though the summer is not yet properly on its way - unless the hot we had today was it - the winter will eventually come and then it's nice to wrap up in cashmere. I accidentally bid for this on ebay and got it - 100% dk cashmere from Colourmart. Now all I need is the perfect pattern.

Sitten hieman erilaista. Ensimmäiset akryylit mitä on tullut ostettua vuosiin. Kyllä, 97 % akryyliä ja 3 % lisukkeita (acessories) löytyy tästä kirkkaanpunaisesta langasta. Eiköhän tästä tule jotain kivaa jollekin kummilapselle.

And then for something totally different. The first acrylics I've bought for years. Yes, there's 97% acrylic and 3% acessories in this bright red yarn. I'll make something for one of my god-children from this.

Enpä valitsisi enää - I would not pick anymore

Olen neulonut mutta hirveästi ei ole näytettävää. Kesäpipa nro 3 on puikoilla (vaaleanpunaista tällä kertaa), neuloin kaulaliinan ja siitä tuli hieman vähemmän täydellinen mutta kelpasi kuitenkin (ei kuvaa valitettavasti), Hilja on vieläkin kesken mutta Lenpur Linen takki edistyy hitaasti. Kohta pääsen jo hihapyöriön kimppuun.

I've knitted but since I seem to repeat myself there's not that much new to show. A summer hat number three is on the needles (pink this time) , then I made a scarf which turned out not so perfect but the recipient seemed pleased with it anyway (sorry, no photo), Hilja is still not totally re-knitted but my Lenpur Linen cardi is progressing slowly but surely. Soon I'll get to start the sleeve caps.

Mutta yksi asia mikä tässä on ruvennut harmittamaan on Knitpicksin puikkojen laatu. Minulta löytyy puisia Harmony-sukkapuikkoja, metallisia sukkapuikkoja, Options-kitti metallisena ja jokunen määrä Harmonyn puisia päitä sekä muutama pyöröpuikko. Eniten harmitusta on aiheuttanut tuo Options-systeemi. Ja erityisesti ne kaapelit. Milloin kaapeli irtoaa siitä metalliholkista, millon kierteet eivät toimi. Ja nyt katsokaa mitä kävi puisille pyöröpuikoille kun nostin ne laukusta. Lähtipä pää vetäjän käteen - ei katkennut mutta lohkesi. Puikkojen koko oli n. 2.5 - 2 mm, mutta kannattaako noin pieniä tehdä puisina jos ne eivät kestä normaalia käyttöä.

One thing that has started to bug me lately is the quality of Knitpicks needles. I have the dpn set in metal and wood (Harmony), the Options set in metal, some Harmony tips and a few circular needles in small sizes, both metal and wood. What has caused the most amount of grey hairs has been the Options-system. I've had trouble with the cable coming out from the metal bit and with the cables not attaching to the tips properly. And now look what happened to my Harmony circulars when I lifted them out of my bag. Not a pretty sight. I wonder if it was a good idea to make the small circs out of wood if they don't withstand normal handling.

Ja entäs asiakaspalvelu sitten? Kyllä, uusia osia saa tilalle, mutta vain USA:han (ja ilmeisesti Kanadaan). Mutta entäs jos ei satu asumaan USA:ssa mutta silti haluaa valittaa surkeista tuotteista? No, se on vähän voi voi kun ilmeisesti kirjeen lähettäminen muualle maailmaa on niin kamalan vaativaa ja mahdotonta. Ugh. Ärsyttää.

And don't get me started on the customer service. Yes, they send you replacements but only to USA (and maybe Canada). But what if you don't live in either of the countries and still want to rant about crappy products? Well, it seems sending a letter outside the States is too demanding and somehow impossible. Ugh. I'm really annoyed now.

Kiertoharjoituksia - Excercises in twisting

Kun isommat neuleet ei nyt oikein onnistu, neulotaan sitten pieniä (paitsi Hilja on kohta taas kunnossa). Ensimmäisenä piponen, jolla ei vielä ole nimeä. Tämä meni lahjaksi 2-vuotiaalle ja samalla ohjeella olisi tarkoitus tehdä pipa myös pienemmälle. Ohje ehkä tulevaan Ullaan.

When I don't have much luck with bigger knits at the moment I decided to move into smaller ones. Here's a summer hat that does not yet have a name. This was a present for a 2-year old and I'm planning on making a smaller one too. The pattern will probably be in the next Ulla.

