Jotain melkein valmista - Something almost finished

Tukholma on taas koettu - ja lankakaupat vältetty. Kävin kyllä Åhlénsilla ja NK:lla käsityöosastoilla mutta en varsinaisesti lankaa etsinyt (tulihan sitä katseltua kyllä). Ensinmainitulla oli vain jotain peruslankoja mutta NK:lta löytyy sitten mm. Rowania ja muuta. Silmiin sattui Sirdarin 100% bambua oleva nauhalanka. Onneksi siinä oli aika laimeita värejä niin ei tullut edes kiusausta. Mutta bambu taitaa olla nyt in.

Stockholm has been seen and done - and yarn shops avoided. I did visit sewing-sections at both Åhléns and NK but I did not particularly look for yarn (ok, I did look). The first mentioned had only some basic yarns but NK had Rowan and stuff. Sirdar's 100% bambou tube yarn caught my eye. Luckily the colours were so anemic that I wasn't too tempted. But apparently bambou is it now.

Saturday and Sunday and today was spent at home. I caught a bug (again) and Saturday evening was spent pretty much snuffling and sneezing. I did, however, knit on both days, maybe a bit too much since my wrist got a bit sore (or maybe it was the surfing I did on Sunday) and I've been wearing the brace today. The back of Gathering Intentions is finished, however. And notice I got to use the cable ends on my Options kit already.

Lauantai ja sunnuntai ja tämä päivä tuli vietettyä aika tarkkaan kotona. Joku ilkeä virus tarttui taas mukaan ja la-ilta meni aika hyvin niiskuttaessa ja aivastellessa. Neuloin kuitenkin viikonloppuna ihan kiitettävästi, ehkä hieman liikaakin kun ranne vihoittelee ja olen pitänyt tukea tänään (tai ehkä se oli se eilisen surffailu). Mutta Gathering Intetions on saanut selkäosan. Ja huomaatteko, Options-setin kaapelinpäät pääsivät käyttöön.

Ja koska saa yhden työn valmiiksi (miten niin se ei muka ole valmis??) niin voi aloittaa jotain uutta. Tässä tuokiokuvaa tarvikkeista. Tulossa huivitus ohuesta Noron Silk Garden-langasta. Pidän tuosta vinosta mallista, se korostaa mielestäni hyvin noita raitalankoja. Ohje kait tulossa Ullaan, vaikka onkin mallia sikahelppo.

And since I finished one work (what do you mean it's not finished??) I get to start something new. Here's a photo of my supplies. And upcoming is a scarfy from thin Noro Silk Garden. I like this pattern especially with these self-striping yarns. Pattern will probably appear in the upcoming Ulla though it is of the dead-easy kind.

Arvatkaa kuka unohti moisen asian lankahamstereihin ilmoittautuessaan? Ei sitten mennä lankakauppoihin, ei.

Thanks for the compassion, the wrist is much better already. I've even knitted a couple of lines of the cable cardi. Small steps etc. Now I'm off to enjoy some r&r of mind and body and go to a cruise to Stockholm. And guess who forgot about the whole thing when enrolling in the stash reduction month? No yarn stores then.

Neulojan uudet vaatteet - Knitter's new clothes

Hyvin alkanut neulontaputki katkesi yllättäen sunnuntai-iltana. Urheilu on vaarallista ja sen sain kokea omakohtaisesti matkalla spinningtunnille. Oli vähän kiire ja liukas ja olin juuri onnitellut itseäni siitä että ohitin ns. vaikeat paikat (mäet) kunnialla ja pääsin tasamaalle ja lisäsin vauhtia ja - otin kunnon etukosketuksen asfalttiin. Onneksi sain pysäytettyä vauhdin juuri kun nenä (ja silmälasit) oli tekemässä tuttavuutta luonnon kanssa. Mutta onneksi siitä selvisin kivulla, mustelmilla ja venähtäneellä ranteella. Nyt minulla on sitten tällainen. Ja miksei näitä saa mustina??

My well started knitting streak came to a halt quite suddenly on Sunday evening. Sport is dangerous as I discovered myself when on my way to spinning class. I was in a bit of a hurry and it was very slippery and I had just congratulated myself on managing to make it okay through all the difficult bits (downhill etc) and had just got to level ground - and had an almost full-body contact with the asphalt. Luckily I managed to break my fall just before my nose (and my glasses) made contact with the ground. And got away with just pain, some bruises and a sprained wrist. But now I have one of these. And why don't the make them in black??

Turinaa puikoista - Talking about Options

Neule on edennyt. Woo! Konfetteja ja torvisoittoa! Fanfaareja! Serpentiinejä ja ilmapalloja!

