Terveisiä Roomasta - When in Rome

Suomessa taas! Roomassa oli lämmintä, kosteaa ja aurinkoista. Lämpötila oli luokkaa 27 astetta ja kosteusprosenttia en edes uskalla ruveta arvailemaan. Kosteaa oli kuitenkin. Hiukan liiankin lämmintä koleisiin kesäsäihin tottuneelle neulojalle, mutta en antanut sen häiritä itseäni liikaa. Noniin, tarpeeksi säästä. Entäs Rooma sitten? Jotenkin pikkukaupunkimaisen oloinen, vaikka siellä asuukin lähemmäs kolme miljoonaa ihmistä. Talot ovat matalia ja vanhoja (tietenkin), kadut aika kapeita (paitsi ihan keskustassa) ja pieniä aukioita, piazzoja, on joka kulman takana. Niissä onkin mukava istuskella ja nautiskella esimerkiksi lasillinen viiniä. Oli siellä myöskin virallisempia aukoita, joilla oli kielletty mm. bailaus. Onneksi jätin tanssikengät kotiin!

Back in Finland again! Rome was warm, humid and sunny. The temperature was around 27 degrees Centigrade and I won't even begin to guess what the relative humidity was. It was high anyway. A bit too warm for a knitter who has gotten used to the cold summer weather we've had this year. But I didn't let it bother me too much. Well, enough about weather. What about Rome? To me it had a sort of small town feel to it even though it is a home to closer to three million people. The houses are quite small and old (obviously), the streets are narrow when you step a bit away from the main streets and small squares, piazzas, are around every corner. They are nice places to sit down, relax, and maybe enjoy a glass of Italian wine. There were also more official squares where it wasn't allowed to for example party. It's a good thing I left my party shoes at home!

Kaiken nähtävyyksien katselun, yleisen kaupungilla hortoilun, luennoilla istumisen (ei, se ei ollut pelkkä huvimatka) ehdin myös shoppailla. Tein heräteostoksen ja ostin aivan ihanan mustan nahkatakin. Ihmettelin itsekin miten löysin jotain sopivaa tuolta pienien ihmisten luvatusta maasta (tunsin itseni ajoittain epänormaalin pitkäksi) mutta takki sopii kuin valettu! Tosi pehmeää nahkaa...juuri moista olen kaipaillutkin. Ja säätkin alkavat suosimaan nahkatakkia.

After all the sight-seeing, general walking around and sitting at lectures (no, it wasn't just a holiday) I did find time to shop also. I ran into the most gorgeous black leather jacket. I was surprised to find something that fit me from that land of small people (yes, I felt freakishly tall there sometimes even though I'm not) but anyway the jacket fits me like a dream. It's really soft leather...just what I've been looking for. And even the weather starts to favour leather jackets.

Nyt kuulen pienten äänten vaativan: " entäs lanka? Löytyikö sieltä lankaa?". Ja vastaus on: kyllä. Katsokaa allaolevaa kuvaa.

Now I can hear all the small voices demanding: "what about yarn! Did you buy any yarn?" And the answer is: yes, I did. Take a look at this:

Siinä komeilee lankasaaliini hotellin sängyllä. Konferenssipaikan vieressä oli lankakauppa nimeltä Canetta. Kauppa oli viehettävä, myi lankaa, lastenvaatteita ja kirjontatarvikkeita. Lanka oli siististi tiskin takana ja kansiosta sai tiirailla haluamiansa lankoja joita sitten kiikutettiin hiplattavaksi. Ylellistä! Täältä ostin kahta lankaa: Merinos Otto-lankaa (100% merinovillaa, ah, niin pehmeää!) ja Fiordo-merkkistä "möykkylankaa". Möykkylangasta tulee huivi ja Otto haluaa neuletakiksi. Ajattelin tätä. Kunhan saan tiheysongelmani ratkaistua.

There is a picture of my stash-enhancement. Next to the conference venue was a yarn store called Canetta. It was a charming store. They sold yarn, baby clothes and embroidery stuff. The yarn was neatly tucked behind a counter and you could look at a folder that contained the yarn samples and pick the ones you liked and they gave them to you for closer examination (they understood the need to stroke yarn). I brought two different yarns: Merinos Otto (100% merino wool and ah, so soft!) and Fiordo yarn that is a bit lumpy. Fiordo is destined to become a scarf of some sort and Otto wants to become this. Once I solve my gauge problems.

Surffaillessani webissä ennen matkaani törmäsin erinäisissä blogeissa kommentteihin siitä, ettei Roomasta löydy kivoja lankakauppoja. Noh, minä löysin kolme ja niistä yhden vieläpä sattumalta. Käytin hieman aikaa tutkimalla keltaisia sivuja webistä. Rooman keltaiset sivut löytyvät täältä. Suosittelen etsimistä italiaksi, koska tuloksia tuli sillä kielellä huomattavasti enemmän. Lanka on filati ja sitten vaan paikka mistä halutaan lankaa löytää. Systeemi näyttää näppärästi kaupan paikan myös kartalla. Helpottaa mahdollisten kohteiden valitsemista huomattavasti.

As I was surfing the web before my journey I ran into some blogs commenting that there's no nice yarn stores in Rome. Well, I found three and one of them I even found by accident. I used a bit time before hand searching the yellow pages, that can be found here. I recommend searching in Italian since it gave me much more hits than English. Just type in "filati" for yarn and then the place you want to look in. The system gives you the locations on a map too. It makes picking the possible targets easier.

• Filati Defil Srl, Via Principe Amadeo, 87/A (vaikuttaa myyvän lankaa pääasiassa kutomoita varten, mutta myös joitain lankoja käsinneulojia varten. Ei kannata vartavasten käydä, mutta jos on lähettyvillä poikkeamisen arvoinen)
• Lana Gatto, Piazza di S. Lorenzo in Lucina (piazza Via D. Corson varrella, paljon lankoja, vaikuttaa vähän hienostelevalta)

Now, as for the shops I visited:

• Canetta: Via IV Novembre, 157 B (don't let the strange way of numbering houses confuse you, it's there)
• Filati Defil Srl, Via Principe Amadeo, 87/A (seems to be mostly for knitting factories and such, does sell some yarn for handknitters too. Not worth a visit by itself but if you're in a neighbourhood you could pop in)
• Lana Gatto, Piazza di S. Lorenzo in Lucina (a piazza along Via D. Corso, lots of yarn, a bit on the fancy side)

Onnistuin tuomaan tuliaisiksi muutakin kuin lankaa ja nahkaa. Tämä päivä on kulunut nukkuessa kotona lievän kuumeen kourissa. Heräämisen jälkeen on tullut latkittua runsaasti lämpimiä nesteitä. Toivottavasti se menee ohitse nopeasti. Noh, taidankin mennä katsomaan jotain elokuvaa, rapsuttamaan kissaa ja neulomaan.

I managed to bring home more than just yarn and a leather jacket. This day I have spent at home sleeping away a mild fever. After waking up (around two in the afternoon) I've been drinking lots of warm liquids. I hope it'll pass quickly. Well, that's it for today. I think I'll go watch a movie, scratch the cat and knit some.
