Then you put it into a washing machine (or you can felt by hand also, but it takes lot more work) and lo, out comes a felted thing. It shrinks somewhat, depending on the yarn used, usually 30-40%, the surface looks uniform, you can't really see the individual stitches anymore and it feels more dense.