Ehkä jotain taustatietojakin, eli tulossa on Gathering Intentions Fiona Ellisin kirjasta Inspired Cable Knits. Kuvia voi katsella vaikka täältä ja GI on se sininen paita missä on i-cordia. Lankana minulla on oranssi Jaeger Shetland Aran ja puikkoina Knitpicksin Optionsit. Paita etenee hyvää vauhtia ja vaikka palmikkoja on, niin ne ovat max. 2x2-kääntöjä niin apupuikkoakaan ei tarvitse. Täytyy myöntää että kokeilin pari kertaa sitä "tiputetaan silmukat puikolta ja poimitaan ne"-apupuikotonta toimintaa mutta ei se minulla toiminut. Silmukoiden tiputtaminen on vaan niin - väärin. Joten teen sen omalla tavallani ja se on toiminut hyvin aiemmin ja toimii nytkin.

The knit has progressed. Woo! Confetties and hornblowing! Fanfares! Serpentines and balloons!

As for the details, this is Gathering Intentions from Fiona Ellis' book Inspired Cable Knits. You can view pictures from the book for example here. GI is the blue one with i-cords. My yarn is orange Jaeger Shetland Aran and I'm using needles from my Options set. The sweater is progressing nicely and even though there's cables they're at most 2x2 crossings so it is easy to do without a cable needle. I have to say I did try the "correct" way of doing it, you know, dropping the sitches and then picking them up but I never really got it. Dropping stitches is just so - wrong. So I'm doing it my way and it works nicely.

Ja niistä puikoista...no, nyt kun olen neulonut niillä jo melkein puolet takaosasta (todellisuus on edennyt yo. kuvasta edemmäksi) niin voisin niistä jotain mielipiteitä kertoa.

Ensinnäkin, kärjet ovat hieman terävämmät kuin Addeissa. Tästä kuvasta sitä ei kauhean hyvin näe, kyseessä on joku pieni koko (4 mm tai niillä main). Ylempi on Addi.

And about them needles. Since I've knitted almost half of a back piece with them (the knit has progressed beyond the first photo by now) I feel I have sufficient experience to tell you more about them.

First, the tips are a bit sharper than Addi's. The above photo may not show that too well since it's a small size (around 4 mm or so). The upper ones are Addis.

Ehkä tästä näkee paremmin? Neuloessa eron kyllä huomaa ja luulisin että sillä on todella paljon merkitystä pitsineuleissa.

Maybe this shows it a bit clearer? You notice the difference while knitting and I'd guess it really has an impact when knitting lace.

Kaapeli on ihan ok. Jäykähkö mutta ei kuitenkaan jää kiemuralle vaikka sitä säilyttää niin. Ei parhaiden Addien veroisia, mutta minulla on niitä parilla eri kaapelilla, jäykällä ja joustavalla ja Optionsin kaapeli on jossain siinä välillä. Liitoskohta on todella sileä ja siinä ei ole mitään ongelmia langanjuoksevuuden kannalta. Mutta kannattaa kiristää kunnolla sillä mukana tulevalla kiristysjutulla (rautalanganpätkä) tai jollakin muulla sopivalla sillä tein mallitilkkuja siten että olin kiristänyt toisen liitoksen kunnolla ja toisen vain sormilla. Sain pari kertaa tiukentaa kun puikko lähti aukeamaan.

Perussetin mukana tulee jokunen kappale puikkojen päähän ruuvattavia tappeja. Niillä puikoista saa aikaan suorat puikot - jos nyt joku pitää lörpistä puikoista - mutta myös kätevät stopparit jos päät tarvitsee irroittaa kesken työtä (kuka nyt moista tekisi...). Mutta jos aikoo säilytellä kappaleita näin niin kannattaa ostaa satsi koonmerkitsijöitä, eli muoviläpysköitä missä on merkitty puikkojen koot sekä US että mm-numeroilla. Hyödyttää myöhemmin kun tietää minkä kokoisilla puikoilla pitäisi jatkaa. Nämä eivät siis sisälly perussettiin.

The cable is quite ok. A bit stiff but does not have any coiling tendencies. Not as good as the one on the best Addis but since I have ones that aren't so good I'd say Options are somewhere in between. The join is really smooth and there's no danger of snagging stitches. But one has to tighten the join properly with the tightening thingy (or something else suitable) otherwise it may come loose. I knitted a few swatches with one join tightened with the thingy and one with fingers and I had to re-tighten a couple of times. Now I haven't had any problems (tightened properly).