Then I've experimented with short rows. I'm not planning on making a corkscrew scarf (there's plenty of those), just something that would wrap easily around the neck.

Lupasin tehdä äidille pellavalangasta tyynynpäällisiä ja koska hukkasin edellisen mallitilkun muistiinpanot (ylläri) niin piti tehdä uusi. No, siinä sitten vetelin tiheyskokeiluja koneella ja kelkka jumiutui langanpätkään ja sitä piti selvitellä. Irrotin kelkan koneesta ja poistin langan ja sisältä kuului kilinää. Kääntelin kelkkaa ja sieltä putkahti ulos tällainen. Ja ei, minulla ei ole minkäänlaista ideaa siitä mikä tuo on ja mistä se irtosi ja onko se jotenkin oleellinen osa vai ei. En nähnyt äkkiseltään mitään paikkaa mihin moisen voisi survoa enkä halunnut ruveta ruuvailemaan kelkkaa palasiksi joten jatkoin vain neulomista. Hyvin se näytti sujuvan, ilman tuotakin. Mutta eikö sitä koneita rassaillessa yleensä jää jotain osia yli?

I promised to make my Mom some pillow covers with linen yarn and since I lost the notes on the last swatch (what a surprise) I had to make a new one. As I did the tension swatches on the machine a piece of yarn got caught in the carriage and it jammed. After I removed the carriage from the machine and the offending yarn from the carriage I was planning on putting it back on the machine when I heard strange noises coming inside the carriage. And after some gentle shaking this popped out. No, I have no idea what it is and if it is essential or not. I did not see any place in the carriage that looked like it was missing a piece and I did not feel like ripping the carriage apart so I just went on knitting. The machine seemed to perform quite well even after the piece fell out. So we'll see. But don't you have extra parts after fiddling with machinery usually?

Yksinkertaisuus on kaunista - Simple is beautiful

Ehdin viimeisellä neulekonekurssikerralla tehdä boleron palasten lisäksi huivin. Pidän yksinkertaisista, selkeälinjaisista vaatteista joissa on kuitenkin joku juju. Tästä puuttuu vielä se juju, mutta muuten se on kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessaan kaunis.

On the last machine knitting class I managed to finish the bolero pieces and make a scarf. I like simple clothes that have smooth, clear lines and a bit of something. The scarf is still missing that something but is still quite beautiful in all its simplicity.

Käytin huiviin kartion Colourmartin merino/viskoosi/kashmiria (55/35/10) väriä Aubergine joka on lojunut varastossa vuoden 2006 lopusta asti. Painoa kartiolla oli 150 g ja metrejä noin 2100. Vetelin langan ihan yksinkertaisella jokaneulan 1x1-ribillä. Se syö enemmän lankaa mutta neulepinta pysyy kauniisti auki eikä vedä kasaan kuten normijoustimella.

For the scarf I used a cone of Colourmart's merino/viscose/kashmir (55/35/10) in colourway Aubergine, that had been sitting in the stash since late -06. The cone weighed 150 grams and had about 2100 meters. I knit the yarn quite simply using every needle rib at 1x1. It eats more yarn but the resulting knit stays open unlike normal rib.

Olin todella epäileväinen langan riittoisuuden suhteen. Kyllä, tiesin että se on ohutta mutta silti 150 g tuntuu kovin vähältä enkä halunnut mitään nysää. Mutta neulottaessa lankaa riitti ja riitti (vaikka neuloinkin vainoharhaisena kartio vaa'alla) ja tuloksena oli n. 28 cm leveä ja 190 cm pitkä huivi. Se kaipaa vielä kunnon pesua koska lanka on öljyttyä. Teen reunoihin jonkinlaiset pampulaviritykset koska olen huomannut että reunapaino auttaa huivia pysymään paremmin paikallaan.

I was really sceptical about how much I could get out of the yarn. Yes, I know it was thin but still, 150 grams is not that much and I did not want to end up with something that was almost but not quite long enough. But as I got knitting the yarn just went on and on (my scepticism caused me to knit with the cone on scales) and I ended up with this: 28 cm wide and about 190 cm long scarf. It still needs a good wash to remove the oil from the yarn and that little something. I think I'll add some kind of pompoms to the edges for I've noticed it helps the scarf stay better in place.

