Terveisiä Kotkasta - Greetings from Kotka

Tulinpa vähän aikaa sitten kotiin vietettyäni viikonloppua Kotkassa. Lankakauppoihin en ehtinyt, koska lähdimme sinne vasta lauantaina ja kaupat olivat jo kiinni saapuessamme perille. Kävin kuitenkin tutustumassa pikaisesti paikallisen Robin Hood-kaupan valikoimat.

Came back from Kotka a short while ago after spending a weekend there. I didn't have time to visit local yarn stores since we got there Saturday afternoon after all the small shops had closed. But I managed to briefly check out the loca Robin Hood-store (to you foreigners, it's one of those stores that sell everyhting from underwear to garden supplies...some of it is good and some of it is pure rubbish but sometimes you can make good deals there). It only sells Novita-brand yarns but amongst all the current yarns like Nalle etc. I found a yarn called Linnea (50% linen, 50% cotton). I haven't come across it before but then again I have gaps in my Novita yarn knowledge. Needless to say it was an older yarn. I thought about buying it in black but they only had 500g of it and according to the belt you needed 750g for long-sleeved sweater in size M. They did have it in another colour but since it was an amazingly unpleasant shade of brownish green I left all of it in the store.

However, we bought a wowen basket for our cat there...which she was afraid of when she saw it. But after a couple of hours she was brave enough to venture inside it so there's still hope.

Jei!

I do have something to show you! Above is the finished party thing modelled by the recipient (ie. my mother).

I doubt that I'll publish the pattern anywhere, since it wasn't quite 100% successful. I had to crochet a couple of rounds around the neck since I was told it was too wide. But it was the first sweater I have designed from scratch. So an accomplishment in itself. Yay me!

And here's another thing I'd like to show you. I brought back some flower bulbs from Madeira to my mother and amongs them was this orchid bulb (my mother has a thing for orchids). Now it has started to grow (a small stub in the lower left) and hopefully some day it will flower too. I'm looking forward to it since from the size of the bulb it will be a really bad-ass orchid. It's about the size of an egg that has been stretched to 1.5 times its length. And we deduced it to be a cymbid.