With the basic set you get a couple of cable endings that can be screwed on. You can either have sort of straight needles (if you like sloppy ones) or you can use them to store the stitches on the cable in case you need to take the needles off for some reason (why, can't think of no reason for that, no, really not). But in case this happens I recommend buying a set of needle size markers. That is round plastic things with needle sizes in both US and mm on them. Otherwise it may be a bit difficult to remember which size to continue with.

I did it again

Nyt kun Ullan spesiaali on julkaistu niin voin palata taas normaaliin päiväjärjestykseen - neulomiseen.

Muistatteko värjäyskokeiluni? No, jatkoin sitä ja tadaa, tässä tulokset. Kaksi - eikun neljä marjaa. Samalla metallilieriösysteemillä, eri litkuilla (jotain punaista Kool Aidia terästettynä sinisellä ) ja kah, en minä ainakaan erota näitä toisistaan. 50 g sijasta minulla on nyt 100 g hassua kaksiväristä silkkivillaa. Näistähän saa jo vaikka mitä.

Now that Ulla's extra is out I can get back to business - knitting that is.

Do you remember my dyeing experiment? Well, I continued it and voilà, here's the result. Like two - um, four peas in a pod. With the same metal cylinder style, different liquids (some red Kool Aid spiked with blue) I managed to produce so similar yarns that I can't tell them apart. So, instead of 50 g I now have 100 g of silk-wool. That should be plenty.

Eikä se siihen jäänyt. Koska putkilanka ei imenyt väriä niin hyvin niin päätin käyttää hyväksi jäljellejääneet liemet ja kaivoin SNY:ltäni (Zeska) saamani vaaleanharmaat Sisut esiin ja pistin ne pataan. Toiseen päähän sitten sinisen loput. Harmi vaan että sinistä oli jo sen verran vähän että tulos jäi hieman hailakansiniseksi. Ihan ilman mitään suunnitelmaa, uittomenetelmällä tehdyt. Mietin vähän että värjäisinkö nämä vielä päälle sinisellä, kun sain sitä lisää. Tulisi voimakkaamman sinistä ja violettia.

And that's not all. Since the previous yarns didn't soak up much of the dye liquid I though it'd be a shame to waste it, really and dug out some light grey Sisu yarn my secret knitting friend (Zeska) gave me. In the pot they went and the other part went into the leftover blue. Though there was so little of the blue left that it came out a bit pale. But here's the result. No planning, no measuring of stripes, no nothing. I'm thinking about overdying them in the blue to get a bit more stronger result.

Stash reduction month started and so did I - a new knit that is. I also joined Project Spectrum and since the February/March colours are blue, white and grey, the colour of my new knit is...

Somehow my feelings are impure...

Minä yritin, ihan tosi - I tried, honest

Yritin ottaa kuvia puserosta päällä, joo-oh, mutta ei ole minun syyni että työnantajani haluaa minun olevan töissä silloin kun on valoisaa eikä kotona ottamassa neulekuvia. Ja meillä ei ole kunnon kattovaloja...kirottu kaamos. Mutta tässä paras kuva jonka onnistuin ottamaan (ja reilusti käsitelty). Ainakin siitä ehkä näkee että istuva se on. Jos joku vielä haluaa lisää kuvia niin pitää odottaa viikonloppuun sitten, nih. Ehkä silloin on jo jotain muutakin valmista.

I tried, I really did. Take a photo of me wearing the alpaca sweater, that is. But it is not my fault my employer wants me at work during the day and not at home taking knit-photos. And we don't have proper lights..damn winter and its short days. But this is the best photo - heavily processed. At least it shows that the thing actually fits me. If someone wants more photos then they have to wait until the weekend. Maybe by then I'll have something else finished too.

Valmista - Finished

Viimeistelypäivät alkavat tuottaa tulosta. Vuorossa taas alpakkaa, Dropsin sellaista, palmikkokauluspuseron muodossa. Ja huh, että siitä oli vaikeaa saada minkäänlaista kuvaa. Kun tuo pimeä taas pääsi yllättämään ja kuvankäsittelyohjelmalla pääsee vain johonkin asti. Ja päällä otetuista kuvista tuli ihan kauheita, joko tärähtäneitä tai lihavia (siis kyllä se kamera lihottaa, sanon minä). Enkä minä mitään naamaani halua esitellä muutenkaan kun poskessa on Siperian kokoinen finni.