Yksi askel eteenpäin, kaksi taakse - One step forward, two steps back

Hieman otsikonmukaiselta tuntuu neulonta välillä. Ai miksikö? No tarkastellaanpa viimeaikojen saldoa:

1. aloitin Tomaton - luin kommentit Ravelrystä ja yritin valita tarpeeksi pienen koon. No ei onnistunut, mokoma on siltikin liian iso rinnan kohdalta eikä sitä enää pelasta mikään vaan purkuun menee (onneksi en neulonut loppuun asti). Kysymys on että aloitanko sen vielä uudestaan vai keksinko jotain muuta. Neliökauluksellinen puuvillasekoitepaita 3/4-hihoilla olisi kyllä ihan kiva, mutta en usko että tarvitsen siihen mitään ohjeita vaan katson itse sopivat silmukkamäärät.
2. aloitin huivinalkua omasta päästä seuraavaa Ullaa varten. Ja purin ja aloitin ja purin ja jne. Ei tullut ideasta huivia, tuli kippuralankaa.
3. tein tässä aika joku sitten Hiljan. Muuten ihan kiva, mutta joku ei kiinnittänyt tarpeeksi huomiota yläosan neuletiheyteen ja se venyi. Ja purettiin osaksi ja tuli ryppylankaa jne. Ja nyt se on tässä: etuosa on neulottu uudestaan.

I'm starting to get that feeling about my knitting. Why, do you ask? Well, let's see...

1. I started Tomato - read the comments about it on Ravelry and tried to choose small enough size. It still came out way too big around the bust and sleeves (I tried it on halfway) and can't be saved. So to the frogpond it goes. The question is should I start again or what? I could use a square neck cotton-mix pullover with 3/4 sleeves but I don't think I need a pattern for that, I could just use my own stitch counts.
2. I had an idea for a scarf for the upcoming Ulla and I started it. And ripped it. And started again and...you get the drift. Did not get a scarf, got curly yarn.
3. Knit Hilja a while back. But somebody did not pay close enough attention to the row gauge at the top part and it stretched. Then it got partially ripped and I got curly yarn etc. Now it is in the state pictured above: front part reknit, on to back.

Mutta neuloja on sitkeä eläin ja jatkaa aina vain. Purkukammotusten seuraksi lähti muotoutumaan takki Rowanin Lenpur Linenistä. Löysin Ketunpaää-tuotteen sivuilta ohjeen ko. langalle ja sehän näytti ihan kivalle. Hieman joutunee muokkaamaan tuota vartalo-osaa A-mallista muuksi. En kyllä yrittämälläkään saanut tiheyttä ihan täsmäämään mutta pääsin 2.5 mm puikoilla tarpeeksi lähelle ja niillä mennään. Puikoille ovat päässeet ensimmäisinä hihat.

But a knitter is a resilient animal and keeps on going. While I ponder what to do with the ones requiring a trip to the frogpond I started a cardi from Rowan Lenpur Linen. I found a pattern from a Finnish online yarn store page (Cari) and liked the design. I think I will modify the patttern a bit though to something else than A-shape. And I could not match the gauge but got close enough using 2.5 mm needles and I'll go with those. Started on the sleeves.

Tässä vapun kunniaksi lupaamiani huivikuvia. Ihan kivan kokoinen siitä tuli, vaikka päädyinkin tekemään sen pienemmän koon kun lanka loppui kesken.

Enää ei lomailla - It's not holiday anymore

Loma on ohi ja olen ollut töissä viikon, vaikka se tuntuukin pidemmältä ajalta. Ensi viikolla pitäisi alkaa kouluttamaan ihmisiä uuden projektityökalun käyttöön ja viikko menikin mukavasti koulutusmateriaalia tehden. Saatiin materiaali valmiiksi hyvin ja ajoissa perjantaina viideltä. Mutta blogaamista ei oikein jaksanut ajatella, hyvä että neulomista yleensä. Viime viikonloppuna aloitettua aivotonta sukkaa neuloin kyllä hieman, tosin sitäkin piti purkaa kun olin onnistunut mömmimään mallineuleessa jotain. Ilmeisesti ei ole niin aivotonta neuletta ettei siinäkin onnistuisi tekemään virheitä jos ei yhtään keskity.