Finishing days are starting to produce results. Yet again, Drops alpaca, now in a form of cable-collared sweater. And boy, it was difficult to get any kind of photos of it. The darkness caught me by surprise yet again and photoshopping will only get you so far. And the ones that were taken with me in it were horrible, either not in focus or too fat (and I say the camera makes you look fat). Not that I'd like to present my face in them now for I've got a zit the size of Siberia in my face.

Oh, and some details. The pattern is from Vogue Knitting magazine, fall 2006. The sweater is machine knitted but the collar, that is hand knit. The yarn is Drops (Garnstudio) alpaca and I spent 315 grams of it.

Odottelutöitä - Done while waiting

Ilmeisesti puikkoni herättivät kiinnostusta. Valitettavasti en voi vielä pröystäillä käyttökokemuksilla kun en ole niillä neulonut mitään. Ja eipä niillä suuremmin tulekaan mitään tehtyä ennenkuin lankahamsterikisa alkaa. Tavoitteena on tehdä parit mallitilkut ja jahka helmikuu alkaa niin Inspired Cable Knits-kirjasta lähtee Gathering Intentions (kuva esim. täällä) puikoille. Pitää vain valita sopiva lanka varastoista.

Apparently my new needles have aroused interest. I'm sorry to say I can't yet give you any comments on how they work because I haven't used them for anything. And nor will I before February (and the stash-reduction month) begins. Although I plan to knit a few swatches the main project for the new needles will be Gathering Intentions (picture for example here) from Inspired Cable Knits. I just have to pick out the suitable yarn - from my stash of course.

Tässä välissä olen sitten yrittänyt olla Hyvä ja Kunnollinen ja sen sijaan että aloittaisin jonkun uuden työn olen selvitellyt melkein valmiiden pinoa. Tällä hetkellä löytyy kolme lähes valmista vaatetta:

1. Rogue: hupun silmukointi, etureunan icord ja langanpäättely puuttuu (+vetoketju)
2. Viime kevään neulekonekurssin takki: langanpäät päätelty (oli noin viisi miljoonaa), puuttuu vetoketjun ompelu ja kauluksen toisen reunan kiinnitys
3. Vogue Knitting-lehdestä (joku suht. uusi) palmikkokauluspaita Dropsin alpakasta: palmikko kiinnitetty kaulukseen, puuttuu hihojen kiinnitys ja hieman langanpäiden ompelua
   

Siis, jos kaikki sujuu suunnitelmien mukaan niin viikonlopun jälkeen minulla voi olla kaksi uutta neuletta käyttöön. Rogueta en uskalla luvata valmiiksi kun siihen pitää hankkia vielä sopiva vetoketju ja Ullaa pitää koostaa, niin ei sitä kaikkea ehdi.

In the mean time I've tried to be Good and Virtuous and instead of starting something new I've been going through my almost finished-pile. At the moment I have three almost finished knits:

1. Rogue: hood edges, front edge i-cord and some weaving of yarn ends required (and the zipper of course)
2. Cardi from last spring's knitting machine class: weaved in all ends (about five million of them), missing a zipper and after that have to sew in the other end of the collar
3. Cable-collared sweater from a Vogue Knitting magazine (can't remember which one, one of the latest ones) from Drops Alpaca: cable collar attached, needs weaving in some ends and sleeves (done, have to be attached)

So if all goes as planned I will have two new knits to wear next week. I can't promise I'll have Rogue finished by then as it needs a bit more work and a suitable zipper and I have some Ulla-things to do so I can't promise everything.

Ameriikan tuliaisia - Presents from the States

Aikomus oli blogata lisää Kool-Aid-kokeiluista, mutta kun sain tänään tuliaisia (tai no, itse tilasin) niin eipä värjäykset oikein kiinnostaneet. Mies kävi Ameriikoissa, tilasin Knitpicksiltä lämmikettä hotelliin ja tämä on tulos. Kätevä musta kotelo.

I was going to blog more about my Kool-Aid experiments but since I got my presents (well, ordered and paid myself) they are far more interesting than some old yarn. The man went to the States and I ordered him some company from Knitpicks. Here's what I got - a nice black folder.

Inside of which are needle ends and some cables. Knitpicks Options set, that is.

Liitostekniikka on mielestäni kätevä (insinööri osaa arvostaa tällaisia asioita, jopa diplomisellainen ja ei mekaniikka). Kaapelin päässä on kierteet ja puikossa on niihin sopiva pari (en tiedä virallista nimeä kierteiden vastakappaleelle). Ja vaikka kuvasta ei sitä näy, niin tuossa kierteiden alapuolella on vielä reikä mistä voi kiristää liitoksen tiukaksi jos sitä tarvitsee. Kokeiluruuvaus tuotti kyllä aika tiukan tuloksen, mutta saa nähdä miten käy käytössä, josko löystyy.

The joint is ingenious, I think (an engineer can appreciate these things, even one with a master's degree in non-mechanical subject). The cable end holds the threads and the needle end has a matching other end (I do not know what that is called). And even though it is not visible in the photo, below the threads is a hole where you can insert a thingy to tighten the join. My test-run produced a pretty tight join without the thingy but maybe it loosens with use, we'll see.

Tuloksena on todella sileä liitos mihin on vaikea kuvitella saavansa silmukkaa tarttumaan. Lisää raportteja jahka käyttötunteja on useampi.

The end result is a nice, smooth join were it is hard to imagine snagging a stitch. More info once I've started using the set.

Ja pitihän sitä sitten lankaakin tilata - vähän. Neljä kerää allaolevaa, eli Knitpicksin Shadow-merinoa sävyssä Vineyard (kaunis viininpunainen).

And new yarn, of course. Knitpicks merino yarn Shadow, in Vineyard colourway (lovely burgundy-coloured yarn).

Eräs värjäyskokeilu - One experiment with dyes

Päivänä eräänä päätin kokeilla tehdä liukuvärjättyä lankaa. Nurkissa pyörineet kuohuviinipullon kotelot pääsivät käyttöön ja pyöritin lankaa niiden ympärille. Tässä meni aikaa, mutta mitäpä uhrauksia sitä ei tekisi tieteen eteen.

One day I decided to try to dye yarn where the colours shift gradually. Some metal sparkling wine bottle covers were taken in on the action and I spun the yarn tightly around them. It took some time but those are the sacrifices we have to make for science.

Lanka pääsi parsakattilaan lillumaan Kool Aid-väriseoksen seuraan. Tässä näkyy suunnitelman ensimmäinen heikkous: ontto metallipurkki kelluu aika mukavasti. Enkä myöskään halunnut pidellä purkkia käsin ja työnnellä sitä syvemmälle värjäyksen edistyessä, joten liukuvärjäys sai jäädä.

The yarn and some Kool Aid solution went together into the asparagus pot. And here you can see the first flaw in the otherwise great plan: the hollow tube floats quite nicely and needed something to hold it in place. Also I did not want to sit by the stove to push the tube in deeper so the gradual dyeing plan was abandoned.

Mutta ihan kivastihan siitä kaksiväristä tuli. Toinen pää saisi toista väriä sitten myöhemmin. Tai ainakin niin oli suunnitelma. Mutta kun lanka kuivui niin huomasin vielä kolmannenkin ongelman: väri tarttui vain langan pintaan ja suurin osa langasta oli yhä vaaleaa. Olisihan tämän tietysti voinut arvatakin, mutta kun en arvannut. Ajattelin että kyllä se siitä ottaisi väriä, vaan kun ei ottanut. Ilmeisesti putken olisi pitänyt olla reikäinen, mutta se ei ollut.

It got nicely two-toned. The other end would see some other colour sometime later, or so I tought. Once the yarn was dry I discovered a third problem: the dye stuck only to the surface of the yarn and the back side was still white. One should have perhaps guessed this but I didn't. I thought it'd take the dye well but that was not the case. Apparently the tube should have been filled with holes or something.

Mietin sitten aikani mitä tehdä ja päädyin siihen että värjään koko homman päälle jollakin muulla värillä niin saan ainakin kivan kirjavaa. Mutta kun rupesin vyyhteämään lankaa niin huomasin että tämähän on itseasiassa aika kivaa. Erotin kokovalkoisen osan kirjavasta myöhempää käyttöä varten ja nyt minulla on hieman yli 50g valko-punakirjavaa (Kool Aid Black Cherry) silkkivillalankaa. Mitähän kivaa tästä tekisi?

I thought about what to do for a while and I decided to dye the yarn over with something else, that way I'd get nice stripey yarn. But once I started to put the yarn to skeins from the tube I discovered that I kind of liked the way it turned out. So I separated the all-white part from the two-coloured and now I got a bit over 50g of weird two-tone (Kool Aid Black Cherry) silk-wool. What small thing should I make of these?

Tylsää työtä - Chugging along

Juu, ollaan täällä neulottu, ollaan ollaan. Rogueta eikä mitään muuta. Vähän rupeaa jo tympimään koko juttu, mutta kun olen hupussa niin pakkohan se on kestää vain loppuun asti. Tässä vaihekuva 1.

Yes, I've been knitting here. Rogue and nothing else. To be honest I'm a bit fed up with the thing but can't really quit at this point since I'm at the hood.