Mutta tässä se on, SWTC:n Tofutsies-langasta (väri 727) aloitettu kesäsukka. Törmäsin lankaan varastonsiivoussessioissa ja se pääsi sukkalankajonon kärkeen. Tuntuma on miellyttävä, puuvillamainen ja neuloutuu mukavasti. Väri olisi mielestäni voinut olla lila-pinkkikirjavaa ilman musta-punaista osuutta (mikä kuvassa näyttää varjota ei sitä ole vaan eri väriä). Toivon pintaneuleen hieman estävän läikittymistä, saa nähdä mitä tapahtuu kun sukka tuosta etenee. Ai, ja tässä on myös menossa ensimmäinen kokeilu neliskulmaisilla puikoilla. En vielå ole huomannut mitään eroa normaalipuikkoihin verrattuna - tasaista tulee mutta niin tulee tavallisillakin. Ehkä eron huomaisi enemmän sileässä, nurjalla puolella?

The holiday is over and I've been back at work for a week. Though it feels like a much longer time. We're going to start training people on how to use the new project management tool and I've spent last week doing the training material with a colleague which we finished just in time on Friday at five. But I haven't had much energy left over for blogging nor for knitting. I have knit the supposedly brainless sock I started last weekend though apparently that wasn't brainless enough for I've had to rip it some already since I fudged the pattern repeat.

But here it is, the almost brainless sock from SWTC:s Tofutsies (727) yarn. I ran into the yarn while I was spring-cleaning my stash and it jumped to the top of the sock-yarn queue. The yarn feels really nice, cottony, and it is nice to knit. I don't care much for the black-red part of the colourway (what looks like a shadow on the photo is not, it's the black-red part) for I think the yarn would have been much nicer with just the pink-lilac part. I hope my simple stitch pattern prevents the pooling somewhat but I guess I'll just have to wait and knit. Oh, and this is the first time with square needles too. I can't say I feel a difference compared to normal dpns. Yes, the stitches are even but so are they with normal needles too. Maybe there would be more difference with stockinette at the purl side?

Icarus on ollut valmiina jo tovin. Sain ystävälliseltä ravelryläiseltä lisää lankaa ettei tarvinnut repiä pelihousuja. Sillä lanka loppui toistamiseen kesken, nyt kaksi kerrosta vaille loppua. Saamani lanka ei ollut ihan samaa sävyä, vaan keltaisempaa, mutta sitä ei kyllä tuosta helposti huomaa. Ja jos joku huomauttaa asiasta niin en lupaa vastata mitään kaunista. Eilen rupesin vihdoin toimiin ja pyöräytin huivin pesukoneen huuhtelu-linkous -ohjelman läpi ja kaivoin pingoitusraudat esille (ensimmäinen kerta niillekin).

Icarus has been finished for some time now. I got more yarn from a friendly fellow raveller so that I didn't have to throw a fit when I ran out of yarn the second time. The yarn I got was not the same shade, it was more yellow, but you can't really tell that the last two rows are knit with slightly different colour. And if someone points that out I might say something rude back. Anyhow, I finally put the thing trough the rinse-spin cycle yesterday and dug out the blocking wires (first time for them too).

Hieman myöhemmin tilanne oli tämä. Käytin rautoja T-tyyliin, eli päällä ja keskellä ja tökin kärjet yksitellen mattoon. Toimi hyvin ja oli nopeata. Matto on edelleen kokoa 120x180, joten ihan sopuisan kokoinen huivi tuli, arviolta 170 cm leveä ja noin 100 cm korkea. Tänään voisi yrittää ottaa poseerauskuvia ulkona.

Slightly later the situation was this. I used the blocking wires in T-form, that is on the top and in the center and pinned the points individually to the rug. The size of the rug is 180 cm x 120 cm so I'd say the scarf came about 170 cm wide and 100 cm tall. Not a bad size. Hopefully I'll get some "in action"-photos taken today.

Joku kävi eilen Anttilassa ja osti neljä kerää lankaa. Coralloa ovat muutkin ostaneet ja ostinpa sitten minäkin, kaksi vihreää ja kaksi harmaata. Harmaassa olin kaupassa huomaavinani jotain pientä meleerausta, mutta ei se näin kotioloissa siltä näytä. Mutta, edullista sukkalankaa jokatapauksessa, jos tekee mieli esim. palmikkosukkaa tai muuta.

Someone went to Anttila yesterday and bought four skeins of yarn. Other people have bought Corallo and now I have it too, two in pale green and two in grey. I thought I saw some small variegation in the grey one but now that I look at it I don't. But, it's cheap yarn and suitable for socks. Patterns should come out nicely since the colours are quite light.