Hiukan vaan harmittaa että jos olisin tajunnut kääntää hupun ohjeen toisin päin niin tuon voisi kohta lopettaa kun minulla olisi kiva kaulus. Hiukan vieläkin arveluttaa tuo huppu kun en ihan huppuihmisiä ole (ja ei, en ole ihan noin keltainen, mutta jotain olisi kiva kuvasta nähdäkin).

Here's a photo of me with the thing on. It fits, though it isn't too loose - just nice and tight, the way I like it. Note the raglan mod. I'm a bit miffed though, if I had only had foresight enough I could have turned the hood chart wrong side up and I could have finished soon with a nice collar. I'm still a bit undecided about the hood since I'm not a hood person (and no, I'm not that yellow either, I just tried to get something visible in the photo).

Päivittäminen on jäänyt kun ei mitään uutta ole syntynyt. Rogueta on tullut neulottua, mutta kun mokoma on aika möntti-vaiheessa niin ei siitäkään viitsi kuvia otella. Ehkä sitten päivänvalossa (minkä päivän?). Mutta kun monessa blogissa on muisteltu vanhoja (vaikka sitä tikulla silmään jne) niin päätin minäkin, tosin meillä ei ole uutta kalenteria ja vuosihan alkaa vasta kun on uusi seinäkalenteri seinällä...

I've been lazy on the updating because I have not managed to produce anything new. Rogue has progressed but since it's in that unattractive lump-stage I haven't taken any pictures - maybe when it's daylight (what light?). But since there has been entries in many blogs about last year's knits I thought I should do one too. Though I'm still not conviced the year has changed at all since we don't have a new wall calendar and the year starts when one hangs up the new calendar so...

But, what did I do last year?

Well:

1 felted vest (knitted too big, saved the day by felting)
1 pair of mittens (for the mitten exchange)
1 crocheted kitten (passed on)
1 scarf for the Nordic Secret Friend exhange
1 scarf, silk yarn (lovely and worn)

1 pair of silkwool socks (for my uncle's birthday)
1 pair of cashmir gloves (my very first gloves)
1 Jaywalker sock (the other one will come sometime later)

1 pair of pulse warmers (for my Secret Knitting Friend)
1 ruffle scarf

and then I've done the finishing touches on my machine knitted cardi, done almost another by machine and hand and machine knitted a fair-isle cardi back+sleeves and knitted on Rogue. Not bad, I'd say.

Tässä vielä huivi kaulassa ja päässä ihan vain siksi että saisitte jonkun käsityksen pituudesta. Riittävästi hörhelöitä, sanon minä. Ja eipä tuon langan neulominen nyt niin helppoa ollut, vaikka niin väitetäänkin.

Here's the scarf around my neck and head just to give you some idea of the length. Quite sufficient amount of ruffles, I'd say. And knitting that yarn wasn't so easy as they say, in my experience.

Nysväämistä - Tinkering

Minäkin sitten siirryin betan käyttäjäksi ja pitihän se templaatti tietysti heti päivittää. Päätin pitää saman ulkoasun, kun olen siihen tottunut, mutta tietysti kaikki blogirinkikoodit hävisivät pois. Eli vielä pitää säätää - ja kehyksetkin haluan kuviini. Eli jos tulee haamupäivityksiä seuraavina päivinä, niin ne johtuvat sitten siitä.

I switched over to beta also and of course I had to upgrade the template. I decided to keep the outlook the same since I've gotten used to it and it is quite ok but of course I lost all my blog ring codes. Need to figure out how to put the frames back to my photos too. So some more tinkering is needed and it will probably cause some phantom updates, just so you know.

Eilen tuli sitten otettua kerrankin kuvia päivänvalossa. Kirjoneulepuserosta lisää, näyttää että kuvion kohdistaminen onnistui aika nappiin, se taitaa jatkua samalla korkeudella hihoissa. Hyvä minä!

Yesterday I managed to take some photos while there was still some light outside. So, more of the fair-isle cardi. It looks like the pattern calculations were spot on, it seems to be at the correct height on both the body and sleeve pieces. Right on!

Roguepalmikkoa, se kainalon alle tuleva. Mokoma on taas jäähyllä, kun lievä lämpö on pehmentänyt aivot ja onnistuin lukemaan yhden "at the same time"-kohdan ohi ja nyt pitäisi ehkä purkaa jokunen rivi tai tehdä kikka kolmonen. Ei jaksa...ja kurkkukin on kipeä (valivali).

Rogue cables, this time the one under the sleeves. The darn thing is on hold again since the slight temperature I have managed me to miss one "at the same time"-line and now I should rip three-four rows or think of something else. Too strenuous what with having a sore throat and all (whine).

Mutta lo, uutta lankaa on silti tullut tähänkin taloon. Hotpinkkiä hapsulankaa myöhempää käyttöä varten, lisää Schoppel-Wollen Samosta jotta voin jatkaa huivitusta ja neljä kerää OnLinen Solo-lankaa. Tämä pääsi nyt puikoille ja on muotoutumassa hörhöhuiviksi. Teen kymmenellä silmukalla ja ööö...3.5mm:n puikoilla ja silti jotenkin näyttää kapealta. HHhhhmm....

But lo, there's new yarn in the house. Hot pink eyelash yarn for later designs, more Schoppel-Wolle Samos so I can lengthen the scarfy a bit and four balls of OnLine Solo. That's already on the needles and about to become a frilly scarf. I'm using ten stiches and about 3.5 mm needles and it looks a bit narrow. Hhhhmm....

Kirjoneuletta - Fair-isle

Taisin luvata yrittää ottaa kuvaa kirjoneuletakin palasista päivänvalossa. No, eihän se onnistunut. Heräsin yhdeltä - eilen oli joulujuhlat, jotka olivat kivat ja Jean S. oli hauska mutta jalat ovat muusina - ja sitten tuijotin onnessani Dickensin Kolea talo-filmatisointia. Tykkään...ja seuraava osa tulee vasta maanantaina, äh! Ja sitten kello olikin jo liian pimeä. Mutta, tässä nyt kuitenkin takakappale hieman photoshopattuna. Värit ovat aika hyvät ja kuvio erottuu kauniisti. Hihat ovat siis samalla kuviolla ja tavoitteena olisi että tuo kirjoneuleraita olisi samalla korkeudella kaikissa paloissa sitten kun hihat ovat kiinni. Mutta lopullista kuvaa pitää odottaa vielä tovi, sillä etukappaleet puuttuvat ja kurssi jatkuu vasta 18.1.

I seem to remember promising to take photos of the fair-isle pieces during daylight. Well, that didn't work. I woke up at one - we had the company christmas party yesterday which was a lot of fun and dancing and boy are my feet sore today - and after that I spent a while looking happily at Dicken's Bleak House dramatization. And then suddenly the it was too dark o'clock. But anyway, presenting the back piece nicely photoshopped. The colours seem quite ok and the pattern can be seen clearly. The sleeves are done with the same pattern in similar fashion. The idea is that when the sleeves are attached the whole pattern stripe is at the same level throughout the cardi but you'll have to wait a bit to see how it turns out for the course starts again 18th of January and I'm missing the front pieces.

Joulukortteja - Christmas cards

Tämän vuoden joulukortit on taas tehty. Tein kyllä viime vuonnakin, mutta jostain syystä niistä ei kuvat päätyneet blogiin. Mutta ihastelkaa sen sijaan vuoden 2004 kortteja. Ja tässä sitten tämän vuoden satoa. Toisista pidän kovastikin ja toiset on vähän "njaa", mutta tällä kertaa tuli vain yksi ihan epäonnistunut kortti. Edistystä.

This year's christmas cards have been finished. I did make cards last year too, but for some reason the photos didn't end up in my blog. But you can take a look at the cards from year 2004. And here's the flock for this year. Some of them I like very much while some are just "hmmh" but this time there was only one no-good card. Progress.

Pateettista - Pathetic

Joulukortti-innostus iskee aina säännöllisesti joka vuosi ja tänään kävin uudistamassa kortintekovälinevarastoani (ei sitten tarvitse pariin vuoteen ainakaan korttipohjia ostaa). Muistin siinä sitten hääriessäni että minullahan on kaksi iskemätöntä huovutusneulaa kätköissäni ja mukaan tarttui myös punaista villaa ja pari pientä piparkakkumuottia. Siis eikun kokeilemaan neulahuovutusta, sitä kun ei ole vielä tullut koetettua. Ja hyvin meni, ensimmäinen neula vääntyi ensimmäisen minuutin aikana ja sitä sitten yritin suoristaa ja kuului naps - poikkihan se meni. Toinen kesti ihan hyvin (on ehjä vieläkin) ja sain sillä sitten iskettyä verinäytteen sormestakin kolme kertaa (kaksi kertaa samasta ja sattui kyllä). Vitsit että on nyt onnistunut olo - not. Tämmöiset säälittävät tekeleet sain sitten aikaiseksi - valkoinen homeen näköinen on itseasisassa silkkiä eikä näytä läheskään noin homeiselta normaalivalossa. Yhdessä sydämessä on sitten hopealankaa ympätty mukaan. Vähänkös en innostunut neulahuovutuksesta. Nämä saavat riittää. Mutta onpa ainakin mustia korttipohjia, nih!

I get every year, regularly, the urge to make my own christmas cards. So, today I went and got more things to freshen up my existing card-making material stash (won't need any more blank cards for a few years). While I was wandering around the store I remembered that I had two unused felting needles lying about somewhere. So I got some red wool and small cookie molds and got cracking. Haven't tried needle felting previously so I thought it was about time. And boy, what a hoot that was. I managed to bend the first needle in the first minute or so and when I tried to straighten it, snap it went. The other one survived the ordeal quite nicely though I can't say the same about myself. I managed to draw blood from my fingers three times (twice from the same one, and it hurt). Boy, do I feel accomplished now - not. Ended up with these pitiful things. The white mouldy-looking substance on them is actually silk and is not nearly as moldy-looking in real life. And I got some silver thread embedded into one of the hearts. Can't say I got really into needle felting, so I won't. I think these are enough, thank you. But at least I got black blank cards, so there!

Pictures from the life of a knitter

(imagine read in the voice of David Attenborough) Ja anteeksi, en millään voi kuvitella ko. henkilön puhuvan mitään muuta kieltä kuin englantia, siksi vain sillä kielellä tällä kertaa.

The knitter is an elusive species easily disturbed by cameras and loud noises. But if we tread carefully, we can see traces of the knitter as it goes about on its daily business.

The place where the knitter can be found most often is in the corner of this sofa. If you look carefully you can see scattered amongst the cushions small, peculiar objects the knitter has left behind. The purpose for all these is not clear but apparently they are involved in the craft somehow.

The knitter consumes copious amounts of hot liquids during its crafty endeavours. It uses special receptacles for that and though it usually owns several pieces, it seems to favour some above the other. The reasons behind this behaviour could be that this particular "cup" - as they call them - seems to be larger than the others. Here you can see it in its "ready to use" -state, filled up with tea.

Here you can see some of the favourite pieces of this knitter. On the left you can see the traditional Winnie-the-Pooh -style cup and on the right is a hand side is a hand-painted one with cat decorations.

This individual, like the magpie, is also overly fond of shiny objects which it uses to adorn itself. The favourite trinket changes from time to time but lately it has been seen wearing this silver piece bought from a Tibet exhibition in San Francisco summer 2005.

The views at this time of the year are never pretty in Finland and this knitter seems to have difficulty pointing out the favourite view around its surroundings (if one excludes yarn) so instead you can see the one view this individual sees the most, perhaps. It is the view from the spare bedroom where the books and computer are located. The blue thing you can see vaguely in the picture is a structure called a "Moomin House".

The knitter is a timid creature that likes to stay close to its nest but wanders outside occasionally when the need arises. It is very fond of footwear, like many of its fellow creatures. This one seems to prefer black footwear and has already switched to deeper winter plumage, so the colour and styles appear more sombre than in the more sunnier seasons. However, this one seems to prefer these black, almost military style boots.

But during the summer season the knitter has been seen wearing more colours and perhaps the strangest pair of footwear this knitter owns is this pair obtained from the region of Brussels sometime last summer.

The knitter usually possesses a thing called a "stash" where it keeps its hoard of yarn. Usually there is a favourite amongst the multitude but unfortunately this particular specimen could not point out its favourite.

This is all there is to show at this point, I hope you enjoyed this peek into the life of a knitter.

Huivitus - Scarfy

Sainpa viimeinkin pääteltyä langanpätkät tästä huivituksesta. Sitä ei oikein ihan täysikasvuiseksi huiviksi voi kutsua, koska siitä tuli aika lyhyt. Mutta se ei oikeastaan haittaa, koska tungen yleensä huivit takin alle, niin pitkät päät olisivat vain haitaksi. Siitä tuli siis täydellinen takkihuivitus, vaikka lyhyys johtuukin vain siitä että lanka loppui eikä suunnitelmallisuudesta. Nätti siitä kuitenkin tuli, vai mitä?

I finally managed to weave in the ends of this scarfy. It's not really a proper scarf since it turned out quite short. But it doesn't really matter since I prefer to wear my scarves tucked into my jacket anyway and long ends would just be in the way. It turned out a perfect jacket scarfy then, though the reason it turned out this way is because I didn't have any more yarn not because I planned it this way. But it's pretty nonetheless, no?
